Enova International, Inc. ENVA enters 2026 with credit performance in focus after a clear deterioration in 2025. For a lender serving non-prime consumers and small and medium businesses, small shifts in credit metrics can have outsized effects on earnings power and capital flexibility.
Early 2026 data points suggest the direction is improving. Still, investors should separate ratio trends from the income-statement dollars, and keep portfolio mix and pricing discipline front and center.
ENVA’s 2025 Credit Deterioration Sets the Backdrop
In 2025, net charge-offs rose 14.6% year over year and delinquencies increased 11.5%. Those are the two credit signals investors typically watch first because they capture both realized losses (charge-offs) and emerging stress (delinquencies).
That linkage matters even more for ENVA’s customer base. Non-prime and small business borrowers can be more sensitive to economic friction, so a rising delinquency pipeline can quickly translate into higher charge-offs if repayment conditions do not stabilize.
Enova’s Q1 Ratios Show Early Improvement
The first-quarter 2026 snapshot showed better year-over-year ratios. The consolidated net charge-off ratio was 7.6% versus 8.6% a year ago. The delinquency ratio was 7.4% versus 7.7%.
In practice, “improving” means ENVA is losing a smaller share of its average earning assets to charge-offs, while a slightly smaller portion of the book is moving into later-stage delinquency. That combination tends to reduce the forward drag from credit costs if it persists through the year.
The ratio improvement did not prevent net charge-off dollars from rising. Net charge-offs were $390.6 million in the first quarter of 2026 versus $350.3 million in the year-ago quarter.
That is not contradictory. Ratios measure losses relative to average combined loan and finance receivables. If ENVA’s average receivables base expands, total charge-offs can rise while the charge-off rate declines. The key takeaway is to track both lenses together, because dollars determine the direct hit to earnings while ratios signal underlying credit momentum.
Enova’s Portfolio Mix Raises the Stakes on Underwriting
Portfolio composition shapes how credit outcomes emerge and how quickly they can change. As of March 31, 2026, small business loans represented 70% of ENVA’s portfolio, while consumer loans were 30%.
A small business-heavy mix raises the importance of underwriting consistency, servicing, and monitoring, because small business cash flows can be uneven and more exposed to demand swings. It also means that even modest changes in small business performance can move consolidated credit metrics, simply because that segment dominates the portfolio.
ENVA’s Management View on Near-Term Credit Pressure
Even with better first-quarter ratios, ENVA is not positioned as “out of the woods” on credit. Credit quality is expected to remain under pressure in the near term, with geopolitical tensions and persistent inflation cited as key forces.
That framing matters for investors evaluating quarter-to-quarter volatility. It suggests the path of improvement may not be linear, and that the monitoring focus should stay on whether key portfolios continue to show better performance over time rather than expecting a quick normalization in any single quarter.
Enova’s Margin and Pricing Can Buffer Credit Volatility
Profitability provides another layer of protection when credit is choppy. ENVA’s net revenue margin was 60.1% in the first quarter of 2026, up from 56.8% a year ago. Management also noted net revenue margin was stable at around 60% by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
Pricing discipline helps in two ways. First, it can preserve revenue yield as the portfolio grows. Second, a stable margin gives ENVA more room to absorb higher charge-offs without fully compressing profitability. In a lender where credit costs can move quickly, that buffer can be the difference between a manageable swing and a meaningful earnings disruption.
ENVA’s Investor Checklist for the Next Few Quarters
The near-term checklist is straightforward. Track whether the net charge-off ratio stays closer to 7.6% than the prior-year 8.6%, and whether the delinquency ratio continues to trend below the 7.7% level from a year ago. Watch the income-statement charge-off dollars alongside those ratios, since growth in receivables can keep dollar losses elevated even as rates improve.
Keep portfolio mix in view as the small business book remains 70% of the portfolio, which makes small business performance the swing factor for consolidated credit. Finally, monitor whether net revenue margin holds near 60% as credit costs fluctuate, because stable pricing and margin are the most visible offsets when credit pressure persists.

Capital One’s provision for credit losses and net charge-offs has been increasing over the past several years. Though the company recorded a provision benefit in 2021, provision for credit losses witnessed a CAGR of 22.1% over the last six years (2019-2025). NCOs recorded a CAGR of 55.6% over the last four years (2021-2025). In the first quarter of 2026, both provision for credit losses and NCO rose year over year. Looking ahead, the company’s asset quality is likely to be under pressure given a tough macroeconomic backdrop.
Ally Financial’s provision for loan losses declined in 2021 and 2025, yet the metric witnessed a six-year (2019-2025) CAGR of 6.8%. Likewise, while net charge-offs declined in 2021 and 2025, the metric increased in the years between. In the first quarter of 2026, provision for credit losses rose while NCO declined. Looking ahead, volatility and cumulative inflationary pressure will lead to the deterioration of credit profile of the company’s borrowers. Hence, NCOs and provisions are expected to remain elevated.

Enova Credit Quality in 2026: Charge-Offs, Delinquencies Trends

One of Berkshire's top investment managers, Todd Combs, recently left the company for JPMorgan Chase.

If Warren Buffett's departure as chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB) and the large conglomerate's first new CEO in six decades wasn't enough, there could be more change coming to the company, particularly surrounding its closely watched stock portfolio worth roughly $322 billion.
A report from The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources, said that new CEO Greg Abel has dumped all the stocks managed by one of Buffett's investing lieutenants, Todd Combs, who recently left Berkshire for a role at JPMorgan Chase.

If true, the sold stocks could amount to a position of around $15 billion or more.
Combs likely managed about 5% of the portfolio
While Buffett managed the bulk of the equities portfolio until he stepped down as CEO, reports over the years indicated that Combs and Ted Weschler, who is still at Berkshire, oversaw about 10% of it at their own discretion.
Assuming they split it evenly means Combs had control of more than 5% of the portfolio, which today would amount to at least $16 billion. However, Berkshire's portfolio has hovered around $300 billion in recent years, so $15 billion is a fair assumption.
Although Abel has said he plans to leave many things at the company unchanged, the Berkshire veteran has also begun to make his mark. In his first annual letter to shareholders, he listed nine holdings in Berkshire's portfolio that he implied were "core holdings" and would see "limited activity" unless there are "fundamental changes in its long-term economic prospects."
Comments like these have led some to wonder whether Berkshire will be as active an investor. Abel does not have a background in portfolio management.
Abel also said in the letter that the responsibility of the equities portfolio ultimately resides with him, although Weschler would continue to manage 6% of it, including some of it previously managed by Combs.
While it's hard to know exactly which stocks Combs purchased and managed, many market watchers and analysts viewed him as the tech guru at the company and believe he was responsible for buying Amazon, Visa, Mastercard, Verisign, and Snowflake, which Berkshire sold in 2024.
It's also possible that Combs was responsible for some of Berkshire's smaller, more tech-focused financials companies, like Capital One and Ally Financial.
In the fourth quarter of 2025, Berkshire lowered its stake in nine of its holdings, including Atlanta Braves Holdings, Aon, Pool Corp., Liberty Latin America, Constellation Brands, and DaVita, although there's been speculation that DaVita is a Weschler position.
The market will get clues soon
The good news is that investors will only have to guess for a few more weeks. Berkshire must file its first-quarter 10-Q with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by May 2, which would reveal how much in stocks it bought and sold in the first quarter, and provide insight into which sectors. The actual positions that Berkshire changed in the first quarter will be made public in an SEC 13F filing, which must be released by May 15.
Even if Abel intends to sell all of the roughly $15 billion in equities that Combs managed, it may not all happen at once. Berkshire's size and equity positions have grown so large that it's not always easy to unload all at once. It may take several quarters.
Investors should not only look for potential changes to the portfolio, but also consider what it says about Abel's plans for the company and its portfolio. Based on his comments in the shareholder letter, he seems to be moving toward a more passive portfolio that would see fewer quarterly changes. But it's still early on in his tenure, so only time will tell.

Stocks with moats, the wider the better, are usually pretty good performers, no matter the market or economic environment, because that business is well insulated from outside threats. It takes a bit of research to find stocks with moats, but usually they are the stocks with the most consistent long-term returns. You can even find exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that focus on stocks with competitive moats.
In the financial industry, there are several companies with wide moats, but one of the absolute best moats belongs to credit and payment giant Visa (NYSE: V).
Visa's wide moat
Visa is one of just four major credit card companies, along with Mastercard (NYSE: MA), American Express (NYSE: AXP), and Discover, which is now owned by Capital One (NYSE: COF). That right there is somewhat of a moat, because it is very difficult, expensive, and complex to establish a new payment network, let alone build the trust of merchants and consumers.
But Visa's moat is even wider because it basically has a duopoly with Mastercard, controlling about 77% of the market. And of that 77%, Visa's market share is about 52%, far and away the leader.
The other key differentiator for Visa, as well as Mastercard, is that they are simply providers of the payment networks. They do not issue credit cards, like Capital One, Discover, or American Express, nor do they loan the money for the purchases made on their networks. They simply generate fees every time their network is used. And with some $17 trillion moving across Visa's network in 2025, that's a lot of fees.
Visa's model makes it free of credit risk -- and credit risk tends to negatively impact lenders, particularly during tough times. In fact, Visa tends to do relatively well in challenging markets, because, while purchase volume may go down in tough markets, consumers still use their credit and debit cards for purchases.
Visa at a discount
In addition, Visa has a relatively asset-light model, other than the need for updated technology systems. But as a long-established company, its technology systems are in place and only need updates. And because Visa generates such massive margins, due to its asset-light business, it has plenty of cash to invest in its systems and technology.
Visa stock is pretty much always a buy, as it is one of the steadiest, most consistent performers in the sector, thanks largely to its wide moat. Over the past 10 years, its has an average annualized return of about 14% per year.
Visa stock is down about 11% year to date, which makes it a particularly good buy right now as it relatively cheap with a forward P/E ratio of 24.

The Financial Stock With the Widest Competitive Moat in Its Industry

Investors in Capital One Financial Corp (Symbol: COF) saw new options begin trading today, for the June 5th expiration. At Stock Options Channel, our YieldBoost formula has looked up and down the COF options chain for the new June 5th contracts and identified one put and one call contract of particular interest.
The put contract at the $195.00 strike price has a current bid of $5.60. If an investor was to sell-to-open that put contract, they are committing to purchase the stock at $195.00, but will also collect the premium, putting the cost basis of the shares at $189.40 (before broker commissions). To an investor already interested in purchasing shares of COF, that could represent an attractive alternative to paying $198.74/share today.
Because the $195.00 strike represents an approximate 2% discount to the current trading price of the stock (in other words it is out-of-the-money by that percentage), there is also the possibility that the put contract would expire worthless. The current analytical data (including greeks and implied greeks) suggest the current odds of that happening are 59%. June 5th Options Now Available For Capital One Financial (COF)

The credit card company Capital One (NYSE: COF) delivered disappointing earnings results that fell short of Wall Street consensus estimates in multiple ways. The stock fell 1.5% today.
The company reported adjusted earnings per share of $4.42, missing estimates by $0.08. Revenue of 15.23 billion also came up short of estimates of $15.36 billion.

Capital One also set aside a $4.07 billion provision for credit losses, higher than analysts expected and up 72% year over year.
Whether you own the stock or not, Capital One, like several of the other major Wall Street banks, is a good company to watch because it can provide insights into the economy, particularly how the consumer is holding up.
Capital One is also important because it tends to serve more near-prime and subprime borrowers than some of its main competitors. Are the three earnings misses evidence that the consumer is finally showing fatigue?
The consumer remains resilient
Despite the credit miss, Capital One's management team says they continue to view the consumer as resilient. Investors should also keep in mind that credit is often one of the more difficult line items for analysts to model.
Of the nearly $4.1 billion provision, $3.8 billion covered net charge-offs, which are loan losses the company doesn't expect to recover, and about $230 million went to further build the total allowance for future credit losses.
While the provision is up 72% year over year, it actually fell from the previous quarter. Meanwhile, 30-day delinquencies, a good indicator of new, emerging credit concerns, also fell from the prior quarter and year over year.
"We continue to really feel very good about not only our portfolio performance, but good for the credit outlook of consumers and good for the opportunity to continue to lean in to origination and credit line growth in our business," Capital One's CEO Richard Fairbank, said on the company's earnings conference call. "Once again, it seems like every quarter we're having a conversation just like this. There's a lot of noise in the external environment, but the consumer is showing quite a bit of resilience."
Fairbank did say that if energy prices stay high for a longer period of time, "that would be a real headwind for consumers and probably a drag on the overall macro economy."
Capital One's business is inherently cyclical, given that the company lends to consumers and businesses, which have their ups and downs through the economic cycle. But despite the earnings and credit provision misses, Capital One's customer base still seems to be holding up well.
While I can understand investor concerns about owning a credit card lender if they are also concerned about a potential recession, I do think Capital One is a stock that can be held long-term and generate solid returns.
Fairbank and his C-suite are an incredibly strong management team with decades of experience and who know how to navigate the economic cycle.
Furthermore, I see strong promise once Capital One can fully integrate its $35 billion acquisition of Discover, which brings a payments network that will add a solid stream of annual recurring revenue.
