Stocks gave up an early advance on Friday and retreated, with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrials falling to 3.5-month lows. Stocks fell after crude oil prices recovered from early losses and rallied more than +3%, as the war in Iran shows no signs of abating. The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that the US is moving a Marine expeditionary unit to the Middle East as Iran steps up attacks on the Strait of Hormuz.

Stocks initially moved higher on Friday when WTI crude oil gave up overnight gains and fell more than -2% after the US granted a temporary waiver allowing buyers to take Russian oil cargoes already at sea. The US Treasury granted a month-long waiver to import Russian oil loaded before Thursday, covering Russian crude oil and fuel on about 30 tankers carrying at least 19 million barrels. Crude was also briefly pressured after the Financial Times reported that France and Italy had opened talks with Iran to negotiate a deal to guarantee the safe passage of their ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
Crude prices also found support on Friday after US officials said Iran has begun laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, an effort that could further complicate US efforts to restart shipping in the waterway. Despite the US destroying most large ships in the Iranian navy used to lay mines, Iran began using smaller boats for the operation on Thursday, according to a US official briefed on the intelligence. Goldman Sachs warns that crude prices could exceed the 2008 record high of close to $150 a barrel if flows through the Strait of Hormuz remain depressed through March.
The latest rhetoric from President Trump and Iranian leader Khamenei suggests there will be no immediate easing in the war that has disrupted energy shipments in the Middle East and spurred concerns about rising inflation. Global bond yields have soared this week on inflation fears, with the German 10-year bund yield rising to a 2.25-year high of 2.99% on Friday and the 10-year T--note yield climbing to a 1.25-month high at 4.29%.
Crude oil prices remain underpinned despite attempts to boost global supplies. The IEA on Wednesday released 400 million barrels from emergency oil stockpiles and said the war against Iran is disrupting 7.5% of global oil supply, and the conflict will cut global oil supply by 8 million bpd this month. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas flows, has choked off oil and gas flows due to Iran’s attacks on shipping in the waterway and forced Gulf producers to cut output because they can’t export from the region.
Friday’s US economic news was mixed for stocks. Jan personal spending, Jan JOLTS job openings, and the University of Michigan US Mar consumer sentiment index all rose more than expected. However, Jan capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts, a proxy for capital spending, were weaker than expected. Also, Q4 GDP was revised lower, and the Jan core PCE price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, rose by the most in 1.75 years.
US Jan personal spending rose +0.4% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.3% m/m. Jan personal income rose +0.4% m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.5% m/m.
The US Jan core PCE price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, rose +3.1% y/y, right on expectations and the highest in 1.75 years.
US Jan capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts were unchanged m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.5% m/m.
US Q4 GDP was revised downward to +0.7% (q/q annualized) from the previously reported +1.4% as Q4 personal consumption was revised lower to +2.0% from the previously reported +2.4%.
The University of Michigan US consumer sentiment index fell -1.1 to 55.5, stronger than the 54.8 expected.
The University of Michigan's US Mar 1-year inflation expectations were unchanged from Feb at 3.4%, below expectations of a rise to 3.7%. The Mar 5-10 year inflation expectations unexpectedly fell to 3.2% from 3.3% in Feb, weaker than expectations of an increase to 3.4%.
US Jan JOLTS job openings rose +396,000 to 6.946 million, stronger than expectations of 6.750 million.
Q4 earnings season is nearly over, with more than 98% of the S&P 500 companies having reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 74% of the 495 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 1% chance for a -25 bp FOMC rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets settled lower on Friday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.56%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.82%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.16%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Friday closed unchanged. The 10-year T-note yield rose +1.8 bp to 4.279%. June T-notes fell to a 1.25-month low on Friday, and the 10-year T-note yield climbed to a 5-week high of 4.289%. T-notes gave up an early advance on Friday after crude oil prices jumped more than +3%, which fueled inflation fears. Also, mixed US economic news limited gains in T-notes after Jan JOLTS job openings, and the University of Michigan Mar consumer sentiment index rose more than expected, hawkish factors for Fed policy. Conversely, Q4 GDP was revised lower, and Jan capital goods new orders rose less than expected, supportive factors for T-notes. Also, Friday’s stock weakness sparked some safe-haven demand for T-notes.
European government bond yields moved higher on Friday. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2.25-year high of 2.992% and finished up +2.6 bp to 2.983%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose to a 6.25-month high of 4.825% and finished up +4.9 bp to 4.823%.
UK Jan GDP was unchanged m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.2% m/m.
UK Jan manufacturing production rose +0.1% m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.2% m/m.
Swaps are discounting a 3% chance of a -25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
Meta Platforms (META) closed down more than -3% to lead the Magnificent Seven technology stocks lower after the New York Times reported that the company’s latest AI model has underperformed expectations and will be delayed. Also, Apple (AAPL) closed down more than -2%, and Microsoft (MSFT) and Nvidia (NVDA) closed down more than -1%. In addition, Tesla (TSLA) closed down -0.96%. Amazon.com (AMZN) closed down -0.89% and Alphabet (GOOGL) closed down -0.42%.
Chip stocks and AI-infrastructure companies moved higher on Friday, a supportive factor for the broader market. Sandisk (SNDK) closed up more than +6% to lead gainers in the S&P 500, and Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +4% to lead gainers in the Nasdaq 100. Also, Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +4%, and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed up more than +2%. In addition, Lam Research (LRCX), Applied Materials (AMAT), and Intel (INTC) closed up more than +1%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks moved higher on Friday as Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) rose more than +1% to a 1-week high. Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed up more than +8%, and MARA Holdings (MARA) closed up more than +6%. Also, Strategy (MSTR) and Coinbase Global (COIN) closed up more than +1%.
Mining stocks sold off on Friday as copper prices fell more than -2%, gold prices fell more than -1%, and silver prices dropped more than -4%. Anglogold Ashanti Ltd (AU) closed down more than -9%, and Coeur Mining (CDE) closed down more than -6%. Also, Southern Copper (SCCO) closed down more than -5%, and Newmont Mining (NEM), Hecla Mining (HL), Barrick Mining (B), and Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) closed down more than -4%.
Fertilizer stocks retreated on Friday, giving back some of this week’s sharp gains. Intrepid Potash (IPI) and Mosaic (MOS) closed down more than -6%, and CF Industries Holdings (CF) closed down more than -4%.
EverCommerce (EVCM) closed down more than -15% after forecasting Q1 revenue of $145.5 million to $148.5 million, well below the consensus of $151 million.
Ulta Beauty (ULTA) closed down more than -14% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after it forecast full-year comparable sales will increase 2.5% to 3.5%, below the consensus of 3.5%.
Adobe (ADBE) closed down more than -7% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after CEO Narayen said he will resign and remain in his post until a successor has been appointed.
Insulet (PODD) closed down more than -6% after it issued a voluntary recall of some Omnipod 5 Pods due to a manufacturing issue that led to 18 reports of serious adverse events.
ServiceTitan (TTAN) closed down more than -5% after reporting a Q4 EPS loss of -44 cents, wider than the consensus of -41 cents.
Klarna Group Plc (KLAR) closed up more than +9% after an SEC filing showed Chairman Morits purchased 3.47 million shares through an associated entity between March 3 and March 11.
Charles Schwab (SCHW) closed up more than +2% after it expects revenue growth of 16% in Q1 and said the company’s “diversified financial model continues to deliver.”
Carvana (CVNA) closed up more than +2% after its board approved a 5-for-1 split of its common stock.
Circle Internet Group (CRCL) closed up more than +1% after Mizuho Securities raised its price target on the stock to $120 from $100.

Iran War Drags Stocks Lower

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) fell 0.61% to 6,632.19, the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) dropped 0.93% to 22,105.36, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES:^DJI) slipped 0.26% to 46,558.47 as surging oil prices pressured equities.
Market movers
Energy and other defensive pockets outperformed while cyclicals lagged today. Ollie’s Bargain Outlet (NASDAQ:OLLI) gained following yesterday’s Q4 earnings. Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU) increased on positive commentary ahead of next week’s earnings.
AI delays weighed on Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) as investors reacted to reports that the roll out of its Avocado would be pushed to May. Adobe (NASDAQ:ADBE) fell by 7.58% to close at $249.32 after announcing CEO Shantanu Narayen would step down during yesterday’s earnings.
What this means for investors
The S&P 500 posted its a third consecutive week of losses. Crude oil prices approached $100 a barrel due to continued disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. High oil costs put pressure on banks, materials, and consumer cyclicals. As the conflict in Iran approaches its second week, investors are preparing for further upsets.
Rate cuts are unlikely to happen when the Federal Reserve meets next week. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics today showed job openings rose in January. Consumer spending rose slightly at the start of the year. However, data collected before the conflict began only gives part of the picture.
Figures released today show consumer sentiment hit a three-month low. This is an indication of mounting concern about increased energy and gasoline prices. For investors, a focus on long-term goals helps offset the backdrop of fear and volatility.

European government bond yields are mixed today. The 10-year German bund yield fell from a 2.25-year high of 2.992% and is down -0.4 bp to 2.953%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose to a 6.25-month high of 4.812% and is up +0.9 bp to 4.782%.

Stocks Erase Early Gains on Iran War Anxiety

(RTTNews) - Adobe Inc. (ADBE), the software and cloud services company, announced on Friday that it has finalized a settlement agreement with the United States Department of Justice to resolve litigation filed in June 2024. The case concerned Adobe's disclosure and subscription cancellation practices.
Under the settlement terms, Adobe agreed to provide $75 million worth of free services to eligible customers and make a separate $75 million payment to the Justice Department. The company stated it will contact affected customers after the court filings are completed and accepted.
While Adobe disagrees with the government's claims and denies any wrongdoing, the company welcomed the settlement as a resolution of the matter.
Adobe's subscription model is designed to offer flexible pricing, continuous product updates and cloud-based features, while maintaining transparent cancellation terms for its customers.
ADBE is currently trading at $251.79, down $17.99 or 6.67 percent on the Nasdaq.

Adobe Settles DOJ Case Over Subscription Practices

Adobe ADBE reported first-quarter fiscal 2026 non-GAAP earnings of $6.06 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3.06% and increasing 19.3% year over year.
Total revenues were $6.398 billion, which beat the consensus mark by 1.86% and increased 12% year over year on a reported and 11% on a constant-currency (cc) basis. Annualized recurring revenues (ARR) at the end of the first quarter of fiscal 2026 were $26.06 billion.
Adobe shares were down 8.15% at the time of writing this article. ADBE dropped 31.6% in the past year, underperforming the Zacks Computer and Technology sector’s return 31.9% and the Zacks Computer Software industry’s drop 1.7%.
ADBE’s Top Line in Detail
Subscription revenues were $6.198 billion (which accounted for 96.9% of the total revenues), up 13% on a year-over-year basis. Product revenues totaled $90 million (1.4% of the total revenues), down 5.3% year over year. Services and other revenues were $110 million (1.7% of the total revenues), down 19.1% year over year.
Customer Group subscription revenues were $6.17 billion, up 13% year over year and 12% at cc. Business Professionals and Consumers’ subscription revenues were $1.78 billion, which represents 16% year-over-year growth on a reported basis and 15% at cc. Creative and Marketing Professionals subscription revenues were $4.39 billion, up 12% year over year on a reported basis and 11% at cc.

ADBE Q1 Operating Details
Adobe reported first-quarter fiscal 2025 GAAP gross margin of 89.6%, which expanded 50 basis points (bps) on a year-over-year basis.
Operating expenses were $3.32 billion, up 13.2% year over year. As a percentage of total revenues, operating expenses increased 60 bps year over year to 51.8%.
The adjusted operating margin was 47.4%, which contracted 10 bps year over year.
ADBE’s Balance Sheet & Cash Flow
As of Feb. 27, 2026, the cash and short-term investment balance was $6.89 billion, up from $6.6 billion as of Nov. 28, 2025. Long-term debt, as of Feb. 27, was $5.38 billion compared with $6.2 billion as of Nov. 28.
Cash generated from operations was $2.96 billion in the reported quarter compared with $3.16 billion in the previous quarter.
Adobe Offers Positive Q2 and FY26 Guidance
For the second quarter of fiscal 2026, Adobe expects total revenues between $6.43 billion and $6.48 billion. Adobe expects Business Professionals and Consumers’ subscription revenue between $1.80 billion and $1.82 billion. Creative and Marketing Professionals subscription revenues are expected between $4.41 billion and $4.44 billion.
Non-GAAP operating margin is expected to be 44.5%. Adobe expects fiscal second-quarter non-GAAP earnings between $5.85 and $5.90 per share.
For fiscal 2026, Adobe still expects total revenues between $25.9 billion and $26.1 billion. Adobe expects Business Professionals and Consumers’ subscription revenues between $7.35 billion and $7.4 billion. Creative and Marketing Professionals subscription revenues are expected between $17.75 billion and $17.9 billion.
Non-GAAP operating margin is expected to be 45%. Adobe expects fiscal 2026 non-GAAP earnings between $23.30 and $23.50 per share.

Adobe Q1 Earnings Beat Estimates, Revenues Up Y/Y, Shares Fall

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is up +0.08%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is up +0.30%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is down -0.14%.
After initially opening higher, stocks are now mixed. WTI crude oil has rebounded off earlier lows and is up +0.33%. Oil and the Strait of Hormuz are in focus.

The US granted a temporary waiver allowing buyers to take Russian oil cargoes already at sea. The US Treasury granted a month-long waiver to import Russian oil loaded before Thursday, covering Russian crude oil and fuel on about 30 tankers carrying at least 19 million barrels. The Financial Times reported that France and Italy have opened talks with Iran to try to negotiate a deal to guarantee the safe passage of their ships through the Strait of Hormuz. US officials said Iran has begun laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz, an effort that could further complicate US efforts to restart shipping in the waterway. Despite the US destroying most large ships in the Iranian navy used to lay mines, Iran began using smaller boats for the operation on Thursday, according to a US official briefed on the intelligence. Goldman Sachs warns that crude prices could exceed the 2008 record high of close to $150 a barrel, should crude flows via the Strait of Hormuz remain depressed through March.
The latest rhetoric from President Trump and Iranian leader Khamenei suggests there will be no immediate easing in the war that has disrupted energy shipments in the Middle East and spurred concerns about rising inflation. Global bond yields have soared this week on inflation fears, with the German 10-year bund yield rising to a 2.25-year high of 2.99% today and the 10-year T--note yield climbing to a 5-week high at 4.28%.
Crude oil prices remain elevated despite attempts to boost global supplies. The IEA on Wednesday released 400 million barrels from emergency oil stockpiles and said the war against Iran is disrupting 7.5% of global oil supply, and the conflict will cut global oil supply by 8 million bpd this month. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas flows, has choked off oil and gas flows due to Iran’s attacks on shipping in the waterway and forced Gulf producers to cut output because they can’t export from the region.
Today’s US economic news is mixed for stocks. Jan personal spending rose more than expected, but Jan capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts, a proxy for capital spending, were weaker than expected. Also, Q4 GDP was revised lower, and the Jan core PCE price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, rose by the most in 1.75 years.
US Jan personal spending rose +0.4% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.3% m/m. Jan personal income rose +0.4% m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.5% m/m.
The US Jan core PCE price index, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, rose +3.1% y/y, right on expectations and the highest in 1.75 years.
US Jan capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts were unchanged m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.5% m/m.
US Q4 GDP was revised downward to +0.7% (q/q annualized) from the previously reported +1.4% as Q4 personal consumption was revised lower to +2.0% from the previously reported +2.4%.
Q4 earnings season is nearly over, with more than 98% of the S&P 500 companies having reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 74% of the 495 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a -25 bp FOMC rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets are mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +0.33%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.82%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.16%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) today are up by +7 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is down -1.6 bp to 4.245%. June T-notes are moving higher today, and the 10-year T-note yield fell from a 5-week high of 4.279%. Today’s 2% decline in WTI crude oil prices has lowered inflation expectations and is bullish for T-notes. Also, today’s US economic news, which showed Q4 GDP revised lower and Jan capital goods new orders climbing less than expected, was supportive of T-notes.
European government bond yields moved higher on Thursday. The 10-year German bund yield fell from a 2.25-year high of 2.992% and is down -1.0 bp to 2.947%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell from a 6.25-month high of 4.812% and is down -1.2 bp to 4.761%.
UK Jan GDP was unchanged m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.2% m/m.
UK Jan manufacturing production rose +0.1% m/m, weaker than expectations of +0.2% m/m.
Swaps are discounting a 3% chance of a -25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
Chip stocks and AI-infrastructure companies are moving higher today, a supportive factor for the broader market. Western Digital (WDC) is up more than +4%, and Micron Technology (MU) is up more than +3%. Also, Intel (INTC), Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX), Lam Research (LRCX), and Applied Materials (AMAT) are up more than +2%. In addition, ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), Microchip Technology (MCHP), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), Qualcomm (QCOM), and Texas Instruments (TXN) are up more than +1%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks are climbing today, with Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) up more than +3% at a 1-week high. Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) is up more than +6%, and MARA Holdings (MARA) and Riot Platforms (RIOT) are up more than +5%. Also, Strategy (MSTR) is up more than +4%, and Coinbase Global (COIN) is up more than +3%.
Fertilizer stocks are retreating today, giving back some of this week’s sharp gains. Intrepid Potash (IPI) is down more than -7%, CF Industries Holdings (CF) is down more than -5%, and Mosaic (MOS) is down more than -3%.
Klarna Group Plc (KLAR) is up more than +9% after an SEC filing showed Chairman Morits purchased 3.47 million shares through an associated entity between March 3 and March 11.
Circle Internet Group (CRCL) is up more than +4% after Mizuho Securities raised its price target on the stock to $120 from $100.
Karman Holdings (KRMN) is up more than +3% after Needham & Co issued a buy recommendation on the stock with a price target of $125.
Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings (KNX) is up more than +2% after Citigroup upgraded the stock to buy from neutral with a price target of $64.
Celanese (CE) is up more than +1% after Wells Fargo Securities upgraded the stock to overweight from equal weight with a price target of $70.
Air Products and Chemicals (APD) is up more than +1% after Wells Fargo Securities upgraded the stock to overweight from equal weight with a price target of $325.

Stocks Retreat From Initial Highs as Oil Prices Rebound

Shares of Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE) were heading lower on Friday after the design-software company known for its "Creative Cloud" posted solid results in its first-quarter earnings report.
However, the bigger news was that longtime CEO Shantanu Narayen was stepping down from the leadership position. In spite of beating estimates on the top and bottom lines and offering better-than-expected guidance for the second quarter, that news sent Adobe stock down more than 5% at the market open on Friday.

What the CEO transition means for Adobe
Though Adobe has clearly struggled of late as the company has faced competition from upstarts like Figma and, like other software companies, is being tested by potential disruption, Narayen has been a credit to the company.
Over the last 18 years, Adobe stock is up more than 600%, and Narayen successfully guided the company to its transition to a cloud-first business model. It's also made several acquisitions under his leadership, including, most recently, Semrush.
However, the timing of Narayen's departure seems odd. Adobe is in the midst of its drawdown since the dot-com bust. Investors are seriously questioning the company's longevity, as its growth has slowed, and new AI tools are coming on the market. In other words, the next CEO will have to navigate one of the biggest challenges in Adobe's history.
Narayen isn't leaving immediately. He said he would stay in the position until a successor is named and will remain as Chair of the Board. Often, a company like Adobe would plan for a CEO transition, having Narayen's replacement lined up, so the revelation that the company hasn't planned for succession may also be contributing to the sell-off.
Is Adobe a buy?
In its first quarter, Adobe's revenue rose 12% to $6.4 billion, topping the analyst consensus at $6.28 billion, and adjusted earnings per share of $6.06, up from $5.08 in the quarter a year ago, and ahead of estimates at $5.87.
Adobe has stepped up share buybacks and reduced its shares outstanding by 6% over the last year, taking advantage of the discount in the stock. At this point, the stock is more of a value play, trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of less than 12 based on adjusted earnings.
That's a dirt cheap price for a software company with Adobe's pedigree. While I think the stock deserves some skepticism due to the risk from AI disruption, its now modest growth rate, and Narayen's departure, at the current price, the reward outweighs the risk.

Is Adobe's CEO Transition a Red Flag or an Opportunity for Investors in 2026?

In early trading on Friday, shares of Western Digital topped the list of the day's best performing components of the Nasdaq 100 index, trading up 5.4%. Year to date, Western Digital registers a 59.8% gain.
And the worst performing Nasdaq 100 component thus far on the day is Adobe, trading down 5.6%. Adobe is lower by about 27.3% looking at the year to date performance.

Shares of creative software specialist Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE) have been crushed recently. The stock has plummeted to roughly $274 as of this writing as investors fret over rising artificial intelligence (AI) competition and -- now -- the abrupt news of a major leadership transition.
But while the market dumps the stock, Adobe's underlying business is actually picking up momentum and generating record fiscal first-quarter cash. With the stock trading at a severe discount to its historical norms, is this a rare opportunity to buy a high-quality software franchise on the cheap?

Revenue is accelerating
A closer look at Adobe's first-quarter results for fiscal 2026 shows a business defying the market's pessimistic narrative.
Total revenue for the quarter rose 12% year over year to a record $6.40 billion. Importantly, this marks a clear acceleration from the 10% top-line growth Adobe delivered in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025. And the company's total subscription revenue grew even faster in fiscal Q1 than its overall revenue -- at a rate of 13%.
And the company's growth is also highly profitable.
Adobe generated record fiscal first-quarter operating cash flow of $2.96 billion. Additionally, its non-generally accepted accounting principles (non-GAAP) earnings per share came in at $6.06 -- up from $5.08 in the year-ago quarter.
"As we accelerate AI-powered capabilities across creativity, productivity and customer experience orchestration, Adobe is well positioned for continued profitable growth," said Adobe chief financial officer Dan Durn in the company's earnings release.
Even more encouraging is how Adobe is proving that AI is a catalyst rather than a headwind. Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen noted that its AI-first annualized recurring revenue more than tripled year over year.
Navigating the CEO transition
Despite these strong numbers, the market remains fixated on uncertainty.
Specifically, the recent announcement that Narayen will step down after 18 years at the helm seems to be spooking some investors, judging by the stock's pullback in after-hours trading on Thursday. Wall Street hates uncertainty, and replacing a highly successful, long-tenured chief executive just as the company is entering a new AI-first era naturally introduces execution risk as the company searches for a successor.
But Adobe's board isn't sitting on its hands amid the stock's recent pullback. The company is using the sell-off to aggressively shrink its share count.
The company repurchased an incredible 8.1 million of its shares during fiscal Q1 -- up from 7.2 million in fiscal Q4.
A dirt cheap valuation
This brings us to the most compelling part of the bull case: the tech stock's price tag.
As of this writing, Adobe trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of about 15. For a company with Adobe's market dominance, massive cash generation, and accelerating top-line growth, a multiple like this is arguably dirt cheap. For context, Adobe has historically traded at a price-to-earnings ratio well above 30.
At its current valuation, the market is essentially pricing in a worst-case scenario. Investors are assuming that AI will permanently impair Adobe's pricing power and that the upcoming CEO transition will derail the company's operational focus -- and these pessimistic assumptions are occurring at a time that Adobe's business is accelerating, fueled by a tripling of AI-first annual recurring revenue.
Simply put, the business and stock are doing two very different things. The business is executing, and the cash generation remains immense, even as shares plummet. A valuation like this, even as Adobe continues to deliver steady, double-digit growth, is arguably leaving the stock trading at a discount.
So, is the stock a buy? I think so.
Yes, a CEO transition introduces some near-term noise, and the software landscape remains intensely competitive. But risks seem largely priced in.
With revenue growth accelerating, AI-driven products gaining traction, and management aggressively repurchasing shares at a discount, I believe the risk-reward setup here is skewed in favor of long-term investors.
