Year to date, shares in department store retailer Macy's (NYSE: M) have performed strongly, surging by nearly one-third. Compare this to the performance of the S&P 500 index, which is up by around 15% over the same time frame.
However, while Macy's has outperformed, it continues to trade at a discount to its closest public peers. There is a strong rationale behind this, but at the same time, this could work to your advantage.

Why? With the stock still undervalued, shares may have considerable room to run, especially over the next few years.
Why Macy's remains at a discounted valuation
At current prices, the famed department store retailer trades for around 12.5 times forward earnings. For comparison, Kohl's Corporation (NYSE: KSS) trades for more than 20 times forward earnings, and Dillard's (NYSE: DDS) trades for nearly 34 times forward earnings.
Yes, to some extent, this is an apples-to-oranges comparison. After all, investors expect both of the competitors to experience an earnings rebound in the coming fiscal year ending January 2027.
Still, even adjusting for this, Macy's still appears very undervalued. Sell-side analysts estimate Kohl's will report earnings per share (EPS) of $1.23 in 2027. Dillard's earnings the year after next could come in at $27.92 per share.
Forecasts for Macy's call for earnings of $2.21 per share in 2027. Hence, Kohl's currently trades for around 17.5 times its estimated 2027 earnings, Dillard's trades for 22.5 times its estimated 2027 earnings, but Macy's trades for just 10.1 times its estimated 2027 earnings.
How this may work to your advantage
Yes, there's a substantive reason behind Wall Street's discounting of Macy's. In December, when the company last released quarterly earnings, it also provided guidance for Q4 FY2026, which covers the holiday shopping season.
While revenue guidance of $7.35 billion to $7.5 billion came in slightly ahead of analyst forecasts, which called for $7.3 billion in sales, EPS guidance of $1.35 to $1.55 fell below forecasts, which called for EPS of $1.58.
While not certain, Wall Street may be expecting even worse results when Macy's reports them in February. However, despite slackening consumer demand, who's to say this means poor results during the holiday quarter?
As middle-to-upper income consumers, Macy's bread-and-butter customers have been weathering the recent macroeconomic storm much better than their middle-class counterparts; the opposite may take shape. That is, Macy's could post holiday season results that are better than feared, while Kohl's and Dillard's fall short of expectations.
The bottom line
Better-than-expected or unexpectedly positive results could propel Macy's shares to higher prices a few months from now. As seen from the current valuation gap, there is much room for valuation expansion.
On a longer time frame, other factors may have a significant impact on this retailer's stock price. Namely, the company's ongoing "Bold New Chapter" turnaround plan, which has entailed closing underperforming stores, as well as improving the customer experience and merchandise mix.
Trading in the low $20s per share recently, Macy's stock has in the past traded at prices north of $30. If current trends continue, this past high-water mark may arrive sooner than you think.

New Strong Buy Stocks for December 29th

Investors in Macy's Inc (Symbol: M) saw new options begin trading today, for the February 2026 expiration. At Stock Options Channel, our YieldBoost formula has looked up and down the M options chain for the new February 2026 contracts and identified one put and one call contract of particular interest.
The put contract at the $21.50 strike price has a current bid of 50 cents. If an investor was to sell-to-open that put contract, they are committing to purchase the stock at $21.50, but will also collect the premium, putting the cost basis of the shares at $21.00 (before broker commissions). To an investor already interested in purchasing shares of M, that could represent an attractive alternative to paying $22.30/share today.
Because the $21.50 strike represents an approximate 4% discount to the current trading price of the stock (in other words it is out-of-the-money by that percentage), there is also the possibility that the put contract would expire worthless. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 60%. Should the contract expire worthless, the premium would represent a 2.33% return on the cash commitment, or 19.29% annualized — at Stock Options Channel we call this the YieldBoost.

Turning to the calls side of the option chain, the call contract at the $23.00 strike price has a current bid of 50 cents. If an investor was to purchase shares of M stock at the current price level of $22.30/share, and then sell-to-open that call contract as a "covered call," they are committing to sell the stock at $23.00. Considering the call seller will also collect the premium, that would drive a total return (excluding dividends, if any) of 5.38% if the stock gets called away at the February 2026 expiration (before broker commissions). Of course, a lot of upside could potentially be left on the table if M shares really soar, which is why looking at the trailing twelve month trading history for Macy's Inc, as well as studying the business fundamentals becomes important. Considering the fact that the $23.00 strike represents an approximate 3% premium to the current trading price of the stock (in other words it is out-of-the-money by that percentage), there is also the possibility that the covered call contract would expire worthless, in which case the investor would keep both their shares of stock and the premium collected. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 51%. Should the covered call contract expire worthless, the premium would represent a 2.24% boost of extra return to the investor, or 18.60% annualized, which we refer to as the YieldBoost.
The implied volatility in the put contract example is 67%, while the implied volatility in the call contract example is 69%.

With the holiday season upon us, many people think of Macy's (NYSE: M), known for its televised Thanksgiving Day parade and renowned holiday window displays. From an investor's standpoint, there are key things to consider when looking at the past year and evaluating key issues for 2026.
This time of the year is also a good time for investors to review the retailer's performance. Once you do that, you can look at the key things to look for in 2026.

Here's a look back to see what happened with Macy's over the past year, and what to look for in the year ahead.
A 2025 review
Macy's shareholders have good reason to celebrate this year, with the stock performing very well this year. The price gained 36.3% through Dec. 16, easily outpacing the S&P 500's (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) 14.8%.
Macy's shareholders and those investing passively in the S&P 500 also receive dividends. They also factor into the total return. Adding those payouts, Macy's stock produced a total return of 43.3%, outperforming the S&P 500 by 27.6 percentage points.
It's challenging to decipher Macy's sales, since there have been store closings. The best measure to compare is same-store sales (comps). Management presents this in a couple of ways, but I like the owned-plus-licensed-plus marketplace measure, which includes online sales and sales by departments licensed to others.
On this basis, Macy's comp growth has improved this year, including a 3.2% gain in the fiscal third quarter. This increase fell in the period that ended on Nov. 1.
What to watch in 2026
Management has been executing its turnaround plan, which involves closing underperforming locations, revamping stores, and improving customer service. There's also an effort to sell more to upper-income consumers, including at its Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury brands.
Fortunately for Macy's, while lower- and middle-income consumers have been struggling with high overall prices, those at the higher end have been doing well. One thing to watch is whether this continues.
A slowdown in housing price gains and a pullback in the stock market would be a good indicator of sluggishness in this group, since these have helped this demographic. You can also look at comps at the Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury brands. The former has been doing particularly well, including a 9% increase in the latest quarter.
You should also watch other macroeconomic statistics. These include unemployment, consumer confidence, and the Consumer Price Index. Remember, Macy's is trying to appeal to a higher-income consumer.
However, if these statistics worsen dramatically, it could indicate that high earners are being affected and will slow down discretionary spending on expensive items. After all, they're not immune to the economic cycle.

Macy's: A Year in Review and a Look Ahead

For good reason, crypto investors are focused on the struggles of Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) and Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH). Both are down more than 30% this year from their highs just a few months ago.
The good news is that there are still nearly a dozen top cryptocurrencies that have managed to beat the market in 2025. Some of them All of them are up as much as 20%, or in some cases more.

But are any of them worth buying in 2026? Let's take a closer look.
Which cryptos beat the market in 2025?
When crypto investors talk about beating the market, they are usually talking about beating Bitcoin. That's because, for more than a decade, Bitcoin has been the market bellwether. As Bitcoin goes, so goes the crypto market. More than 15 years after launching, Bitcoin still accounts for almost 60% of the total market cap of the crypto industry.
Since Bitcoin is down 9% for the year, beating the market is really simple to calculate. All it requires is for a cryptocurrency to be in the green for the year.
If you peruse the list of the top 15 cryptocurrencies by market cap, a few names stand out -- all were up significantly until a recent retreat. BNB (CRYPTO: BNB) is up 20% for the year. Tron (CRYPTO: TRX) is up 9% for the year. Bitcoin Cash (CRYPTO: BCH) is up 16% for the year. And Hyperliquid (CRYPTO: HYPE) is up 5% for the year.
If you're willing to explore deeper down the list of top cryptocurrencies, there are two turbocharged standouts. Aster (CRYPTO: ASTER) is up 1,000% for the year, while MemeCore (CRYPTO: M) is up 2,500% for the year.
Which cryptos are worth buying in 2026?
Interestingly, investor favorites such as Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH), XRP (CRYPTO: XRP), and Solana (CRYPTO: SOL) are not on the list of top performers. That sets up an interesting conundrum for investors: Should you stick to the top names favored by large institutional investors, or should you dive head-first into the pool of riskier and more speculative names?
The answer for me is obvious: Stick to the proven winners and ignore this year's outliers. For just about any top performer in 2025, there's a more established cryptocurrency or crypto stock that makes for a better long-term investment.
For example, Tron may be an intriguing Layer-1 blockchain with a growing presence when it comes to stablecoins. But I'd much rather invest in Layer-1 blockchain rivals Ethereum or Solana.
Bitcoin Cash may be turning heads with its performance this year, but I'd much rather be holding Bitcoin.
Tether Gold (CRYPTO: XAUT) may be up 64% this year, and PAX Gold (CRYPTO: PAXG) may be up 65% this year, but I'd much rather be holding gold. Why go to all the trouble of investing in a crypto version of gold when you can just buy physical gold via an exchange-traded fund (ETF)? The iShares Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: IAU) is up 64% this year.
Two cryptocurrencies to put on your watch list
The only two exceptions among the winners of 2025 might be Hyperliquid and Aster. Both have exploded in popularity this year, due to their ability to offer trading in crypto perpetual futures (perps) to non-U.S. customers via a decentralized exchange platform.
But here's the thing: Centralized cryptocurrency exchanges such as Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN) have already experimented with offering perps to offshore customers, and are now working on similar products for U.S. customers.
If the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) ever approves perps for U.S. investors as part of a broader pro-crypto agenda under the Trump administration, then it's easy to see how a lot of the froth and speculation around Hyperliquid and Aster might disappear in 2026. The smartest investment might end up being Coinbase, which is up 2% this year.
At the end of the day, I don't really see anything that I like among the big winners of 2025. It might sound boring, but I'm willing to stick with Bitcoin, Ethereum, Coinbase, and gold right now. Over the long haul, I expect that they will vastly outperform all the new upstarts from this year.

As the name implies, Madison Square Garden Sports owns the NBA’s New York Knicks and the NHL franchise in NYC, the New York Rangers, both of which play in the famed Madison Square Garden Arena.
BARINGTON also buys this stock as the company faces a notable struggle. In the first quarter of fiscal 2026 (ended Sept. 30), revenue fell by 26% yearly to $39 million amid lower league distributions.
