IWV, MCD, BA, UNP: Large Outflows Detected at ETF

In the latest look at the underlying components of the S&P 500 ordered by largest market capitalization, Arista Networks Inc (Symbol: ANET) has taken over the #70 spot from Union Pacific Corp (Symbol: UNP), according to The Online Investor.
Market capitalization is an important data point for investors to keep an eye on, for various reasons. The most basic reason is that it gives a true comparison of the value attributed by the stock market to a given company's stock. Many beginning investors look at one stock trading at $10 and another trading at $20 and mistakenly think the latter company is worth twice as much — that of course is a completely meaningless comparison without knowing how many shares of each company exist. But comparing market capitalization (factoring in those share counts) creates a true "apples-to-apples" comparison of the value of two stocks. In the case of Arista Networks Inc (Symbol: ANET), the market cap is now $195.52 billion, versus Union Pacific Corp (Symbol: UNP) at $158.52 billion.

Another reason market capitalization is important is where it places a company in terms of its size tier in relation to peers — much like the way a mid-size sedan is typically compared to other mid-size sedans (and not SUV's). This can have a direct impact on which mutual funds and ETFs are willing to own the stock. For instance, a mutual fund that is focused solely on Large Cap stocks may for example only be interested in those companies sized $10 billion or larger. Another illustrative example is the S&P MidCap index which essentially takes the S&P 500 index and "tosses out" the biggest 100 companies so as to focus solely on the 400 smaller "up-and-comers" (which in the right environment can outperform their larger rivals). Arista Networks Moves Up In Market Cap Rank, Passing Union Pacific

(RTTNews) - The U.S. Surface Transportation Board on Thursday said it has paused the merger review process, including the environmental review, for the proposed Union Pacific Corp. (UNP) and Norfolk Southern Corp. merger while accepting the companies' revised application for consideration.
The regulator has ordered the railroads to provide additional information by July 27, 2026.
"The Board finds that there are several aspects of the revised application that are unclear or underdeveloped and require supplementation at this stage of the proceeding so that the Board may have the information necessary to thoroughly evaluate—and the public has an adequate opportunity to comment on—whether the transaction is in the public interest," STB said in a release.
The Board requested additional information on several issues, including competitive impacts, access for shippers, public benefits, service assurance plans, market share projections, downstream merger effects, passenger rail operations and car supply issues.
The Board also denied a request by the applicants to waive restrictions on ex parte communications, saying such a waiver at this stage could complicate the record-building process.
In addition, the Board confirmed that an Environmental Impact Statement will be prepared for the proposed merger in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The agency said it plans to hold at least 12 in-person public meetings and several virtual meetings as part of the environmental review process.

STB Puts On Hold Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern Merger Review

In trading on Thursday, cigarettes & tobacco shares were relative laggards, down on the day by about 2.5%. Helping drag down the group were shares of Ispire Technology, off about 6.2% and shares of Universal off about 5.5% on the day.
Also lagging the market Thursday are railroads shares, down on the day by about 1.5% as a group, led down by Norfolk Southern, trading lower by about 4.8% and Union Pacific, trading lower by about 4%.

Class I railroads Union Pacific (NYSE: UNP) and CSX (NASDAQ: CSX) are two prominent companies that transport bulk goods and commodities across the continent on tens of thousands of miles of track.
Railroads are classic industrial stocks, but still a fantastic business to invest in today. The incumbent railroad companies dominate North America, and, combined with regulatory hurdles, make it almost impossible for new entrants to enter the fray. That drives pricing power and strong investment returns. Union Pacific has returned 308% over the past decade, slightly outpacing the S&P 500 index's 326%. Meanwhile, CSX has been a home run, returning over 519%.

But which is the better railroad to own in 2026? There's a ton to like about Union Pacific, but much of that depends on a blockbuster acquisition. That's why CSX remains the better railroad stock in 2026. Here is what you need to know.
CSX's operational improvement is the 2026 headline
CSX operates approximately 20,000 miles of rail and provides rail and intermodal transport services throughout the eastern and southeastern United States and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. CSX appointed Steve Angel as CEO in September 2025. He was the former CEO of Linde, an industrial gases giant where operational efficiency is paramount to success. That influence has shown up pretty quickly. CSX's operating margin rose by 560 basis points year over year in the first quarter of 2026, driven largely by a 6% reduction in operating expenses.
The company also recently completed its project at the Howard Street Tunnel in Baltimore, which will boost intermodal volumes. Intermodal volumes rose 6% in the first quarter. The market has rewarded the stock with a forward P/E ratio of 24. It's not a very low valuation, certainly not a bargain. That said, it seems fair given analysts' expectation of approximately 10% annualized earnings growth over the next three to five years. It makes CSX a safe, steady investment.
Union Pacific's pending merger could transform the company
Union Pacific is larger, with about 32,000 miles of railroad track, but operates in the western and central United States, touching parts of Mexico. It's the only railroad with access to all six gateways between the two countries. It's a major advantage, given the significant manufacturing and trade flows between these nations. However, the big story with Union Pacific right now is its pending $85 billion merger with Norfolk Southern, which both parties agreed to last summer.
The merger is currently in regulatory review. Regulators could approve, reject, or impose conditions on the merger, such as requiring asset sales. If approved as is, the merger would create a behemoth in the industry. Its railroad would span over 50,000 miles through 43 states, linking roughly 100 ports across North America. The companies expect a decision on the merger sometime in 2027.
Blockbuster acquisitions come with an assortment of risks
Even if regulators approve the merger as is, there are several risks that investors should consider with Union Pacific.
The merger is an enormous deal. Union Pacific's market cap is about $157 billion, so this deal dramatically increases the company's size. Such large mergers almost always raise questions about how well the pieces fit together. A rocky post-merger transition could hurt operating efficiency or margins. There will likely be cost savings as Union Pacific cuts redundant expenses, but identifying, cutting, and realizing those savings can take several years.
On top of that, analysts currently see Union Pacific growing earnings by an average of 7% to 8% annually over the next three to five years, and Norfolk Southern growing earnings by an average of 4% to 5% over the same time period. Yet, Union Pacific trades at a forward P/E ratio of about 21 times 2026 earnings estimates. In other words, investors could be better off paying a slightly higher valuation for CSX, a more stable company with a stronger earnings growth outlook.
Union Pacific could look completely different once this merger saga plays out. Until then, you're buying Union Pacific for its merger story and long-term potential, not its current fundamentals. That makes CSX the better railroad stock to buy in 2026.

Let's take a closer look at two promising transportation stocks that are worth buying this year: Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY) and Canadian National Railway (NYSE: CNI). The former is a good fit for speculative investors, while the latter is a dependable blue chip play.
The speculative play: Joby Aviation
Joby Aviation develops electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Its S4 eVTOL can carry one pilot and four passengers, travel up to 150 miles on a single charge, and reach a maximum speed of 200 miles per hour. Unlike many of its competitors, which use separate propellers for takeoff and cruising, the S4 uses a single propeller for both modes -- reducing its weight and enabling it to travel faster and farther.
Joby is still awaiting the FAA's approval to launch its first commercial flights, but it's already backed by major companies such as Toyota, Delta Air Lines, and Uber. Toyota provides Joby with the engineering and manufacturing support to scale its business. Delta will bundle Joby's short-range flights into its premium tickets for "home to airport" services, and Uber will integrate those flights into its new Uber Air platform. It's also producing autonomous eVTOLs for the Department of Defense.
Once Joby's first commercial flights take off, analysts expect its revenue to soar from $53 million in 2025 to $458 million in 2028. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global eVTOL market could grow at a 36.8% CAGR from 2026 to 2034 as those electric aircraft replace conventional helicopters for short-range flights.
Joby is still unprofitable, and its stock isn't cheap at 25 times its 2028 sales. But if it successfully ramps up its production over the next few years, it could become one of the market's hottest next-gen transportation stocks.
The conservative play: Canadian National Railway
Canadian National Railway operates approximately 20,000 miles of railroad across the U.S. and Canada, and connects the Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf of Mexico coasts. That T-shaped network supports seamless cross-border shipping without transfers to other carriers. It's diversified across a wide range of sectors -- including bulk commodities, shipping containers, industrial and energy products, and automotive products -- so it isn't dependent on a single industry.
That scale and diversification make it one of the market's most reliable transportation stocks. From 2025 to 2028, analysts expect its EPS to grow at an 8% CAGR. It still looks reasonably valued at 21 times this year's earnings, and it pays a forward dividend yield of 2.3%.
Canadian National Railway faces three near-term challenges: the unresolved tariff negotiations between the U.S. and Canada, which could impact cross-border trade; higher oil prices and catch-up costs from a previous labor dispute, which are driving up its operating costs; and the proposed merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern, which would create a major competitor and America's first true transcontinental railroad.
Nevertheless, Canada's ongoing exports of oil products, grain, and fertilizer should offset a lot of that near-term pressure. Its recent completion of a major investment cycle (to expand its Chicago EJ&E bypass) should also reduce some of the pressure on its margins and earnings. So if you're looking for a conservative, dividend-paying logistics play that will bounce back from the next market crash, Canadian National Railway checks all the right boxes.
