What’s Pressuring CMG Stock?
Chipotle’s stock is facing pressure from softer profitability trends despite management’s focus on improving restaurant execution, menu innovation and guest engagement. The company noted that margins remain under pressure as pricing is running below inflation, limiting its ability to fully offset higher costs.
Cost inflation remains a key headwind, particularly in beef, freight, avocados, dairy and other food items. While some commodities have been favorable at times, management expects the cost of sales to remain pressured as higher input costs offset modest pricing benefits.

Chipotle Stock Falls 38% in a Year: Should You Buy Now or Hold Steady?

CAVA Group, Inc. CAVA is raising its restaurant opening target as new units continue to deliver strong early productivity. The company now expects to open 75-77 net new CAVA restaurants in fiscal 2026, up from its prior outlook of 74-76, signaling confidence in its development pipeline and long-term expansion opportunity.
In the first quarter of fiscal 2026, CAVA opened 20 net new restaurants, ending the period with 459 restaurants across 29 states and Washington, D.C. The restaurant base increased 20.2% year over year, reflecting continued progress in national expansion. During the quarter, the company reported new market openings in Cincinnati, St. Louis and Columbus and stated plans to open in Minneapolis later this year.
CAVA’s growth momentum is being supported by strong new-unit economics. The company said its 2026 restaurant cohort is tracking in line with or ahead of the strength of its 2025 class, with first-quarter new restaurant productivity trending above 100%. Management also noted that new openings continue to exceed expectations in both top-line and margin performance, while systemwide AUVs reached approximately $3 million.
Management indicated that results remain strong across geographies, formats and market types, suggesting that the concept continues to resonate beyond its more established markets. The 2025 vintage is also performing similarly to the 2024 class, indicating that recent cohorts are holding up well as they mature into the comp base.
For CAVA, the raised opening outlook strengthens the case that growth momentum can continue, supported by strong new-unit productivity, broad market acceptance and healthy cohort performance. The consistency of recent restaurant classes suggests that the company’s development model remains fundamentally sound as it expands into new markets. If execution holds as the restaurant base scales, CAVA’s unit-growth runway could remain a key driver of growth.
How CAVA Stacks Up Against CMG and SHAK
Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. CMG remains a larger-scale development benchmark. In the first quarter of 2026, Chipotle opened 49 restaurants, including 42 Chipotlanes and remains on track to open around 350 restaurants for the full year, with roughly 80% including a Chipotlane. Compared with CMG’s mature large-scale expansion model and SHAK’s accelerating company-operated development, CAVA’s growth story stands out for the combination of a smaller restaurant base, raised opening guidance and strong new-unit productivity. With recent cohorts performing well, CAVA’s ability to scale while preserving unit economics remains central to its long-term growth narrative.

CAVA's Expansion Outlook Improves: Can New Units Keep Driving Growth?

SoundHound AI doesn't have a large competitive moat and has largely been a niche player in agentic voice artificial intelligence (AI).

I've been pretty skeptical of SoundHound AI (NASDAQ: SOUN). Compared with heavy hitters in artificial intelligence (AI) such as Anthropic and OpenAI, the AI-powered voice chatbot company has a small niche and a tiny cash balance. And yet it somehow still has a $3 billion market cap, although that's fallen more than 60% from its 2025 high.
Over the last few quarters, though, I've started to rethink my bearish position on SoundHound. The company has been executing well, and against all odds, it seems to be making headway. Here's why I think SoundHound might be worth a second look for AI investors.

The bear case
SoundHound is essentially combining an old technology (voice recognition) with a very new one (AI).
Phone voice recognition systems predate Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa, which debuted in 2010 and 2014, respectively. SoundHound's major innovation was developing voice recognition technology that performs better in environments with heavy background noise, making it a favorite of drive-thrus and in-car audio systems.
The company opened a new market by expanding its agentic AI restaurant ordering systems from drive-thru windows to phone systems, which are used today by major chains like White Castle, Chipotle, Five Guys, Panda Express, and Applebee's. It also provides in-car voice systems for Kia, Hyundai, Lucid, and all of Stellantis' brands, including Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep. And in Q1, it signed a global agreement with "a prominent Japanese manufacturer" for its vehicle voice assistant.
But although SoundHound has a solid, growing presence in these niches, they're comparatively easy niches for an AI chatbot to fill. To really unlock major growth, SoundHound needs to expand into general customer service applications, where there are many more potential customers, but also more potential for error. Plus, on a customer service phone line, SoundHound's background noise-reducing technology isn't as important, putting it at greater risk from competitors.
The bull case
SoundHound's apparent lack of a proprietary moat worried me at first. But just because a technology is widely used doesn't mean a deep-pocketed competitor will necessarily deploy it in this industry to clear the field.
It's no surprise that SoundHound has plenty of competition in this space. An effective agentic AI customer service voice agent platform would have several advantages over human agents beyond cost-effectiveness, including the ability to answer all calls quickly regardless of call volume, 24/7 global availability, multilingual support, and near-instant data retrieval. But it's a very fragmented market with lots of small start-ups operating alongside major players, including Amazon Quick for AWS and Salesforce's Agentforce.

In the latest close session, Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) was up +1.81% at $30.42. The stock's change was more than the S&P 500's daily loss of 1.62%. Meanwhile, the Dow lost 1.87%, and the Nasdaq, a tech-heavy index, lost 1.98%.
The stock of Mexican food chain has fallen by 8.54% in the past month, lagging the Retail-Wholesale sector's loss of 6.71% and the S&P 500's loss of 0.03%.
Investors will be eagerly watching for the performance of Chipotle Mexican Grill in its upcoming earnings disclosure. The company's earnings report is set to be unveiled on July 29, 2026. On that day, Chipotle Mexican Grill is projected to report earnings of $0.32 per share, which would represent a year-over-year decline of 3.03%. Throw in the war in Iran, and it's not surprising that some investors are leery regarding consumer discretionary stocks. The conflict in the Middle East is a major driver of resurgent inflation, and as consumers tighten their belts, some fast-food stocks are being pinched, including Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG).

Actually, Chipotle's tale of woe about inflation predates the war in Iran. Last year, the stock was drubbed with the company acknowledging it was being hit on multiple fronts, including tariffs, higher beef prices (inflation), and diners in the critical sub-$100,000 income and 25 to 35-year-old age demographics reining in their burrito indulgence. Those are among the reasons the stock is down 44.2% over the past year.
Chipotle feels like a "hold"
Following that 44.2% tumble, Chipotle may feel like a falling knife to some investors and a value play to others. Using Wall Street analyst lingo, it's probably a "hold" at the moment. Speaking of Wall Street, some are divided on the fast-casual restaurant stock.
Morgan Stanley recently downgraded Chipotle, noting that when it comes to garnering sales from the most price-focused customers seeking fast Mexican fare, Yum! Brands' Taco Bell is better positioned for that business. Conversely, J.P. Morgan upgraded Chipotle, saying "a rare valuation opportunity" is afoot and that the company still has an above-average growth profile.
Analyst commentary isn't the end-all and be-all of investment decision making. Still, it can be instructive, and the differing views mentioned above arguably reinforce the notion that, for investors wanting to nibble on a restaurant stock rebound candidate, Chipotle is sending "hold" vibes.
What is clear is that Chipotle wants to lean into its 60% of customers who make $100,000 or more annually, but it's also telling consumers and investors that prices aren't rising because of a purported "wealth grab." In fact, the chain sees prices climbing 1% to 2% in 2026, well below the current rate of inflation.
Chipotle can rebound, but patience is required
Yes, it's hard to be a devoted fan of any stock that's off 44% in a year, let alone beholden to increasingly frugal consumer habits. Still, for investors who extend Chipotle some latitude, there may be an opportunity here.
It's still one of the best operators in the fast-casual space with industry-leading cash returns and productivity rates at its new stores. Speaking of Chipotle locations, international revenue growth is nearing 22%, confirming the brand is appealing to consumers outside the U.S. and that Chipotle is embracing geographic diversification.
The company is also leveraging enhanced equipment and technology to improve in-store efficiencies, but it's not just about cost savings. Even something as rudimentary as an advanced produce slicer can serve the objectives of freeing up employees to better cater to guests during busy periods while fostering better product consistency. Overall, Chipotle needs to show investors it's a "buy" but the company is taking some steps in the right direction.

Chipotle's discounted stock price could be a profit opportunity for investors
Analysts at JPMorgan Chase upgraded Chipotle's stock from neutral to overweight (read: buy). After meeting with CEO Scott Boatwright and chief financial officer Adam Rymer, JPMorgan's team sees the restaurant chain's stock price rising nearly 20% to $35.
Even after today's gains, Chipotle's shares are down 44% over the past year. With its price-to-earnings (P/E) multiple roughly cut in half during that time, JPMorgan's analysts believe the stock now offers investors a much more attractive risk-to-reward profile and better reflects more subdued growth expectations.
More moderate, but sustained, growth could drive solid long-term returns
Chipotle's days as a rapidly expanding business are likely over. JPMorgan projects a relatively modest 8% to 9% annual increase in revenue for the fast-casual chain.
Margin expansion will also be harder to come by. The analysts noted that Chipotle is investing more in its employees and technology to improve the customer experience at its restaurants.
Yet JPMorgan's team did highlight a potentially lucrative opportunity for Chipotle to expand internationally, which it argues is not fully reflected in its depressed share price.

Why Chipotle Stock Rallied Today

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Friday closed down -2.64%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -1.35%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -4.77%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) fell -2.97%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) fell -5.09%.
Stock indexes sold off sharply on Friday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posting 2-week lows. Investors rotated out of AI-infrastructure and semiconductor companies and sold megacap technology stocks that earlier this week pushed US stock indexes to all-time highs. Technology stocks retreated amid long liquidation and profit-taking after Broadcom’s outlook for chip sales fell short of high expectations, raising concerns that the AI trade rally has been excessive.

Stock indexes added to their losses on Friday as bond yields soared on the stronger-than-expected US May payrolls report, bolstering speculation that the Fed’s next interest rate move will be a rate hike. The 10-year T-note yield rose to a 2-week high of 4.55%.
US May nonfarm payrolls rose +172,000, stronger than expectations of +88,000. Also, Apr nonfarm payrolls were revised upward to +179,000 from the previously reported +115,000. The May unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3%, right on expectations.
US May average hourly earnings rose +0.3% m/m and +3.4% y/y, right on expectations.
US Apr consumer credit increased by $20.733 billion, stronger than expectations of $17.670 billion.
Crude oil prices fell more than -2% on Friday, even as the US and Iran have made little progress in talks over an interim peace deal, with clashes between Israel and Hezbollah militants continuing in Lebanon. Iran insists on a ceasefire in Lebanon before accepting a US deal to extend the truce and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump said Thursday that negotiations with Iran are in the “final” stages without elaborating, while Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi earlier said there had been “no tangible progress” even though both sides continue to exchange messages via mediators.
The markets are discounting a 1% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
The generally favorable Q1 earnings season is winding down. As of Friday, 84% of the 496 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets settled lower on Friday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.68%. China's Shanghai Composite fell to a 7-week low and closed down -0.74%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average closed down -1.31%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Friday closed down -16.5 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield rose +6.9 bp to 4.542%. T-notes retreated on Friday amid a stronger-than-expected increase in US May nonfarm payrolls and a sharp upside revision to April nonfarm payrolls, bolstering speculation that the next Fed move will be an interest rate increase.
European government bond yields moved higher on Friday. The 10-year German Bund yield climbed to a 2-week high of 3.051% and finished up +1.6 bp to 3.038%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +0.5 bp to 4.903%.
Eurozone Q1 GDP was revised downward to -0.2% q/q and +0.3% y/y from the previously reported +0.1% q/q and +0.8% y/y.
Swaps are discounting a 100% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on June 11.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks are retreating for a second day today after Broadcom’s outlook for chip sales fell short of high expectations, raising concerns over whether the rally in the AI trade has been excessive. Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed down more than -16% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Micron Technology (MU) closed down more than -13%. Also, ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed down more than -12%, and Intel (INTC), Sandisk (SNDK), ON Semiconductor (ON), and Western Digital (WDC) closed down more than -10%. In addition, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed down more than -9%, and Applied Materials (AMAT), KLA Corp (KLAC), Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -8%. Finally, Broadcom (AVGO), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), and Microchip Technology (MCHP) closed down more than -7%, and ASML Holding NV (ASML) and Texas Instruments (TXN) closed down more than -6%.
The Magnificent Seven technology stocks fell sharply on Friday. Tesla (TSLA) and Nvidia (NVDA) closed down more than -6%, and Meta Platforms (META) closed down more than -5%. Also, Amazon.com (AMZN) closed down more than -3%, and Microsoft (MSFT) closed down more than -2%. In addition, Alphabet (GOOGL) and Apple (AAPL) closed down more than -1%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks sank on Friday, as Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) fell more than -5% to a 20-month low. Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed down more than -11%, and MARA Holdings (MARA) and Riot Platforms (RIOT) closed down more than -10%. Also, Coinbase Global (COIN) closed down more than -7%, and Strategy (MSTR) closed down more than -6%.
Mining stocks sold off on Friday as gold, silver, and copper prices plunged. Hecla Mining (HL) closed down more than -12%, and Coeur Mining (CDE) closed down more than -11%. Also, Southern Copper (SCCO) closed down more than -10%, and Freeport McMoRan (FCX) closed down more than 9%. In addition, Anglogold Ashanti (AU) closed down more than -8%, and Newmont Corp (NEM) and Barrick Mining (B) closed down more than -7%.
Defensive consumer staple companies rallied on Friday amid the broader market's plunge. Clorox (CLX) closed up more than +5%, and Procter & Gamble (PG) closed up more than +4% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials. Also, Kimberly-Clark (KMB) and Colgate-Palmolive (CL) closed up more than +4%, and Coca-Cola (KO) and Tyson Foods (TSN) closed up more than +3%.
Guidewire Software (GWRE) closed down more than -9% after forecasting Q4 subscription and support revenue of $259 million to $265 million, the midpoint below the consensus of $263.6 million.
Lululemon Athletica (LULU) closed down more than -8% after cutting its 2027 net revenue forecast to $11 billion to $11.15 billion from a previous forecast of $11.35 billion to $11.50 billion, below the consensus of $11.49 billion.
DocuSign (DOCU) closed down more than -6% after forecasting a full-year adjusted gross margin of 81.5% to 82%, the midpoint below the consensus of 81.8%.
Fiserv (FISV) closed down more than -3% after BNP Paribas downgraded the stock to underperform from neutral with a price target of $46.
Cooper Cos (COO) closed up more than +8% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q2 net sales of $1.08 billion, better than the consensus of $1.05 billion.
G-III Apparel Group Ltd (GIII) closed up more than +5% after boosting its 2027 adjusted EPS forecast to $2.15 to $2.25 from a previous estimate of $2.00 to $2.10, above the consensus of $2.09.

Stocks Settle Sharply Lower as Tech Companies Routed

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -1.00%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.26%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is down -2.08%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) are down -1.11%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) are down -2.28%.
Stock indexes are plummeting today, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 falling to 2-week lows as investors rotate out of AI-infrastructure and semiconductor stocks that earlier this week pushed the US stock index to all-time highs. Technology stocks continue to pull back amid long liquidation and profit-taking after Broadcom’s outlook for chip sales fell short of high expectations, raising concerns that the AI trade rally has been excessive.

Stock indexes added to their losses today as bond yields jumped on the stronger-than-expected US May payrolls report, bolstering speculation that the Fed’s next interest rate move will be a rate hike. The 10-year T-note yield rose to a 2-week high of 4.54%.
US May nonfarm payrolls rose +172,000, stronger than expectations of +88,000. Also, Apr nonfarm payrolls were revised upward to +179,000 from the previously reported +115,000. The May unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3%, right on expectations.
US May average hourly earnings rose +0.3% m/m and +3.4% y/y, right on expectations.
Crude oil prices are down more than -2% today, even as the US and Iran have made little progress in talks over an interim peace deal, with clashes between Israel and Hezbollah militants continuing in Lebanon. Iran insists on a ceasefire in Lebanon before accepting a US deal to extend the truce and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump said Thursday that negotiations with Iran are in the “final” stages without elaborating, while Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi earlier said there had been “no tangible progress” even though both sides continue to exchange messages via mediators.
The markets are discounting a 3% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
The generally favorable Q1 earnings season is winding down. As of today, 83% of the 494 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets are lower today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.56%. China's Shanghai Composite fell to a 7-week low and closed down -0.74%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average closed down -1.31%.

September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) today are down -16 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield is up +7.1 bp to 4.553%.
