Freeport-McMoRan Inc. engages in the mining of mineral properties in North America, South America, and Indonesia. It primarily explores for copper, gold, molybdenum, silver, and other metals. The company's assets include the Grasberg minerals district in Indonesia; Morenci, Bagdad, Safford, Sierrita, and Miami in Arizona; Chino and Tyrone in New Mexico; and Henderson and Climax in Colorado, North America, as well as Cerro Verde in Peru and El Abra in Chile. The company was formerly known as Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. and changed its name to Freeport-McMoRan Inc. in July 2014. Freeport-McMoRan Inc. was incorporated in 1987 and is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona.

The balance sheet is generally solid: assets and equity are growing, and liabilities are not showing any alarming acceleration. Overall, the fundamentals support the current price more than they justify a significant further increase, so the target should be adjusted only moderately downward.

Freeport’s Growth Pipeline Supports Production Gains
Freeport continues to leverage its portfolio of high-quality copper assets, emphasizing disciplined execution and organic growth initiatives to strengthen its production profile. FCX has completed the evaluation of a large-scale expansion at El Abra in Chile to define a large sulfide resource that could potentially support a major mill project similar to the large-scale concentrator at Cerro Verde, with an estimated resource of approximately 20 billion recoverable pounds of copper. The expansion is expected to result in the addition of more than 700 million pounds of copper production annually.
In Arizona, FCX is progressing with pre-feasibility studies at its Safford/Lone Star operations, with completion targeted for 2026, to assess a sizable sulfide expansion opportunity. It has expansion opportunities at Bagdad in Arizona that can more than double the concentrator capacity of the operation. Technical and economic studies have revealed the potential to build concentrating facilities to boost copper production by 200-250 million pounds annually.
PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI) is developing the Kucing Liar ore body within the Grasberg district with a targeted ramp-up expected to commence in 2030. Studies completed by FCX in 2025 show an opportunity to increase Kucing Liar’s design capacity to 130,000 metric tons of ore per day and reserves by roughly 20% at low costs.
FCX’s Financial Strength Enables Capital Flexibility
FCX has a strong liquidity profile and generates substantial cash flows, providing ample flexibility to fund expansion projects, reduce debt and enhance shareholder returns. It generated solid operating cash flows of $5.6 billion in 2025. Cash flows provided by operations were around $2 billion in the second quarter of 2026. Freeport ended the second quarter with strong liquidity, including $4.1 billion in cash and cash equivalents, $3 billion in availability under the Freeport revolving credit facility, and $1.5 billion in availability under the PT-FI credit facility.
At the end of the second quarter, Freeport had a net debt of $2.1 billion, excluding PTFI’s new downstream processing facilities. Its net debt is below its targeted range of $3-$4 billion. Freeport has a policy of distributing 50% of the available cash to its shareholders and the balance to either reduce debt or invest in growth projects. FCX has no significant debt maturities until 2027. Its long-term debt-to-capitalization is around 20.2% compared with 38.6% for Southern Copper and 30.3% for BHP Group.
FCX offers a dividend yield of roughly 0.4% at the current stock price. Its payout ratio is 13% (a ratio below 60% is a good indicator that the dividend will be sustainable). Backed by strong financial health, the company's dividend is perceived to be safe and reliable.
Freeport Stands to Gain From Favorable Copper Prices
Copper prices continue to show strength driven by robust demand from China and the United States. Structural tailwinds, including electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy projects, artificial intelligence data center growth and grid modernization, continue to boost copper consumption. Worries about tightening supply amid rising EV and infrastructure demand aided the red metal. Supply risks stem from operational issues in top producer Chile, along with export bans on copper concentrates from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Copper surged to an all-time high near $6.9 per pound recently on tariff-related uncertainties and supply tightness. Imports to the United States have surged ahead of a potential tariff announcement by the Trump administration. Copper prices are currently hovering near $6.5 per pound and up more than 40% year over year.
Freeport’s average realized copper price climbed around 36% year over year to $6.17 per pound in the second quarter. Higher prices are expected to continue to support its performance.
Higher Costs Threaten to Squeeze FCX’s Margins
Freeport faces headwinds from higher costs. Its second-quarter unit net cash costs jumped 74% year over year to $1.97 per pound due to lower copper volumes. Freeport expects unit net cash costs of $2 per pound for the third quarter, while projecting a full-year average of roughly $1.9 (compared with $1.65 in 2025). The projected third-quarter unit cost reflects a roughly 43% year-over-year increase. The uptick in costs reflects higher costs of energy and other consumables due to the Middle East conflict and persistent pressure on volumes. Higher costs are expected to weigh on the company's margins.
Volume Weakness a Drag on FCX’s Prospects
Freeport’s copper sales volumes tumbled approximately 30% year over year in the second quarter to 710 million pounds. The downside primarily resulted from lower operating rates during the phased ramp-up of the Grasberg Block Cave mine in Indonesia following the mud rush incident in September 2025.
While the company’s third-quarter outlook for copper sales volumes of 750 million pounds indicates a sequential improvement, it suggests a 23% year-over-year decline. The company, in April 2026, lowered its consolidated sales volume projections for full-year 2026 to around 3.1 billion pounds of copper from the prior view of 3.4 billion pounds due to an expected delay in achieving full ramp-up of the Grasberg Block Cave mine. Lower sales volumes are expected to weigh on its top line.
FCX’s Earnings Estimates Moving Higher
Freeport’s earnings estimates have been going up over the past 60 days. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2026 and 2027 earnings has been revised higher over the same time frame.

FCX's Shares Up 20% in 6 Months: What Should Investors Do Now?

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) closed down -0.58% on Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.60%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -1.08%. E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) fell -0.61%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) fell -1.07%.
Stock indexes settled lower on Thursday, with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrials dropping to 5-week lows. Soaring energy prices pushed global bond yields sharply higher on Thursday, weighing on stocks. WTI crude oil surged more than +6% on Thursday to a 3.5-month high amid fears that the US-Iran war will persist, increasing inflation risks and prompting the world’s central banks to keep raising interest rates. The 10-year UK Gilt yield jumped to a 19-year high today of 5.38%, the 10-year German Bund yield surged to a 17-year high of 3.51%, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 2.75-year high of 4.96%.

Stocks added to their losses on Thursday, and T-note yields climbed further after US Aug PPI rose more than expected, signaling persistent price pressures, and after weekly jobless claims remained low, signaling labor market strength.
US weekly initial unemployment claims fell -1,000 to 206,000, close to expectations of 205,000 and signaling a stable labor market.
US Aug PPI final demand rose +5.4% y/y, stronger than expectations of +5.3% y/y. Aug PPI ex-food and energy rose +4.6% y/y, right on expectations.
US Aug existing home sales fell -2.0% m/m to a 14-month low of 3.98 million, right on expectations.
The escalating trade war between the US and Canada is also weighing on market sentiment. On Tuesday, Canada imposed tariffs of 15% to 50% on hundreds of US goods in retaliation for the US action last month to impose 50% tariffs on $20 billion of imports from Canada. The US responded by moving to block imports of some Canadian products and slapping new tariffs on others, as well as seeking to bar Canadian companies from selling to US government contractors.
Oct WTI crude oil prices (CLV26) surged more than +6% on Thursday to a 3.5-month high. Crude prices are climbing after Iran said that it is ready for a more intense war and will escalate counterstrikes if the US continues attacking its territory and infrastructure. The prospect of a lengthy conflict that limits crude supplies from the Middle East is underpinning crude oil prices. Crude oil prices added to their gains on Thursday after Saudi Arabia told OPEC that its crude production in August fell to 6.238 million bpd, the lowest since 1990.
The markets are discounting a 75% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on September 15-16.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Thursday. The Euro Stoxx 50 dropped to a 6-week low and closed down -0.67%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.43%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed up +0.20%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ6) closed down by -23 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +10.7 bp to 4.948%. T-notes tumbled to a 2.75-year nearest futures low on Thursday, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 2.75-year high of 4.963%. T-notes sold off as crude oil prices surged, which boosted inflation expectations. WTI crude oil rose more than +6% on Thursday to a 3.5-month high, lifting the 10-year breakeven inflation rate to a 3.25-month high of 2.419%.
On the positive side for T-notes was the decline in US Aug existing home sales to a 14-month low. T-notes also found support on strong demand for the Treasury’s $22 billion auction of 30-year T-bonds that had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.61, well above the 10-auction average of 2.40.
European government bond yields moved sharply higher on Thursday. The 10-year German bund yield jumped to a 17-year high of 3.508% and finished up +5.7 bp to 3.501%. The 10-year UK gilt yield soared to a 19-year high of 5.376% and finished up +11.2 bp to 5.374%.
The ECB, as expected, raised the deposit facility rate by 25 bp to 2.50% and said inflation will stay above 2% for an "extended period."
The ECB raised its 2026 Eurozone GDP forecast to +0.9% from a prior forecast of +0.8%, and kept its 2026 inflation ex-food and energy forecast unchanged at 2.5%.
Markets are discounting a 97% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at the ECB’s next meeting on October 29.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks retreated on Thursday, pressuring the broader market. CoreWeave (CRWV), Intel (INTC), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -5%, and Micron Technology (MU) and Western Digital (WDC) closed down more than -4%. Also, ARM Holdings (ARM), SanDisk (SNDK), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), KLA Corp (KLAC), Marvell Technology (MRVL), and Applied Materials (AMAT) closed down more than -3%, and Nvidia(NVDA), ASML Holding NV (ASML), and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed down more than -2%.
Copper-producing stocks are falling today, with copper prices down more than -4% after Reuters reported that the White House has not yet made a decision on refined copper tariffs as it weighs concerns of higher prices raising manufacturing costs against the potential benefits of encouraging more domestic mining. Southern Copper (SCCO) closed down more than -7%, and Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) closed down more than -6%. Also, Rio Tinto Plc (RIO) closed down more than -4%, and Newmont Corp (NEM) closed down more than -2%.
Home builders and suppliers moved lower on Thursday after the 10-year T-note yield jumped to a 2.75-year high, pushing up mortgage rates and weighing on housing demand. Lennar (LEN), KB Home (KBH), and Builders Firstsource (BLDR) closed down more than -3%. Also, DR Horton (DHI) and Pulte Group (PHM) closed down more than -2%, and Toll Brothers (TOL) and Home Depot (HD) closed down more than -1%.
Cooper Cos (COO) closed down more than -14% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q3 net sales of $1.07 billion, below the consensus of $1.10 billion, and cutting its full-year revenue forecast to $4.23 billion to $4.25 billion from a previous forecast of $4.29 billion to $4.32 billion, weaker than the consensus of $4.31 billion.
American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) closed down more than -13% after reporting Q2 comparable sales rose +6.00%, weaker than the consensus of +6.47%.
FactSet Research Systems (FDS) closed down more than -5% after OpenAI said it’s releasing ChatGPT for Financial Services, a new tool for investment bankers and equity researchers.
AeroVironment (AVAV) closed up more than +4% after reporting Q1 revenue of $480.5 million, stronger than the consensus of $455.8 million.
Apple (AAPL) closed up more than +3% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after analysts were generally positive about the company’s new iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone.

T-notes tumbled to a 2.75-year nearest futures low, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 2.75-year high of 4.928%. T-notes are under pressure from higher crude oil prices, which are boosting inflation expectations. WTI crude oil is up more than +3% today at a 3.5-month high, lifting the 10-year breakeven inflation rate to a 3.25-month high of 2.408%. Supply pressures are also weighing on T-notes as the Treasury will auction $22 billion of 30-year T-bonds later today. T-notes added to their losses today after Aug PPI rose more than expected.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield climbed to a new 15-year high of 3.495% and is up +4.8 bp to 3.492%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose to a 19-year high of 5.362% and is up +9.7 bp to 5.358%.
The ECB, as expected, raised the deposit facility rate by 25 bp to 2.50% and said inflation will stay above 2% for an "extended period."
The ECB raised its 2026 Eurozone GDP forecast to +0.9% from a prior forecast of +0.8%, and kept its 2026 inflation ex-food and energy forecast unchanged at 2.5%.
Markets are discounting a 77% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at the ECB’s next meeting on October 29.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks are sliding today, pressuring the broader market. CoreWeave (CRWV), Intel (INTC), and Lam Research (LRCX) are down more than -4%, and Micron Technology (MU), SanDisk (SNDK), and Western Digital (WDC) are down more than -3%. Also, ARM Holdings (ARM), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Applied Materials (AMAT) are down more than -2%, and Nvidia(NVDA) is down more than 2% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials.
Copper-producing stocks are falling today, with copper prices down more than -4% after Reuters reported that the White House has not yet made a decision on refined copper tariffs as it weighs concerns of higher prices raising manufacturing costs against the potential benefits of encouraging more domestic mining. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) is down more than -7%, and Southern Copper (SCCO) is down more than -6%. Also, Rio Tinto Plc (RIO) is down more than -4%, and Newmont Corp (NEM) is down more than -2%.
Home builders and suppliers are retreating today after the 10-year T-note yield jumped to a 2.75-year high, pushing up mortgage rates and weighing on housing demand. Lennar (LEN) is down more than -4%, and DR Horton (DHI), Pulte Group (PHM), KB Home (KBH), and Builders Firstsource (BLDR) are down more than -3%. Also, Toll Brothers (TOL) is down more than -2%.
AeroVironment (AVAV) is up more than +10% to lead drone makers higher after reporting Q1 revenue of $480.5 million, stronger than the consensus of $455.8 million. Also, Red Cat Holdings (RCAT) is up more than +3%, and Defiance Drone and Modern Warfare ETF (JEDI), Aevex Corp (AVEX), Unusual Machines (UMAC), and Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (KTOS) are up more than +2%.
Cybersecurity stocks are climbing today, a supportive factor for stocks. Fortinet (FTNT) and Okta (OKTA) are up more than +2%, and CrowdStrike Holdings (CRWD), Palo Alto Networks (PANW), and SentinelOne (S) are up more than +1%.
American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) is down more than -14% after reporting Q2 comparable sales rose +6.00%, weaker than the consensus of +6.47%.
Cooper Cos (COO) is down more than -13% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q3 net sales of $1.07 billion, below the consensus of $1.10 billion, and cutting its full-year revenue forecast to $4.23 billion to $4.25 billion from a previous forecast of $4.29 billion to $4.32 billion, weaker than the consensus of $4.31 billion.
Driven Brands Holdings (DRVN) is down more than -3% after Bank of America Global Research double-downgraded the stock to underperform from buy with a price target of $12.
Kymera Therapeutics (KYMR) is up more than +1% after Wolfe Research upgraded the stock to outperform from peer perform with a price target of $180.

Stocks Retreat as 10-year T-note Yield Reaches New 2.75-year High

In trading on Thursday, metals & mining shares were relative laggards, down on the day by about 3.3%. Helping drag down the group were shares of Ero Copper, off about 7.7% and shares of Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold down about 7.1% on the day.
Also lagging the market Thursday are precious metals shares, down on the day by about 2.9% as a group, led down by Gold.com, trading lower by about 7.7% and Hudbay Minerals, trading lower by about 7.6%.

Based in Phoenix, AZ, Freeport-McMoRan Inc., formerly Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., is engaged in mineral exploration and development; mining and milling of copper, gold, molybdenum and silver; as well as the smelting and refining of copper concentrates. The company conducts its operations primarily through its principal operating subsidiaries, PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI), Freeport Minerals Corporation and Atlantic Copper. PT Freeport Indonesia’s principal asset is Papua, Indonesia-based Grasberg mine, which contains the world’s largest copper and gold reserves.
In December 2018, the company completed the transaction with the Indonesian government regarding PT Freeport Indonesia’s long-term mining rights and ownership. Freeport currently has a 48.76% ownership interest in PT-FI and it manages the mining operations. Freeport’s economic interest in PT-FI was around 81% prior to Jan. 1, 2023.
Freeport's mining operations are North America copper mines, South America mining, Indonesia mining and Molybdenum. Freeport’s copper production for 2025 was 3,383 million pounds. North America, South America and Indonesia accounted for roughly 39%, 31% and 30% of its copper production, respectively, in 2025.
In North America, Freeport operates seven open-pit copper mines – Morenci, Bagdad, Sierrita, Miami and Safford located in Arizona, and Chino and Tyrone in New Mexico. The company also has molybdenum mines, Henderson (underground) and Climax (open-pit), in Colorado. All of these operations are wholly owned by Freeport, except Morenci, which is under a joint venture with Freeport holding a 72% stake. In South America, the company has two operating copper mines – Cerro Verde (55.66% stake) in Peru and El Abra (51%) in Chile.
Bottom Line

It is also well-positioned to benefit from automotive electrification, which is positive for copper, as electric vehicles are copper-intensive. The company's efforts to reduce debt are also encouraging. Solid financial health also bodes well. However, weak copper volumes and higher unit costs may hurt its performance. Sizable capital spending is also likely to impact free cash flow generation.
The stock is up 11.25% over the past four weeks, and no earnings estimate has gone lower in the past two months, compared to 10 higher, for fiscal 2026. The consensus estimate has moved up as well.

The S&P 500 is the most widely followed U.S. stock market index for a couple of reasons. First, it's made up of 500 companies from 11 different sectors of the economy, so it's highly diversified. Second, it has very strict entry criteria: its members must maintain a market capitalization of at least $22.7 billion and be profitable. But even after those boxes are ticked, a special committee ultimately decides which companies make the cut.
The S&P is weighted by market capitalization, so the largest companies in the index have a much higher representation than the smallest. Therefore, despite its diversified composition, the information technology sector has a massive weighting of 36.6% because it's home to five companies worth $1 trillion or more (Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Broadcom, and Micron Technology).

The technology sector is exerting a particularly strong influence on the performance of the S&P 500 right now, thanks to the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, which began to gain momentum when OpenAI's ChatGPT application surpassed 100 million users in early 2023. Southern Copper Corporation SCCO delivered a solid 116.9% year-over-year surge in the operating cash flow in the first six months of 2026 to $3.68 billion. Southern Copper’s strong cash generation is driven by higher sales and a $718.5-million reduction in operating assets and liabilities requirements.
The company also benefited from its cash cost decrease, which was driven by a 68.2% year-over-year rise in by-product revenue credits. Cash and cash equivalents stood at $5.67 billion as of June 30, 2026, while capital investments totaled $864.7 million.
Over the past few years, Southern Copper has successfully lowered its debt levels. Long-term debt was $7.99 billion at the end of June 30, 2026, following the issuance of $1.25 billion of 10-year senior unsecured notes carrying a 5.35% interest rate. The proceeds are intended primarily to support the Tía María project and other capital needs of the company’s Peruvian operations.
In July 2026, the board authorized a $1.10-per-share cash dividend plus a stock dividend of 0.012 shares per common share, reflecting continued capital returns alongside higher investment spending.
The company’s copper production declined 3.8% year over year to 461,206 tons in the first half of 2026 due to a decrease in production at the company’s Peruvian operations. Despite the year-to-date fall in production, the company has slightly hiked its 2026 copper production outlook to 917,000 tons from the initially stated 910,000 tons.
The figure still implies a 5% year-over-year decline. Nonetheless, Southern Copper maintains a strong long-term outlook with production expected to increase to 1.6 million tons by 2033 or 2034.
Moreover, copper prices are currently near $6.6 per pound, up 47% in a year, supported by tight global supply and strong demand. Along with SCCO, its peers Teck Resources Ltd TECK and Freeport-McMoRan Inc. FCX are gaining from this rise in copper prices. Higher prices for molybdenum, zinc and silver will also aid growth.
The rally in metal prices this year and its ongoing cost control efforts position the company for further cash flow gains in the months ahead.
Southern Copper Peers’ Cash Flow Performance
Teck Resources’ cash flow from operating activities improved to C$2.74 billion ($1.98 billion) in the first half of 20206 from a cash outflow of C$427 million ($309 million). Teck Resources ended the second quarter 2026 with C$6.05 billion ($4.38 billion) in cash and cash equivalents, and liquidity of C$10.3 billion ($7.5 billion).
Teck Resources’ copper segment’s revenues surged 85% year over year, driven by higher copper prices and sales volumes. This pushed the company’s top line to $2.6 billion, marking a 78% year-over-year rise.
Freeport-McMoRan’s cash flow from operations increased to $3.68 billion in the first half from $1.69 billion in the prior year. Freeport-McMoRan ended the second quarter with strong liquidity, including $4.1 billion in cash and cash equivalents, $3 billion in availability under the Freeport revolving credit facility, and $1.5 billion in availability under the PT-FI credit facility.
However, revenues declined 7.3% year over year to $7.03 billion in the second quarter of 2026. Freeport-McMoRan’s copper production fell 18.4% year over year to 786 million pounds in the reported quarter.
SCCO’s Price Performance, Valuations & Estimates
Southern Copper shares have gained 40.7% year to date compared with the Zacks Mining - Non Ferrous industry’s rise of 28.9%. During this time, the Basic Materials sector has risen 22.1% and the S&P 500 has rallied 13.2%.
The Southern Copper stock is currently trading at a forward 12-month earnings multiple of 27.80X, which is a premium to the industry average of 23.62X.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Southern Copper’s 2026 sales is $16.86 billion, indicating a 25.6% year-over-year jump. The consensus mark for the year’s earnings is pegged at $7.59 per share, suggesting a rally of 44.8%.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2027 sales implies an 11.7% year-over-year dip. The same for earnings suggests a fall of 8.5%.
Earnings estimates for 2026 have moved 0.4% south over the past 60 days, while the same for 2027 have moved down 0.1% over the past 60 days.

Can Southern Copper Sustain Its Strong Operating Cash Flow Growth?

The price of copper recently hit an all-time high, helping lift the stock of copper miner Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE: FCX). For short-term traders, that kind of news might be a cause for caution. But unless you have a strong view that copper will decline markedly from here, the stock continues to look highly attractive. Here's why.
Copper soars to a new high
The chart below shows just how well the metal has performed in recent years and the strength of its recent run.

The strength in the copper price supports the case for Freeport-McMoRan stock even if you take an agnostic view of the price of copper. For example, management always lays out its earnings and cash flow sensitivities to copper prices on its earnings calls. Here are the latest estimates for the 2027/2028 period.

To put them into context, the current price of copper is $6.51, which translates to about $18.25 billion in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and $14 billion in operating cash flow (OCF). Based on these figures, Freeport-McMoRan will trade on an enterprise value, or EV (market cap plus net debt), to an EBITDA valuation of 6.8 times in 2027/2028. Moreover, capital spending of roughly $4.5 billion (in line with Wall Street analyst estimates) and free cash flow (FCF) of about $9.5 billion will put it at 11.2 times FCF in the same period.
Both are very attractive multiples. For example, here's a look at the commonly used EV/EBITDA valuation multiple: The 6.8x value is clearly lower than the average EBITDA multiple of 9.01x over the last decade.
More than just a valuation story
Valuation and numbers are one thing, but most investors want to believe in them, including the price of copper and the company's ability to profit from it. The case for copper combines an ongoing shift in structural demand for copper, following an extended period of underinvestment in global copper mines, with a deterioration in copper ore grades.
The increase in demand comes from the metal's exposure to the electrification-of-everything megatrend, which includes electric vehicles, renewable energy, AI data centers, and the grid networks needed to power them.
As this explosive demand has grown, it's become increasingly difficult for miners to secure greenfield mining permissions before even considering production. According to some estimates, it can take almost 18 years for a discovery to become a producing mine.
Why Freeport-McMoRan stock is attractive
All of this raises the question of why Freeport-McMoRan is well-placed to benefit. The answer is threefold. First, the company has a low-cost leaching initiative (recovering copper from existing stockpiles), which management believes will produce 800 million pounds of copper per annum, compared to its current overall production of 3.1 billion pounds.
Second, the miner is set to rapidly expand production over the next few years as it brings production in Grasberg, Indonesia, back online following an incident in 2025. Management estimates copper production will grow from 3.1 billion pounds in 2026 to 4.1 billion pounds in 2028.
Third, the miner has several brownfield expansion projects in its pipeline, including in the U.S. One of these is in Bagdad, Arizona, which management believes could double production at the mine, adding up to 250 million pounds of copper per annum in a few years. An investment decision is expected by the end of the year. It's also planning expansions at the mine in the Safford and Lone Star district in Arizona, and at El Abra, Chile.
Is the stock a buy?
All told, the stock looks like a good value for copper bulls and those agnostic in the commodity's pricing alike. While there's no guarantee that copper prices will remain high and mining activity isn't without operational risk, Freeport-McMoRan is well placed to ride the wave of favorable end-market conditions.
