Why Robinhood Markets' Shares Jumped 15% on Monday

The expectation of the first interest rate cut in 2025 has skyrocketed after the release of tepid nonfarm payrolls data for August. The addition of a mere 22,000 jobs last month was neither too hot nor too cool.
This will pave the way for the Fed to initiate a rate cut in its next FOMC meeting scheduled on Sept. 16-17. At the same time, the chance of a near-term recession will not arise. The CME FedWatch interest rate derivative tool currently shows a 100% probability of 25% cut in the benchmark lending rate.
A low-interest rate regime will be beneficial for high-growth sectors like technology, consumer discretionary and cryptocurrency. At this stage, it will be prudent to invest in crypto-centric stocks with a favorable Zacks Rank.
Five such stocks are: Robinhood Markets Inc. HOOD, Interactive Brokers Group Inc. IBKR, NVIDIA Corp. NVDA, Cipher Mining Inc. CIFR and Riot Platforms Inc. RIOT.
Regulatory Tailwinds
On July 18, President Donald Trump signed the GENIUS Act (Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins) seeking to regulate the stablecoin market of the nation. Stablecoins are digital assets that are built to maintain a stable value relative to a “stable” asset like the US dollar. Giant retailers such as Walmart and Amazon are considering launching their own stablecoins to reduce dependence on traditional payment networks like plastic money.
Two major cryptocurrency-related regulations still pending are The CLARITY Act and the Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act. The CLARITY Act aims to define when crypto is a commodity or a security.
The CLARITY Act would establish a regulatory framework for digital assets other than stablecoins. This will allow crypto exchanges to register with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission thereby reducing the Securities and Exchange Commission’s regulation of digital currencies.
The Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act aims to prevent the Federal Reserve from issuing a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) directly to individuals or indirectly through intermediaries. The bill also prohibits the Federal Reserve from developing or issuing a CBDC without explicit authorization from Congress.

NVIDIA Corp.
NVIDIA is a semiconductor industry giant and one of the biggest success stories since 2023. As a leading designer of graphic processing units (GPUs), the NVDA stock usually soars on a booming crypto market. This is because GPUs are pivotal to data centers, artificial intelligence, and the creation of crypto assets. NVDA currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

The heads of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) say it's a "new day" for the two organizations. The regulators want to work together to ensure harmonized oversight and promote innovation in the field of digital assets. This collaboration is part of a wider push to develop U.S. cryptocurrency markets and digital assets.
On Sept. 5, SEC Chair Paul Atkins and CFTC Acting Chairman Caroline Pham announced a series of new joint priorities. These include relaxing derivatives rules, exploring exemptions so that decentralized finance (DeFi) projects can grow, and expanding equity trading hours -- potentially as far as 24/7 trading.

Moves toward 24/7 equity trading
Cryptocurrency and forex investors are no strangers to round-the-clock trading. Even for equities, trading outside the regular hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET is not new.
Several brokerages, including Robinhood (NASDAQ: HOOD), Interactive Brokers (NASDAQ: IBKR), and Charles Schwab (NYSE: SCHW), already offer some form of after-hours trading. Last November, the SEC greenlighted plans from the 24X National Exchange to offer 23-hour trading days.
Nasdaq and NYSE are both working toward longer trading hours. Last year, Intercontinental Exchange (NYSE: ICE), the company behind the NYSE, said that it wanted to extend U.S. trading to 22 hours a day, five days a week. Nasdaq plans to introduce 24-hour trading five days a week before the end of this year.
To some extent, proposals to extend trading hours run in parallel with moves to tokenize stocks and allow registered brokerages to offer spot crypto trading. Tokenized stocks are essentially blockchain-based tokens that represent shares in a company -- and like cryptocurrency, they can be traded at any time. The lines between what crypto exchanges and brokerages offer are becoming increasingly blurred.
What 24/7 trading might mean for investors
For retail investors, one big benefit of longer trading hours is that markets become more agile and accessible. It opens the way to react to news in the here and now, rather than waiting for the market bell. That may or may not be a good thing, given that panic investment decisions rarely pay off.
All the same, the current system does not favor people who want to manage their investments outside the regular working day. International investors may also appreciate extended hours. The World Economic Forum says that about 18% of U.S. equities are owned by people abroad, and a shift in trading times could boost this figure.
But it brings disadvantages, too. For investors, out-of-hours trading can mean:
Less liquidity: According to the NYSE, about 11% of equity trading takes place out of hours. These trades have less liquidity to work with, which can make it harder to execute trades. If they can get the trades done, after-hours investors may also not get the best prices.
Wider spreads: The other consequence of lower liquidity is that the bid-ask spread will grow, meaning trades can be more expensive. Plus, the National Best Bid and Offer (NBBO), which ensures that investors get the best price and tightest spread, does not operate round-the-clock.
Increased volatility: Prices can swing more if there are fewer traders in the market. Markets can also become more reactive as people trade on the back of positive or negative news without necessarily taking the time to process the information.
Right now, brokerages use alternative trading systems (ATS) to offer non-traditional trading hours. Some of this takes place via "dark pools" -- so named because trades don't become public until after they've executed. They may sound sinister, but they're registered with the SEC. They were designed to allow institutional investors to make large trades without moving the markets.
If the regulators' plans pan out, out-of-hours trading would take place on regulator-approved exchanges rather than in dark pools. This could take some of the risks out of extended trading. As two SEC commissioners pointed out in a statement last year, using lit exchanges -- the opposite of dark pools -- could mean increased investor protection and increased liquidity.
Nonetheless, there's still a lot of work to do behind the scenes to make extended trading a reality. In addition to practical questions of how to staff always-on exchanges, there are also technical and operational issues. Right now, financial institutions use the downtime to process certain trades, upgrade infrastructure, and more. Transitioning to something new won't be as simple as ringing a bell.
How investors can prepare for changing financial sands
Change is afoot in financial exchanges and regulation. It's a good time for investors to consider their investment strategies and identify assets that may benefit from regulatory developments.
In terms of the how, that means staying informed, maintaining a diversified portfolio, and considering strategies to handle round-the-clock markets. Investigate the credentials of any brokerage you use, and make sure you understand the risks. If you're a long-term investor, solid research and a firm hold on your investment strategy can help avoid middle-of-the-night trades.
As for potential investment opportunities, here are some areas to have on your radar:
Brokerages that are ready for extended trading: I mentioned Robinhood, Interactive Brokers, and Charles Schwab above. Robinhood, which also sells crypto and has rolled out tokenized assets in Europe, could be well-positioned to capitalize on regulatory changes.
Cryptocurrency ecosystems that will support tokenized assets: Tokenized assets are the other side of the extended trading hours coin. Keep an eye on smart-contract cryptos like Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) and Solana (CRYPTO: SOL), as these may be where tokenized securities will be built.
2025 has already seen significant changes in financial regulation, and there are more to come. Informed investors will be best-positioned to benefit as we move into a new era of finance.

Regulators Consider 24/7 Trading. Here's What Investors Need to Know

In recent trading, shares of Robinhood Markets Inc. Class A (Symbol: HOOD) have crossed above the average analyst 12-month target price of $11.50, changing hands for $11.82/share. When a stock reaches the target an analyst has set, the analyst logically has two ways to react: downgrade on valuation, or, re-adjust their target price to a higher level. Analyst reaction may also depend on the fundamental business developments that may be responsible for driving the stock price higher — if things are looking up for the company, perhaps it is time for that target price to be raised.
There are 12 different analyst targets within the Zacks coverage universe contributing to that average for Robinhood Markets Inc. Class A, but the average is just that — a mathematical average. There are analysts with lower targets than the average, including one looking for a price of $7.00. And then on the other side of the spectrum one analyst has a target as high as $25.00. Robinhood Markets Reaches Analyst Target Price

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Monday closed up +0.21%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.25%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +0.46%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU25) rose +0.25%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU25) rose up +0.49%.
Stocks settled higher on Monday on the prospect of a more accommodative Federal Reserve. The 10-year T-note yield fell to a 5-month low on Monday of 4.04%. The markets have fully priced in a 25 bp rate cut by the Fed at next week's FOMC meeting and priced in a 10% chance for a 50 bp rate cut. Strength in semiconductor makers led technology stocks and the overall market higher. However, this week's US Aug CPI and PPI reports will show how much room the Fed has to cut interest rates and support the job market.

Weaker-than-expected trade news from China is negative for global growth prospects after China's Aug exports rose +4.4% y/y, weaker than expectations of +5.5% y/y. Also, Aug imports rose +1.3% y/y, weaker than expectations of +3.4% y/y.
Market focus this week will be on any trade or tariff news. On Tuesday, the BLS will release annual benchmark revisions to US payrolls in the year through March. On Wednesday, Aug PPI final demand is expected to climb +3.3% y/y, unchanged from July, and Aug PPI ex-food and energy is expected to ease to +3.5% y/y from +3.7% y/y in July. On Thursday, Aug CPI is expected to climb to +2.9% y/y from +2.7% y/y in July, and Aug CPI ex-food and energy is expected to increase +3.1% y/y, unchanged from July. Also, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to fall by -3,000 to 234,000. On Friday, the University of Michigan Sep consumer sentiment index is expected to slip -0.2 to 58.0.
The markets are now pricing in a 15% chance of a 50 bp rate cut at the upcoming FOMC meeting on Sep 16-17, versus the previous expectations of a zero chance of that 50 bp rate cut. After the fully expected -25 bp rate cut at the Sep 16-17 meeting, the markets are now discounting an 81% chance of a second -25 bp rate cut at the Oct 28-29 meeting, up from a 54% chance as of late Thursday. The markets are now pricing in an overall -76 bp rate cut in the federal funds rate by year-end to 3.62% from the current 4.38% rate.
Regarding tariffs, a federal appeals court ruled late last month that President Trump exceeded his authority by imposing global tariffs without Congressional approval, but the court let the tariffs remain in place while appeals continue. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit Court said, "The statute bestows significant authority on the President to undertake a number of actions in response to a declared national emergency, but none of these actions explicitly include the power to impose tariffs, duties, or the like, or the power to tax." The case now appears to be headed to the Supreme Court for a final decision. According to Bloomberg Economics, the average US tariff will rise to 15.2% if rates are implemented as announced, up from 13.3% earlier, and significantly higher than the 2.3% in 2024 before the tariffs were announced.
Overseas stock markets on Monday settled higher. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.84%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.38%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 rose to a 2.5-week high and closed up +1.45%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) closed up by +5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell by -2.8 bp to 4.046%. The 10-year T-note yield dropped to a 5-month low Monday at 4.040% on carryover support from last Friday's weak US unemployment report that bolstered the outlook for Fed easing. Supply pressures are limiting gains in T-note prices as the Treasury will auction $119 billion of T-notes and T-bonds this week, beginning with Tuesday's $58 billion auction of 3-year T-notes.
Concerns about Fed independence are negatively impacting T-note prices due to President Trump's attempt to fire Fed Governor Cook and Stephen Miran's intention to hold a Fed Governor position while remaining technically in his White House role on the Council of Economic Advisors.
European government bond yields on Monday moved lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 1-month low of 2.638% and finished down -2.0 bp to 2.642%. The 10-year UK gilt yield dropped to a 3-week low of 4.604% and finished down -4.0 bp to 4.605%.
Swaps are discounting the chances at 1% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the September 11 policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
Chip stocks rallied on Monday to provide support to the overall market. Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +3%, and Broadcom (AVGO) closed up more than +3% and added to last Friday's +9% surge to lead chip stocks higher on news that the company is teaming up with OpenAI to make artificial intelligence accelerators. Also, Lam Research (LRCX) closed up more than +2%, and ASML Holding NV (ASML) closed up more than +1%. In addition, Nvidia (NVDA) and Analog Devices (ADI) closed up +0.77%.
AppLovin (APP) closed up more than +11% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the stock will replace Caesars Entertainment in the S&P 500 before the start of trading on September 22.
Rapport Therapeutics (RAPP) closed up more than +122% after reporting positive topline results from its RAP-219 treatment for focal onset seizures.
Forward Industries (FORD) closed up more than 54% after receiving $1.65 billion in cash and stablecoin commitments for a private investment in public equity offering to fund a Solana-focused digital asset treasury strategy.
EchoStar (SATS) closed up more than +18% after SpaceX's Starlink agreed to buy wireless spectrum from the company for about $17 billion.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) closed up more than +15% after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the stock would replace MarketAxess Holdings in the S&P 500 before the start of trading on September 22.
Premier Inc. (PINC) closed up more than +4% after Patient Square Capital was said to be exploring an acquisition of the company.
Uber Technologies (UBER) closed up more than +3% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after it partnered with Chinese autonomous vehicle maker Momenta to test robotaxis in Munich next year.
Oracle (ORCL) closed up more than +2% after Morgan Stanley raised its price target on the stock to $246 from $175.

Also, SBA Communications (SBAC) closed down more than -3% and AT&T (T) closed down more than -2%.
Summit Therapeutics (SMMT) closed down more than -25% unveiling new data that cast doubt on the future of its ivonescimab drug to treat lung cancer.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holding (NCLH) closed down more than -4% after announcing it will sell $1.025 billion of senior notes due 2031 and $1.025 billion of senior notes due 2033 in a private offering.
Dexcom (DXCM) closed down more than -3% after Oppenheimer & Co. downgraded the stock to perform from outperform.

Stocks Settle Higher as Bond Yields Fall and Chip Makers Climb

I want to add some cryptocurrency exposure to my portfolio, but I’m not too interested in owning Bitcoin directly.
There are dozens of ETFs available that can allow you to own Bitcoin.
Some are simply pure plays on Bitcoin, while others invest in companies behind the digital asset.
It wasn't too long ago that Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) was very difficult to invest in without owning the digital currency directly. But since the first Bitcoin ETFs were approved in early 2024, dozens of exchange-traded funds that invest in the digital currency or adjacent assets are available for investors to trade.
I personally don't own any Bitcoin in my portfolio right now, but I've been thinking about adding some, mainly for diversification purposes. With that in mind, here are two Bitcoin ETFs on my radar that I'm considering, and one that I'm absolutely going to avoid.

A pure-play Bitcoin ETF
The six largest Bitcoin ETFs on the market are all pure plays, also known as spot Bitcoin ETFs, meaning that they simply own Bitcoin and aim to track its price (net of investment fees) over time.
Of these, the largest and the one I'm considering is the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (NASDAQ: IBIT). And as you might expect, the fund holds just one asset -- about $84 billion in Bitcoin.
To be sure, there are other solid pure-play Bitcoin ETFs, but the iShares Bitcoin Trust has a low 0.25% expense ratio, which means that you'll pay $2.50 in fees for every $1,000 in invested assets. To be clear, this isn't a fee you have to directly pay, but it will be reflected in the fund's performance over time. Other pure-play Bitcoin ETFs have expense ratios as high as 1.5% (or even more), and this can have a big impact over a multi-year holding period.
A Bitcoin-adjacent ETF
Regardless of what happens with the price of Bitcoin over time, the cryptocurrency industry itself and the blockchain technology that powers much of it both have massive potential. So, another ETF I'm looking at is the ARK Next Generation Internet ETF (NYSEMKT: ARKW), an actively managed ETF run by Cathie Wood with $2.35 billion in assets.
Now, this fund does have some of its assets (6.4%, to be exact) invested directly in Bitcoin. But the main focus is businesses that focus on modern technology infrastructure. The fund's stated investment objectives include companies that operate in industries including cryptocurrencies, digital wallets, and smart contracts, among others.
Because of this, not all the ETF's portfolio companies are cryptocurrency plays. But among the 10 largest holdings, in addition to Bitcoin, you'll find leading crypto exchange Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN), Robinhood (NASDAQ: HOOD), which operates a large crypto trading platform, and stablecoin company Circle Internet Group (NYSE: CRCL).
The Ark Next Generation Internet ETF has a 0.82% expense ratio, which is higher than a pure-play Bitcoin ETF, but is about average for an actively managed fund.
A Bitcoin ETF you won't find in my portfolio
I'm a long-term investor, not a speculator. That's why you won't find any leveraged Bitcoin ETFs in my portfolio anytime soon. There are a few in the market, but the idea is that these funds use derivative securities to deliver twice the daily return of Bitcoin. So, if Bitcoin increases by 1% tomorrow, a 2X leveraged ETF should rise by 2%.
This might sound great, especially if you have a high conviction that Bitcoin is going to rise over time. But the key point to remember is that this fund is designed to double the daily returns of Bitcoin -- not long-term returns. And the mathematics of leveraged daily returns rarely work out over the long run.
To illustrate this, as of this writing, Bitcoin has increased by 18% year-to-date. But a popular leveraged Bitcoin ETF is up by just 1%. And not only are the mathematics not favorable, but these ETFs tend to have excessive expense ratios -- approaching 2% in some cases.
In a nutshell, leveraged ETFs are best left to day traders and professionals. If you want to invest in Bitcoin, just invest in Bitcoin -- or in the companies that transact in it.

Robinhood joins the big leagues
The company will officially join the S&P 500 index, effective before trading opens on Sept. 22, replacing Caesars Entertainment. The index regularly rebalances, adding and dropping companies. Stocks that get added usually get a boost on the news of their inclusion in the major index -- fund managers buy shares to match the index, creating a quick demand spike.
The inclusion comes after Robinhood missed out during the last rebalancing, leaving investors wondering when the company would make the cut. At the company's annual general meeting in June, a shareholder directly asked CEO Vladimir Tenev about plans for getting into the S&P 500. "It's a difficult thing to plan for," Tenev said. "I think it's one of those things that hopefully happens."
The retail trading darling finds its footing
Robinhood has helped spur an explosion in retail trading and continues to innovate and expand its product offerings, helping it boost its revenue in down markets when retail trading is quiet. The S&P 500 inclusion helps validate Robinhood in the eyes of many investors, and the move should bring more institutional interest.
Even though Robinhood's stock carries a pretty significant premium, I think the company is set to succeed.

Why Is Robinhood Markets Stock (HOOD) Skyrocketing Today?

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is up +0.35%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) is up +0.08%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.79%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU25) are up +0.35%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU25) are up +0.76%.
Stocks are climbing today on the prospect of a more accommodative Federal Reserve. The 10-year T-note yield fell to a 5-month low today of 4.04%. The markets have fully priced in a 25 bp rate cut by the Fed at next week's FOMC meeting and priced in a 10% chance for a 50 bp rate cut. However, this week's US Aug CPI and PPI reports will show how much room the Fed has to cut interest rates and support the job market. Stocks fell last Friday after the weaker-than-expected US Aug payroll report sparked concerns that the Fed was falling behind in supporting a rapidly cooling US labor market.

Weaker-than-expected trade news from China is negative for global growth prospects after China's Aug exports rose +4.4% y/y, weaker than expectations of +5.5% y/y. Also, Aug imports rose +1.3% y/y, weaker than expectations of +3.4% y/y.
Market focus this week will be on any trade or tariff news. On Tuesday, the BLS will release annual benchmark revisions to US payrolls in the year through March. On Wednesday, Aug PPI final demand is expected to climb +3.3% y/y, unchanged from July, and Aug PPI ex-food and energy is expected to ease to +3.5% y/y from +3.7% y/y in July. On Thursday, Aug CPI is expected to climb to +2.9% y/y from +2.7% y/y in July, and Aug CPI ex-food and energy is expected to increase +3.1% y/y, unchanged from July. Also, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to fall by -3,000 to 234,000. On Friday, the University of Michigan Sep consumer sentiment index is expected to slip -0.2 to 58.0.
The markets are now pricing in a 10% chance of a 50 bp rate cut at the upcoming FOMC meeting on Sep 16-17, versus the previous expectations of a zero chance of that 50 bp rate cut. After the fully expected -25 bp rate cut at the Sep 16-17 meeting, the markets are now discounting an 81% chance of a second -25 bp rate cut at the Oct 28-29 meeting, up from a 54% chance as of late Thursday. The markets are now pricing in an overall -76 bp rate cut in the federal funds rate by year-end to 3.62% from the current 4.38% rate.
Regarding tariffs, a federal appeals court ruled late last month that President Trump exceeded his authority by imposing global tariffs without Congressional approval, but the court let the tariffs remain in place while appeals continue. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit Court said, "The statute bestows significant authority on the President to undertake a number of actions in response to a declared national emergency, but none of these actions explicitly include the power to impose tariffs, duties, or the like, or the power to tax." The case now appears to be headed to the Supreme Court for a final decision. According to Bloomberg Economics, the average US tariff will rise to 15.2% if rates are implemented as announced, up from 13.3% earlier, and significantly higher than the 2.3% in 2024 before the tariffs were announced.
Overseas stock markets today are higher. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.61%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.38%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 rose to a 2.5-week high and closed up +1.45%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) are up by +3 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down by -1.3 bp to 4.061%. The 10-year T-note yield dropped to a 5-month low today at 4.044% on carryover support from last Friday's weak US unemployment report that bolstered the outlook for Fed easing. Supply pressures are limiting gains in T-note prices as the Treasury will auction $119 billion of T-notes and T-bonds this week, beginning with Tuesday's $58 billion auction of 3-year T-notes.
Concerns about Fed independence are negatively impacting T-note prices due to President Trump's attempt to fire Fed Governor Cook and Stephen Miran's intention to hold a Fed Governor position while remaining technically in his White House role on the Council of Economic Advisors.
European government bond yields today are moving lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 1-month low of 2.638% and is down -1.8 bp to 2.644%. The 10-year UK gilt yield dropped to a 3-week low of 4.605% and is down -2.5 bp to 4.620%.
Swaps are discounting the chances at 1% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the September 11 policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
Chip stocks are climbing today to provide support to the overall market. Broadcom (AVGO) is up more than +4% and added to last Friday's +9% surge to lead chip stocks higher and gainers in the S&P 500 on news that the company is teaming up with OpenAI to make artificial intelligence accelerators. Also, Lam Research (LRCX) is up more than +3% after the stock received a 30-day upside catalyst watch at Citigroup. In addition, Marvell Technology (MRVL) is up more than +2%, and Nvidia (NVDA), KLA Corp (KLAC), ASML Holding NV (ASML), ARM Holding NV (ARM), and Microchip Technology (MCHP) are up more than +1%.
AppLovin (APP) is up more than +10% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100 after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the stock will replace Caesars Entertainment in the S&P 500 before the start of trading on September 22.
Rapport Therapeutics (RAPP) is up more than +134% after reporting positive topline results from its RAP-219 treatment for focal onset seizures.
Forward Industries (FORD) is up more than 46% after receiving $1.65 billion in cash and stablecoin commitments for a private investment in public equity offering to fund a Solana-focused digital asset treasury strategy.
EchoStar (SATS) is up more than +15% after SpaceX's Starlink agreed to buy wireless spectrum from the company for about $17 billion.
