Noteworthy Tuesday Option Activity: DOCN, SBUX, COF

Capital One COF and Synchrony Financial SYF are major consumer lenders, primarily focusing on credit card and related financing. Both generate a large part of their revenues from interest income, transaction fees and customer spending.
While both target consumers and small businesses, SYF leans on retail and affinity partnerships, whereas COF operates more like a traditional bank with a broader credit card and auto lending portfolio.
As the Federal Reserve has started lowering interest rates, the question arises: which credit card firm, Capital One or Synchrony, is a better choice for investors? Let’s find out.
The Case for Capital One
In May 2025, Capital One acquired Discover Financial in a $35 billion all-stock deal, thus becoming the largest U.S. credit card issuer by balances. The deal expanded its payments network and gave it control of Discover’s network—one of only four in the United States—boosting interchange revenues and reducing reliance on Visa V and Mastercard MA. The merger is expected to deliver cost and revenue synergies while strengthening Capital One’s digital banking capabilities.
Over the years, the company has pursued a strategic acquisition strategy, with some of its notable acquisitions being ING Direct USA, HSBC's U.S. Credit Card Portfolio and TripleTree. These have been instrumental in transforming Capital One from a monoline credit card issuer into a diversified financial services firm with a significant presence in retail banking, commercial lending and digital banking platforms.
Though the company’s revenues declined marginally in 2020, the metric witnessed a five-year (2019-2024) CAGR of 6.5%. In the same time frame, net loans held for investment recorded a CAGR of 4.3%. The uptrend continued for both metrics during the first nine months of 2025. Capital One is likely to keep benefiting from relatively higher interest rates and a steady demand for credit card loans. As such, the company’s net interest income (NII) and net interest margin (NIM) have been rising. The company's NII witnessed a CAGR of 6% over the five years ended 2024. Also, NIM expanded to 6.88% in 2024 from 6.63% in 2023. The momentum continued for both NII & NIM in the first nine months of 2025.
Meanwhile, given the current tough operating backdrop and tariff-related ambiguity, Capital One faces headwinds in consumer spending and the auto lending business. As such, its asset quality will likely be under pressure. Also, the company spends heavily on marketing (almost 20% of the total operating expenses) and technology.
The Case for Synchrony Financial
Synchrony Financial stands out by leveraging its strong distribution channel to offer a broad range of products, including private-label credit cards and dual Cards for use on MasterCard and Visa networks. It has the potential to issue dual cards for use on the American Express and Discover networks, contributing to a more profitable and resilient business model.
Further, the company has been driving growth through targeted acquisitions and strategic partnerships that enhance digital capabilities and diversify offerings. In 2024, it acquired Ally Financial’s point-of-sale financing business, Ally Lending.
Moreover, the Allegro Credit acquisition expanded its presence in audiology and dental financing, while partnerships with PayPal, Venmo, LG Electronics, Mastercard, and others modernized payment experiences. Recent expansions with Ashley, American Eagle Outfitters and an alliance with Adobe Commerce further strengthened its ecosystem and e-commerce reach. It partnered with OnePay to power a new credit card program at Walmart, offering a smarter, embedded credit experience for U.S. shoppers.
Further, Syncrony Financial has a solid balance sheet. As of Sept. 30, 2025, it had $16.2 billion in cash and cash equivalents, up 10.4% from the end of 2024. Total borrowings were $14.4 billion. Given its earnings strength and solid liquidity position, the company’s enhanced capital distribution plans look sustainable.
Driven by these partnerships and strategic organic and inorganic efforts, SYF’s revenues witnessed a five-year CAGR of 2.6% (ended 2024). The trend reversed in the first nine months of 2025 on a year-over-year basis due to the absence of a one-time gain recorded last year.

Management anticipates net revenues to be in the range of $15-$15.1 billion for 2025 compared with the earlier guidance of $15-$15.3 billion. This downward revision of the higher end of the guidance was on account of higher Retailer Share Arrangements (RSAs) and lower loan receivables.
Synchrony Financial’s business model exposes it to credit risk, impacting its credit quality, due to a higher allowance for loan loss, especially in an economy grappling with inflationary pressures and higher-than-normal interest rates. The lingering macroeconomic headwinds are expected to weigh on its financials to some extent.
How Do Estimates Compare for COF & SYF?
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for COF’s 2025 and 2026 revenues implies year-over-year growth of 35.6% and 17.9%, respectively. Further, the consensus estimate for earnings indicates a 41% and 1.1% rise for 2025 and 2026, respectively. Earnings estimates for both years have been revised upward over the past week.

On the contrary, analysts are slightly less bullish on Synchrony Financial’s revenue prospects. The consensus mark for the company’s 2025 and 2026 revenues indicates a year-over-year rise of 2.7% and 4.6%, respectively. The consensus estimate for earnings suggests a 37.5% and 1% surge for 2025 and 2026, respectively. Earnings estimates for 2025 were revised upward over the past week, while for 2026, the same have been revised downward.

Over the past three months, COF and SYF have risen 13.8% and 32%, respectively. Nonetheless, the weak job market and relatively higher interest rates have kept these firms under pressure, while improving clarity on tariffs and trade has offered some support.

Valuation-wise, COF is currently trading at a 12-month forward price-to-earnings (P/E) of 10.95X, higher than its five-year median of 9.03X. SYF stock is currently trading at a 12-month forward P/E of 8.47X, which is also higher than its five-year median of 7.45X.

Capital One and Synchrony Financial are prominent U.S. credit card issuers and consumer lenders. Both are taking proactive steps to navigate the uncertain macroeconomic backdrop and relatively higher interest rates.
Synchrony Financial has a robust liquidity position and a strong distribution channel alongside diverse revenue streams. Nonetheless, higher RSAs and expenses and lower loans receivable are likely to hurt top-line growth, which is reflected in management guidance. Also, in this volatile environment, the allowance for loan losses is likely to remain elevated, impacting profitability in the near term.
On the other hand, Capital One has wrapped up one of its biggest deals this year. This, along with its strategic partnerships and higher credit card demands, is likely to support its growth. Additionally, relatively higher interest rates will continue to aid NII and NIM. Though it's trading at a premium compared with SYF, its valuation remains justified on the back of bullish analyst sentiments and growth trajectory. Noteworthy Thursday Option Activity: ARWR, RBLX, COF

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (“FDIC”) has filed a lawsuit against Capital One COF, alleging that the bank paid about $100 million less than it should have to help bail out depositors of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, which both collapsed in 2023. This was reported by Reuters.
The FDIC took control of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in March 2023 and estimated in June 2024 that it would recover $18.6 billion from 111 banks through special assessments. Banks with less than $5 billion in assets were exempted from these charges.
In sync with this, Capital One estimated in July 2025 that it might have to reserve an additional $200 million.
Details About the FDIC Lawsuit Against COF
The main concern of the dispute is whether Capital One understated its level of uninsured deposits by excluding a $56 billion position between two subsidiaries from regulatory filings that describe its financial condition.
The FDIC relies on banks’ deposit figures to determine the special assessments it imposes to recover losses to its deposit insurance fund after bank failures.
In its countersuit, the FDIC argued that leaving out the $56 billion balance caused Capital One to compute its special assessment at $324.84 million instead of the correct $474.08 million. The agency said roughly $99.4 million is still outstanding.
"There are no time machines when it comes to special assessments, and the subsidiary's funds were deposits held at the bank for which the subsidiary already received the benefit of FDIC deposit insurance," the FDIC said.
This lawsuit against Capital One comes just two months after the bank filed its own lawsuit accusing the FDIC of overcharging it by $149.2 million.
Capital One’s Past Legal Issues
The lawsuit adds to the company’s growing legal troubles. In September, a bipartisan group of 18 U.S. states proposed the rejection of COF’s $425 million settlement deal with depositors who accused the bank of using deceptive practices to make them think that they were earning the highest interest rate available from the company's online banking arm during the rising rate cycle.
In August, the New York Attorney General, Letitia James, filed a lawsuit against the Capital One-owned Zelle app, alleging that the payment platform failed to implement crucial safety measures, allowing fraudsters to steal more than $1 billion from consumers.

Regulatory Probes Faced by Other Banks
In September, UBS Group AG UBS agreed to pay €835 million ($986.8 million) to resolve a long-running French tax case concerning its cross-border business activities between 2004 and 2012.
UBS Group will pay a €730 million ($862.7 million) fine and €105 million ($124.1 million) in civil damages to the French state. The company stated that the matter is fully provisioned and its resolution is consistent with its strategy of addressing legacy issues in the best interests of all stakeholders.
Similarly, in August, Deutsche Bank AG DB was fined HK$23.8 million ($3.05 million) by Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) for multiple regulatory breaches, including fee overcharging, misclassification of product risk and failure to disclose investment banking relationships in research reports.
The disciplinary action stems from investigations triggered by Deutsche Bank’s self-reports submitted between December 2020 and December 2023. The SFC found that between November 2015 and November 2023, the bank overcharged clients approximately $39 million in management and custodian fees. These overcharges resulted from failure to apply discounted fee rates and misstatements in fund valuations.

FDIC Sues Capital One Over Special Assessment Charges Dispute

Capital One COF is entering a more challenging credit environment as rising net charge-offs (NCOs) and delinquencies signal mounting pressure on its consumer portfolios. Per the latest SEC filing, October 2025 brought a clear uptick in asset-quality strain.
Domestic credit card NCOs climbed to 4.77%, an increase of 42 basis points (bps) from September, while delinquencies rose 10 bps to 4.99%. Both figures are above pre-pandemic norms. In February 2020, NCOs were 4.68% and delinquencies 3.88%. Auto credit trends were somewhat balanced, with NCOs rising 21 bps to 1.67% but delinquencies edging 2 bps lower to 4.97%.
Loan growth offered a slight offset, as lending activity improved modestly in October. Capital One’s loans held for investment in domestic credit cards reached $254.2 billion, while its auto book increased to $82.5 billion. Yet the firm’s increasing exposure to consumer stress is reflected in its rising provisions. For the nine months ended Sept. 30, 2025, provisions for credit losses surged 82% year over year to $16.5 billion, partly influenced by the recently closed Discover Financial acquisition.
The broader K-shaped economic recovery is amplifying this divergence in credit performance. Affluent borrowers remain resilient, but lower-income and subprime segments, where Capital One has significant exposure, are feeling greater financial strain. This is leading to higher delinquencies, elevated defaults and continued pressure on NCOs. The trends are likely to persist in the near term, given inflationary headwinds and uneven macroeconomic improvement.
Nonetheless, Capital One retains meaningful strengths, including strategic scale from its acquisitions, robust credit card operations and the tailwind of relatively high interest rates supporting revenue momentum. Its strong balance sheet and targeted growth initiatives help buffer the impact of deteriorating credit metrics.
How COF Stacks Up Against Peers in Card NCO
Capital One’s two peers – American Express AXP and Synchrony Financial SYF – also reported a rise in NCO rates in October.
American Express’s NCO rate for the U.S. consumer card loans rose to 2.2% in October 2025 from 1.9% in September. Further, American Express witnessed a 1.2% increase in U.S. consumer card LHI to $95.2 billion.
Similarly, Synchrony Financial recorded an adjusted NCO rate of 5.3%, up 20 bps from September. Synchrony Financial’s loan receivables at the end of October were $100.4 billion, up marginally.

Capital One shares have risen 12.1% this year, massively underperforming the industry’s growth of 33.6%.

Capital One's NCO Rates Rise: How Will This Impact its Asset Quality?

As the Federal Reserve has lowered interest rates by 50 basis points (bps) this year to counter a weakening labour market and support economic growth, with expectations of additional cuts ahead, Capital One COF remains in focus due to its asset-sensitive balance sheet. Amid an evolving rate environment, the company’s net interest income (NII) remains the biggest revenue source.
Capital One’s NII recorded at a 6% CAGR over the five-year period through 2024 on the back of higher interest rates in 2022 and 2023. This momentum persisted through the first nine months of 2025, even as the Fed lowered rates by a cumulative 100 bps in 2024. The upside was driven by robust demand for credit card loans, improving funding mix and lower funding costs, which offset the lower yields. Also, the Discover Financial acquisition in May 2025 offered support.
During the third quarter of 2025, U.S. credit card balances rose by $24 billion sequentially and 5.75% from the prior-year quarter to $1.23 trillion, per Federal Reserve Bank of New York data. The trend is likely to continue given the rising credit card demand among retailers. Capital One has been expanding its credit card loan portfolio to boost NII. The company’s credit card loans and net loans held for investments (LHI) witnessed a five-year CAGR of 4.9% and 4.3%, respectively, for the year ended 2024. The momentum continued in the first nine months of 2025.
Thus, demand for credit card loans, improving funding mix, stabilising funding costs and Capital One’s efforts to scale its business are expected to drive NII higher despite lower yields due to interest rate cuts.
How Capital One’s Peers Are Performing
Capital One’s peers like Ally Financial ALLY and OneMain Holdings, Inc. OMF have been trying to deal with the evolving interest rate landscape as well.
Ally Financial’s net financing revenues witnessed a CAGR of 5.4% over the last five years on the back of strong origination volumes and retail loan growth. The momentum continued during the first nine months of 2025. Further, Ally Financial has been restructuring its operations to create a simplified and streamlined organizational structure to achieve higher efficiency.
Similarly, OneMain’s NII has witnessed a CAGR of 3.8% over the last five years, with the uptrend continuing in the first nine months of 2025. Moreover, the company’s loan mix of Front Book and Back Book aims for revenue sustainability while maintaining upside potential in a rapidly changing macroeconomic environment. HCA Healthcare’s revenues remain on an uptick on the back of growth in admissions and inpatient surgeries. Revenues rose 7.2% year over year in the first nine months of 2025. HCA expects revenues to be in the range of $75-$76.5 billion in 2025, the midpoint of which indicates 7.3% growth from the 2024 figure.
Multiple buyouts drive network expansion, higher patient volumes and strong market presence. HCA resorts to prudent capital deployment via share buybacks and dividend payments. HCA repurchased shares worth $7.5 billion and paid a dividend of $517 million in the first nine months of 2025. HCA’s cash flow from operations rose 29.2% year over year in the same time period.
HCA Healthcare has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of 4.3% and 8.4%, respectively, for next year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for next year’s earnings has improved 5% over the last 30 days.
General Motors Co.
General Motors remains the top-selling U.S. automaker with a 17% market share, driven by strong demand for its Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac brands. GM’s U.S. manufacturing expansion and China restructuring—where sales rose 10% year over year in the last reported quarter — support long-term growth.
GM’s software and services arm is becoming a key profit engine, with $2 billion in revenue year to date and 11 million OnStar subscribers. Strong liquidity of $35.7 billion and robust buybacks boosts investor confidence. Additionally, the Auto Tariff Offset Process should increase GM’s domestic cost competitiveness. Backed by strong brands, operational recovery in China, and software-led diversification, GM appears well-positioned for sustained earnings growth and shareholder value creation.
General Motors has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of -0.7% and 7.9%, respectively, for next year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for next year’s earnings has improved 0.6% over the last seven days.
Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley’s focus on wealth and asset management operations along with its strategic alliances and acquisitions will aid the top line. The deal to buy EquityZen will help MS tap the rapidly growing private markets landscape. The performance of the investment banking (IB) business will continue to be driven by a strong pipeline. We project MS’ total revenues and IB fees to increase 11.7% and 12.8% in 2025, respectively.
On the other hand, while MS’ trading revenues have been increasing, growth in the same might become challenging in the future because of the volatile nature of the business. Yet, MS’ efficient capital distributions reflect a solid balance sheet.
Morgan Stanley has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of 4.1% and 5.8%, respectively, for next year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for next year’s earnings has improved 0.1% over the last seven days.
Capital One Financial Corp.
Capital One Financial third-quarter 2025 results were primarily aided by higher revenues, supported by the Discover Financial deal. The acquisition of Discover has reshaped the landscape of the credit card space, leading to the formation of a behemoth.
Decent consumer loan demand is expected to keep supporting COF’s net interest income. Solid credit card and online banking operations will aid COF’s top line. Supported by a robust balance sheet, COF is expected to keep enhancing shareholder value through efficient capital deployments.
Capital One Financial has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of 18% and 6.2%, respectively, for next year. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for next year’s earnings has improved 2.5% over the last 30 days.
