Valero Energy Corporation manufactures, markets, and sells petroleum-based and low-carbon liquid transportation fuels and petrochemical products in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Latin America, Mexico, Peru, and internationally. It operates through three segments: Refining, Renewable Diesel, and Ethanol. The company produces California Reformulated Gasoline Blendstock for Oxygenate Blending and Conventional Blendstock for Oxygenate Blending gasolines, CARB diesel, diesel, jet fuel, heating oil, and asphalt; feedstocks; aromatics; sulfur and residual fuel oil; intermediate oils; and sulfur, sweet, and sour crude oils. It sells its refined products through wholesale rack and bulk markets; and through outlets under the Valero, Beacon, Diamond Shamrock, Shamrock, Ultramar, and Texaco brands. The company owns and operates renewable diesel and ethanol plants, as well as produces renewable diesel and naphtha under the Diamond Green Diesel brand name. In addition, it offers ethanol and various co-products, including dry distiller grains, syrup, and inedible distillers corn oil to animal feed customers. The company was formerly known as Valero Refining and Marketing Company and changed its name to Valero Energy Corporation in August 1997. Valero Energy Corporation was founded in 1980 and is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.

However, Iran said its leaders still need to make a final decision on the proposed interim peace deal.

Stocks surged on Thursday after President Trump said he canceled planned military strikes against Iran, citing "discussions" with Iranian leadership. He added that a "time and place of the signing" of a negotiated end to the war would "be announced shortly," and the US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz "will remain in full force and effect until this transaction is finalized."
WTI crude oil prices (CLN26) are down more than -3% today on hopes for a near-term US-Iran agreement and a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
In positive news for stocks, the University of Michigan’s June US Consumer Sentiment Index rose +4.1 to 48.9, which was stronger than expectations for a rise to 46.0. Also, the University of Michigan’s June 1-year inflation expectations rate eased to +4.6% from +4.8% in May, and was weaker than expectations of +4.9%. The June 5-10 year inflation expectations rate eased to +3.4% from +3.9% in May, weaker than expectations of +3.8%.
The markets are discounting a zero percent chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
Overseas stock markets are higher today. The Euro Stoxx 50 is up +1.9%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.12%. Japan’s Nikkei-225 Stock Average closed up +2.81%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) today are down -3 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield is up +1.6 bp at 4.477%. T-notes are seeing weakness today as the 10-year inflation expectations rate is up +0.1 bp at 2.306%, despite today’s drop in oil prices. The T-note market remains worried about inflation pressures, which are likely to remain sticky even after the Strait of Hormuz reopens. The T-note market has some carry-over weakness from Thursday, when demand was lackluster for the Treasury’s 30-year bond auction.
European government bond yields are trading lower. The 10-year German bund yield is down -3.3 bp at 2.999%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is down -6.6 bp at 4.839%.
On Thursday, the ECB, as expected, raised the deposit facility rate by +25 bp to 2.25% from 2.00% and said, "The outlook remains uncertain, with upside risks for inflation and downside risks for economic growth." Swaps are discounting a 37% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on July 23.
US Stock Movers
Space Exploration Technologies Corp (SPCX), doing business as SpaceX, started trading today near $160 per share, up nearly +20% from Thursday’s IPO of $135. The IPO was more than four times oversubscribed, indicating strong demand for the stock. A strong showing by SpaceX today would be positive for investor sentiment and could help the upcoming IPOs for AI companies Anthropic and OpenAI.
Space-linked stocks are trading lower despite the favorable SpaceX debut, with EchoStar (SATS) down more than -9%, and Rocket Lab (RKLB) down more than -7%.
Chip stocks recovered from early losses and are trading mostly higher. The iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) is up +2.25% today, adding to Thursday’s sharp rally of +8.39%. Thursday’s rally was sparked by signs that AI spending is continuing after Oracle reported quarterly capital expenditures that were higher than expected, driven by increased data center spending. Chip leaders today include Arm Holdings (ARM)with a gain of more than +10%, and gains of more than +5% in Qualcomm (QCOM), AMD (AMD), and Intel (INTC).
Adobe (ADBE) is down more than -7% after CFO Dan Durn said he would leave the company on June 15, following news earlier this year that Adobe’s CEO would resign. The Adobe news put continued downward pressure on software stocks, which were undercut on Thursday by negative earnings news from Oracle (ORCL). Autodesk (ADSK) is down more than -3% and Intuit (INTU) is down by more than -2%.
Airline stocks are seeing continued support after oil prices today moved lower, adding to Thursday’s decline. United Airlines (UAL), American Airlines (AAL), and Southwest Airlines (LUV) are all up more than +3%.
Energy stocks and service providers are trading higher with today’s continued sell-off in crude oil prices. Occidental Petroleum (OXY), Valero (VLO), and Marathon Petroleum (MPC) are all up more than +2%.
Astera Labs (ALAB), CoreWeave (CRWV), Nebius Group (NBIS), Rocket Lab (RKLB), and Teradyn (TER) are seeing support today after Nasdaq announced on Thursday that those stocks will join the Nasdaq 100 Index, effective at the market open on June 22. Stocks leaving the Nasdaq 100 include Charter Communications (CHTR), Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTSH), Insmed (INSM), Verisk Analytics (VRSK), and Zscaler (ZS).
Travelers (TRV) is seeing downward pressure after Barclays cut its rating on the stock to underweight from equal-weight due to a downbeat outlook for profits in the property and casualty sector.

The Iran war shock is driving high crude oil prices, with West Texas Intermediate ("WTI") crude currently trading at more than $85 per barrel. The U.S. Energy Information Administration ("EIA") in its latest short-term energy outlook projected WTI at $88.32 per barrel this year, higher than $65.40 last year.

US MBA mortgage applications rose +10.8% in the week ended June 5, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +7.3% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index up +15.3%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose +3 bp to 6.60% from 6.57% in the prior week.
WTI crude oil prices (CLN26) soared more than +2% on Wednesday after the US and Iran exchanged strikes overnight. The US said it had completed an operation that saw fighter jets strike Iranian air defenses, ground control stations, and radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for Iran shooting down a US Apache helicopter. In response, Iran launched missiles at four US military targets and fired drones at the main US naval base in the Middle East, located in Bahrain, and struck Ali Al Salem air base in Kuwait. The increase in tensions risks derailing peace talks between Iran and the US, keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed, and further tightening global energy supplies.
The markets are discounting a 3% chance of a +25 bp rate hike at the next FOMC meeting on June 16-17.
Overseas stock markets settled lower on Wednesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 2.5-week low and closed down -0.66%. China's Shanghai Composite closed down -0.42%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average closed down -1.89%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU6) on Wednesday closed down -2.5 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield rose +2.3 bp to 4.540%. T-notes were under pressure on Wednesday after WTI crude oil prices surged more than +2%, which raised inflation expectations. Losses in T-notes were limited after the US May CPI report rose as expected, easing inflation concerns. Also, strong demand for the Treasury’s $39 billion auction of 10-year T-notes was positive for T-notes, as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.57, well above the 10-auction average of 2.47.
European government bond yields moved higher on Wednesday. The 10-year German Bund yield climbed to a 2.5-week high of 3.088% and finished up +3.4 bp to 3.076%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +2.8 bp to 4.931%.
Swaps are discounting a 99% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
Chipmakers and AI-infrastructure stocks moved lower on Wednesday and led the broader market lower. ON Semiconductor (ON) and Qualcomm (QCOM) closed down more than -6%, and Marvell Technology (MRVL), ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), and Western Digital (WDC) closed down more than -5%. Also, Broadcom (AVGO), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Micron Technology (MU) closed down more than -4%, and NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), Microchip Technology (MCHP), and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) closed down more than -3%.
Most of the Magnificent Seven technology stocks settled lower on Wednesday, weighing on the overall market. Nvidia (NVDA) and Tesla (TSLA) closed down more than -3%, and Alphabet (GOOGL), Amazon.com (AMZN), and Meta Platforms (META) closed down more than -2%. Also, Microsoft (MSFT) closed down more than -1%. However, Apple (AAPL) bucked the trend, closing up 0.35%.
Airline stocks and cruise line operators sold off on Wednesday as WTI crude oil rose more than 2%, boosting fuel costs and dampening the companies’ profitability prospects. Alaska Air Group (ALK) closed down more than -7%, and United Airlines Holdings (UAL), Carnival (CCL), and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) closed down more than -6%. Also, Delta Air Lines (DAL) and Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) closed down more than -5%, and American Airlines Group (AAL) and Southwest Airlines (LUV) closed down more than -4%.
Trucking companies were under pressure on Wednesday after Amazon expanded its LTL freight offering to all destinations in the US, including third-party warehouses, distribution centers, and retail partners. FedEx Freight Holding Co (FDXF) closed down more than -6%, and Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL) and XPO Inc (XPO) closed down more than -5%. Also, ArcBest (ARCB) closed down more than -4%, and Saia Inc (SAIA) and CH Robinson Worldwide (CHRW) closed down more than -3%. In addition, JB Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) closed down more than -2%.

Stocks Fall on Weakness in Tech and Trucking Companies

The Iran war shock is driving high crude oil prices, with West Texas Intermediate (“WTI”) crude currently trading at more than $85 per barrel. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (“EIA”) in its latest short-term energy outlook projected WTI at $88.32 per barrel this year, higher than $65.40 last year.
Thus, with oil prices likely to remain elevated, refiners could see pressure on their overall business. However, that does not appear to be the case. Notably, over the past six months, leading refiners such as Valero Energy Corporation VLO and Marathon Petroleum Corp. MPC have each witnessed more than 35% gains despite a highly favorable crude pricing environment. Let’s delve deeper.

Constrained Global Refining Capacity
The global refining capacity is constrained, and fuel inventories are low. On the demand side, gasoline, diesel and jet fuel remain resilient. This means people are still driving and flying quite often, while diesel demand suggests transportation, freight, agriculture and industrial activity are still holding up. As a result, with busy refineries and fuel not in abundant supply, refining margins for refiners are quite strong.
Thus, surprisingly, with crude prices likely to remain high, investors shouldn’t allocate their money only to exploration and production companies but also to refining players like Valero Energyand Marathon Petroleum, even though high crude prices have been increasing refiners’ input costs.
Time to Bet on 2 Refiners: VLO, MPC
Valero Energy expects to generate strong refining margins as the world has very little spare refining capacity, while inventories of refined products such as gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel are low. VLO will likely benefit from strong demand and tight supply, given its large, complex refineries with the capacity to process discounted heavy sour crude oil.
Over the past six months, Valero Energy, sporting a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), jumped 47.6%, outpacing the energy sector’s 22.2% gain.
Marathon Petroleum runs refining systems that are the largest in the United States. With high utilization of refineries, Marathon Petroleum is well-positioned to capture almost all of the available profitable opportunities. In its first-quarter earnings transcript, the leading refining player mentioned that roughly 6% of the world’s ability to produce finished fuels went offline due to the conflicts in the Middle East.
Investors should note that the company has the capability of processing cheaper crude from the United States and Canada to produce diesel and jet fuels that are in high demand. 2 Refining Stocks With 35%+ Upside in 6 Months Despite High Oil Prices

Marathon Petroleum Corporation MPC shares have surged in recent months and remain near their 52-week high, currently trading at $258.15 after a modest pullback from their 52-week high of $272.46 achieved earlier this month, making the stock one of the strongest performers in the energy sector.

In Marathon Petroleum’s case, rising refining margins, growing midstream earnings and a shareholder-friendly capital-allocation strategy continue to support the investment case.

MPC's Integrated Business Model Remains a Strength
Marathon Petroleum operates one of the largest refining systems in the United States, with approximately 3 million barrels per day of refining capacity. In addition to its refining operations, the company owns a significant stake in MPLX LP MPLX, one of North America’s largest midstream operators.
This integrated structure provides multiple sources of earnings. While refining profits can fluctuate with market conditions, MPLX generates stable fee-based cash flows that help reduce earnings volatility and strengthen the company’s financial profile.
The benefits of this model were evident in the first quarter of 2026. MPC generated adjusted EBITDA of $2.8 billion. The Refining & Marketing (R&M) segment contributed $1.4 billion, nearly triple the year-ago level, supported by stronger refining margins and efficient operations. Meanwhile, MPLX LP continued to provide stable cash-flow support through its diversified midstream asset base.

The refining environment has improved considerably over the past year. Global supply disruptions, geopolitical uncertainty and resilient fuel demand have supported stronger crack spreads and higher refining margins.
These favorable conditions were reflected in MPC’s first-quarter results. R&M’s adjusted EBITDA rose to $1.4 billion from $489 million in the year-earlier period. The segmental margin increased to $17.74 per barrel from $13.38.
These results came despite the company completing roughly 40% of its planned annual turnaround activity during the quarter. Marathon Petroleum maintained an 89% crude utilization rate while delivering strong operational performance.
Management also highlighted healthy demand trends across gasoline, diesel and jet fuel markets. With its large refining footprint and integrated logistics network, Marathon Petroleum appears well-positioned to benefit from favorable market conditions through the remainder of 2026.
Growth Projects Support Future Earnings
Although the company remains disciplined with capital spending, it continues to invest in projects that offer attractive returns.
Marathon Petroleum recently completed its Garyville jet fuel project and is advancing additional projects at its El Paso and Robinson facilities. These investments are expected to improve product flexibility, enhance margins and better align production with market demand.
At the same time, MPLX continues to expand its natural gas and NGL infrastructure, particularly in the Permian Basin. These projects should support long-term cash-flow growth and increase distributions flowing back to Marathon Petroleum.
Together, refining optimization initiatives and midstream expansion projects provide a clear path for earnings growth.
Shareholder Returns Remain Major Attraction
One of the strongest aspects of the MPC investment story is its commitment to returning capital to shareholders.
In the first quarter, the company returned approximately $1 billion through dividends and share repurchases. Management also approved an additional $5-billion share-repurchase authorization, demonstrating confidence in the company’s outlook.
The growing cash distributions received from MPLX further strengthen Marathon Petroleum’s ability to maintain and expand shareholder returns. Management expects MPLX’s growth strategy to support double-digit annual distribution growth to MPC over the next two years, creating another source of value for investors.
Valuation Still Looks Reasonable
Despite trading near its 52-week high, Marathon Petroleum trades at a forward P/E of 9.05X, below the Oil-Energy sector average of 11.41X and between peer valuations, trading above Valero Energy VLO but below PBF Energy PBF, underscoring its attractive valuation relative to its earnings potential.

Unlike many momentum-driven stocks, MPC’s recent gains have been supported by improving fundamentals, rising earnings expectations and favorable industry conditions. Its exposure to both refining and midstream operations also helps reduce risks compared with many pure-play refining peers.
Analysts have become increasingly optimistic about the company’s outlook. Over the past 60 days, the consensus estimate for 2026 earnings has risen from $21.49 per share to $30.05, while the 2027 estimate has increased from $20.36 to $26.55.

Market sentiment remains favorable as well. MPC has an average brokerage rating of 1.87 on a 1-to-5 scale, where 1 represents Strong Buy. Of the 19 analysts covering the stock, nine rate it as a Strong Buy and three rate it as a Buy. Similar to Valero Energy and PBF Energy, Marathon Petroleum is benefiting from a favorable refining environment, but its integrated business model provides an additional source of earnings stability through MPLX.
