Exxon Mobil Corporation XOM, the U.S. oil and gas major, recently announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Gabonese government to explore deepwater and ultra-deepwater areas for potential oil and gas reserves. The company has only disclosed the signing of the MoU, without providing additional details about the agreement.
The MoU signifies the U.S. energy company’s increasing footprint in Africa. ExxonMobil already has a presence in several countries in Africa, including Nigeria, Mozambique and Angola. XOM was previously active in Gabon as well. In 2006, the company made a hydrocarbon discovery in collaboration with Chevron Corporation in Gabon. However, at present, it does not hold any exploratory acreage in the country.
Gabon is currently struggling with declining production levels, and the government is actively trying to reverse this trend. Per S&P Global Commodity Insights, the country’s crude production has reportedly decreased from its peak levels of 370,000 barrels per day (bbl/d) in 1997 to 240,000 bbl/day in August 2025. The MoU signed with the government of Gabon indicates the possible return of ExxonMobil to this country, focusing on the discovery of new resources to aid Gabon's crude production goals.
On a different note, ExxonMobil is due to release its third-quarter results on Oct. 31, 2025, before market open.

XOM Signs MoU With Gabon to Explore Offshore Oil and Gas Prospects

Baker Hughes Company BKR reported third-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings of 68 cents per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 61 cents. The bottom line also improved from the year-ago level of 67 cents.
Total quarterly revenues of $7,010 million beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $6,832 million. The top line also increased from the year-ago quarter’s $6,908 million.
The strong quarterly results were primarily driven by solid performance from BKR’s Industrial & Energy Technology business segment.

Baker Hughes was reorganized from four to two operating segments — Oilfield Services and Equipment, and Industrial and Energy Technology. The segments became operational on Oct. 1, 2022.
Revenues from the Oilfield Services and Equipment (“OFSE”) unit amounted to $3,636 million, down 8% from the year-ago figure of $3,963 million. The reported figure was above our estimate of $3,632 million.
Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation & Amortization (EBITDA) from the segment totaled $671 million, down 12% from $765 million in the third quarter of 2024. This was due to overall lower volume, inflation and shifts in the business mix. This was partially mitigated by structural cost-out initiatives and overall productivity improvements.
Revenues from the Industrial & Energy Technology (“IET”) unit amounted to $3,374 million, up 15% from the year-ago quarter’s $2,945 million. The reported figure beat our estimate of $3,182.6 million.
EBITDA from the segment totaled $635 million, up 20% from the year-ago quarter’s $528 million, driven by volume, positive pricing and favorable foreign exchange rate (FX) movements, partially offset by inflation and lower cost productivity.
Costs and Expenses
Baker Hughes recorded total costs and expenses of $6,189 million in the third quarter, higher than the year-ago figure of $5,899 million. Our projection for the same was $6,054.4 million.
Orders
Orders from all business segments amounted to $8,207 million, up 23% from $6,676 million recorded a year ago. We expected the figure to be $6,619.2 million. The increase was driven by strong order intake growth across both OFSE and IET business segments.
Free Cash Flow
Baker Hughes generated a free cash flow of $699 million compared with $754 million a year ago.
Capex & Balance Sheet
BKR’s net capital expenditure in the second quarter was $230 million.
As of Sept. 30, 2025, it had cash and cash equivalents of $2,693 million. BKR had a long-term debt of $5,988 million at the end of the reported quarter, with a debt-to-capitalization of 24.8%.

Baker Hughes Q3 Earnings & Revenues Surpass Estimates, Increase Y/Y

Valero Energy Corporation VLO reported third-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings of $3.66 per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.95. The bottom line improved from the year-ago quarter’s level of $1.16 per share.
Total quarterly revenues decreased from $32.9 billion in the prior-year quarter to $32.2 billion. The top line, however, beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $29.8 billion.
Better-than-expected quarterly results can be primarily attributed to an increase in refining margins, higher ethanol margins and lower total cost of sales. The positives were partially offset by a decline in renewable diesel sales volumes.

Segmental Performance of VLO
Adjusted operating income in the Refining segment totaled $1,665 million, up from $568 million in the year-ago quarter. The segment’s performance was supported by a higher refining margin per barrel of throughput.
In the Ethanol segment, Valero reported an adjusted operating profit of $183 million, up from $153 million in the prior-year quarter. A higher ethanol margin per gallon of production aided the business segment.
Operating loss in the Renewable Diesel segment totaled $28 million against an operating income of $35 million in the year-ago quarter. Renewable diesel sales volume declined to 2,717 thousand gallons per day from 3,544 in the year-ago quarter. Our estimate for the same was pegged at 3,196 thousand gallons per day. The segment was affected by a decline in the renewable diesel margin per gallon of sales compared to the year-ago level.
VLO’s Throughput Volumes
In the third quarter, Valero’s refining throughput volumes totaled 3,087 thousand barrels per day (MBbls/d), up from the year-ago quarter’s figure of 2,884 MBbls/d. The figure came in higher than our estimate of 3,070.6 MBbls/d.
In terms of feedstock composition, sweet crude, medium/light sour crude and heavy sour crude accounted for 53.8%, 9.1% and 16.4%, respectively, of the total volume. The remaining volume came from residuals, other feedstock, and blendstocks and others.
The Gulf Coast contributed 60% to the total throughput volume, while the Mid-Continent, North Atlantic and West Coast regions accounted for 15%, 17% and 8%, respectively.
VLO’s Throughput Margins
The refining margin per barrel of throughput increased to $13.14 from the year-ago level of $9.09.
Refining operating expenses per barrel of throughput were $4.71 compared with $4.73 in the year-ago quarter.
Depreciation and amortization expenses increased to $2.57 per barrel from $2.22 in the prior-year period.
Valero’s adjusted refining operating income was $5.86 per barrel of throughput compared with $2.14 a year ago.
VLO’s Cost of Sales
Total cost of sales amounted to $30,396 million, down from the year-ago quarter’s figure of $32,122 million. The decline can be attributed to a fall in the cost of materials and others.
Capital Investment & Balance Sheet of VLO
The third-quarter capital investment totaled $409 million, of which $364 million was allocated toward sustaining the business.
The company had cash and cash equivalents of $4.8 billion at the end of the third quarter. As of Sep. 30, 2025, it had a total debt of $8.4 billion and finance-lease obligations of $2.2 billion.

Valero Energy Q3 Earnings Beat Estimates on Higher Refining Margins

SLB SLB has reported third-quarter 2025 earnings of 69 cents per share (excluding charges and credits), which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 66 cents. The bottom line, however, decreased from the year-ago quarter’s level of 89 cents.
The oilfield services giant recorded total quarterly revenues of $8,928 million, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $8,930 billion. The top line declined from the year-ago quarter’s figure of $9,159 million.
The better-than-expected quarterly earnings were primarily driven by growth in the Digital segment and two months of contribution from the ChampionX acquisition.

Revenues in the Digital unit totaled $658 million, up 3% from the year-ago quarter’s level. Pre-tax operating income of $187 million was down from $190 million a year ago. The unit's revenues increased year over year, primarily due to growth in the Digital Operations revenue and higher revenues from Platforms & Applications. The Digital segment’s revenues include the impact of two months of activity from ChampionX.
Revenues in the Reservoir Performance unit decreased 8% year over year to $1.68 billion. Pre-tax operating income totaled $312 million, which declined 15% year over year. The figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $295 million. The revenues were affected due to diminished intervention and stimulation activity in Saudi Arabia and activity declines in Mexico also contributed to the same.
The Well Construction segment’s revenues fell 10% from the year-earlier quarter’s level to $2.97 billion. Pre-tax operating income decreased 22% to $558 million and the Zacks Consensus Estimate for the same was pegged at $525 million. The decline was due to a wider reduction in drilling activities across Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Namibia, North America and Asia. However, higher revenues from North America and offshore Guyana partially offset the decline.
Revenues in the Production Systems segment amounted to $3.47 billion, up from $3.04 billion a year ago. Pre-tax operating income improved 8% year over year to $559 million, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $565 million. The segment benefited from two months of contribution from the ChampionX production chemicals and artificial lift businesses, partially offset by an unfavorable geographic mix affecting surface production systems and completions.
Cash Flow & Financials
SLB reported a free cash flow of $1.1 billion in the third quarter.
As of Sep. 30, 2025, the company had approximately $3.59 billion in cash and short-term investments. It registered a long-term debt of $10.84 billion at the end of the quarter.
Outlook
SLB reiterated its full-year 2025 capital investment (including capex, exploration data costs and APS investments) guidance is approximately $2.4 billion, including the impact of the ChampionX acquisition. The projected figure is lower than the 2024 level of $2.6 billion.

Liberty Energy Inc. LBRT reported a third-quarter 2025 adjusted net loss of 6 cents per share, wider than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 1 cent. In trading on Tuesday, shares of Cheniere Energy Inc. (Symbol: LNG) entered into oversold territory, changing hands as low as $223.35 per share. We define oversold territory using the Relative Strength Index, or RSI, which is a technical analysis indicator used to measure momentum on a scale of zero to 100. A stock is considered to be oversold if the RSI reading falls below 30.

As gasoline and diesel demand stagnates in developed economies, investors may become more cautious about backing large, long-term oil projects — a trend that could weigh on companies dependent on sustained high prices and continuous output growth.

The Zacks Oil and Gas - US E&P industry is a 33-stock group within the broader Zacks Oil - Energy sector. The industry currently carries a Zacks Industry Rank #225, which places it in the bottom 7% of 243 Zacks industries.

Industry's Current Valuation
Since oil and gas companies are debt-laden, it makes sense to value them based on the EV/EBITDA (Enterprise Value/ Earnings before Interest Tax Depreciation and Amortization) ratio. This is because the valuation metric takes into account not just equity but also the level of debt. For capital-intensive companies, EV/EBITDA is a better valuation metric because it is not influenced by changing capital structures and ignores the effect of noncash expenses.
On the basis of the trailing 12-month enterprise value-to-EBITDA (EV/EBITDA), the industry is currently trading at 11.06X, significantly lower than the S&P 500’s 18.69X. It is, however, well above the sector’s trailing 12-month EV/EBITDA of 5.14X.
Over the past five years, the industry has traded as high as 16.02X, as low as 3.56X, with a median of 6.28X.

Cheniere Energy: Being the first company to receive regulatory approval to export LNG from its 2.6 billion cubic feet per day Sabine Pass terminal, Cheniere Energy certainly enjoys a distinct competitive advantage. The Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) company is primed for significant revenue and earnings growth on the back of solid operations and long-term contracts.
Cheniere Energy’s Corpus Christi Stage 3 expansion is also progressing well, with construction 68% complete and Train 1 scheduled for initial gas introduction by the year-end. The company’s gas supply deals for its Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi projects offer excellent cash flow visibility in the coming years. Notably, over the past 60 days, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for Cheniere Energy’s 2025 earnings has moved up 10%.
Coterra Energy: It is an independent upstream operator primarily engaged in the exploration, development and production of natural gas. Headquartered in Houston, TX, the firm owns some 186,000 net acres in the gas-producing Marcellus Shale of the Appalachian Basin. The company’s share of natural gas in its overall production is around 65%.
Coterra’s expected earnings per share growth rate for three to five years is currently 30.1%, which compares favorably with the industry's growth rate of 19.4%. Valued at around $18.5 billion, Coterra Energy — carrying a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) — has a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of roughly 6.3%, on average.
APA Corporation: Founded in 1954, APA Corporation is one of the world's leading independent energy companies engaged in the exploration, development and production of natural gas, crude oil and natural gas liquids. APA’s Suriname portfolio in South America is particularly exciting, where it continues to achieve significant drilling success. In the United States, the #3 Ranked upstream player mainly operates in the prolific Permian Basin.
APA beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate for earnings in two of the last four quarters and missed in the other two. It has a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of roughly 24.9%, on average. APA has a market capitalization of some $8.8 billion and carries a Value Score of A.
Magnolia Oil & Gas: The company’s asset base is centered around two highly productive regions: the Giddings Field and Karnes County, which are known for their high returns and long production life cycles. These areas are characterized by low breakeven costs and strong well performance, allowing Magnolia to generate high returns on invested capital.
Magnolia Oil & Gas has a market capitalization of about $4.6 billion. The Zacks Rank #3 company beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate for earnings in each of the last four quarters. MGY carries a Value Score of B.

Ausbil Investment Management's decision to acquire more than $4.3 million worth of NextEra Energy stock looks like a big bet on a stock that has underperformed the benchmark S&P 500 over the last year. Bear in mind, following this purchase, NextEra Energy is now Ausbil's largest single position. The stock now represents nearly 6% of its total AUM, meaning the portfolio managers have strong conviction in NextEra's potential.
Nevertheless, NextEra's three-year performance isn't anything to write home about. Shares have generated a three-year total return of only 18%, which equates to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.8%. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 has generated a total return of 90% over that same period and a CAGR of 23.8%.
In other words, this is a notable buy, as it shows at least one large institutional money manager is making a significant bet on NextEra stock. Given the company's key role within the North American utility industry and its focus on renewables and sustainable energy, investors who are seeking exposure to the utility sector may be well served by giving NextEra stock a closer look.
That said, NextEra's chronic underperformance versus the S&P 500 should also be taken into account. No institutional move should ever be the sole reason for buying or selling a stock, and while this move is significant, NextEra stock still has much to prove.

Big Money Move: NextEra Energy Soars to Fund's Top Holding After $4 Million Buy, According to Recent Filing

Chevron Corporation CVX is preparing to spud the Korikori-1 exploration well later this month in Suriname’s Block 5, as confirmed by state-owned Staatsolie. The well site lies about 78 km offshore in the north-central portion of the block, in shallow waters of roughly 40 meters. Chevron holds a 40% operating stake, alongside Paradise Oil Company (40%) and QatarEnergy (20%).
Suriname’s National Environmental Authority granted Chevron its drilling permit in late July 2025. The Noble Regina Allen jack-up rig — under a $17.7 million contract — is scheduled to arrive in early October, with drilling operations expected to last around 90 days.
A Step Forward in Suriname’s Offshore Journey
The Korikori-1 project signals an important phase in Suriname’s offshore exploration efforts, especially following multiple deepwater discoveries in nearby blocks. Block 5, spanning about 2,200 km², is strategically located between 45 and 82 km offshore in the western part of the country’s Nickerie district.
Data from the well will help assess hydrocarbon presence, quality and volume, potentially unlocking new shallow-water opportunities in the Suriname-Guyana Basin, one of the world’s most closely watched frontier regions.
Boost for Local Participation & Supply Chain
Chevron’s operations will be supported by shore-based logistics from Paramaribo, including fuel, supplies and personnel services. Staatsolie emphasized that the drilling campaign will enhance local participation, opening doors for Surinamese contractors and suppliers to engage in offshore support and logistics.
Chevron Expands South American Portfolio
A successful Korikori-1 well would further strengthen Chevron’s South American footprint. The U.S. supermajor already holds a 30% interest in Guyana’s prolific Stabroek Block, operated by ExxonMobil. Chevron has also indicated plans for additional exploration wells in the region, reflecting its growing confidence in the basin’s long-term potential.
