Bring back the bulls?
A reasonable case can be made that Trump could suspend tariffs and that his action would indeed spark a stock market surge. We saw this exact scenario play out several times last year. An acronym was even coined to describe the phenomenon: TACO (short for "Trump always chickens out.") Anytime the president eased back from levying steep tariffs, the stock market rebounded.
Should Trump suspend tariffs this year, would it cause stocks to take off? Probably. For one thing, many companies that have been absorbing part or all of the higher costs related to tariffs would experience an immediate earnings boost.
A tariff suspension could also give the Federal Reserve more flexibility to potentially lower interest rates, which would be great news for many stocks. Fed Chair Jerome Powell mentioned tariffs 24 times during his March 16, 2026, press conference. He stated unequivocally that inflation was higher as a direct result of the Trump administration's tariffs.
The obvious winners if Trump suspends tariffs include the stocks of companies that import clothes, such as Nike (NYSE: NKE), and those that import toys, such as Mattel (NASDAQ: MAT). Industrial stocks, including Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) and Deere (NYSE: DE), would also likely benefit.
Perhaps not the catalyst you might expect
However, the suspension of tariffs might not be the catalyst that you might expect. Even if stocks rebounded initially, the momentum could be only fleeting.
One key reason why is that tariffs aren't the only headwind for the stock market. Geopolitical risks unrelated to trade policies pose an even greater challenge. The repercussions of the Iran conflict currently rank at the top of the list.
Some stocks benefit from tariffs. Their losses in a scenario where Trump suspended tariffs could at least partially offset the gains achieved by other stocks. We could see more of a sector rotation than an across-the-board rally.
Perhaps the biggest wild card, though, is that investors could doubt that the tariff suspension will be permanent. Trump has made it crystal clear that he wants tariffs. Any suspension would likely be widely viewed as a temporary tactic to lower the political heat on Republicans.
What should investors do?
It wouldn't be shocking if President Trump put some tariffs on hold over the coming months. However, betting on this happening isn't a smart investment strategy. What should investors do?
Make sure your portfolio is well diversified. Broad diversification gives you a cushion when some sectors underperform. Don't just diversify with any stocks, though. Invest in companies with financial strength and pricing power.
Most importantly, think long-term. However long tariffs remain in place, the best way to make money is to resist the temptation to sell just because volatility increases.
Maybe Trump will ignite a stock market rally by suspending tariffs; maybe he won't. Either way, building a diversified portfolio and adopting a long-term mindset can help you make money regardless of what happens in Washington, D.C.

1. E.l.f. Beauty
E.l.f. Beauty (NYSE: ELF) is a growth stock trading at a cheap valuation. It has a reasonable forward price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of 24 times based on next fiscal year's earnings estimates but a minuscule price/earnings-to-growth (PEG) ratio of below 0.4. Positive PEGs below 1 are typically considered undervalued, so a PEG well below 0.5 clearly puts e.l.f. on the clearance rack.
The company has done a great job over the years of connecting with younger consumers, taking significant market share in the mass cosmetics space, and gaining shelf space. Now the company has a big opportunity to apply that same playbook to Rhode, the fast-growing skincare brand it recently acquired from celebrity Hailey Bieber. Bieber was able to grow the brand to more than $200 million in sales in less than three years with a small product assortment sold through her website and little marketing outside her own social media influence.
Rhode just recently started selling its products at LVMH's Sephora stores, and e.l.f. will have a long runway in increasing its distribution. With only about a dozen products when it acquired the company, it will also be able to gradually increase the product assortment and put it into its marketing engine. This should help drive strong growth in the coming year, making the stock a solid buy at current levels.
2. Jakks Pacific
For investors willing to dig deep into the bargain bin and find an under-the-radar value name, I'd point them in the direction of Jakks Pacific (NASDAQ: JAKK), which trades at a forward P/E of under 6.5 times. Don't let its valuation fool you, though, as the toymaker has made a lot of strides over the past few years and has a nice potential catalyst on the horizon.
Under CFO John Kimble, who previously had stints at Mattel and Walt Disney, Jakks has become much more disciplined. This could be seen last year, when, despite a tough consumer environment and tariffs, the company was able to achieve its highest gross margins in more than 15 years. That's impressive and something you rarely see when a company's sales decline.
Meanwhile, Jakks has a big potential catalyst this year with one of the biggest children's movie slates in quite some time. Toy and costume sales (a big part of the company's business) are often driven by hit kids' movies, and this year is filled with potential blockbusters.
Given this background and the benefit of Halloween falling on a weekend this year (which helps costume sales), the revenue forecast for Jakks looks conservative. Between its cheap valuation and the upcoming children's movie line-up, the stock is a buy.

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) closed unchanged on Wednesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.13%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +0.29%. March E-mini S&P futures (ESH26) rose +0.01%, and March E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQH26) rose +0.26%.
Stock indexes settled mixed on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 posting a 2-week high and the Nasdaq 100 posting a 1-week high. Wednesday’s stronger-than-expected US Jan payrolls report pushed bond yields higher and dampened expectations for additional Fed interest rate cuts, weighing on stocks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +3 bp to 4.17%, and the chance of a Fed rate cut at next month’s FOMC meeting fell to 6% from 23% before Wednesday’s payroll report.

Stocks were supported by Wednesday’s better-than-expected monthly US jobs report that showed January nonfarm payrolls increased more than expected by the most in 13 months, and the unemployment rate unexpectedly declined, signaling a stable labor market.
Wednesday’s decline in software companies limited gains in the broader market and kept the Dow Jones Industrials in negative territory. Also, real estate service stocks sank on Wednesday amid concerns that the newest crop of artificial intelligence applications and tools could disrupt the industry.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -0.3% in the week ended February 6, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -2.4% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index up +1.2%. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was unchanged from the prior week at 6.21%.
US Jan nonfarm payrolls rose +130,000, stronger than expectations of +65,000 and the most in 13 months. The Jan unemployment rate unexpectedly fell -0.1 to 4.3%, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of no change at 4.4%.
US Jan average hourly earnings rose +3.7% y/y, right on expectations.
The annual benchmark revision to 2025 US payrolls subtracted -862,000 jobs, a larger revision than the -825,000 expected.
Comments today from Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid were bearish for stocks and bonds when he said, "In my view, further rate cuts risk allowing high inflation to persist even longer," so the Fed should hold rates at a "somewhat restrictive" level.
The markets this week will focus on corporate earnings results and economic news. On Thursday, initial weekly unemployment claims are expected to fall by -7,000 to 224,000. Also, Jan existing home sales are expected to decline by -4.3% m/m to 4.16 million. On Friday, Jan CPI is expected to be up +2.5% y/y, and Jan core CPI is expected to be up +2.5% y/y.
Q4 earnings season is in full swing, as more than half of the S&P 500 companies have reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 78% of the 335 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 6% chance for a -25 bp rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Wednesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.19%. China’s Shanghai Composite climbed to a 1.5-week high and closed up +0.09%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 did not trade as markets in Japan were closed today for the National Foundation Day holiday.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) on Wednesday closed down by -7.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +3.1 bp to 4.174%. Mar T-notes fell from a 5-week high on Wednesday, and the 10-year T-note yield rose from a 6-week low of 4.117%. T-notes erased early gains on Wednesday and retreated on the stronger-than-expected US Jan payroll report, which is hawkish for Fed policy. Also, hawkish comments from Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid undercut T-note prices when he said the Fed should hold rates at a "somewhat restrictive" level. In addition, weak demand for the Treasury’s $42 billion of 10-year T-notes undercut T-note prices, as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.39, below the 10-auction average of 2.54.
European government bond yields moved lower on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 2-month low of 2.791% and finished down -1.6 bp to 2.792%. The 10-year UK gilt yield dropped to a 2-week low of 4.474% and finished down -3.0 bp to 4.476%.
Swaps are discounting a 3% chance of a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
Strength in chip makers and AI-infrastructure stocks is supportive for the broader market. Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +10% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100, and NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) and Microchip Technology (MCHP) closed up more than +5%. Also, Lam Research (LRCX) and Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +4%, and KLA Corp (KLAC), Applied Materials (AMAT), and Analog Devices (ADI) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), Texas Instruments (TXN), and Intel (INTC) closed up more than +2%.
Software stocks retreated on Wednesday, weighing on the overall market. Atlassian (TEAM) closed down more than -6%, and Intuit (INTU) and Workday (WDAY) closed down more than -5%. Also, Autodesk (ADSK) and Salesforce (CRM) closed down more than -4%. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT), Adobe (ADBE), and Datadog (DDOG) closed down more than -2%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks fell on Wednesday as Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) dropped by more than -1%. Coinbase Global (COIN) and Strategy (MSTR) closed down more than -5%, and Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed down more than -3%. Also, MARA Holdings (MARA) closed down more than -1%, and Riot Platforms (RIOT) closed down -0.20%.
Real estate service stocks sank on Wednesday amid concerns that the newest crop of artificial intelligence applications and tools could disrupt the industry. Cushman & Wakefield Ltd (CWK) closed down more than -13%, and CBRE Group (CBRE) closed down more than -12% to lead losers in the S&P 500. Also, Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) closed down more than -12%.
Teradata (TDC) closed up more than +29% after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of 74 cents, better than the consensus of 56 cents, and forecasting full-year adjusted EPS of $2.55 to $2.65, stronger than the consensus of $2.50.
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) closed up more than +25% after forecasting full-year net sales of $13.25 billion to $13.75 billion, well above the consensus of $12.43 billion.
Generac Holdings (GNRC) closed up more than +17% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after forecasting a full-year Ebitda margin of 18% to 19%, the midpoint above the consensus of 18.1%.
GlobalFoundries (GFS) closed up more than +16% after reporting Q4 net revenue of $1.83 billion, above the consensus of $1.80 billion.
Lattice Semiconductor (LSCC) closed up more than +15% after forecasting Q1 revenue of $158 million to $172 million, well above the consensus of $148.1 million.
Beta Technologies (BETA) closed up more than +15% after Amazon.com disclosed a 5.1% stake in the company.
Cloudflare (NET) closed up more than +5% after reporting Q4 revenue of $614.5 million, better than the consensus of $591.4 million, and forecasting full-year revenue of $2.79 billion to $2,80 billion, above the consensus of $2.74 billion.
Gilead Sciences (GILD) closed up more than +5% after reporting Q4 revenue of $7.93 billion, above the consensus of $7.71 billion.
Rapid7 Inc (RPD) closed down more than -28% after forecasting full-year revenue of $835 million to $843 million, weaker than the consensus of $869.8 million.

Stocks Settle Mixed as Fed Rate Cut Chances Slip

Mattel, Inc. MAT reported fourth-quarter 2025 results, with earnings and revenues missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The top line increased year over year, while the bottom line declined from the prior-year quarter’s figure.
Following the results, the company's shares plunged 30.8% in the post-market trading session yesterday.
Negative investor sentiment was observed as management acknowledged that U.S. performance fell short of expectations, with December growth softer than anticipated. The company also cited margin and profitability pressure tied to higher discounting, inflation, foreign-exchange headwinds and inventory actions to support retailers, along with declines in certain categories such as Dolls and Infant, Toddler and Preschool. The company signaled that ongoing investments in digital games, technology and marketing are expected to pressure near-term margins.
Mattel’s Q4 Earnings & Sales Discussion
MAT reported an adjusted EPS of 39 cents, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 53 cents. It reported an adjusted EPS of 35 cents in the prior-year quarter.
Net sales amounted to $1.77 billion, missing the consensus estimate of $1.84 billion. The top line increased 7% on a reported basis and 5% in constant currency (cc) basis year over year.
Mattel, Inc. Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise
Net sales in the North America segment increased 5% year over year on a reported basis and at cc. The International segment’s net sales increased 11% year over year on a reported basis and 5% year over year at cc.
In the North America segment, gross billings increased 7% (as reported and at cc) year over year. This upside was attributed to a rise in Dolls, Vehicles, Action Figures, Building Sets, Games and Other.
Gross billings in the International segment increased 10% year over year on a reported basis and 4% at cc. The uptick was primarily driven by a rise in gross billings in the EMEA, Latin America and Asia Pacific regions.
MAT’s Category-Wise Worldwide Sales
Mattel, through its subsidiaries, sells a broad range of toys. These items are grouped under different categories: Dolls, Infant, Toddler and Preschool, Vehicles and Action Figures, Building Sets, Games and Other.
Worldwide gross billings by Mattel Power Brands increased 8% year over year on a reported basis and 6% at cc to $2.04 billion. The gross billings for Barbie witnessed a rise of 2% year over year on a reported basis.
Gross billings for Hot Wheels increased 20% on a reported basis and 16% at cc year over year. On the other hand, gross billings for Fisher-Price increased 1% on a reported basis and declined 1% at cc year over year. Gross billings at Other increased 6% and 4% on a reported basis and at cc, respectively, year over year.
Mattel’s Q4 Operating Results
During the fourth quarter, Mattel’s adjusted gross margin was 46%, down 480 basis points year over year. The downside was attributed to higher discounts, inflation, unfavorable foreign exchange and the timing lag between mitigating actions and the recognition of tariff costs. However, this was partially offset by cost savings.
Adjusted EBITDA during the quarter was $234.2 million compared with $248.9 million reported in the prior-year quarter.
Balance Sheet of MAT
As of Dec. 31, 2025, MAT’s cash and equivalents were $1.24 billion compared with $1.39 billion as of Dec. 31, 2024. Total inventories at the end of the quarter were $563.1 million compared with $501.7 million reported in the prior-year quarter.
Long-term debt (as of Dec. 31, 2025) was $2.33 billion, almost flat year over year. Shareholders’ equity was $2.23 billion at the end of the quarter.
MAT 2025 Highlights
Net sales in 2025 amounted to $5.35 billion compared with $5.38 billion in 2024.
Net income in 2025 came in at $397.6 million compared with $541.8 million reported in 2024.
In 2025, adjusted diluted EPS came in at $1.41 compared with $1.62 reported in the previous year.
Other Business Updates
Mattel has entered into a global, multiyear licensing agreement with Paramount to develop and market a broad range of consumer products tied to the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. Beginning in 2027, the company is set to launch action figures, playsets, vehicles, games, collectibles and role-play items across global retail channels, alongside new product lines supporting the animated sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 in 2027 and an upcoming live-action/CG hybrid film slated for 2028. Executives from both companies highlighted the franchise’s enduring cross-generational appeal and emphasized opportunities to expand fan engagement through innovative product offerings worldwide. The agreement strengthens the longstanding collaboration between Mattel and Paramount’s Products & Experiences division, reinforcing their shared focus on scaling iconic franchises across multiple platforms and touchpoints.
Mattel has agreed to acquire the remaining 50% stake in Mattel163 from NetEase, taking full ownership of the mobile game studio in a deal valuing the business at $318 million, with $159 million payable for NetEase’s interest. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the first quarter, subject to customary conditions.
Established in 2018, Mattel163 develops mobile games based on Mattel’s IP, including Uno!, Uno Wonder, Phase 10 and Skip-Bo, and has built a base of about 20 million monthly active users and over 550 million downloads globally. Full ownership is expected to enhance the company’s in-house development, publishing and digital customer acquisition capabilities, while improving alignment with its broader product roadmap. The acquisition supports Mattel’s strategy to maximize the value of its IP across high-margin entertainment verticals, alongside its digital focus on licensing partnerships, self-publishing initiatives slated for 2026, and expansion on platforms such as Roblox and Fortnite.
MAT’s 2026 Outlook
Management expects 2026 net sales to increase in the range of 3-6% year over year. The company expects adjusted operating income to be between $550 and $600 million.
Mattel anticipates adjusted EPS to be between $1.18 and $1.30 compared with $1.41 reported in 2025. The adjusted tax rate is considered to be approximately 24%.

Mattel Q4 Earnings & Revenues Miss Estimates, Stock Down

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -0.02%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.19%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.10%. March E-mini S&P futures (ESH26) are down -0.08%, and March E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQH26) are up +0.13%.
Stock indexes gave up an early advance today and turned mixed, led by a selloff in software companies. Also, today’s stronger-than-expected US Jan payrolls report pushed bond yields higher and dampened expectations for additional Fed interest rate cuts, weighing on stocks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +3 bp to 4.17%, and the chance of a Fed rate cut at next month’s FOMC meeting fell to 8% from 23% before today’s payroll report.

Stock indexes initially moved higher today, with the S&P 500 posting a 2-week high and the Nasdaq 100 posting a 1-week high. Stocks found support on today’s better-than-expected monthly US jobs report that showed nonfarm payrolls increased more than expected last month by the most in 13 months, and the unemployment rate unexpectedly declined, signaling a stable labor market.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -0.3% in the week ended February 6, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -2.4% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index up +1.2%. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was unchanged from the prior week at 6.21%.
US Jan nonfarm payrolls rose +130,000, stronger than expectations of +65,000 and the most in 13 months. The Jan unemployment rate unexpectedly fell -0.1 to 4.3%, showing a stronger labor market than expectations of no change at 4.4%.
US Jan average hourly earnings rose +3.7% y/y, right on expectations.
The annual benchmark revision to 2025 US payrolls subtracted -862,000 jobs, a larger revision than the -825,000 expected.
Comments today from Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid were bearish for stocks and bonds when he said, "In my view, further rate cuts risk allowing high inflation to persist even longer," so the Fed should hold rates at a "somewhat restrictive" level.
The markets this week will focus on corporate earnings results and economic news. On Thursday, initial weekly unemployment claims are expected to fall by -7,000 to 224,000. Also, Jan existing home sales are expected to decline by -4.3% m/m to 4.16 million. On Friday, Jan CPI is expected to be up +2.5% y/y, and Jan core CPI is expected to be up +2.5% y/y.
Q4 earnings season is in full swing, as more than half of the S&P 500 companies have reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 78% of the 319 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting an 8% chance for a -25 bp rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.32%. China’s Shanghai Composite climbed to a 1.5-week high and closed up +0.09%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 did not trade as markets in Japan were closed today for the National Foundation Day holiday.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) today are down by -7 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +2.8 bp to 4.170%. Mar T-notes fell from a 5-week high today, and the 10-year T-note yield rose from a 6-week low of 4.117%. T-notes erased early gains today and retreated on the stronger-than-expected US Jan payroll report, which is hawkish for Fed policy. Also, hawkish comments from Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid undercut T-note prices when he said the Fed should hold rates at a "somewhat restrictive" level. In addition, supply pressures are bearish for T-notes as the Treasury will auction $42 billion of 10-year T-notes later today.
European government bond yields are moving lower today. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 2-month low of 2.791% and is down -0.8 bp to 2.800%. The 10-year UK gilt yield dropped to a 2-weeklow of 4.480% and is down -2.0 bp to 4.486%.
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance of a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
Strength in chip makers and AI-infrastructure stocks is supportive for the broader market. Micron Technology (MU) is up more than +6% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100, and Microchip Technology (MCHP) is up more than +4%. Also, Lam Research (LRCX), Western Digital (WDC), KLA Corp (KLAC), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), and Texas Instruments (TXN) are up more than +3%. In addition, Applied Materials (AMAT), Analog Devices (ADI), and Intel (INTC) are up more than +2%.
Software stocks are falling today and weighing on the overall market. Atlassian (TEAM) is down more than -6%, and Intuit (INTU) is down more than -5%. Also, Workday (WDAY) and Autodesk (ADSK) are down more than -4%, and Salesforce (CRM) is down more than -4% to lead losers in the Dow Jones industrials. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT), Adobe (ADBE), and Datadog (DDOG) are down more than -2%.
Teradata (TDC) is up more than +22% after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of 74 cents, better than the consensus of 56 cents, and forecasting full-year adjusted EPS of $2.55 to $2.65, stronger than the consensus of $2.50.
Vertiv Holdings (VRT) is up more than +21% after forecasting full-year net sales of $13.25 billion to $13.75 billion, well above the consensus of $12.43 billion.
Generac Holdings (GNRC) is up more than +16% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after forecasting a full-year Ebitda margin of 18% to 19%, the midpoint above the consensus of 18.1%.
Lattice Semiconductor (LSCC) is up more than +16% after forecasting Q1 revenue of $158 million to $172 million, well above the consensus of $148.1 million.
Beta Technologies (BETA) is up more than +15% after Amazon.com disclosed a 5.1% stake in the company.
GlobalFoundries (GFS) is up more than +13% after reporting Q4 net revenue of $1.83 billion, above the consensus of $1.80 billion.
Cloudflare (NET) is up more than +8% after reporting Q4 revenue of $614.5 million, better than the consensus of $591.4 million, and forecasting full-year revenue of $2.79 billion to $2,80 billion, above the consensus of $2.74 billion.
Gilead Sciences (GILD) is up more than +5% after reporting Q4 revenue of $7.93 billion, above the consensus of $7.71 billion.
AST SpaceMobile (ASTS) is up more than +2% after reporting a successful unfolding of its next-generation BlueBird 6 satellite.
Mattel (MAT) is down more than -23% after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of 39 cents, weaker than the consensus of 54 cents, and forecasting full-year adjusted EPS of $1.18 to $1.30, well below the consensus of $1.76.
Rapid7 Inc (RPD) is down more than -25% after forecasting full-year revenue of $835 million to $843 million, weaker than the consensus of $869.8 million.
Lyft (LYFT) is down more than -14% after reporting Q4 rides of 243.5 million, well below the consensus of 255.87 million.

Stocks Turn Mixed as Software Stocks Slide

Legendary investor Warren Buffett advises to be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful. One way we can try to measure the level of fear in a given stock is through a technical analysis indicator called the Relative Strength Index, or RSI, which measures momentum on a scale of zero to 100. A stock is considered to be oversold if the RSI reading falls below 30.
In trading on Wednesday, shares of Mattel Inc (Symbol: MAT) entered into oversold territory, hitting an RSI reading of 23.0, after changing hands as low as $15.05 per share. By comparison, the current RSI reading of the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) is 52.1.
