The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Wednesday closed down -0.04%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.57%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +0.58%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) fell -0.07%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) rose +0.50%.
Stock indexes settled mixed on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrials falling to a 1.5-week low. Soaring crude oil prices boosted inflation expectations and bond yields, and were negative for stocks. WTI crude oil surged to a 3-week high on Wednesday after the US signaled it will maintain its naval blockade of Iran for the foreseeable future. The Wall Street Journal reported that President Trump told his aides to prepare for an extended blockade and that it carries less of a risk for the US than resuming hostilities or walking away from the conflict without securing a deal that curbs Iran’s nuclear activities.

The broader market came under pressure on Wednesday after three FOMC members dissented in favor of no easing bias in the FOMC ‘s decision to keep policy unchanged. Also, hawkish comments from Fed Chair Powell weighed on stocks, as he said a bit of monetary policy restraint is the right place to be. The 10-year T-note yield rose +6 bp to a 1-month high of 4.41%.
The Nasdaq 100 moved higher on Wednesday as technology stocks rallied on signs that demand for AI infrastructure remains strong. NXP Semiconductors NV rose +25%, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc rose by more than +10% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings results. The markets are awaiting earnings from four of the Magnificent Seven technology stocks after Wednesday’s close, as Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms will report quarterly results.
Wednesday’s US housing starts and core capital goods new orders reports were better than expected, a supportive factor for stocks.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -1.6% in the week ended April 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +1.2% and the refinancing sub-index down -4.4%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose by +2 bp to 6.37% from 6.35% in the prior week.
US Mar housing starts unexpectedly rose +10.8% m/m to a 15-month high of 1.502 million, stronger than expectations of a decline to 1.380 million. Mar building permits, a proxy for future construction, fell -10.8% m/m to a 7-month low of 1.372 million, weaker than expectations of 1.390 million.
US Mar capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts, a proxy for capital spending, rose +3.3% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.5% m/m and the largest increase in 5.75 years.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) soared by more than +6% on Wednesday as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis, as flows of crude, natural gas, and oil products from the Persian Gulf have been cut off since the war began in late February. Crude prices raced to their highs on Wednesday after President Trump told Axios that he will not lift a naval blockade of Iran's ports until he secures a deal with Iran to address the country's nuclear program. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
As expected, the FOMC kept the fed funds target rate unchanged at 3.50% to 3.75%. The vote was 8-4 in favor of the decision, with Fed Governor Miran dissenting in favor of a -25 bp rate cut. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, and Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan said they "supported maintaining the target range for the federal funds rate but did not support inclusion of an easing bias in the statement at this time."
The post-meeting statement said, "Developments in the Middle East are contributing to a high level of uncertainty." Also, "job gains have remained low, on average," and the jobless rate "has been little changed in recent months, while inflation "is elevated, in part reflecting the recent increase in global energy prices."
Fed Chair Powell said policymakers think the policy stance is in a very good place to wait, as inflation is kind of misbehaving, and that maybe a little bit of restriction in monetary policy is the right place to be.
Kevin Warsh won the banking confirmation vote of the Senate Banking Committee on Wednesday, putting him on track to be confirmed as Fed Chair by the full Senate before Jerome Powell’s term ends on May 15. Fed Chair Powell said after Wednesday’s FOMC meeting that he will continue to serve as Fed Governor “for a period of time to be determined.” Mr. Powell’s seat on the Board of Governors doesn’t expire until 2028.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate cut or a rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of Wednesday, 81% of the 220 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Wednesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 3-week low and closed down -0.34%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.71%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average did not trade, as markets in Japan were closed for the Showa Day holiday.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Wednesday closed down -16 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +5.5 bp to 4.4010%. Jun T-notes fell to a 4-week low, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 1-month high of 4.430%. T-notes were under pressure on Thursday amid rising crude oil prices, as WTI surged more than +6% to a 32-week high, boosting inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to 1 14.5-month high of 2.479% on Wednesday. T-notes were also pressured by stronger-than-expected US economic reports on Mar housing starts and Mar core capital goods new orders.
T-notes sank to their lows on Wednesday afternoon after three FOMC members dissented in favor of a no-easing bias in the committee’s policy decision. Also, Fed Chair Powell said a little bit of restriction in monetary policy is the right place to be.
European government bond yields moved higher on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 1-month high of 3.118% and finished up +4.3 bp to 3.110%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.078% and finished up +6.5 bp to 5.071%.
Eurozone Apr economic confidence fell -3.2 to a nearly 5.5-year low of 93.0, weaker than expectations of 95.1.
Eurozone Mar M3 money supply rose +3.2% y/y, stronger than expectations of +3.1% y/y.
Swaps are discounting a 12% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) closed up more than +25% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after forecasting Q2 revenue of $3.35 billion to $3.55 billion, stronger than the consensus of $3.27 billion. Intel (INTC) closed up more than +12%, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed up +11% after forecasting Q4 adjusted EPS of $4.80 to $5.20, well above the consensus of $3.96. Also, Sandisk (SNDK) and Microchip Technology (MCHP) closed up more than +6%, and Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +5%. In addition, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed up more than +4%, and Micron Technology (MU) and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +2%.
Energy producers and service providers rallied on Wednesday after WTI crude oil rose more than +6% to a 3-week high. Phillips 66 (PSX) closed up more than +5%, and APA Corp (APA) and Valero Energy (VLO) closed up more than +4%. Also, Marathon Petroleum (MPC), Occidental Petroleum (OXY), Devon Energy (DVN), and ConocoPhillips (COP) closed up more than +3%, and Diamondback Energy (FANG), Exxon Mobil (XOM), Halliburton (HAL), and Chevron (CVX) closed up more than +2%.
Airlines and cruise line operators were under pressure on Wednesday as WTI crude oil rose more than +6% to a 2-week high. Alaska Air Group (ALK) closed down more than -3%, and American Airlines Group (AAL), Southwest Airlines (LUV), and Carnival (CCL) closed down more than -2%. Also, United Airlines Holdings (UAL) andDelta Air Lines (DAL) closed down more than -1%.
Bloom Energy (BE) closed up more than +27% after boosting its full-year revenue forecast to $3.4 billion to $3.8 billion from a prior forecast of $3.1 billion to $3.3 billion, above the consensus of $3.25 billion.
Generac Holdings (GNRC) closed up more than +16% after reporting Q1 net sales of $1.06 billion, better than the consensus of $1.05 billion.
Rush Street Interactive (RSI) closed up more than +16% after forecasting full-year revenue between $1.49 billion and $1.54 billion, better than the consensus of $1.38 billion.
Visa (V) closed up more than +8% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q2 net revenue of $11.23 billion, stronger than the consensus of $10.74 billion.
Starbucks (SBUX) closed up more than +8% after reporting Q2 comparable sales were up +6.20%, well above the consensus of +3.65%, and raised its full-year comparable sales forecast to at least +5% from a prior view of at least +3%.
General Dynamics (GD) closed up more than +7% after reporting Q1 revenue of $13.48 billion, well above the consensus of $12.70 billion.
Teradyne (TER) closed down more than -19% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting Q2 revenue of $1.15 billion to $1.25 billion, failing to exceed the consensus of $1.20 billion meaningfully.
GE Healthcare (GEHC) closed down more than -13% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after cutting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $4.80 to $5.00 from a previous forecast of $4.95 to $5.15, weaker than the consensus of $5.06.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) closed down more than -13% after reporting Q1 net revenue of $1.07 billion, below the consensus of $1.14 billion.
Brown-Forman (BF.B) closed down more than -10% after JPMorgan Chase downgraded the stock to underweight from neutral with a price target of $23.
CoStar Group (CSGP) closed down more than -5% after forecasting full-year revenue of $3.78 billion to $3.82 billion, the midpoint below the consensus of $3.81 billion.
Ingersoll Rand (IR) closed down more than -4% after forecasting full-year organic revenue to climb 0% to +2%, the midpoint below the consensus of +1.44%.

Stock Market Today, April 29: Advanced Micro Devices Rises After Analyst Upgrade Points to Data Center GPU Demand Ahead of Earnings

Broadcom’s AVGO Semiconductor business is benefiting from the strong AI revenues, which surged 106% year over year in the first quarter of fiscal 2026. AI networking revenues grew 60% year over year and represented one-third of AI revenues. The company continues to gain market share in AI networking, driven by strong adoption of Tomahawk 6 switch as well as Broadcom’s 200G SerDes, which are capturing demand from hyperscalers.
Tomahawk 6 family switch series is now shipping in production volume. Tomahawk 6 doubles the throughput of its predecessor, Tomahawk 5, and is highly optimized for scale-out and scale-up AI networks used for training and inference. Tomahawk 6 delivers exceptional flexibility with support for 100G and 200G SerDes. It provides one of the industry’s most comprehensive sets of AI routing capabilities and interconnect options, built to handle the demand of AI clusters scaling beyond one million custom accelerators (XPUs).
An expanding portfolio bodes well for Broadcom’s prospects. The company has introduced 3.5D XPU, 102.4T Ethernet switches with co-packaged optics, 400G/lane optical DSPs, 200G/lane Ethernet retimers and AECs, and PCIe Gen6 connectivity solutions. AVGO has also extended a partnership with Meta Platforms META under which the companies will co-develop multiple generations of META’s custom AI chips (MTIA). AVGO will provide its XPU platform and advanced networking technologies to help Meta Platforms build a high-performance AI infrastructure. The partnership includes an initial deployment exceeding 1 gigawatt of computing capacity, with plans to scale to multiple gigawatts over time.
Broadcom expects a positive second-quarter fiscal 2026 performance, with AI revenues of $10.7 billion, suggesting a 140% year-over-year upsurge. AI networking is expected to accelerate in the second quarter of fiscal 2026 and grow to 40% of the total AI revenues. Semiconductor revenues are expected to be $14.8 billion, indicating 76% year-over-year growth. Broadcom expects revenues of $22 billion, indicating 47% year-over-year growth for the second quarter of fiscal 2026. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for revenues is currently pegged at $22.04 billion, suggesting 46.9% growth from the figure reported in the year-ago quarter.
AVGO Faces Tough Competition in the Semiconductor Market
Broadcom is facing stiff competition from NVIDIA NVDA and Advanced Micro Devices AMD in the semiconductor space.
NVIDIA is benefiting from the strong growth of AI and high-performance accelerated computing. The growing demand for generative AI and large language models using GPUs based on NVIDIA’s Hopper and Blackwell architectures is aiding data center revenues. The company’s latest Blackwell Ultra GPUs deliver up to 25 times the token throughput for AI inference compared to Hopper 100, which strengthens NVIDIA’s dominance in AI-driven computing.
AMD’s prospects are benefiting from strong demand for EPYC processors that power cloud and enterprise workloads. Emerging AI use cases and rapid adoption of agentic AI are generating demand for general-purpose compute infrastructure, benefiting EPYC demand. Apart from EPYC, AMD’s prospects are driven by strong demand for Instinct accelerators. The launch of the Instinct MI350 series that supports deployments powered by AMD CPUs, GPUs and NICs has strengthened AMD’s system-level capabilities.

Right now, a lack of high-performance CPUs is becoming one of the biggest AI infrastructure bottlenecks, which is also lifting prices and will be a gross margin driver for the company. Meanwhile, AMD is looking to remain at the forefront of data center CPU technology by introducing high-core CPUs specifically designed for use with agentic AI.
At the same time, the company is also well positioned with its GPUs to take some share in the inference market. Its new chips use a chiplet design that packs more high-bandwidth memory (HBM) onto its chips, making them ideal for inference. It also has signed GPU deals with OpenAI and Meta Platforms that should help drive growth this year and beyond.
Between its CPU and GPU opportunities, this is a top stock to own for 2026.
Micron: A memory winner
One of the other big bottlenecks in AI infrastructure right now is with memory, particularly HBM, which is a high-end form of DRAM (dynamic random access memory). Meanwhile, the shortage of HBM is leading to supply demand imbalances throughout the entire DRAM supply chain, leading to surging prices.
To perform optimally, GPUs and other AI chips need to be packaged with HBM to quickly offload and retrieve data. As such, as AI accelerators continue to grow, so does the need for more HBM, which is already in short supply. To make things even more complicated, HBM can require more than 3 times the wafer capacity of ordinary DRAM, making it more difficult to scale up.
One of the companies benefiting from these current industry dynamics is Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU). It is one of the big three DRAM makers, along with its Korean counterparts Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. The supply-demand environment in the DRAM market has led its revenue to skyrocket and its gross margin to balloon.
The memory market has historically been highly cyclical, with large boom-and-bust cycles. However, the DRAM market now has a powerful headwind behind it with the rise of AI, which shows no end in sight. Meanwhile, Micron and its competitors are smartly starting to sign long-term deals (three to five years) to lock in minimum HBM commitments, which should also help reduce some of the cyclicality of this business.
With a forward P/E of just 5 times fiscal 2027 estimates, the stock has plenty of upside potential this year and beyond.

The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently failed to meet its goals for new users and sales, undercutting the shares of OpenAI partners and AI infrastructure stocks, including Nvidia, Oracle, Advanced Micro Devices, and CoreWeave.

On the positive side, Coca-Cola rose more than +3% to limit losses in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting stronger-than-expected Q1 net revenue.
Stocks bounced from their worst levels on Tuesday amid better-than-expected US economic news. The Conference Board Apr consumer confidence index unexpectedly rose +0.6 to a 4-month high of 92.8, stronger than expectations of a decline to 89.0. Also, the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey rose +3 to a 14-month high of 3, stronger than expectations of 1. In addition, the Feb S&P composite-20 home price index rose +0.90% y/y, weaker than expectations of +1.12% y/y and the smallest pace of increase in more than 2.5 years.
Soaring crude oil prices are boosting inflation expectations, pushing bond yields higher, and weighing on stocks. WTI crude oil jumped to a 2-week high on Tuesday after the New York Times reported that President Trump is not satisfied with Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, which includes postponing nuclear negotiations. Mr. Trump has said any deal must include agreements to curb Iran’s nuclear activities. The 10-year T-note yield climbed to a 3-week high of 4.38% on Tuesday. The 2-day FOMC meeting began on Tuesday and concludes on Wednesday, and the Fed is expected to keep monetary policy unchanged.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) rose by more than +3% on Tuesday as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment this Wednesday and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the Tue-Wed policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of Tuesday, 80% of the 172 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets settled lower on Tuesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2.5-week low and closed down -0.41%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.19%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.02%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Tuesday closed down -5.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +1.0 bp to 4.350%. June T-notes fell to a 3-week low on Tuesday, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 3-week high of 4.378%. Tuesday’s +3% jump in WTI crude oil prices boosted inflation expectations and weighed on T-notes. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 14-month high of 2.472% on Tuesday. Also, better-than-expected US economic news on Tuesday, including Apr consumer confidence and the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey, was bearish for T-note prices.
T-notes recovered from their worst level on Tuesday amid strong demand for the Treasury’s $44 billion auction of 7-year T-notes that had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.51, above the 10-auction average of 2.50.
European government bond yields moved higher on Tuesday. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2-week high of 3.086% and finished up +3.4 bp to 3.067%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.028% and finished up +3.4 bp to 5.006%.
The ECB's Mar 1-year CPI expectations rate rose to 4.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.8% and the highest figure in nearly 2.5 years. The Mar 3-year CPI expectations rate rose to 3.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.6% and the highest figure in three years.
Swaps are discounting an 11% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
AI infrastructure stocks and OpenAI partners retreated on Tuesday after the Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently missed its own revenue and new-user targets. ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed down more than -7% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Applied Digital (APLD), Applied Materials (AMAT), Sandisk (SNDK), CoreWeave (CRWV), and Vertiv Holdings (VRT) closed down more than -5%. Also, Broadcom (AVGO), Oracle (ORCL), and KLA Corp (KLAC) closed down more than -4%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Micron Technology (MU), Marvell Technology (MRVL), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -3%. In addition, GE Vernova (GEV) and Western Digital (WDC) closed down more than -2%.
Mining stocks fell on Tuesday, amid the sell-off in gold, silver, and copper prices. Newmont Corp (NEM) and Coeur Mining (CDE) closed down more than -5%, and Anglogold Ashanti (AU), Southern Copper (SCCO), and Hecla Mining (HL) closed down more than -4%. Also, Barrick Mining (B) and Freeport McMoRan (FCX) closed down more than -3%.
Packaging stocks rose on Tuesday after Citigroup said Smurfit WestRock would raise US containerboard prices by $50 per ton, effective June 1. Packaging Corp of America (PKG) and International Paper (IP) closed up by more than +4%, and Smurfit Westrock Plc (SW) closed up more than +1%.
Rambus (RMBS) closed down more than -20% after reporting Q1 EPS of 55 cents, weaker than the consensus of 65 cents.
Spotify Technology SA (SPOT) closed down more than -12% after reporting Q1 operating income of $737 million, below the consensus of $787 million.
Alexandria Real Estate Equities (ARE) closed down more than -11% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $671.0 million, weaker than the consensus of $692.7 million.
Qiagen NV (QGEN) closed down more than -10% after forecasting full-year CER net sales of up +1% to +2%, well below the consensus of +4.62%.
Pentair Plc (PNR) closed down more than -10% after forecasting Q2 adjusted EPS of $1.47 to $1.50, below the consensus of $1.50.
Corning (GLW) closed down more than -8% after forecasting Q2 core EPS of 73 cents to 77 cents, the midpoint below the consensus of 76 cents.
Sherwin-Williams (SHW) closed down more than -3% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials after forecasting full-year adjusted EPS of $11.50 to $11.90, the midpoint below the consensus of $11.72, and saying it sees little chance of end-market recovery this year due to weak consumer sentiment.
United Parcel Service (UPS) closed down more than -3% after leaving its full-year financial guidance unchanged despite reporting better-than-expected Q1 sales and profit.
Centene (CNC) closed up more than +13% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $49.94 billion, above the consensus of $47.41 billion, and raising its full-year revenue forecast to $187.5 billion to $191.5 billion from $186.5 billion to $190.5 billion, the midpoint above the consensus of $188.79 billion.
Franklin Resources (BEN) closed up more than +6% after reporting Q2 adjusted EPS of 71 cents, stronger than the consensus of 55 cents.
Nucor (NUE) closed up more than +4% after reporting Q1 net sales of $9.50 billion, stronger than the consensus of $8.87 billion.
Coca-Cola (KO) closed up more than +3% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q1 net revenue of $12.50 billion, better than the consensus of $12.25 billion.
Dynatrace (DT) closed up more than +1% after the Wall Street Journal reported that Starboard Value LP took a stake in the company and is pushing the company to better capitalize on the shift to AI.

Stocks Fall on AI Jitters and Surging Crude Oil Prices

Monday, the stock market was on fire, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite both hitting new all-time highs, and optimism reigned. The mood turned dour on Tuesday morning as a report about one of the most consequential stocks in artificial intelligence (AI) caught investors off guard, sending AI chip stocks tumbling.
Growth is slowing at OpenAI, as the ChatGPT parent missed internal goals for revenue and user growth, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. The company was shooting for 1 billion users by the end of 2025, a goal it has yet to hit, according to the report. If true, this could have important implications for the future of AI.

The first domino to fall?
OpenAI was arguably the catalyst that kick-started the AI revolution. When ChatGPT was released, it became the fastest-growing consumer app in history, gaining more than 1 million users within five days of its launch in November 2022, and soaring to 123 million monthly active users within three months. Earlier this year, OpenAI announced it had 900 million weekly active users and 50 million subscribers.
To feed this unprecedented demand, OpenAI has spun a web of deals with some of the biggest names in technology -- including chipmakers and cloud operators -- arguing that compute capacity was the biggest obstacle to its growth. The magnitude of these agreements is staggering, with more than $1 trillion worth of deals inked in 2025 alone:
The implication is that if OpenAI's user growth slows, its revenue will follow suit, and the company won't have sufficient resources to pay for all its AI chip and computing obligations. Indeed, CFO Sarah Friar expressed concerns that OpenAI wouldn't be able to "pay for future computing contracts if revenue doesn't grow fast enough," according to the report.
OpenAI pushed back, arguing that the company is "firing on all cylinders" and calling the report "prime clickbait." Investors were unconvinced, pushing AI stocks lower, with Nvidia down 3%, and AMD and Oracle each down 4% on the news (as of this writing).
It's important to point out that these deals aren't driving current growth. In the most recent quarter, Nvidia's revenue jumped 73% year over year, AMD's climbed 34%, and Oracle's grew 22%. Slowing growth at OpenAI was inevitable and might push out future growth. That said, missing an internal forecast isn't a deal breaker, nor is it a dire warning.
What this means for investors
When ChatGPT was released, it had the stage to itself, but that was short-lived. In the years since, a host of AI tools have emerged, with each vying for market share. Alphabet's Google Gemini has amassed 750 million monthly active users, Microsoft Copilot has 150 million, and estimates place Anthropic's Claude -- a relative newcomer -- at between 18 million and 30 million users, though no official tally has been released.
This suggests that while the pool of AI users is still growing, it's also being reorganized, as users find the AI tool best suited to their needs.
This means that demand isn't falling, it's merely being redistributed among the available options. This further suggests that the sell-off currently plaguing AI chip stocks is overdone. Furthermore, Nvidia and Oracle are currently selling for 25 times and 22 times forward earnings, respectively, so they're attractively priced relative to the opportunity. AMD is a bit pricier at 48 times forward earnings.
A slowing of OpenAI's growth doesn't suggest anything dire for the broader AI market, but merely a redistribution of the wealth. As such, investors should ignore the hyperbole and stay invested.

After grabbing the earlier lead in large language models and the brand awareness with ChatGPT, rivals like Google Gemini and Anthropic's Claude have caught up. A few months ago, OpenAI issued a "code red" in the face of stiff competition from Google and Anthropic, aiming to improve its core technology and reclaim the lead in the AI race.
At the same time, OpenAI's financial prospects began to look messier, even as it has raised roughly $200 billion in its history, including a round that brought in $122 billion that closed a month ago, to fund its breakneck data center expansion.
While OpenAI has grown rapidly, it's also putting up increasingly wider losses, and it needs the business to continue its rapid pace of growth to sustain the business and pay for the chips and computing power it needs to run its models.
According to The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is now failing to do that, missing key internal growth targets that put the future of the business in question.
What's happening at OpenAI
OpenAI is now expressing doubt about its ability to hit its financial targets and pay for future computing contracts, which could spell trouble for the rest of the AI sector as OpenAI has future spending commitments of around $600 billion to chipmakers like Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and AMD, cloud infrastructure partners like Microsoft, Oracle,and CoreWeave, and others.
The "expand-at-all-costs" to secure computing capacity strategy that has guided the company since the launch of ChatGPT has now left it in a difficult spot, especially as both its user and revenue growth rates have slowed. Meanwhile, Anthropic seems to have grabbed the mantle as the leading disruptor in AI as its updates have rattled the software sector, sparking sell-offs on multiple occasions. Its Mythos AI model was even deemed too powerful to be released to the general public.
According to a report in The Information from last September, OpenAI is planning to burn through $115 billion by 2029 as it ramps up on computing capacity. However, that cash burn forecast could be significantly larger now, given the slowdown in growth. If OpenAI's prospects continue to dim, its valuation could collapse. Investors are betting the company will eventually be highly profitable, despite its current spending spree, or it wouldn't have received a valuation of close to $1 trillion.
What it means for the AI sector
A troubled OpenAI would be a problem for partners like Nvidia and Microsoft that are counting on revenue from the AI start-up, but it doesn't necessarily doom the broader AI sector. OpenAI's slowdown seems to be a result of its weakening competitive position against rivals like Google and Anthropic, rather than questions about long-term demand for AI capabilities. For investors, it depends on whether OpenAI's loss is the gain of Anthropic or another AI model company.
Still, it's not surprising that stocks like Nvidia pulled back on the news, and the Nasdaq Composite fell more than 1% on the report on Tuesday. OpenAI has been the flagbearer for the AI industry since it's took the market by storm, though we could be seeing a changing of the guard as Anthropic just reached a valuation of $1 trillion in private secondary markets.
If the WSJ report is accurate, OpenAI could be forced to significantly retrench. For now, that doesn't seem to be cause for alarm. However, if Anthropic faces similar growth and cash burn issues, then the industry could be in real trouble.

The Conference Board Apr consumer confidence index unexpectedly rose +0.6 to a 4-month high of 92.8, stronger than expectations of a decline to 89.0. Also, the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey rose +3 to a 14-month high of 3, stronger than expectations of 1. In addition, the Feb S&P composite-20 home price index rose +0.90% y/y, weaker than expectations of +1.12% y/y and the smallest pace of increase in more than 2.5 years.
Soaring crude oil prices are also boosting inflation expectations, pushing bond yields higher and weighing on stocks. WTI crude oil jumped to a 2-week high today after the New York Times reported that President Trump is not satisfied with Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, which includes postponing nuclear negotiations. Mr. Trump has said any deal must include agreements to curb Iran’s nuclear activities. The 10-year T-note yield climbed to a 3-week high of 4.38% today ahead of the start of the 2-day FOMC meeting, where the Fed is expected to keep monetary policy unchanged.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) are up by more than +3% today as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment this Wednesday and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the Tue-Wed policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of today, 80% of the 150 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets are lower today. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2.5-week low and is down -0.26%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.19%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.02%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) today are down -8 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +2.8 bp to 4.368%. June T-notes fell to a 3-week low today, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 3-week high of 4.378%. Today’s +3% jump in WTI crude oil prices is boosting inflation expectations and weighing on T-notes. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 14-month high of 2.472% today. Also, better-than-expected US economic news today on Apr consumer confidence and the Apr Richmond Fed manufacturing survey were bearish for T-note prices. In addition, supply pressures are undercutting T-note prices, as the Treasury will auction $30 billion of 2-year floating rate notes and $44 billion of 7-year T-notes later today.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2-week high of 3.086% and is up +4.0 bp to 3.073%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.028% and is up +4.4 bp to 5.016%.
The ECB's Mar 1-year CPI expectations rate rose to 4.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.8% and the highest figure in nearly 2.5 years. The Mar 3-year CPI expectations rate rose to 3.0% from 2.5% in Feb, stronger than expectations of 2.6% and the highest figure in three years.
Swaps are discounting a 13% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.

AI infrastructure stocks and OpenAI partners are retreating today after the Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recently missed its own revenue and new-user targets. ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) is down more than -8% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100, and Applied Digital (APLD), Sandisk (SNDK), and Vertiv Holdings (VRT) are down more than -6%. Also, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Applied Materials (AMAT), Micron Technology (MU), CoreWeave (CRWV), GE Vernova (GEV), and Lam Research (LRCX) are down more than -5%, and Western Digital (WDC), ASML Holding NV (ASML), Marvell Technology (MRVL), Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), Broadcom (AVGO), Oracle (ORCL), and KLA Corp (KLAC) are down more than -4%. In addition, Nvidia (NVDA) is down more than -3% to lead losers in the Dow Jones Industrials.

Alexandria Real Estate Equities (ARE) is down more than -10% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $671.0 million, weaker than the consensus of $692.7 million.
Spotify Technology SA (SPOT) is down more than -10% after reporting Q1 operating income of $737 million, below the consensus of $787 million.

This indicates a shift from traditional sectors into high-value, innovation-driven markets, positioning women at the center of future growth themes.
At the same time, capital is becoming more concentrated in fewer, larger deals—often in AI—suggesting that while top-tier female-led companies are scaling rapidly, broader participation remains uneven.
Female founders are increasingly focusing on building scalable, exit-ready businesses rather than just early-stage growth. Recent data shows their exit values have more than doubled year over year, with female-led firms accounting for about 25% of U.S. exits. This reflects a more mature approach, with greater emphasis on sustainable growth, stronger leadership teams and early exit planning. As a result, women entrepreneurs are not only creating ventures but also successfully scaling and monetizing them, improving long-term value creation.
Despite strong progress, a significant funding gap continues to limit the full potential of female founders. All-female founding teams still receive only about 1–2% of total U.S. venture capital, even though evidence suggests they often deliver higher capital efficiency and competitive returns. This imbalance highlights a structural constraint within the venture ecosystem, where access to early-stage and growth funding remains uneven. As a result, many promising female-led startups may struggle to scale at the same pace as their peers, underscoring a sizable untapped opportunity for investors willing to address this gap.

Rather than trying to pick winners in AI, by investing in the iShares Semiconductor ETF, you can get exposure to the big names through just a single investment. That's because this ETF's portfolio features many top AI stocks, including Broadcom, Advanced Micro Devices, and Nvidia -- those stocks are among its largest holdings.
There are 30 stocks in its portfolio, suggesting that while it isn't overly diverse, it can still be an effective way to reduce your overall risk.
