The Analog segment offers power products to manage power requirements across various voltage levels, including battery-management solutions, DC/DC switching regulators, AC/DC and isolated controllers and converters, power switches, linear regulators, voltage references, and lighting products. This segment provides signal chain products that sense, condition, and measure signals to allow information to be transferred or converted for further processing and control, including amplifiers, data converters, interface products, motor drives, clocks, and logic and sensing products. The Embedded Processing segment offers microcontrollers that are used in electronic equipment; digital signal processors for mathematical computations; and applications processors for specific computing activity. This segment offers products for use in various markets, such as industrial, automotive, personal electronics, communications equipment, enterprise systems, and calculators and other. It provides DLP products primarily for use in project high-definition images; calculators; and application-specific integrated circuits. The company markets and sells its semiconductor products through direct sales and distributors, as well as through its website. Texas Instruments Incorporated was founded in 1930 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas.

NXP Semiconductors NV and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc are up more than +14% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings results. The markets are awaiting earnings from four of the Magnificent Seven technology stocks after the close today, as Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms will report quarterly results.
Today’s US housing starts and core capital goods new orders reports were better than expected, a supportive factor for stocks.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -1.6% in the week ended April 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +1.2% and the refinancing sub-index down -4.4%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose by +2 bp to 6.37% from 6.35% in the prior week.
US Mar housing starts unexpectedly rose +10.8% m/m to a 15-month high of 1.502 million, stronger than expectations of a decline to 1.380 million. Mar building permits, a proxy for future construction, fell -10.8% m/m to a 7-month low of 1.372 million, weaker than expectations of 1.390 million.
US Mar capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts, a proxy for capital spending, rose +3.3% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.5% m/m and the largest increase in 5.75 years.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) are up by more than +5% today as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis, as flows of crude, natural gas, and oil products from the Persian Gulf have been cut off since the war began in late February. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
The 2-day FOMC meeting concludes this afternoon, and the Fed kept monetary policy unchanged as expected, despite a record number of dissenting votes. The markets will look to Fed Chair Powell's post-meeting comments for guidance on the future direction of Fed policy. Today’s FOMC meeting is the last for Mr. Powell as Fed Chair, as his term expires on May 15.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment today and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the conclusion of today’s policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of today, 80% of the 199 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 3-week low and is down -0.33%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.71%. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average did not trade, as markets in Japan were closed for the Showa Day holiday.

Stocks Mixed Ahead of FOMC Meeting Results

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) today is down -0.19%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) is down -0.57%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) is up +0.20%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) are down -0.15%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) are up +0.21%.
Stock indexes are mixed today. Soaring crude oil prices are lifting inflation expectations and bond yields and are negative for stocks. WTI crude oil climbed to a 2-week high today after the US signaled it will maintain its naval blockade of Iran for the foreseeable future. The Wall Street Journal reported that President Trump told his aides to prepare for an extended blockade and that it carries less of a risk for the US than resuming hostilities or walking away from the conflict without securing a deal that curbs Iran’s nuclear activities. The 10-year T-note yield is up +5 bp to a 4-week high of 4.40%.

The Nasdaq 100 is higher today as technology stocks climb on signs that demand for AI infrastructure remains strong. NXP Semiconductors NV and Seagate Technology Holdings Plc are up more than +10% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after reporting stronger-than-expected earnings results. The markets are awaiting earnings from four of the Magnificent Seven technology stocks after the close today, as Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms will report quarterly results.
Today’s US housing starts and core capital goods new orders reports were better than expected, a supportive factor for stocks.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -1.6% in the week ended April 24, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +1.2% and the refinancing sub-index down -4.4%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose by +2 bp to 6.37% from 6.35% in the prior week.
US Mar housing starts unexpectedly rose +10.8% m/m to a 15-month high of 1.502 million, stronger than expectations of a decline to 1.380 million. Mar building permits, a proxy for future construction, fell -10.8% m/m to a 7-month low of 1.372 million, weaker than expectations of 1.390 million.
US Mar capital goods new orders nondefense ex-aircraft and parts, a proxy for capital spending, rose +3.3% m/m, stronger than expectations of +0.5% m/m and the largest increase in 5.75 years.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) are up by more than +4% today as the US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis, as flows of crude, natural gas, and oil products from the Persian Gulf have been cut off since the war began in late February. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
The 2-day FOMC meeting concludes this afternoon, and the Fed is expected to keep monetary policy unchanged. The markets will look to Fed Chair Powell's post-meeting comments for guidance on the future direction of Fed policy. Today’s FOMC meeting is the last for Mr. Powell as Fed Chair, as his term expires on May 15.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment today and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the Tue-Wed policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of today, 80% of the 199 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets are mixed today. The Euro Stoxx 50 fell to a 3-week low and is down -0.12%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.71%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 did not trade with markets closed in Japan for the Showa Day holiday.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) today are down -10 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +3.8 bp to 4.384%. Jun T-notes fell to a 4-week low, and the 10-year T-note yield rose to a 4-week high of 4.400%. T-notes are under pressure today amid rising crude oil prices, with WTI up more than +4% to a 2-week high, boosting inflation expectations. T-notes extended their losses, and US Mar housing starts and Mar core capital goods new orders rose more than expected, a hawkish factor for Fed policy.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield rose to a 2-week high of 3.093% and is up +2.0 bp to 3.087%. The 10-year UK gilt yield climbed to a 1-month high of 5.031% and is up +2.2 bp to 5.028%.
Eurozone Apr economic confidence fell -3.2 to a nearly 5.5-year low of 93.0, weaker than expectations of 95.1.
Eurozone Mar M3 money supply rose +3.2% y/y, stronger than expectations of +3.1% y/y.
Swaps are discounting an 11% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) is up more than +23% to lead chipmakers and AI infrastructure stocks higher after forecasting Q2 revenue of $3.35 billion to $3.55 billion, stronger than the consensus of $3.27 billion. Seagate Technology Holdings Plc (STX) is up +16% after forecasting Q4 adjusted EPS of $4.80 to $5.20, well above the consensus of $3.96. Also, Western Digital (WDC) is up more than +12%, and Sandisk (SNDK) is up more than +9%. In addition, Micron Technology (MU), Intel (INTC), and Microchip Technology (MCHP) are up more than +4%, and Marvell Technology (MRVL), Analog Devices (ADI), Qualcomm (QCOM), and Texas Instruments (TXN) are up more than +1%.
Airlines and cruise line operators are under pressure today with WTI crude oil up more than +3% at a 2-week high. United Airlines Holdings (UAL), Alaska Air Group (ALK), Carnival (CCL), and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) are down more than -2%. Also, American Airlines Group (AAL), Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL), Delta Air Lines (DAL), and Southwest Airlines (LUV) are down more than -1%.
Bloom Energy (BE) is up more than +27% after boosting its full-year revenue forecast to $3.4 billion to $3.8 billion from a prior forecast of $3.1 billion to $3.3 billion, above the consensus of $3.25 billion.
Rush Street Interactive (RSI) is up more than +14% after forecasting full-year revenue between $1.49 billion and $1.54 billion, better than the consensus of $1.38 billion.
Generac Holdings (GNRC) is up more than +11% after reporting Q1 net sales of $1.06 billion, better than the consensus of $1.05 billion.
Visa (V) is up more than +9% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after reporting Q2 net revenue of $11.23 billion, stronger than the consensus of $10.74 billion.
Starbucks (SBUX) is up more than +6% after reporting Q2 comparable sales were up +6.20%, well above the consensus of +3.65%, and raised its full-year comparable sales forecast to at least +5% from a prior view of at least +3%.
Fair Isaac Corp (FICO) is up more than +4% after reporting Q2 revenue of $691.7 million, well above the consensus of $638.4 million.
Teradyne (TER) is down more than -13% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting Q2 revenue of $1.15 billion to $1.25 billion, failing to exceed the consensus of $1.20 billion meaningfully.
GE Healthcare (GEHC) is down more than -11% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after cutting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $4.80 to $5.00 from a previous forecast of $4.95 to $5.15, weaker than the consensus of $5.06.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) is down more than -10% after reporting Q1 net revenue of $1.07 billion, below the consensus of $1.14 billion.
Brown-Forman (BF.B) is down more than -9% after JPMorgan Chase downgraded the stock to underweight from neutral with a price target of $23.

Stocks Pressured as Soaring Crude Prices Raise Inflation Concerns

I was in heaven. One baseball toss away was a man of surreal size, Aaron Judge.
The New York Yankee slugger. All six-foot-seven standing in a minor league ballpark right here in Sacramento's Sutter Health Park.
My family and I sat second row, right behind the dugout. I'd waited until just four hours before first pitch to buy the tickets. (A contrarian purchasing strategy that usually works because most buyers don't have the stomach for it. Here once again it paid off with reasonably priced dugout seats to watch the Yanks at a fraction of the price we'd have paid in the Bronx.)
Our Last-Minute Seats (Not Bad!)
Then my kids turned to me. "Daddy, this is boring."
Well, of course it's boring, kids. It's baseball!
My kids are football and basketball watchers. The swing-and-a-miss rhythm of modern baseball was not fun for them. Fair enough, it's what baseball has become over the last twenty or thirty years. The hitting instructors have optimized the sport into a simple framework: swing for the fences, hit it over everyone.
And if you strike out? Eh. Cost of doing business. The analytics say it works. But it's admittedly a grind to watch.
Wall Street "research" works the same way. Our analyst friends tend to swing and miss too! The difference? Their batting averages aren't tracked.
They whiff on one stock call, shrug, and move on to the next recommendation. They don't get demoted or sent down to the minors. Their batting averages are bad and these clowns never get called out. Which is good news for contrarians like us.
Here's how we capitalize on their incompetence.
A widely cited academic study on analyst target price accuracy found that only about 54% of 12-month price targets correctly predicted even the direction of the subsequent price move.
Fifty-four percent. On direction alone. That's barely better than a coin flip!
Analysts give specific price targets to stocks like they are scripture. In reality, they don't even know if the thing is going to move up or down!
And it gets uglier. A 2024 Yale School of Management study found that analysts systematically delay downgrading stocks after bad news -- to curry favor with the companies they cover. The suits aren't just bad at predicting stock moves. They're deliberately stalling their warnings to protect their banking relationships.
Put those two facts together and the picture is clear. Wall Street "research" is a farce. Which is exactly why it works so well as a contrarian indicator!
When Wall Street's collective price target sits below the stock's current price, that's not a signal to sell. That's a signal that full pessimism is baked in! All it takes is one decent earnings report and the stock gaps higher while the research machine scrambles to reload.
Which is exactly how my Dividend Swing Trader subscribers banked 24% returns in two weeks on Texas Instruments (TXN).
Heading into last Wednesday's earnings report, the Wall Street research on Texas Instruments was about as bearish as it gets. The analyst consensus price target was below the stock's current trading price--meaning the suits, as a group, thought TXN was already overvalued. Barclays had the stock at Underweight. The bears were all aligned.
The tariff story drove the bear case. TXN manufactures globally--with fabs in China and Japan--and the herd priced in worst-case trade scenarios.
What they missed: TXN is reshoring aggressively. The company committed to invest $60 billion in new US fab capacity. It secured $1.6 billion in direct CHIPS Act funding plus $6 to $8 billion in investment tax credits. The Sherman, Texas fab already produces chips. The Lehi, Utah facility comes online this year.
The CHIPS Act literally pays TXN to bring manufacturing home. Every tariff headline that scared the suits actually accelerated TXN's competitive position.
On cue, last Wednesday, TXN reported. Revenue rose 19% year-over-year. Earnings beat consensus by 24%. Management guided next-quarter revenue 8% higher than the quarter they just blew out. CEO Haviv Ilan even flagged the possibility of price increases in the back half of 2026.
And then the "research machine" swung into action. Ha! What a joke. Overnight, the same Barclays analyst who had TXN at Underweight two days earlier hiked his price target by $75. BofA slapped a Buy rating on it with a $320 target. Rosenblatt went to $330, KeyBanc to $325.
The vanilla boys were chasing the move, late to the party, as always.
Longtime readers know this playbook, because we ran it on TXN before. Back in June 2017, I recommended TXN to my Hidden Yields subscribers at $79.70. We held the position for four and a half years. We collected nearly $15 per share in dividends along the way. And in January 2022, we sold at $175.72 for a 148% total return--22% annualized. From a "boring" chipmaker!
Most investors would have moved on after a trade like that. Not us. We watched. We waited. And when the herd panicked on tariffs and pulled TXN back into our buy zone, we stepped up to the plate again.
Same framework. Find the dividend-growth compounder the suits are sleeping on, buy before the earnings catalyst and let the chasers drive the price higher after the fact.
Straight talk on TXN: the stock is now trading above my original $230 buy-up-to price. I'm not recommending that new money chase it here. The trade has moved.
But that's the point. My subscribers got TXN before the 24% rip. Before the Barclays upgrade. Before the $75 overnight target hike. Before CNBC found the story.

24% in Two Weeks by Fading Wall Street's "Coin-Flip Research"

Texas Instruments (TXN) is one of the stocks most watched by Zacks.com visitors lately. So, it might be a good idea to review some of the factors that might affect the near-term performance of the stock.
Over the past month, shares of this chipmaker have returned +7.4%, compared to the Zacks S&P 500 composite's +4.9% change. During this period, the Zacks Semiconductor - General industry, which Texas Instruments falls in, has gained 16%. The key question now is: What could be the stock's future direction?
Although media reports or rumors about a significant change in a company's business prospects usually cause its stock to trend and lead to an immediate price change, there are always certain fundamental factors that ultimately drive the buy-and-hold decision.
Earnings Estimate Revisions
Rather than focusing on anything else, we at Zacks prioritize evaluating the change in a company's earnings projection. This is because we believe the fair value for its stock is determined by the present value of its future stream of earnings.
Our analysis is essentially based on how sell-side analysts covering the stock are revising their earnings estimates to take the latest business trends into account. When earnings estimates for a company go up, the fair value for its stock goes up as well. And when a stock's fair value is higher than its current market price, investors tend to buy the stock, resulting in its price moving upward. Because of this, empirical studies indicate a strong correlation between trends in earnings estimate revisions and short-term stock price movements.
For the current quarter, Texas Instruments is expected to post earnings of $1.21 per share, indicating a change of -18.8% from the year-ago quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate has changed -12.3% over the last 30 days.
For the current fiscal year, the consensus earnings estimate of $5.08 points to a change of -28.2% from the prior year. Over the last 30 days, this estimate has changed -0.5%.
For the next fiscal year, the consensus earnings estimate of $5.81 indicates a change of +14.3% from what Texas Instruments is expected to report a year ago. Over the past month, the estimate has changed -5.1%.

In the case of Texas Instruments, the consensus sales estimate of $3.86 billion for the current quarter points to a year-over-year change of -5.4%. The $15.52 billion and $17.17 billion estimates for the current and next fiscal years indicate changes of -11.4% and +10.6%, respectively.
Last Reported Results and Surprise History
Texas Instruments reported revenues of $4.15 billion in the last reported quarter, representing a year-over-year change of -8.4%. EPS of $1.47 for the same period compares with $1.80 a year ago.
Compared to the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.11 billion, the reported revenues represent a surprise of +0.99%. The EPS surprise was +8.09%.
The company beat consensus EPS estimates in each of the trailing four quarters. The company topped consensus revenue estimates three times over this period.
Valuation
Without considering a stock's valuation, no investment decision can be efficient. In predicting a stock's future price performance, it's crucial to determine whether its current price correctly reflects the intrinsic value of the underlying business and the company's growth prospects.
While comparing the current values of a company's valuation multiples, such as price-to-earnings (P/E), price-to-sales (P/S) and price-to-cash flow (P/CF), with its own historical values helps determine whether its stock is fairly valued, overvalued, or undervalued, comparing the company relative to its peers on these parameters gives a good sense of the reasonability of the stock's price.
The Zacks Value Style Score (part of the Zacks Style Scores system), which pays close attention to both traditional and unconventional valuation metrics to grade stocks from A to F (an An is better than a B; a B is better than a C; and so on), is pretty helpful in identifying whether a stock is overvalued, rightly valued, or temporarily undervalued.

Following this, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index jumped 3.2% to a record high. The index has surged 47.2% year to date and is on track for a bull run this year.
Industry Poised to Grow
As mega-cap tech companies continue their spending spree on AI infrastructure, investors are growing confident. The semiconductor sub-industry is projected to deliver first-quarter earnings growth of 109.2%, significantly outpacing the broader S&P 500 information technology sector, which is expected to grow by 48.2%, according to LSEG data, as reported by Reuters.
The ongoing AI infrastructure boom is expected to help the broader semiconductor industry this year, with annual sales projected to reach $975 billion globally, according to a Deloitte report.
The report also predicts that generative AI chips will hit revenues of $500 billion in 2026, or roughly half of global chip sales.
As artificial intelligence moves beyond high-end data centers and into everyday devices, the need for specialized AI chips is growing fast. At the same time, demand for memory components like NAND flash and DRAM is picking up again, fueled by more powerful computing needs and AI-driven workloads. AI and Earnings Set Semiconductor Stocks on Record Rally: 5 Top Picks

Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), a developer of wireless communication technologies and semiconductors for mobile devices and networks, closed Monday at $150.26 up 0.95%. The stock moved higher after reports of a potential OpenAI smartphone-chip collaboration and during Monday’s session investors are watching how this AI opportunity could reshape Qualcomm’s growth mix ahead of its earnings release.
The company’s trading volume reached 41.6 million shares, which is roughly 242% above compared with its three-month average of 12.1 million shares. Qualcomm IPO'd in 1991 and has grown 27,052% since going public.
How the markets moved today
The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) added 0.12% to finish Monday at 7,173.91, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) gained 0.20% to close at 24,887.10. Among semiconductors, industry peers Texas Instruments (NASDAQ:TXN) closed at $269.50 (-2.77%) and Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO) finished at $418.20 (-1.08%), lagging Qualcomm’s AI-fueled advance.

Qualcomm shares rose after reports that the company is working with OpenAI on AI-focused smartphone processors, a development that highlights growing interest in running advanced models directly on mobile devices. Stock Market Today, April 27: Qualcomm Rises on Reported OpenAI Smartphone Chip Collaboration

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Monday closed up +0.12%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed down -0.13%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +0.01%. June E-mini S&P futures (ESM26) rose +0.14%, and June E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQM26) fell -0.02%.
Stock indexes settled mostly higher on Monday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posting new all-time highs. Optimism that demand for AI-infrastructure will remain strong and continue to power technology earnings boosted stocks on Monday. The megacap technology stocks of Alphabet, Apple, Amazon.com, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms all report quarterly earnings this week.

The broader market saw some downward pressure from Monday’s +2% rally in WTI crude oil prices, which raised inflation expectations. Crude oil prices jumped after President Trump on Saturday canceled planned negotiations with Iran in Pakistan, saying Iran "offered a lot, but not enough" to continue negotiations. Iranian President Pezeshkian said Iran won't enter "imposed negotiations under threats or blockade." Secretary of State Rubio said Iran still wants to retain control of the Strait of Hormuz, and that was "unacceptable" to the US.
However, AI-infrastructure stocks found support on Monday after TF International Securities said that Qualcomm is working with OpenAI and Taiwan’s MediaTek to develop smartphone processors. Also, Micron Technology and SanDisk both received buy ratings from Melius Research. In addition, strength in health insurers was a positive factor for the market.
Stock indexes found support from the Axios report that Iran has given the US a new proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end the war, which includes postponing nuclear negotiations. The plan calls for extending the ceasefire so the parties can work toward a permanent end to the war, and nuclear talks would come later, only after a US blockade of the strait is lifted. The White House said Monday afternoon that President Trump is discussing the proposal with national security and foreign policy officials.
The US and Iran are locked in a battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides blocking the waterway to gain leverage during an extended ceasefire. The US increased pressure on Iran with its naval blockade as it seeks to get Iran to agree to talks, while Israel and Lebanon are set to extend a ceasefire for three weeks.
WTI crude oil prices (CLM26) rose by more than +2% on Monday after President Trump canceled a planned weekend trip by US envoys to Pakistan and Iran said it won’t negotiate while the US naval blockade of Iran remains in force. The Strait of Hormuz remains essentially closed, threatening to deepen the global energy crisis. The ongoing blockade could exacerbate global oil and fuel shortages, as about a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transits through the strait. Goldman Sachs estimates that crude output in the Persian Gulf has been curtailed by about 14.5 million bpd, or more than 50%, so far in April, and that the current disruption has drawn down nearly 500 million bbl from global crude stockpiles, which could hit a billion bbl by June.
Kevin Warsh now appears to be on a glide path toward Senate approval as the new Fed Chair after Senator Thom Tillis said on Sunday that he dropped his opposition to the nomination. Mr. Tillis dropped his opposition after the US Justice Department dropped its criminal investigation into the Fed’s overspending on the renovation of its building, in line with Mr. Tillis’ demand. Mr. Tillis views the investigation into Fed Chair Powell as an attempt to force the Fed to cut interest rates. The Senate Banking Committee is due to vote on Mr. Warsh’s appointment this Wednesday and then send the nomination to the full Senate for a vote.
The markets are discounting a 0% chance for a +25 bp FOMC rate hike at the Tue-Wed policy meeting. The markets are expecting the FOMC to leave policy unchanged this week as it awaits further developments in oil prices and inflation.
Earnings season ramps up this week with several Magnificent Seven technology stocks reporting. Earnings results thus far have been supportive of stocks. As of Monday, 80% of the 139 S&P 500 companies that reported Q1 earnings have beaten estimates. Q1 S&P 500 earnings are projected to climb +12% y/y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. Stripping out the technology sector, Q1 earnings are projected to increase around +3%, the weakest in two years.
Overseas stock markets settled mixed on Monday. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.39%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +0.16%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 rallied to a new record high and closed up +1.38%.
Interest Rates
June 10-year T-notes (ZNM6) on Monday closed down -6 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +3.6 bp to 4.337%. June T-notes retreated on Monday due to the +2% increase in the price of WTI crude oil, which boosts inflation expectations. The 10-year breakeven inflation rate rose to a 14-month high of 2.457% on Monday. Supply pressures also weighed on T-note prices, as the Treasury auctioned $69 billion of 2-year T-notes and $70 billion of 5-year T-notes.
Demand for Monday’s Treasury auctions was mixed. The 2-year T-note auction saw decent demand, with a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.65, above the 10-auction average of 2.60, while demand for the 5-year T-note auction was tepid, with a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.33, below the 10-auction average of 2.35.
European government bond yields moved higher on Monday. The 10-year German bund yield rose +3.9 bp to 3.033%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +6.0 bp to 4.972%.
The German May GfK consumer confidence index fell -5.2 to a 3.25-year low of -33.3, weaker than expectations of -30.0.
Swaps are discounting a 6% chance of a +25 bp ECB rate hike at its next policy meeting on Thursday.
US Stock Movers
Health insurance stocks rallied on Monday to provide support to the overall market. Centene (CNC) closed up more than +4%, and Elevance Health (ELV) and Humana (HUM) closed up more than +3%. Also, UnitedHealth Group (UNH) and the Cigna Group (CI) closed up more than +2%, and Cardinal Health (CAH) and Molina Healthcare (MOH) closed up more than +1%.
Airline stocks and cruise line operators fell on Monday after WTI crude oil rose more than +2%, which raises fuel costs and weighs on corporate profits. American Airlines Group (AAL) closed down more than -3%, and Alaska Air Group (ALK), Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL), and Southwest Airlines (LUV) closed down more than -2%. Also, United Airlines Holdings (UAL), Carnival (CCL), and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NCLH) closed down more than -1%, and Delta Air Lines (DAL) closed down -0.37%.
Chipmakers moved lower on Monday, weighing on the broader market. ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed down more than -8% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100. Also, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Marvell Technology (MRVL), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -3%. In addition, Applied Materials (AMAT), Microchip Technology (MCHP), NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI), KLA Corp (KLAC), and Texas Instruments (TXN) closed down more than -2%, and Analog Devices (ADI) and ASML Holding NV (ASML) closed down more than -1%.
Sandisk (SNDK) closed up more than +8% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +5% after Melius Research LLC initiated coverage on the stocks with buy recommendations.
Stanley Black & Decker (SWK) closed up more than +4% after its board authorized a $500 million stock buyback program.
Verizon Communications (VZ) closed up more than +1% to lead gainers in the Dow Jones Industrials after boosting its full-year adjusted EPS forecast to $4.95-$4.99 from a previous forecast of $4.90-$4.95, stronger than the consensus of $4.90.
Fortinet (FTNT) closed up more than +1% after Arete double-upgraded the stock to buy from sell with a price target of $104.
Crowdstrike Holdings (CRWD) closed up more than +1% after Mizuho Securities upgraded the stock to outperform from neutral with a price target of $520.
VeraDermics (MANE) closed up more than +46% after reporting that its oral extended-release minoxidil formulation VDPHL01 met all primary and key secondary endpoints with high statistical significance in a Phase 2/3 clinical trial for male pattern baldness.
Organon & Co. (OGN) closed up more than +16% after Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. had lined up a short-term loan to finance its $12 billion acquisition of the company.
Oruka Therapeutics (ORKA) closed up more than +10% after giving positive results from a mid-stage trial of its therapy to treat plaque psoriasis.
Domino’s Pizza (DPZ) closed down more than -8% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after reporting Q1 revenue of $1.15 billion, below the consensus of $1.16 billion.
GE Vernova (GEV) closed down more than -2% after BNP Paribas downgraded the stock to neutral from buy.
Adobe (ADBE) closed down more than -2% after Mizuho Securities downgraded the stock to neutral from outperform.
