Margin performance adds an important layer. Net revenue margin was around 60% by the end of the first quarter of 2026, pointing to scaling progress while maintaining disciplined pricing.
The trade-off was costs. Operating expenses jumped 26.6% year over year to $321.8 million, and results included $2.7 million of acquisition-related expenses tied to the pending Grasshopper Bancorp transaction.
Credit trends were mixed. In the first quarter, the consolidated net charge-off ratio improved to 7.6% from 8.6% a year earlier, and the 30-plus-day delinquency ratio eased to 7.4% from 7.7%.
But broader pressure is still part of the setup. Net charge-offs rose 14.6% year over year in 2025, and delinquencies increased 11.5% over the same period. The near-term outlook still calls for continued pressure, even with improvement expected over time.
Enova’s Debt and Liquidity Put Flexibility in Focus
Balance sheet flexibility remains a key debate. As of March 31, 2026, liquidity was $1.1 billion, including cash and marketable securities plus available facility capacity, while long-term debt stood at $4.83 billion.
That combination heightens sensitivity if conditions weaken, because higher leverage can limit room to maneuver. It also raises the bar for consistent credit execution and expense control as the business scales.
Capital return is another area investors are watching closely. ENVA announced a $400 million share repurchase program in November 2025 that runs through June 30, 2027.

The logic is straightforward: pair Enova’s online consumer and small business lending engine with a digital-first banking platform and move toward a more unified banking framework. That “why now” matters because the company is leaning into momentum in small and medium business lending while looking to widen product reach and improve funding flexibility.
ENVA’s Grasshopper Deal Is a Strategic Inflection
The Grasshopper transaction brings together two complementary models. Enova’s core strength is digital lending across consumer and small business categories, while Grasshopper contributes digital banking infrastructure. Management’s goal is not just to bolt on another channel. It is to operate the combined business under a unified banking framework that can support lending and deposit products through one platform.
That framework is the strategic pivot. Enova has scaled its small business franchise quickly, with small business loans representing 70% of the portfolio as of March 31, 2026. Bringing a digital bank into the structure creates a path to broaden distribution and build a funding base that is less dependent on capital markets over time.

This can have a direct impact on which mutual funds and ETFs are willing to own the stock. Capital One Financial Now #95 Largest Company, Surpassing CVS Health

Capital One (NYSE: COF) is changing its business model in a significant way following its acquisition of Discover. The key shift is that it will now issue credit cards and process credit card transactions, which generates reliable fee income. Other than that, the company's core focus on lending to lower-credit-quality customers remains in place. But as this big business shift is underway, Capital One's auto lending trends are surprisingly positive news.
Capital One: High risk and high reward
Lower-credit-quality customers are willing to pay higher interest rates for access to debt. That is true with both credit cards, which are effectively revolving credit facilities, and with car loans, which are longer-term asset-backed loans. Auto loans have a history of being particularly risky during recessions, when customers' finances are stretched.

Since a large chunk of money is already out the door, the only option to recoup losses is to repossess the car. That is not an easy or pleasant experience for anyone involved, since the repossessed car will need to be resold to extract any value it may have. Credit card balances generally aren't as large as those for a car loan, so individually they don't pose the same risk.
Watching Capital One's car loans
Essentially, Capital One's car loans can serve as an important leading indicator of credit risk. This is why the business, while smaller than its credit card operation, is worth watching very closely. Right now, the risk doesn't seem all that high, even though consumers are tightening their budgets amid rising inflation. And the fact that high oil prices have some on Wall Street worried about a global recession.
In the first quarter of 2026, auto charge-offs fell 18 basis points from the fourth quarter of 2025. While they were up nine basis points year over year, they were still a fairly reasonable 1.64%. In April, the figure was even better at 1.2%. So even when there is a problem with an auto loan, the company is managing to recoup much of its loss. Non-performing auto loans, meanwhile, amounted to just 0.55% of its loan book, down from the fourth quarter and the year-ago period. That figure held steady in April.
All in, Capital One's auto loan portfolio isn't screaming that the bank's credit risks are rising. That's a positive sign for investors, but one that you should continue to monitor. When the economy turns south, which it will eventually do at some point, the bank's auto loans could be where the impact starts to hit first. A good indicator of that risk would likely show up first in the 30-day delinquency rates, but those were down sequentially and year over year for auto loans in the first quarter, as well, with an even further decline in the Month of April.

These financial stocks give investors two different ways to bet on premium consumer spending. Here's what you need to know.
These are two different business models
First, it's worth taking the time to understand how these business models work. They aren't the same.
American Express is a closed-loop payment system. Only American Express cards can use the network. But the business captures all of the economics of a typical transaction, collecting fees from merchants and cardholders while earning interest on revolving balances.
This company is known to target an affluent clientele. It primarily leans on a spend-centric model that thrives when its customers use their cards.
On the other hand, Visa is an open-loop system. It doesn't actually extend credit, leaving this activity to its partner financial institutions, which act as lenders. Consequently, Visa operates as a toll booth, collecting tiny fees anytime payments run through its network.
There are Visa-branded cards that serve people across income categories. However, the payment network has a strong position at the premium end. JPMorgan Chase's Sapphire Reserve and Capital One's Venture X credit cards, for example, target wealthier customers and run on the Visa network.
Financial metrics and valuation
American Express resembles a traditional bank, as it has to manage its loan portfolio. This can make its financial performance more cyclical and more exposed to macroeconomic factors such as interest rates.
Because Visa doesn't lend, it operates with a capital-light approach since funds don't need to be held in reserve to cover potential losses. And it avoids credit risk, making it more stable.
Therefore, its profits are impressive. During the past five years, Visa's quarterly operating margin averaged a superb 67.3%.
This allows the business to return a lot of capital to shareholders. During the fiscal second quarter ended March 31, Visa paid $1.3 billion in dividends and repurchased $7.9 billion worth of stock.
American Express' quarterly operating margin averaged 20.6% during the trailing-five-year period. This is not remotely close to Visa's operating margin.
But the company also pays a dividend yield of 1.2% right now compared with Visa's 0.8%. And its share buybacks totaled $1.9 billion in Q1.
Investors should look at growth trends as well. During the past five years, American Express' diluted earnings per share (EPS) increased at a respectable compound annual rate of 9.3%. This is driven by new card sign-ups and greater payment volume.
Visa's diluted EPS rose at a yearly clip of 17.9% during the last five years. Better growth and margins, unsurprisingly, support its higher valuation multiple. Visa shares trade at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 28.8. American Express' P/E multiple sits at 19.9.
Which financial stock is right for you?
It's important for interested investors to understand that both of these are high-quality businesses. Each possesses a powerful network effect that supports its wide economic moat. I don't believe they face a threat of disruption, underscoring how critical they are to the smooth functioning of commerce.
Investors who are turned off by Visa's more expensive valuation will gravitate to American Express as a possible portfolio addition. But the cheaper price tag comes with credit risk, as mentioned, adding exposure to the economic cycle.
Investors who want to own a wildly profitable and steady business, which might justify the higher P/E ratio, will pick Visa.
