Enbridge Inc., together with its subsidiaries, operates as an energy infrastructure company. The company operates through five segments: Liquids Pipelines, Gas Transmission and Midstream, Gas Distribution and Storage, Renewable Power Generation, and Energy Services. The Liquids Pipelines segment operates pipelines and related terminals to transport various grades of crude oil and other liquid hydrocarbons in Canada and the United States. The Gas Transmission and Midstream segment invests in natural gas pipelines and gathering and processing facilities in Canada and the United States. The Gas Distribution and Storage segment is involved in natural gas utility operations serving residential, commercial, and industrial customers in Ontario, as well as natural gas distribution activities in Quebec. The Renewable Power Generation segment operates power generating assets, such as wind, solar, geothermal, waste heat recovery, and transmission assets in North America. The Energy Services segment provides physical commodity marketing and logistical services to refiners, producers, and other customers in Canada and the United States. The company was formerly known as IPL Energy Inc. and changed its name to Enbridge Inc. in October 1998. Enbridge Inc. was founded in 1949 and is headquartered in Calgary, Canada.

Enbridge Inc. ENB is a leading midstream energy player that generates stable fee-based revenues. Due to the very nature of the business model, the company is not vulnerable to the volatility in oil and natural gas prices.
ENB is also well-positioned to generate incremental cash flows for shareholders. This fact is getting reflected in the midstream giant’s more than C$30 billion in secured capital projects. This includes projects related to liquid pipelines, gas transmissions, renewables and gas distribution & storage.
Once the projects come online, ENB will generate additional cash flows to support shareholders’ dividend payments. In fact, Enbridge has been rewarding shareholders with dividend hikes for 31 consecutive years.
EPD & WMB Also Generate Resilient, Fee-Based Cash Flows
Enterprise Products Partners LP EPD and Williams WMB are also midstream energy giants like ENB.
EPD has more than 50,000 miles of pipeline network transporting oil, gas, refined products and other commodities. EPD also has a liquid storage facility of more than 300,000 barrels. Thus, from the assets, the partnership earns stable fees, thereby generating steady cash flows for unitholders.
Williams is also a leading midstream energy player and is well-positioned to capitalize on clean energy demand. This is because, with its pipeline network spanning 33,000 miles, WMB is responsible for the transportation of significant natural gas volumes produced in the United States. Thus, WMB also generates stable cash flows for shareholders.
ENB’s Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates
Shares of ENB have jumped 17.7% over the past year compared with the 12.3% improvement of the composite stocks belonging to the industry.

However, I think the best way to begin the new year is to invest. The sooner, the better. But where should you put your money to work for you? Here are my picks for the best stocks to invest $1,000 in to start the new year off right.

1. Alphabet
Companies well-positioned to meet the continued surge in demand for artificial intelligence (AI) products and services should generate tremendous profits in 2026. And I can't think of a more likely AI winner than Google parent Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL).
Google Cloud is growing faster than its two bigger rivals, Amazon's (NASDAQ: AMZN) AWS and Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Azure. Its launch of the widely acclaimed Google Gemini 3.0 large language model (LLM) could attract even more customers.
Gemini 3.0 is also improving the generative AI capabilities of Google Search. Rather than being the "Google killer" that some predicted, genAI is instead boosting search traffic for Google. That translates to increased advertising revenue.
I expect that agentic AI will be a key growth driver for Google Cloud in 2026. The integration of AI agents into Google Workspace should also further increase the popularity of the cloud-based productivity suite.
Will 2026 be the year that Waymo becomes a significant revenue contributor to Alphabet? Probably not. However, I think Waymo's autonomous ride-hailing services will continue to gain momentum over the next 12 months. Forward-thinking investors could increasingly recognize the gold mine Alphabet owns with this business.
2. Vertex Pharmaceuticals
One important development to watch with Vertex Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: VRTX) in 2026 is the accelerating momentum for its newest cystic fibrosis (CF) therapy, Alyftrek. To be sure, much of Alyftrek's sales will cannibalize sales of Vertex's other CF products. However, because the royalties for Alyftrek are lower, successful commercialization of the drug should boost Vertex's profits.
I expect that Journavx will also really hit its stride this year. More than 170 million people already have access to the non-opioid pain drug. Vertex believes that access to Journavx will continue to expand in 2026. The greater the access, the greater the sales.
Povetacicept could be another big story for Vertex in the new year. The company has already begun a rolling regulatory submission to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for accelerated approval of the drug as a treatment for IgA nephropathy. This chronic kidney disease affects nearly three times as many patients in the U.S. and Europe as CF. Vertex anticipates completing this filing in the first half of the year.
A second potential regulatory filing appears to be off the table for 2026. Vertex previously predicted that it would file for approval of zimislecel in treating severe Type 2 diabetes in the second half of the year. However, dosing in the Phase 3 study of the experimental drug had to be stopped while an internal manufacturing analysis was conducted. Vertex hopes to resume dosing in 2026.
3. Enbridge
Unlike Alphabet and Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) isn't a high-powered growth stock. However, I think it's a great pick for 2026 for three key reasons.
First, Enbridge doesn't have to deliver sizzling growth to still deliver strong total returns. The energy company's high forward dividend yield of 5.8% gives it a big head start. What's more, Enbridge has increased its dividend for 30 consecutive years.
Second, the company has exceptional long-term growth prospects. Enbridge estimates roughly $50 billion in growth opportunities through the end of the decade, with nearly half of that total related to its gas transmission business.
Third, this stock provides stability to investors' portfolios in the event the economy takes a turn for the worse in the new year. Enbridge ranks as the largest natural gas utility in North America and one of the biggest pipeline operators. Its business generates steady cash flow in all business cycles.
Over the last 20 years, Enbridge has delivered risk-adjusted total shareholder returns that beat the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) and the utilities sector. That's the kind of stock you'll want to own if the economy struggles in 2026.

1. A surprising growth story
NextEra Energy is a utility, a sector that very few people would associate with growth investing. However, the company's dividend has grown at a compound annual rate of 10% over the last 20 years. That's an astounding number and is only possible because of the company's impressive growth profile, with earnings advancing at a similar rate.
The big story here is that NextEra has a strong foundational business on top of which it has built, and continues to expand, a growth business. The foundation is the company's regulated electric utility operation, Florida Power & Light. It's a slow-growth business, but highly reliable. The real growth has come from NextEra Energy's investments in renewable power, which has seen strong demand as the world shifts toward cleaner energy options. This shift is likely to last for decades.
If you have $1,000 to invest, you can buy around 12 shares of NextEra Energy, collecting the stock's 2.8% dividend yield. But the real draw is the ability to benefit from the highly likely dividend increases that are still to come as it continues to expand its clean energy business.
2. High yield, with a hedge
Investors focused on maximizing the income their portfolios generate will probably prefer Enbridge and its lofty 5.8% dividend yield. Meanwhile, that dividend has been increased every year for three consecutive decades. The yield is likely to make up a huge part of your total return over time, but that probably won't bother income lovers.
Indeed, the big knock against Enbridge is that it is a slow and steady tortoise. That's a deliberate move by management, which is highly focused on providing investors with reliable dividends. The core of the business is its fee-based midstream portfolio, which spans oil and natural gas and is spread across all of North America.
However, Enbridge also owns regulated natural gas utilities and renewable power assets, creating a highly diversified business. That is no surprise, since a key goal is to align the business with the world's evolving energy needs.
If you like high yields and businesses that are built to last, you'll likely find Enbridge stock attractive. A $1,000 investment will get you around 20 shares of this high-yield stock.
3. Green shoots are showing for this turnaround
The hardest stock to love on this list is likely to be United Parcel Service, which is commonly referred to simply as UPS. It is in the midst of a significant business overhaul. The ultimate goal is to become a more agile business, focusing on high-growth niches within the package delivery market.
To get there, however, the company has had to spend money even as it makes the conscious decision to part ways with large, but low-value, customers. In other words, revenue is down and costs are up. Not surprisingly, the income statement is a bit of a nightmare at the moment.
However, there are positive signs that a business turnaround is gaining traction. For example, the revenue per piece in the company's U.S. business increased in the second and third quarters of 2025. That is the end goal, even if it hasn't yet translated into better earnings. Notably, the revenue per piece rose nearly 10% in the third quarter, which is a very big improvement.
You'll need to be a bit of a contrarian to buy UPS. But if you like turnaround stories, you should find it highly attractive. The one caveat is that the dividend payout ratio is over 100%. A dividend reset isn't out of the question here, given the business reset that's taking place. If you invest $1,000 in UPS, you'll end up with roughly nine shares.
You have plenty of options
So there you have a growth stock (NextEra), an income stock (Enbridge), and a turnaround stock (UPS). You probably won't like all three, but if you have money to invest, one of them will likely appeal to you right now.

Why the midstream?
Upstream companies produce oil and natural gas, so their sales and earnings are dictated by the price of the commodities they sell. Downstream companies use oil and natural gas to produce chemicals and refined products, such as gasoline. Their most important inputs are volatile commodities, and many of the products they make are volatile commodities, so that's a double whammy on the income statement.
The midstream, where Oneok (NYSE: OKE), Enbridge (NYSE: ENB), and Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD) operate, is largely just toll takers. They own the energy infrastructure, including pipelines, that help to move oil and natural gas around the world. They generate reliable fees based on the volume of energy flowing through their energy assets. Demand is a more important factor in their financial results than the price of oil and natural gas.
Energy is vital to the modern world. Energy demand tends to remain fairly strong regardless of the price of oil. Even recessions don't have as big an impact on demand as you might think. This is how Oneok can reliably support its 5.6% dividend yield, Enbridge its 5.8% yield, and Enterprise its 6.8% distribution yield. To provide a comparison point, the S&P 500 index is currently offering a miserly 1.1% yield.
Impressively reliable income
Oneok has the least impressive dividend track record of the three. The dividend has trended steadily higher throughout the company's history but has experienced a few periods when it remained steady for longer than a year. However, despite the broader volatility of the energy sector, the dividend has not been cut. Enterprise's distribution has been increased annually for 27 consecutive years, and Enbridge's dividend has been hiked every year for three decades.
Add the income consistency to the lofty yields here, and you can see why these midstream players could be no-brainer investment options. That said, they aren't interchangeable. There are subtle differences that may lead you to pick one over the others.
For example, Oneok and Enterprise are both largely focused on owning midstream assets. However, Oneok is structured as a corporation, and Enterprise is structured as a master limited partnership (MLP). That's part of the reason it has a higher yield, noting that MLPs are designed to pass income on to investors in a tax-advantaged manner. The problem is that MLPs also come with additional tax considerations, like having to deal with a K-1 statement at tax time and the fact that MLPs generally shouldn't be owned in a tax-advantaged retirement account, such as an IRA.
You may appreciate the higher yield offered by Enterprise, but it may not align with your broader investment goals and tax situation. Enbridge, meanwhile, hails from Canada. Its dividend is paid in Canadian dollars, which means the income U.S. investors receive changes along with exchange rates.
That said, its business is more diverse, including regulated natural gas utilities and renewable power assets, along with the oil and natural gas midstream assets it owns. If you want to focus only on the midstream, it wouldn't be a great option. However, if you like the idea of diversification, it might be a perfect fit.
Similar but different high-yield stocks
If you are in the market for a high-yield stock, you should take the time to look at Oneok, Enterprise, and Enbridge. While they hail from a volatile sector, the income they generate for investors is material and has proven highly reliable over time. They are not interchangeable, so you need to select the one that works best for you. However, all three could be no-brainer solutions for a dividend investor who's in search of a lofty income stream to help pay the bills in retirement.

I'm not really an income investor at this stage in my life. However, enjoying consistently juicy dividends throughout next year would make me smile. The great news is that several stocks appear to be well-positioned to meet that objective. Here are my five favorite ultra-high-yield dividend stocks to buy for 2026.

1. Ares Capital
Ares Capital (NASDAQ: ARCC) is the largest publicly traded business development company (BDC). Its $28.7 billion portfolio is highly diversified, with over 15 industries represented and no individual investment outside of its subsidiary, Ivory Hill Asset Management, making up more than 2% of the total.
This BDC pays a lofty forward dividend yield of 9.6%. Ares Capital has either maintained or grown its dividend for 16 consecutive years and counting. It has also delivered significantly higher total returns than its rival BDCs, as well as the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), since its inception in 2004.
2. Enbridge
Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) is a leading midstream energy company, operating pipelines that transport 30% of the crude oil produced in North America and 20% of natural gas consumed in the U.S. It's also North America's largest natural gas utility based on volume, serving 7.1 million U.S. customers.
The company boasts an impressive dividend track record, with 30 consecutive years of dividend increases. Enbridge's forward dividend yield is roughly 5.9%. As icing on the cake, the energy leader has around $50 billion of growth opportunities identified through the end of this decade.
3. Energy Transfer
Energy Transfer (NYSE: ET) is another top midstream energy company. The limited partnership (LP) operates over 144,000 miles of pipeline throughout the U.S., as well as other assets, including terminals, storage facilities, and fractionators.
This stock is an excellent choice for income investors, boasting a forward distribution yield of 8.1%. It also has solid growth prospects with the construction of new data centers powered by electricity generation facilities fueled by natural gas. Two recent examples of these opportunities include Energy Transfer's contracts with CloudBurst and Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) to provide natural gas for data centers.
4. Enterprise Products Partners
Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD) is like the same song but a different verse. Like Energy Transfer, it's a leader in the midstream energy industry and is organized as an LP. Enterprise Products Partners operates over 50,000 miles of pipelines, as well as liquids storage facilities, natural gas processing trains, fractionators, and deepwater docks.
This energy stock isn't too far behind Enbridge, with its 27 consecutive years of distribution increases. Enterprise Products Partners' distribution yield is an attractive 6.8%. I especially like that the LP has a long history of generating solid cash flow to fund its distribution. I also appreciate Enterprise's strong balance sheet, which has earned the LP the highest credit rating in the midstream energy industry.
5. Realty Income
Last, but not least, I'm a big fan of Realty Income (NYSE: O). This real estate investment trust (REIT) owns 15,542 commercial real estate properties in nine countries. Realty Income's tenant base features 1,647 clients representing 92 industries.
The REIT bills itself as the "real estate partner to the world's leading companies." That's no exaggeration. Realty Income's clients include well-known companies such as Dollar General (NYSE: DG), FedEx (NYSE: FDX), Home Depot (NYSE: HD), and Walmart (NASDAQ: WMT).
Like Enbridge, Realty Income has increased its dividend for 30 consecutive years. Even more impressively, though, the REIT has raised its dividend payout for 112 straight quarters. Its forward dividend yield is 5.7%. One more thing: Realty Income pays its dividend monthly rather than quarterly. I think this REIT is an ideal stock to make the new year a happy one for income investors.

To highlight Enterprise Products’ strong focus on rewarding unitholders’ wealth, the partnership has returned $61 billion since its IPO. Notably, for 27 consecutive years, the partnership has successfully increased its distributions.
Currently, Enterprise Products’ distribution yield is 6.8%, which is well above the energy sector’s 3.7% yield. However, the yield of the industry’s composite stocks is slightly higher at 6.99%. Thus, compared to the energy sector as a whole, EPD’s distribution yield is lucrative. To add to it, investors who will continue to hold the stock can expect a safe return as the partnership’s business model is backed by stable fee-based revenues and project backlogs.
KMI & ENB’s Yields are Lower Than EPD
In the midstream space, Kinder Morgan, Inc. KMI and EnbridgeInc. ENB are two major players that also generate stable fee-based revenues from their midstream assets. Both KMI and ENB are strongly focused on returning capital to shareholders.
But EPD’s yield is superior to both Kinder Morgan and Enbridge. While Kinder Morgan’s dividend yield is 4.3%, Enbridge’s yield is 5.7%.
EPD’s Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates
Units of Enterprise Products have soared 10.6% over the past year against a 4.1% decline of the composite stocks belonging to the industry.

How Reliable is Enterprise Products' Yield for Income Investors?

You need to do a deep dive on Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) if you are looking for a high-yield stock in the energy sector. A big part of that is the stock's 5.9% yield, which is more than five times the yield you'd collect from an S&P 500 stock on average. However, there's way more to like about Enbridge than just its lofty yield.

1. Enbridge is in the safer energy space
The energy sector is renowned for its high volatility. Oil and natural gas prices are the primary drivers of volatility in the upstream sector, where these commodities are produced. Energy prices, commodity chemicals, and refined products are the issues in the downstream segment of the industry, where oil and natural gas are processed. Enbridge, however, operates in the midstream.
Midstream energy assets, such as pipelines, help to move oil and natural gas, and the products into which they are turned, around the world. The upstream and the downstream need the midstream to run their businesses. The big driver of the midstream is the volume that is moved, not the price of the products being moved. Midstream companies, such as Enbridge, are toll-taker businesses that generate reliable fee income throughout the entire energy cycle.
In other words, Enbridge's business is actually rather boring. That's highlighted by the Canadian company's three-decade-long streak of annual dividend increases (in its home currency). If you are looking for a high-yield energy stock but you don't want to take on commodity risk, Enbridge's 5.9% dividend yield should be right up your alley.
2. Enbridge has a diversified business
Enbridge's portfolio is just as interesting as its business model. Oil and natural gas pipelines make up the lion's share of its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA). However, it also has substantial exposure to regulated natural gas utilities and a small exposure to renewable energy assets.
Natural gas utilities will be a core driver of growth for Enbridge. That's because the government oversight of these assets generally leads to regular capital investments to ensure reliability. Those capital investments, in a virtuous cycle, support rate increases. And all of this activity generally operates outside of Wall Street and commodity markets. This growth opportunity may not be as exciting as opportunities for large midstream projects, but it is reliable and provides a solid foundation for long-term growth.
Meanwhile, the small exposure to renewable energy assets gives the company a toehold in an increasingly important part of the global energy pie. Although it may not be hugely significant to the company's business, it sets the stage for the future. This brings up the last key point.
3. Enbridge's goal is change
Enbridge was once almost entirely focused on moving oil, largely from Canadian oil sands. However, the world has clearly been shifting from dirtier energy sources to cleaner ones. The big transition in recent decades has been from coal to natural gas in the electricity sector. This is a big reason why Enbridge invested heavily to expand its reach in the natural gas segment of the midstream sector.
Natural gas has also been increasing in demand as a home heating choice because it is cleaner-burning than oil. That is a big part of the story in the company's move to expand in the regulated natural gas utility space. In fact, it agreed to buy three natural gas utilities in 2023, with the deals closing in 2024. Effectively, this allows Enbridge to have more natural gas exposure, but in a way that adds diversification to its typical pipeline operations.
Renewable power, meanwhile, has been an area in which Enbridge has invested for a while, but not on a large scale relative to the rest of its business. That makes sense, given that the clean energy transition is still a work in progress. However, it gives Enbridge the experience it needs to move more quickly in the future, if that is the direction that global energy demand moves.
Once again, this is a strategic decision that enables the company to meet the world's energy needs as they evolve. The takeaway for long-term dividend investors is that you can buy Enbridge today and comfortably hold it because you know management is purposely adjusting with the markets it serves.
Enbridge: Set it and forget it
While it isn't wise to buy a stock and ignore it, Enbridge's business approach comes very close to the set it and forget it ideal. Given the well-above-market dividend yield on offer, it would make a great addition to most dividend investors' portfolios. It isn't an exciting investment, but the slow and steady change from this largely fee-based and regulated business will likely keep your dividends reliably rolling in for years to come. Waiting until some future tomorrow to buy it will just mean smaller dividend checks in your pocket.

1. Vistra
Vistra (NYSE: VST) is one of the largest competitive power generators in the U.S. It provides electricity through a diversified fleet of generation assets -- including coal, solar, natural gas, and nuclear -- to around 5 million customers across 20 states.
For Vistra, the emphasis is on competitive. Unlike regulated utilities, which earn a set rate of return approved by regulators, Vistra sells electricity directly into competitive wholesale markets. This means it can benefit from market spikes and higher demand for electricity. On the flip side, it also means Vistra doesn't have guaranteed revenue, which makes its earnings more volatile than traditional utilities stocks.
The growth thesis is simple: Because electricity is spiking in some of Vistra's primary markets, including the Mid-Atlantic and Texas, driven in part by the rapid buildout of data centers, the company is in an enviable position to profit when prices for power move higher.
2. Enbridge
Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) is a powerhouse of North American energy infrastructure. Not only does it move about 30% of the crude oil produced in North America, but it also operates the longest oil and liquids pipeline in the world.
Fun fact: Enbridge's pipeline network is long enough to circle the Earth more than once. But that's not the only fun fact I'm referring to here.
Another is that the company has raised its dividend for 31 consecutive years. The 3% hike (in Canadian dollars) takes the quarterly dividend to CA$0.97 per share, or roughly CA$3.88 annually. This makes it ideal for dividend investors who are willing to trade explosive upside for steady dividend growth.
3. Oklo
Oklo (NYSE: OKLO) is a high-growth nuclear start-up that's designing microreactors. And not just any microreactor, but one with a "powerhouse" design that seems like the perfect fit for AI data centers.
Indeed, Sam Altman has been an early backer of Oklo and was once the board chair. Hype around the company's potential has sent the stock soaring in 2025, with shares trading above $190 at one time, representing a monstrous 787% gain on the year.
Since about mid-October, however, the nuclear stock has come back down to Earth, though shares are still up more than 300% over the past year.
For interested investors, the big caveat right now is Oklo's pre-commercial status. The company has big plans but no revenue to show for it. It doesn't have an operating reactor, nor a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to deploy its powerhouses at scale. And while it is working toward gaining that license, cash burn in the meantime will chip away at its roughly $1.2 billion liquidity.
As such, the company is a speculative play on the future of energy, not a core position by any means.
4. Cameco
Canada-based Cameco (NYSE: CCJ) counts itself among the world's largest uranium miners and refiners. Indeed, the company's core assets -- the McArthur River and Cigar Lake mines -- contain some of the world's highest-grade uranium deposits, with relatively low production costs associated with them.
While Cameco's uranium expertise stretches back about 60 years, only in the last year has the stock really taken off. Part of that shift is a renewed push for nuclear to satisfy electricity demands from power-hungry AI.
The uranium market, to be sure, is notoriously cyclical, and Cameco is not immune to it. The company does, however, have an advantage: Some of its long-term contracts have a pricing floor built-in, which can protect it from downside. These same contracts typically have a price ceiling, too, which could limit its gains.
5. Bloom Energy
Bloom Energy (NYSE: BE) is designing advanced solid oxide fuel cells. These fuel cells can convert natural gas into electricity through an electrochemical process rather than combustion.
It's an intriguing clean-energy solution, and the company already has some big-name buyers, including FedEx, Walmart, Target, Home Depot, and Oracle. The company has also posted record revenue in recent quarters and improved margins, which has helped it become profitable in 2025.
Each of these five stocks offers a way to capture surging electricity demand. For investors who would rather not hand-pick their stocks, a clean energy exchange-traded fund (ETF) is another option.

I probably don't fit the stereotype for someone who invests in stocks that pay exceptionally high dividend yields. I don't depend on my investments for income. I'm not planning to do so in the near future, either.
However, my portfolio includes several ultra-high-yield dividend stocks. And I'm adding to my positions in several of them. Here's why I'm buying these three ultra-high-yield dividend stocks hand over fist for 2026.

1. Ares Capital
Ares Capital (NASDAQ: ARCC) is the largest publicly traded business development company (BDC). Its investment portfolio currently includes 587 companies, with nearly one-quarter of them in the software and services industry.
I'm continuing to add shares of Ares Capital in large part due to its attractive forward dividend yield of 9.5%. I like this juicy dividend because it should help the BDC stock deliver market-beating total returns.
That's what has happened over the long term. Since its inception in 2004, Ares Capital's total returns have handily beaten those of the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC). Am I concerned that this trend hasn't been sustained in 2025? Nope. Ares Capital appears to be well-positioned for the future.
The private lending market is growing. Ares Capital's reputation, industry relationships, and access to capital make it a go-to source for financing for many middle-market companies. I expect the BDC's investment approach will enable it to continue making smart decisions that reward shareholders.
2. Enbridge
I'm optimistic by nature. However, the steep market valuation and economic uncertainty are combining to make me more cautious than usual about which stocks I buy. Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) is an ideal stock to buy, as it balances my optimism with my caution.
This energy company pays a forward dividend yield of 5.9%. Additionally, it has solid growth prospects, particularly with the increasing demand for natural gas as new data centers are constructed and as coal power plants convert to natural gas.
Enbridge projects around $50 billion worth of growth opportunities through 2030. Nearly half of them (roughly $23 billion) are for its gas transmission business.
The stock also satisfies my cautious side. Enbridge is the largest natural gas utility in North America based on volume. That's as stable a business as you'll find. Its 18,085 miles of crude oil pipeline and 70,140 miles of natural gas pipeline (including pipe owned by its DCP Midstream joint venture) generate steady cash flow.
Management describes Enbridge's business model as "low-risk" and "utility-like." I agree. Combined with its extraordinary dividend (which has increased for 30 consecutive years, by the way) and its attractive growth prospects, Enbridge is the kind of stock that aligns perfectly with my current investing goals.
3. Enterprise Products Partners
My reasons for buying Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD) are similar to why I'm buying Enbridge. Enterprise is another midstream energy leader. It operates more than 50,000 miles of pipeline, storage facilities that hold over 300 million barrels of liquids, and other energy infrastructure assets.
This limited partnership (LP) pays a quarterly distribution that yields 6.8%. Enterprise Products Partners has increased its distribution for 27 consecutive years. I don't expect this impressive streak will end anytime soon.
Several of the same tailwinds that benefit Enbridge should also help Enterprise Products Partners. The demand for natural gas is increasing, driven by the growing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) applications and other factors. Rising exports of crude oil, natural gas, ethane, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) produced in the U.S. should also boost Enterprise's revenue.
Enterprise Products Partners offers stability, too. The LP has a long track record of generating dependable cash flow and delivering double-digit returns on invested capital (ROIC). Some ultra-high-yield dividend stocks are risky propositions, but I don't think Enterprise is one of them.

Why I'm Buying These 3 Ultra-High-Yield Dividend Stocks Hand Over Fist for 2026

Energy Transfer (NYSE: ET) has been trying to convert its Lake Charles terminal to a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility for the past decade. After numerous delays, the company appeared to be on the precipice of finally making a Final Investment Decision (FID) on that project early next year. However, instead of approving the project, the company announced its surprising decision to suspend the development of Lake Charles LNG.
Here's a look at what drove this decision and what it means for the master limited partnership's (MLP) future.

The latest roadblock
Energy Transfer has been working on developing an LNG export terminal in Lake Charles, LA, for more than a decade. The company designed the project with the capacity to liquify and export 16.5 million metric tons per annum. However, it has had to overcome several obstacles over the years, including challenging marketing conditions, the loss of its joint venture partner Shell, intense competition, and permitting issues. Those issues have caused continual delays in the company's ability to approve the project over the years.
However, momentum had been building toward an FID over the past year. Energy Transfer has secured several commercial agreements with customers to buy LNG from the proposed terminal, including Shell, Chevron, and MidOcean Energy. As a result, it now has enough commercial support to approve the project.
The latest issue is that the company doesn't want to fund this large-scale project on its own. It wanted to sell down 80% of its interest to equity partners before approving the project. While MidOcean Energy agreed to take a 30% stake in the project in exchange for 30% of the LNG production, Energy Transfer hasn't found any other partners for the remaining 50% interest it wants to unload. That's leading the pipeline company to suspend development, although it remains open to discussions with potential partners interested in developing the project.
Too much competition
Energy Transfer decided to suspend the development of Lake Charles LNG to focus on allocating capital to its burgeoning backlog of natural gas pipeline infrastructure projects. These projects have better risk/reward profiles compared to Lake Charles LNG.
For example, the company recently announced an increase in the transportation capacity of the Transwestern Pipeline's planned Desert Southwest expansion project. The company initial made an FID on the project in August, with plans to build 516 miles of 42-inch pipeline from Texas to Arizona with the capacity to ship 1.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). The $5.3 billion project had an anticipated in-service date of the fourth quarter of 2029. It's now upsizing this project due to customer demand. It will construct a 48-inch pipeline with a capacity of up to 2.3 Bcf/d at a cost of $5.6 billion.
As a result, Energy Transfer now expects its 2026 capital spending to be $5.2 billion. That's a $200 million increase from its initial budget and up from $4.6 billion this year. This spending will enable the company to work on Desert Southwest as well as fund a whole host of other expansions, including Phases I & II of its $2.7 billion Hugh Brinson Pipeline.
Additionally, the company has several other projects under development that it could approve over the next year. Data center developers Fermi and CloudBurst have signed long-term gas supply deals with Energy Transfer, pending FIDs of their data center developments. Those are just two of the many gas supply contracts it's working on with data center developers and gas distribution utilities. Meanwhile, the company is working with Canadian energy infrastructure giant Enbridge on a potential expansion of the Dakota Access Pipeline that's on track for an FID by the middle of next year.
With so many projects already approved and more under development, Energy Transfer doesn't have the capacity to fund 70% of Lake Charles LNG's cost without straining its financial profile. While approving that project would have been a meaningful growth driver for the company, it has no shortage of expansion opportunities.
A disciplined approach
Energy Transfer has encountered financial difficulties in the past by approving more projects than it could handle. That's leading the company to be much more disciplined these days, focusing only on its best investment opportunities. While Lake Charles LNG is a promising project, other opportunities offer better returns with less risk, leading the company to suspend the LNG facility and focus on even better options. This approach positions the company to grow value for investors in the future, including continuing to increase its high-yielding distribution.
