Kenvue gets off on the wrong foot
Kenvue was spun off from Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) in mid-2023. It basically owns its former parent's over-the-counter products. It is more like a consumer staples company than a healthcare company in many ways, even though it sells things like Tylenol. Tylenol is notable right now because it was just highlighted as a potential risk if taken during pregnancy. That led investors to dump the stock.

On top of that, the healthcare-focused consumer staples maker is also performing a bit poorly right now. In the second quarter of 2025, sales fell 4% and organic sales dropped 4.2%. Adjusted earnings came in at $0.29 per share, down from $0.32 in the same quarter of 2024. It isn't shocking for a newly separated business to have some issues as it starts out its new, stand-alone life. And given the generally stable nature of consumer staples products, it is probably worth giving the company the benefit of the doubt.
But at the same time, the stock has fallen notably, and the yield has risen to a rather high 5.5%. The average dividend yield for a consumer staples stock is 2.7%. If you can handle some near-term uncertainty and have a contrarian streak, Kenvue may be of interest to you. Just go in recognizing that there isn't much of a dividend track record to go on here (though it is worth noting that its former parent is a Dividend King).
Pfizer is doing what needs to be done
Pfizer is one of the oldest and most respected pharmaceutical companies in the world. It has proven that it knows how to survive in what is a very technologically complicated and competitive business. Yet the stock has a huge 6.9% yield right now as it faces down some typical industry headwinds.
There are perception issues around drugmakers that are a hindrance today. But Pfizer is working to get back into favor, noting that it recently inked a deal with the U.S. government to make sizable capital investments in the country, keep consumer costs low, and avoid tariff issues. In addition, the company recently inked a deal to buy Metsera (NASDAQ: MTSR) to bolster its drug pipeline. That's an effort to offset the expected hit from a patent cliff the company is facing and was necessitated by Pfizer's lack of success with its own pipeline of drug candidates.
However, dealing with the government and patents is just normal for the drug industry. Still, the high yield highlights a real risk. Pfizer cut its dividend when it acquired Wyeth back in 2009. With the payout ratio hovering in the 90% range, which is high, the board of directors might choose to cut the dividend again as it completes its Metsera deal. It is probably best to view Pfizer as a turnaround story, noting that the stock price has fallen nearly 60% since late 2021. If the dividend holds, it is icing on the cake.
3. Omega Healthcare stood tall through the storm
Omega Healthcare is going to be the easiest stock for dividend investors to love on this list. The company is a senior-housing-focused real estate investment trust (REIT). The dividend yield is an attractive 6.6%. But the big story is around what happened to the dividend during the coronavirus pandemic.
That period of time was particularly difficult for senior housing assets, since the elderly were most at risk and COVID-19 spread most easily in group settings. Omega had to deal with a large number of tenants who couldn't pay their rent. That process is nearly over -- and here's the impressive part -- the dividend was sustained right through all of it. Many peers resorted to dividend cuts. In fact, Omega is starting to grow again, with over half a billion dollars in assets acquired in the second quarter of 2025 alone.
The worst is over, and now Omega can get back to more normal operations. Only buy it if you don't mind investing in an industry that was in the news in a bad way just recently. That said, this REIT is offering a huge dividend yield and is, frankly, one of the cleanest dirty shirts in the senior housing niche.
Don't just look at yield when buying these stocks
Kenvue, Pfizer, and Omega are all interesting dividend stocks with high yields. But you need to dig into each of the stories before you hit the buy button. Of the trio, Omega is probably the least risky choice, given how well it survived the pandemic. Kenvue is a bit of an unknown, but its business is fairly stable despite some post-J&J separation wobbles. And Pfizer is almost certain to survive and thrive, but what happens to the dividend is less clear, given the company's dividend history.

1. Kenvue is a boring consumer-staples business
Kenvue was created when it was spun off from "Dividend King" Johnson & Johnson. (A Dividend King is a company that has raised its dividend annually for 50-plus consecutive years.) That left J&J operating a drug and medical-device company and Kenvue operating J&J's over-the-counter business.
Kenvue is a consumer-staples company, with iconic brands like Band-Aid, Johnson's Shampoo, Aveeno, and Tylenol. However, right now, that last brand has gotten a lot of negative attention after it was singled out by members of the Trump administration as presenting a potential health issue for the baby if taken during pregnancy.
That attention has resulted in Kenvue's stock price plunging. The stock price drop pushed the dividend yield up to 5.5%.
It is still a young business, for sure, but Kenvue has a strong stable of brands and products to which customers are loyal. This isn't a fly-by-night company, and the negativity probably represents an emotional pendulum swing that's gone too far. It's true that the business hasn't been performing particularly well in 2025 and recently lowered its full-year guidance, but even good brands go through weak periods.
It seems highly likely that this consumer-staples company will muddle through this period in one piece while continuing to reward investors for sticking around. That, by the way, is exactly what former parent J&J has provided for decades. A $1,000 investment will get you around 66 shares of Kenvue stock.
2. Medtronic is closing in on a big dividend achievement
Johnson & Johnson is a Dividend King because it has increased its dividend for over five decades. Medtronic's streak is at 48 years, so it's just two years shy of that incredible achievement. The company isn't planning to fall short, noting that it specifically stated that a planned business spinoff of its diabetes division won't lead to a change in its dividend policy.
The spinoff, however, is part of an important business overhaul. Medtronic, which makes medical devices, has been working through a period of slow growth. Now it has new products coming out and is looking to focus on only its most profitable businesses.
Diabetes doesn't have the same margins as the rest of the company, and the spinoff is expected to be instantly accretive to earnings. This spinoff and other changes being made should position the company for stronger growth in the years ahead.
That said, Wall Street is taking a show-me attitude. Medtronic's yield is a historically elevated 3% or so. If you like fairly boring dividend stocks, $1,000 will net you around 10 shares of Medtronic while the company works to get back into investors' good graces.
3. Pfizer is a high-risk/high-reward dividend stock
Pfizer has the highest yield here at nearly 7%. However, the dividend-payout ratio is hovering worryingly close to 100%.
The pharmaceutical giant has cut its dividend before, specifically following the large acquisition of Wyeth. Given that it's again working on a big acquisition of Metsera, there's a risk that the dividend gets a haircut.
When you add upcoming patent expirations to the list of issues, you can see why investors are worried. But Pfizer is one of the largest and most resilient drug companies on the planet, and what's happening to the business right now isn't unusual for a drug company.
If you shift your view and look at it as a turnaround stock, it could be worth buying. The high yield, in this case, is simply a sign that the stock is deeply unloved today. But even if there's a dividend cut, a dividend is likely to continue being paid. If history is any guide, the dividend will start to grow again after a reset.
The Metsera acquisition is actually a sign that the company is doing what it needs to do to get back on track. Simply put, Pfizer wasn't having enough success with its own drug pipeline, so it bought a company with more promising drug candidates. It was the right move and a statement to the company's long-term staying power. A $1,000 commitment here will allow you to buy roughly 40 shares.
Three options, from low risk to high risk
If you want a boring high-yield healthcare stock that's on the cusp of being a Dividend King, Medtronic is for you. If you don't mind a little uncertainty, Kenvue's consumer-staples business could be interesting, even as the company deals with some business headwinds. For turnaround lovers, Pfizer's high yield is a sign that Wall Street isn't fond of the drugmaker, even though it has proven that it will do what's necessary to be a long-term survivor.

Kenvue is facing an unusual public relations crisis at the moment. The U.S. government has made claims that Tylenol may be a potential health concern during pregnancy. The stock has fallen dramatically, pushing the dividend yield up to a lofty 5.1% for what is, basically, a diversified consumer staples business with a large portfolio of industry-leading brands. There are risks here, since Kenvue has, for the moment, become a story stock. News flow will have an outsized effect on the shares until this issue passes. However, for more aggressive contrarian investors, this could be an opportunistic time to buy Kenvue.
2. General Mills is starting an investment year
General Mills isn't hiding the problems it faces. Fiscal first-quarter 2026 sales fell 7%, with organic sales down 3%. That's not good, but the company isn't sitting still and doing nothing. It has been warning investors that fiscal 2026 will be an investment year, in which the food maker will be increasing its spending on things like advertising and innovation. In fact, it's going to be something of a kitchen sink year, since the divestiture of the company's yogurt operations is going to be a drag on performance, as well. Periods like this happen.
Despite a very long and successful history of navigating the consumer staples sector and customer buying trends, General Mills' shares have been hard hit. The dividend yield has been pushed up to 5%. But while the dividend isn't getting increased every year, it has trended generally higher over the long term. Sure, quarterly earnings are likely to be rough reading in fiscal 2026, but that could be signaling a long-term opportunity for income investors to pick up a company that is a valuable partner to retailers, offering people the well-known brands they trust.
3. Realty Income is the net lease giant
Last up here is Realty Income, which has a roughly 5.4% dividend yield right now. The company has increased its dividend annually for three decades at a slow and steady pace of 4.2%, annualized. That's about what you should expect over the long term from this large net lease real estate investment trust (REIT), which is basically built from the ground up to be a reliable dividend stock.
A net lease requires the tenant to pay most property-level expenses, freeing Realty Income from the cost and hassle of maintaining its properties. That said, it is the largest competitor in its niche, with over 15,600 properties, exposure to retail and industrial assets, among others, and a portfolio that spans the United States and Europe. Add in an investment grade rated balance sheet, and Realty Income has proven that it can live up to its trademarked nickname, "The Monthly Dividend Company."
Unlike the other two stocks here, Realty Income doesn't come with any near-term caveats. It's just a reliable, high-yield stock that even the most conservative income investors should probably consider buying today.

The S&P 500 index is the de facto market measure, but markets are made up of many different businesses. Meet Kenvue
Kenvue began to take shape in late 2022 when Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) unveiled the new name for its former consumer healthcare business, which it was transforming into a stand-alone public company. The name comes from the words "ken," which means knowledge, and "vue," which references sight. Johnson & Johnson ultimately completed an initial public offering (IPO) of the business in 2023. The companies officially separated later that year when Johnson & Johnson completed an exchange offer with its shareholders, giving them control over the newly independent company.
Kenvue is one of the world's largest consumer healthcare product companies. It owns a portfolio of leading consumer healthcare product brands focused on self-care (e.g., Tylenol and Band-Aid), skin health and beauty (e.g., Aveeno and Neutrogena), and essential health (e.g., Listerine). The company reported nearly $15.5 billion in sales last year and recorded over $1 billion in profit.
While Kenvue owns a global portfolio of iconic consumer healthcare products, innovation is part of its DNA. It has launched over 100 new product innovations annually since 2020.
The initial struggle
Johnson & Johnson believed that Kenvue could thrive as a stand-alone company. The business was delivering solid organic revenue growth as more consumers around the world relied on its consumer health products for their daily lives. Johnson & Johnson expected Kenvue to deliver improved profit margins, as the independent company could operate more effectively. Meanwhile, an independent Kenvue would have more flexibility to pursue acquisitions to further enhance its global portfolio and growth profile.
Unfortunately, things haven't played out that way. Kenvue has struggled to grow its sales (they were flat last year and down 4% in the second quarter of 2025). Meanwhile, instead of growing its profit margins, its earnings have tumbled due to higher costs and other factors.
Things have gone from bad to worse this year after the Trump administration linked Tylenol usage by expectant mothers to autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Those concerns have weighed heavily on the stock.
Taking action to get back on track
Kenvue's problems have drawn the attention of activist investors. Starboard Value pressed the company to make changes, which it has done by refreshing the board and bringing in a new senior leadership team. The company hired a new CFO in May and brought in a new interim CEO a couple of months later.
The new management team is working with advisors to explore strategic alternatives for the company. Those options could include optimizing the brand portfolio and enhancing its operating performance to boost growth, as well as other initiatives to unlock shareholder value. Among the things the company is considering is the sale or spinoff of its skin health business.
Selling off pieces of the company could unlock shareholder value. For example, analysts believe that the skin health and beauty unit could be worth between $6 billion and $9 billion. Selling that division to a rival consumer health products company or a private equity fund would provide it with the cash to bolster its balance sheet and potentially facilitate acquisitions to enhance its remaining business units. A sale of this unit at or above the high end of that range could provide a big boost to Kenvue's stock price.
Meanwhile, tangible actions that drive a growth reacceleration and improve its profitability would also give the shares a boost in the coming year. Additionally, positive news regarding Tylenol would also be a major upside catalyst.
Healthy upside potential
Kenvue has gotten off to a rocky start as an independent public company. However, activist investors have pushed for change, resulting in a refreshed board, a new senior leadership team, and a renewed strategic focus on unlocking value. Those actions could help drive a rebound in the share price next year. That upside potential makes Kenvue an enticing turnaround candidate. In the meantime, investors will get paid well while they wait for the company to execute its turnaround strategy.

Notable Friday Option Activity: BA, DVA, KVUE

The iShares ESG MSCI USA Leaders ETF is seeing unusually high volume in afternoon trading Friday, with over 316,000 shares traded versus three month average volume of about 30,000. Shares of SUSL were up about 0.1% on the day.
Components of that ETF with the highest volume on Friday were Nvidia, trading off about 0.4% with over 84.0 million shares changing hands so far this session, and Intel, up about 0.7% on volume of over 68.8 million shares. Kenvue is the component faring the best Friday, up by about 8.6% on the day, while Newmont is lagging other components of the iShares ESG MSCI USA Leaders ETF, trading lower by about 7.1%.

Friday's ETF with Unusual Volume: SUSL

In trading on Friday, the iShares Global Consumer Staples ETF is outperforming other ETFs, up about 1.3% on the day. Components of that ETF showing particular strength include shares of Kenvue, up about 8.8% and shares of Colgate-palmolive, up about 1.9% on the day.
And underperforming other ETFs today is the Global X Silver Miners ETF, off about 8.1% in Friday afternoon trading. Among components of that ETF with the weakest showing on Friday were shares of New Pacific Metals, lower by about 17%, and shares of Gold Resource, lower by about 14.8% on the day.

Friday's ETF Movers: KXI, SIL

In early trading on Friday, shares of Kenvue topped the list of the day's best performing components of the S&P 500 index, trading up 5.6%. Year to date, Kenvue has lost about 30.2% of its value.
And the worst performing S&P 500 component thus far on the day is State Street, trading down 4.9%. State Street is showing a gain of 9.5% looking at the year to date performance.
Two other components making moves today are Oracle, trading down 4.4%, and American Express, trading up 3.9% on the day.

S&P 500 Movers: STT, KVUE

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Thursday closed down -0.63%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.65%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -0.36%. December E-mini S&P futures (ESZ25) fell -0.68%, and December E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQZ25) fell -0.41%.
Stock indexes gave up an early advance on Thursday and retreated after regional bank stocks tumbled due to concerns about credit quality, which fueled long liquidation and risk-off sentiment in the stock market. Zions Bancorp sank by more than 13% and Western Alliance Bancorp dropped by more than 10% to drag regional bank stocks lower after they disclosed problems with loans involving allegations of fraud.

Stocks initially moved higher on Thursday as strong technology earnings boosted market sentiment. Optimism that AI spending will continue to rise is pushing stocks higher today after Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturer and chipmaker for Apple and Nvidia, raised its projections for 2025 revenue growth for the second time this year. This underscored the strength in global AI spending.
Dovish Fed comments on Thursday knocked T-note yields lower and also supported stocks. The 10-year T-note yield dropped to a 6.25-month low of 3.97% on Thursday after Fed Governor Christopher Waller said the Fed can continue to lower interest rates in quarter-percentage-point increments to support a faltering labor market. Also, Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin said US productivity growth seems to be improving “significantly,” possibly containing any inflationary impacts from trade tariffs.
Thursday’s US economic news was mixed for stocks. On the negative side, the Oct Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey fell -36.0 to a 6-month low of -12.8, weaker than expectations of 10.0. Conversely, the Oct NAHB housing market index rose +5 to a 6-month high of 37, stronger than expectations of 33.
The escalation of trade tensions between the US and China, along with the ongoing US government shutdown, has sparked a buying spree in precious metals as a haven, with gold and silver reaching fresh all-time highs today.
The shutdown of the US government continues, weighing on market sentiment and delaying key economic reports. The government shutdown means delays in the release of government reports, including the last three weeks of weekly initial unemployment claims, the Aug US trade report, and the Sep payroll report. Last Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said the September consumer price report, which was originally scheduled to be released on Wednesday, will be released on October 24. The White House has warned that if the government shutdown lingers, it would trigger widespread dismissals of employees in government programs that don’t align with President Trump’s priorities. Bloomberg Economics estimates that 640,000 federal workers will be furloughed during the shutdown, which would expand jobless claims and push the unemployment rate up to 4.7%.
The markets this week will focus on earnings results as the Q3 earnings season begins. Rising corporate earnings expectations are a bullish backdrop for stocks. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 78% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have beaten forecasts. Also, more than 22% of companies in the S&P 500 that provided guidance for their Q3 earnings results are expected to beat analysts’ expectations, the highest in a year. However, Q3 profits are expected to have risen by +7.2% y/y, the smallest increase in two years. Also, Q3 sales growth is projected to slow to +5.9% y/y from 6.4% in Q2.
The markets are pricing in a 100% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on Oct 28-29.
Overseas stock markets settled higher on Thursday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.84%. China’s Shanghai Composite closed up +0.10%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +1.27%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) on Thursday closed up +16.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -5.2 bp to 3.976%. Dec T-notes recovered from early losses on Thursday and rallied to a 5-week high, and the 1-year T-note yield dropped to a 6.25-month low of 3.967%.
T-notes rallied Thursday due to dovish Fed comments. Fed Governor Christopher Waller said the Fed can continue to lower interest rates to support a faltering labor market, and Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin stated that US productivity growth appears to be improving “significantly.” T-notes also found support after the Oct Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey fell more than expected to a 6-month low, and after inflation expectations fell when the 10-year breakeven inflation rate dropped to a 5-month low of 2.270%. T-notes surged to their highs on Thursday afternoon when regional bank stocks plummeted due to concerns about credit quality, sparking safe-haven demand for T-notes.
T-notes also have support from the ongoing US government shutdown, which could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates.
European government bond yields were mostly lower on Thursday. The 10-year German bund yield was unchanged at 2.570%. The 10-year UK gilt yield dropped to a 3.25-month low of 4.496% and finished down -4.2 bp to 4.501%.
UK Aug manufacturing production rose +0.7% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.2% m/m
ECB Governing Council member Wunsch said, “I would say that the probability that the ECB cuts interest rates again has been receding over the last few weeks or months.”
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
Regional bank stocks tumbled on Thursday, led by a -13% decline in Zions Bancorp (ZION) and a -10% slide in Western Alliance Bancorp (WAL) after they disclosed problems with loans involving allegations of fraud. Zions Bancorp announced that it will record a $60 million provision and charge-off of $50 million after legal action was initiated by banks and other lenders related to two commercial and industrial loans extended by a bank division. Also, Citizens Financial Group (CFG) closed down more than -6%, and Regions Financial (RF), KeyCorp (KEY), Truist Financial (TFC), and Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) closed down more than -5%.
Kenvue Inc (KVUE) closed down more than -13% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after Citigroup published a research note flagging a “major” lawsuit in the UK related to the use of baby powder that could cause financial implications for the company.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) closed down more than -10% after projecting 2026 earnings of $2.20 to $2.40 a share, weaker than the consensus of $2.41.
F5 Inc (FFIV) closed down more than -10%, adding to Wednesday’s -3% loss, after a potentially “catastrophic” breach of the cybersecurity provider blamed on state-backed hackers from China, with the hackers gaining “long-term, persistent access” to certain systems and stealing files, including source code.
Marsh & McLennan Cos (MMC) closed down more than -8% after reporting Q3 adjusted operating margin of 22.7%, below the consensus of 22.9%.
Verisk Analytics (VRSK) closed down more than -6% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after Rothschild & Co Redburn downgraded the stock to sell from neutral with a price target of $220.
Travelers Cos (TRV) closed down more than -2% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q3 net premiums written of $11.47 billion, below the consensus of $11.84 billion.
Lululemon Athletica (LULU) closed down more than -1% after Bernstein downgraded the stock to market perform from outperform.
Chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks moved higher Thursday after Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturer and chipmaker for Apple and Nvidia, raised its projections for 2025 revenue growth for the second time this year. As a result, Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +5% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100, and ON Semiconductor (ON) closed up more than +5%. Also, Western Digital (WDC) closed up by more than +4% and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed up by more than +3%. In addition, Nvidia (NVDA), Analog Devices (ADI), KLA Corp (KLAC), and Arista Networks (ANET) closed up more than +1%.
Gold mining stocks rallied on Thursday after the price of COMEX gold climbed to a new record high. As a result, Kinross Gold (KGC), Barrick Mining (B), Newmont (NEM), Gold Fields Ltd (GFI), and Anglogold Ashanti Plc (AU) closed up more than +2%.
Praxis Precision Medicines (PRAX) closed up more than +183% after two studies in its Phase 3 Essential3 program of ulixacaltamide to treat tremors met their primary endpoints.
JB Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) closed up more than +22% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q3 revenue of $3.05 billion, stronger than the consensus of $3.02 billion.
Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings (KNX) closed up more than +6% after Bank of America upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $50.
Salesforce (CRM) closed up more than +3% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after projecting revenue growth will accelerate to double digits in the coming years, and announced it will purchase an additional $7 billion of shares in the next six months.
Snap-on Inc (SNA) closed up more than +3% after reporting Q3 EPS of $5.02, stronger than the consensus of $4.64.
