JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) Rises Higher Than Market: Key Facts

Six of the largest banks, including JPMorgan JPM, Citigroup C, Wells Fargo WFC, Morgan Stanley MS, Bank of America and Goldman Sachs, have been instructed by U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders to focus more on boosting lending activities rather than raising dividends and share buybacks.
Per a Reuters report, the senators sent joint letters to the CEOs of these banks because they were of the opinion that, in the name of easing regulations, these banks have been making wealthy shareholders richer and raising executive compensation at the cost of financial stability and economic growth.
The senators said that while these banks lobby for deregulation in Washington under the banner of boosting lending and economic growth, their actual behavior prioritizes shareholder returns, rather than significantly increasing loans.
While JPM, Citigroup, Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley declined to comment, BofA and Goldman Sachs did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Recent Capital Actions by Major Banks
After clearing the Federal Reserve's annual stress test this year, which reflected that lenders had enough capital to withstand scenarios such as a severe economic downturn, banks announced plans to raise their third-quarter dividends.
JPMorgan approved a $50-billion share repurchase program and hiked its quarterly dividend to $1.50 per share. Goldman Sachs raised its dividend 33.3% to $4 per share and Citigroup hiked its dividend 7.1% to 60 cents.
Likewise, Morgan Stanley announced an 8% hike in dividend to $1.00 per share and reauthorized a multi-year share repurchase program of up to $20 billion. Wells Fargo raised its third-quarter stock dividend 12.5% to 45 cents per share.
Warren & Sanders Push to Keep Banks Strong
The senators’ recent actions come as they seek to preserve and strengthen post-2008 banking safeguards. They have been opposing Wall Street’s push to roll back capital requirements and annual stress testing rules, which were put in place after the global financial crisis.
The senators argue that loosening capital and liquidity standards would weaken the financial system and increase the risk of another crisis. They urge regulators to maintain rigorous oversight, require greater transparency on bank practices such as overdraft fees, and redirect bank profits toward responsible lending rather than shareholder payouts.
They emphasize that higher capital requirements and stress tests are not burdens but essential tools for economic stability because they believe that renewed deregulatory efforts, particularly under a second Trump administration, can leave the economy more vulnerable in the next downturn.
Notably, the Fed has recently finalized new capital rules for the largest banks, reinforcing resilience against future crises, an outcome that aligns with the senators’ push for stricter safeguards.
How Will Increased Lending Affect Banks’ Profitability?
In the short term, if economic conditions are robust, higher lending generally lifts bank’s profits as net interest income (NII) increases. Increased lending leads to a rise in the total interest collected, aiding bank profits, especially when interest rates allow for a healthy margin.
However, in the long run, if banks are obliged to lend to riskier clients or during economic downturns, loan losses may eventually erode profits. Loan loss provisions and non-performing assets typically rise with aggressive lending, diminishing returns over time.

Once the hottest cryptocurrency in the world, XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) has seen its momentum grind to a halt. Its price dropped about 7% last month, and it has been below $3 for more than a week. XRP isn't in dire straits, but investors are wondering whether to stick around or start selling.

Lower rates could drive more money to crypto
The Federal Reserve is meeting three more times this year, on Sept. 16-17, Oct. 28-29, and Dec. 9-10. There's a high probability of a rate cut at the September meeting, and we may see multiple rate cuts by the end of the year.
Lower interest rates tend to be beneficial for cryptocurrencies and other higher risk assets. When rates are high, U.S. Treasuries and other safe assets are more popular, since they offer a reasonable and nearly risk-free return. As rates drop and those returns get smaller, safe assets are a less attractive investment.
There are a few caveats here. There's still a chance, albeit a small one, that the Fed holds interest rates where they are. If it cuts rates, that's not guaranteed to raise cryptocurrency prices. And even if it does, it would be for many cryptocurrencies, not just XRP.
Still, the most likely scenario is that interest rates come down. As one of the most popular cryptocurrencies, XRP would be well positioned to benefit from that news.
An XRP ETF decision in October
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the first spot crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for Bitcoin and Ethereum last year. It's currently reviewing applications for XRP ETFs and plans to rule on those in October. Polymarket has the approval odds this year at 95% (as of Sept. 5).
ETF approval is the biggest reason I think XRP will do well in the coming months. If those funds get SEC approval, they will need to start buying XRP to support their ETFs. In addition, ETF approval would likely attract more retail investors, particularly those who see it as a sign of the cryptocurrency's legitimacy.
JPMorgan Chase has estimated that XRP ETFs could see inflows of $4 billion to $8 billion within the first year. But it made this projection at the start of 2025 based on the performance of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs. Ethereum ETF inflows picked up significantly during the last two months, to $5.4 billion in July and $3.9 billion in August, so JPMorgan's estimate could end up being on the low side. Canary Capital Chief Executive Officer Steve McClurg thinks that XRP ETF inflows may reach $5 billion -- within the first month.
XRP's success depends on Ripple
Rate cuts and ETF approval are potential short- and medium-term growth catalysts for XRP. Long-term growth is tied to Ripple's payments network and XRP's role in it.
Ripple developed XRP and its blockchain, the XRP Ledger (XRPL), to make cross-border payments more affordable and faster. Its payments network, RippleNet, is built on XRPL and uses blockchain technology to settle transactions in three to five seconds. This is a huge improvement for international payments, which can take several business days to complete with the widely used SWIFT system.
More than 11,500 financial institutions use SWIFT, compared to more than 300 that use RippleNet. And many of the banks that use RippleNet do so without using XRP, which serves as a bridge currency when needed and also to pay transaction fees on the XRPL.
Those numbers don't look great for Ripple, but in fairness, financial companies wouldn't change their payment systems overnight. To Ripple's credit, it has partnerships with several big banks, including Bank of America, American Express, and Banco Santander. Although it's still in the early stages, it has clearly drawn interest from financial institutions. If it's able to keep expanding its partnerships during the next few years, XRP will likely continue to be one of the most successful cryptocurrencies.

David Solomon, chairman and CEO of Goldman, stated, "With Goldman Sachs' decades of leadership innovating across public and private markets and T. Rowe Price's expertise in active investing, clients can invest confidently in the new opportunities for retirement savings and wealth creation."
This partnership between GS and TROW follows an executive order signed last month, aimed at expanding access to alternative assets for 401(k) participants, paving the way for broader participation in private market investments and enhanced retirement diversification.
This allows GS and TROW to leverage their expertise in private markets, grow assets under management, strengthen their position in the growing retirement solutions market and generate higher fee income through an expanded client base.
Private Market Ventures by Other Major Finance Firms
Other major financial firms such as BlackRock Inc. and JPMorgan have been enhancing their private markets capabilities to capitalize on rising demand and attract new clients.
Over the past year, BlackRock has invested more than $28 billion to strengthen its position in the high-growth private markets space. Further, BlackRock is targeting $400 billion in private markets fundraising by 2030, with an aim to double its operating income and market capitalization by 2030.
Likewise, in February 2025, JPMorgan announced an additional $50 billion allocation toward direct lending, solidifying its presence in the lucrative private credit market. Since 2021, JPMorgan has deployed more than $10 billion across 100+ private credit transactions, leveraging its extensive client base and vast origination platform.
Goldman's Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates
Shares of GS have gained 30.8% year to date compared with the industry's growth of 23.6%.
From a valuation standpoint, Goldman trades at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 14.91X, above the industry's average of 14.65X.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Goldman's 2025 and 2026 earnings implies year-over-year growth of 12.6% and 14.9%, respectively. The estimates for both years have remained unchanged over the past 30 days.

The Zacks Analyst Blog Highlights Goldman Sachs, T. Rowe Price, BlackRock and JPMorgan

Wall Street closed lower on Friday, pulled down by energy and financial stocks. Investors priced in signs of a sharp slowdown in August job growth against optimism that the Fed may move toward cutting interest rates soon. All three benchmark indexes closed in the red.
How Did the Benchmarks Perform?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) fell 0.5%, or 220.43 points, to close at 45,400.86. Twenty components of the 30-stock index ended in negative territory, while 10 ended in positive territory.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slid 7.31 points, remaining virtually unchanged to close at 21,700.39.
The S&P 500 lost 20.58 points, or 0.3%, to close at 6,481.50. Five of the 11 broad sectors of the benchmark index closed in the red. The Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE), the Financials Select Sector SPDR (XLF) and the Industrials Select Sector SPDR (XLI) declined 1.9%, 1.8% and 0.4%, respectively, while the Real Estate Select Sector SPDR (XLRE) advanced 1%.
The fear gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) decreased 0.8% to 15.18. A total of 16.95 billion shares were traded on Friday, higher than the last 20-session average of 16.05 billion. Advancers outnumbered decliners by a 1.87-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by 1.42-to-1 on the Nasdaq.
Jobs Report Casts a Pall on Wall Street
On Friday, Wall Street was dominated by a profoundly soft August jobs report from the Labor Bureau that revealed that the U.S. economy added just 22,000 jobs, well beneath consensus expectations of around 80,000, and included downward revisions to previous months. The number for July, however, was revised to 79,000 jobs from the previously reported 73,000. This data triggered concerns about the labor market’s strength and economic resilience, and amplified expectations that the Fed may move to cut interest rates, possibly as early as mid-September, with a potential 25 bps cut now highly anticipated. In fact, murmurs of a 50-bps cut are also making the rounds.
The markets opened on a hopeful note on Friday with rate-cut expectations lifting sentiment, but equity gains quickly reversed. Bond markets responded decisively, with yields tumbling, especially the benchmark 10-year Treasury, which underscored the rush to safety and reinforced the prospect of imminent policy easing. Financial stocks were among the worst hit.
Consequently, shares of Wells Fargo & Company WFC and JPMorgan Chase & Co. JPM fell 3.5% and 3.1%, respectively. WFC currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), while JPM boasts a Zacks Rank of (Buy). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
Oil Prices Weigh on the Markets
Oil prices also declined on Friday after the nonfarm payrolls report clouded the outlook for energy demand, while expectations of rising supply ahead of an OPEC and allies’ meeting this weekend added further pressure. Brent crude closed at $65.50/barrel, falling $1.49, or 2.22%. WTI crude closed at $61.87, sliding $1.61, or 2.54%.

For the week ending Sept. 5, 2025, U.S. stocks were mixed as weak August job growth, shifting Fed expectations and global uncertainties shaped sentiment. The S&P 500 gained about 0.3% and the Nasdaq rose 1.1%, boosted by tech strength and hopes of imminent rate cuts, while the Dow slipped 0.3% amid recession fears. Treasury yields fell as investors sought safety, and oil prices dropped on softer demand prospects ahead of the OPEC meeting. Trade tensions and macroeconomic headwinds added volatility, favoring growth sectors while traditional industrials underperformed.

The Labor Bureau reported that the unemployment rate for August had increased to 4.3%. The number for July remained unchanged at 4.2%. The average workweek for August remained unchanged at 34.2 hours, while the number for July was revised down to 34.2 from the previously reported 34.3. Average hourly earnings increased 0.3% in August after increasing by the same percentage in July.

Goldman Sachs GS has partnered with T. Rowe Price TROW to offer a diversified suite of public and private market solutions tailored for retirement and wealth investors. As part of the collaboration, Goldman will invest roughly $1 billion in T. Rowe Price, acquiring a stake of about 3.5%.
The alliance will focus on expanding private market access for individuals, advisors and plan sponsors, offering Target-Date Strategies (mid-2026), model portfolios, multi-asset offerings, personalized advice and advisor-managed accounts. It will also give Goldman Sachs access to T. Rowe Price’s retirement-focused clients, combining stable income with growth potential.
David Solomon, chairman and CEO of Goldman, stated, “With Goldman Sachs' decades of leadership innovating across public and private markets and T. Rowe Price's expertise in active investing, clients can invest confidently in the new opportunities for retirement savings and wealth creation.”
This partnership between GS and TROW follows an executive order signed last month, aimed at expanding access to alternative assets for 401(k) participants, paving the way for broader participation in private market investments and enhanced retirement diversification.
This allows GS and TROW to leverage their expertise in private markets, grow assets under management, strengthen their position in the growing retirement solutions market and generate higher fee income through an expanded client base.
Private Market Ventures by Other Major Finance Firms
Other major financial firms such as BlackRock Inc. BLK and JPMorgan JPM have been enhancing their private markets capabilities to capitalize on rising demand and attract new clients.
Over the past year, BlackRock has invested more than $28 billion to strengthen its position in the high-growth private markets space. Further, BlackRock is targeting $400 billion in private markets fundraising by 2030, with an aim to double its operating income and market capitalization by 2030.
Likewise, in February 2025, JPMorgan announced an additional $50 billion allocation toward direct lending, solidifying its presence in the lucrative private credit market. Since 2021, JPMorgan has deployed more than $10 billion across 100+ private credit transactions, leveraging its extensive client base and vast origination platform.
Goldman’s Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates
Shares of GS have gained 30.8% year to date compared with the industry’s growth of 23.6%.

From a valuation standpoint, Goldman trades at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 14.91X, above the industry’s average of 14.65X.

Private Markets Push: Can Goldman Profit From T. Rowe Price Tie-Up?

Looking at options trading activity among components of the Russell 3000 index, there is noteworthy activity today in American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (Symbol: AEO), where a total volume of 70,749 contracts has been traded thus far today, a contract volume which is representative of approximately 7.1 million underlying shares (given that every 1 contract represents 100 underlying shares). That number works out to 54.8% of AEO's average daily trading volume over the past month, of 12.9 million shares. Particularly high volume was seen for the $19 strike call option expiring February 20, 2026, with 6,913 contracts trading so far today, representing approximately 691,300 underlying shares of AEO. JPMorgan Chase & Co (Symbol: JPM) options are showing a volume of 37,128 contracts thus far today. Particularly high volume was seen for the $290 strike call option expiring November 21, 2025, with 2,414 contracts trading so far today, representing approximately 241,400 underlying shares of JPM. Especially high volume was seen for the $87 strike call option expiring September 05, 2025, with 3,354 contracts trading so far today, representing approximately 335,400 underlying shares of SBUX. Noteworthy Wednesday Option Activity: AEO, JPM, SBUX

A U.S. Judge has dismissed an antitrust lawsuit against 10 large banks, namely Bank of America BAC, JPMorgan JPM, Morgan Stanley MS, Citigroup C, Barclays BCS, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, NatWest and Wells Fargo.
The lawsuit alleged that BAC, JPM, MS, C and BCS conspired with five other banks to manipulate corporate bond prices at the expense of retail investors.
Details of the Lawsuit
Investors alleged that Bank of America, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup and Barclays, along with five other banks, earned billions of dollars by levying excessive charges on “odd-lot” trades since 2006.
Such trades are valued under $1 million or involve fewer than 1,000 bonds that are primarily corporate bonds. Investors accused the banks of wrongly charging 25% to 300% higher charges compared with larger “round-lot” trades to boost their profits, according to Reuters.
In October 2021, the case was originally dismissed by U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman. However, after a few months, he revealed that his wife held Bank of America’s shares while the case was pending, claiming that it didn’t impair his judgment on the case. In July 2024, the federal government appealed to the Manhattan court, reviving the case, stating that Liman’s conflict could call his impartiality into question.
Valerie Caproni, U.S. District Judge in Manhattan, stated that investors failed to demonstrate that the banks conspired to operate the Bond Desk, Trading Edge and Trade Web platforms or to shut out alternative platforms that promoted fairer pricing.
She further noted that, though the institutions accounted for roughly 65% of underwriting and 90% of trading in corporate bonds, this did not establish control over secondary market pricing. She also didn’t find any evidence of illegal activity in the four years preceding the April 2020 filing, a gap that undermined the case under the Sherman Antitrust Act. Caproni’s dismissal was issued with prejudice, implying that the lawsuit cannot be filed again.
