What agentic coding tools do well is quickly create user interfaces and core features. What it doesn't handle is long-term maintenance, governance, compliance, and future integrations. It's never been that difficult for an organization to create its own proprietary software, but the maintenance and responsibility of keeping up with regulatory, application programming interface (API), and cybersecurity changes generally don't make it worthwhile.
At the same time, AI agents are only as good as the data they have access to within an organization. Instead of replacing the SaaS companies that are tightly integrated with their customers' data and workflows, it makes much more sense for these companies to bring AI features to their customers.
This is why both ServiceNow (NYSE: NOW) and Salesforce (NYSE: CRM), regardless of their recent price action, both look well positioned to be long-term AI winners, not losers. However, the question is which stock looks like the better buy in the age of agentic AI? Let's take a closer look at both.
ServiceNow: Becoming an AI orchestration platform
ServiceNow's platform just doesn't sit on top of data; it's basically the internal plumbing information that technology (IT) departments use to run their organizations' entire software stacks. Its configuration management database (CMDB) is deeply embedded within its customers' workflows, becoming an essential system of record built on top of years of proprietary business logic, audit trails, and custom security permissions. It's not something that can easily be ripped and replaced, or replicated.
With the introduction of its AI Control Tower and recent cybersecurity acquisitions of Armis and Veza to bolster its position around rights permissions and asset visibility, ServiceNow is looking to become a leader in agentic AI orchestration. As AI agents begin to proliferate, this has the potential to be a huge growth driver for the company.
Following a post-earnings sell-off, the stock trades at a forward price-to-sales (P/S) multiple of 6 and a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple of 22, while growing its revenue by around 20%.
Salesforce: The ideal launching pad for agentic AI
Few SaaS companies have done as good a job of preparing themselves for agentic AI as Salesforce. Instead of just adding AI tools on top of its software, the company actively went out and positioned its platform to become an ideal AI agent launching pad. As noted above, AI agents are only as good as the data they have access to, and Salesforce has made sure it can be the master of its customers' data.
This starts with the introduction of its Data 360 solution, which uses zero-copy technology to bring in data from cloud providers and data warehouses, like Snowflake, without having to transfer it to its system. It then acquired master data management company Informatica to be able to clean up and structure this data, setting up its Agentforce platform to be one of the leading agentic AI solutions.
From a valuation standpoint, the stock trades at a forward P/S multiple of 3.7 and a forward P/E of 14. It is projecting low double-digit revenue growth over the next several years.
The verdict
I like both stocks and own both. However, if I were to choose only one, I'd pick ServiceNow. I think the company is more embedded with its customers and that the opportunity it has with AI orchestration could be huge. Meanwhile, it is the faster grower and is still trading at a great valuation.

Salesforce vs. ServiceNow: Which AI Stock Is the Better Buy?

Technology stocks experienced a wild ride in the first quarter of 2026. Artificial intelligence (AI) went from a catalyst boosting share prices to a cause for the "Great Rotation" away from the sector this year. Wall Street became concerned that AI might dismantle existing business models of several companies, particularly those in the software-as-a-service (SaaS) sector.
With the arrival of Q2, the Great Rotation already appears to be over. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite achieved a record high close on April 15 and an intraday high on April 24 after plunging into correction territory in Q1.

Even so, some great companies enjoying growth thanks to AI remain available at attractive prices. Three stocks in this camp are Salesforce (NYSE: CRM), Workiva (NYSE: WK), and SentinelOne (NYSE: S).
Reasons to consider Salesforce stock
Wall Street sees AI agents taking over the work of customer service representatives, one of Salesforce's key markets. This was a factor in investors dumping the company's shares during the Great Rotation.
AI is expected to significantly transform the customer service sector, but Salesforce has already taken action to maintain its relevance with clients. It unveiled its own AI agents through the Agentforce brand in 2024. In fact, it's actively helping clientele adopt AI.
Accelerating AI adoption means customers don't need to leave Salesforce to bring the technology to their organizations. Moreover, the company's AI not only helps clients reduce costs and improve efficiencies, it also helps to grow revenue. Salesforce is using AI agents to follow up on sales leads that were once ignored due to a lack of manpower.
The tech titan's efforts are paying off. It announced record revenue of $11.2 billion for its fiscal fourth quarter 2026, ended Jan. 31, up 12% year over year. In a sign that customers are embracing its AI offerings, Agentforce adoption is rising quickly; the number of accounts using AI jumped 50% in Q4 compared to Q3.
Why Workiva stock is a buy
Workiva's software platform helps businesses with financial reporting and compliance with regulatory requirements. The Great Rotation punished the company as shares plunged nearly 40% year to date through April 27. The sell-off was driven by the fear that AI would disrupt Workiva's SaaS-based business.
The reality is more nuanced. Workiva's role in supporting CFOs is not easily replaced by nascent AI rivals. The company is also ensuring that doesn't happen with AI capabilities integrated into its platform. This streamlines work for customers and delivers AI-powered insights for decision-making while protecting sensitive financial data.
I became interested in Workiva after New York-based hedge fund 13D Management scooped up over 50,000 shares worth nearly $4.5 million. Digging into the company, I found a thriving business.
Workiva's Q4 sales of $239 million represented 20% year-over-year growth. Its net income of $11.8 million is a significant reversal from a net loss of $8.8 million in the previous year.
One of Wall Street's concerns over SaaS companies is that revenue is reliant on the number of users. As AI removes users, revenue is expected to drop. Workiva doesn't charge based on users. Its fees depend on how customers use the platform, such as the number of features they want to access. For example, if a client needs to add carbon credits tracking, Workiva provides this.
SentinelOne's AI resilience
SentinelOne integrated AI into its cybersecurity platform from the ground up, years before the technology's boom in the stock market. It was one of the reasons why I invested in the company long ago.
Its shares were hit hard during the Great Rotation, falling to a 52-week low of $11.81 on April 10. Wall Street was spooked after AI giant Anthropic released an artificial intelligence agent capable of identifying software vulnerabilities, causing a widespread sell-off in cybersecurity stocks.
The fears are overblown because protection against cyberattacks is critical in today's digital-dependent society, making SentinelOne's services a necessity for its customers. Moreover, its status as an AI cybersecurity platform strengthens its position amid new, unproven AI competitors.
The company's excellent performance indicates customers remain loyal to its AI-powered platform. SentinelOne hit $1 billion in revenue, a 22% year-over-year increase, in its 2026 fiscal year ended Jan. 31. The company expects another year of strong growth in fiscal 2027, forecasting sales of $1.2 billion.
SentinelOne, along with Workiva and Salesforce, have seen share price valuations reach low points in 2026 as illustrated by their forward price-to-sales ratios (P/S).
The chart shows all three experienced substantial drops in their forward sales multiples this year, suggesting their stocks are at attractive prices. Although SentinelOne and Salesforce have seen a recent rise in forward P/S, both remain at low levels compared to the past year.
Given that Salesforce, Workiva, and SentinelOne are all achieving revenue growth bolstered by the AI tailwind, their recent price corrections offer a compelling opportunity to buy their stocks for the long term.

Sportradar Group AG (SRAD) came out with a quarterly loss of $0.02 per share versus the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.06. This compares to earnings of $0.07 per share a year ago. These figures are adjusted for non-recurring items.
This quarterly report represents an earnings surprise of -134.13%. A quarter ago, it was expected that this company would post earnings of $0.1 per share when it actually produced earnings of $0.01, delivering a surprise of -90%.
Over the last four quarters, the company has surpassed consensus EPS estimates just once.
Sportradar Group, which belongs to the Zacks Internet - Software industry, posted revenues of $405.5 million for the quarter ended March 2026, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3.75%. This compares to year-ago revenues of $327.4 million. The company has not been able to beat consensus revenue estimates over the last four quarters.
The sustainability of the stock's immediate price movement based on the recently-released numbers and future earnings expectations will mostly depend on management's commentary on the earnings call.
Sportradar Group shares have lost about 41.4% since the beginning of the year versus the S&P 500's gain of 4.8%.
What's Next for Sportradar Group?
While Sportradar Group has underperformed the market so far this year, the question that comes to investors' minds is: what's next for the stock?
There are no easy answers to this key question, but one reliable measure that can help investors address this is the company's earnings outlook. Not only does this include current consensus earnings expectations for the coming quarter(s), but also how these expectations have changed lately.
Empirical research shows a strong correlation between near-term stock movements and trends in earnings estimate revisions. Investors can track such revisions by themselves or rely on a tried-and-tested rating tool like the Zacks Rank, which has an impressive track record of harnessing the power of earnings estimate revisions.
Ahead of this earnings release, the estimate revisions trend for Sportradar Group was mixed. Salesforce's revenues are expected to be $11.06 billion, up 12.5% from the year-ago quarter.

Sportradar Group AG (SRAD) Reports Q1 Loss, Misses Revenue Estimates

ServiceNow’s NOW strong subscription growth continues to reinforce confidence in its long-term prospects. In the first quarter of 2026, subscription revenues increased 22% year over year to $3.671 billion, underscoring broad platform demand as customers lean into AI-enabled workflow automation. At constant currency (cc), subscription revenues increased 19% year over year to $3.57 billion. The reported quarter confirmed that subscription revenues remain the core growth engine, supported by strong renewals, expanding deal sizes, and increasing AI-led monetization.
NOW management highlighted robust expansion in high-value contracts, including 16 deals above $5 million in net new annual contract value (ACV) and accelerating adoption of AI-driven products. This is translating into strong forward visibility, with current remaining performance obligations increasing 22.5% year-over-year to $12.6 billion, supporting near-term subscription revenue conversion.
Subscription revenue growth is increasingly tied to AI monetization and pricing innovation. Management noted that roughly 50% of net new business now comes from non-seat-based pricing models, including consumption-based elements, signaling a structural shift in how subscription revenue scales. AI products such as Now Assist are seeing rapid uptake, with management indicating demand is ahead of expectations and contributing to upsell activity across the installed base. The company has $8 billion of current deferred revenue on the balance sheet and $27.7 billion in total remaining performance obligations, underscoring multi-year revenue visibility.
ServiceNow raised its full-year subscription revenue outlook to approximately $15.7–$15.8 billion, implying roughly 21% cc growth. On a non-GAAP basis, subscription revenues are expected to grow between 20.5% and 21%. Management expects additional acceleration from the Armis acquisition and continued AI-driven expansion, despite modest geopolitical headwinds.
NOW Faces Tough Competition
ServiceNow is facing stiff competition from the likes of Salesforce CRM and Atlassian TEAM.
Salesforce is strengthening its position in the subscription-led landscape with its AI-first platform strategy. Its Agentforce, Data Cloud and Slack create a unified ecosystem that drives recurring revenue growth and large enterprise deals. CRM benefits from embedding AI into workflows across sales and service, boosting efficiency and customer value. With strong adoption of AI-driven offerings and expansion into ITSM, Salesforce is increasingly competing with ServiceNow while enhancing its subscription-based growth model.
Atlassian continues to build strength in the subscription-led landscape through its cloud-based “system of work” platform. It benefits from a product-led model, strong enterprise adoption and growing cloud revenues, driving recurring subscriptions. TEAM’s AI-powered tools like Jira, Rovo and Teamwork Graph enhance workflows and collaboration, supporting long-term customer retention. With flexible pricing and rising enterprise deals, the company is expanding into IT workflows, positioning itself as a strong competitor in subscription-driven growth.
NOW’s Share Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates
ServiceNow shares have dropped 41.2% year to date, underperforming the broader Zacks Computer and Technology sector’s return of 8.8%. In comparison, shares of Salesforce and Atlassian have dropped 32.8% and 55.9%, respectively.

Who is Michael Burry, and why should investors pay attention to him?
Burry is not your ordinary money manager. A former physician turned self-taught investor, he is best known for founding the hedge fund Scion Asset Management (which he recently shut down). During his tenure running Scion, Burry delivered spectacular returns following an early call on the subprime mortgage collapse. His story was later dramatized in the book and feature film The Big Short.
Burry's outspoken rhetoric and forensic approach to stock picking have garnered him a loyal following. He is known to spend countless hours poring over balance sheets, modeling cash-flow scenarios, and assessing competitive moats. In other words, he dives into the details rather than chasing narratives.
This is why, when he publicly critiques one AI sector darling and pivots toward another, it is not just a casual rotation. It is a signal that he thinks valuations are aggressively diverging from underlying economics.
Two software platforms with two very different philosophies
At first glance, Palantir and Salesforce look like cousins in the enterprise software industry. Both companies develop cloud-based platforms that help large organizations make sense of vast amounts of data. Over the last few years, each has poured billions of dollars into new generative AI features. And yet underneath the surface, Palantir and Salesforce have strikingly different DNA.
Palantir's strength is rooted in deep, ontology-driven data integrations. The company's Foundry and Gotham platforms act as digital command centers, fusing disparate data sources into real-time, operational intelligence. Throughout the AI revolution, the company has won massive deals with the U.S. government and Fortune 500 companies precisely because its systems are designed to thrive in high-stakes, messy environments where off-the-shelf tools often fall short.
By contrast, Salesforce is the undisputed market leader in customer relationship management. Its core platform unifies sales, professional services, marketing, and commerce into a single customer view that's supercharged by Einstein AI. Where Palantir excels at bespoke, mission-critical analytics, Salesforce dominates in standardizing high-volume commercial workflows.
The similarity between Palantir and Salesforce is obvious: Both companies sell recurring software subscriptions and are racing to embed large language models into their ecosystems.
The difference is in application. Palantir's edge lies in its depth, whereas Salesforce's advantage stems from ease of adoption. In other words, one platform feels like a custom-built supercomputer designed to conquer sophisticated problems, while the other feels like an indispensable operating system for facilitating everyday customer operations.
Valuation discipline in the "Age of AI" disruption
Both stocks have been punished lately, but for subtly different reasons, indexing on the same phenomenon.
The introduction of Claude CoWork and its peers has accelerated an idea that many growth investors were subconsciously fearing: AI agents that can draft emails, analyze pipelines, orchestrate campaigns, and even simulate entire sales cycles or business processes with minimal human oversight and input could render legacy enterprise software tools useless. Companies that once needed several specialized SaaS tools suddenly have a path to consolidation. In turn, subscription fatigue could swiftly result in IT budget cuts.
Palantir's lofty valuation multiples reflect sky-high expectations for the growth of its commercial Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP). The selling pressure seen in Palantir stock over the last couple of months suggests that investors are entertaining the idea that growth could fail to accelerate as dramatically as Wall Street expects.
On the other hand, Salesforce was already trading at a more reasonable valuation compared to Palantir, despite years of steady execution. Salesforce, with its massive installed base and proven ability to cross-sell AI modules into existing customer contracts, potentially offers a more visible near-term path to earnings growth. Against this backdrop, Burry might think Salesforce looks like a bargain.
For now, Burry has voted with his capital. Between the two software giants, Salesforce looks like the better value. His moves serve as a reminder to smart investors that in the SaaSpocalypse, the companies with the strongest economic moats and the most durable pricing power will endure.
While Salesforce's strength is in administrative tasks, Palantir's competitive edge is its ability to serve as the foundational data layer that will power the next decade of AI infrastructure, regardless of industry. Its ontology-first approach is better suited for an unstructured, multimodal data world that autonomous agents may never fully prosper in, despite their ubiquity. For this reason, I differ from Burry -- I see Palantir as the superior opportunity in the long run.

Three companies that look like good deals -- and that will likely benefit because of AI -- are Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Salesforce (NYSE: CRM), and Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG). Here's why these stocks are worth buying now.
Microsoft has been all-in on AI for years
If there's one software stock investors really shouldn't worry about in the AI age, it's Microsoft. The company has adapted quickly to artificial intelligence and was one of the early investors in OpenAI.
Microsoft owns an estimated 27% of OpenAI, which may come in handy when the company goes public later this year, and was quick to implement ChatGPT models into its Copilot service early on. That move helped Microsoft stay at the forefront of the AI boom, and it proved to its many enterprise customers that keeping their Microsoft 365 subscriptions is still a must-have move in the AI age.
What's more, Microsoft has adapted an approach to using new AI models for its services. The company recently began offering Claude as part of its Copilot service, and its commercial cloud users have access to it by default. This shows Microsoft's ability to adapt and implement rising AI models as they emerge, instead of just betting on one horse.
And finally, Microsoft is also working on its own AI models, aiming to develop a "superintelligence" by introducing new models over the next five years.
The average price-to-earnings ratio for the tech sector is just over 43, making Microsoft's trailing P/E ratio of 26.5 look like a steal right now.
Salesforce is on the right track
Tech investors have shunned Salesforce over the past year, pushing its shares down about 20%. But their pessimism is mostly based on fears that AI will disrupt the company, which doesn't appear to the case.
Consider that the company's sales rose 12% to $11.2 billion and earnings per share jumped 37% to $3.81 in the fourth quarter of 2026, both outpacing analysts' consensus estimates.
Importantly, Salesforce continues to make progress with its AI strategy. Since launching AI services, the company said it has completed 2.4 billion AI agent work units -- meaning instances in which customers used Agentforce to deliver real work. What's more, the company's Agentforce AI service exceeded $800 million in annual recurring revenue, up 169% from the year-ago quarter.
Salesforce has more than 150,000 customers, with most of the world's largest companies relying on its customer relationship management software. That reach won't easily be eroded, even by fancy new AI models. Salesforce software is built specifically for customer management, and its customers aren't likely to part ways with Salesforce just because some new AI emerges; the switching costs are just too high when managing so much important customer data.
Salesforce's stock has a trailing P/E ratio of just 24 right now, making this leading enterprise software company a significant bargain compared to the rest of the tech industry.
Alphabet's AI has a real advantage already
The early worries that Alphabet and its Google services would be left in the dust by AI companies now look like an overreaction. The company's Google Gemini is gaining real traction as a viable competitor to ChatGPT, and Claude and already has more than 750 million monthly active users.
And Gemini is about to get a big boost in users when Apple launches a new version of Siri later this year, with Gemini reportedly serving as the underlying AI model. Not only does this show just how competitive Gemini can be in this space -- billions of devices could use the new Siri -- but Alphabet will reportedly receive $1 billion annually from Apple.
More proof of Alphabet's AI success comes from the company's Google Cloud sales, which house the company's AI revenue and rose 48% in the fourth quarter to $17.7 billion. With Alphabet investing up to $185 billion in capital expenditures this year, mostly for AI data center infrastructure, more advanced AI models and additional AI sales are likely on the way.
And with Alphabet's shares having a trailing P/E ratio of just over 30 right now, the stock looks very attractive compared to the rest of the tech industry.

Morningstar Says Software Stocks Haven't Been This Undervalued In 3 Years. These 3 Look Like Good Deals.

While artificial intelligence (AI) stocks continue to be market darlings, the same can't be said for software stocks. Software-as-a-service (SaaS) stocks have been absolutely hammered this year, and there doesn't appear to be any let-up.
While many SaaS companies continue to put up solid revenue growth, few outside of Palantir have seen their growth accelerate due to AI tailwinds, as many of their customers try to navigate what AI means to their own businesses and what their roadmaps should look like. Stagnant or decelerating revenue growth, meanwhile, has helped fuel the bear argument that the software sector is ultimately an AI loser.

The bears believe Claude Code and similar agentic AI coding tools will allow organizations to easily create their own custom software. Meanwhile, they believe AI agents will eventually start to replace workers, noting that AI agents don't care about user interfaces (UIs), which helps erode the software moat. Even if this doesn't play out, at the very least, they think AI will lead to companies needing fewer software seat licenses.
The counter argument is that while AI is fast at generating code, it often isn't good at maintaining it. In a study done by Alibaba, the Chinese company found that 75% of code created by AI models failed in less than a year as they would sacrifice quality in favor of speed. Meanwhile, Claude Code has actually gotten worse after its release, with several customers publicly venting how security issues were popping up and how it could not be trusted.
While SaaS companies that are simple UI wrappers are likely vulnerable to AI, the ones that sit at the center of their customers' data and workflow are much better positioned and likely to survive. Organizations generally don't want to take on the added responsibility and risks of their software failing or an AI agent going rogue and causing damage. There is still comfort in having a software vendor maintain the stability and safety of their core software systems. Meanwhile, as AI agents do become more prevalent, the old seat-based pricing models will likely evolve into usage or hybrid seat and consumption models.
Let's look at two SaaS stocks that sit at the center of their customers' data that have strong upside potential.
ServiceNow: 85% upside
While its recent stock performance may not indicate it, ServiceNow (NYSE: NOW) is one of the best-positioned SaaS companies in the AI era. The company's configuration management database (CMDB) is generally the heart of its customers' technical infrastructure, and it is the orchestration tool and plumbing for their whole software stack. It's deeply embedded into its customers' workflow and data, and is an invaluable systems of record grounded in security permissions, custom business logic, and audit trails.
The company is still growing quickly, with revenue growth around 20%, and it has the potential to be a major player as an agentic AI orchestration platform with its new AI Control Tower solution. Put a 10 times price-to-sales (P/S) multiple on the stock, which is appropriate given its growth, and the stock would be $160, representing more than 85% upside.
Salesforce: 70% upside
One of the most proactive companies in the SaaS space to position itself for the age of agentic AI has been Salesforce (NYSE: CRM). Long a leader in breaking down data siloes between departments and being a core customer relationship management platform, the company has transformed itself to become the master of records for its customers' data. This is huge in and of itself when it comes to agentic AI, as AI agents need clean, structured data to pull from to avoid hallucinations.
Salesforce's introduction of its Data 360 solution brought with it zero-copy technology that can capture data from data warehouses and cloud providers without the time-consuming and expensive process of transferring it. The company then acquired Informatica to cleanse, structure, and govern all this data, making it the perfect agentic AI launch platform. The company had projected it can grow its revenue at a compound annual growth rate of about 11% through fiscal 2030.
Place a six times P/S multiple on the stock given its revenue growth outlook, and it would be a $300 stock, representing 70% upside.

2 AI Stocks With 85% and 70% Upside to Buy During a Software Bear Market

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Friday closed up +0.80%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.16%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +1.95%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) rose +0.72%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) rose +1.86%.
Stock indexes settled mostly higher on Friday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posting new all-time highs. Intel rose more than +23% to a record high to lead chipmakers higher after forecasting Q2 revenue of $13.8 billion to $14.8 billion, well above expectations of $13.04 billion. The surge in Intel has reignited optimism over the economic potential of artificial intelligence for semiconductor manufacturers. Software stocks also rallied on Friday, adding to the bullish momentum.

Stocks added to their gains Friday amid optimism that the US and Iran are moving toward talks after days of deadlock. President Trump said he will send two envoys to Pakistan this weekend for talks with Iran, and the New York Times reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will meet with a US envoy in Islamabad on Saturday.
Stocks maintained their gains on Friday as bond yields fell, following the Department of Justice (DOJ) announcement that it was dropping its investigation into Fed Chair Powell over cost overruns in the Federal Reserve's renovation. The ending of the DOJ probe into Fed Chair Powell may now persuade Senator Tillis to drop his opposition to appointing Fed nominee Warsh as the next Fed Chair, as Tillis had vowed to block Warsh’s confirmation unless the DOJ investigation was dropped.
Friday’s US economic news was supportive of stocks. The University of Michigan US Apr consumer sentiment index was revised upward by +2.2 to 49.8, stronger than expectations of 48.5. The University of Michigan US Apr 1-year inflation expectations were revised downward by -0.1 to 4.7% from 4.8%. The Apr 5-10 year inflation expectations were revised upward by +0.1 to a 6-month high of 3.5% from 3.4%.
The US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The US increased pressure on Iran with its naval blockade as it seeks to get Iran to agree to talks, while Israel and Lebanon are set to extend a ceasefire for three weeks.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) fell by more than -1% on Friday after Pakistani officials said a second round of US-Iran talks was expected. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
Earnings season thus far has been supportive of stocks. As of Friday, 80% of the 139 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
The markets are discounting a 1% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the April 28-29 policy meeting.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Friday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2-week low and closed down -0.19%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.33%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +0.97%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Friday closed up +5.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -2.0 bp to 4.304%. Jun T-notes recovered from early losses on Friday and moved higher, and the 10-year T-note yield fell from a 1.5-week high of 4.353% and moved lower. T-notes rebounded on Friday after WTI crude oil gave up a +1% advance and fell more than -1%, easing inflation concerns.
Gains in T-notes accelerated on Friday after the DOJ said it was dropping its investigation of Fed Chair Powell over building-renovation costs at the Federal Reserve. The ending of the investigation into Fed Chair Powell may persuade Senator Tillis to drop his opposition to appointing Fed nominee Warsh as the next Fed Chair, as Tillis had vowed to block Warsh’s confirmation unless the DOJ investigation was dropped. Speculation is that Mr. Warsh will take a more dovish tone to Fed policy than outgoing Fed Chair Powell.
European government bond yields moved lower on Friday. The 10-year German bund yield fell -1.5 bp to 2.994%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell from a 4-week high of 4.993% and finished down by -2.7 bp to 4.912%.
The German Apr IFO business confidence index fell -1.9 to a nearly 6-year low of 84.4, weaker than expectations of 85.7.
ECB Governing Council member Peter Kazimir said the war in Iran might necessitate a slight increase in ECB interest rates.
UK Mar retail sales ex-autos rose +0.2% m/m, stronger than expectations of no change m/m.
Swaps are discounting a 9% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on April 30.
US Stock Movers
Intel (INTC) closed up more than 23% to lead chip stocks higher and gainers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 after forecasting Q2 revenue of $13.8 billion to $14.8 billion, well above expectations of $13.04 billion. Also, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed up more than +13%, and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed up more than +11%. In addition, KLA Corp (KLAC) closed up more than +5%, and Nvidia (NVDA) closed up more than +4% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials. Finally, Lam Research (LRCX) and Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +3%, and Applied Materials (AMAT) and ASML Holding NV (ASML) closed up more than +2%.
Software stocks rallied on Friday, helping support gains in the broader market. ServiceNow (NOW) closed up more than +6%, and Atlassian (TEAM) and Cadence Design Systems (CDNS) closed up more than +5%. Also, (WDAY) closed up more than +4%, and Intuit (INTU) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT), Salesforce (CRM), Adobe Systems (ADBE), and Autodesk (ADSK) closed up more than +2%.
Organon & Co. (OGN) closed up more than +32% after the Economic Times reported that Sun Pharma is planning to submit a binding offer of $13 billion for the company.
Chemed Corp (CHE) closed up more than +10% after reporting Q1 adjusted EPS of $5.65, stronger than the consensus of $5.30.
Hims & Hers Health (HIMS) closed up more than +8% after JPMorgan Chase initiated coverage on the stock with a recommendation of overweight and a price target of $35.
Edwards Lifesciences (EW) closed up more than +5% after reporting Q1 adjusted EPS of 78 cents, better than the consensus of 73 cents.
Procter & Gamble (PG) closed up more than +2% after reporting Q3 net sales of $21.24 billion, above the consensus of $20.50 billion.
Principal Financial Group (PFG) closed up more than +2% after reporting Q1 adjusted operating EPS of $2.07, better than the consensus of $2.01.
Charter Communications (CHTR) closed down more than -25%, leading losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q1 EPS of $9.17, weaker than the consensus of $9.52.
Comcast (CMCSA) closed down more than -12% after Deutsche Bank downgraded the stock to hold from buy.
HCA Healthcare (HCA) closed down more than -9% after reporting Q1 net income of $1.62 billion, below the consensus of $1.63 billion.
Boyd Gaming (BYD) closed down more than -6% after reporting Q1 revenue of $997.4 million, below the consensus of $1 billion.
Eli Lilly (LLY) closed down more than -3% after weekly data showed total prescriptions for the company’s Zepbound obesity drug fell -2% compared to the prior week.

S&P 500 and Nasdaq Post Record Highs on Tech Stock Strength and Iran Diplomacy

Since the Great Recession in 2008, Michael Burry has been one of the more closely followed investors on Wall Street.
As many know, Burry was part of an elite group of investors that saw the housing bubble form in the lead-up to the Great Recession. Burry found ways to bet on the bubble popping by purchasing credit default swaps on mortgage bonds, which is essentially insurance that pays out if the bonds collapse.

Burry and his firm at the time, Scion Capital, would go on to make hundreds of millions on this bet. This series of events was depicted in the movie "The Big Short," in which Burry was played by Oscar-winner Christian Bale.
Today, Burry is no longer leading a fund but instead running his own Substack publication, which provides investors with a never-before-seen glimpse into the inner workings of his investment process.
Burry has been pounding the table on the embattled software sector and buying beaten-down names. Does Burry know something that Wall Street doesn't? The famed investor is buying a "Magnificent Seven" stock that is coming off its worst quarter since 2008.
Burry does not believe AI will completely take over
Burry recently announced in a post that he has taken a new position in Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), one of the largest stocks in the world by market cap. Burry said he sees an opportunity in "bombed out software and payment stocks" and is concerned about parts of the artificial intelligence sector.
While Microsoft is undoubtedly expected to be a beneficiary of AI, the stock seems to be facing headwinds driven by AI-related concerns and also how software will be impacted. In the first quarter of the year, the stock fell 23%, its worst performance since the Great Recession.
The purchase of Microsoft follows recent software-sector purchases by Burry, including PayPal, MSCI, and Salesforce.
While I don't have direct access to Burry's Substack, we know from previous reporting that Burry believes software has struggled due to what he calls a "reflexive positive feedback loop" between declining software stock prices and the stress on software debt associated with these companies. However, Burry does not believe this dynamic can continue for much longer.
While Burry did acknowledge that AI will have serious impacts on several software companies, he is not worried about the stocks he has chosen after conducting a forensic analysis.
Microsoft specifically has been impacted by broader AI concerns, such as high capital expenditures and elevated valuations. But even more specifically, investors have been disappointed by Microsoft's AI digital assistant Copilot, which is a big part of the company's strategy but has yet to gain the traction investors had hoped for.
On Microsoft's recentearnings call the company disclosed that it had 15 million paid Copilot seats, experiencing strong annual growth, but this is still only a small fraction of its paid Microsoft 365 users.
Now, supposedly, CEO Satya Nadella has taken charge of Copilot and is working on releasing new features and tools that are off to a good start, so this could be an area that becomes a growth engine, although customers already have many AI assistant options in this market.
Trading at about 25 times forward earnings, I would agree that investors can buy Microsoft here. The company is expected to benefit from AI, and has already seen tremendous revenue growth in its Azure cloud business.
It also continues to operate a diversified cohort of tech businesses that can benefit from AI, or continue their strong success if AI turns out not to be as impactful as expected.
