Capital One: A Strong Contender in the Banking Sector?

Capital One Financial's (NYSE: COF) stock has dramatically underperformed year to date in 2026 as of this writing. The stock has dropped more than 20% compared to a 1% or so decline in the S&P 500 index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), a 2% decline for the average bank, and roughly 10% drops for payment processors Visa (NYSE: V) and Mastercard (NYSE: MA). The weak relative performance actually makes some sense, but how does Capital One get back on track?
Recession fears are on the rise
Historically, Capital One has focused on extending credit to customers with lower credit scores. That can be a very profitable decision when the economy is strong, but during recessions, those customers tend to default more often than those with higher credit scores. With rising energy prices, intensifying geopolitical conflict, and consumers already feeling stretched, the risk of a recession seems elevated right now. It isn't shocking that Capital One Financial's stock has dramatically underperformed other financial stocks and the market.

However, Capital One Financial has changed dramatically, given its recent acquisition of Discover Financial. Like Visa and Mastercard, Discover is a payment processor that collects a small fee every time a Discover card is used. That creates a more stable foundation for Capital One's business, which could grow over time if it can shift current customers to Discover-branded cards.
The proof will come when Capital One faces adversity
The integration of Discover is still underway, so the cost of that effort continues to hit Capital One's income statement. However, once that process is complete, Capital One can then prove that the $35.3 billion acquisition was worth it. In fact, a big opportunity on that front would likely arise if a recession occurs.
If Capital One manages through a recession in relative stride, investors will likely become far more comfortable with the business. That could lead the stock to outperform the market as it recovers from the recent drawdown.
Notably, Capital One ended 2025 with a tier one capital ratio of 14.3%. That's above Bank of America's (NYSE: BAC) tier one ratio of 12.8%. The tier one ratio is a measure of a bank's preparedness for adversity. In other words, Capital One is, perhaps, better prepared to deal with a recession than some of the largest banks in the United States.
Capital One is best suited to more aggressive investors
Even if Capital One's acquisition of Discover makes the business more resilient, risk-averse investors should probably still avoid it. The company's business model is still aggressive, noting that the company has already agreed to buy another company, Brex, for $5.1 billion before it has fully completed the integration of Discover. And the focus on lower-credit-score customers hasn't changed.
However, if you are a more aggressive, growth-minded investor, strong financial performance during a recession could help to turn Capital One's relative stock performance around.

Capital One Financial's Preferred Stock Series L Crosses Above 6.5% Yield Territory

Shares of Jefferies Financial Group JEF lost more than 13% on Friday, following the lawsuit filed in New York state court by Western Alliance Bancorporation WAL, alleging JEF’s breach of contract and fraud related to a $126.4-million loan tied to the collapse of First Brands Group.
Reason Behind the Lawsuit Against JEF
Western Alliance claims that Jefferies failed to complete payments on a loan extended to the Point Bonita fund, an affiliate investment vehicle linked to Jefferies. The loan was backed by receivables purchased from First Brands.
First Brands is an auto-parts distributor that filed for bankruptcy in September 2025 amid allegations of fraud. After the company’s collapse, the receivables backing the loan reportedly became worthless, worsening the dispute between the lender and Jefferies.
Jefferies informed that it would not make the remaining payments due in early 2026, leaving $126.4 million unpaid. The lawsuit alleges that Jefferies and its affiliates breached the loan agreement and misrepresented their intention to repay the debt. Western Alliance claims the defendants “knew they did not intend to repay the loan in full,” which has led the bank to charge off the entire remaining balance.
JEF’s Response to Western Alliance’s Claims
Jefferies maintains that the loan arrangement was structured on standard market terms and was non-recourse. Western Alliance conducted its due diligence before extending the financing and retained the right to audit the receivables backing the loan.
The Point Bonita fund, which operates under the umbrella of Jefferies’ asset management platform, acted in good faith and maintained goodwill toward the bank throughout the relationship. Thus, Jefferies strongly disagrees with the allegations.
Jefferies remains confident in its position and intends to defend the lawsuit vigorously. The firm believes the legal process will ultimately demonstrate that the claims lack merit and clarify the circumstances surrounding the First Brands collapse.

Legal Troubles for Other Finance Firms
In November 2025, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (“FDIC”) filed a lawsuit against Capital One COF, alleging that the bank paid about $100 million less than it should have to help bail out depositors of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, when both collapsed in 2023.
The FDIC took control of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in March 2023, and estimated in June 2024 that it would recover $18.6 billion from 111 banks through special assessments. Banks with less than $5 billion in assets were exempted from these charges.
In sync with this, Capital One estimated in July 2025 that it might have to reserve an additional $200 million. The main concern of the dispute was whether Capital One understated its level of uninsured deposits by excluding a $56-billion position between two subsidiaries from regulatory filings that describe its financial condition.

What this transaction means for investors
140 Summer Partners runs a concentrated portfolio. It held 22 positions in the fourth quarter. It bought more shares of several of its top holdings last quarter, including raising its stake in Acuity.
Acuity stock has been volatile over the past few years, but the company had a strong year. In fiscal 2025, which ended in August, revenue grew 13% year over year to $4.3 billion. It seems to be building momentum, with revenue up 20% year over year in the most recent quarter.
Despite the stock’s underperformance, the company’s growth could make the stock undervalued. The shares trade at 14 times expected earnings, and analysts expect earnings to grow at an annualized rate of 20% over the next two years.

140 Summer Partners Buys Acuity Stock

Key Points
Remitly Global, an international money transfer company, has seen its stock price surge more than 35% in the past two weeks.
With a robust outlook, Remitly stock has some strong potential upside.
But Capital One, which is dirt cheap, has even more growth potential.
Remitly Global (NASDAQ: RELY) saw its stock price rise more than 35% in the past two weeks after it reported excellent fourth-quarter results.
The company, a leader in processing international money transfers, also provided an upbeat outlook, which put investors into buy mode for the cheap stock.

Revenue in the quarter increased by 26% from a year earlier, send volume surged by 35%, and active customers rose by 19%. It also swung to a profit, with net income of $41 million compared with a $6 million net loss in the same quarter a year ago.
Its outlook for 2026 calls for 19% to 20% revenue growth, positive net income, and a 25% to 32% rise in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA).
All in all, it is a stock that should be on your radar. Wall Street analysts have an average price target of $21 per share, which would be about a 20% gain.
But here's another financial stock that has even more upside to also put on your radar -- Capital One Financial (NYSE: COF).
Merger fuels optimism
Capital One stock is down about 19% year to date, mainly due to concerns about potential regulation and legislation affecting credit cards. But I take a more bullish view of Capital One, stemming largely from its acquisition of Discover.
The acquisition, which closed last year, combined one of the largest credit card issuers with the Discover card payment network. The marriage of the two is expected to result in $2.5 billion to $2.7 billion in annual synergies, starting in 2027. That essentially means that the bank will see that much benefit each year between cost reductions and new revenue opportunities.
Part of the revenue opportunities come from Capital One moving some of its popular credit cards, including Venture, Savor, and Quicksilver, to the Discover network to capture the entire interchange fee instead of sharing it with other networks. At the same time, it would save on fees paid to either Visa (NYSE: V) or Mastercard (NYSE: MA) for using their networks.
Once these synergies start kicking in, analysts expect revenue to increase 25% and earnings to surge 26% between now and the end of 2027.
If interest rates come down as many expect, it should help Capital One in the longer term, spurring more loan activity and improving credit quality.
Capital One stock is cheap
The other positive factor for Capital One is its low valuation. Although its current price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is out of whack due to the high costs of combining and integrating the two companies, its forward P/E ratio is just 9, and its five-year price/earnings-to-growth (PEG) ratio is a minuscule 0.20. Anything less than 1 is considered value territory.
Wall Street analysts rate Capital One stock as a buy, with an average price target of $280 per share, which suggests about 42% upside during the next 12 months.
So although Remitly looks like a solid option for investors, Capital One appears to have more upside. It is transforming into a more diversified, all-weather stock compared to many of its peers -- and it is extremely cheap.
