Top 4 Women-Run Companies Delivering Market-Beating Returns

Key Points
Costco increased quarterly revenue while many other retailers' revenue declined.
E-commerce is an increasingly important part of Costco's growth plan.
The company has cut back on stocking holiday discretionary items this year.
Bulk retailer Costco (NASDAQ: COST) released slightly better-than-expected quarterly earnings results on Thursday, but the market wasn't impressed, sending shares 2% lower during Friday's trading session.
That in itself was a bit of a surprise, and analysts were left searching for an explanation. But some of the bigger surprises in the report were found outside of the results themselves.

Here are three of the most surprising details from the warehouse retailer's earnings report.
1. Costco bucked the retail trend
Unlike many other general merchandise retailers, Costco saw increases in both revenue and net income during the quarter. That put it in stark contrast to much of the rest of the retail landscape, including Target and Macy's, both of which posted year-over-year declines in revenue and net income in their comparable quarters.
This is consistent with a pullback in consumer discretionary spending. Because Costco sells its products at very slim margins, making the bulk of its profits from membership fees, it's seen as an attractive option for bargain-conscious customers.
And the company's 8% sales increase to $86.2 billion bested the revenue increases of other discount retailers like Walmart and Dollar General, which both grew revenue by about 5% in their comparable quarters. Costco's gain represented a slight upside surprise to analysts, who were predicting $86 billion in sales for the quarter.
2. It's not all about the warehouses anymore
Costco is famous for its cavernous physical warehouses, but its better-than-expected sales were fueled by a 13.6% year-over-year rise in quarterly e-commerce revenue.
For its full fiscal year (ended on Aug. 31), e-commerce sales rose 15% to $19.6 billion, or 7% of net sales. Traffic to its e-commerce site was up 27%, indicating that the company's efforts to build out its digital infrastructure were bearing fruit. It now offers same-day delivery of many items via Instacart, Uber Eats, and DoorDash, as well as scheduled delivery of larger items by Costco Logistics, including free haul-away of old items like appliances or furniture.
Management credits these e-commerce investments for growth in younger members. According to chief financial officer Gary Millerchip on theearnings call nearly half of new memberships are coming from people under the age of 40. Although that's "a net positive," according to Millerchip, it does have a notable drawback: Online members are slightly less likely to renew, so management is anticipating that small declines in its renewal rates will continue as online memberships grow.
3. A different holiday mix
At Costco, the holiday shopping season has essentially already begun: Christmas trees, decorations, and gift wrap have already shown up in warehouses and online. However, CEO Ron Vachris warned that the company's holiday offerings would look a bit different this year:
Our [product] buyers, when we were booking for this holiday season, really had to evaluate all the discretionary items, the toys and the trim and the decorations and those kind of things, and made decisions based on the necessities and what they felt needed to be in Christmas trees. We really thinned down that whole category, and we thinned down a lot of the additional seasonal areas as well. What that provided us was the opportunity to bring in ... high ticket goods that are very relevant to the time of year, but not reflective of the traditional Costco set. [For example,] we normally didn't do any furniture that time of year [due to space limitations], but it has great opportunities for top-line sales. I feel really good about the way the buyers have pivoted on the discretionary items.
This will certainly come as a surprise to shoppers, who are used to seeing multiple sizes and styles of Christmas trees, and plenty of other Christmas decorations and toys in their local Costco warehouse.
However, all of these are discretionary purchases. By signaling that it has already "thinned down" its stock of such items, replacing them with larger "high ticket goods," Costco is sending a clear signal that it doesn't expect broad discretionary spending to rebound this year.
All in all, its quarter was free from major surprises, and the company continues to outperform in every way except share price appreciation. Its stock is essentially flat for the year, lagging the S&P 500 by more than 13 percentage points:
However, if consumers do pull back further on discretionary spending, Costco is better positioned than most retailers to retain its value. It's definitely worth keeping on your radar screen.

A stock’s price-to-sales ratio reflects how much investors pay for each dollar of revenue generated by a company.
If the price-to-sales ratio is 1, investors are paying $1 for every $1 of revenues generated by the company. A stock with a price-to-sales ratio below 1 is a good bargain, as investors need to pay less than a dollar for a dollar’s worth.
Thus, a stock with a lower price-to-sales ratio is a more suitable investment than a stock with a high price-to-sales ratio.
The price-to-sales ratio is often preferred over price-to-earnings, as companies can manipulate their earnings using various accounting measures. However, sales are harder to manipulate and are relatively reliable.
However, one should keep in mind that a company with high debt and a low price-to-sales ratio is not an ideal choice. The high debt level will have to be paid off at some point, leading to further share issuance, a rise in market cap and a higher price-to-sales ratio.
In any case, the price-to-sales ratio used in isolation cannot do the trick. One should analyze other ratios like Price/Earnings, Price/Book and Debt/Equity before arriving at any investment decision.

Price to Sales less than the Median Price to Sales for its Industry: The lower the price-to-sales ratio, the better.

Price to Book (Common Equity) less than the Median Price to Book for its Industry: This is another parameter to ensure the value feature of a stock.
Debt to Equity (Most Recent) less than the Median Debt to Equity for its Industry: A company with less debt should have a stable price-to-sales ratio.
Current Price greater than or equal to $5: The stocks must be trading at a minimum of $5 or higher.
Zacks Rank less than or equal to #2 (Buy): Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) or #2 stocks are known to outperform, irrespective of the market environment.
Value Score less than or equal to B: Our research shows that stocks with a Value Score of A or B, when combined with a Zacks Rank #1 or 2, offer the best opportunities in the value investing space.

5 Low Price-to-Sales Ratio Stocks Offering Attractive Entry Points

Investors in Macy's Inc (Symbol: M) saw new options become available today, for the November 7th expiration. At Stock Options Channel, our YieldBoost formula has looked up and down the M options chain for the new November 7th contracts and identified one put and one call contract of particular interest.
The put contract at the $17.00 strike price has a current bid of 13 cents. If an investor was to sell-to-open that put contract, they are committing to purchase the stock at $17.00, but will also collect the premium, putting the cost basis of the shares at $16.87 (before broker commissions). To an investor already interested in purchasing shares of M, that could represent an attractive alternative to paying $17.11/share today.
Because the $17.00 strike represents an approximate 1% discount to the current trading price of the stock (in other words it is out-of-the-money by that percentage), there is also the possibility that the put contract would expire worthless. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 55%. Should the contract expire worthless, the premium would represent a 0.76% return on the cash commitment, or 6.48% annualized — at Stock Options Channel we call this the YieldBoost.

Turning to the calls side of the option chain, the call contract at the $18.00 strike price has a current bid of 38 cents. If an investor was to purchase shares of M stock at the current price level of $17.11/share, and then sell-to-open that call contract as a "covered call," they are committing to sell the stock at $18.00. Considering the call seller will also collect the premium, that would drive a total return (excluding dividends, if any) of 7.42% if the stock gets called away at the November 7th expiration (before broker commissions). Of course, a lot of upside could potentially be left on the table if M shares really soar, which is why looking at the trailing twelve month trading history for Macy's Inc, as well as studying the business fundamentals becomes important. Considering the fact that the $18.00 strike represents an approximate 5% premium to the current trading price of the stock (in other words it is out-of-the-money by that percentage), there is also the possibility that the covered call contract would expire worthless, in which case the investor would keep both their shares of stock and the premium collected. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 54%. Should the covered call contract expire worthless, the premium would represent a 2.22% boost of extra return to the investor, or 18.83% annualized, which we refer to as the YieldBoost.
The implied volatility in the put contract example is 62%, while the implied volatility in the call contract example is 74%.

Target Launches Record-Breaking Deals for Fall and Holiday Shoppers

The market got another high-profile contender when buy-now, pay-later company Klarna (NYSE: KLAR) finally landed on the stock market this week. The financial giant's IPO had been highly anticipated for years, and it closed 15% higher than its IPO price of $40 on the first day of trading. Let's see what Klarna is all about and whether or not it's worth investing in right now.

More than buy now, pay later
Buy now, pay later has become a well-known phrase in shopping, but Klarna likes to think of its business as "flexible payment options." It does indeed offer buy now, pay later options, but it has a full banking license and offers credit cards as well, and part of its business is artificial intelligence-based data insights for customers and merchants.
There are several players in this field at this point. The other two large ones are Afterpay, which has been acquired by fintech company Block, and Affirm Holdings, and PayPal Holdings has its own services as well. All of these businesses are similar, but they do have some differentiated features, and they work with different merchant clients.
Sweden-based Klarna has built up a long and impressive list of top brands that it partners with, including names like Disney, Macy's, Uber, and Adidas, and it just announced an agreement with Gap.
It works with 790,000 merchants globally, and it also partners with a large assortment of tech partners like Shopify, Adyen, and Stripe for easy integration into any payments system.
One of Klarna's main features is that it doesn't charge interest on small loans paid within 30 days. It does charge late fees, though, and it charges interest on larger purchases paid down over longer periods. Management also touts its AI-driven services that help customers manage their payments and budget, and it offers cashback on its credit cards. Klarna partnered with AI credit evaluation company Pagaya Technologies earlier this year to expand responsibly underwritten credit to more consumers.
Management sees its difference in its underwriting capabilities. Its average client balance over the trailing 12 months was $80, in contrast to $6,730 in credit card debt for the average U.S. customer, and its average loan duration was 40 days, which means it can quickly move as credit trends shift. Its provision for credit losses was 0.52% of gross merchandise volume (GMV) over the trailing 12 months, while loan losses as a share of total loans were 2.92% for commercial U.S. banks in 2024.
Driving innovation in finance
Klarna is already a large and prominent company, and as a result, it's not demonstrating the kind of mind-blowing growth that IPO investors often like to see. Revenue increased 19% year over year to $3 billion for the trailing 12 months ended June 30, and GMV was up 15% at $112 billion. It isn't profitable, and it reported a $225 million operating loss and a $100 million net loss.
It serves 111 million customers in its 26 global markets, including 26 million new customers from a recent acquisition. It expects to see meaningful growth from a recent deal with Walmart, and it's getting ready to launch new deals with Nexi, Worldpay, and JPMorgan Chase's J.P. Morgan Payments, which will add $5 trillion in total annual transaction volume.
Management sees a serviceable addressable market of $520 billion in payments revenue based on its take rate and the $19 trillion in consumer retail and travel spending over the trailing 12 months. That spending metric is expected to increase to $35 trillion by 2027, excluding China, which provides organic growth opportunities. It expects to launch in new markets, and it also generates advertising revenue from its merchant partners on its finance app. Ad revenue was $184 million for the trailing 12 months ended June 30. Finally, with its banking charter and spirit of innovation, it sees many ways to monetize its platform down the line.
Buy now or buy later?
Klarna is an exciting company with many long-term opportunities, but its stock is already falling from the first-day closing price. It has a $16 billion market cap and a price-to-sales ratio of 5, which isn't terribly expensive.
It isn't profitable, but it was for the first 14 years of operation. It's been taking a lot of capital to expand globally, which is hitting the bottom line. It's done this profitably before, which is a vote of confidence that it can do it again. At the same time, this bigger company is a different beast, and it takes a different set of skills to build to scale.
Klarna is a well-run company with a bright future, and it doesn't look expensive today. However, it still has a lot to prove as a public company. In general, it's prudent to watch and wait with IPO stocks.

Klarna Stock IPO Soars. Here's Everything You Need to Know.

Investors in Macy's Inc (Symbol: M) saw new options begin trading today, for the October 31st expiration. At Stock Options Channel, our YieldBoost formula has looked up and down the M options chain for the new October 31st contracts and identified one put and one call contract of particular interest.
The put contract at the $16.00 strike price has a current bid of 40 cents. If an investor was to sell-to-open that put contract, they are committing to purchase the stock at $16.00, but will also collect the premium, putting the cost basis of the shares at $15.60 (before broker commissions). To an investor already interested in purchasing shares of M, that could represent an attractive alternative to paying $17.37/share today.
Because the $16.00 strike represents an approximate 8% discount to the current trading price of the stock (in other words it is out-of-the-money by that percentage), there is also the possibility that the put contract would expire worthless. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 67%. Turning to the calls side of the option chain, the call contract at the $17.50 strike price has a current bid of 83 cents. If an investor was to purchase shares of M stock at the current price level of $17.37/share, and then sell-to-open that call contract as a "covered call," they are committing to sell the stock at $17.50. Considering the call seller will also collect the premium, that would drive a total return (excluding dividends, if any) of 5.53% if the stock gets called away at the October 31st expiration (before broker commissions). Of course, a lot of upside could potentially be left on the table if M shares really soar, which is why looking at the trailing twelve month trading history for Macy's Inc, as well as studying the business fundamentals becomes important. Considering the fact that the $17.50 strike represents an approximate 1% premium to the current trading price of the stock (in other words it is out-of-the-money by that percentage), there is also the possibility that the covered call contract would expire worthless, in which case the investor would keep both their shares of stock and the premium collected. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 47%. Should the covered call contract expire worthless, the premium would represent a 4.78% boost of extra return to the investor, or 34.88% annualized, which we refer to as the YieldBoost.
