Union Pacific Corporation, through its subsidiary, Union Pacific Railroad Company, operates in the railroad business in the United States. The company offers transportation services for grain and grain products, fertilizers, food and refrigerated products, and coal and renewables to grain processors, animal feeders, ethanol producers, renewable biofuel producers, and other agricultural users; and construction products, industrial chemicals, plastics, forest products, specialized products, metals and ores, petroleum, liquid petroleum gases, soda ash, and sand, as well as finished automobiles, automotive parts, and merchandise in intermodal containers. Union Pacific Corporation was founded in 1862 and is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska.

Union Pacific looks like a high-quality but already expensive railroad asset: operating profitability and return on capital remain very strong, but the market valuation already largely reflects this. A P/E of 24.08 is slightly below the industry median, but P/S of 7.04, P/B of 8.94, and P/FCF of 30.50 are noticeably above industry benchmarks, which limits the potential for further re-rating. At the same time, the overall trend in the multiples does not provide a convincing signal that the stock is becoming cheaper: P/E and P/B fluctuate, while P/FCF and P/S remain elevated, meaning the market is paying a premium for stability and quality. The company’s key strength is its consistently high margins: a gross margin of about 59.5%, an operating margin of around 40.2%, and a net margin of about 29.2% look outstanding for the industrial sector. ROE of 40.38%, ROA of 10.43%, and ROI of 15.02% confirm that the business uses capital and assets efficiently. Revenue, EBITDA, operating profit, and net income generally remain at high levels and show no signs of structural deterioration, which supports the base valuation. The balance sheet is not perfect, however: a quick ratio of 0.73 and a current ratio of 0.92 are below 1 and worse than industry benchmarks, while a debt/equity ratio of 1.53 and a significant amount of long-term debt indicate a noticeable debt burden. Positively, debt has been gradually declining over the years and equity has been growing, meaning financial stability is improving, albeit without a sharp jump. Dividend yield of 0.52% remains low and has declined over the year, so the dividend factor cannot materially support a re-rating of the stock. Overall, the fundamentals confirm the quality and resilience of the business more than they justify a significant increase in the target price. For investors, this means UNP deserves a premium to the sector because of its margins and return on capital, but the high absolute valuation and weak balance sheet liquidity call for caution. Therefore, the base forecast looks somewhat overstated and calls for a moderate reduction rather than a sharp revaluation.

Solid Q2 performance
Union Pacific's operating revenue climbed 12% year over year to $6.9 billion in the second quarter. Excluding fuel surcharges, the railroad giant's freight revenue rose 4%, driven by volume gains and price increases.
Union Pacific's efficiency initiatives are also producing positive results. Trains are moving more quickly through its rail network. Freight car velocity increased 5% to 231 daily miles per car, while average terminal dwell decreased 7% to 19.7 hours. Fuel consumption rate also improved by 1% to 1.051 gallons per thousand gross ton-miles.
Still, higher fuel costs negatively impacted the company's operating ratio -- operating expenses as a percentage of revenue -- which came in at 59.7% compared to 59% in the year-ago quarter.
All told, Union Pacific's adjusted net income jumped 12% to $2 billion. Its adjusted earnings per share, aided by stock buybacks, increased 13% to $3.41.
Raised outlook
Union Pacific now expects high-single-digit earnings-per-share growth in 2026, up from a prior forecast of mid-single-digit growth.
During a conference call with analysts, CEO Jim Vena said the primarily Western U.S.-based rail network is progressing through the regulatory process for its proposed merger with Eastern U.S.-based Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC).
Vena believes the combination will lead to greater competition among freight transport providers, better overall service, and a stronger national supply chain.
"Now, versus almost one year ago when we first announced our plans to merge, we have even more conviction that our transaction is in the public interest and will deliver benefits for our stakeholders, especially our customers," Vena said. "The case for our transcontinental railroad is clear, and we're ready to go."

Union Pacific Corporation UNP reported impressive second-quarter 2026 results, wherein both the earnings and revenues beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate.
Quarterly earnings (excluding 5 cents from non-recurring items) of $3.41 per share beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 2.8% and increased 8.5% on a year-over-year basis.
Operating revenues of $6.86 billion beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $6.65 billion and rose 11.5% on a year-over-year basis, driven by core pricing gains, volume growth and higher fuel surcharge revenues, partially offset by business mix. Revenue carloads declined 1% year over year.
Union Pacific Corporation Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise
Freight revenues (accounting for 95% of the top line) increased 12% year over year to $6.52 billion. Other revenues increased 11% year over year to $346 million in the second quarter of 2026.
Operating income increased 9% year over year to $2.76 billion. Total operating expenses of $4.10 billion inched up 13% year over year. Fuel expenses rose 63% year over year. Expenses on purchased services and materials increased 10% on a year-over-year basis, while expenses on compensation and benefits decreased 1% year over year.
The operating ratio (operating expenses as a percentage of revenues) in the second quarter of 2026, on an adjusted basis, improved 110 basis points year over year to 59.2%.
UNP’s Segmental Highlights
Bulk (Grain & grain products, Fertilizer, Food & refrigerated, Coal & renewables) freight revenues were $2.04 billion, which increased 7% on a year-over-year basis. Segmental revenue carloads decreased 1% year over year to $514 million.
Industrial freight revenues totaled $2.39 billion, up 8% year over year. Segmental revenue carloads increased 3% year over year to $586 million.
Freight revenues in the premium division were $2.08 billion, up 21% year over year. Premium revenue carloads increased 4% year over year to $1.06 billion.
UNP’s Liquidity
Union Pacific exited the second quarter of 2026 with cash and cash equivalents of $1.16 billion compared with $1.27 billion at the quarter's end of 2026. Debt (due after a year) of $29.04 billion was down 4.14% compared with the December-quarter end of 2026 actuals.
UNP’s 2026 Outlook
For 2026, earnings per share are expected to register high-single digit growth, consistent with attaining the three-year CAGR target of high-single digit to low-double digit growth through 2027.
UNP further anticipates operating ratio improvement. Capital expenditure is expected to be approximately $3.3 billion. UNP aims to continue generating strong cash while increasing annual dividend payouts.

Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies WAB, operating as Wabtec Corporation, reported encouraging second-quarter 2026 results wherein both earnings and revenues surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate and increased year over year.
Quarterly adjusted earnings of $2.76 per share beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.63 by 4.9% and increased 21.6% year over year, owing to higher sales and operating margin expansion.
Revenues climbed 17.5% to $3.18 billion and surpassed the consensus mark of $3.08 billion by 3.2%.
United Airlines Holdings, Inc. UAL reported second-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $1.99 per share, down 48.6% year over year but above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.92 by 3.7%.
Operating revenues rose 16% to $17.67 billion and were essentially in line with the $17.68-billion consensus mark. A 12.1% increase in total revenue per available seat mile or TRASM, and broad-based gains across premium, loyalty and cargo revenues supported the top line despite sharply higher fuel costs.
J.B. Hunt Transport Services, Inc. JBHT reported second-quarter 2026 earnings of $1.91 per share, up 45.8% from $1.31 a year ago. The figure beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.71 by 11.7%.
Operating revenues climbed 19.4% year over year to $3.50 billion and surpassed the consensus mark of $3.19 billion by 9.5%. Higher volumes and pricing across several businesses supported growth, led by a 10% increase in Intermodal loads.

Union Pacific Q2 26 Earnings Conference Call At 8:45 AM ET

(RTTNews) - Union Pacific Corp.(UNP) and Canadian National Railway Co. (CNR.TO, CNI) on Wednesday announced a binding memorandum of understanding as a framework for CN to secure competitive access in connection with Union Pacific's proposed acquisition of Norfolk Southern (NSC).
The agreement is subject to approval by the Surface Transportation Board and completion of the merger.
The company said the agreement preserves customer options, resolves terminal railroad ownership issues, expands CN's presence in the Midwest, and maintains gateway protections for customers and railroads.
Under the agreement, CN will gain competitive access to certain shipper facilities where Class I railroad options would be reduced, subject to commercial and operational feasibility.
The agreement also gives CN overhead rights between Tuscola, Illinois, and East St. Louis, Illinois, and customer service rights between St. Louis and Kansas City.
CN will also gain access to Union Pacific's Neff Yard in Kansas City, marking its first operational presence in the city's core.
In addition, CN will acquire Norfolk Southern's ownership interests in the Kansas City Terminal Railway Company and the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis.
As part of the agreement, CN will not oppose the proposed Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern merger, and both companies will work together during the Surface Transportation Board review process to implement the agreement.
Union Pacific Corp closed trading 0.19% lesser at $292.56 on the New York Stock Exchange. In the after-hours trading, the stock traded 1.52% higher at $297.
