Verizon Communications Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in the provision of communications, technology, information, and entertainment products and services to consumers, businesses, and governmental entities worldwide. It operates in two segments, Verizon Consumer Group (Consumer) and Verizon Business Group (Business). The Consumer segment provides wireless services across the wireless networks in the United States under the Verizon and TracFone brands and through wholesale and other arrangements; and fixed wireless access (FWA) broadband through its wireless networks, as well as related equipment and devices, such as smartphones, tablets, smart watches, and other wireless-enabled connected devices. The segment also offers wireline services in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States, as well as Washington D.C. through its fiber-optic network, Verizon Fios product portfolio, and a copper-based network. The Business segment provides wireless and wireline communications services and products, including FWA broadband, data, video and conferencing, corporate networking, security and managed network, local and long-distance voice, and network access services to deliver various IoT services and products to businesses, government customers, and wireless and wireline carriers in the United States and internationally. The company was formerly known as Bell Atlantic Corporation and changed its name to Verizon Communications Inc. in June 2000. Verizon Communications Inc. was incorporated in 1983 and is headquartered in New York, New York.

Verizon looks like a mature telecom business with stable earnings, but with a notable debt burden and weak liquidity. Its P/E ratio of 11.39 is below the industry median, which supports the view that the stock is not too expensive on earnings, and its P/FCF is also slightly below the market, which is important for a capital-intensive company. At the same time, P/S and P/B are above industry medians, so the stock does not look cheap based on revenue or book value. The company’s profitability is strong: ROE, net margin, and operating margin are above the median, and operating margin remains at a high level, indicating a solid operating model. Earnings and revenue trends are generally stable, with no signs of a sharp deterioration, while EBITDA and operating income remain at comfortable absolute levels. On the other hand, debt/equity is significantly above the median, long-term debt continues to rise, and both the current ratio and quick ratio remain below 1, indicating limited short-term liquidity cushion. Cash on hand also does not provide strong protection relative to the scale of liabilities, so the balance sheet remains the main source of risk. Dividend yield in the latest data has dropped to zero, although it was positive historically, which reduces the stock’s appeal for income investors. ROA is below the median, and return on tangible equity is zero, which further limits the case for a higher valuation. Overall, the fundamentals support a moderately cautious view: the business is profitable and has strong margins, but the high debt burden and weak liquidity do not justify aggressively raising the target price. For an investor, this means that fair value should remain close to the current level, with a slight discount due to balance sheet risks and the lack of a strong dividend factor.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a group of 30 stocks in various categories that represent some of the largest and most important companies in the U.S. It doesn't change frequently, but it replaced Verizon with Google-parent Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL) in June.
That reflects shifting economic trends. Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft are already Dow components, and the index's heavyweights are mostly mature industry powerhouses. However, not all of them are performing well today, and not all of them are growth machines. Nike, for example, has been struggling lately, and Procter & Gamble generally reports single-digit sales increases.

Nvidia, Alphabet, and American Express (NYSE: AXP) have been unstoppable lately, and they're worth buying today.
1. Nvidia
Nvidia is the largest company in the world, and it's far from done. It sits at the epicenter of artificial intelligence (AI) development, and its products are critical for hyperscalers to run their large-language models (LLM). Although there are now many chip designers that can take care of some of the processes, none are as powerful or as in demand as Nvidia's.
On the company's fiscal 2027 second quarter (ended July 26)earnings call CFO Colette Kress updated investors that management expects revenue to increased 70% in fiscal 2028, and that's "a supply constrained outlook." The implication is that the demand is much higher, so high that Nvidia cannot address it.
The company continues to lead in its industry, launching new lines that can handle more compute capacity, such as the recently rolled out Vera Rubin platform, which combines central processing units (CPU) and graphics processing units (GPU) in a supercomputer that's 10 times more efficient at handling complex agentic AI tasks than the previous platform.
Despite its phenomenal performance, including more than doubling revenue year over year in the 2027 fiscal second quarter, Nvidia stock is trading at an attractive valuation of only 14 times forward, 1-year earnings.
2. Alphabet (Google)
Alphabet stock has plunged recently, since the market was disappointed in guidance for high capital expenditures over the next two years, but the company has been unstoppable. Revenue increased 24% year over year in the second quarter, with an 82% increase in Google Cloud, and it also can't meet demand.
The market sees free cash flow turning negative, but management assured investors that it's going to monetize the spend. "Our AI investments are redefining what's possible across every part of our business," CEO Sundar Pichai said.
There was outstanding growth across the AI platforms. Nine million developers are creating with Google's tools, and its models are processing 22 billion tokens per minute, up from 16 billion last quarter. It launched a creative tool called Omni in May, and by July, there was already a 40% increase in daily active users. Google must invest to be able to handle the increasing workloads.
And Alphabet is so much more than Google. It owns several leading businesses, including Android and YouTube.
Alphabet is also trading at a cheap price, just 22 times forward, 1-year earnings, and it's a great buy right now.
3. American Express
American Express is one of the oldest Dow stocks, having been added in 1982. The credit card network has a unique model targeting high-income consumers, making it more resilient under pressure. It charges an annual fee for most of its cards, and members participate in a highly regarded rewards program that makes it worthwhile for them.
American Express also stands out for its closed-loop system, which means that its own bank provides the credit for its cards, in contrast with Visa and Mastercard, which partner with issuing financial institutions. Its bank brings in lots of cash and net interest income, and the unified model creates a tight, efficient system with strong credit metrics and profitability.
American Express has been reporting healthy growth despite inflation, including a 10% year-over-year increase in revenue and a 14% increase in earnings per share (EPS). Cardmember spending increased 9%, the highest in three years, and management raised full-year revenue guidance. However, the company kept EPS guidance steady, and plans to use the extra money to invest for the future.
Like Alphabet, the market didn't like that too much, but it's a great signal for long-term growth, especially because the company has done this before successfully. However, it gives investors a chance to buy in at a lower price. American Express stock trades at only 15 times forward, 1-year earnings, and it's an excellent long-term value play.

3 Unstoppable Dow Stocks Worth Buying Right Now

S&P Global (NYSE: SPGI) announced that Nike (NYSE: NKE) will be removed from the S&P 100, effective Sept. 21, as part of its quarterly rebalancing. Honeywell Aerospace, Simon Property Group, and Colgate-Palmolive will also be removed, while Dell Technologies, Palo Alto Networks, Arista Networks, and Sandisk will be added.

Justifying Nike's S&P 100 removal
The S&P 100 isn't the 100 largest S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) components by market cap. Rather, it's a curated sector that represents blue chip companies across stock market sectors and industries with a focus on megacap and large-cap behemoths.
Nike has remained in the index due to its industry leadership, not its size. Nike is now the 213th-highest-weighted company in the S&P 500. It's also the lowest-ranked component in the iShares S&P 500 100 ETF -- which uses the S&P 100 as a benchmark.
Nike's removal makes sense given that its stock price continues to fall and its industry leadership isn't what it used to be. What's more, Dell, Palo Alto, Arista, and Sandisk have all gone up so much that they are all in the top 50 in S&P 500 components by market cap. Nike's industry leadership premium no longer justifies its inclusion in the S&P 100 over companies that are worth several times more and contributing to the S&P 500's gains, whereas Nike has been a drag on the index.
As you can see in the chart, Nike is at its lowest level in more than a decade, with revenue and earnings down in recent years and operating margins plummeting from the low- to mid-high teens pre-pandemic to under 9% today. There's a laundry list of issues at Nike, including supply chain and corporate strategy blunders, slowing growth in China, tariffs, domestic consumer spending pressures, and increased competition from formidable rivals.
Even with these issues, it's important to remember that investors care more about where a company could be headed than where it has been. Investors may take one glance at the stock's price action and assume Nike is a no-brainer buy. But Nike hasn't returned to growth, and its runway for doing so is shrouded in dense uncertainty.
As part of its Win Now turnaround plan, Nike has implemented cost cuts and changed its strategy to better balance wholesale and direct-to-consumer. For fiscal 2026, which ended on May 31, wholesale revenue grew 4% year over year, with double-digit growth in North America. But many of the challenges that weighed on the business remain -- namely, competition, current operating trends in consumer discretionary spending, and the China slowdown.
Better Dow candidates
With Alphabet replacing Verizon Communications in the Dow this past June, Nike is now the lowest-ranked component in the price-weighted index -- putting it on the hot seat for the next stock most likely to be replaced. With just 30 components, the Dow is more exclusive than the S&P 100, Nasdaq-100, or the S&P 500. The Dow has become increasingly tech-stock-focused in recent years to reflect the evolving economy -- adding Nvidia and Amazon in 2024, and now Alphabet this year. However, there are massive companies that could muscle their way into the Dow, such as Broadcom, Meta Platforms, Tesla, Space Exploration Technologies, or maybe even Tesla and SpaceX combined if they merge.
Although the Dow has traditionally included industry-leading dividend-paying companies, the dividend-paying aspect of the criteria seems to carry less weight today than in years past, as Alphabet and Nvidia both yield less than 0.5%, and Amazon doesn't even pay a dividend.
Nike has raised its dividend for 24 consecutive years and yields a sizable 4.3%. But that payout could be under pressure if Nike's dividend expense begins to absorb too much of its free cash flow.
Nike will be removed from the Dow
Nike could be a good buy for investors who are confident in its brands and management's ability to execute a successful turnaround. And if the broader stock market were selling off, perhaps Nike would be given more grace.
But the major indexes, including the S&P 500 and the Dow, are hovering around all-time highs -- shortening the leash for underperforming stocks like Nike, especially now that it is closer to the median S&P 500 component weight and makes up a mere 0.4% of the Dow.
At this point, I think it's only a matter of time before Nike is removed from the storied Dow Jones index. And most investors may be better off waiting for concrete signals of a sustained turnaround before buying the stock.

Nike Is Being Deleted From the S&P 100. Is Its Seat in the Dow Jones Industrial Average in Jeopardy?

Tobacco giant Altria Group is likely to be around -- and dishing out dividends -- for far longer than many investors might expect.
Verizon Communications may not be a high-growth opportunity, but it’s a fantastic opportunity to plug into reliable dividend growth.
Do you need more investment income than your portfolio is currently giving you? The recent rise in interest rates certainly puts bonds on more investors' radars. If you're going to need this income to at least have a shot at keeping up with inflation, however, dividend stocks arguably remain the smarter bet.
With that as the backdrop, here's a closer look at three high-yielding dividend stocks that could generate over $1,600 worth of annual dividend income with just $10,000 stakes in each one.

PepsiCo
It's been an unusually disappointing past three years for patient PepsiCo (NASDAQ: PEP) shareholders. The beverage company's stock is now down 30% from its mid-2023 peak and back within sight of the multiyear low made around the middle of last year.
Blame the economic backdrop, mostly. Inflation has not only worked against PepsiCo by raising its production costs but has forced shoppers into becoming more cost conscious as well. PepsiCo's product lineup has also lost some of its marketing mojo as consumers rekindle their interest in healthier snacking. It's all been taking a toll on the company's bottom line.
Or was, anyway. Last quarter's organic revenue growth of 2.4% doesn't seem like much, but it's quite a bit for a consumer staples name that had been struggling and is still in the midst of an overhaul that includes the recent debut of new products like a prebiotic cola and a protein-infused version of its popular Doritos brand of snack chips. The company expects comparable revenue growth for the remainder of the year to be outpaced by per-share earnings growth of between 4% and 6%. Again, for the industry, not bad.
The irony? Despite the stock's sizable pullback, neither the company nor the stock's dividend was ever -- and still isn't -- facing an existential crisis. The stock's 54-year streak of annual dividend increases isn't at any real risk of being broken anytime soon either. In fact, PepsiCo has earned the title of Dividend King thanks to this record of annual dividend increases for over 50 years. The 30% pullback from 2023's peak has merely pumped the ticker's forward-looking dividend yield up to a multidecade high of 4.3%, That spells opportunity for anyone who can see the bigger, longer-term picture.
Altria Group
There will come a time when the tobacco business finally collapses. That time is much further down the road than most smoking-cessation advocates might care to admit though. According to data from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about one out of every ten Americans still smokes, and that last 10% is proving to be a tough proverbial nut to crack. In the meantime (despite its own risks), vaping usage continues to rise, particularly among young adults.
The point is, there's still good money to be made within this sliver of the "vice" business, and there will be for a long while.
Enter Altria Group (NYSE: MO), although you may better know it by its brands like Philip Morris and Marlboro, or perhaps to a lesser extent, vaping brand NJOY or nicotine pouch maker Helix Innovations. While the company sold about 3% fewer cigarettes during the first half of 2026 than it did in the first half of 2025, net revenue continues to edge higher thanks to a combination of continued pricing power and sales of non-tobacco products. Arguably most important -- largely thanks to stock repurchases -- adjusted per-share profits improved by 2.8% in the second quarter of this year and are higher to the tune of 4.9% year to date. This of course supports continued payment of its dividends.
Again, there's no denying the end of Altria's business as we currently know it is coming. The company's "moving beyond smoking" slogan explicitly concedes as much.
Its underlying dividend behind the stock's forward-looking yield of 6.5% isn't in any immediate jeopardy, and the eventual wind-down of its current operation won't suddenly happen. Investors should be able to see well ahead of time when the business is reaching the tipping point of sustainability. Enjoy its sizable dividend payments until then.
Verizon Communications
Finally, add Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) to your list of dividend stocks to buy for good dividend income. At its forward-looking yield of 5.7%, a $10,000 position would produce $570 worth of annual dividend payments.
You know the company. Verizon is, of course, the country's biggest wireless telecom service provider. As of June, nearly 147 million mobile devices were connected to its network, plus a few hundred-thousand wireless broadband subscribers.
It's not a high-growth business by any stretch of the imagination. The U.S. mobile market is highly saturated and highly competitive. Any real revenue growth will come from population growth and price increases, neither of which is a major growth driver.
What Verizon lacks in raw growth firepower, however, it more than makes up for in reliable cash flow.
Think about it. Good or bad, most Americans have made their smartphones a centerpiece of their existence. A recent survey from Reviews.org reveals the average person living in the United States spends over four hours per day looking at their smartphone's screen, topping their total connected television view time of just under three hours. With the well-developed habit now firmly in place, it's not a question of whether consumers will continue paying to keep their mobile devices connected. It's just a question of which provider they'll choose. And Verizon is doing pretty well in that regard too, adding 184,00 (net) postpaid phone customers in Q2 of this year, accelerating Q1's count of 55,000 despite market saturation.
What this effectively means for Verizon shareholders is dependable, continued dividend growth, extending the company's current track record of 20 consecutive years of annual dividend increases.

However, elevated spending has overshadowed the company’s progress in satellite deployment and commercial partnerships. Unfavorable macroeconomic conditions, including rising inflation, higher interest rates, capital market volatility and geopolitical conflicts, have adversely impacted the company’s operations. These have led to continued fluctuations in satellite material prices, resulting in increased capital costs and pressure on the company’s financial performance. In addition, AST SpaceMobile faces severe competition from existing and new industry leaders like SpaceX’s Starlink and Globalstar, which are developing satellite communications technology using LEO constellations. To combat such competitive pressure, ASTS has to continuously customize its network offerings, enhance the cost-effectiveness of its products and services and boost the satellite data networks, which increases operating costs and reduces margins.
The Case for JBL
With a presence across 100 locations in 30 countries, Jabil is likely to gain from secular growth drivers with strong margins and cash flow dynamics. Moreover, its unmatched end-market experience, technical and design capabilities, manufacturing know-how, supply-chain insights and global product management expertise have put it in good stead.
Management’s focus on improving working capital management and integrating sophisticated AI and ML capabilities to enhance the efficiency of its internal processes is a major tailwind. Jabil’s top line is expected to benefit from strength in AI data center infrastructure, capital equipment and warehouse automation markets. The company is likely to gain from the rapid adoption of 5G wireless and cloud computing in the long run. It is benefiting from solid demand in key end markets, together with excellent operational execution and skillful management of supply-chain dynamics.
However, Jabil operates in a highly competitive environment, facing competition from both domestic and international electronic manufacturers, manufacturing service providers and designers like Sanmina Corporation SANM. Verizon Communications VZ and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. SPCX are two key players in the connectivity market. Verizon provides a vast array of communication and business solutions that include wireless, local exchange, long-distance, data/broadband and Internet, video, managed networking, wholesale and cloud-based services. It has extensive 4G LTE network coverage and a steadily expanding 5G infrastructure with Ultra Wideband deployment.
Operating a fleet of more than 11,000 broadband and mobile satellites, SpaceX's Starlink offers satellite Internet directly to consumers and business enterprises. The network serves more than 13 million Starlink subscribers across 160 countries and other markets. SpaceX reported a median residential download speed of 225 Mbps during peak hours.

However, the company operates in a highly competitive market, leading to intense price wars. Verizon has announced a three-year price lock guarantee for all its myPlan and myHome network plans. This ensures that the core monthly plan price for calling, data and texting will not change in the next three-year period, excluding taxes, fees and perks. Although the customer-first strategy is designed to woo new customers and retain existing ones, it is likely to contract margins. The company recorded high capital expenditures in order to support the launch and continued build-out of its 5G Ultra Wideband network, deployment of significant fiber assets across the country and an upgrade to Intelligent Edge Network architecture. It remains unclear if and when a reasonable return can be achieved from such investments.
The Case for SPCX
SpaceX has transformed the launch industry through its reusable Falcon 9 rockets, significantly reducing launch costs and increasing mission frequency. The company now conducts more launches annually than any of its global competitors, giving it a commanding share of the commercial launch market. In addition, Starlink provides recurring subscription income and potentially higher long-term margins. The business also benefits from a powerful competitive advantage. SpaceX can launch its own satellites at a fraction of the cost of its competitors, allowing Starlink to expand its network faster and more efficiently. As global demand for reliable broadband connectivity increases, Starlink's prospects become solid.
The Elon Musk-led company is aiming to evolve into a vertically integrated artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure company by combining advanced AI models, large-scale computing capabilities and satellite connectivity under one umbrella. The transformation is likely to unlock a significantly larger addressable market while diversifying the company's revenue base beyond launch services and Starlink. As part of the transition, xAI's flagship chatbot, Grok, has started operating under the SpaceXAI brand. The integration is expected to strengthen collaboration between the company's AI software, computing infrastructure and satellite network, creating a differentiated ecosystem that few competitors can match.
The company plans to deploy AI compute satellites as early as 2028, effectively creating space-based data centers capable of delivering large-scale computing capacity. This initiative leverages SpaceX's leadership in satellite deployment while addressing the growing demand for AI computing resources. Alongside its satellite ambitions, SpaceX continues to expand its Colossus data center platform, strengthening its position in AI infrastructure. SpaceX has also entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Anysphere in an all-stock deal valued at $60 billion. The buyout of a startup firm behind the rapidly growing AI coding assistant Cursor is primarily aimed at gaining a firmer footing in the enterprise AI market.
However, SpaceX is scaling several capital-intensive platforms simultaneously. The company is investing heavily in COLOSSUS, COLOSSUS II, Grok, enterprise offerings, compute services and future orbital AI compute. Management expects a multi-year investment cycle until sustained positive segment adjusted EBITDA is realized. The strategy may create a cost advantage if compute, energy and launch assets integrate as planned. Until then, AI adds uncertainty to margins, capital needs and consolidated earnings quality.

Verizon vs. SpaceX: Which Stock Has Better Growth Prospects?

(RTTNews) - Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ), a telecommunications company, said Thursday that it will begin accepting preorders for Apple's new iPhone 18 Pro lineup and other latest Apple products on September 12, with wide availability starting September 18.
Preorders will be available for the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5. The iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable iPhone, will be available for preorder starting October 16.
Verizon is also offering customers the option to switch to the carrier, get an iPhone 18 Pro without a trade-in and upgrade to the latest iPhone every year through its Simplicity Pro plan.
Verizon shares closed up 0.46% at $49.97 on Thursday.

A market crash or correction will happen one of these days. Here are some ETFs to consider, to brace against that. Each is focused on a "defensive" part of the economy -- on businesses that consumers will generally keep buying from, no matter how the economy is doing.
Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ETF
The Vanguard Health Care Index Fund ETF (NYSEMKT: VHT) is a prime example. In a recession, people will still need healthcare -- they will still buy their medications (to the degree that they're able to) and will still visit doctors. This fund recently held 417 stocks, with top holdings including Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson, and UnitedHealth Group. Its annual fee is just 0.09%, costing you $9 annually for every $10,000 you have invested in the fund, and its dividend yield was recently 1.5%.
State Street Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF
The State Street Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (NYSEMKT: XLU) also has a low annual fee -- just 0.08% -- and its dividend yield was recently 2.8%. It's focused on utility-related companies, such as NextEra Energy, Southern Co., and Duke Energy, and it recently held about 31 of them. When the economy flags, people and businesses will still need to keep the lights on.
Vanguard Consumer Staples Index Fund ETF Shares
The Vanguard Consumer Staples Index Fund ETF Shares (NYSEMKT: VDC) specializes in consumer staples companies, recently holding 103 of them, such as Walmart, Procter & Gamble, and Coca-Cola. Its annual fee is 0.09%, and its recent dividend yield 2.1%. Clearly, no matter whether the economy is up or down, gobs of people will want to keep buying shampoo, soda, and items from Walmart.
Schwab U.S. REIT ETF
The Schwab U.S. REIT ETF (NYSEMKT: SCHH) is another defensive ETF, in that it holds many real estate investment trusts (REITs) -- companies that buy properties and lease them out. These are typically multiyear leases, if not multidecade, so that income is likely to keep rolling to the REITS. The ETF's annual fee is just 0.07%, and its recent dividend yield 2.8%. Its recent 117 holdings included Prologis, American Tower, and Realty Income.
Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF
A solid dividend-focused ETF such as the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (NYSEMKT: SCHD) is also worth considering. (There are other good dividend ETFs, too, of course.) Why? Because dividend-paying companies tend to be established and profitable, with relatively dependable income. So they're more solid than the average stock. This ETF has an ultra-low annual fee of 0.06% and a recent dividend yield of 3%. Its top holdings (out of 98) recently included Merck, Chevron, and Verizon Communications.
Dividend income is particularly nice during recessions because while some stocks may be stagnating, healthy dividend payers will keep delivering cash to shareholders.

The Board of Directors at Verizon Communications declared a quarterly dividend of 70.75 cents per outstanding share, consistent with the prior quarter's dividend rate. "Verizon's reliability and consistency in returning capital to shareholders is a result of our focused operational execution and our ability to drive sustainable cash flow," said Dan Schulman, CEO of Verizon.
Argan announces that its Board of Directors declared a 40% increase in the quarterly cash dividend, raising it from $0.50 to $0.70 per common share. The dividend will be payable on October 30, 2026, to stockholders of record at the close of business on October 22, 2026.
Graham Holdings today declared a regular quarterly dividend of $1.88 per share, payable on November 5, 2026, to shareholders of record on October 15, 2026.
InterDigital, a wireless, video and AI technology research and development company, today announced that its Board of Directors has approved an increase in the company's quarterly cash dividend from $0.70 to $0.75 per share. The increase in the regular quarterly dividend will take effect beginning with the dividend paid in fourth quarter 2026. The Board of Directors also declared a regular quarterly cash dividend of $0.75 per share on its common stock, payable on October 28, 2026, to shareholders of record at the close of business on October 14, 2026.
Kenvue today announced that its Board of Directors declared a quarterly dividend of $0.21 per share on its common stock. The quarterly dividend is payable on October 2, 2026, to shareholders of record as of the close of business on September 21, 2026.
The board of directors of New Jersey Resources unanimously approved an increase in the quarterly dividend rate to $0.50 per share from $0.475 per share. The new quarterly rate will be effective with the dividend payable October 1, 2026, to shareowners of record on September 24, 2026. The new annual dividend rate will be $2.00 per share. NJR has paid quarterly dividends continuously since its inception in 1952, and has raised the dividend every year for the last 31 years.

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) closed down -0.48% on Wednesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.77%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down -0.29%. E-mini S&P futures (ESU26) fell -0.46%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU26) fell -0.30%.
Stock indexes retreated on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling to a 5-week low. The broader market was under pressure for a second day amid mounting inflation risks. WTI crude oil prices surged more than +3% today to a 3.25-month high amid escalating hostilities in the Middle East, heightening concerns about energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz. The surge in energy prices is boosting inflation expectations and pushing bond yields higher. The 10-year T-note yield rose to 4.85% on Wednesday, the highest in 2.75 years. The higher bond yields weighed on stocks.

On the positive side, chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks gained on Wednesday. Energy producers also rose on stronger crude oil prices.
The escalating trade war between the US and Canada is also weighing on market sentiment. On Tuesday, Canada imposed tariffs of 15% to 50% on hundreds of US goods in retaliation for the US action last month to impose 50% tariffs on $20 billion of imports from Canada. The US responded by moving to block imports of some Canadian products and slapping new tariffs on others, as well as seeking to bar Canadian companies from selling to US government contractors.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -2.7% in the week ended September 4, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -0.2% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index down -6.2%. The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose +6 bp to a 14-month high of 6.85% from 6.79% in the prior week.
Oct WTI crude oil prices (CLV26) surged more than +3% on Wednesday to a 3.25-month high due to the latest escalation of hostilities in the Middle East. The US destroyed five Iranian tankers carrying crude in response to two attempts by Iran to hit US Navy ships with ballistic missiles. Iran responded by firing missiles at a US air base in Jordan and warning ships in the Persian Gulf that they would be attacked. Iran also said on Wednesday that it is ready for a more intense war and will escalate counterstrikes if the US continues attacking its territory and infrastructure.
The markets are discounting a 61% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on September 15-16.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Wednesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 5-week low and closed down -1.58%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.28%. Japan's Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed down -0.19%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ6) closed down by -7.5 ticks on Wednesday. The 10-year T-note yield rose +4.5 bp to 4.833%. T-notes fell to a 20-month nearest-futures low on Wednesday, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 2.75-year high of 4.853%. T-notes are under pressure from higher crude oil prices, which are boosting inflation expectations, as WTI crude oil rose more than +3% on Wednesday to a 3.25-month high. T-notes added to their losses on Wednesday after the Treasury announced that it will buy back up to $6 billion in longer-dated US Treasuries, below expectations of at least $10 billion.
T-notes recovered from their worst level on Wednesday amid strong demand for the Treasury’s $39 billion auction of 10-year T-notes. The auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.71, well above the 10-auction average of 2.49.
European government bond yields moved higher on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield climbed to a new 15-year high of 3.444% and finished up +7.8 bp on that high. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +8.8 bp to 5.261%.
French July manufacturing production unexpectedly fell -0.8% m/m, weaker than expectations of a +0.4% m/m increase.
Markets are discounting a 100% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at Thursday’s policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
Telecommunication and cable providers moved lower on Wednesday, led by a -6% fall in Comcast (CMCSA), which led losers in the Nasdaq 100 after CFO Armstrong said he sees no improvement in Q3 broadband subscriber losses. Charter Communications (CHTR) also fell more than 8%, and Verizon Communications (VZ) and AT&T (T) closed down more than 1%.
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks moved higher on Wednesday, limiting losses in the overall market. Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +4%, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) closed up more than +3%. Also, Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +2%, and ARM Holdings (ARM), Western Digital (WDC), SanDisk (SNDK), Intel (INTC), Texas Instruments (TXN), and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed up more than +1%.
Energy producers and service providers rallied on Wednesday after WTI crude oil rose more than +3% to a 3.25-month high. APA Corp (APA) and ExxonMobil Holdings (XOM) closed up more than +2%. Also, Chevron (CVX), Devon Energy (DVN), Diamondback Energy (FANG), Occidental Petroleum (OXY), ConocoPhillips (COP), and Valero Energy (VLO) closed up more than +1%.
ServiceTitan (TTAN) closed down more than -29% after reporting a Q2 EPS loss of -26 cents, a bigger loss than the consensus of -25 cents.
Casy’s General Stores (CASY) closed down more than -14% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting a Q1 gross margin of 21.8%, below the consensus of 22.3%.
Chewy (CHWY) closed down more than -10% after forecasting a sequential decline in Q3 gross margin, due to a timing shift as certain rebate benefits shifted from the second half of the year into Q2.
Smithfield Foods (SFD) closed down more than -6% after cutting its Q3 earnings outlook, citing “continued compression in the industry fresh pork market spread and lower hog prices.”
Dyne Therapeutics (DYN) closed down more than -5% after JPMorgan Chase downgraded the stock to underweight from neutral with a price target of $10.
Booking Holdings (BKNG) closed down more than -3% after losing an EU court fight over its takeover of Sweden’s Etraveli Group, when a judge said regulators were right to conclude that the planned buyout threatened fair competition.
Chime Financial (CHYM) closed up more than +7% after boosting its full-year revenue forecast to $2.76 billion to $2.77 billion from a previous forecast of $2.73 billion to $2.75 billion, stronger than the consensus of $2.74 billion.
Meta Platforms (META) closed up more than +6% after analysts reported positive reviews of the company’s debut of Muse, an AI assistant.
HP Inc (HPQ) closed up more than +3% after announcing a pact with Red Hat on an AI platform.
Sysco (SYY) closed up more than +2% after raising its mid-term financial targets for fiscal years 2028 and 2029 to annualized net sales growth of 4% to 7%, up from a previous view of 4% to 6%.

Verizon + Corning: better together
Most of Corning's stock gains came on Tuesday, when Verizon announced it had struck a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar supply agreement to order more than 80 million miles' worth of fiber-optic cable from Corning for its network.
Precisely how many multi-billions of dollars we're talking about here isn't exactly clear. Still, the duration of the supply agreement -- 2027 through 2032 -- means that whatever the number is, you'll want to divide it by five or six to figure out the annual boost to Corning's revenue.
According to data from Discount-Low-Voltage.com, Corning fiber-optic cable is typically priced at about $1 per foot (although some other sources suggest a higher price). Taking $1 per foot as a benchmark, a supply contract for 80 million miles of fiber optics implies a total value of more than $420 billion.
What it means for Corning stock
Even divided by five or six years, that sounds like a lot of money for Corning -- potentially several times more than the company's current annual revenue stream of $20 billion.
While I'd much prefer to see a firm figure for the price Verizon is getting for so much cable before coming to a conclusion, the potential for this contract to become transformative for Corning seems clear.
Even at an apparently pricey valuation of 76.5 times trailing earnings, Corning stock might now be a buy.
