Also, the strength in chip stocks today is boosting technology stocks and leading the broader market higher.

Some favorable corporate news is also supporting gains in stocks today. Block is up more than +7% after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that the company will replace Hess Corp in the S&P 500 before the opening of trade on Wednesday. Also, Domino’s Pizza is up more than +2% after reporting better-than-expected Q2 revenue, and Verizon Communications is up more than +2% after raising the lower end of its full-year earnings forecast.
Recent trade news has put some downward pressure on stocks. Last Wednesday, President Trump announced that he intends to send a tariff letter to more than 150 countries, notifying them that their tariff rates could be 10% or 15%, effective August 1.
Also, President Trump recently announced that the US will impose 30% tariffs on US imports from the European Union and Mexico, effective August 1. In addition, Mr. Trump said that a 35% tariff on some Canadian products would take effect on August 1, up from the current 25%. Mr. Trump also imposed a 50% tariff on copper imports, which will include semi-finished goods, and stated that drug companies could face tariffs as high as 200% on imports if they don’t relocate production to the US within the next year.
The markets this week will focus on any tariff news along with the announcement of any new trade deals. On Wednesday, June existing home sales are expected to fall -0.7% m/m to 4.00 million. On Thursday, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to climb by +6,000 to 227,000. Also, the July S&P US manufacturing PMI is expected to slip -0.4 to 52.5. Finally, on Thursday, June new home sales are expected to climb +4.3% m/m to 650,000. On Friday, June capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts are expected to increase by +0.2% m/m.
Federal funds futures prices are discounting the chances for a -25 bp rate cut at 5% at the July 29-30 FOMC meeting and 58% at the following meeting on September 16-17.
The markets are awaiting a heavy slate of quarterly corporate earnings results this week, including Alphabet and Tesla on Wednesday. About one-fifth of the companies in the S&P 500 are expected to report their Q2 earnings results this week. Early results now show S&P 500 earnings are on track to rise +3.2% for the second quarter, better than the pre-season expectations of +2.8% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Also, only six of the eleven S&P 500 sectors are projected to post an increase in earnings, the fewest since Q1 of 2023, according to Yardeni Research.
Overseas stock markets today are mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 is down -0.42%. China’s Shanghai Composite rallied to a 9.5-month high and closed up +0.72%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 was closed today for the Marine Day holiday.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU25) today are up +14 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down -5.8 bp to 4.358%. Sep T-notes today rose to a 1-week high, and the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 1-week low of 4.354%. T-notes are climbing today on carryover support from last Friday when Fed Governor Christopher Waller said he backs a Fed rate cut at the July 29-30 FOMC meeting. T-notes also have carryover support from today’s rally in 10-year German bunds to a 2-week high.
European government bond yields today are moving lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 2-week low of 2.611% and is down -7.7 bp to 2.618%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down -6.1 bp to 4.613%.
Swaps are discounting the chances at 1% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at Thursday’s policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
Strength in chip stocks is supporting gains in the broader market. ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) is up more than +3% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100. Also, GlobalFoundries (GFS), ON Semiconductor Corp (ON), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), Qualcomm (QCOM), and Broadcom (AVGO) are up more than +2%. In addition, Lam Research (LRCX), Intel (INTC), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Applied Materials (AMAT) are up more than +1%.
Block (XYZ) is up more than +7% after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that the company will replace Hess Corp in the S&P 500 before the opening of trade on Wednesday.
Verizon Communications (VZ) is up more than +4% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrials after raising the lower end of its full-year earnings forecast to +1% to 3% from a previous estimate of 0% to +3%.
Equinix Inc. (EQIX) is up more than +2% after Elliot Investment Management said it has built up a stake in the company in an effort to get it to take steps to boost its share price.
Pinterest (PINS) is up more than +2% after Morgan Stanley upgraded the stock to overweight from equal weight with a price target of $45.
Dollar Tree (DLTR) is up more than +1% after Barclays upgraded the stock to overweight from equal weight with a price target of $120.
Invesco Ltd (IVZ) is up more than +1% after TD Cowen upgraded the stock to buy from hold with a price target of $25.
Natural gas producers are under pressure today, with nat-gas futures (NQQ25) plunging more than -6% to a 1-week low on forecasts for cooler US temperatures later this month. As a result, EQT Corp (EQT) is down more than -6% to lead losers in the S&P 500. Also, Antero Resources (AR) is down more than -6%, and Cheniere Energy (LNG) and Expand Energy (EXE) are down more than -5%.
Sarepta Therapeutics (SRPT) is down more than -4% after it refused to pause all shipments of its Elevidys treatment after three deaths were linked to the company’s gene therapies.
Biogen (BIIB) is down more than -2% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after Truist Securities downgraded the stock to hold from buy.
Molina Healthcare (MOH) is down more than -2% after TD Cowen cut its price target on the stock to $283 from $369.
Centene (CNC) is down more than -1% after TD Cowen downgraded the stock to hold from buy.

What Intel and AMD Stock Investors Must Know Before Wednesday Afternoon

During the process, Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processors showcased the fastest NPU response time with an impressive token latency and highest NPU throughput. In the quarter under review, Intel expanded its collaboration with original equipment manufacturers like HP and Lenovo to develop next-generation AI PC. HP’s recent lineup of cutting-edge AI PCs, including EliteBook X, EliteBook Ultra and EliteBook 8, is powered by Intel Core Ultra series processors. Lenovo also deployed the Intel Core Ultra processor to power its leading-edge AI PC ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable. The company is also witnessing healthy demand for its Xeon 6 processor in high-performance computing (“HPC”) and AI-driven workloads. The processor offers significantly faster memory performance at high-capacity configurations compared with its competitor Advanced Micro Devices’ AMD EPYC processor.
Intel also expanded its Arc GPU lineup to deliver an impressive AI experience for PC, workstation and edge use cases. These factors are expected to have a favorable impact on second-quarter earnings. However, Intel’s growing ambition in GPU space is threatened by NVIDIA Corporation NVDA’s strong presence in the GPU domain across AI, cloud and data center applications.
In the to-be-reported quarter, Intel announced that it has inked a definitive agreement with Silver Lake to sell 51% of the Altera business. It will significantly bolster Intel’s liquidity position and drive investment in growth initiatives.

Nvidia and AMD Stock Investors Got Massive News From TSMC

Micron Technology, Inc. MU has had a strong run so far in 2025, gaining 35.9% year to date. This is far ahead of the broader Zacks Computer and Technology sector, which rose just 9.5% in the same period.
Micron has even outpaced major chipmakers Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. AMD, NVIDIA Corporation NVDA and Broadcom Inc. AVGO. Shares of Advanced Micro Devices, NVIDIA and Broadcom have soared 30%, 28.4% and 22.2%, respectively.

New Tech Trends Fuel Micron’s Growth
Micron sits at the heart of several transformative tech trends. Its exposure to artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance data centers, autonomous vehicles and industrial IoT uniquely positions the company for sustainable long-term growth.
As AI adoption accelerates, the demand for advanced memory solutions like DRAM and NAND is soaring. Micron’s investments in next-gen DRAM and 3D NAND ensure it remains competitive in delivering the performance needed for modern computing.
The company’s diversification strategy is also bearing fruit. Compared with other semiconductor players, Micron has a lower P/S multiple than Advanced Micro Devices, NVIDIA and Broadcom. At present, Advanced Micro Devices, NVIDIA and Broadcom trade at P/S multiples of 7.3, 18.91 and 18.55, respectively.
Given its superior scale and exposure to AI growth, MU’s relative valuation strengthens the case for buying the stock for now.

3 Reasons to Buy Taiwan Semi Besides +61% Q2 Profit Surge
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., or TSMC, recently reported a record surge in second-quarter profit as it continues to benefit from the artificial intelligence (AI) megatrend. TSMC is also expected to grow further for three main reasons. Let’s examine those reasons and what makes TSMC stock a compelling buy now.
TSMC’s Positive Q2 Results & Outlook Boosts Share Price
On Thursday, TSMC reported that its net income surged 60.7% year over year to NT$398.27 billion in the second quarter, a record high and significantly higher than estimates. TSMC’s revenues for the June quarter came in at NT$933.80 billion, up 38.7% year on year, and above projections.
TSMC’s second-quarter sales rose as demand for AI chips remained strong. The company’s high-performance computing division, which includes AI and 5G applications, accounted for 60% of the second-quarter revenues. Strong demand for TSMC’s progressive 3nm and 5nm node semiconductor chips also contributed to revenue growth.
Banking on the growing demand for TSMC’s advanced processors for clients, including NVIDIA Corp. and Apple Inc., the company projected third-quarter revenues between $31.8 billion and $33.0 billion, up 38% year over year. For 2025, TSMC expects revenues to surge nearly 30% when measured in U.S. dollar terms.
After the recent positive quarterly results and an optimistic forecast, TSMC stock popped. TSMC’s shares have outperformed the Semiconductor - Circuit Foundry industry year to date (+24.2% vs. 20.3%).
3 More Reasons to Be Bullish on TSMC Stock
TSMC holds a leading position in the semiconductor industry. It controls nearly 67% of semiconductor manufacturing, giving it significant pricing power. Being the first to introduce the third-party foundry model also grants TSMC dominance in the chip foundry sector. Regarding dominance, all major players in the industry, such as NVIDIA, Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. and Broadcom Inc., are the key customers of TSMC. Conversely, TSMC’s competitor, Intel Corp., has faced recent difficulties.
TSMC also faces headwinds from President Donald Trump’s tariffs. Taiwan is subject to 32% tariffs, with Trump warning of further tariffs on semiconductors. U.S. export controls also restrict TSMC’s business with China. However, recently, NVIDIA and AMD received assurance from the U.S. government to ship products to China, which is a positive development for TSMC as well. Additionally, TSMC is expanding beyond Taiwan, with plans to establish manufacturing plants in Japan, Germany and the United States soon.
Manufacturing a semiconductor plant is not easy; it involves a complex and cumbersome process. The technology is not only intricate but also requires significant capital investment. As a result, many advanced companies have chosen not to build their facilities and instead rely on TSMC. This high barrier to entry has helped TSMC keep potential rivals at bay.
TSMC Stock to Buy Hand Over Fist
While encouraging second-quarter results boosted TSMC’s stock price, the company is primed for growth in the years ahead due to its competitive advantages, expansion efforts and significant barriers to entry in the semiconductor industry, where it already holds a dominant position.
Brokers are also optimistic about the company’s prospects. They predict TSMC stock’s average short-term price target at $244.75, reflecting a 3% increase from the last closing price of $237.56. The highest target stands at $270, suggesting a potential upside of 13.7%.

Many artificial intelligence (AI) stocks have prospered as investors have become more open to the technology's potential. This is especially true for stocks like Nvidia and Palantir Technologies, whose successes are responsible for the AI boom in large part.
Still, that boom has certainly not included all AI stocks, and many of them have had their share of struggles. Nonetheless, as their competitive advantages become more apparent, such stocks have tended to boom. With that in mind, one AI stock looks likely to stand out with a second-half comeback.

The comeback stock
The artificial intelligence stock set for a recovery in the second half of 2025 is Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD). Admittedly, this may seem like a strange pick given its performance in 2024. After an intra-day peak of more than $227 per share in March 2024, AMD stock steadily fell.
Continued struggles in the gaming and embedded segments weighed on the stock, and investors further soured on the stock as its competitive lag with Nvidia in the AI accelerator market became more apparent. In early 2025, DeepSeek's breakthrough with lower-cost AI chips did not dampen the pessimism, as AMD stock briefly lost as much as two-thirds of its value in a 13-month period.
However, April's closing low at just above $78 per share came amid investor concern over "Liberation Day" when the Trump administration unveiled its tariff plan. From there, the semiconductor stock recovered along with the market and further accelerated on June 12 when AMD announced the upcoming MI400 GPU.
This next-generation chip will come installed in a server rack called Helios, and many analysts believe this will make AMD a more formidable competitive threat to Nvidia. That anticipation has helped AMD stock more than double from its April low.
Improved financials
Additionally, although its financials are forward-looking, they point to improvements in the other concerns with AMD, namely the struggling embedded and gaming segments.
In the first quarter of 2025, embedded revenue dropped by only 3% year over year, compared to the 33% drop in 2024. Additionally, although gaming revenue still fell by 30% in Q1, it was a considerable improvement from the 58% decline in 2024.
With that, overall revenue in Q1 was $7.4 billion, a 36% yearly gain. In comparison, revenue increased by 14% in 2024, representing a dramatically improved performance. That enabled net income to improve considerably, as the $709 million profit in Q1 was far above the $123 million profit in the year-ago quarter.
Moreover, despite significant gains, the stock appears poised to continue rising in the second half of the year, and it is still more than 30% below its all-time high.
Furthermore, notwithstanding the 116 P/E ratio based on trailing earnings, its forward P/E ratio of 40 is arguably a bargain considering the massive revenue and profit gains of the last quarter. As investors anticipate the release of the MI400, it should bode well for AMD for the rest of 2025 and beyond.
AMD in the second half of 2025
Amid improving financial performance and technical gains in a key area, the second half of 2025 looks promising for AMD. To be sure, the stock has suffered as investors worry about its role in the AI accelerator industry, and indeed, segments such as its gaming and embedded segments suffered through a severe downturn.
Nonetheless, the chip industry is cyclical, and it appears the gaming and embedded segments have begun to recover. More importantly, the MI400 could make AMD a more significant force in the AI accelerator industry as it hopefully makes competitive strides in its battle with Nvidia.
Finally, while its P/E ratio makes the stock expensive, its much lower forward earnings multiple arguably makes AMD stock a bargain relative to the company's growth rate. Even if AMD does not achieve new all-time highs this year, investors have good reason to be bullish during the second half of 2025 as its prospects become much brighter.
