MAT Makes Bullish Cross Above Critical Moving Average

We're more than halfway through Year 1 of Trump 2.0, and I stand by what I said before Inauguration Day: This administration has ushered in a stock picker's market.
In other words, investors who make smart moves into, and out of, individual dividend payers will do the best in the coming three-and-a-half years.
That puts holders of SPY, which must hold the entire S&P 500, in a jam. The S&P 500 trades at a nosebleed 25-times earnings, and SPY has no manager to shift away from overbought names and toward overlooked bargains. That's dangerous ground.
With that in mind, let's run through four tickers (all of which, yes, are SPY holdings) I urge you to avoid--or dump if you're sitting on them now.
2 Food Stocks to Fade as Trump 2.0 Rolls on
Let's start with General Mills (GIS) and The Kraft-Heinz Co. (KHC), the latter of which we've long criticized for being out of step with the times. Both have fallen hard since Election Day--a period when the S&P 500 has gained.
Now that might trigger your "bargain radar." If so, let me quickly banish that notion. Because the truth is, buying either of these laggards here would be a costly mistake.
Food Giants Fall Flat in Trump 2.0
Since we mainly buy blue chip names like these for dividend growth, this duo has naturally fallen off our buy list. General Mills, for example, has seen its payout growth slow sharply, rising by just a penny in each of the last two years:

KHC? Its 5.9% dividend yield might grab your attention, but that high yield only exists because the stock has plunged in the last decade (and share prices and dividend yields move in opposite directions).
The last move KHC's dividend made was actually a cut announced in early 2019, which took the share price down with it. That's proof positive that our Dividend Magnet--or the tendency for dividend growth to propel share prices higher--also works in reverse:

Throw in revenue growth that's gone nowhere for the better part of a decade and the fact that the company has a negative payout ratio (i.e., paying dividends while losing money over the last 12 months), and the odds of this payout getting off the mat, and giving the share price a lift, are slim.
Now there are reports that KHC is considering spinning off its grocery business into a new firm, effectively undoing the merger that created it in 2015. Normally, spinoffs are good for both the parent and the new company. But in this case, there's little value to be unlocked by replacing one lagging company with two.
2 Toymakers Facing Tariff (and Demographic) Pain Without End
One thing there's no doubt about: However President Trump's team negotiates trade deals from here on out, we can assume that overall tariff rates will be higher than they were during the pre-Trump era.
As a result, companies that source a lot of products in places like Vietnam and China will remain vulnerable.
Two I'm particularly worried about are toymakers Mattel (MAT) and Hasbro (HAS). The tariffs are already affecting their profit outlooks, and there's a limit to how many toys they can make in America, given the low margins on these products.
Beyond that, though, demographic changes are an overhang, with people having fewer children, especially in wealthier countries. In 2024, for example, there were just over 3.6 million births in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That was up 1% from 2023, but it's still a historically low figure when you consider that 2023's total was the lowest since 1979.
To be clear, I should say that both companies deserve credit for their efforts to shift production away from China, which has taken the brunt of the administration's ire on trade. In early May, Mattel execs said they got about 20% of their toys from China, and they aim to cut that to 10% by 2027.
Hasbro gets around 50% of its products from China, with the goal of cutting that below 40% in 2026. That's still a significant reliance, and you and I both know that relocating big parts of a supply chain isn't something that happens overnight. Moreover, there are few, if any, other places in the globe these companies can source from in order to avoid tariffs outright.
Beyond that, Hasbro gets a large slice of its sales (about 45% in the second quarter of 2025) from its consumer-products segment, home of its physical toys and games--even as more kids get their fix online.
The dividend? The stock yields a "ho-hum" 3.6% today, but its payout has gone nowhere since before the pandemic:

Moreover, like KHC, the stock boasts a negative payout ratio. That risks turning slowing dividend growth into something much worse: a payout cut. Mattel, for its part, is off our list because we're dividend investors first and foremost, and MAT doesn't pay a dividend, having suspended its payout in 2017.
The bottom line is that the winds have shifted against these two, and there's no sign of that changing. That's not only bad news for MAT and HAS--but for our SPY holders, too. But for savvy stock pickers, it sets up opportunities, especially if we look for stocks with safe dividends and strong Dividend Magnets that pull their prices higher.

I SPY 4 Dividends Circling the Drain in Trump 2.0

Looking at the underlying holdings of the ETFs in our coverage universe at ETF Channel, we have compared the trading price of each holding against the average analyst 12-month forward target price, and computed the weighted average implied analyst target price for the ETF itself. For the Avantis U.S. Large Cap Value ETF (Symbol: AVLV), we found that the implied analyst target price for the ETF based upon its underlying holdings is $78.26 per unit.

How The Parts Add Up: AVLV Targets $78

Mohawk Industries, Inc. MHK reported second-quarter 2025 results, with earnings and net sales beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate. On a year-over-year basis, the top line remained flat, while the bottom line decreased.
Shares of this leading global flooring manufacturer gained 1.1% in yesterday’s after-hours trading session.
The quarterly results reflect the impact of Mohawk’s ongoing efforts in operations, cost control and market development. Performance was supported by new premium residential and commercial product collections launched over the past two years. The company benefited from restructuring actions such as shutting high-cost sites, removing inefficient assets, and improving distribution and administration through technology.
Mohawk continued to focus on reducing costs. The company worked on enhancing equipment use, saving energy, improving supply-chain processes and redesigning products. Pricing pressure from weaker market volumes remained, but the company aimed to offset this through a better product and channel mix.
With rising tariffs, Mohawk highlighted the advantage of its manufacturing base in North America. The company took steps such as adjusting prices and optimizing supply chains. The U.S. government has set a new deadline for trade negotiations and the company is closely tracking developments to adjust its strategy.
Inside MHK’s Q2 Numbers
Mohawk reported adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.77, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.62 by 5.7%. In the year-ago quarter, the company reported an adjusted EPS of $3.
Net sales of $2.8 billion beat the consensus estimate of $2.79 billion by 0.4% and remained essentially flat year over year. On an adjusted basis, net sales were down 0.8% year over year.

Adjusted gross margin contracted 70 basis points (bps) year over year to 26.4%. Adjusted selling, general and administrative expenses, as a percent of net sales, rose 60 bps to 18.5% from the year-ago period. Adjusted operating margin contracted 120 bps to 8% from 9.2% a year ago.
Mohawk’s Segmental Details
Global Ceramic: Sales in the segment totaled $1.12 billion, up 0.5% year over year on a reported basis. On an adjusted basis, sales were up 1.1% from the year-ago level to $1.13 billion.
Adjusted operating income decreased to $90.3 million from $94.8 million a year ago. The segment’s adjusted operating margin contracted to 8.1% from 8.5% a year ago.
Flooring North America: Net sales of the segment amounted to $946.8 million, down 1.2% year over year on a reported basis.
The segment registered an adjusted operating profit of $69.2 million, down from $82 million reported in the prior-year period. Adjusted operating margin was 7.3%, down from 8.6% a year ago.
Flooring Rest of the World: Net sales in the segment increased 1% year over year on a reported basis to $734.4 million. On an adjusted basis, sales were down 3% from the year-ago level to $705 million.
Adjusted operating income was $76.4 million, down from $91.4 million reported a year ago. The segment’s adjusted operating margin was 10.4%, down from 12.6% in the year-ago period.
Financial Highlights of MHK
As of June 28, 2025, it had cash and cash equivalents of $546.7 million compared with $497.4 million on June 29, 2024. The long-term debt, less the current portion, was $1.74 billion compared with $1.69 billion at the end of second-quarter 2024.
At the end of the second quarter, the company generated free cash flow of $126.1 million compared with $142.2 million a year ago.
Focus on Operational Discipline Amid Market Uncertainty
The company is focusing on market development, operational efficiency and cost control to navigate current industry challenges. Ongoing inflation and weak consumer confidence are affecting overall sales. The timing of a recovery remains uncertain.
To support sales growth, the company is using its brand strength, product range and service to expand with existing and new customers. While pricing pressure stays high, the company is improving its mix with premium products, commercial sales and recent launches. Input cost pressure is expected to peak in the third quarter as higher costs pass through inventory.
Productivity measures are being implemented across operations to offset rising costs. Restructuring efforts are expected to result in about $100 million in savings this year. Most U.S. sales come from North America’s production, which may help the company under changing trade policies.
MHK’s Q3 View
MHK expects adjusted EPS in the range of $2.56-$2.66, excluding restructuring and other charges, compared with the year-ago figure of $2.9. The guidance does not reflect potential new tariffs, which are yet to be finalized.

And if there were thoughts that tariffs were slowing consumer spending, the company just announced its largest ever Prime Day sales event. Expanded to four days, the company generated $24.1 billion in sales, according to Adobe Analytics. That's more than double the sales it saw last Black Friday.
While Amazon showed it still has what it takes to drive retail sales, what's most exciting about the company is what is going on behind the scenes. Years of investment in logistics, automation, robots, and artificial intelligence (AI) are paying off, and making operations even more efficient. This is leading to cost savings and strong operating leverage.
In addition, Amazon Web Services (AWS) remains the market-share leader in cloud computing, where customers are using its services to build and deploy their own AI models and tools. It's also developed its own custom chips for training and inference, which gives it both performance and cost advantages.
For long-term investors, Amazon is a great stock to own.
2. Alibaba
Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) is a stock that remains on sale. It trades at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of just 11 times and has more than 30% of its market cap in cash and investments. The stock is not just cheap, but it's executing on multiple fronts.
Its cloud business has now seen AI-related revenue more than double for seven consecutive quarters. Meanwhile, Apple's decision to use Alibaba's Qwen model to power Apple Intelligence in China could be a solid growth driver.
The company's e-commerce business has also seen a solid turnaround. Alibaba invested to grow Taobao and Tmall's gross merchandise value, and now it's better monetizing its platforms through new software fees and AI tools. It's also just started with new initiatives to help further drive growth, including offering one-hour delivery and embedding shoppable Taobao links in posts on the popular Chinese Rednote app. In addition, the company continues to grow and scale out its international e-commerce segment, and it expects it to turn profitable soon.
Alibaba is still in the midst of its turnaround story, and at its current valuation there's a lot of upside if it continues to execute.
3. E.l.f. Beauty
A sudden slowdown in growth last quarter has put e.l.f. Beauty's (NYSE: ELF) stock on the sales rack. However, its pending acquisition of Rhode looks like it could be transformative. E.l.f. has already been one of the biggest winners in the mass-market cosmetics space, and now it's adding a fast-growing premium brand to its portfolio.
Rhode generated $212 million in sales over the past year with barely any paid marketing, a limited product lineup, and selling only through its website. That's impressive.
Rhode was already set to enter Sephora stores, and now e.l.f. will have the opportunity to plug Rhode into its existing retail relationships, including those with Ulta Beauty and Target, while ramping up product development and marketing. Hailey Bieber remains onboard as chief creative officer, which should help maintain brand momentum as the product line expands.
The strategy is smart. Premium skincare brands such as Rhode are simply going to have better margins than mass-market color cosmetics. This is a big opportunity for the company going forward and a reason to own the stock long term.
4. JAKKS Pacific
Toy company JAKKS Pacific (NASDAQ: JAKK) has quietly become one of the best turnaround stories in consumer products. Under CFO John Kimble -- formerly of Mattel and Disney -- the company has streamlined operations, improved operating margins, and returned to consistent profitability. Shares are up more than 200% over the past five years, but down 30% this year on tariff worries. The result is that the stock trades at just 8.5 times 2025 analyst earnings per share estimates and 6 times the 2026 consensus.
And it's not like the company is struggling. Sales jumped 26% in Q1, fueled by licensed products tied to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Disney's Moana 2. That momentum should continue with toy and costume launches tied to Dog Man, Minecraft, and Paw Patrol. A weak kids' movie calendar hurt last year, but that headwind has flipped.
JAKKS is also making smart moves outside of toys and costumes. It signed a deal with Authentic Brands to create not only toys but also seasonal outdoor products tied to lifestyle brands like Roxy, Quiksilver, and Juicy Couture. This could help diversify revenue and reduce the company's seasonality.
With strong licensing, operational discipline, and a rock-solid balance sheet (zero debt), JAKKS is a cash-generating small-cap that still looks mispriced.
5. Cava Group
Despite its strong results over the past year, Cava Group (NYSE: CAVA) stock is down nearly 50% off its highs, giving investors a solid entry point. The restaurant operator is doing for Mediterranean food what Chipotle did for Tex-Mex -- building a fast-casual empire. Same-store sales have now climbed double-digits for four straight quarters, and last quarter's 10.8% comp was driven mostly by traffic gains.
Newer menu items like fresh juices and grilled steak are lifting average tickets, while its loyalty program is helping bring guests back. With fresh, fast, customizable, and healthy food, Cava has all the right ingredients to be the next Chipotle.
The big story, though, is still store expansion. With fewer than 400 locations at the end of Q1 and a target of 1,000 by 2032, Cava has a long growth runway. It's expanded from the coasts into the Midwest, opening in Chicago and Detroit, and early results look strong.
Given the growth in front of it, Cava is a stock to own over the long haul.
