Additionally, it offers NIO Certified, a used vehicle inspection, evaluation, acquisition, and sales service. The company was formerly known as NextEV Inc. and changed its name to NIO Inc. in July 2017. NIO Inc. was incorporated in 2014 and is headquartered in Shanghai, China.

The company said the partnership will support NIO's transition from 400V to 900V architectures using onsemi's EliteSiC enhanced M3e technology.
The company said that this integration is expected to accelerate the development of high-voltage electric vehicle systems.
The company also added that the technology is expected to improve energy efficiency, thermal performance, and overall drivetrain output, enabling longer driving range, faster charging times, and enhanced vehicle performance.
The expanded collaboration builds on a longstanding partnership.
The company's EliteSiC technology previously supported NIO's 400V platforms.
The technology now underpins NIO's 900V architectures, including flagship models and vehicles debuting at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show.
The company said the collaboration reflects a broader industry shift.
The shift is toward closer integration between automakers and semiconductor firms.
In the pre-market trading, onsemi is 0.51% higher at $98.90 on the Nasdaq.

Japan Auto Sales to Remain Steady: Japan’s new vehicle market contracted by 3.5% to 394,965 units in February 2026, down from a robust 409,348 units in the same month a year earlier, per registration data from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. However, in Japan, the automotive market is expected to remain stable. Per S&P Global Mobility forecast, light-vehicle sales are expected to be around 4.55 million units in 2026 compared with 4.56 million in 2025. The projected growth of 0.8% in the Japanese economy in 2026 is expected to help sustain vehicle sales.
Europe Auto Market Signals Weakness: Europe faces an uncertain outlook. New vehicle registrations declined 1.2% year to date through February 2026 compared with the same period last year, per the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Although February alone saw a modest 1.4% increase, the earlier 3.9% drop in January and the overall year-to-date decline suggest a challenging road ahead for the region’s auto market.

Over the past five years, the industry has traded as high as 12.48X, as low as 6.97X and at a median of 9.26X.
3 Stocks to Watch
Nissan: It designs, manufactures, markets and repairs vehicles. It primarily offers passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, electric vehicles, sports vehicles and power train components. It recently announced its long-term plan called “Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life,” outlining how it will shape its future vehicles and technologies.
The company is focusing on cars powered by artificial intelligence while also making its global lineup smaller and more streamlined. As part of this effort, Nissan plans to reduce its models from 56 to 45 by removing weaker products and improving overall efficiency. The company is focusing on three main markets, Japan, the United States, and China, as part of its global strategy.
It has set sales targets of 550,000 units in Japan and one million units each in the United States and China by fiscal 2030. China will also serve as an export base, with models such as the N7 and Frontier Pro planned for regions, including Latin America, ASEAN and the Middle East.

NIO's strong vehicle lineup, including ES6, ET5T, ES8, EC6, ES7, ET5, ET7, EP9, EVE, ET9 and EC7 models, is aiding the company’s deliveries growth. Its efforts to expand beyond its luxury lineup with the launch of a more affordable ONVO brand and a high-end and small car brand, Firefly, bode well.
Due to volume ramp-up, new launches, and component and supply chain cost optimization, NIO’s vehicle margins are improving. Vehicle gross margin in the first quarter of 2026 will be maintained at a level similar to that of the fourth quarter of 2025. The company plans to launch three new large SUV models in 2026, all positioned at the high end of their segments. NIO expects these models to deliver strong margin contributions.

Toyota: It is one of the leading automakers in the world in terms of sales and production. The surge in hybrid adoption is boosting Toyota’s sales. Toyota plans to significantly expand hybrid and plug-in hybrid production to about 6.7 million vehicles by 2028, a 30% increase over its 2026 goal.
The company expects to sell 9.75 million units in fiscal 2026, up from 9.36 million sold in fiscal 2025. Toyota and Lexus vehicle sales are estimated to reach 10.5 million units, up 2.2% from fiscal 2025, on the back of strong demand in North America, Europe and Japan. Electrified vehicle sales are expected to reach 5.06 million units, up from 4.75 million units in fiscal 2025. Higher expected year-over-year sales are likely to boost the company’s top-line growth in fiscal 2026.

One day that's likely to change, but for now, the industry is watching a battle rage in Europe, where the Chinese are gaining ground.
Nio (NYSE: NIO), despite its record battery-swap numbers and high sales volume in China, has initially failed in Europe. The good news is that it already has its solution, and the timing could give investors an opportunity.

How Nio failed
Non-Chinese automakers in Europe have reason for concern. Chinese automakers are gaining ground, improving quality, and boasting more affordable pricing. It's already working in China's home market, where sales of the top three Chinese premium brands surged 73% to 1.29 million vehicles in 2025. On the flip side, the top three foreign premium brands in China combined for an 11% decline to 1.82 million.
That combination of factors will enable premium Chinese brands such as Nio to rival Cadillac, Lexus, BMW, and Tesla in the future. Currently, however, Nio is struggling significantly in Europe with a sharp sales slump, declining registrations, and a shifting strategy.
There are numerous driving forces behind Nio's initial failure, including its direct-to-consumer sales model featuring "Nio Houses." Many of Nio's vehicles are also considered too large for European urban areas. But a primary reason behind Nio's failure is that the same strategy that got Chinese automakers in the door to the markets won't work in premium segments. More specifically, Chinese brands surged in Europe, capturing 8% of the overall market over the first two months of 2026 through acceptable quality at an incredibly competitive price.
Nio's solution
For Nio's premium and namesake brand, its solution is a combination of time, brand building, and marketing spending. For Nio's broader European success, the company's solution is the Firefly. Think of the Firefly high-end compact electric vehicle (EV) as a smaller, intelligent EV, tailored for urban and European consumers.
After Nio launched the Firefly in Norway and the Netherlands, it introduced the brand to Austria and Hungary last year and will expand into Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, and the Czech Republic this year. It's one of the company's biggest pushes into Europe yet in hopes of expanding its lineup, growing its presence and branding in Europe, and perhaps helping build a bloodline of consumers for its premium namesake brand.
Although Nio may already have its solution for Europe, savvy investors would be wise to watch this speculative stock from a distance while other headwinds remain. If the brutal price war in China cools, looser tariffs enable a legitimate plan and timeline to enter the U.S. market, it grows its premium brand in Europe, and its battery-swap infrastructure and strategy gain traction, it could very well be time to start a position.

Nio Already Has a European Solution: Finally Time to Buy the Stock?

AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ: ASTS), a developer of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites for cellular connections, went public through a merger with a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC) just over five years ago. Its stock closed at $11.81 per share on its first day, but sank to a record low of $2.01 on April 2, 2024. It lost its luster as it repeatedly delayed the long-awaited launch of its first BlueBird Block 1 (BB1) commercial satellites, racked up steep losses, and faced stiff competition from SpaceX's Starlink. But today, its stock trades at about $85.
That comeback was driven by its deals with telecom giants like AT&T and Verizon, the launch of its first five BB1 satellites in September 2024, and the launch of its first BlueBird Block 2 (BB2) satellite -- which can process ten times more data than its predecessor -- last December. It also impressed the bulls with its goal of reaching 60 satellites in orbit by the end of this year, as well as its long-term aim of launching over 240 satellites.

AST's comeback stunned many investors who ignored its near-term catalysts, and analysts expect its revenue to surge from $71 million in 2025 to $1.92 billion in 2028 as it strikes new deals and expands its constellation with even more powerful satellites. But with a market cap of $26 billion, much of that growth is already priced into its stock at 14 times 2028 sales.
While AST still has room to grow, investors might want to focus on two other underappreciated stocks -- Nio (NYSE: NIO) and Joby (NYSE: JOBY) -- and see why a few near-term catalysts could also drive their shares higher over the next few years.
Why are Nio and Joby underappreciated?
Nio, a Chinese electric vehicle maker, sells a wide range of sedans and SUVs. It differentiates itself from competitors with swappable batteries, which can be quickly replaced at its battery-swapping stations as a faster alternative to conventional charging.
From 2020 to 2025, Nio's annual vehicle deliveries surged from 43,728 to 326,028 units, and its revenue grew at a 40% CAGR. From 2025 to 2028, analysts expect its revenue to grow at a 24% CAGR as it sells more premium vehicles, expands its Onvo and Firefly sub-brands, monetizes its battery swapping stations more effectively, and sells more vehicles in Europe.
Yet Nio's stock still trades at less than one times this year's sales. It remains under pressure because it's highly leveraged and still deeply unprofitable. The trade war, tariffs, and other geopolitical issues are also broadly driving investors away from Chinese stocks.
Joby is an early mover in the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) market. Its first eVTOL, the S4, can carry a single pilot and four passengers, travel up to 150 miles on a single charge, and achieve a maximum speed of 200 miles per hour. Its top investors and customers already include Toyota, Delta Air Lines, and Uber. It's also developing eVTOLs for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).
Joby planned to launch its first commercial flights in Dubai this year, but those plans will likely remain on hold until the Middle East conflict ends. In the U.S., it's still waiting for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to approve its first commercial flights. Until those catalysts kick in, it will still generate most of its revenue from its DoD contracts for the U.S. Air Force.
But assuming its first flights are approved, analysts expect Joby's revenue to surge from $53 million in 2025 to $459 million in 2028. It might not seem cheap at 19 times its 2028 sales, but that higher valuation could be justified if the eVTOL market explodes over the next decade.
Why could a few catalysts drive Nio and Joby higher?
Nio's vehicle margins are steadily improving as it sells more higher-margin vehicles, and it actually reported its first profit in the fourth quarter of 2025. If it narrows its losses, reduces its debt, and proves its business is sustainable, then it could be revalued as a growth stock again.
As for Joby, its stock could blast off once its first commercial flights are cleared in Dubai and the United States. If it maintains its early mover advantage in the eVTOL market, it could deliver multibagger gains as those drone-like aircraft replace conventional helicopters.

BYD (OTC: BYDDY), China's largest automaker, has grown like a weed over the past five years. From 2020 to 2025, its annual vehicle sales surged from 427,302 units to 4.6 million units, its revenue jumped from 157 billion yuan to 804 billion yuan ($118 billion), and its net income soared from 4 billion yuan to 33 billion yuan ($5 billion). Most of that growth spurt occurred after it stopped producing gas-powered cars in 2022 and sold more hybrid and electric vehicles. It even surpassed Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) as the world's largest EV maker in 2024.

How fast is BYD growing?
BYD, which was originally a battery maker before evolving into a diversified automaker, differentiates itself from other EV makers with its own lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are safer, cheaper, and more power-efficient than conventional lithium-ion batteries. It further expanded its first-party supply chain by manufacturing motors, chips, and power electronics, and unified its production lines with its e-Platform 3.0 architecture for multiple vehicles. That vertical integration reduced its expenses as it ramped up its production.
From 2025 to 2028, analysts expect BYD's revenue and net income to grow at 13% and 24% CAGRs, respectively. That growth will be driven by rising overseas shipments in Southeast Asia, Europe, and Latin America; the expansion of its fast-charging network in China, the rollout of new AI features in its mid-range vehicles, and increased production capacity.
To grow its profits, BYD will prioritize its higher-margin premium EVs and plug-in hybrid EVs, produce more cost-efficient first-party components, and leverage its scale to reduce costs. Those stable profits could make it a better investment than smaller Chinese EV makers like Nio, which are still years away from generating stable annual profits.

The trade war, tariffs, geopolitical conflicts, and the cooling EV market are all squeezing BYD's valuations. But if those headwinds dissipate, it could be revalued as a growth stock again.
If BYD matches analysts' estimates, grows its revenue at a 10% CAGR from 2028 to 2036, and trades at a more generous ten times sales by the final year, its stock could rise nearly 28 times over the next decade. Therefore, it could certainly be a life-changing investment -- but investors should brace for significant near-term volatility in this choppy market.

China’s auto market has entered 2026 on a softer footing after a strong run in the previous year. After vehicle sales and production in China hit record highs in 2025, with both metrics exceeding 30 million units for the third straight year, first-quarter 2026 vehicle sales in the country witnessed double-digit declines. Demand lost momentum across both electric and traditional vehicle segments. Seasonal disruptions and policy adjustments weighed on buying activity, while broader cost pressures added to the cautious sentiment.
Q1 and March Sales Decline Sharply
China’s retail passenger vehicle sales declined more than 17% year over year, with total vehicle sales falling to about 4.23 million units in the first quarter of 2026, per CPCA, as cited in Yicai Global. The weakness was even more pronounced in the NEV segment. NEV sales dropped 21% year over year to roughly 1.91 million units in the quarter, reflecting the impact of reduced policy support. March data showed a similar trend. Retail car sales fell around 15% year over year to nearly 1.65 million units. NEV sales declined more than 14% to approximately 848,000 units during the month.
What Led to the Slowdown?
One key factor was a shift in the Chinese New Year holiday. The holiday fell in late February, which pushed the typical post-holiday demand recovery into March. As a result, both February and early March saw weaker-than-usual sales activity, distorting year-over-year comparisons.
Policy changes also played a major role. The government scaled back incentives for NEVs, removing the full purchase tax exemption from this year onward. This led to a drop in demand as consumers adjusted to higher upfront costs, particularly affecting EV sales momentum.
At the same time, automakers are dealing with rising input costs. Prices for semiconductors, memory chips and non-ferrous metals have surged, partly driven by global demand linked to the artificial intelligence boom. In addition, higher international oil prices amid geopolitical tensions have increased both production and ownership costs.
These pressures have hit the internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle segment particularly hard, as higher fuel costs and weaker consumer sentiment further dampened demand.
Exports Emerge as a Bright Spot
While domestic demand remained weak, exports offered a strong offset, led by continued momentum in NEVs.
Passenger car exports jumped 74% year over year in March to about 695,000 units. NEV exports surged 140% to roughly 349,000 units, making up more than half of total shipments, up from 36% a year ago. The strength extended to the first quarter, with NEV exports rising 123.7% to around 908,000 units, reflecting solid overseas demand for Chinese EVs.
BYD Co Ltd BYDDY led the push, exporting 116,882 NEVs in March and recently raising its 2026 export target to 1.5 million vehicles.
Q1 Delivery Snapshot: Mixed Trends Across Key EV Players
China’s leading EV makers reported a mixed set of delivery numbers for the first quarter.
BYD remained the volume leader, selling 695,772 new energy passenger vehicles globally in the quarter. However, this marked a 30% decline year over year, with pure EV sales also falling 25% to 310,389 units.
In contrast, NIO Inc. NIO stood out with strong growth. The company delivered 83,465 vehicles in Q1, up 98.3% from a year earlier, exceeding its guidance range of 80,000-83,000 units. The performance of NIO’s close peers was more subdued. XPeng Inc. XPEV reported deliveries of 62,682 units, down from 94,008 vehicles in the year-ago period. Meanwhile, Li Auto Inc. LI posted 95,142 deliveries, reflecting only a modest increase from 92,864 units last year.

Overall, China’s auto market is facing a near-term reset, with demand likely to stabilize only after seasonal effects fade and consumers adjust to the new policy and cost environment. CPCA expects a gradual pickup from this month as post-holiday activity normalizes. While the second quarter may still remain soft, the market is expected to find its footing thereafter and return to growth in the second half of the year.
