Chipotle Mexican Grill Q1 26 Earnings Conference Call At 4:30 PM ET

President Trump continues his tough talk on his social media platform Truth Social this morning, which can be understood at this stage in the two-month war that negotiations are currently static. But for once, there may be something even bigger than the Strait of Hormuz affecting investors’ attitudes (even with Brent crude back up to $115 per barrel): in aggregate, this may be the biggest day ofstock market newsso far in 2026.
Not only is today the final Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decision under Fed Chair Jerome Powell — Kevin Warsh will replace him for the FOMC’s June meeting — but four of the “Magnificent 7” stocks will report quarterly earnings after the closing bell. The FOMC is 100% likely to keep the 3.50-3.75% Fed funds rate steady, as it has been since December of last year. For the “Mag 7” stocks, capital outlays toward AI investment will be closely watched.
Not only that, but we also see dozens of important companies reporting Q1 earnings before and after the bell that are unrelated to the AI trade, such as Phillips 66 in the early AM and Ford F, Qualcomm QCOM and Chipotle CMG this afternoon. Also, a plethora of economic reports greet us an hour before the opening bell.
Fresh Data for March: Durable Goods, Housing Starts & More
We see some unexpectedly strong economic growth numbers from March this morning, and we’ll start by discussing Durable Goods Orders: +0.8% is 4x what analysts had been expecting, the first positive print in the past four months, and the highest since +5.4% in November of last year. This follows an unrevised -1.4% from February.
Ex-Transportation, we see this bump up to +0.9%, and non-Defense, ex-aircraft — a proxy for “regular” enterprise spending — we see the biggest jump in almost six years: +3.3%. We can trace this boom to AI infrastructure spending, with the AI equipment segment up big: +3.7%. At least we’re beginning to see the results of AI investment make its way into metrics not directly associated with Big Tech “hyperscalers.”
Housing Starts for March jumped to their highest levels since December 2024 this morning: +1.502 million seasonally adjusted, annualized units was way up from the downwardly revised +1.36 million reported for February. For the first time since September of 2022, we saw a “5-handle” on 30-year fixed mortgage rates (+5.98%), and homebuilders responded in a big way.
Conversely, Building Permits — a proxy for March came down to +1.372 million seasonally adjusted, annualized units from February’s big jump to +1.54 million, and the lowest figure since August of last year. March is a key month here: that’s when the bombings of Iran started. Even though homebuilders were gaining momentum on lowered mortgage rates, uncertainty due to the war saw Permits — which usually go up in the spring months — take a tumble.
The Advanced U.S. Trade Deficit came in slightly lower than expectations: -$87.9 billion. This is the deepest level of 2026 so far, but still thankfully well off the all-time low -$135 billion we saw in March of 2025, directly before President Trump’s “Liberation Day” of massive global tariffs (which lasted one week).
Preliminary numbers on Advanced Retail Inventories blossomed to +0.7% in March from +0.1% expected, while Wholesale Inventories jumped +100 basis points (bps) from expectations to +1.4%, and 50 bps above the previous month’s +0.9%. These are both metrics that will add to quarterly GDP, albeit the “worst” sort of economic growth, as it anticipates sales that may or may not materialize.
Q1 Earnings at a Glance: PSX, ABBV, BIIB & Mag 7 Later
This may be the longest word-count for “Ahead of Wall Street” on record, as we’re just now getting to Q1 earnings ahead of the open. With this in mind, we’ll merely spot-check some key earnings data this morning:
Big Pharma mainstay AbbVie ABBV beat estimates by 3 cents per share to $2.65 on its bottom line and bumped up its guidance, but shares are flat on the news, even after falling -13% year to date.
Oil refiner Phillips 66 PSX posted a huge +189% earnings beat — +$0.49 per share versus -$0.55 in the Zacks consensus — on higher refining margins, largely based on oil price hikes from the Iran war. These shares are flat, as well, but +28% year to date.
Biotech giant Biogen BIIB posted a +21% earnings beat this morning — $3.57 per share versus $2.95 anticipated — while also outperforming on its top line. Shares are up +2% on the news, adding to the stock’s +4% growth from the start of the year.
After the closing bell today, Microsoft MSFT is expected to have growth +17.6% on its bottom line and +16.2% on its top. Meta Platforms META looks to have grown +4.35% on year-over-year earnings and +31.15% on revenues. Amazon AMZN anticipates a more modest +0.63% earnings growth and +14.24% on the top line. Alphabet GOOGL, with its massive capex spending on AI infrastructure, is projected to come in -6% on earnings and +20.6% on revenues.

Big Boosts to Econ Growth from AI Investment, Inventories & More

It's been a tough few years to be a Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) shareholder. After years of dependable growth, the coffee chain stumbled, with growth as tepid as day-old java. The company took a big swing, bringing in former Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol to right the ship, and there were already positive signs that his turnaround efforts were taking hold. Starbucks faced a critical test when the company reported after the market close on Tuesday, and the results came in piping hot.
For the company's fiscal 2026 second quarter (ended March 29), Starbucks delivered net revenue that jumped 9% year over year to $9.5 billion. The results were fueled by comparable-store sales (comps) that climbed 6.2%, driven by a 3.8% increase in transactions and a 2.3% increase in the average ticket. This fueled earnings per share (EPS) of $0.45, up 32%, while adjusted EPS of $0.50 climbed 22%.

To give these results context, analysts' consensus estimates were calling for revenue of $9.23 billion and adjusted EPS of $0.44, so Starbucks cleared both hurdles with room to spare.
Digging into the results revealed even better news. Comps in North America -- the company's biggest market -- increased 7.1%, driven by a 4.4% increase in transactions and 2.6% increase in the average ticket. At the same time, international comps improved 2.6%, as transactions increased 2.1% and ticket total increased 0.5%. Management noted that "all 10 of Starbucks largest international markets delivered positive comps for the first time in nine quarters."
Niccol heralded the results, saying, "Our second quarter marked the turn in our turnaround as our 'Back to Starbucks' plan drove both top and bottom line growth." He went on to say, "This is the Starbucks our customers deserve and the Starbucks we believe will deliver long-term growth and value for our partners and shareholders as we execute consistently, at scale."
The company also opened 11 net new stores during the quarter, bringing its total to more than 41,000 locations worldwide.
Starbucks continues to make progress with its previously announced joint venture (JV) with Boyu Capital, which will operate the company's retail locations in China. As part of the JV, Boyu Capital holds a 60% stake in Starbucks China, with Starbucks controlling the remaining 40%, while retaining ownership and licensing of the brand and intellectual property. Management noted that the impact of the transactions would begin to be reported in its Q3 results.
Perhaps the most important news concerned Starbucks' view of the future. The company increased its full-year 2026 outlook and is now guiding for U.S. and global comps of 5% or greater, up from its forecast of 3% growth delivered just last quarter.
Earlier this month, Starbucks announced a quarterly dividend of $0.62, payable on May 29, to shareholders of record as of May 15. With 1.14 billion shares outstanding, that works out to nearly $709 million in cash paid out, compared to net income of $511 million.
CFO Cathy Smith explained, "We've been clear that top-line improvement would come first, with earnings growth to follow." She went on to note, "We have more work to do." Investors should keep an eye on the trajectory of profits to ensure Starbucks has the resources to maintain the dividend at its current level.
In the 18 months since Niccol took the helm, Starbucks has made notable improvements in its operations. Those are beginning to show through in the financial results. This turnaround is gaining steam, and Starbucks stock is as hot as its coffee. At 33 times next year's expected earnings, much of the turnaround is already baked into the stock price. That said, as Starbucks continues to boost its profits, it could end up being a bargain.

What investors need to know about Jersey Mike's IPO
There are more questions than answers about Jersey Mike's IPO, at least for now. The company's regulatory filing didn't disclose any financial details. We don't even have a specific date for when the IPO might be conducted yet. Jersey Mike could even delay or withdraw the IPO if market conditions aren't favorable.
What information is known at this point? Bloomberg reported that sources familiar with Jersey Mike's planned IPO said the company could go public as early as the third quarter of this year.
Bloomberg's sources also revealed that Jersey Mike's is targeting an initial valuation of about $12 billion. If this figure is correct, it reflects a steep price-to-sales multiple of 38.7, based on the restaurant operator's 2025 revenue of $309.8 million. To put that number into perspective, the average price-to-sales ratio for the restaurant industry is only 2.5. Fast-food stocks such as Domino's Pizza (NASDAQ: DPZ) and Restaurant Brands International (NYSE: QSR) trade at price-to-sales multiples of below 4x.
While investors wait for more information, there is one indirect way to invest in Jersey Mike's. Alternative investment management company Blackstone (NYSE: BX) acquired a majority stake in Jersey Mike's in 2024 for around $8 billion. Buying shares of Blackstone, therefore, will give you ownership in Jersey Mike's.
You can even buy Blackstone at a discount right now. The stock plunged in recent months in part due to concerns about the private credit industry and the Trump administration's move to ban institutions from buying single-family homes.
Why Wall Street is hungry
It's understandable why Wall Street could be salivating over Jersey Mike's IPO. The company's CEO, Charlie Morrison, guided Wingstop (NASDAQ: WING) through its 2015 IPO. Wingstop's stock has delivered a nearly 6x return since then, handily beating the S&P 500's (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) performance.
Other fast-casual restaurant stocks have also been winners for investors. For example, an initial investment of $10,000 in Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) when it went public in 2006 would be worth more than $380,000 today. If you invested in Cava Group (NYSE: CAVA) at its IPO in 2023, you would have more than doubled your money.
Wall Street also knows that Jersey Mike's has significant growth opportunities. The company currently has 3,326 locations in the U.S. It intends to open nearly 300 new restaurants soon. Jersey Mike's website states that it has more than 4,000 locations "open and under development." In addition, the restaurant chain is targeting international growth, with plans to open 300 locations in Canada through a partnership with Redberry Restaurants.
What investors should watch
The next key step in Jersey Mike's IPO process will be submitting its S-1 filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The S-1 will address many of the currently open questions, including the anticipated price range for IPO shares. Investors will also be able to see Jersey Mike's financial details that have been unavailable thus far.
It remains to be seen if Jersey Mike's will rank among the hottest IPO stocks of 2026. That could be especially difficult with the IPOs for Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX on the horizon. However, considering the successful IPOs for Cava, Chipotle, and Wingstop, many investors will closely watch Jersey Mike's IPO progress.
