Macy's, Inc., an omni-channel retail organization, operates stores, websites, and mobile applications in the United States. The company sells a range of merchandise, such as apparel and accessories for men, women, and kids; cosmetics; home furnishings; and other consumer goods under the Macy's, Bloomingdale's, and bluemercury brands. It also operates in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, and Al Zahra, Kuwait under the license agreements. The company was formerly known as Federated Department Stores, Inc. and changed its name to Macy's, Inc. in June 2007. The company was founded in 1830 and is based in New York, New York.

Macy’s looks like an inexpensive but not risk-free retailer: based on valuation multiples, the company trades well below the industry median, which usually points to market skepticism rather than clear-cut undervaluation without caveats. P/E, P/S, and P/FCF are materially below industry benchmarks, supporting the idea of limited downside; however, the low valuation itself reflects weak earnings momentum and margins. P/B is also below the median, but not enough to fully offset the operating risks. On the positive side, debt/equity has declined to 0.50 and the current ratio has risen to 1.48, meaning the balance sheet has become more resilient, although the quick ratio of 0.44 still indicates reliance on working capital and inventory. ROE at 14.46% looks acceptable, ROI at 9.47% is above the median, and return on tangible equity is close to a strong level, suggesting the company still retains the ability to generate returns on capital. On the other hand, ROA is below the industry level, while the net profit margin of 2.84% and operating margin of 4.61% remain weak for sustainable valuation expansion. Absolute profitability is also underwhelming: net income and operating income are positive, but their scale and year-to-year volatility show that the recovery is still not linear. Revenue remains large and relatively stable, which supports the business model, but EBITDA and net income do not show convincing acceleration. The dividend yield has fallen to 0.78%, so the dividend factor is now weaker than before and cannot serve as the main argument for a re-rating. At the same time, net worth and equity look stable, and long-term debt has decreased, reducing financial risk. Overall, the fundamentals justify a cautious approach: the valuation looks cheap, but earnings quality and margins do not yet provide grounds for a meaningful increase in the target price. For an investor, this is a story of limited upside with a moderately solid balance sheet and rather weak operating momentum, so the forecast should be slightly reduced.

Stock indexes settled higher on Monday, with the S&P 500 posting a 2.5-week high and the Dow Jones Industrials posting a new all-time high. Strength in chipmakers, AI infrastructure stocks, and megacap technology companies lifted the overall market on Monday. Stocks also found support in Monday’s US economic news, which showed service sector activity continued to expand in June, albeit at a slower pace, as companies boosted payrolls amid easing cost pressures.

The US Jun ISM services index fell -0.5 to 54.0, right on expectations. The Jun ISM services price-paid sub-index eased to 67.7 from 71.3 in May, stronger than the 67.5 expected. The Jun ISM services employment sub-index rose +3.3 to 51.2, stronger than expectations of 48.2.
Stocks and bonds also have carryover support from last Thursday’s smaller-than-expected increase in US nonfarm payrolls, which bolstered speculation that the Fed will not raise interest rates anytime soon.
The outlook for strong Q2 earnings is a bullish factor for stocks. Forecasts compiled by Bloomberg Intelligence suggest Q2 earnings may increase by +23%, close to Q1’s blowout earnings of +30%, which was more than double the +12% analysts had expected. AI spending is expected to account for most of earnings, with AI infrastructure stocks set to contribute nearly 60% of the S&P 500's earnings-per-share growth in Q2.
WTI crude oil (CLQ26) fell -0.2% on Monday as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates ramped up shipments to nearly pre-war levels. Also, OPEC+ on Sunday agreed to add 188,000 bpd to their output target, beginning August 1, in line with plans to complete the reversal of production curbs imposed a few years ago.
The markets are discounting a 25% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on July 28-29.
Overseas stock markets settled lower on Monday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell from a new record high and closed down -0.23%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.06%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed down -0.01%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Monday closed up +2 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield fell -0.6 bp to 4.477%. Sep T-notes posted modest gains on Monday amid carryover support from last Thursday’s weaker-than-expected US June payroll report, which reduces the chances of the Fed tightening monetary policy. Lower crude oil prices on Monday were also supportive of T-note prices.
Gains in T-notes were muted on Monday after the June ISM Services index expanded as expected, with the employment sub-index climbing, a hawkish factor for Fed policy. Strength in stocks on Monday also curbed safe-haven demand for T-notes. In addition, supply pressures are weighing on T-notes, as the Treasury will auction $119 billion in T-notes and T-bonds this week, beginning with a $58 billion auction of 3-year T-notes on Tuesday.
European government bond yields moved higher on Monday. The 10-year German bund yield climbed to a 2-week high of 2.949% and finished up +1.3 bp to 2.948%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +1.1 bp to 4.793%.
Eurozone May retail sales rose +0.2% m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.3% m/m.
The Eurozone July Sentix investor confidence index rose by +10.3 to a 4-month high of -3.1, stronger than expectations of -10.0.
German May factory orders rose +1.9% m/m, stronger than expectations of +1.1% m/m.
Swaps are discounting a 3% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on July 23.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks moved higher on Monday, helping lift the overall market. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) closed up more than +2%. Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +7% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) closed up more than +6%. Also, Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed up more than +5%, and ON Semiconductor (ON) closed up more than +4%. In addition, Microchip Technology (MCHP), Analog Devices (ADI), and ASML Holding NV (ASML) closed up more than +3%, and NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed up more than +2%.
Most of the Magnificent Seven technology stocks gained on Monday, a supportive factor for the broader market. Tesla (TSLA) closed up more than +6%, and Meta Platforms (META) closed up more than +2%. Also, Alphabet (GOOGL) and Apple (AAPL) closed up more than +1%, Amazon.com (AMZN) closed up +0.61%, and Nvidia (NVDA) closed up +0.40%. However, Microsoft (MSFT) bucked the trend and closed down -0.96% after announcing that its Xbox division plans to eliminate 3,200 jobs, or 20% of its workforce, over the next year.
Cybersecurity stocks rallied on Monday, a positive factor for the overall market. Okta (OKTA) closed up more than +5%, and Fortinet (FTNT) closed up more than +3%. Also, CrowdStrike Holdings (CRWD), Palo Alto Networks (PANW), Zscaler (ZS), and Cloudflare (NET) closed up more than +2%.
Dell Technologies (DELL) closed up more than +4% after President Trump posted positive comments about the company on social media.
Axon Enterprise (AXON) closed up more than +4% after Needham & Co raised its price target on the stock to $750 from $600.
Macy’s (M) closed up more than +2% after Morgan Stanley upgraded the stock to overweight with a price target of $30.
US Bancorp (USB) closed up more than +2% after Jeffries upgraded the stock to buy from hold with a price target of $75.
ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd (ZIM) closed down more than -7% after Ynet reported that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said the proposed sale of the company is “not on the agenda.”
O’Reilly Automotive (ORLY) closed down more than -6% to lead losers in the S&P 500 following last Thursday’s report that the company was interested in acquiring Genuine Parts Co’s auto-parts segment.
Constellation Brands (STZ) closed down more than -4% after Morgan Stanley said it sees potential Q3 demand risk for beer sales following Brazil’s and Mexico’s defeat in the World Cup on Sunday.

Chip Stock Rally Boosts the Broader Market

Performance data for meme coins can be deceiving, given how they often launch at prices close to zero.
There's currently no good way to diversify across a broad mix of top meme coins.
It's easy to dismiss meme coins. Many of them started as silly internet jokes and are completely worthless. Even Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) -- the king of meme coins -- started as an internet joke more than a decade ago.
However, a handful of meme coins now rank among the most valuable cryptocurrencies on the planet, and meme coins as a whole represent 1.25% of the total value of the crypto market. So, is there any legitimate case for them as a long-term investment?

Diversification into meme coins
One potential justification for investing in meme coins is diversification. Basically, you don't want to put all your eggs in one basket, so you need to think beyond just Bitcoin or Ethereum if you're investing in crypto.
That leads some investors to consider meme coins such as Dogecoin. After all, DOGE currently has a market cap of $12.5 billion, ranking it among the top 10 cryptocurrencies. Other meme coins with substantial market caps include Shiba Inu, Pepe, and MemeCore. All rank among the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market cap.
Unfortunately, there's no easy way to diversify into a mix of meme coins. Investing in a single meme coin is still too risky, and there's no single ETF that gives you exposure to a basket of meme coins.
Personally, I'd feel a lot better if I owned an ETF that had a good mix of dog- and frog-themed coins. The best you're going to get is a single crypto ETF holding only Dogecoin, and that's simply not enough diversification for most investors.
Beware meme coin math
It's easy to fall into the trap of "meme coin math." Meme coins tend to launch at prices as close to zero as possible, skyrocket to absurd valuations, and then dramatically lose almost all of their value. They don't go all the way to zero, but they get as close as possible.
But even at these drastically lower valuations, they can look like splendid long-term investments. That could be confusing for some investors.
For example, take Dogecoin. Even though it's down a staggering 89% from its all-time high of $0.74 and currently trades for mere pennies, it might initially look like a good long-term investment. That's because it's up a head-spinning 19,000% since its launch back in 2013.
But see how the numbers can be deceiving? The only people who made money were the ones who got to the game early. In 2021, the Dogecoin market cratered. Everyone who bought in 2021 or later got caught holding the bag and is likely down big on their investment.
Memes are for the short run, not the long run
Based on this, it's hard to make the case for meme coins as a suitable long-term investment. There's no good way to get broad-based exposure to them as a stand-alone asset class.
Moreover, their long-term return data is mixed at best and downright scary at worst. For that reason, you can safely exclude meme coins from your long-term portfolio.

eBay operates a global online platform connecting buyers and sellers, while Macy's anchors its business in physical storefronts and luxury brands. They are sometimes compared because both companies are navigating a rapidly evolving consumer environment where scale and digital integration determine long-term viability in a competitive market.
The case for eBay
eBay operates a global online marketplace that bypasses the need for owned inventory, focusing instead on connecting millions of buyers and sellers. The company specializes in enthusiast categories such as motor vehicles, collectibles, and refurbished items, often utilizing partners for authentication services. As of June 2026, GameStop (NYSE:GME) has submitted a non-binding acquisition proposal at $125 per share, introducing a new layer of uncertainty regarding the company's future ownership.
eBay competes within the broader universe of retail stocks by focusing on these niche categories to drive engagement. In fiscal 2025, revenue reached nearly $11.1 billion, good for roughly 7.9% year-over-year growth. eBay generated net income of roughly $2 billion, resulting in a net margin of close to 18.3%.
As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the company maintained a debt-to-equity ratio of 1.6x. That means eBay uses $1.60 of debt for every dollar of equity owned by shareholders to fund its operations. The current ratio, which measures the ability to pay short-term debts with assets that can be converted to cash quickly, stood at 1.1x, while free cash flow reached nearly $1.7 billion for the year.
The case for Macy's
Macy's operates an omnichannel retail business through its primary namesake brand, along with the luxury-focused Bloomingdale's and beauty-centric Bluemercury. A significant portion of its financial structure is supported by a long-term commercial agreement with Citigroup (NYSE:C), which manages its credit card portfolio and involves profit-sharing on receivables. The company currently manages hundreds of locations across the United States while expanding its digital presence to reach a broader customer base.
Financial results for fiscal 2025 show that revenue was approximately $22.6 billion, a slight decline of roughly 1.7% from the prior year. Despite the dip in sales, the company generated net income of close to $642 million. This led to net margin of approximately 2.8%, reflecting the higher costs associated with maintaining a massive physical store footprint and inventory.
According to its January 2026 balance sheet, Macy's carries a debt-to-equity ratio of nearly 1.1x, suggesting a more conservative use of borrowed funds relative to its equity. Its current ratio of 1.5x means the company has $1.50 in current assets for every dollar of short-term liabilities. Free cash flow for the year was approximately $1.1 billion, providing the capital needed for its ongoing store reimagining strategy.
Risk profile comparison
eBay faces significant trial risk following the collapse of settlement negotiations in a cyberstalking lawsuit as of June 2026. The platform also contends with aggressive rivalry from AI-powered search tools and chatbots developed by companies like Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). Furthermore, changes to global trade policies, including the potential removal of tax exemptions for small cross-border packages, could increase compliance burdens and transaction costs for its international sellers.
Macy's is currently focused on its “Bold New Chapter” strategy, but any failure to successfully modernize its supply chain or reimagine stores could hinder future profitability. The company is highly sensitive to shifts in consumer spending caused by inflation and interest rate volatility. Which stock would I buy in 2026?
Macy's is a definite "no" for me. It feels like a special situation, which is outside my circle of competence. The department store retailer is a turnaround story, and those have a binary outcome: things turn around, or they don't. Put more bluntly, the company will figure things out and the stock will go up, or it won't, and it's a zero.
eBay is slightly more complicated. Whatever's happening with GameStop is sort of difficult to assess because GameStop hasn't been a rational stock (or company) for years now; launching an acquisition bid post-toilet does not especially inspire confidence, but opinions may vary here. eBay, at the very least, does not seem particularly keen, calling the offer "neither credible nor attractive."
Setting that aside, eBay's legal issues do seem concerning. What the plaintiffs allege is horrifying, and though they surely will not get as much in damages as they're requesting, it's a question mark I wouldn't like for a stock I owned.
It's a coward's way out, but truthfully, I wouldn't want to own either of these stocks.

The MemeCore (CRYPTO: M) cryptocurrency plunged this week, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. From last Friday's market close to 11 a.m. ET on June 26, the meme coin platform lost 70.8% of its total market value. After the plunge, MemeCore's market cap stands at $1.1 billion.
The price fell from $3 to $0.50 per token between 8:30 p.m. ET and 9:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday evening, highlighting the risks of thinly traded assets with limited liquidity.

Warning signs were hiding in plain sight
Crypto analysts called MemeCore a risky cryptocurrency before this sudden crash.
Most of the supply is held by a handful of insiders. The token was added to major crypto exchanges such as Kraken despite a history of suspicious insider trading. And, of course, it's hard to trust a cryptocurrency specifically designed to mint valueless meme coins. The market cap sat near $3 billion at the start of this week, but trading volume was low.
It's unclear what started the price drop on Wednesday. With minimal active bidding, it didn't take much to consume MemeCore's available market liquidity.
MemeCore is a risky bet on meme coin mania
MemeCore set out to be the go-to platform for minting meme coins, which is kind of like aspiring to be the world's finest maker of whoopee cushions. There's a market for it, sure, but it's a novelty item. This week's crash may have corrected some of that overvaluation, though at $1.1 billion, skeptics would argue there's still a long way to fall. On top of that, MemeCore adds more risk with limited trading volume, just a handful of crypto exchanges offering the token, and allegations of insider-driven market price manipulation.
If you're holding MemeCore today, I hope it's just a handful of tokens in the speculative corner of your portfolio. It's betting that meme culture and speculative crypto enthusiasm will stick around long enough for a rebound -- and that MemeCore can stave off larger, multi-talented rivals like Solana (CRYPTO: SOL) and Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH).
That's not exactly a thesis you'd want to stake your retirement on.

How the MemeCore Crypto Crashed 71% This Week

Macy’s Inc. M is strengthening its digital business as part of its Bold New Chapter strategy, using artificial intelligence, platform enhancements and faster fulfillment to improve customer engagement. The digital channel is becoming increasingly important to the retailer, with digital sales accounting for 34% of first-quarter 2026 net sales, up from 33% a year ago, underscoring consumers’ growing preference for online shopping.
The company’s digital investments are translating into stronger business performance. During the first quarter, digital contributed to positive comparable sales, helping Macy’s deliver 3% comparable sales growth, its strongest first-quarter result in four years, while go-forward comparable sales increased 3.1%. Macy’s reported 1.8% net sales growth to $4.7 billion, reflecting broad-based momentum across its omnichannel operations.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a key differentiator. Macy’s introduced Ask Macy’s, an AI-powered conversational shopping assistant designed using insights from thousands of store associates. The tool helps customers discover products across stores and digital channels, while the company continues improving its digital platform and expanding its curated online marketplace to enhance assortment, personalization and product discovery. Management said early customer response to Ask Macy’s has been favorable.
Technology is also improving operational efficiency. Macy’s reported a 4.2% increase in units processed per hour across its direct-to-consumer and store replenishment network, while order-to-ship times improved 5.7% year over year. The company believes ongoing AI initiatives will further streamline operations, enabling it to better serve customers and support employees while strengthening its omnichannel capabilities.
Macy’s continues investing in digital across its go-forward business, alongside Reimagine 200 stores and its luxury banners. These efforts, coupled with stronger customer engagement and AI-driven personalization, reinforce management’s confidence in sustained omnichannel growth and support its decision to raise full-year fiscal 2026 guidance.

Shares of Macy’s have risen 44.4% over the past three months compared with the industry’s 21.6% growth.

Sneaker giant Nike (NYSE: NKE) has been a disaster over the past few years. Sales have been dropping as it cedes market share to competitors, and increased tariffs have made it challenging to improve profitability. As a result, the stock has plummeted 68% over the past five years, and it's now 21% lower than it was a decade ago.
The company brought in a new CEO last year, and it's making some progress, though management has admitted that conditions might get worse before they get better.

Getting back in the game
Nike is still the premier athleticwear brand, with a wide lead over rivals. But no leader is immune to changing trends, and smaller companies have dug into the open holes where Nike wasn't playing its hardest game. The main culprit seems to be that Nike became too reliant on its top franchises and abandoned innovation in sport.
At the same time, it decided to cut ties with wholesalers to devote resources to its direct-to-consumer business. In hindsight, the fallout from that decision is obvious. Customers didn't see Nike products on wholesale partner shelves in stores like Dick's Sporting Goods and Macy's, and were instead introduced to smaller brands developing excellent products.
Today, Nike has made an about-face in these two areas, restarting wholesale partnerships and investing heavily in innovation. Specifically, it has changed its model and is bringing out new products, addressing the serious athlete at a faster pace.
In the 2026 fiscal third quarter (ended Feb. 28), sales were flat year over year, with a 5% increase in wholesale and a 4% decease in direct-to-consumer. It's still reeling from tariffs, and gross margin fell 1.3 percentage points from last year.
As for guidance, management is expecting sales to drop 2% to 4% in the fourth quarter and sequential improvement in gross margin, although it is expected to be lower year over year. It anticipates that all activity for its "Win Now" turnaround plan will be completed by the end of the calendar year, and for improvement in the gross margin starting in the fiscal second quarter, when year-over-year comparisons for tariff impact will no longer be relevant.
What could happen on June 30?
Nike is scheduled to provide fourth-quarter results on June 30, and the market is already expecting declining sales. If the report is better than expected, the stock will reflect that. The market will also take into account any changes in forward guidance.
Over the past year, Nike's stock has responded well to earnings only once. It gave up all of its gains with subsequent earnings reports.
That's why you can't time your investment based on one report. If you envision Nike getting back on track, now could be a good time to buy, although the stock is likely to go sideways until there's sustained progress.

Is Nike Stock a Buy Before June 30?

Berkshire Hathaway's age of Greg Abel has begun. It can't be easy to take over after Warren Buffett's 60 years of building the company into the massive powerhouse it is today and cementing his legacy as one of the greatest investors ever, but Abel is diving right in. He had pledged to concentrate the stock portfolio into fewer high-conviction holdings, and he cut out about 16 small positions in his first quarter as CEO.
He did, however, also buy three new stocks, including department store retailer Macy's (NYSE: M). Macy's has been a public company for more than 30 years, and this is the first time Berkshire Hathaway has bought its stock. The retailer has been distressed as shopping habits change, and the stock trades at a P/E ratio of only 10. That's cheap, but is it a great value?

What went wrong, and what's going right
Macy's is still a major retailer, but it's gone through a transformation as trends move away from large and clunky department stores, which is Macy's bread and butter. It has closed hundreds of stores and redesigned others, and it's investing in its e-commerce channels.
The company owns three brands: Macy's, Bloomingdale's, and Bluemercury, and the latter two have been pulling more of the weight. In the 2026 first quarter (ended May 2), total comparable sales (comps) increased 3% over last year, its best showing in four quarters. The breakdown was Macy's comps up 1.6%, Bloomingdale's comps up 10.2%, and Bluemercury comps up 6.4%.
The Bloomingdale's performance was particularly excellent, with its highest first-quarter comps ever. That implies momentum, especially in the face of stubborn inflation. It's a luxury retailer, and not only is its target customer still shopping, they're choosing to do so at its stores.
Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) were $0.13, ahead of guidance and up from $0.11 last year.
Is Macy's stock a bargain?
If Abel is like his predecessor, he'll be looking for great businesses with strong management, a moat, and a fair value. With the goal of holding a stock forever, Berkshire Hathaway's management would be looking for a company that can create shareholder value over many years, not a quick turnaround story.
Does Macy's fit that? Its moat would be its strong brand, which still commands popularity and presence. With the smaller footprint, it can begin to operate more efficiently and profitably.
Buffett also loves companies that pay dividends, and Macy's dividend yields a high 3% at the current price.
I do think Macy's looks like a bargain right now, and it certainly looks like a good buy for passive income investors.

Investors who have not looked at Berkshire Hathaway lately may be surprised to see Macy's (NYSE: M) listed as one of its holdings. Berkshire took an interest in the retailer at a time when it struggled with high overhead, lower mall traffic, and declining sales.
Nonetheless, Berkshire's management team has added shares while the investment giant has been a net seller of stocks. This is likely because the retail stock is "absurdly cheap," and the reasons go well beyond a low price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio.

The Macy's purchase
Although Greg Abel now runs Berkshire, the buy looks like something out of the playbook of his predecessor, Warren Buffett. Indeed, Buffett's teasing about a "tiny investment" he made in March suggested he had a hand in this purchase.
As previously implied, its P/E ratio of 10, which had fallen as low as 7.5 during the first quarter of 2026, makes it a bargain on the surface and may have played a role in attracting Berkshire's interest.
However, Macy's' financial position may also contribute to its low valuation. It operates with some success as a mid-tier to upscale retailer at a time when peers such as JCPenney and Neiman Marcus have declared bankruptcy. Another competitor, Kohl's, has experienced years of sales declines.
In comparison, other types of stores have prospered. Retailers such as Walmart and Costco trade at more than 40 times earnings. Also, Target, which has faced challenges of its own in recent years, trades at an 18 P/E ratio.
Knowing that, Macy's is an unequivocal bargain.
Looking beyond the P/E ratio
Also, investors who look beyond the earnings multiple may perceive it as a bargain in other respects.
One reason is a recovery in sales growth. After declining in 2025, Macy's had its strongest Q1 in four years. Its net sales rose in the first quarter of fiscal 2026 (ended May 2) and raised its net sales guidance for the fiscal year. As a result, its comparable sales for fiscal 2026, which it previously expected to be flat at the midpoint, are now expected to rise between 0.5% and 1.2%.
Moreover, unlike many of its competitors, Macy's owns much of its real estate. Thor Equities and Barington Capital estimate that Macy's holds up to $9 billion in real estate holdings. Since its market cap is around $6.7 billion, investors can buy its asset base at a considerable discount if the estimate is accurate.
Additionally, it pays a yearly dividend of almost $0.77 per share, a yield of about 3%, far above the 1% average for the S&P 500. (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC). It also can likely sustain this dividend as it recently increased the payout by 5%. Even after the increase, the payout cost Macy's $196 million over the trailing 12 months, a small percentage of the more than $1.4 billion in free cash flow the company generated during the same period.
Admittedly, even with the recent increase, the payout remains below the $1.51-per-share annual payout it maintained before the pandemic. Nonetheless, the dividend pays investors to wait for a recovery, which appears increasingly likely amid the renewed sales growth.
Berkshire Hathaway and Macy's stock
If one wants an inexpensive, overlooked stock likely backed by Warren Buffett himself, they should probably look no further than Macy's stock. The company has struggled amid changing consumer tastes and evolving shopping patterns. However, the stock is cheap because the selling has gone so far that the company's market cap has likely fallen below the intrinsic value of its real estate.
Moreover, Macy's appears to have found its footing as sales growth has turned positive. With a dividend yield that exceeds 3% and a payout on the rise, Macy's looks like an increasingly attractive dividend stock.
Ultimately, as growth returns, the stock could better reflect the company's intrinsic value, making Macy's an excellent growth and income stock.

This Overlooked Warren Buffett Stock Is Absurdly Cheap Right Now

Macy's, Inc. M is no longer just a department-store turnaround story. Its latest progress is tied to retail trends that could shape the business beyond one quarter.
Luxury demand, omnichannel selling, artificial intelligence tools and supply-chain upgrades are becoming more central to the company’s strategy. The question is whether these initiatives can improve execution enough to offset cost pressure and uneven discretionary demand.
Macy’s Luxury Mix Is Becoming More Important
Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury are giving Macy’s a higher-quality mix as the core department-store channel remains less consistent. Bloomingdale’s posted 10.2% comparable sales growth in the first quarter of 2026 and recorded its highest first-quarter sales volume in 154 years.
Bluemercury added 6.4% comparable sales growth, led by makeup, dermatological skincare and fragrances. New and remodeled Bluemercury stores continued to outperform, giving Macy’s another premium banner that can support resilience when lower-income customers turn more selective.

M Omnichannel Keeps Gaining Share
Digital sales represented 34% of net sales in the first quarter, up from 33% a year earlier. That matters because Macy’s go-forward model is built around stores and digital working together, rather than treating e-commerce as a separate channel.
Store initiatives are also reinforcing the online experience. Reimagine locations helped the Macy’s nameplate generate 1.6% comparable sales growth, while digital contributed to the positive comparable sales result. This makes omnichannel execution a structural part of the turnaround.
Macy’s AI Push Moves Into Daily Retail
Macy’s AI efforts are focused on practical retail tasks. The company is using AI-related work in inventory forecasting and management, areas that can affect in-stock levels, replenishment and customer satisfaction.
Ask Macy’s, an AI-powered conversational shopping assistant, is another example. The tool is meant to support discovery across channels and reduce friction in the shopping journey, which is more useful than a broad technology claim without a clear customer purpose.
M Supply Chain Upgrades Could Add Leverage
Supply-chain modernization is another part of the trend story. Macy’s China Grove distribution facility is ramping up, with automation delivering early benefits in service levels and cost efficiencies.
The company is also building additional capacity ahead of the holiday period. Better order flow and fulfillment can support the digital channel, improve customer experience and help control costs as the company continues investing in its go-forward store base.

Macy’s Trend Story Still Faces Pressure
The trend case does not remove the financial constraints. Tariffs reduced first-quarter gross margin by about 30 basis points, and second-quarter guidance assumes tariffs and fuel costs will create a 20- to 40-basis-point gross margin headwind.
Consumer demand is another limit. Lower-income cohorts remain more choosy, while big-ticket home, especially furniture, was soft in the quarter. Amazon.com, Inc. AMZN remains a key benchmark in digital convenience, while Walmart Inc. WMT is a scale-driven omnichannel retailer that keeps pricing and fulfillment expectations high across retail.
What Macy’s Signals Say About the Trend Trade
Macy’s has credible exposure to attractive retail themes, especially luxury, AI-enabled selling and omnichannel shopping. Still, these trends need to translate into durable sales growth and margin protection before the stock earns a stronger trend-driven case.
The stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), which fits a balanced view rather than a high-conviction call.
