(RTTNews) - Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on Tuesday announced partnership to develop two next-generation supercomputers — Lux and Discovery — at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Together, the systems represent a $1 billion public-private investment aimed at advancing U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC).
The Lux AI system, developed by ORNL, AMD, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), will launch in 2026 as the first U.S. AI Factory supercomputer. Powered by AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs, EPYC CPUs, and Pensando networking, Lux will expand the DOE's AI capabilities and drive innovation in energy, medicine, materials, and advanced manufacturing.
Discovery, built by DOE, ORNL, HPE, and AMD, uses AMD EPYC "Venice" CPUs and Instinct MI430X GPUs, is designed for sovereign AI and scientific computing.

The OpenAI deal is another signal that demand for AI is accelerating. Alphabet's Google and others are also investing heavily to secure more data center capacity. As one of the top suppliers of chips for data centers, AMD is enjoying positive investor sentiment around these developments.
While the OpenAI deal puts AMD in a solid position for long-term growth in its data center business, the share price is significantly more expensive relative to the company's earnings than it was a few months ago. It is trading at 63 times 2025 earnings estimates, compared to about 40 before the news.
But this is the time of year when Wall Street starts looking ahead to next year's earnings estimates. AMD is expected to see an acceleration in earnings in 2026 from demand for its data center chips. Using 2026 consensus estimates brings the stock's forward (1-year) price-to-earnings multiple down to a more reasonable 40.

1. Advanced Micro Devices
Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) is right in the thick of growing demand for chips needed for artificial intelligence (AI). This isn't completely reflected in its earnings results yet, but recent developments are pointing to accelerating revenue in AMD's data center business next year that could send the stock to new highs.
Building on the recent deal to supply six gigawatts of chips for OpenAI starting next year, AMD is positioned to generate tens of billions of dollars in data center sales in the coming years. Its data center business grew 14% year over year in second-quarter 2025, hauling in $3.2 billion of revenue.
OpenAI will be using AMD's upcoming MI450 graphics processing units (GPUs) launching next year. This deal, along with sales contributions from AMD's new "Helios" AI rack powered by 72 MI450 GPUs, should make 2026 a breakout year for AMD.
2. Apple
Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) has been lagging behind its Magnificent Seven peers in the AI race. The iPhone maker has reported lackluster sales growth over the past year. Despite the lack of near-term catalysts in AI, Apple shares are sitting close to new all-time highs. This is sending investors a bullish signal about Apple's prospects.
While Apple Intelligence wasn't the AI splash that investors were hoping for, recent sales of the new iPhone 17 show that Apple still knows how to sell millions of devices. The new releases are driving higher sales than last year's iPhone 16, according to analysts, which has boosted the share price.
The strong sales of the iPhone 17 are a reminder that Apple didn't build its brand on cutting-edge technology, but on the experience of using its devices. Its competitive advantage is the seamless integration of hardware and software, and, importantly, Apple's privacy-focused features like Private Cloud Compute.
Apple stock is not cheap relative to its earnings, but it's got valuable advantages built around customer loyalty, a robust ecosystem of services, and brand power. Apple could surprise investors in AI, so I would rather be buying the stock now than later.

It's clear she believes that this is just the beginning of a long-term spending cycle in AI infrastructure that could fuel impressive growth for its business.
A $500 billion addressable market
The deal with OpenAI shows AMD is competitively positioned to benefit from the buildout of new data centers to support growing demand for AI services like ChatGPT. OpenAI already has over 700 million weekly users, and that figure will likely grow into the billions, considering how powerful these AI models are becoming.
The demand for the high-end chips needed to support the growth in AI infrastructure could be a $500 billion opportunity, based on AMD's previous estimate for its long-term addressable market. AMD has seen firsthand from its internal use the improvements AI can bring to coding and other tasks, and it has only been a few years since the AI wave started.
AMD's data center revenue reached $3.2 billion last quarter, representing growth of 14% from the year-ago quarter. Not only is it benefiting from GPU demand, but it also posted record sales of its EPYC central processing units (CPUs), thanks to high demand from cloud computing and enterprise customers.
Moreover, investors should expect AMD's data center business, which provided 42% of its total revenue last quarter, to grow at an accelerating rate over the next year. OpenAI's demand will obviously be a catalyst, but other leading tech companies, including some of the Magnificent Seven, also use AMD's chips.
AMD's earnings expected to soar
AMD will enjoy a fresh competitive advantage as the bulk of AI workloads shift from training to inferencing, in which developed models make predictions from new data. AMD designed its Instinct line of GPUs to offer performance leadership in AI inference. Its chiplet architecture will not only provide performance boosts for inference workloads, but importantly, will allow AMD to rake in huge profits.
As AMD's data center revenue picks up, analysts expect its earnings per share to grow at an annualized rate of 39% over the next several years. Even after the recent rise in the stock, it trades at just 37 times next year's estimated earnings. That is still reasonable relative to its underlying growth in earnings, which leaves the stock in a good position to deliver more gains over the next few years.

Motorola Solutions, Inc. MSI is scheduled to report third-quarter 2025 results on Oct. 30, after the closing bell. In the last reported quarter, the company delivered an earnings surprise of 6.2%. It pulled off a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of 6.8%, on average.
The Chicago, IL-based company is expected to have recorded year-over-year higher revenues on the back of growth in both segments — Products and Systems Integration and Services and Software. It benefits from the increasing demand for its mission-critical technologies in North America and globally.
Factors at Play
During the to-be-reported quarter, Motorola announced that its AI-powered video security and access control solutions were deployed in the University of Palermo. Designed to proactively detect potential threats, automatically alert security personnel and lock down physical access to classrooms and campus facilities, the solutions help to protect countless students, teachers and staff throughout the college’s campus. This is likely to have generated incremental revenues during the quarter.
In the quarter, Motorola launched Inform – an AI-assisted incident response solution across on-premise, cloud-based and other third-party security deployments. It helps security teams identify and respond to complex threats by intelligently grouping multiple, seemingly disparate events into a single, actionable incident, as security enterprises are placing strong emphasis on strengthening their overall security ecosystems. This is driving demand for advanced communication devices from Motorola, likely translating into higher revenues for the quarter.
During the quarter, Motorola announced that the São Paulo Subway has implemented its P25 land mobile radio (LMR) communication system to provide reliable coverage for a faster response to incidents, better operational coordination and increased safety for riders and staff. The company launched the WAVE PTX communication solution in the Dominican Republic and Peru. This broadband push-to-talk (PTT) subscription service allows business enterprises to instantly connect with different work teams for seamless operations. These are likely to be reflected in the upcoming quarterly results.
During the third quarter, Motorola collaborated with Nokia to develop a next-generation, containerized, tactical communications network solution for U.K. defense agencies. These systems drive the demand for additional device sales and promote software upgrades and infrastructure expansion. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the Products and Systems Integration segment’s revenues is pegged at $1.85 billion. The figure indicates a rise from $1.78 billion recorded in the year-ago quarter. Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) hasn't fared well in the artificial intelligence (AI) race so far. It has been beaten out by one of its rivals, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA). Nvidia has captured a huge chunk of the AI computing market, with AMD only being around as a much cheaper alternative. Almost nobody was using AMD's platform.
But all that changed with the OpenAI partnership announced a few weeks ago. This announcement gave AMD a huge vote of confidence from one of the leading generative AI players, and could have a massive effect on AMD's business. But is this enough to transform AMD into the next Nvidia in 2026?

AMD needs better software to match Nvidia's performance
One of the reasons why Nvidia established such a massive lead over AMD is its technology stack. While Nvidia makes graphics processing units (GPUs) that are arguably better than what AMD has offered to date, this will always be a point of contention. What isn't a point of contention is Nvidia's software, which allows GPUs to achieve better performance. Nvidia's CUDA software was one of the primary reasons for its success, and AMD will need to create something to rival it.
AMD's current alternative is ROCm, but it hasn't had nearly the same success as CUDA. However, OpenAI and AMD are partnering to improve this software, which could boost AMD's market position. AMD's products are known to be cheaper than Nvidia's, and if AMD can close the gap with operating software, it could be a viable alternative to Nvidia's products.
Time will tell how this partnership pans out, but if it works, AMD has a ton of business to steal from Nvidia.
AMD needs to win new business to fuel its growth
AMD and Nvidia are on two separate quarterly calendars, with AMD operating on the standard calendar and Nvidia operating one year ahead. Although this messes with some dates, the results reported are within one month of each other, so they're close enough for comparison purposes. In second-quarter its fiscal 2026 (ended July 27), Nvidia's data center business generated $41.1 billion in revenue, up 56% year over year. This trounced AMD's data center performance, which only saw 14% year-over-year growth to $3.2 billion.
AMD doesn't need to steal any of Nvidia's current AI business to be successful, either. Nvidia projects that global data center capital expenditures will reach $600 billion this year, but end up at $3 trillion to $4 trillion by 2030. That's a huge amount of growth still to come if Nvidia is right, and if AMD can win 20% of new business instead of the less than 10% it has recently won, it could easily outgrow Nvidia based on its smaller starting point.
This is a key part of the analysis of Nvidia vs. AMD. AMD doesn't necessarily need to be better than Nvidia. It just needs to be better than it has been in the past. If AMD can deliver strong growth thanks to its innovative technology stack, it could turn into one of the best-performing stocks in the market. The only problem is that AMD's stock has already baked in this growth.
AMD's stock is already anticipating big wins
During Nvidia's run starting in 2023, it has never traded for more than 50 times forward earnings. However, following the OpenAI partnership announcement, AMD is already valued at 60 times forward earnings and doesn't have any growth to show for it.
When real money starts getting spent and we see this affect AMD's finances, I'll convert into a believer in AMD's stock. It may be several quarters before we see this happen, although AMD could report some positive news when it announces third-quarter earnings on Nov. 4.
With how highly valued the stock is, I think investors are OK being patient and waiting to take a position until after Q3 results are reported. There's a lot of hype surrounding AMD's stock and what it could look like a few years from now. But until actual results are experienced, I'm not confident in proclaiming AMD the next Nvidia. Nvidia is still the leader in this race by far.

Could AMD Be the Nvidia of 2026?

U.S. stock markets closed at record highs on Friday following the release of cooler-than-expected inflation data. Soft inflation data boosted market participants’ expectations of another round of interest rate cut by the Fed this month. All three major stock indexes ended in positive territory. For the week as a whole, these three indexes finished in green too.
How Did the Benchmarks Perform?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) appreciated 1% or 472.51 points to close at 47,207.12, marking the index’s first closing in history above the technically crucial 47,000 barrier. Notably, 19 components of the 30-stock index ended in positive territory, while 11 finished in negative territory. At the intraday high, the blue-chip index touched a record 47,326.73.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite finished at 23,204.87, climbing 1.2% or 263.07 points driven by the strong performance of technology bigwigs. This marked a fresh record close for the index. At the intraday high, the tech-laden index touched a record 23,261.26.
The major gainer of the index was Advanced Micro Devices Inc. AMD. The stock price of the semiconductor behemoth jumped 7.6%. Advanced Micro Devices currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
The S&P 500 gained 0.7% to finish at 6,791.69, reflecting a new closing high for the benchmark. At the intraday high, the broad-market index touched a record 6,807.11. Out of the 11 broad sectors of the broad-market index, six ended in positive territory, while five were in negative territory.
The Financials Select Sector SPDR (XLF), the Utilities Select Sector SPDR (XLU) and the Technology Select Sector SPDR (XLK) rose 1.1%, 1.2% and 1.6%, respectively. On the other hand, the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) tumbled 1%.
The fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) fell 5.4% to 16.37. A total of 19.04 billion shares were traded on Friday, lower than the last 20-session average of 20.75 billion. Advancers outnumbered decliners on the NYSE by a 2.18-to-1 ratio. On Nasdaq, a 2.20-to-1 ratio favored advancing issues.
The S&P 500 recorded 34 new 52-week highs and four new 52-week lows. The Nasdaq Composite registered 124 new 52-week highs and 44 new 52-week lows.
Mild CPI Inflation for September
On Oct 24, the Department reported the consumer price index (CPI) data for September. The data was released late due to the ongoing U.S. government shutdown, which is currently the second largest in history.
The headline CPI for September increased 0.3% month over month, lower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 0.4%. The metric for August was also 0.4%. Year over year, the headline CPI increased 3% in September, higher than August’s metric of 2.9% but lower than the consensus mark of 3.1%. However, the reading for September was the highest since May and higher than the past 12-month average of 2.7%.
Core CPI (excluding volatile food and energy items) for September increased 0.2% month over month, lower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 0.3%. The metric for August was also 0.3%, marking the strongest monthly rise in six months. Year over year, core CPI increased 3% in September, below the consensus estimate of 3.1%. The reading for August was also 3.1%.
Following the benign inflation data, investors are expecting more cuts in interest rate this year. The CME FedWatch interest rate derivative tool currently shows a 98.9% probability that the Fed will reduce the Fed fund rate by 25 basis points in October and a 91.8% probability that the central bank will further reduce the rate by another 0.25% in December.
Other Economic Data
The University of Michigan reported that the final index for October consumer sentiment came in at 53.6 compared with 55.1 in September and October’s preliminary index of 55. The Zacks Consensus Estimate was 54.9. The current economic condition index for October was 58.6 compared with 60.4 in September. Consumer expectations in October came in at 50.3 compared with 51.7 in September. Also, 1-year short-term inflation expectation fell marginally to 4.6% in October from 4.7% in September. Long-term inflation expectation held steady at 3.7%.

Last week was strong for Wall Street. Concerns related to the U.S. government shutdown and the escalation of U.S.-China trade conflicts were sidelined by strong third-quarter earnings, soft inflation and the hope for more rate cuts. The Dow, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite moved up 2.2%, 1.9% and 2.3%, respectively.
