Factors Likely to Have Shaped Macy's Q4 Earnings
Macy’s fiscal fourth-quarter performance is likely to have benefited from continued traction in its Bold New Chapter strategy, particularly within the go-forward store base and digital channels. In the fiscal third quarter, comparable sales growth was driven by improvements in omnichannel execution, stronger brand curation and clearer category assortments, with management highlighting positive customer response to these changes.
The Reimagine 125 locations continued to outperform the broader fleet, reflecting better presentation, improved in-store experience and localized merchandising. Entering the holiday quarter with these operational initiatives is likely to have supported traffic, conversion and basket size in the fiscal fourth quarter.
Another important driver in the final quarter is likely to have been the Luxury banners. In the fiscal third quarter, Bloomingdale’s delivered strong comparable sales growth, benefiting from brand expansion and healthy demand across ready-to-wear, men’s apparel and fine jewelry, while Bluemercury extended its streak of comparable sales gains, supported by strength in dermatological skincare and premium beauty partnerships. If these trends carried into the holiday season, the continued differentiation of the company’s higher-end formats is likely to have helped offset softer demand in more value-oriented categories and positioned Macy’s to better capture gifting demand across a range of price points.
Operational improvements may have further aided the fiscal fourth-quarter execution. The opening of the China Grove distribution center introduced advanced automation and robotics into the supply chain, aimed at improving delivery speed, accuracy and cost efficiency. Enhanced fulfillment capabilities, combined with disciplined inventory management and a balanced mix of newness for the holiday season, likely supported better in-stock positions and reduced markdown risks.
Additionally, stabilization in the credit card portfolio and growth in applications during the fiscal third quarter pointed to healthier engagement within the company’s loyalty ecosystem, which may have provided incremental support to holiday spending.
On the flip side, several pressures likely weighed on year-over-year comparisons in the fiscal fourth quarter. Management has consistently noted the impacts of tariffs on merchandise margins, even as mitigation efforts helped reduce the headwind. Promotional intensity across the retail landscape and ongoing store closures also create top-line friction. These combined factors likely tempered revenue and earnings growth despite operational progress and strategic gains across key banners. We expect comparable sales to decline 1.6% on an owned basis and 1.5% on an owned-plus-licensed-plus-marketplace basis in the fiscal fourth quarter. We anticipate the gross margin to decline 90 basis points year over year to 34.8% in the quarter.
Macy's Valuation Picture
From a valuation standpoint, Macy's stock is currently trading at a discount compared with the Zacks Retail - Regional Department Stores industry. With a forward 12-month price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 9.23, Macy's stands far below the industry average of 13.57, suggesting that the stock may be relatively cheap at the current levels.

When compared with other retail giants, including Costco Wholesale Corporation COST, Walmart Inc. WMT and Ross Stores, Inc. ROST, the company’s valuation looks even more discounted. Costco trades at a forward P/E of 47.73, Walmart at 44.10 and Ross Stores at 28.58 — all higher than Macy's valuation multiple.

More Retail Earnings Ahead: A Closer Look
The earnings focus remains on the retail space, with several bellwether operators on deck to report results this week, including Target, Best Buy, Costco, Macy’s and others.
The earnings releases thus far provide a reassuring view of consumer spending, with broad spending trends largely stable and in line with what we have been seeing in recent quarters. That said, cumulative inflation remains a headwind, particularly at the lower end of income distribution. The stable aggregate spending trends reflect strength among high-income and younger consumer groups, with the bulk of the outlays going towards essentials and experiences.
Demand for discretionary spending categories such as big-ticket merchandise has remained soft in the post-COVID period, though recent results from Walmart show some signs of improvement. Weakness in the discretionary spending categories explains a big part of Target’s underperformance relative to Walmart and others over the past year, though Target shares are off to a great start in 2026.
As noted earlier, Target shares have done exceptionally well this year, up +15.6% and outperforming Walmart’s 15% rise and the broader market’s +0.6% gain.
Target shares were down following each of the last five quarterly releases. Still, the stock’s recent momentum suggests that market participants expect management to provide a positive outlook when they report before the market’s open on Tuesday (March 3rd).
The expectation is for Target to report $2.17 per share in earnings on $30.52 billion in revenues, representing year-over-year changes of -10% and -1.3%, respectively. Estimates had modestly inched up following the February 10th management update but have remained unchanged since then. Comps are expected to be down -2.48%, which would follow the company’s disappointing showing on this count in the preceding period, when it reported a -2.7% comp decline vs. expectations of -1.89%.
Best Buy is expected to come out with EPS of $2.48 on $13.91 billion in revenues Tuesday morning, representing year-over-year changes of -3.9% and -0.3%, respectively. With respect to same-store sales, the expectation is a +0.14% gain, following the +2.7% gain in the last quarterly release on November 25th, relative to expectations of +1.57% comp growth.
Best Buy shares were up following the November release, as the Q3 comp growth had beaten expectations in a big way. The revisions trend has been modestly negative, reflecting the relatively soft holiday sales for the electronics category. There is likely not a whole lot of downside risk in Best Buy shares at this stage, but negative surprises on the comps front will likely put more pressure on the stock.
With respect to the Retail sector’s 2025 Q4 earnings season scorecard, we now have results from 22 of the 30 retailers in the S&P 500 index. Regular readers know that Zacks has a dedicated stand-alone economic sector for the retail space, which is unlike the placement of the space in the Consumer Staples and Consumer Discretionary sectors in the Standard & Poor’s standard industry classification. The Zacks Retail sector includes not only Target, Best Buy, and other traditional retailers, but also online vendors like Amazon and restaurant players.
Total Q4 earnings for these 22 retailers that have reported are up +6.9% from the same period last year on +8.6% higher revenues, with 50% beating EPS estimates and 77.3% beating revenue estimates.
The proportion of these companies beating consensus EPS estimates is the lowest at 50% for this group of 22 retailers in the index over the preceding 5-year period. We should also note that the sector’s 50% EPS beats percentage is the lowest, along with the Auto sector, of all 16 Zacks sectors this earnings season.
With respect to the elevated earnings growth rate at this stage, we like to show the group’s performance with and without Amazon, whose results are among the 22 companies that have already reported. As we know, Amazon’s Q4 earnings were up +5.9% on +13.6% higher revenues, as it missed EPS and revenue expectations.

Through Friday, February 27th, we have seen Q4 results from 481 S&P 500 members, or 96.2% of the index’s total membership. Total earnings for these companies are up +15.1% from the same period last year on +9.4% higher revenues, with 74.8% beating EPS estimates and 73.4% beating revenue estimates.

The following three consumer discretionary or consumer staples stocks come to mind: Conagra Brands (NYSE: CAG), Macy's (NYSE: M), and Signet Jewelers (NYSE: SIG).
Conagra Brands has many potential paths to recovery
Admittedly, while Conagra Brands has rallied higher since the start of 2026, shares are still down by over 20% over the past 12 months. Blame this on the impact of inflation and changing consumer habits on demand for branded food products. Yet while macroeconomic factors may continue to negatively affect Conagra's business, management is addressing the issue.
For instance, in January Conagra launched "Project Catalyst," an AI-based initiative intended to help the company revamp its core business. Only time will tell whether "Project Catalyst" lives up to expectations.
However, catalysts such as the sale of underperforming brands and the purchasing of faster-growing brands are still on the table. Irrespective of whether AI, mergers and acquisitions, or some other catalyst sparks a rebound for Conagra, in the meantime, investors can collect the stock's high dividend. At current prices, shares have a forward yield of 7.6%.
There's more room to run for Macy's shares
Over the past six months, shares in department store operator Macy's have surged by nearly 75%. Thanks to cost-cutting, store closures, and a pivot toward selling to more affluent customers, the retailer's financials have improved substantially.
But it's not too late to capitalize on this turnaround stock. Even after its strong surge since late last year, Macy's continues to trade at a relatively low 12 times forward earnings. For comparison, other department store retailers, like Kohl's, are trading at nearly 20 times forward earnings.
That's not to say that Macy's is necessarily deserving of a 20x forward multiple. However, there may be some room for valuation expansion if it continues to exceed expectations. The recent bankruptcy of competitor Saks Global could help with this, as it shuts down many of its stores.
Based on future forecasts, Signet Jewelers is an even greater post-rally bargain
Shares in Signet, parent company of jewelry retailers such as Kay, Zales, and Jared, have surged 80% over the past year, largely thanks to successful changes implemented by CEO J.K. Symancyk.
By differentiating its retail brands and embracing lab-grown diamonds as a growth opportunity, Signet Jewelers has exceeded expectations in its most recent quarterly financial results. That said, analyst estimates call for earnings growth of just 4% for the just-completed fiscal year ending Jan. 31.
This low growth may explain Signet's still-low valuation of 8.5 times forward earnings. Even so, valuation expansion is just around the corner. For the current fiscal year, forecasts call for earnings growth of up to 19.7%. Such a growth resurgence could push Signet's valuation higher.

Investing in dividend-paying stocks has its virtues. The payments can provide a regular source of income through various economic times. But you have to dig deeper to determine if the company can sustain its payouts. If they're tenuous, that could signal woes for the firm.
Turning this analysis to individual stocks, two venerable retailers, Walmart (NASDAQ: WMT) and Macy's (NYSE: M), both pay dividends.

Which one, if any, should dividend-seeking investors consider buying?
Walmart
Most people know Walmart for its low-priced inventory of products and ubiquitous retail presence. Its Walmart and Sam's Club stores and multiple retail websites serve more than 270 million customers globally each week.
It's not just a popular shopping destination. Walmart also produces a healthy profit. Fiscal third-quarter operating profit, adjusted to remove foreign-currency translation effects, grew 8% year over year to $7.2 billion. The period ended on Oct. 31.
It produces enough profit to invest in the business and also pay a generous dividend. Walmart generated free cash flow (FCF), or operating cash flow less capital expenditures, of $8.8 billion for the prior nine months. That's well in excess of the $5.6 billion it pays out in dividends.
Certainly, Walmart can afford its dividends. The board of directors also has a history of raising them, doing so annually for more than 50 straight years, making the company a Dividend King. That's certainly quite a feat.
However, at the current dividend rate, the stock's 0.7% dividend yield is lower than the S&P 500's (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) 1.1%. That's more a reflection of the stock's strong performance over the past year. Walmart stock trades up 169% (compared to the S&P 500's 70% gain) over the past three years.
Macy's
Many people know the Macy's brand, but the company has been dealing with challenges lately. Management implemented its turnaround plan, which includes revamping and closing some Macy's stores, changing the product assortment, and focusing on its luxury brands (Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury).
There's evidence that its plan has proven effective, albeit it's in the early days. The company's fiscal third-quarter same-store sales (comps) increased 3.4%. This figure measures owned-plus-licensed-plus marketplace sales. These include online sales and sales by departments licensed to others. The quarter ended on Nov. 1.
Macy's adjusted diluted earnings per share last quarter more than doubled to $0.09 compared to $0.04 a year ago. The figure excludes certain items like impairment charges and the loss from repaying debt.
The company generated FCF of $545.7 million over the last 12 months through Nov. 1, compared to the roughly $200 million in dividends.
Macy's suspended its dividend in March 2020. Granted, these were extraordinary circumstances, since those were the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. When the board of directors reinstated the payments in September 2021, it slashed the quarterly per-share rate from $0.3775 to $0.15.
True, Macy's has raised dividends annually since then. The shares have a compelling 3.2% dividend yield.
The better dividend stock
For those looking purely for dividends, Walmart's below-market yield isn't appealing. If you're looking for an attractive total return over the long haul, the stock has merit.
Macy's isn't for risk-averse investors. The dividend yield may prove tempting, but it's important to remember that the company is in the midst of a turnaround effort. While sales results have been promising, they could prove fleeting.
Hence, dividend investors should only buy Macy's shares if they're willing to accept that payouts could get slashed should sales growth reverse.

Macy’s Inc. M is demonstrating an accelerating enterprise-wide recovery as execution of its Bold New Chapter strategy gains traction. The company’s focused approach, strengthening the core Macy’s banner, scaling luxury and modernizing operations, is translating into improving customer engagement and stronger financial performance across the portfolio.
The impacts of this execution were clearly reflected in the third-quarter fiscal 2025 results. Macy’s delivered a positive 3.2% comparable sales increase, its strongest performance in 13 quarters, while adjusted earnings exceeded internal expectations. Results benefited from better-than-anticipated sales, margin performance and cost control, signaling that the underlying fundamentals of the business are strengthening despite a cautious consumer backdrop.
Momentum at the Macy’s nameplate reflected the benefits of focused investment and improved execution. Go-Forward stores delivered positive comparable sales growth, supported by enhanced merchandising, improved store presentation and stronger omnichannel integration. The Reimagine 125 locations continued to outperform the broader fleet, demonstrating how targeted upgrades in high-potential stores are driving higher traffic, engagement and conversion.
Luxury banners also played a critical role in the recovery. Bloomingdale’s posted its strongest comparable sales growth in over three years, benefiting from exclusive brand partnerships and strong demand in key categories. Bluemercury also delivered another quarter of comparable sales growth, supported by skincare and premium beauty, reinforcing the long-term opportunity in luxury.
Operational modernization further supported Macy’s recovery. Investments in supply-chain automation, inventory discipline, and cost control improved efficiency and margins while enabling continued reinvestment in growth initiatives. Collectively, these actions highlight how disciplined execution of the Bold New Chapter strategy is accelerating Macy’s enterprise-wide recovery and strengthening its long-term competitive position.
KSS & COST Focus on Store Optimization to Drive Growth
Store optimization remains a key growth lever for Kohl’s Corporation KSS as the company upgrades its physical retail experience to boost engagement and convenience in the third quarter of fiscal 2025. Kohl’s is refining store layouts, expanding impulse checkout areas and strengthening category adjacencies to promote product discovery and increase basket size.
Enhanced visual merchandising, clearer signage and stronger in-store inspiration are creating a more seamless and consistent customer journey. These initiatives reflect a disciplined execution approach that supports traffic recovery and positions Kohl’s for more durable long-term performance.
Costco Wholesale Corporation COST continues to improve store productivity and member experience through focused operational investments. In the first quarter of fiscal 2026, Costco opened eight warehouses, bringing its global footprint to 921 locations, while relocating high-volume stores to larger formats with improved parking and expanded gas station capacity.
Costco is also deploying membership pre-scanning and digital wallet functionality, delivering checkout speed gains of up to 20% in early-adopting warehouses. Targeted remodels and expanded ancillary services are further boosting sales efficiency, with fiscal 2025 new warehouses producing approximately $192 million in annualized sales per location.
Macy’s Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates
Shares of the company have soared 53.8% in the past six months compared with the industry’s 40.8% growth.
