Vale S.A., together with its subsidiaries, produces and sells iron ore and iron ore pellets for use as raw materials in steelmaking in Brazil and internationally. The company operates through Iron Solutions and Energy Transition Materials segments. The Iron Solutions segment produces and extracts iron ore and pellets, manganese, and other ferrous products; and provides related logistic services. The Energy Transition Materials segment produces and extracts nickel used to produce stainless steel, electric vehicles, and metal alloys; and its by-products, such as gold, silver, cobalt, precious metals, platinum, and others, as well as copper used in the construction sector to produce pipes and electrical wires. The company was formerly known as Companhia Vale do Rio Doce and changed its name to Vale S.A. in May 2009. Vale S.A. was founded in 1942 and is headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

VALE looks like a large and profitable raw materials producer, but not cheap in terms of business quality: revenue and gross profit remain high, and gross margin stays above the industry median. At the same time, operating margin is also above the median, which suggests a decent ability to monetize volumes and control costs. However, net margin is noticeably weaker than the industry and has deteriorated compared with the stronger quarters of last year, so earnings quality looks less durable than would be desirable for a premium valuation. Return on capital and assets remains significantly below the industry median, and ROE, ROA, ROI, and return on tangible equity all point to weak capital efficiency. This is an important negative for valuation, because with only moderate returns on capital, the market is usually not willing to pay elevated multiples for long. The multiples picture is mixed: P/E is above the industry median, which suggests limited rerating room, while P/B, P/S, and P/FCF are below the median and look like a partial offset to weak profitability. Debt burden is moderate, but debt/equity is above the industry level, and current and quick ratios are below the median, which adds caution to the balance sheet. Dividend yield is present, but it does not look high enough to fully offset weak capital efficiency and liquidity. Equity and cash positions remain significant, which supports financial resilience and reduces tail-risk concerns. Overall, the fundamentals do not look weak, but they also do not justify an aggressive upward revision in valuation: strong margins and business scale are balanced by low profitability, a higher P/E, and less-than-ideal liquidity. Therefore, a moderately conservative downward adjustment is appropriate, reflecting earnings and capital quality rather than survival or balance-sheet problems.

Vale (NYSE:VALE), a global iron ore, nickel, and copper miner, closed at $14.15, up 2.83%. The stock jumped following Brazil's presidential election and reported market preference for Flávio Bolsonaro. Investors will also be watching for Vale's late-October results.
Trading volume reached 95.4 million shares, coming in about 249% above its three-month average of 27.4 million shares. Vale IPO'd in 2002 and has grown 530% since going public.

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) closed at 7,774, up 0.67%, and the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) closed at 27,477, up 1.05%. Among diversified metals and mining peers, BHP Group (NYSE:BHP) closed at $86.83, up 0.88%, and Rio Tinto Group (NYSE:RIO) closed at $95.65, up 1.53%, as investors also monitor iron ore and copper pricing.
What this means for investors
Brazilian stocks soared to record levels following a surprise first-round presidential election result. Conservative candidate Flávio Bolsonaro surprisingly took the lead in the first round of the presidential election, and investors feel that could benefit Vale and others with business interests in the country.
Along with gains in Congress that could further support Bolsonaro's policies should he win the runoff election later this month, investors see a fiscal and regulatory environment that would help miners like Vale.
Earlier this year, Vale raised its 2026 copper and nickel guidance, and investors will hear updated commentary when the company next releases performance data on Oct. 29.
