Enbridge Inc., together with its subsidiaries, operates as an energy infrastructure company. The company operates through five segments: Liquids Pipelines, Gas Transmission and Midstream, Gas Distribution and Storage, Renewable Power Generation, and Energy Services. The Liquids Pipelines segment operates pipelines and related terminals to transport various grades of crude oil and other liquid hydrocarbons in Canada and the United States. The Gas Transmission and Midstream segment invests in natural gas pipelines and gathering and processing facilities in Canada and the United States. The Gas Distribution and Storage segment is involved in natural gas utility operations serving residential, commercial, and industrial customers in Ontario, as well as natural gas distribution activities in Quebec. The Renewable Power Generation segment operates power generating assets, such as wind, solar, geothermal, waste heat recovery, and transmission assets in North America. The Energy Services segment provides physical commodity marketing and logistical services to refiners, producers, and other customers in Canada and the United States. The company was formerly known as IPL Energy Inc. and changed its name to Enbridge Inc. in October 1998. Enbridge Inc. was founded in 1949 and is headquartered in Calgary, Canada.

Enbridge appears to be a high-quality infrastructure asset, but no longer a cheap one, where strong cash flows are paired with a notable debt burden and moderate operating efficiency. On valuation multiples, the picture is rather stretched: P/E, P/S, and P/B are above the industry median, while P/FCF looks especially high, which usually limits the potential for rerating. At the same time, the metrics themselves have not shown a sustained acceleration in recent periods that could justify such a rich valuation. Debt-to-equity is significantly above the industry median and remains elevated, while long-term debt continues to rise, which is an important risk factor for a capital-intensive energy company. Liquidity is also weaker than average: the current ratio and quick ratio are below the median, so the cushion for covering short-term obligations is limited. On the other hand, revenue, EBITDA, operating profit, and net income remain substantial and generally support the investment case for the company as a stable cash flow generator. ROE, ROA, and ROI are below industry benchmarks, suggesting that the capital base is not being used as efficiently as it could be. Profit margin and operating margin are also below the median, and gross margin has declined noticeably compared with earlier periods, indicating pressure on earnings quality. Dividend yield has been declining year by year, so the dividend factor does not currently appear to strengthen the valuation, especially in light of the high share price. Positively, asset growth, the maintenance of significant equity, and a high return on tangible equity stand out, confirming the resilience of the business. Overall, the fundamentals point to a reliable but not obviously undervalued company: strong scale and cash generation are offset by expensive multiples, weak liquidity, and elevated debt. For an investor, this is more of a defensive income and stability story than one of strong upside over the next year.

To summarize my investment approach, I prefer to buy companies with long histories of dividend increases and historically high yields. Those two traits don't come around all that often, and sometimes I find clusters of stocks in specific sectors. I need to think specifically about diversification, one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce risk. Here's how I've done it as I've built my portfolio of around 34 investments.
How many stocks do you need to be diversified?
The Motley Fool recommends that investors own 50 stocks. That's a perfectly fine number, but also a lot of work. And just owning 50 stocks doesn't actually mean you are diversified. You could own 50 technology stocks, for example, which would leave you with exposure to just a single sector. That's not diversification. Diversification is really about owning a reasonable number of investments across a wide range of sectors and asset classes.

My first step toward diversification was to take an honest look at what I want to achieve and what I'm capable of. My goal is a mixture of income and capital appreciation. I am fairly confident in my ability to select dividend stocks, though every investor makes mistakes from time to time, and I know I can only juggle so many stocks at once. In other words, 50 stocks are too many for me, so a core part of my diversification strategy is to outsource some of my work.
For example, I own two Baron mutual funds to gain exposure to growth stocks and smaller companies. I own several closed-end funds: one focused on healthcare stocks with an option income overlay, one investing in convertible securities, and one with a broadly diversified dividend portfolio. And I own three exchange-traded funds: one with an option income focus and two that use very different screening approaches to pick dividend stocks.
This collection of investments includes hundreds of stocks across a wide range of sectors (and convertible bonds), materially adding to my diversification. And many of these pooled investments do things I either don't want to do myself because they are time-consuming (such as an option income strategy) or don't think I can reasonably do myself (such as investing in healthcare and small growth stocks). With my foundation spread widely across sectors, investment approaches, and a large number of stocks and convertible bonds, I can comfortably invest in individual stocks knowing I have a diversified foundation to work from.
Step two is focusing on what I can do: Dividend stocks
My preference is to buy companies that have impressive histories of increasing their dividends and yields that are historically high. I dig deeply into the companies I am considering and only buy when I believe the business is worth owning. Some of the stocks that have made the cut include Realty Income (NYSE: O), PepsiCo (NASDAQ: PEP), Black Hills (NYSE: BKH), and Enbridge (NYSE: ENB).
Stepping back, that's a real estate investment trust, a consumer staples giant, a regulated utility, and a North American pipeline giant. Because of my pooled investments, I don't worry too much about overlaps, but I also make sure to buy stocks across various industries. For example, I own several REITs, several consumer staples companies, and a couple of energy stocks and utilities. These are areas where income opportunities often arise, so I have to go where the dividends are, while still working to keep the portfolio spread across various sectors.
Notably, when I buy a stock, I invest a specific dollar amount. Basically, I have a position size that I want to build. Once I build to a full position, I don't add to it. That may limit my upside, but it also means my downside risk is limited.
What's also notable here is that I try to buy when a stock has a historically high yield. For example, despite a long and successful history, PepsiCo isn't currently performing very well as a business. I believe the Dividend King, with over 50 annual dividend increases, will get back on track. But Wall Street is downbeat on the stock, pushing the yield above 4%. It was an opportunistic purchase I was prepared to jump on because if I can't find something I want to buy, I'm happy to hold cash. Warren Buffett uses a similar approach, so I'm not going out on a limb here. And cash is the ultimate "safe" investment, though inflation erodes its value over time. Still, I usually have cash on hand because I prefer to be highly selective about which companies receive my capital.
The big takeaway is to know your limitations
Diversification is important, and it is fairly easy to do if you take the time to consider how many baskets you are capable of dealing with at one time. I know I can't do everything all at once, so I've outsourced aspects of my portfolio while continuing to do the things that I enjoy and believe I'm good at. This allows me to focus my energy where it is likely to produce the best results. And if I can't "find" an investment, I don't force myself to find one just to say I'm doing something. I only make a move when I have a strong conviction, knowing that cash is a safe-haven investment that provides me with material flexibility in both good markets and bad ones.

Enbridge (NYSE:ENB) has been very busy over the past two weeks. The Canadian energy infrastructure giant has announced three transactions during that timespan, including nearly $3.2 billion of acquisitions. That's a lot of action for a company that operates sleepy utility and pipeline businesses. All that activity likely has the company's income-focused investors wondering whether they should be worried or excited.
As a long-term Enbridge investor, I'm excited about all the company's wheeling and dealing, as it should strengthen its 5.8%-yielding dividend and support continued growth. Here's why.

What Enbridge is buying
On Aug. 26, Enbridge announced the acquisition of Salt Creek Midstream's crude oil gathering business. The $600 million deal added 500 miles of crude oil gathering infrastructure in the core of the Delaware Basin. It extended its presence deeper into America's busiest oil-producing region, strengthening its value chain to offer customers full wellhead-to-water integration through its oil pipeline systems and U.S. Gulf Coast export infrastructure.
Enbridge unveiled an even bigger deal on Sept. 9, agreeing to acquire Tallgrass Energy's crude oil business for $2.55 billion. The deal includes a 75% interest in the 1,050-mile Pony Express Pipeline, a 51% interest in the Powder River Gateway System, and 8.4 million barrels of storage capacity. These assets serve as a strategic bridge between the Bakken, Powder River, and Denver-Julesburg basins and Enbridge's existing crude oil infrastructure. This deal strengthens its already leading position in the North American crude oil transportation market and expands its footprint in the U.S. Rockies region.
In addition to their strategic importance, both deals also have notable financial benefits. It's buying highly contracted assets that will provide additional sources of durable cash flows. Enbridge also expects both acquisitions to be accretive to its distributable cash flow per share within the first year. Additionally, they both have embedded growth. For example, the Tallgrass deal includes the PXP2 growth project, a $300 million expansion that should enter service in late 2027. These deals should further enhance the sustainability of Enbridge's dividend and its ability to continue increasing the payout, which it has done for 31 consecutive years (in Canadian dollars).
How it's financing its growth
These deals enhance Enbridge's already strong growth profile. The company has 41 billion Canadian dollars ($29.6 billion) of secured growth capital projects underway. While its dividend consumes 60%-70% of its annual cash flow, Enbridge still has CA$5 billion-CA$6 billion ($3.6 billion-$4.3 billion) of annual free cash flow after dividends to reinvest in growth. Additionally, it has CA$5 billion ($3.6 billion) in annual debt capacity while maintaining its current credit ratings. That provides it with CA$10 billion–CA$11 billion ($7.2 billion–$7.9 billion) in annual funding capacity.
However, the company is still taking prudent action to maintain its financial strength. One way it did that was through a new joint venture to support investments in its Westcoast Pipeline System. On Aug. 27, private equity giants KKR and Apollo agreed to invest about CA$2.7 billion ($2 billion) to fund future expansion on this system. Enbridge will receive CA$700 million ($505 million) in cash at closing, which it can reinvest. Meanwhile, it's offloading a portion of the future capital commitments to expand this system to its partners. Capital recycling deals and strategic partnerships like this provide additional funding for new growth opportunities.
Enbridge also announced a stock offering following the Tallgrass deal. It's looking to raise at least CA$2.6 billion ($1.9 billion) to help fund its two acquisitions and create additional financial flexibility for future growth opportunities.
While the pipeline company has significant internal funding capacity, it's capitalizing on opportunities to tap external capital sources (joint-venture equity and stock sales) to maintain its flexibility. It shows that Enbridge isn't trying to grow at all costs, but strategically expand through accretive deals that should support its ability to continue growing its operations and high-yield dividend.
Excited by the future of Enbridge's dividend
Enbridge's three transactions over the past two weeks are strategically and financially sound. As a result, they should enhance the company's ability to grow its dividend in the future. That makes me even more excited to continue holding this high-quality, high-yielding dividend stock.

Why should you pay more attention to Enbridge?
As a midstream pipeline operator, Enbridge is well-insulated from volatile commodity prices because it simply charges upstream and downstream companies "tolls" to use its infrastructure. That business model generates plenty of cash, which it consistently returns to its investors.
From 2021 to 2025, Enbridge's distributable cash flow (DCF) per share increased from $4.96 CAD to $5.71 CAD ($4.13). For 2026, it expects that figure to rise to $5.70-$6.10 CAD per share, which will easily cover its forward dividend rate of $3.88 CAD ($2.81) per share.
Enbridge's stock still looks reasonably valued at 21 times forward earnings. Its scale, diversification, and the multi-decade durability of its dividend all indicate it's a great long-term play for income investors -- regardless of where oil and gas prices go from here.

This Pipeline Stock Has Raised Its Dividend for 31 Straight Years. Almost Nobody Talks About It.

Are you looking for some new income-producing holdings? The recent rise in interest rates presents new options that many investors weren't considering before. The fact of the matter is, however, energy stocks remain some of the market's highest-yielding prospects. They also offer income growth that bonds just can't.
Here's a closer look at three of the energy sector's highest-yielding names that you can count on for steady income.

Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) isn't exactly a household name, but there's a good chance your household regularly benefits from the service it provides. This company's 18,000 miles' worth of pipelines handle 30% of all the crude oil produced within North America and 40% of the crude oil imported into the U.S. Meanwhile, it owns and operates nearly 19,000 miles of natural gas pipelines, moving 20% of the gas consumed within the United States.
It's an ideal business model for supporting ongoing dividend payments, too. Whereas more familiar energy names like integrated explorers/drillers/refiners Chevron and ExxonMobil see their profits rise and fall in step with the price of oil and natural gas, pipeline operators like Enbridge charge for volume-based usage of their infrastructure. That means they make a predictable amount of money regardless of the value of the commodity being pumped through their pipelines. Enbridge just needs consumption of both to remain steady, which it is.
Perhaps the chief bullish argument for owning a stake in Enbridge, however, isn't its forward-looking dividend yield of 5.6%. While that's certainly solid, the top selling point here is the fact that Enbridge has now raised its per-share dividend payment for 31 consecutive years, with no end to the streak in sight.
Energy Transfer
At first blush, Energy Transfer (NYSE: ET) looks a lot like Enbridge, and there are plenty of similarities to be sure. It owns a massive network of oil and gas pipelines within the United States as well, handling millions of barrels of crude oil and billions of cubic feet of natural gas every single day. It did $85.5 billion worth of business last fiscal year, predictably turning $9 billion of that into net income.
From that, $1.325 worth of per-share cash payments were passed along to shareholders, translating into a yield of nearly 6.2% that's since improved to a forward-looking yield of 6.3%. Not bad, especially given that the company's now raised its quarterly payout for 19 consecutive quarters. Not years. Quarters. The last time it didn't do so was in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, when everything was disrupted. As was the case with Enbridge, there's no end in sight for this growth streak, either.
There is one important detail to consider before diving into Energy Transfer, though. That is, it's not organized as a conventional corporation. It's structured as a master limited partnership, which is a tax-efficient way of passing a portion of its profits along to shareholders, but one that comes with infrequently used tax forms and a few extra steps when filing your taxes.
It's certainly nothing a well-qualified tax professional can't handle, or, for that matter, a taxpayer familiar with these forms. Their usually higher yields may not necessarily be worth the additional hassle, however, if you can find a comparably yielding alternative.
Brookfield Infrastructure Partners
Last but not least, add Brookfield Infrastructure Partners (NYSE: BIP) (NYSE: BIPC) to your list of energy stocks to buy this month if you're looking for steady income.
Just as the name suggests, like Energy Transfer, Brookfield Infrastructure Partners is a partnership, although there's an easier-to-own version for investors who don't want the additional tax-filing headache. While the ticker BIP may be the more net-profitable option for anyone who doesn't mind the additional tax forms and tax-filing work, BIPC represents the same company, but in a more conventional corporate structure that pays conventionally taxed dividends reported on an ordinary 1099. That being said, know that Brookfield intends to fold BIP into BIPC in the near future, simplifying its taxability as well as newcomers' choice between the two.
The ultimate underlying bullish argument is still the same either way, though. That's what Brookfield Infrastructure Partners is. Simply put, this company holds whole or partial stakes in a portfolio of several privately owned power utility providers, oil and gas pipeline networks, data center infrastructure, and a bunch of revenue-bearing railroad assets. These holdings collectively produced over $700 million worth of operational cash flow last quarter alone, allowing shareholders to plug into income streams that simply aren't accessible any other way.
Perhaps the top reason income-minded investors might want to consider stepping into a position in BIPC, however, is the long-term performance goals that management is aiming for, and will very likely reach. Brookfield Infrastructure Partners says it's looking for operational fund-flow growth of at least 10% per year, leading to annual distribution (partnerships' equivalent to dividends) growth of between 5% and 9% that will only consume between 60% and 70% of its profit equivalents.
The thing is, with a reasonably targeted rate of return of between 12% and 15% on new infrastructure investments, the company could easily do what it says it's hoping to do.
Newcomers will be plugging into a forward-looking yield of 4.9%, by the way. You can find higher-yielding names within the energy sector. But you may not find higher-yielding prospects with as much long-term payment growth as this one promises.

3 High-Yield Energy Stocks to Buy in September for Steady Income

(RTTNews) - Enbridge Inc. (ENB, ENB.TO) on Wednesday announced that it has agreed to acquire Tallgrass Energy's crude oil business for $2.55 billion in cash, expanding its crude transportation footprint across the U.S. Rockies and strengthening its North American liquids pipeline network.
The acquired business includes a 75% interest in Pony Express Pipeline, a 1,050-mile crude system with approximately 460 kbpd of capacity connecting Rockies production to Cushing, Oklahoma.
It also includes a 51% interest in the Powder River Gateway system, about 8.4 million barrels of crude storage capacity across nine terminals, and Stanchion Energy, a crude marketing business.
The transaction represents an estimated acquisition multiple of 10-11x forward enterprise value to EBITDA, Enbridge said.
The company expects the assets to generate significant free cash flow and provide opportunities for future growth and operational synergies. Pony Express is highly contracted through the decade, primarily with investment-grade counterparties.
Enbridge expects the deal to be accretive to distributable cash flow per share in the first full year of ownership, although its 2026 financial guidance is not materially impacted due to the expected late-year closing.
The transaction is expected to close later in 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions. Enbridge reaffirmed its medium-term outlook for approximately 5% compound annual growth in EBITDA, DCF per share and EPS.

The company has appointed Michele Harradence to succeed Ebel as President and Chief Executive Officer and to the Board of Directors, effective January 1, 2027.
Harradence is currently Enbridge's Executive Vice-President and President, Gas Distribution and Storage. Ebel will remain a member of the Board through his retirement date and serve as an advisor to the Board and Harradence from January until May 2027.
Ebel joined Enbridge in 2017, transitioning from President and CEO of Spectra Energy to Chair of the Board of Enbridge with the merger of the two companies. He became President and CEO in January 2023.
Harradence's appointment follows a multi-year succession planning process led by the Board and reflects her extensive leadership experience across Enbridge's gas distribution and gas transmission and midstream businesses and her previous roles in the oil sands and in refining in Canada.
Harradence has led Enbridge's gas utilities since 2022, including guiding the integration of U.S. utility businesses.
Prior to her appointment to the utility, she was Senior Vice-President and Chief Operations Officer in Enbridge's Gas Transmission and Midstream business in Houston. She joined Enbridge in 2014 having served previously in senior leadership roles with Shell Canada.

1. AbbVie
Perhaps the most important thing to know about AbbVie (NYSE: ABBV) is that it's a Dividend King. This elite group of companies have increased their dividends for at least 50 consecutive years. AbbVie's track record of dividend hikes spans 53 straight years, including the period when it was part of Abbott Labs (NYSE: ABT).
Inclusion in the Dividend Kings usually means that a company has a remarkably resilient underlying business. That's definitely the case with AbbVie. Its roots date back to 1888. The company has survived and thrived throughout its 138-year history despite facing stiff challenges.
One of AbbVie's biggest challenges was the patent expiration for Humira, which ranked for years as its top-selling product. But management planned well for the loss of exclusivity. Today, AbbVie has two successors to Humira -- Skyrizi and Rinvoq -- that together are already more successful than Humira was at its peak.
AbbVie's business development strategy has also been effective. Most recently, the company announced plans to acquire Apogee Therapeutics for $10.9 billion. This deal further expands AbbVie's immunology pipeline.
2. Enbridge
Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) isn't a Dividend King yet, but it's well on the way to joining the club. The energy company has increased its dividend for 31 consecutive years. And with a dividend yield of around 5.6%, Enbridge doesn't need to deliver tremendous share price appreciation to deliver a double-digit total return.
I think such attractive returns are likely going forward. Four key trends serve as big growth drivers for Enbridge: the surging build-out of data centers, rising demand for liquid natural gas (LNG), onshoring, and the conversion of power plants from coal to gas.
Enbridge forecasts a compound annual growth rate of around 5% for its distributable cash flow, earnings per share, and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA). As long as the company's dividends continue to flow at least at current levels, double-digit total returns should be attainable.
Fortunately for investors, Enbridge's business stability should make the dividend safe. The company operates the world's longest oil and liquids transportation system, with its pipelines transporting 40% of U.S. crude oil imports and 30% of crude oil produced in North America. It's also North America's largest natural gas utility by volume.
3. Realty Income
Speaking of business stability, the third dividend stock on our list ranks highly in this category. Realty Income (NYSE: O) shares have outperformed the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) across 13 drawdowns of 10% or more since its public listing in 1994, with an average total return of -2.6% versus -22.6% for the S&P 500.
The real estate investment trust (REIT) has also increased its dividend for 31 consecutive years. And it has paid a dividend for 674 consecutive months.
What's behind Realty Income's remarkable record? A diversified real estate portfolio serves as a key factor. The REIT owns over 15,500 properties leased to clients representing 92 industries. Those industries include recession-resistant ones, such as grocery stores, convenience stores, and dollar stores.
Realty Income's growth prospects look bright, too. The company has a $15 trillion total addressable market. Around $9 billion of this total addressable market is in Europe, which has a highly fragmented market that offers attractive risk-adjusted returns.

Energy stocks are a go-to source for many investors seeking dividend income. The trailing 12-month yield of energy stocks in the S&P 500 is currently over 4%, more than three times higher than the index's overall average of around 1%. However, yields vary within the energy sector. Right now, midstream companies pay better than big oil.
Here's a look at the differing yields and growth profiles of each side of the barrel.

Big oil can pay big dividends
ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) and Chevron (NYSE: CVX) are two of the world's largest oil companies. They're also leading dividend stocks. Exxon has increased its payment for 43 straight years (fewer than 5% of S&P 500 companies have achieved this), while Chevron has 39 years of annual dividend increases under its belt. Both oil stocks currently offer above-average dividend yields: Chevron's is around 3.5%, while ExxonMobil's is over 2.5%.
The oil giants are in a strong position to continue growing their dividends. Exxon's 2030 plan would see it deliver 13% earnings growth and double-digit cash flow growth, with even higher per-share growth driven by its share repurchase program, assuming constant margins and pricing relative to 2024. Meanwhile, Chevron expects to deliver more than 10% annual free cash flow growth through 2030, assuming oil averages $70 a barrel. Both companies are working to enhance their strategies. Exxon is bidding on Shell's U.S. chemicals assets while Chevron is looking to expand into Iraq. They should have plenty of fuel to continue increasing their high-yielding dividends.
The midstream side of the barrel can pay even better
Most energy midstream companies currently offer even higher yields than those big oil giants. For example, Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD) currently yields around 5.8%, while Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) yields slightly less at 5.5%. Others in the sector have lower yields, with Williams and Kinder Morgan closer to Exxon and Chevron's range at 2.8% and 3.7%, respectively. Tax complexity can contribute to the higher yields offered by some midstream companies, as Enterprise is a master limited partnership (MLP), while Enbridge is a Canadian corporation.
Many midstream companies have strong dividend growth records. Enbridge has increased its dividend for 31 straight years (in Canadian dollars), while Enterprise has raised its distribution for 28 consecutive years. Both companies should have the fuel to continue growing their payouts. Enterprise currently has $6.5 billion of major capital projects under construction that should enter service through early 2029. Meanwhile, Enbridge has a massive 41 billion Canadian dollars ($29.6 billion) in secured projects in its backlog that it expects to finish through the early 2030s. It recently enhanced its strategy by purchasing Salt Creek Midstream's crude gathering business for $600 million and securing CA$2.7 billion ($1.4 billion) in funding from private equity giants KKR and Apollo to support Westcoast pipeline expansions in Canada.
Verdict: Midstream wins if tax complexity isn't a concern
The energy midstream sector offers higher current yields than big oil, especially among MLPs and Canadian companies. So, if income is your sole aim, and you're fine with dealing with the tax complexities (MLPs send Schedule K-1 Federal tax forms, while there's a 15% withholding tax on Canadian dividends paid on shares held in a regular brokerage account), they're the better side of the barrel to buy right now.

1. Chevron
You won't find many stocks with a more dependable dividend than Chevron (NYSE: CVX). The integrated oil company has increased its dividend for 39 consecutive years, a period that included a global pandemic, recessions, and oil price crashes. In January 2026, Chevron raised its quarterly payout by 4% to $1.78 per share. Its forward dividend yield tops 3.5%.
Behind Chevron's impressive dividend track record is a massive business that spans all parts of the oil and gas industry. Chevron ranks as the world's third-largest energy company by market cap. It's the global leader in natural gas production. The company boasts the industry's highest cash margins. Chevron is also delivering the greatest growth.
Thanks to the acquisition of Hess, Chevron's market position is arguably stronger than ever. The deal gave the company significant exposure to Guyana's low-cost, high-return oil fields.
Chevron can afford to fully fund its dividend program and its planned capital projects even if Brent crude prices fall below $50 per barrel. Brent prices are currently over $86 per barrel. And with uncertainty about whether and when traffic will return to normal levels through the critical Strait of Hormuz, prices could remain elevated for a long time.
2. Enbridge
Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) doesn't quite match Chevron's dividend track record, but it isn't too far off. The Calgary-based energy company has increased its dividend for 31 consecutive years. And Enbridge handily beats Chevron on one key front: Its forward dividend yield is roughly 5.6%.
The company's importance to the North American economy helps make its dividend so reliable. Enbridge's pipelines transport around 30% of the crude oil produced in North America and one-fifth of the natural gas consumed in the U.S.
But despite being a giant in the midstream energy industry, we can't only call Enbridge a pipeline stock these days. It's also the largest natural gas utility on the continent by volume. The company provides natural gas to 7.2 million customers.
No discussion of Enbridge would be complete without mentioning its growth prospects. Management is on track to pursue up to $20 billion in growth opportunities by the end of 2027, including new pipelines, gas distribution and storage facilities, and renewable power projects. Even better, Enbridge has identified roughly $50 billion worth of opportunities through 2030.
3. Enterprise Products Partners
For income investors seeking a more pure-play midstream stock, Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD) stands out. This master limited partnership (MLP) has increased its distribution for 28 consecutive years. And its distribution is exceptionally juicy, with a yield north of 5.7%.
Enterprise Products Partners operates over 50,000 miles of pipeline that transport a wide range of hydrocarbon products. Its primary focus, though, is natural gas liquids (NGLs), which account for 55% of the company's gross operating margin.
NGLs present a tremendous growth market for Enterprise, too. Asian and European demand for the fuel is expected to grow by around 30% through the end of the decade. Data centers hosting artificial intelligence (AI) applications should remain a key driver of NGL demand growth.
Sure, other pipeline companies will also benefit from this trend. However, Enterprise Products Partners is the gold standard in the midstream industry. It sports the strongest balance sheet. The management team is top-notch and aligned with unitholders' interests. Enterprise is also well positioned financially to invest in the expansion required to capitalize on its growth opportunities.

Rather, since pipeline network owners like Enbridge simply charge a flat fee based on usage volume, they're only concerned about consumption (which remains steady).
And its business's resiliency is evident in this company's long-term performance. Not only has Enbridge paid a quarterly dividend like clockwork for decades now, but it has also raised its per-share payment every year for the past 31 years. Indeed, had you reinvested these dividends in more Enbridge shares, a $10,000 investment made 30 years ago would be worth a little over $206,000 now, mostly thanks to those ever-growing dividends.
That's an annualized growth rate of 10.6%, by the way. Assuming Enbridge stock continues to inflate its stock and its dividend payment at the same pace, investing $450 per month every month -- and reinvesting its dividends -- for the next 20 years would leave you with just a little less than $374,000. Moreover, based on the stock's current forward-looking yield of 5.6%, that position could generate nearly $21,000 in annual dividend income.
