Enbridge Inc., together with its subsidiaries, operates as an energy infrastructure company. The company operates through five segments: Liquids Pipelines, Gas Transmission and Midstream, Gas Distribution and Storage, Renewable Power Generation, and Energy Services. The Liquids Pipelines segment operates pipelines and related terminals to transport various grades of crude oil and other liquid hydrocarbons in Canada and the United States. The Gas Transmission and Midstream segment invests in natural gas pipelines and gathering and processing facilities in Canada and the United States. The Gas Distribution and Storage segment is involved in natural gas utility operations serving residential, commercial, and industrial customers in Ontario, as well as natural gas distribution activities in Quebec. The Renewable Power Generation segment operates power generating assets, such as wind, solar, geothermal, waste heat recovery, and transmission assets in North America. The Energy Services segment provides physical commodity marketing and logistical services to refiners, producers, and other customers in Canada and the United States. The company was formerly known as IPL Energy Inc. and changed its name to Enbridge Inc. in October 1998. Enbridge Inc. was founded in 1949 and is headquartered in Calgary, Canada.

Enbridge looks like a high-quality but no longer cheap defensive asset with a noticeable debt burden. On valuation multiples, the picture is rather stretched: P/E, P/S, P/B, and especially P/FCF are significantly above the industry median, which limits rerating potential and requires very steady cash flow growth. At the same time, the trend in the multiples does not provide a strong argument for becoming cheaper: P/B and P/S remain high, while P/FCF has risen to a very demanding level, which for an investor means an expensive valuation relative to free cash flow. Profitability is mixed: ROE and return on tangible equity look decent and above industry benchmarks, but ROA and ROI are noticeably weaker than the median, and net margin is below the industry. Operating margin is holding close to the industry level and looks more stable than net profitability, which partially supports the business quality. The dividend profile has weakened: current yield is unavailable in the data, and it has been declining over the years, so the dividend argument does not currently strengthen the valuation. The balance sheet remains heavy: debt/equity is more than twice the industry level, long-term debt is increasing, and liquidity as measured by quick ratio and current ratio is weak. This is typical for a capital-intensive infrastructure company, but in its current form it increases sensitivity to rates and refinancing. On the other hand, revenue, EBITDA, operating income, and net income are high in absolute terms and generally growing, which confirms the scale and resilience of the cash generator. Asset growth also supports the core investment story, although liabilities and capital pressure are increasing at the same time. Overall, the fundamentals support a moderately cautious view: the business is high quality and predictable, but the valuation already reflects a significant portion of these strengths, and the debt burden and weak liquidity do not allow for an aggressive increase in the target price. For an investor, this means there is upside potential, but it should be limited and conservative, without expectations of strong multiple expansion.

Pipeline stocks have long been a favorite among passive income investors. While a bit more complicated in reality, pipeline businesses can be thought of as toll roads for fossil fuels. Companies that drill for oil and gas are considered upstream producers. Downstream producers largely consist of refineries and final distribution channels, such as gas stations.
Pipeline companies are considered midstream producers. That is, they handle fossil fuels after they're produced, but before they're processed and delivered to the final customer.

In general, pipeline infrastructure is difficult to build. These transportation networks can cost billions of dollars, with long construction lead times and numerous regulatory hurdles and permitting requirements. Once built, however, a competing pipeline in the same area usually isn't added until volumes exceed the original pipeline's capacity. In a nutshell, once a pipeline network is established, it often has a monopoly on local fossil fuel transportation.
You can probably already see what makes pipeline stocks so attractive for income investors. Most costs are up front during initial construction. And afterward, ongoing operating costs are relatively low. In combination with a monopoly-like status, pipeline businesses often generate substantial free cash flow, which can be repurposed for dividends or share buybacks.
If you're looking for the best pipeline stock to buy right now, one major pipeline operator sticks out as the obvious choice. Its 5% dividend is as reliable as it gets.
Enbridge remains my top pipeline stock for 2026 and beyond
I've been an admirer of Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) for years. Enbridge owns one of the largest pipeline networks in North America, operating more than 17,000 miles of crude oil and natural gas pipelines across the continent. And according to new research from TD Bank, it's a great time to operate a major pipeline network, especially natural gas infrastructure.
"U.S. natural gas demand from LNG [liquefied natural gas] exports and data centers could support 20 billion cubic feet per day growth through 2030," the bank predicts. That would be a 20% increase from today's levels. "Natural gas demand growth remains firmly underpinned by LNG capacity expansion and data centers, requiring additional infrastructure beyond what is currently under construction."
This should be good news for Enbridge, which moves 30% of North America's crude oil and 20% of U.S. natural gas. More than half of the company's cash flows stem from either gas transmission or gas distribution. And most of those contracts are based on volumes, not pricing. So even if volumes surge, depressing natural gas prices, Enbridge will still benefit from its pipeline network running closer to full capacity.
Enbridge has ramped up its capital expenditures to support expanding its network for increased volumes. But high infrastructure spending likely won't threaten the dividend. In 2023, the company posted distributable cash per share of around $5.45. Distributable cash flow has increased every year since, and is expected to reach $5.70 to $6.10 per share in 2026.
The dividend payment, for comparison, totals just $2.84 per share. That's within the company's target payout ratio of 60% to 70%, and still leaves the company with an ability to invest between $10 billion to $11 billion per year in new projects.
As TD Bank points out in its research, "Midstream dynamics are localized." That means that the opportunities to scale natural gas transportation infrastructure aren't equally distributed geographically. Enbridge has acknowledged this reality, with its Tennessee Ridgeline, Blackcomb, Aspen Point, and Bay Runner pipelines -- new projects that are expected to enter service later this year -- all located near new major data center development. Enbridge's Tres Palacios and Vector pipeline expansion projects, meanwhile, are also located to take advantage of data center and LNG import opportunities.
Enbridge stock is up roughly 18% in value this year, rising an impressive 80% in value since the end of 2023. Given this performance, the dividend yield isn't as high as it has averaged in previous years. But the company hasn't cut its payout in more than 30 years. And despite rising demand for renewables, its core business remains in great health thanks to geopolitical disruptions and data center construction.
While a 5% dividend payout won't break the bank, this is one of the most reliable income stocks for investors looking for permanent passive income.

Wall Street expects a year-over-year increase in earnings on higher revenues when Williams Companies, Inc. (The) (WMB) reports results for the quarter ended June 2026. While this widely-known consensus outlook is important in gauging the company's earnings picture, a powerful factor that could impact its near-term stock price is how the actual results compare to these estimates.
The earnings report, which is expected to be released on August 3, might help the stock move higher if these key numbers are better than expectations. On the other hand, if they miss, the stock may move lower.

Exxon and Chevron give you everything
Chevron and Exxon are two of the world's largest energy companies. They are also highly reliable dividend stocks, with decades worth of annual dividend increases behind each one. Exxon's streak is a bit longer at 43 years, but Chevron's 38-year streak is hard to complain about. Right now, Chevron has the higher yield at 3.7%, while Exxon still offers a well-above-market 2.7% yield.
The big story here, however, is the businesses that back those yields and dividend streaks. Chevron and Exxon are both integrated energy companies, which means they provide investors exposure to the entire energy value chain, from the upstream (energy production) to the midstream (pipelines) to the downstream (chemical and refining). Their upstream operations have the biggest impact on financial results, but the midstream and downstream exposure helps to soften the large performance swings that often happen in the upstream.
Meanwhile, both companies operate in a very conservative fiscal manner. That is highlighted by their peer-leading debt-to-equity ratios of 0.2x for Exxon and 0.25x for Chevron. This allows both companies to lean on their balance sheets during energy market downturns, enabling them to continue supporting their businesses and dividends. And that will allow dividend lovers to sleep well at night knowing that their dividend checks will keep rolling in.
Enterprise and Enbridge let you cherry-pick the most reliable energy niche
The upstream and the downstream are both volatile, but the midstream tends to be rather boring. This is where both Enterprise and Enbridge operate, each owning giant North American energy infrastructure systems. They charge fees for the use of their assets, so the price of the commodities being moved isn't all that important to their financial results.
The benefit of this is clear in their dividend track records. Enterprise, a master limited partnership (MLP), has increased its distribution for 27 years, which is the shortest streak on this list, but basically as long as it has been public. Enbridge's dividend streak is 31 years in Canadian dollars. But what's really notable is their yields: Enterprise's is an ultra-high 5.7%, and Enbridge's is not far behind at 5%.
There is one caveat here. The yields these midstream giants offer will likely make up a large portion of an investor's return over time. They are, at best, slow-growing and steady giants. Dividend hikes are likely to edge out inflation over time, but not by much. So these are most appropriate for investors looking to maximize the passive income they generate today.
Don't ignore the energy sector
The on-again/off-again conflict in the Middle East has again shown that energy is a volatile sector. However, it has also shown how important energy is to the normal functioning of the global economy. Most investors should have some energy exposure in their portfolios. If you are a dividend lover, Chevron, Exxon, Enterprise, and Enbridge are four very strong options to consider given their impressive dividend histories. Your biggest decision will likely come down to how much direct energy exposure you are willing to take on.

4 Energy Stocks With 20+ Years of Consecutive Dividend Growth

Energy Transfer (NYSE: ET) has a lofty 6.5% distribution yield. That's actually higher than peers like Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD) and Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) that offer 5.6% and 5%, respectively. Even though Energy Transfer trades at a discount to these peers, I wouldn't buy it. Here's why.
Energy Transfer is more complicated
Enterprise Products Partners is a very straightforward business, operating a portfolio of midstream energy assets. It charges customers fees for the use of its assets, generating reliable cash flows to support its yield. Enbridge, which I own, is a little more complex. It owns midstream assets, regulated natural gas utilities, and renewable power assets. However, all of these businesses are fairly simple to understand and generate reliable cash flows to support the company's attractive yield.

Energy Transfer owns midstream assets and also serves as the managing partner for two publicly traded master limited partnerships (MLPs), Sunoco (NYSE: SUN) and USA Compression Partners (NYSE: USAC). So there are really three different businesses in the mix for investors to monitor. I don't see the need to take on the extra complexity, especially when Energy Transfer has done things that leave me with trust issues.
Energy Transfer: Trust is the linchpin issue
If the complexity of Energy Transfer's business isn't enough to keep you away, then consider two more facts. In 2006, Energy Transfer agreed to buy peer Williams (NYSE: WMB). It got cold feet and, in its effort to scuttle the deal, issued convertibles that appeared to protect the CEO from a dividend cut. The merger was called off, and the feared dividend cut didn't happen, but that move leaves me with a big question mark about the MLP's commitment to unitholders.
Then there was the 50% distribution cut in 2020, during the energy downturn that accompanied the COVID pandemic. The move was made to focus on debt reduction, and the distribution is growing again. But if you were counting on those distributions to pay your living expenses, you got a rude awakening right when you probably needed those distributions most. Neither Enterprise nor Enbridge cut their disbursements, with Enterprise increasing its distribution for 27 consecutive years and Enbridge increasing its dividend for 31 years.
Energy Transfer is charting a new path
To be fair, Energy Transfer has reduced debt and has started down a more conservative business path. The goal is now slow-and-steady growth, with a distribution growth target of 3% to 5% per year. It basically wants to be more like Enterprise and Enbridge. Given the history here, however, I'd rather just own Enterprise or Enbridge even though Energy Transfer has a higher yield.

Why I Wouldn't Touch This 6.5% Yielder, Even at a Discount

Enbridge offers exceptional stability and enjoys the same tailwinds as Enterprise.
Ares Capital stands to benefit from a potential interest rate increase.
You shouldn't significantly increase your position in a high-yield dividend stock without considering several factors. For example, it's not wise to buy so much of any given stock that it negatively impacts your overall portfolio diversification. You also need to evaluate the chances of a dividend cut in the near future.
That said, some high-yield dividend stocks are strong candidates for additional capital. Here are three you won't regret doubling up on right now.

1. Enterprise Products Partners
Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD) is a midstream energy leader that certainly checks off the high-yield box. The master limited partnership (MLP) pays a distribution yield of roughly 5.8%. Is this distribution safe? I think so.
For one thing, Enterprise has increased its distributions for 27 consecutive years. This track record underscores management's ability to navigate turbulence, given that the period includes the financial crisis of 2007 through 2009 and the COVID pandemic.
I also like Enterprise Products Partners' rock-solid balance sheet. It's no coincidence that the MLP has the highest credit rating in the midstream energy industry. Enterprise also has a very manageable debt leverage ratio of 3.2x.
Why load up on this pipeline stock now? The Iran war shows no signs of ending soon. Enterprise Products Partners' more than 50,000 miles of pipeline are critical in U.S. oil and gas exports, which should remain high as long as the conflict continues. Even if hostilities cease, the surging demand for natural gas driven by data centers should serve as a nice tailwind for Enterprise for years to come.
2. Enbridge
I'd put Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) in the same category as Enterprise Products Partners. It's also a midstream leader. Enbridge's forward dividend yield stands at roughly 5%. And its dividend looks quite safe, in my opinion.
Enbridge has an even more impressive streak of dividend hikes than Enterprise, having raised its dividend for 31 consecutive years. Its returns have trounced the S&P 500's (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) since the turn of the century.
The company's pipelines transport around 30% of the crude oil produced in North America and 20% of the natural gas consumed in the U.S. The same tailwinds that are helping Enterprise Products Partners also benefit Enbridge.
Importantly, though, Enbridge isn't just a pipeline operator. Thanks to key acquisitions, the company is also the largest natural gas utility in North America by volume. This business gives Enbridge added stability, which makes doubling up on the stock less scary.
3. Ares Capital
Not all of the good high-yield dividend stocks to buy right now are in the energy sector. Ares Capital (NASDAQ: ARCC) is the largest publicly traded business development company (BDC).
If you're looking for an especially juicy dividend, you might love Ares Capital. Its forward dividend yield tops 10.2%. Ordinarily, such a lofty yield would make me nervous. However, I think this BDC will be able to keep dividends flowing at least at the current level.
Ares Capital has consistently maintained or grown its dividend for 16 consecutive years. Its core earnings per share continue to exceed the dividends paid. What I really like is that Ares Capital has around $988 million of spillover income -- undistributed income that could be used to supplement future dividend distributions.
What about the concerns that software and services make up 22% of Ares Capital's portfolio and that artificial intelligence (AI) could disrupt software companies? Ares Capital has engaged a reputable consulting firm to perform an independent review of its software exposure. This evaluation found that the BDC's AI-related risk is "relatively limited." Around 85% of Ares Capital's software portfolio had a low risk of AI disruption.
There's one other reason I think doubling up on Ares Capital now could pay off. Futures reflect a probability of up to 91% of an interest rate hike by the end of this year. Ares Capital would benefit from higher rates, which would boost its net investment income.

Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) recent earnings report highlights how much the company is spending on AI and AI-related technology, such as self-driving cars and autonomous robots. Space Exploration Corporation (NASDAQ: SPCX) is also spending heavily on AI, as its prospectus made clear. The full extent of the company's plans will likely be a key focus of its upcoming earnings release, its first as a public company.
However, Elon Musk is clearly making big moves in the AI space. That includes building two massive AI data centers in Tennessee called Colossus I and II. Musk likes to make bold statements, but the size of the data centers justifies the names. To help power them, he purchased natural gas turbines and built an off-grid natural gas power plant in Mississippi. Nearby residents and regulators aren't happy and are suing, but it appears that the U.S. government is backing Musk.
Midstream companies win either way
The important investment story here isn't really what Elon Musk is doing. The story is why he is doing it. Natural gas is a reliable base-load power source. Natural gas power plants can be built relatively quickly. It is relatively efficient power, as well. As utilities and non-utilities look to produce more power, natural gas is likely to see increased demand.
Demand is the most important factor driving the financial results of midstream companies that transport natural gas, such as Enterprise, Enbridge, and Kinder Morgan. These businesses own the energy infrastructure that helps move natural gas, charging customers fees for the use of those assets. The price of the commodities moving through their energy systems is less important than the volume. More demand means more volume.
That helps on two fronts. First, it boosts current revenues and earnings. Second, it supports the need for additional energy infrastructure, which creates growth opportunities. Enterprise and Enbridge are both high-yield choices, with yields of 5.7% and 5%, respectively. Kinder Morgan's yield is 3.6%, which is still attractive, but below the 4% that many dividend investors seek. That said, Kinder Morgan claims to have the largest U.S. natural gas transmission network. It will be a material beneficiary if natural gas demand increases due to greater use to power AI data centers.
And this isn't just a U.S. phenomenon; demand for electricity is set to rise worldwide. Clean energy alone won't be enough to supply all that power, so an all-of-the-above approach is highly likely. All three of these North American midstream giants also own assets that support the export of natural gas. If Elon Musk's decision to turn to natural gas is any indication of the future, Enterprise, Enbridge, and Kinder Morgan have very solid outlooks.
Dig in and generate a reliable income stream for years to come
To be fair, Enterprise, Enbridge, and Kinder Morgan aren't growth stocks, like a Tesla or SpaceX. They are income stocks, which limits who will want to buy them. However, if you are a dividend investor, Elon Musk's decision to turn to fossil fuels to power his AI plans makes the midstream story all the more attractive and, perhaps just as important, durable.

Elon Musk is known for making bold statements. For example, the two data centers he's setting up in Tennessee are called Colossus I and Colossus II. What's notable for energy investors is that these artificial intelligence-focused data centers are powered by natural gas, much to the ire of nearby residents due to the gas turbines' noise and pollution concerns.
But the power has to come from somewhere, which is why investors will likely find high-yield midstream giants like Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD) and Enbridge (NYSE: ENB) of interest. However, even if you don't want to invest in carbon fuels, you can still find high-yield options like Brookfield Renewable Partners (NYSE: BEP). It is already working to support Microsoft's and Alphabet's AI data centers. The best part, all three have yields well over 4.5%.

Power demand is increasing at a rapid clip
Between 2005 and 2025, electricity demand increased by 10%. Between 2025 and 2045, however, demand is projected to increase by 60%. That's a step change in demand driven by a shift toward electricity as a power source and, at the same time, new technology, including electric cars and artificial intelligence (AI).
Meeting that demand won't be easy, and it is already causing problems for the AI industry. One of the quickest ways to develop new power sources is through natural gas turbines. There are drawbacks, as Mississippi residents are aware, since the off-grid power plants for one of Musk's Tennessee AI data centers are located there. Still, when it needed power fast, Space Exploration Corporation (NASDAQ: SPCX) did what it needed to do. And the U.S. government appears to be supporting the company's move to use natural gas turbines despite local pushback.
Natural gas is likely to be a key AI fuel for years to come. This makes Enterprise and Enbridge, two of the largest midstream businesses in North America, attractive high-yield investments. The key is that both make money by charging fees for the use of the energy infrastructure assets. So demand for energy is more important than the price of the energy being moved through their systems.
Enterprise's yield is 5.7%, the highest on this list. It has increased its distribution annually for 27 consecutive years. Enbridge's yield is 4.9%, and it has increased its dividend, in Canadian dollars, for 31 years. To be fair, these are indirect plays on the AI sector, since they rely on overall natural gas demand. But both are reliable, though slow-growing, high-yield investments.
Brookfield Renewable offers a cleaner AI play
If you don't want to own a carbon-focused business, you can still buy a high-yield energy supplier to the AI sector in Brookfield Renewable Partners. This business owns a global portfolio of clean energy assets, including hydroelectric, solar, wind, storage, and nuclear. It operates outside of the regulated utility framework, selling power directly to companies using long-term contracts. As noted above, it has agreements with Microsoft and Google to supply power to their data centers.
Brookfield Renewable Partners' distribution yield is 4.9%. The distribution has been increased regularly for a decade, noting that the business isn't as old as the two midstream businesses highlighted above. That said, there is an important difference here. Brookfield Renewable actively manages its portfolio, so it is always buying and selling assets. Enterprise and Enbridge tend to build (or buy) assets and then hang on to them for a long time. Investors who choose Brookfield Renewable should probably pay closer attention to quarterly results to stay on top of portfolio developments.
Power is the ultimate AI pick-and-shovel play
When you step back, AI is really just a fancy computer program. It can't "live" without electricity. That makes power a key supply story and one that won't simply go away once an AI data center has been built, because power will always be required to keep the AI running. High-yield natural gas pipeline operators like Enterprise and Enbridge are a good way to play electricity demand growth. Brookfield Renewable is another, for those who prefer to avoid carbon fuels. All three offer big yields backed by reliable cash flows.

Consistent dividend payouts
Enbridge uses an all-of-the-above energy strategy through four core businesses:
Liquids pipelines
Natural gas pipelines
Gas utilities and storage
Renewable energy
Its gas and oil operations are massive, as Enbridge transports roughly 20% of the natural gas consumed in the U.S.and around 30% of the crude oil produced in North America.
With its assets, Enbridge is eyeing over 50 potential data center opportunities that would require natural gas and is expected to give the go-ahead on some projects in 2026 and 2027.
For renewable energy, Meta Platforms is one of the company's big-name customers. In 2025, Meta signed a contract to use all the solar energy produced at a facility under construction in Texas. Then, in May, Enbridge announced it was developing a battery energy storage and solar project to support Meta's data center operations in Wyoming.
In terms of passive income, Enbridge is a reliable dividend payer, with more than 70 years of payouts. It hasn't qualified as a Dividend King by increasing its dividend payout for 50 consecutive years, but it is on its way to becoming one, with 31 consecutive years of dividend increases. As of this writing, the dividend payout yields 5%.
A shorter track record but a bigger yield
Natural gas is the third-largest source of electricity for data centers worldwide, according to the International Energy Agency. With over 140,000 miles of pipeline and related infrastructure in 44 states, Energy Transfer is in the driver's seat for capitalizing on that demand.
It's already doing so, with an agreement to supply natural gas to three of Oracle's data centers. Both companies, however, are facing a recent setback: New Mexico regulators have rejected Energy Transfer's proposed pipeline across the state, which could delay Oracle's Project Jupiter data center from launching. According to a Bloomberg report, Oracle said the project remains on schedule.
It also has an indirect relationship with Meta, as it will supply gas to Entergy Louisiana, a subsidiary of Entergy, which will supply power for a data center project Meta has in the area. In addition, Enbridge announced in its 2026 first-quarter earnings report that it will provide natural gas transportation services to Nexus Data Centers for its artificial intelligence hyperscale campus.
For passive income, Energy Transfer doesn't have the same history as Enbridge, with decades of dividend payouts or consecutive dividend increases. But its dividend payout currently yields a hefty 6.6%, well above Enbridge's 5%.
Picking the dividend stock winner
Both companies could be portfolio considerations, but for passive income, I would pick Enbridge over Energy Transfer. While Energy Transfer's dividend payout offers a higher yield, Enbridge has history on its side as not only a reliable dividend payer for more than 70 years but also a reliable dividend increaser. That's exactly what you want with a passive income investment.

And one particular oil and gas pipeline name proves it. Better still, it could continue proving it to patient newcomers. That company is Enbridge (NYSE: ENB).
The business is simple enough: It owns and operates over 18,000 miles of crude oil and natural gas pipelines in Canada and the U.S., handling nearly 5 billion barrels/equivalent every year.
Unlike the energy industry's explorers and refiners, though, Enbridge isn't affected by the price of the gas or oil it transports. It simply charges an ever-rising fee for the amount of product pushed through its pipes.
As long as North America continues consuming crude oil and natural gas, Enbridge continues generating revenue -- which turns into profits, which turn into dividends. That's how the company has not only paid a quarterly dividend like clockwork for decades, but has also raised its annual per-share payout every year for the past 31 years -- and by more than a little. Since 1995, the dividend has risen by an average of 9% per year.
You wouldn't have needed to accept those dividend payments, too. The chart below illustrates the upshot of reinvesting any dividend payments on an initial investment of $10,000 in Enbridge made 30 years ago. Today, that position would be worth more than $228,000.
Past performance is no guarantee of future results, but past performance is a reasonable indication of what's likely in the future. And it's not like demand for natural gas or crude oil is drying up anytime soon. Enbridge could conceivably repeat the feat over the next 30 years.
More than anything, though, don't dismiss the impact of compounding provided by steady cash payments, even if they seem small at the time.

Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD), Enbridge (NYSE: ENB), and NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) are three monster dividend stocks with strong track records, durable competitive advantages, and long-term growth prospects that should continue putting cash in your pockets for the foreseeable future. Here's why investors should be able to confidently buy and hold them through at least 2036.
1. A cash machine with a 5.7% yield
Enterprise Products Partners is arguably the gold standard in the energy infrastructure space. The company operates more than 50,000 miles of pipelines, storage facilities, and export terminals located throughout North America, helping bring natural gas and liquids to the global marketplace. It's also a master limited partnership (MLP), a unique business structure that requires a special tax form, called a K-1.
The business functions like a toll road, generating revenue from fees it charges for materials flowing through its pipes. The fees are tied to long-term contracts, which protect the company from fluctuating commodity prices. Enterprise Products Partners isn't invincible if the entire industry slows down, but there's always a baseline level of consumption because the economy never stops.
As an MLP, Enterprise Products Partners can distribute large sums of cash to its unitholders, the MLP term for shareholders. That's how you wind up with a dependable 5.7% yield. The payout ratio is actually quite conservative, at just 57% of the company's trailing 12-month distributable cash flow. That leaves money for capital expenditures to help capitalize on rising energy production and export activity over the coming years.
2. A diversified energy juggernaut
Enbridge is one of the largest energy companies in North America. Its business combines liquids, pipelines, gas utilities, and renewable energy assets to offer investors a little bit of everything the energy sector has to offer. It also diversifies the company's revenue streams, making Enbridge a dependable dividend stock that yields 5.1% and has grown its dividend by an average of 9% annually over the past 30 years.
The company is an essential cog for the U.S. and Canadian economies. Enbridge transports roughly 30% of the crude oil produced in North America and about 20% of the natural gas consumed by the United States. Virtually none of the business is exposed to commodity prices, and roughly 80% of its EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) is protected from inflation by price escalators.
Management maintains a targeted dividend payout ratio of 60%-70% of distributable cash flow, leaving a generous financial buffer in the event the business experiences an unexpected downturn. That doesn't seem too likely at this point; Enbridge anticipates growing at an annualized rate of about 5% as energy demand continues to rise.
3. An energy behemoth forming
NextEra has ridden the secular growth trend in renewable energy for decades, becoming one of the world's largest producers of wind and solar power. It also operates Florida Power & Light, America's largest electric power utility. It offers a lucrative one-two punch that has driven the stock to market-beating returns and many years of dividend growth.
It also hasn't prevented NextEra from swinging for the fences. The company has agreed to merge with Dominion Energy in a blockbuster deal worth more than $66 billion. With Dominion in the fold, NextEra would expand its empire beyond Florida into North and South Carolina and Virginia, the country's primary data center hub. It will position NextEra front and center for growth as data center ramps up electricity consumption over the next decade.
The merger is expected to close later next year. Such large deals are also risky because all the pieces must fit together well, and that can take time. NextEra increased its dividend by 10% earlier this year, perhaps a vote of confidence in the company's bright future. Management believes the combined entity will grow earnings by 9% annually through at least 2032, enough growth to make NextEra a no-brainer to buy and hold at the stock's current dividend yield of 2.8%.
