The Marine Systems segment designs and builds nuclear-powered submarines, surface combatants, and auxiliary ships for the United States Navy and Jones Act ships for commercial customers, as well as builds crude oil and product tankers, and container and cargo ships; provides maintenance, modernization, and lifecycle support services for navy ships; offers and program management, planning, engineering, and design support services for submarine construction programs. The Combat Systems segment manufactures land combat solutions, such as wheeled and tracked combat vehicles, Stryker wheeled combat vehicles, piranha vehicles, weapons systems, munitions, mobile bridge systems with payloads, tactical vehicles, main battle tanks, armored vehicles, and armaments; and offers modernization programs, engineering, support, and sustainment services. The Technologies segment provides information technology solutions and mission support services; mobile communication, computers, and command-and-control mission systems; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance solutions to military, intelligence, and federal civilian customers; cloud computing, artificial intelligence; machine learning; big data analytics; development, security, and operations; and unmanned undersea vehicle manufacturing and assembly services. General Dynamics Corporation GD posted strong first-quarter 2026 results, with earnings of $4.10 per share beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.68 by 11.41%. The bottom line also rose 12% from the year-ago quarter on solid operating execution.

Revenues of $13.48 billion topped the consensus mark of $12.70 billion by 6.15% and increased 10.3% year over year, supported by growth across all four operating segments and a sharp pickup in order activity that lifted quarterly book-to-bill to 2-to-1.

GD’s Segmental Performance
Marine Systems produced one of the sharpest improvements, supported by higher volume from Virginia- and Columbia-class submarine work and productivity gains across shipyards. The segment generated operating earnings of $316 million and improved operating margin to 7.3% in the quarter.
Aerospace delivered operating earnings of $493 million with a 15.0% margin, supported by improved performance and higher volume, and the business reported 38 Gulfstream aircraft deliveries in the period.
Combat Systems posted operating earnings of $310 million and a 13.6% margin, and the quarter included notable contract wins such as $730 million for various munitions and $450 million tied to the Advanced Reconnaissance Vehicle competition pre-production development phase.
Technologies generated operating earnings of $339 million with a 9.5% margin, aided by growth across both GDIT and Mission Systems and solid order flow during the quarter.
GD Delivers Broad-Based Top-Line Growth
The company’s first-quarter revenue increase was supported by contributions from each of its operating businesses. Aerospace benefited from higher manufacturing and services volume, while Marine Systems advanced on higher shipyard volume tied to key submarine programs. Combat Systems and Technologies also registered year-over-year increases, reflecting demand across platforms, munitions and mission-focused services.
That breadth matters for investors because it reduces reliance on any single end market. With each segment expanding, GD entered 2026 with a more balanced growth profile and multiple drivers supporting the consolidated top line.
Operational Highlights of GD
Profitability advanced alongside sales growth. Operating earnings increased year over year to $1.42 billion, and operating margin improved to 10.5%, indicating that incremental revenues are translating into better earnings power.
Below the operating line, earnings before income taxes rose to $1.37 billion, aided by a lower net interest expense compared with the prior-year quarter. Net earnings climbed to $1.13 billion, reflecting both stronger operating performance and improved overall cost and financing dynamics during the period.
GD’s Backlog
Order activity was a highlight of the quarter. GD booked $26.6 billion of orders, driving a consolidated book-to-bill ratio of 2-to-1. The defense segments collectively posted a 2.2-to-1 book-to-bill, while Aerospace delivered a 1.2-to-1 ratio, underscoring healthy demand across the portfolio.
Backlog expanded meaningfully, ending the quarter at $130.84 billion. Total estimated contract value, which includes management’s estimate of additional value in unfunded IDIQ contracts and unexercised options, reached $188.44 billion. This elevated contract coverage provides clearer revenue visibility and positions the company to sustain production and service activity as 2026 progresses.
Financial Condition of GD
Cash generation was another notable strength. Net cash provided by operating activities totaled $2.16 billion in the quarter, equal to 192% of net earnings, reflecting strong cash conversion and working-capital performance. After $203 million of capital expenditures, free cash flow came in at $1.95 billion.
Management continued returning cash to shareholders while maintaining liquidity. The company paid $405 million in dividends and repurchased $217 million of common stock during the quarter. GD ended the period with $3.65 billion in cash and equivalents, and net debt of $4.36 billion, supporting financial flexibility alongside ongoing capital deployment.

Exploring Analyst Estimates for General Dynamics (GD) Q1 Earnings, Beyond Revenue and EPS

Six weeks of active war in Iran and the Persian Gulf paused on April 8 when President Donald Trump agreed to a two-week ceasefire that he extended for an indefinite period on Tuesday. The pause will continue until "discussions are concluded," according to the president.
It's not 100% clear how much America has spent on the war so far, both on actual combat operations and on enforcing its blockade of Iran. The Trump administration won't answer that question. "We keep asking. They keep ignoring us," laments media outlet MS Now. But The Washington Post reports that Trump plans to ask Congress for an additional $80 billion to $100 billion in funding to cover the cost of the war.

And that's just to start.
A $1.5 trillion defense budget
For the government's fiscal 2026, which ends Sept. 30, Congress has authorized just over $890 billion in total spending on national defense. This week, the Pentagon announced it will request a sizable increase from that for fiscal 2027: It wants to lifting the total Defense Department budget to $1.5 trillion.
Obviously, that increase is well above the $80 billion to $100 billion tied directly to the current war. So where's all the extra money going, if not just to pay the bills for Trump's Iran expedition? Turns out, we actually know quite a bit on that score -- and it's good news for three essential defense stocks that are well positioned to profit from the increased defense spending: Boeing (NYSE: BA), Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT), and General Dynamics (NYSE: GD).
Boeing
Defense Department comptroller Jules W. Hurst III says the extra spending will primarily go toward "strengthening supply chains and supporting tens of thousands of small and medium-sized businesses" by acquiring new military hardware and replenishing and expanding munitions supplies. Specifically, 52% of the spending will go to buying "munitions, planes, tanks and ships."
Boeing would clearly benefit from the "planes" part of this target package. The Iran war's focus on sustaining operations on the far side of the world has highlighted the need for aerial refueling tankers to keep fighter jets, bombers, and even cargo planes fueled in flight. The Air Force's KC-135 Stratotankers are aging, however, (the first one flew in 1956), and are due to be replaced.
Boeing won a contract to begin replacing them with brand new KC-46A Pegasus tankers in 2010. In 2024, the Pentagon expanded its planned acquisition of Pegasus planes from 179 to 183, at a total cost of $34.7 billion. With extra funds in hand, the Pentagon will ask Boeing to increase Pegasus production in 2027, adding hundreds of millions of dollars, if not billions, to Boeing's backlog.
Lockheed Martin
One of Pegasus' primary missions is to keep F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter jets from Lockheed Martin full of fuel and flying. According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the Pentagon plans to eventually buy 2,470 F-35s at a total program cost (which includes both development and acquisition costs) of $446.6 billion. Each additional plane bought brings Lockheed $181 million closer to that figure.
It's good news for Lockheed, therefore, that the Pentagon's 2027 budget envisions nearly doubling F-35 production, from 47 planes produced in 2026 to 85 in 2027.
Put down your calculators: That's $15.4 billion for Lockheed.
General Dynamics
One of the Pentagon's biggest areas of investment under the new budget will be in shipbuilding. About $65.8 billion is earmarked for this effort, as the Navy aims to buy 18 new warships for the battle fleet, and also -- this is important -- 16 new support ships. The Navy will spend $8.7 billion more to improve infrastructure for building, repairing, and maintaining ships, investing in "seven private, four public and multiple 'Tier 2' private shipyards."
Historically, the Navy has split its shipbuilding contracts roughly 50-50 between General Dynamics and archrival Huntington Ingalls, both to ensure it has adequate construction capacity and to keep those contractors in competition to keep prices in check. That $65.8 billion will be a boon to both builders, but where I think the advantage shifts to General Dynamics is in its NASSCO shipbuilding division, which specializes in the construction not of warships but of support vessels, such as dry cargo/ammunition ships and fleet replenishment oilers (i.e., refueling ships).
If the 16 support ships to be built for the Navy take either of those forms, General Dynamics would be the logical choice to build them. Rumors that the Navy may invest in additional submarine tenders, destroyer tenders, minesweepers, and fire ships are less certain. Those contracts might go to Huntington Ingalls, or even to Lockheed Martin, which also builds a few ships for the Navy.
I'd still expect General Dynamics to win the bulk of this work -- and therefore the bulk of the $65.8 billion.

Huntington Ingalls Industries
Enforcing a naval blockade against a belligerent nation obviously requires naval warships to interdict maritime traffic and, when necessary, to sink or seize vessels that try to run the blockade. America has two dominant military shipbuilders supplying the Navy with warships: Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) and General Dynamics (NYSE: GD).
Of the two, Huntington Ingalls Industries is by far the smaller company. According to the latest data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, HII is valued at just under $15 billion, with $12.5 billion in annual revenue and $801 million in trailing-12-month profit. (General Dynamics is much larger, at $88 billion in market capitalization, $52.6 billion in sales, and $4.2 billion in profit).
And yet, size can be deceiving. Boston Consulting Group notes, for example, that Huntington Ingalls is responsible for building approximately 70% of the U.S. Navy fleet. Granted, this percentage is measured by tonnage afloat -- and HII builds all of the Navy's nuclear aircraft carriers, as well as about half its submarines, and a variety of other vessels including amphibious landing ships (LPDs, LHAs, and LHDs), national security cutters for the Coast Guard, and certain uncrewed underwater and surface vehicles (UUVs and USVs).
Measuring by tonnage, the consulting firm calls Huntington Ingalls "dominant" as a naval shipbuilder. That's saying something.
General Dynamics
General Dynamics builds the other half of the U.S. Navy submarine fleet, as well as most of the Navy's Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. The three supersized destroyers of the Zumwalt class, now discontinued but still in service, also came out of General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works. Likewise, the Navy's Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruisers (which are aging and due for retirement).
Between Huntington Ingalls' aircraft carriers and General Dynamics' destroyers (and the submarines presumably lurking nearby, protecting the blockade fleet, built by both companies), it's inconceivable that America could institute or maintain a naval blockade on Iran without the help of these two companies.
Why to invest in Huntington Ingalls and General Dynamics
From an investor's perspective, both stocks have merit. Valued based on trailing-12-month earnings, they trade at 24 times earnings for Huntington Ingalls, and 21 times for General Dynamics -- significantly below the average price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 30 for the S&P 500. Strong free cash flow (FCF) generation results in attractive multiples there as well, and indicates high quality of reported earnings. Valued based on price to FCF, Huntington becomes the cheaper choice with a P/FCF multiple of 18, while General Dynamics gets only a little more expensive at a P/FCF of 22.
Finally, for dividend investors, Huntington's current 1.5% dividend yield matches the average yield of the S&P 500; General Dynamics' yield of 2% beats it.
On growth, the advantage shifts back to Huntington Ingalls, with analysts forecasting an average of 15% earnings growth over the next five years, versus 7% for General Dynamics.
And I suspect investors can have confidence that these stocks will grow at or above expectations. These companies' products have proven indispensable for conducting the ongoing naval blockade of Iran, which would argue only for their prospects holding steady as the Navy maintains its current capabilities. In fact, the Navy had clearly telegraphed its intention to expand the fleet and buy even more ships from Huntington Ingalls and General Dynamics.
Presently sized at just 293 "battle force ships," the U.S. Navy is currently starting a five-year plan that should see the fleet grow to 300 ships by 2030, including delivery of the first new Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine, according to the Congressional Budget Office. After 2030, this plan will kick into high gear; the Pentagon will invest $1 trillion as the Navy phases out old hulls and buys 364 new ships over the next 30 years, growing the combined battle fleet to 381 ships.
A savvy investor might want to buy into these stocks before 2030 rolls around, and the Navy's plan becomes too obvious for Wall Street to miss.

2 Defense Contractors the Pentagon Keeps Calling On in the Iran War Era -- and What They Could Mean for 2030‑Focused Investors

In the latest trading session, General Dynamics (GD) closed at $320.74, marking a -1.47% move from the previous day. This move lagged the S&P 500's daily gain of 1.05%. Elsewhere, the Dow saw an upswing of 0.69%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq appreciated by 1.64%.
The stock of defense contractor has fallen by 5.98% in the past month, lagging the Aerospace sector's loss of 0.74% and the S&P 500's gain of 8.59%.
The investment community will be closely monitoring the performance of General Dynamics in its forthcoming earnings report. The company is scheduled to release its earnings on April 29, 2026. In that report, analysts expect General Dynamics to post earnings of $3.68 per share. This would mark year-over-year growth of 0.55%. Top Analyst Reports for Exxon Mobil, IBM & Citigroup

The Boeing Company BA incurred an adjusted loss of 20 cents per share in the first quarter of 2026, narrower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 95 cents. The bottom line improved from the year-ago quarter’s reported loss of 49 cents per share.
Including one-time items, the company reported a GAAP loss of 11 cents per share, narrower than the year-ago quarter’s reported loss of 16 cents.
BA’s Total Revenues
Revenues amounted to $22.22 billion, which outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $21.87 billion by 3.5%. The top line also surged 14% from the year-ago quarter’s reported figure of $19.5 billion.

BA’s Total Backlog
Backlog at the end of first-quarter 2026 totaled $694.7 billion, up from $521.3 billion recorded at the end of 2025.
BA’s Segmental Performances
Commercial Airplane: Revenues in this segment surged 13% year over year to $9.2 billion, driven by higher jet deliveries. The segment incurred an operating loss of $563 million compared with the year-ago quarter’s operating loss of $537 million.
During the quarter under review, Boeing delivered 143 commercial planes. The figure improved 10% year over year.
Boeing Defense, Space & Security (“BDS”): The segment recorded revenues of $7.6 billion, reflecting year-over-year growth of 21%. It generated an operating income of $233 million compared with the year-ago quarter’s figure of $155 million.
Global Services: The segment recorded revenues of $5.37 billion, reflecting year-over-year growth of 6%. This unit generated an operating income of $971 million compared with the year-ago quarter’s figure of $943 million.
BA’s Financial Condition
Boeing exited first-quarter 2026 with cash and cash equivalents of $9.44 billion and short-term and other investments of $11.46 billion. At the end of 2025, the company had cash and cash equivalents of $10.92 billion and short-term and other investments worth $18.49 billion.
Long-term debt amounted to $44.35 billion, down from $45.64 billion recorded at the end of 2025.
The company’s net cash used by operating activities in the first three months of 2026 was $0.18 billion compared with $1.62 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Boeing's Q1 Loss Narrower Than Estimates, Revenues Increase Y/Y

Legendary investor Warren Buffett advises to be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful. One way we can try to measure the level of fear in a given stock is through a technical analysis indicator called the Relative Strength Index, or RSI, which measures momentum on a scale of zero to 100. A stock is considered to be oversold if the RSI reading falls below 30.
In trading on Tuesday, shares of General Dynamics Corp (Symbol: GD) entered into oversold territory, hitting an RSI reading of 29.7, after changing hands as low as $323.97 per share. By comparison, the current RSI reading of the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) is 67.7. A bullish investor could look at GD's 29.7 RSI reading today as a sign that the recent heavy selling is in the process of exhausting itself, and begin to look for entry point opportunities on the buy side.
