Further, the company involved in the provision of energy and service packages to its users; design and technology development activities; manufacture of e-powertrains, battery packs, and components; and sales and after sales management activities. Additionally, it offers NIO Certified, a used vehicle inspection, evaluation, acquisition, and sales service. NIO: The companyappears to be entering a more promising phase of its growth story, supported by accelerating vehicle deliveries, a broader product portfolio and improving operational discipline. The Chinese EV maker has regained momentum in recent quarters as demand for its vehicles strengthens and newer models gain traction in the market.
A key driver of this growth is NIO's expanding lineup. At the premium end, the recently launched ES9 is expected to further strengthen NIO's position. The model builds on the success of ES8, which has consistently been one of the best-selling vehicles in China's high-end automotive segment. The company’s sub-brands, Onvo and Firefly, are helping it target different customer segments and price points, broadening its addressable market.
Beyond top-line growth, NIO is becoming a more efficient business. Management has been implementing a more decentralized operating structure aimed at improving cost controls and capital allocation. These efforts are already showing up in improving vehicle margins. Lithium Americas: The company offers investors a way to gain exposure to one of the most important materials underpinning the future of EVs. As EV adoption continues to grow, demand for lithium—which is a key component of batteries— is expected to rise steadily over the coming years.
At the center of Lithium Americas' growth story is the Thacker Pass project in Nevada, which hosts the largest known lithium resource in the United States. The project is strategically important because it can help reduce the country's reliance on imported lithium while supporting the expansion of domestic battery manufacturing. Once fully operational, Thacker Pass is expected to produce up to 40,000 tons of lithium carbonate annually, enough to supply batteries for roughly 800,000 electric vehicles.
The project is advancing steadily toward production. Phase 1 remains on track, with mechanical completion of the processing plant expected by late 2027 and commercial ramp-up planned through 2028. Importantly, the project has secured substantial financial and strategic support. A $2.23 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy provides funding visibility. The scale of Thacker Pass is particularly noteworthy. Phase 1 alone is expected to expand current U.S. lithium production capacity by roughly seven times, highlighting the project's potential impact on the domestic supply chain. Lithium Americas’ large-scale resource base, government backing and clear production roadmap position the company to benefit from rising demand for battery materials in the years ahead. ChargePoint: While much of the attention in the EV industry is focused on vehicle manufacturers, ChargePoint is building the infrastructure that makes widespread EV adoption possible. The company has built one of the largest EV charging ecosystems in the world, connecting drivers to more than 1.4 million public and private charging ports globally. Its managed network includes roughly 400,000 charging ports, including more than 41,000 DC fast chargers, with a growing presence across Europe.
ChargePoint continues to strengthen its competitive position through innovation and strategic partnerships. Nio (NYSE: NIO) electric vehicle (EV) sales are booming, margins are improving, and consumers are queueing up for its newly launched mass-market EV brand, Onvo. By all logical metrics, the Chinese EV maker is executing well and bucking the slowdown in China's overall automotive industry. Yet, the stock fell 12.4% in May, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Nio's numbers reveal solid growth
Nio released its first-quarter numbers last month. Q1 deliveries jumped 98% year over year to 83,465 units. Vehicle sales more than doubled to $3.3 billion, while gross margin improved from 7.6% to 19%, driven mainly by higher average selling prices. Nio reported a net loss of only $0.03 per share, crushing analysts' estimates.
It was also an aggressive launch period for the company, with Nio launching Onvo L80 SUV in mid-May and the Nio ES9 SUV later in the month. Importantly, it began deliveries immediately, providing an instant volume boost.
Additionally, Nio's ultra-premium ES8 continued to dominate, holding the number one sales spot in China for all vehicles priced above RMB 400,000 for five consecutive months.
With everything seemingly working in Nio's favor, why did the stock still fall in May?
The biggest cloud hanging over EV stocks was a slowdown in China's auto market, with car sales falling for the eighth straight month in May. Nio's CEO William Li even said that China's automotive market has likely moved past its "golden era." EVs and plug-in hybrids made up 62% of total car sales in May, but their sales were also down for the fifth straight month.
In what may have also come as a surprise to Nio investors, the company is pulling back on its international growth plans. Nio is not exiting any market, but is planning to adopt partnership models instead of direct sales to cut costs, according to CnEvPost. This is in sharp contrast to rival Xpeng's business strategy. Xpeng plans to double overseas sales in 2026. It already operates in 60 countries and regions and is targeting the Latin American market next.
Should you buy Nio stock now, or avoid it?
Nio is flush with cash and has the capital runway to keep expanding its massive battery-swapping infrastructure, also one of its biggest competitive advantages. It projects Q2 deliveries of 110,000 to 115,000 vehicles, representing nearly 53% to 60% growth year over year. Nio's shift toward an asset-light business model overseas is also a smart move.
However, the Chinese EV market is becoming a battleground. Nio faces intense, escalating domestic competition from not just the EV makers but also tech giants like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Alibaba, all of whom are now making EVs.
Nio still has the financial clout and infrastructure to grow in the domestic market, but there are other risks with owning Chinese stocks that investors should be aware of. The latest example is the U.S. Department of Defense officially adding Nio to its Section 1260H "Chinese Military Companies" list, along with other big players like Alibaba.
To be sure, this designation does not restrict U.S. investors from trading the stock, and Nio also plans to contest the inclusion and take legal action if necessary. The label, however, can create barriers to growth. Large institutional investors operate under strict compliance mandates that prohibit investing in stocks classified as a foreign military entity. That could mean institutional selling in Nio stock, effectively capping the upside.

Why Nio Stock Skid 12% in May Despite 129% Growth in EV Sales

China, the world's largest automotive market, hasn't been as enjoyable for automakers foreign or domestic in recent times. A brutal electric vehicle (EV) price war driven by a long list of subsidized competitors created a race to the bottom of pricing. That scenario has eroded margins across the industry and forced many domestic automakers to ramp up their exports to Europe and other countries to support growth. Nio (NYSE: NIO), strangely enough, has been thriving while doing the opposite: still focusing on China.
Goodbye golden era
According to Nio CEO, William Li, China's automotive market has moved past its "golden era," with China's domestic car sales falling for the seventh consecutive month in April. With China's domestic auto sales spiraling lower, compounded by economic and policy concerns, competitors are now racing each other to export vehicles overseas where many are getting a foothold in Europe and other regions.

In fact, passenger car exports from China jumped 85% in April, compared to the prior year, to nearly 800,000 vehicles, per the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). Within the broader figure was a surge in new energy vehicles (NEVs), which include both EVs as well as plug-in hybrids. The latter jumped more than 120% in April, compared to the prior year. BYD Co. has seen more demand overseas than anticipated, and this caused management to raise its 2026 export guidance up roughly 15% to 1.5 million vehicles.
Despite surging exports to support growth, China's two top EV makers took a walloping during the first quarter. BYD Co.'s net income tumbled 55% to 4.1 billion yuan, or $605 million, and Geely's net income dropped 26% to 4.2 billion yuan, or $619 million.
Impressive results
It's the combination of surging exports, cratering domestic sales, and tumbling profits for many automakers that makes what Nio achieved during Q1 more impressive. That's because Nio hasn't followed many of its competitors overseas: Through April, Nio has sold only 217 vehicles in Europe. Nio continues to focus on its home market, and despite broader pain in the industry, Nio delivered 37,705 vehicles in May, good for a staggering 62.3% gain over the prior year. It wasn't a one-hit wonder, either, as Nio's year-to-date deliveries have surged almost 69% compared to the prior year.
Nio's impressive results go beyond deliveries with vehicle margin checking in at 18.8% during the first quarter, up strongly compared to the prior year's 10.2% level. Furthermore, Nio's vehicle sales revenue jumped 129% in Q1, far outpacing its 98% delivery growth, suggesting the company's pricing remains strong amid the industry's EV price war.
"We also maintained positive non-GAAP operating profit in the quarter, and cash reserves continued to increase," said Stanley Yu Qu, NIO's chief financial officer, in a Q1 press release. He added:
We are encouraged by the continued improvement across all key operating metrics. Looking ahead, we will further enhance cost and operational efficiency while strengthening our sustainable business capabilities.
There's even reason for investors to think the best in 2026 is yet to come, as Nio only recently launched its flagship executive SUV, the ES9, on May 27.
What it all means
Nio's Q1 results were a rare bright spot in a mostly gloomy market. Its ability to improve vehicle unit economics amid a downturn should have investors feeling optimistic about the future, especially if and when China's market eventually rebounds and the price war fades. Furthermore, while Nio's focus remains on its domestic market, it does plan on expanding its sub-brand Firefly in Europe, which would be another lever for its growth in the near term. No matter how you slice it, right now Nio appears to be separating itself as one of the top Chinese auto stocks.

After posting a strong first-quarter result that included an adjusted operating profit, Nio's momentum continued into May, with deliveries reaching 37,705 vehicles -- a 62% increase over the prior year. There's even near-term optimism about growth, considering Nio launched the ES9, its flagship executive SUV, with deliveries starting on May 28.
May was just the continuation of a strong 2026 for Nio, as the company has delivered 150,526 vehicles year to date through May, which was a similarly impressive 69% year-over-year gain. In comparison, China's sales of new-energy vehicles dropped by 17% through the first four months of 2026.
Navigating the price war
What's even more impressive than Nio's bucking the sales spiral in China is that it's navigated the brutal price war while still supporting its margins. There are two key things to look at during its recent first-quarter results.
First, consider that Nio's deliveries during the first quarter soared 98.3%, but its vehicle revenue reached $3.3 billion on the back of a nearly 130% increase from the prior year. That suggests it's not simply higher volume driving Nio's vehicle revenue, but rather strong pricing in the face of a brutal price war. That's impressive. Second is that Nio's vehicle margin checked in at 18.8% during the first quarter of 2026, compared with a much more modest 10.2% during the prior year.
Furthermore, while Nio's net loss substantially narrowed during the first quarter, compared with the prior year, China's two top EV makers show how devastating the price war can be for many competitors. In fact, BYD's net income spiraled 55% lower to 4.1 billion yuan, or roughly $605 million, during the quarter ended March 31, while Geely's net income fell 26% to 4.2 billion yuan, or roughly $619 million.
What it all means
Nio's first quarter and May sales results were impressive. Nio's vehicle margin has now improved quarter over quarter for four consecutive quarters, and its "other sales" margin reached 20.6%, a four-year high, thanks to improving scale, sales volume, cost discipline, and improved profitability. The fact that Nio achieved all of this amid a brutal price war that hit BYD and Geely earnings and profitability hard should have savvy investors putting Nio on their watch list as the company expands its more affordable sub-brands and continues to launch vehicles for its premium namesake brand.

Nio's (NYSE: NIO) budget electric SUV starts at around $36,000, which isn't the most affordable EV in China, but it competes on price with the Tesla Model Y, which is one of the top-selling electric SUVs in the Middle Kingdom. It clocks in at about $2,400 cheaper.

Of course, that doesn't mean it's going to overtake Tesla this year, but it does mean that Nio has evolved into a legitimate contender in the race to bring an affordable electric SUV to market.
The battery subscription model could be a differentiator
One of Nio's unique advantages is its battery-as-a-service (BaaS) model, which allows customers to purchase a vehicle without the battery and instead pay a monthly subscription fee to access the company's battery-swapping network. That's where subscribers can pull into a battery-swapping station and get their depleted batteries replaced with fully charged batteries in about three minutes.
And it seems to be a preference for Nio customers, as the latest data indicate more than 90% of initial Onvo L80 buyers chose the BaaS option. Under that model, the starting price falls to just $23,100, though customers pay a monthly battery rental fee of around $130.
That's a significant reduction in upfront cost and suggests Nio's battery-swapping ecosystem remains attractive to consumers despite growing competition.
A big bet on chips
The company isn't just expanding its vehicle lineup, either. Nio is now actively establishing new subsidiaries focused on integrated circuit manufacturing and expanding its in-house chip capabilities. Over time, this could be a huge benefit.
Proprietary chips can influence vehicle performance, software capabilities, production costs, and supplier bargaining power. While deliveries remain the primary metric to watch, Nio's ability to develop and deploy its own semiconductor technology could become another competitive advantage. However, it'll take some time before we can get enough visibility on whether this strategy will actually prove fruitful.
That said, it does look like Nio's overall business is improving. For Q1, 2026, Nio announced that revenue surged 122% year over year from $1.66 million to $3.7 million. Vehicle deliveries rose more than 98%, vehicle margins increased from 10.2% to 18.8%, and net loss narrowed from approximately $945 million to just $45.5 million.
Is Nio stock worth buying?
Indeed, the bull case is becoming easier to understand. Nio now has multiple brands, a growing delivery base, a lower-priced SUV targeting mainstream buyers, and a strategy to gain greater control over key technologies.
But the bear case hasn't disappeared, either. Nio remains unprofitable and continues to face intense competition from Tesla, BYD, XPeng, and Li Auto while operating in one of the most aggressive EV pricing environments in the world.
Still, the Onvo L80 may be one of the company's most important launches to date. If it succeeds in driving higher volumes while Nio's chip strategy improves costs and product differentiation, the stock could finally have a clearer path toward a sustainable recovery.

There's a lot going on with the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) industry these days, and the noise hasn't done wonders for Nio (NYSE: NIO) stock lately, despite the company's recent analyst estimate-trouncing first-quarter results. Yet the carmaker's potential is enhanced by its position as the leader in one particularly promising EV market innovation -- battery swapping.

A quick switch
Nio has built and operates a network of EV battery swapping stations. Much like the drive-in oil change services in this country, Nio owners can pull into one of these facilities to exchange a depleting battery for a fully charged one.
Cleverly, the company provides two financial options. The first is a one-time payment for drivers who have chosen to own their batteries, while the second -- a battery-as-a-subscription (BaaS) tier -- grants four free swaps every month (at least in China; elsewhere, the limit is two).
The automated system makes the switch in only a few minutes. That compares very favorably with the optimal "fill times" of even the most advanced EV charging stations.
Industry website Inside EVs, citing Nio data, reported that the amount of power delivered through the China stations' swaps in the first five days of May alone totaled 15.4 gigawatt hours. That was an impressive 16% of the total delivered to all EVs in the massive country.
The segment leader
Nio clearly believes in battery swapping, as it's built a network of over 3,800 stations, all but 60 located in China. Those 60 international locations are scattered throughout Europe. Nio founder and CEO William Li recently stated that the EV maker aims to add 1,000 stations both next year and in 2028.
There are a few caveats here. The first is that Nio is not the only game in town. Most notably, Chinese auto battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology (OTC: CYATY) followed Nio into the segment and has built a network of its Evogo swap stations that is now more than 1,800 strong. Second, building out such physical infrastructure is capital-intensive, a particular challenge for the only recently profitable Nio.
Happily, Nio is taking care of both challenges with one approach. It and CATL are strategic partners, with CATL investing in the Nio subsidiary that operates that company's stations. Also, the two have agreed that the carmaker's upcoming Firefly compact vehicles will use batteries that can be swapped at CATL's facilities.
Finally, together the two companies are lobbying the Chinese government for a single, unifying standard for battery swapping in the country.
Wave of the future?
I view Nio's efforts with CATL as smart moves to conserve precious capital and advance toward a national standard that could greatly benefit its business.
I also feel that battery swapping could take off abroad, as it has in China. Saving time and money is a universal goal for consumers, especially those who have anxiously checked their watches while waiting for a traditional charger to finish its work.
That, coupled with the impressive first-quarter results published recently, makes the company a potential global giant well worth watching. I'd go so far as to flag its American depositary shares as a buy for those with some appetite for higher-than-average country and industry risk.

Nio's Battery Swap Network Just Delivered 16% of All EV Energy in China in 5 Days. Is the Market Sleeping on This?

Most investors are aware that China’s automotive market, especially the electric vehicle (EV) industry, is in a brutal price war. The EV industry is crowded with competitors, putting pressure on prices and margins, with uncertainty as to when the spiral lower will end.
Currently, many Chinese automakers are rushing to export vehicles outside of China to support growth, and that’s worked well for most. Nio (NYSE: NIO), however, is hanging tough in its domestic market, and its financials appear to be turning the corner.

But does that make the stock a buy, finally?
Results speak loudly
Let’s briefly point out some of the metrics that made Nio’s 2026 first quarter impressive. Despite the ultra-competitive Chinese automotive market, Nio’s vehicle deliveries totaled 83,465 in Q1, up 98.3% from the prior year. Better yet, despite the ongoing price war, Nio’s discipline enabled the company’s vehicle sales to increase 129.2% to 22,783 million yuan (about $3.3 billion) during the same time frame. The accelerated growth in sales revenue relative to deliveries suggests the company’s pricing power remains strong amid a domestic price war.
It wasn’t just Nio’s top line that was impressive, as vehicle margin checked in at nearly 19% during Q1, well ahead of the 10.2% during the prior-year’s Q1. Nio’s accelerating deliveries, top-line revenue, and vehicle margin helped drive its overall gross margin to 19% during Q1, compared to a much more modest 7.6% during 2025's first quarter.
It all came together at the bottom line, showing that perhaps Nio’s metrics have finally gotten over the hump. When excluding share-based compensation expenses, adjusted profit from operations totaled 66.8 million yuan, or $9.7 million, during Q1. This was a massive turnaround from the 5.95 billion yuan ($876 million) loss in Q1 2025.
Additional context
It’s impressive for Nio to be performing this well in a rough domestic market. Comparing the automaker’s gross profit to Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ: RIVN) and Lucid Group (NASDAQ: LCID), two similar competitors in terms of EVs albeit operating in different regions, shows how far ahead Nio really is.
There are two primary takeaways from the graph above. First, Rivian's progress over the past three years in improving its unit economics has been clear. Starting from a worse gross profit position than rival Lucid before quickly surpassing it, the company has consistently and impressively improved gross profits culminating in its first full-year gross profit for 2025. Its progress compared to rival Lucid should be lauded, but compared to Nio, it’s clear the latter is a step ahead in the long race to achieve consistent profitability.
Lucid is widely recognized for designing and producing some of the world’s most advanced EVs, but it’s consistently been hindered by production issues, recalls, and supplier hiccups, which have disappointed investors more than they'd like. Rivian, on the other hand, has made much progress but lacks the scale of Nio to turn its improving gross profitability into adjusted operating profits, though that day appears to be approaching.
Is Nio finally a buy?
Right now, Nio is doing what Rivian and Lucid both dream of doing: Proving to investors that operational efficiencies are at a level where long-term, sustained profitability is achievable. That’s exactly what investors want to see from Rivian and Lucid since that would unlock higher valuations and rising stock prices.
Nio also has momentum as it’s aggressively expanding beyond its namesake premium luxury Nio product lineup, and sub-brands such as Onvo and Firefly are expanding rapidly and allowing the company to capture valuable volume and scale even if in more price-sensitive segments. Nio’s Q1 results suggest that despite sub-brands expanding in volume in more affordable segments, the automaker’s pricing power remains strong, as do margins.
The Chinese EV maker still has plenty of questions, including whether its massive bet on a unique battery-swapping network will become a pillar of revenue and profits, and whether it'll create an ecosystem for its products and consumers, or if it’ll turn out to be a massive capital expenditure that never pays off.
While the jury remains out on that development, one thing is clear: If you’re looking for a young EV play, it might be time to look overseas, because Rivian and Lucid are a step behind Nio at the moment.
