Wednesday’s stronger-than-expected US Jan payrolls report pushed bond yields higher and dampened expectations for additional Fed interest rate cuts, weighing on stocks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +3 bp to 4.17%, and the chance of a Fed rate cut at next month’s FOMC meeting fell to 6% from 23% before Wednesday’s payroll report.

Stocks were supported by Wednesday’s better-than-expected monthly US jobs report that showed January nonfarm payrolls increased more than expected by the most in 13 months, and the unemployment rate unexpectedly declined, signaling a stable labor market.
Wednesday’s decline in software companies limited gains in the broader market and kept the Dow Jones Industrials in negative territory. Also, real estate service stocks sank on Wednesday amid concerns that the newest crop of artificial intelligence applications and tools could disrupt the industry.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -0.3% in the week ended February 6, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -2.4% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index up +1.2%. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was unchanged from the prior week at 6.21%.
US Jan nonfarm payrolls rose +130,000, stronger than expectations of +65,000 and the most in 13 months. The Jan unemployment rate unexpectedly fell -0.1 to 4.3%, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of no change at 4.4%.
US Jan average hourly earnings rose +3.7% y/y, right on expectations.
The annual benchmark revision to 2025 US payrolls subtracted -862,000 jobs, a larger revision than the -825,000 expected.
Comments today from Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid were bearish for stocks and bonds when he said, "In my view, further rate cuts risk allowing high inflation to persist even longer," so the Fed should hold rates at a "somewhat restrictive" level.
The markets this week will focus on corporate earnings results and economic news. On Thursday, initial weekly unemployment claims are expected to fall by -7,000 to 224,000. Also, Jan existing home sales are expected to decline by -4.3% m/m to 4.16 million. On Friday, Jan CPI is expected to be up +2.5% y/y, and Jan core CPI is expected to be up +2.5% y/y.
Q4 earnings season is in full swing, as more than half of the S&P 500 companies have reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 78% of the 335 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 6% chance for a -25 bp rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Wednesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.19%. China’s Shanghai Composite climbed to a 1.5-week high and closed up +0.09%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 did not trade as markets in Japan were closed today for the National Foundation Day holiday.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) on Wednesday closed down by -7.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +3.1 bp to 4.174%. Mar T-notes fell from a 5-week high on Wednesday, and the 10-year T-note yield rose from a 6-week low of 4.117%. T-notes erased early gains on Wednesday and retreated on the stronger-than-expected US Jan payroll report, which is hawkish for Fed policy. Also, hawkish comments from Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid undercut T-note prices when he said the Fed should hold rates at a "somewhat restrictive" level. In addition, weak demand for the Treasury’s $42 billion of 10-year T-notes undercut T-note prices, as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.39, below the 10-auction average of 2.54.
European government bond yields moved lower on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 2-month low of 2.791% and finished down -1.6 bp to 2.792%. The 10-year UK gilt yield dropped to a 2-week low of 4.474% and finished down -3.0 bp to 4.476%.
Swaps are discounting a 3% chance of a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
Strength in chip makers and AI-infrastructure stocks is supportive for the broader market. Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +10% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100, and NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) and Microchip Technology (MCHP) closed up more than +5%. Also, Lam Research (LRCX) and Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +4%, and KLA Corp (KLAC), Applied Materials (AMAT), and Analog Devices (ADI) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), Texas Instruments (TXN), and Intel (INTC) closed up more than +2%.
Software stocks retreated on Wednesday, weighing on the overall market. Atlassian (TEAM) closed down more than -6%, and Intuit (INTU) and Workday (WDAY) closed down more than -5%. Also, Autodesk (ADSK) and Salesforce (CRM) closed down more than -4%. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT), Adobe (ADBE), and Datadog (DDOG) closed down more than -2%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks fell on Wednesday as Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) dropped by more than -1%. Coinbase Global (COIN) and Strategy (MSTR) closed down more than -5%, and Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed down more than -3%. Also, MARA Holdings (MARA) closed down more than -1%, and Riot Platforms (RIOT) closed down -0.20%.
Real estate service stocks sank on Wednesday amid concerns that the newest crop of artificial intelligence applications and tools could disrupt the industry. Cushman & Wakefield Ltd (CWK) closed down more than -13%, and CBRE Group (CBRE) closed down more than -12% to lead losers in the S&P 500. Also, Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) closed down more than -12%.
Teradata (TDC) closed up more than +29% after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of 74 cents, better than the consensus of 56 cents, and forecasting full-year adjusted EPS of $2.55 to $2.65, stronger than the consensus of $2.50.
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) closed up more than +25% after forecasting full-year net sales of $13.25 billion to $13.75 billion, well above the consensus of $12.43 billion.
Generac Holdings (GNRC) closed up more than +17% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after forecasting a full-year Ebitda margin of 18% to 19%, the midpoint above the consensus of 18.1%.
GlobalFoundries (GFS) closed up more than +16% after reporting Q4 net revenue of $1.83 billion, above the consensus of $1.80 billion.
Lattice Semiconductor (LSCC) closed up more than +15% after forecasting Q1 revenue of $158 million to $172 million, well above the consensus of $148.1 million.
Beta Technologies (BETA) closed up more than +15% after Amazon.com disclosed a 5.1% stake in the company.
Cloudflare (NET) closed up more than +5% after reporting Q4 revenue of $614.5 million, better than the consensus of $591.4 million, and forecasting full-year revenue of $2.79 billion to $2,80 billion, above the consensus of $2.74 billion.

Stocks Settle Mixed as Fed Rate Cut Chances Slip

Mattel, Inc. MAT reported fourth-quarter 2025 results, with earnings and revenues missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The top line increased year over year, while the bottom line declined from the prior-year quarter’s figure.
Following the results, the company's shares plunged 30.8% in the post-market trading session yesterday.
Negative investor sentiment was observed as management acknowledged that U.S. performance fell short of expectations, with December growth softer than anticipated. The company also cited margin and profitability pressure tied to higher discounting, inflation, foreign-exchange headwinds and inventory actions to support retailers, along with declines in certain categories such as Dolls and Infant, Toddler and Preschool. The company signaled that ongoing investments in digital games, technology and marketing are expected to pressure near-term margins.
Mattel’s Q4 Earnings & Sales Discussion
MAT reported an adjusted EPS of 39 cents, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 53 cents. It reported an adjusted EPS of 35 cents in the prior-year quarter.
Net sales amounted to $1.77 billion, missing the consensus estimate of $1.84 billion. The top line increased 7% on a reported basis and 5% in constant currency (cc) basis year over year.
Mattel, Inc. Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise
Net sales in the North America segment increased 5% year over year on a reported basis and at cc. The International segment’s net sales increased 11% year over year on a reported basis and 5% year over year at cc.
In the North America segment, gross billings increased 7% (as reported and at cc) year over year. This upside was attributed to a rise in Dolls, Vehicles, Action Figures, Building Sets, Games and Other.
Gross billings in the International segment increased 10% year over year on a reported basis and 4% at cc. The uptick was primarily driven by a rise in gross billings in the EMEA, Latin America and Asia Pacific regions.
MAT’s Category-Wise Worldwide Sales
Mattel, through its subsidiaries, sells a broad range of toys. These items are grouped under different categories: Dolls, Infant, Toddler and Preschool, Vehicles and Action Figures, Building Sets, Games and Other.
Worldwide gross billings by Mattel Power Brands increased 8% year over year on a reported basis and 6% at cc to $2.04 billion. The gross billings for Barbie witnessed a rise of 2% year over year on a reported basis.
Gross billings for Hot Wheels increased 20% on a reported basis and 16% at cc year over year. On the other hand, gross billings for Fisher-Price increased 1% on a reported basis and declined 1% at cc year over year. Gross billings at Other increased 6% and 4% on a reported basis and at cc, respectively, year over year.
Mattel’s Q4 Operating Results
During the fourth quarter, Mattel’s adjusted gross margin was 46%, down 480 basis points year over year. The downside was attributed to higher discounts, inflation, unfavorable foreign exchange and the timing lag between mitigating actions and the recognition of tariff costs. However, this was partially offset by cost savings.
Adjusted EBITDA during the quarter was $234.2 million compared with $248.9 million reported in the prior-year quarter.
Balance Sheet of MAT
As of Dec. 31, 2025, MAT’s cash and equivalents were $1.24 billion compared with $1.39 billion as of Dec. 31, 2024. Total inventories at the end of the quarter were $563.1 million compared with $501.7 million reported in the prior-year quarter.
Long-term debt (as of Dec. 31, 2025) was $2.33 billion, almost flat year over year. Shareholders’ equity was $2.23 billion at the end of the quarter.
MAT 2025 Highlights
Net sales in 2025 amounted to $5.35 billion compared with $5.38 billion in 2024.
Net income in 2025 came in at $397.6 million compared with $541.8 million reported in 2024.
In 2025, adjusted diluted EPS came in at $1.41 compared with $1.62 reported in the previous year.
Other Business Updates
Mattel has entered into a global, multiyear licensing agreement with Paramount to develop and market a broad range of consumer products tied to the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. Beginning in 2027, the company is set to launch action figures, playsets, vehicles, games, collectibles and role-play items across global retail channels, alongside new product lines supporting the animated sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 in 2027 and an upcoming live-action/CG hybrid film slated for 2028. Executives from both companies highlighted the franchise’s enduring cross-generational appeal and emphasized opportunities to expand fan engagement through innovative product offerings worldwide. The agreement strengthens the longstanding collaboration between Mattel and Paramount’s Products & Experiences division, reinforcing their shared focus on scaling iconic franchises across multiple platforms and touchpoints.
Mattel has agreed to acquire the remaining 50% stake in Mattel163 from NetEase, taking full ownership of the mobile game studio in a deal valuing the business at $318 million, with $159 million payable for NetEase’s interest. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the first quarter, subject to customary conditions.
Established in 2018, Mattel163 develops mobile games based on Mattel’s IP, including Uno!, Uno Wonder, Phase 10 and Skip-Bo, and has built a base of about 20 million monthly active users and over 550 million downloads globally. Full ownership is expected to enhance the company’s in-house development, publishing and digital customer acquisition capabilities, while improving alignment with its broader product roadmap. The acquisition supports Mattel’s strategy to maximize the value of its IP across high-margin entertainment verticals, alongside its digital focus on licensing partnerships, self-publishing initiatives slated for 2026, and expansion on platforms such as Roblox and Fortnite.
MAT’s 2026 Outlook
Management expects 2026 net sales to increase in the range of 3-6% year over year. The company expects adjusted operating income to be between $550 and $600 million.
Mattel anticipates adjusted EPS to be between $1.18 and $1.30 compared with $1.41 reported in 2025. The adjusted tax rate is considered to be approximately 24%.

Teradata (TDC) is up more than +22% after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of 74 cents, better than the consensus of 56 cents, and forecasting full-year adjusted EPS of $2.55 to $2.65, stronger than the consensus of $2.50.
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) is up more than +21% after forecasting full-year net sales of $13.25 billion to $13.75 billion, well above the consensus of $12.43 billion.
Generac Holdings (GNRC) is up more than +16% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after forecasting a full-year Ebitda margin of 18% to 19%, the midpoint above the consensus of 18.1%.
Lattice Semiconductor (LSCC) is up more than +16% after forecasting Q1 revenue of $158 million to $172 million, well above the consensus of $148.1 million.
Beta Technologies (BETA) is up more than +15% after Amazon.com disclosed a 5.1% stake in the company.
GlobalFoundries (GFS) is up more than +13% after reporting Q4 net revenue of $1.83 billion, above the consensus of $1.80 billion.
Cloudflare (NET) is up more than +8% after reporting Q4 revenue of $614.5 million, better than the consensus of $591.4 million, and forecasting full-year revenue of $2.79 billion to $2,80 billion, above the consensus of $2.74 billion.
Gilead Sciences (GILD) is up more than +5% after reporting Q4 revenue of $7.93 billion, above the consensus of $7.71 billion.
AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) is up more than +2% after reporting a successful unfolding of its next-generation BlueBird 6 satellite.

Stocks Turn Mixed as Software Stocks Slide

Legendary investor Warren Buffett advises to be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful. One way we can try to measure the level of fear in a given stock is through a technical analysis indicator called the Relative Strength Index, or RSI, which measures momentum on a scale of zero to 100. A stock is considered to be oversold if the RSI reading falls below 30.
In trading on Wednesday, shares of Mattel Inc (Symbol: MAT) entered into oversold territory, hitting an RSI reading of 23.0, after changing hands as low as $15.05 per share. By comparison, the current RSI reading of the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) is 52.1. A bullish investor could look at MAT's 23.0 RSI reading today as a sign that the recent heavy selling is in the process of exhausting itself, and begin to look for entry point opportunities on the buy side. RSI Alert: Mattel (MAT) Now Oversold

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -0.35%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.34%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is down -0.82%. March E-mini S&P futures (ESH26) are down -0.20%, and March E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQH26) are down -0.35%.
Stock indexes are sliding today after nonfarm payrolls increased more than expected last month by the most in 13 months, and the unemployment rate unexpectedly declined, signaling a stable labor market. On the negative side, the strength of the Jan payroll report pushed bond yields higher and dampened expectations for additional Fed interest rate cuts. The 10-year T-note yield is up +4 bp to 4.18%, and the chance of a Fed rate cut at next month’s FOMC meeting fell to 6% from 23% before today’s payroll report.

Corporate earnings results are mixed for stocks. Vertiv Holdings is up more than +23% after reporting stronger-than-expected Q1 EPS with bullish forward guidance. Also, Cloudflare is up more than +10% after reporting better-than-expected Q4 earnings and giving a bullish revenue forecast. Conversely, Mattel is down more than -27% after forecasting weaker-than-expected 2026 adjusted EPS. Also, Robinhood is down more than -9% after forecasting weaker-than-expected Q1 EPS.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -0.3% in the week ended February 6, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -2.4% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index up +1.2%. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was unchanged from the prior week at 6.21%.
US Jan nonfarm payrolls rose +130,000, stronger than expectations of +65,000 and the most in 13 months. The Jan unemployment rate unexpectedly fell -0.1 to 4.3%, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of no change at 4.4%.
US Jan average hourly earnings rose +3.7% y/y, right on expectations.
The markets this week will focus on corporate earnings results and economic news. On Thursday, initial weekly unemployment claims are expected to fall by -7,000 to 224,000. Also, Jan existing home sales are expected to decline by -4.3% m/m to 4.16 million. On Friday, Jan CPI is expected to be up +2.5% y/y, and Jan core CPI is expected to be up +2.5% y/y.
Q4 earnings season is in full swing, as more than half of the S&P 500 companies have reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 78% of the 319 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 6% chance for a -25 bp rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets are higher today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.32%. China’s Shanghai Composite climbed to a 1.5-week high and closed up +0.09%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 did not trade as markets in Japan were closed today for the National Foundation Day holiday.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) today are down by -11 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +4.2 bp to 4.184%. Mar T-notes fell from a 5-week high today, and the 10-year T-note yield rose from a 6-week low of 4.117%. T-notes erased early gains today and retreated on the stronger-than-expected US Jan payroll report, which is hawkish for Fed policy. Also, strength in stocks today has curbed safe-haven demand for T-notes. In addition, supply pressures are bearish for T-notes as the Treasury will auction $42 billion of 10-year T-notes later today.
European government bond yields are mixed today. The 10-year German bund yield rebounded from a 2-month low of 2.791% and is up +0.6 bp to 2.815%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down -0.6 bp to 4.500%.
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance of a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
Strength in chip makers and AI-infrastructure stocks is supportive for the broader market. Micron Technology (MU) is up more than +6% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100. Also, Lam Research (LRCX) is up more than +4%, and Western Digital (WDC), KLA Corp (KLAC), Applied Materials (AMAT), Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), Microchip Technology (MCHP), and Intel (INTC) are up more than +3%. In addition, ASML Holding NV (ASML), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), Analog Devices (ADI), and Texas Instruments (TXN) are up more than +2%.

Mattel (MAT) Q4 2025 Earnings Call Transcript

Mattel (MAT) came out with quarterly earnings of $0.18 per share, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.27 per share. This compares to earnings of $0.53 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.
This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of -33.33%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this toy maker would post earnings of $0.73 per share when it actually produced earnings of $0.82, delivering a surprise of 12.33%.
Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates three times.
Mattel, which belongs to the Zacks Toys - Games - Hobbies industry, posted revenues of $1.4 billion for the quarter ended December 2022, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 15.44%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $1.79 billion. The company has topped consensus revenue estimates three times over the last four quarters.
The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.

A monumental Supreme Court ruling on the Trump administration's tariffs could be handed down this week.
Should the high court reverse Trump's reciprocal tariffs, many stocks could soar.
However, any surge could be short-lived.
"The Oracle of Omaha" never claimed to have any oracular powers. I'm referring, of course, to Warren Buffett. The legendary investor wrote in a 2008 New York Times op-ed, "I can't predict the short-term movements of the stock market. I haven't the faintest idea as to whether stocks will be higher or lower a month or a year from now."
I agree with Buffett and his approach to investing. I don't know what the stock market will do over the next month or year. Don't look to me for any help with market timing. However, I do have an idea about what may happen this week. I predict the stock market will soar on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026 – but only if one specific thing happens.

A monumental decision
Many observers expected the Supreme Court to hand down its decision on a challenge to President Trump's levying of global tariffs using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) last week. That didn't happen. However, the nation's highest court will announce some rulings on Wednesday. The odds appear to be good that the tariff decision will be among them.
There are three key issues behind the challenges to the president's tariffs:
The U.S. Constitution explicitly grants the authority to levy taxes (and tariffs are essentially taxes on imports) to the U.S. Congress.
The IEEPA, on which the tariffs are based, doesn't even mention the word "tariffs."
While Congress gave the executive branch some authority over international trade with the IEEPA, the president can only take actions in response to emergencies. Opponents contend that Trump's tariffs don't address emergencies.
Two lower federal courts have already ruled against the Trump administration. Online betting platform Polymarket shows a 72% that the Supreme Court will uphold those decisions.
Trump posted on Truth Social on Monday, "If the Supreme Court rules against the United States of America on this National Security bonanza, WE'RE SCREWED." Some, however, view the court's decision as crucial in upholding the separation of powers between U.S. government branches established by the country's founders.
Why the stock market could soar
I predict the stock market will soar on Wednesday if the Supreme Court announces that it's overturning the White House's tariffs based on the IEEPA. Why? Many investors would breathe a big sigh of relief if the tariffs were reversed.
Moody's Analytics (NYSE: MCO) chief economist Mark Zandi blames the stagnant job market in large part on the Trump administration's tariffs. He posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Jan. 11, 2026, "There has been no job growth (and likely job declines after all the revisions are in), as measured by either the payroll or household employment data, since Liberation Day last April, following the President's announcement of significant reciprocal tariffs."
Unemployment has indeed increased since earlier this year, as Zandi argues. He believes that "the fastest way to boost the job market would be for the Supreme Court to declare the reciprocal tariffs unlawful." Usually, what's good for the job market is also good for the stock market.
Which stocks could benefit the most from a Supreme Court decision overturning the tariffs? Potential examples include Mattel (NASDAQ: MAT) and Nike (NYSE: NKE), which import heavily from China, and UPS (NYSE: UPS), whose most profitable trading lane is between China and the U.S.
However, it's possible that stocks that don't have strong connections with imports could also jump. Lower tariffs could ease concerns about inflation and potentially give the Federal Reserve more flexibility to lower interest rates further, according to Clear Street analyst Owen Lau. Lower interest rates would help many companies.
A temporary boost?
Investors shouldn't get too excited about the prospects of the Supreme Court rolling back the reciprocal tariffs, though. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent believes the Trump administration "can recreate the exact tariff structure" in jeopardy by basing tariffs on other federal regulations.
For example, Sections 301 and 302 of the Trade Act of 1974 allow the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to impose tariffs if an investigation determines that a country has implemented unfair trade policies that harm the U.S. However, there are some restrictions in the legislation that could hinder the Trump administration's ability to impose tariffs as easily and broadly as it would like.
It seems to be a pretty safe bet that more tariffs will be on the way to replace any tariffs nixed by the Supreme Court, assuming the court rules against the White House. If so, any post-ruling boost for the stock market is likely to be only temporary.
