Freeport-McMoRan Inc. engages in the mining of mineral properties in North America, South America, and Indonesia. It primarily explores for copper, gold, molybdenum, silver, and other metals. The company's assets include the Grasberg minerals district in Indonesia; Morenci, Bagdad, Safford, Sierrita, and Miami in Arizona; Chino and Tyrone in New Mexico; and Henderson and Climax in Colorado, North America, as well as Cerro Verde in Peru and El Abra in Chile. The company was formerly known as Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. and changed its name to Freeport-McMoRan Inc. in July 2014. Freeport-McMoRan Inc. was incorporated in 1987 and is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona.

Freeport-McMoRan Inc.’s FCX shares have gained 24.8% so far this year, fueled by strong earnings backed by higher copper prices amid concerns over tighter global supply and resilient demand. While sales volumes were lower, significantly higher realized copper prices boosted the company’s first-quarter earnings performance.
Freeport has outperformed the Zacks Mining - Non Ferrous industry’s rise of 9.5% and the S&P 500’s increase of 8.1% over the same period. Its peers, Southern Copper Corporation SCCO and BHP Group Limited BHP, have rallied 20.6% and 37%, respectively.

FCX stock slipped below its 50-day simple moving average (SMA) last Friday, pulled down by a retreat in copper prices. FCX has been trading above the 200-day SMA since late November 2025, suggesting a long-term uptrend. Following a golden crossover on July 8, 2025, the 50-day SMA is higher than the 200-day SMA, indicating a bullish trend.

Freeport’s Growth Actions to Drive Capacity & Production
Freeport continues to leverage its portfolio of high-quality copper assets, emphasizing disciplined execution and organic growth initiatives to strengthen its production profile. It has completed the evaluation of a large-scale expansion at El Abra in Chile to define a large sulfide resource that could potentially support a major mill project similar to the large-scale concentrator at Cerro Verde, with an estimated resource of approximately 20 billion recoverable pounds of copper.
In Arizona, FCX is progressing with pre-feasibility studies at its Safford/Lone Star operations, with completion targeted for 2026, to assess a sizable sulfide expansion opportunity. It has expansion opportunities at Bagdad in Arizona that can more than double the concentrator capacity of the operation. Technical and economic studies have revealed the potential to build concentrating facilities to boost copper production by 200-250 million pounds annually.
PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI) is developing the Kucing Liar ore body within the Grasberg district with a targeted ramp-up to commence in 2030. FCX completed studies in 2025 that showed an opportunity to increase Kucing Liar’s design capacity to 130,000 metric tons of ore per day and reserves by roughly 20% at low costs.
FCX’s Solid Financial Health & Capital Discipline Bode Well
FCX has a strong liquidity profile and generates substantial cash flows, providing ample flexibility to fund expansion projects, reduce debt and enhance shareholder returns. It generated solid operating cash flows of $5.6 billion in 2025. Cash flows provided by operations surged 36% year over year to around $1.5 billion in the first quarter of 2026. Freeport ended the first quarter with strong liquidity, including $3.7 billion in cash and cash equivalents, $3 billion in availability under the FCX revolving credit facility, and $1.5 billion in availability under the PT-FI credit facility.
At the end of the first quarter, Freeport had a net debt of $2.4 billion, excluding PTFI’s new downstream processing facilities. Its net debt is below its targeted range of $3-$4 billion. Freeport has a policy of distributing 50% of the available cash to its shareholders and the balance to either reduce debt or invest in growth projects. FCX has no significant debt maturities until 2027. Its long-term debt-to-capitalization is around 22.1% compared with 36.3% for Southern Copper and 29.3% for BHP Group.
FCX offers a dividend yield of roughly 0.5% at the current stock price. Its payout ratio is 14% (a ratio below 60% is a good indicator that the dividend will be sustainable). Backed by strong financial health, the company's dividend is perceived to be safe and reliable.
Elevated Copper Prices Augur Well for Freeport
Prices of copper, the backbone of electrification, were volatile yet mostly favorable last year due to global economic and trade uncertainties. Copper prices started 2026 on a strong note, underpinned by robust demand from China and the United States. Structural tailwinds, including electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy projects, data center growth and grid modernization, continue to boost copper consumption. Worries about tightening supply amid rising EV and infrastructure demand also supported the red metal. These factors led to prices surging to roughly $6.4 per pound in late January. Prices of the red metal were mostly volatile during February, largely trading near $6 per pound.
Copper prices came under pressure in March amid concerns about the impact of surging oil prices on the global economy due to the war in the Middle East, dragging down prices to a three-month low of around $5.3 per pound in late March. Prices rebounded in April on hopes of a de-escalation in the Iran war. Prices shot up to around $6.6 per pound in May amid robust demand in China and supply worries linked to the Middle East conflict. Copper surged to an all-time high near $6.7 per pound recently on supply woes. Prices have pulled back from that level and are currently hovering near $6.3 per pound. Inflation concerns stemming from an uptick in oil prices amid tensions in the Middle East and a strengthening dollar pressured the prices of the red metal.
Freeport’s average realized copper price climbed around 30% year over year to $5.78 per pound in the first quarter. Favorable prices are expected to continue to support its performance.
Higher Unit Costs May Pressure FCX’s Margins
Freeport faces headwinds from higher costs. Its outlook for the second quarter of 2026 suggests higher costs on a sequential basis. It expects unit net cash costs to rise to $2.24 per pound, while projecting a full-year average of roughly $1.95 (compared with $1.65 in 2025). The projected second-quarter unit cost reflects a roughly 98% year over year and 17% increase from the prior quarter. The uptick in costs reflects higher costs of energy and other consumables due to the Middle East conflict and persistent pressure on volumes. Higher costs are expected to weigh on the company's margins.
Volume Weakness a Drag on FCX’s Prospects
Freeport’s copper sales volumes tumbled approximately 25% year over year in the first quarter to 657 million pounds, and fell from 709 million pounds in the prior quarter. The downside primarily resulted from lower operating rates due to the temporary suspension of operations since the mud rush incident at the Grasberg Block Cave mine in Indonesia in September 2025.
While the company’s outlook for copper sales volumes for the second quarter of 2026 of 690 million pounds indicates a sequential improvement, it still suggests a 32% year-over-year decline. For full-year 2026, consolidated sales volume projections were revised lower to around 3.1 billion pounds of copper from the prior view of 3.4 billion pounds due to an expected delay in achieving full ramp-up of the Grasberg Block Cave mine. Lower sales volumes are expected to weigh on its top line.

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Friday closed down -2.64%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -1.35%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -4.77%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) fell -2.97%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) fell -5.09%.
Stock indexes sold off sharply on Friday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posting 2-week lows. Investors rotated out of AI-infrastructure and semiconductor companies and sold megacap technology stocks that earlier this week pushed US stock indexes to all-time highs. Technology stocks retreated amid long liquidation and profit-taking after Broadcom’s outlook for chip sales fell short of high expectations, raising concerns that the AI trade rally has been excessive.

Stock indexes added to their losses on Friday as bond yields soared on the stronger-than-expected US May payrolls report, bolstering speculation that the Fed’s next interest rate move will be a rate hike. The 10-year T-note yield rose to a 2-week high of 4.55%.
US May nonfarm payrolls rose +172,000, stronger than expectations of +88,000. Also, Apr nonfarm payrolls were revised upward to +179,000 from the previously reported +115,000. The May unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3%, right on expectations.
US May average hourly earnings rose +0.3% m/m and +3.4% y/y, right on expectations.
US Apr consumer credit increased by $20.733 billion, stronger than expectations of $17.670 billion.
Crude oil prices fell more than -2% on Friday, even as the US and Iran have made little progress in talks over an interim peace deal, with clashes between Israel and Hezbollah militants continuing in Lebanon. Iran insists on a ceasefire in Lebanon before accepting a US deal to extend the truce and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump said Thursday that negotiations with Iran are in the “final” stages without elaborating, while Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi earlier said there had been “no tangible progress” even though both sides continue to exchange messages via mediators.
The markets are discounting a 1% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
The generally favorable Q1 earnings season is winding down. As of Friday, 84% of the 496 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets settled lower on Friday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.68%. China's Shanghai Composite fell to a 7-week low and closed down -0.74%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average closed down -1.31%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Friday closed down -16.5 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield rose +6.9 bp to 4.542%. Sep T-note prices tumbled to a 2-week low on Friday, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 2-week high of 4.552%. T-notes retreated on Friday amid a stronger-than-expected increase in US May nonfarm payrolls and a sharp upside revision to April nonfarm payrolls, bolstering speculation that the next Fed move will be an interest rate increase.
European government bond yields moved higher on Friday. The 10-year German Bund yield climbed to a 2-week high of 3.051% and finished up +1.6 bp to 3.038%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +0.5 bp to 4.903%.
Eurozone Q1 GDP was revised downward to -0.2% q/q and +0.3% y/y from the previously reported +0.1% q/q and +0.8% y/y.
Swaps are discounting a 100% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on June 11.

Also, ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed down more than -12%, and Intel (INTC), Sandisk (SNDK), ON Semiconductor (ON), and Western Digital (WDC) closed down more than -10%. In addition, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed down more than -9%, and Applied Materials (AMAT), KLA Corp (KLAC), Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -8%. Finally, Broadcom (AVGO), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), and Microchip Technology (MCHP) closed down more than -7%, and ASML Holding NV (ASML) and Texas Instruments (TXN) closed down more than -6%.
The Magnificent Seven technology stocks fell sharply on Friday. Tesla (TSLA) and Nvidia (NVDA) closed down more than -6%, and Meta Platforms (META) closed down more than -5%. Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed down more than -11%, and MARA Holdings (MARA) and Riot Platforms (RIOT) closed down more than -10%. Also, Coinbase Global (COIN) closed down more than -7%, and Strategy (MSTR) closed down more than -6%.
Mining stocks sold off on Friday as gold, silver, and copper prices plunged. Hecla Mining (HL) closed down more than -12%, and Coeur Mining (CDE) closed down more than -11%. Also, Southern Copper (SCCO) closed down more than -10%, and Freeport McMoRan (FCX) closed down more than 9%. In addition, Anglogold Ashanti (AU) closed down more than -8%, and Newmont Corp (NEM) and Barrick Mining (B) closed down more than -7%.
Defensive consumer staple companies rallied on Friday amid the broader market's plunge. Clorox (CLX) closed up more than +5%, and Procter & Gamble (PG) closed up more than +4% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials. Also, Kimberly-Clark (KMB) and Colgate-Palmolive (CL) closed up more than +4%, and Coca-Cola (KO) and Tyson Foods (TSN) closed up more than +3%.
Guidewire Software (GWRE) closed down more than -9% after forecasting Q4 subscription and support revenue of $259 million to $265 million, the midpoint below the consensus of $263.6 million.
Lululemon Athletica (LULU) closed down more than -8% after cutting its 2027 net revenue forecast to $11 billion to $11.15 billion from a previous forecast of $11.35 billion to $11.50 billion, below the consensus of $11.49 billion.
DocuSign (DOCU) closed down more than -6% after forecasting a full-year adjusted gross margin of 81.5% to 82%, the midpoint below the consensus of 81.8%.
Fiserv (FISV) closed down more than -3% after BNP Paribas downgraded the stock to underperform from neutral with a price target of $46.
Cooper Cos (COO) closed up more than +8% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 net sales of $1.08 billion, better than the consensus of $1.05 billion.

IYM, FCX, ECL, APD: ETF Outflow Alert

Freeport-McMoRan Inc. FCX saw a decline in its average unit net cash cost per pound of copper in the first quarter of 2026 to $1.91 from $2.22 in the prior quarter. It also fell from $2.07 a year ago.
Freeport, however, is facing headwinds from higher costs in the second quarter. FCX’s outlook for the second quarter suggests higher costs on a sequential basis. It expects unit net cash costs to rise to $2.24 per pound, while projecting a full-year average of roughly $1.95 (compared with $1.65 in 2025).
The projected second-quarter unit cost reflects a roughly 98% year over year and 17% quarter over quarter increase. The uptick in costs reflects higher costs of energy and other consumables due to the Middle East conflict and persistent pressure on volumes. Higher costs are expected to weigh on the company's margins.
Freeport’s copper sales volumes tumbled approximately 25% year over year in the first quarter to 657 million pounds, and fell from 709 million pounds in the prior quarter. The downside primarily resulted from lower operating rates due to the temporary suspension of operations since the mud rush incident at the Grasberg Block Cave mine. While the company’s outlook for copper sales volumes for the second quarter of 690 million pounds indicates a sequential improvement, it still suggests a 32% year-over-year decline.
Among FCX’s peers, Southern Copper Corporation SCCO reported lower unit costs in the first quarter. Southern Copper’s operating cash cost per pound of copper, net of by-product revenue credits, fell by roughly 114% decline from the prior-year quarter. SCCO’s operating cash cost per pound of copper declined roughly 34% year over year in 2025.
BHP Group Limited BHP lowered its unit cost guidance for the Escondida operation to the band of $1-$1.2 per pound for fiscal 2026, reflecting by-product credits and strong operational performance. BHP also projects Copper South Australia’s unit cost between $1 and $1.5 per pound. Unit costs at BHP’s Spence operation are expected to be between $2.1 and $2.4 per pound for fiscal 2026.

Freeport-McMoRan has been benefiting significantly from the massive growth of AI-powered data centers. FCX is a leading copper mining entity. FCX’s mining operations are - North America copper mines, South America mining, Indonesia mining and Molybdenum. FCX’s copper production for 2025 was 3,383 million pounds. The document prepared by SGS Panamá Control Services will be publicly accessible. The project's future rests on these findings and the ultimate decision of President José Raúl Mulino.
With 3 billion tons of proven and probable mineral reserves, Cobre Panamá is one of the largest copper mines opened globally in the past decade. Production at Cobre Panamá has been halted since November 2023 and placed into a phase of Preservation and Safe Management. First Quantum Minerals (FQVLF) Soars 5.0%: Is Further Upside Left in the Stock?

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -0.14%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.27%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is down -0.34%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) are down -0.17%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) are down -0.38%.
Stock indexes are under pressure today after fresh US attacks on Iran boosted crude oil prices and fueled doubt over whether an end to the war is imminent. The US struck Iranian military targets for the second time this week, and Kuwait said it responded to Iranian missile and drone threats. Crude oil prices jumped more than +2% on the news.

However, stock index futures bounced off their lows amid Fed-friendly US economic news. The Apr core PCE price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, rose as expected. Also, April capital goods new orders unexpectedly declined, weekly jobless claims rose more than expected, and Q1 GDP was revised downward. The 10-year T-note yield gave up an early advance and is down -2 bp to 4.46%.
US weekly initial unemployment claims rose by +5,000 to 215,000, showing a weaker labor market than expectations of 211,000.
US Apr personal spending rose +0.5% m/m, right on expectations. Apr personal income was unchanged m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.4% m/m.
The US Apr core PCE price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, rose +3.3% y/y, right on expectations and the largest increase in 2.5 years.
US Apr capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts unexpectedly fell -1.1% m/m versus expectations of a +0.4% m/m increase and the biggest decline in a year.
US Q1 GDP was revised downward to +1.6% (q/q annualized), weaker than expectations of no change at +2.0%. Q1 personal consumption was revised lower to +1.4% from the previously reported +1.6%, and the Q1 core PCE price index was revised upward to a 3-year high of +4.4% from the previously reported +4.3%.
Hawkish Fed comments are also weighing on stocks and bonds. Fed Governor Lisa Cook said inflation is headed in the wrong direction and she would be prepared to raise interest rates if that persists. Also, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari said US consumer prices are still "much too high" and that bringing down inflation remains his top priority.
Crude oil prices are up more than +2% today after US forces shot down four Iranian drones fired at a commercial ship and hit a launch site near the Strait of Hormuz. Also, the US Treasury added Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority to its Iran-related sanctions list to prevent Iran from profiting from vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz by charging tolls. In addition, Israel stepped up attacks on Lebanon and said its ground forces would move further into the country, potentially complicating US-Iran talks on an interim peace deal.
The markets are discounting a 3% chance of a -25 bp FOMC rate cut at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
The generally favorable Q1 earnings season is winding down. As of today, 83% of the 479 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.46%. China's Shanghai Composite recovered from a 5-week low and closed up +0.12%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average closed down -0.47%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) today are up +4 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down -1.4 bp to 4.469%. T-note prices recovered from early losses and moved higher on Fed-friendly economic news. Weekly jobless claims rose more than expected, Apr core capital goods orders unexpectedly declined, Q1 GDP was revised lower, and the Apr core PCE price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, rose as expected.
T-notes initially moved lower today from a +2% jump in WTI crude oil prices, which raised inflation expectations. Also, hawkish comments from Fed Governor Lisa Cook and Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari undercut T-note prices, as they expressed concern about persistently high inflation. In addition, supply pressures are negative for T-notes as the Treasury will auction $44 billion of 7-year T-notes later today.
European government bond yields are moving lower today. The 10-year German Bund yield is down -0.1 bp to 2.986%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down -1.5 bp to 4.843%.
The Eurozone May economic sentiment indicator rose +0.3 to 93.5, stronger than expectations of no change at 93.0.
ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane said the impact of the Iran war will take longer to show in the labor market, and the "second round" of the energy shock on the Eurozone will persist for a while.
Swaps are discounting a 92% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on June 11.
US Stock Movers
Mining stocks are faltering today with gold prices dropping to a 2-month low and silver prices falling to a 4-week low. Newmont Corp (NEM), Hecla Mining (HL), and Coeur Mining (CDE) are down more than -3%, and Anglogold Ashanti (AU) is down more than -2%. Also, Freeport McMoRan (FCX) and Barrick Mining (B) are down more than -1%.
Cryptocurrency-related stocks are falling today, with Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) down more than -3% to a 6-week low. Strategy (MSTR) is down more than -6% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and MARA Holdings (MARA) and Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) are down more than -4%. Also, Coinbase Global (COIN) is down more than -1%.
Drone-related stocks are rallying today after the Wall Street Journal reported the Trump administration is exploring funding deals with a group of drone companies. Unusual Machines (UMAC) is up more than +47%, and Red Cat (RCAT) is up more than +22%. Also, AIRO Group Holdings (AIRO) is up more than +13%, and AeroVironment (AVAV) and Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (KTOS) are up more than +11%.
Photronics (PLAB) is down more than -31% after forecasting Q3 adjusted EPS of 39 cents to 45 cents, weaker than the consensus of 54 cents.
Symbotic (SYM) is down more than -9% after Softbank Group is said to sell 5.6 million shares of its holdings of SYM in an unregistered block trade between $51 and $53.63 a share.
HP Inc. (HPQ) is down more than -2% after lowering the upper end of its full-year EPS estimate to $2.90-$3.10 from a previous view of $2.90-$3.20, citing rising memory and storage costs.
Snowflake (SNOW) is up more than +33% after reporting Q1 revenue of $1.39 billion, better than the consensus of $1.33 billion and raising its 2027 product revenue forecast to $5.84 billion from a previous estimate of $5.66 billion, well above the consensus of $5.68 billion.
Dollar Tree (DLTR) is up more than +16% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 adjusted EPS of $1.74, stronger than the consensus of $1.55, and raising its 2027 adjusted EPS estimate to $6.70 to $7.10 from a previous estimate of $6.50 to $6.90, above the consensus of $6.69.
Agilent (A) is up more than +15% after raising its full-year revenue forecast to $7.39 billion-$7.49 billion from a previous estimate of $7.3 billion-$7.5 billion yuan, above the consensus of $7.39 billion.
Best Buy (BBY) is up more than +13% after forecasting Q2 comparable sales up +1.00%, stronger than the consensus of down -0.32%.
Heico (HEI) is up more than +12% after reporting Q2 net sales of $1.38 billion, well above the consensus of $1.25 billion.
Caesars Entertainment (CZR) is up more than +1% after Fertitta Entertainment agreed to acquire the company for $17.6 billion, or $31 a share.
