The Travelers Companies, Inc., through its subsidiaries, provides a range of commercial and personal property, and casualty insurance products and services to businesses, government units, associations, and individuals in the United States and internationally. The company operates through three segments: Business Insurance, Bond & Specialty Insurance, and Personal Insurance. The Business Insurance segment offers workers' compensation, commercial automobile and property, general liability, commercial multi-peril, employers' liability, public and product liability, professional indemnity, marine, aviation, onshore and offshore energy, construction, terrorism, personal accident, and kidnap and ransom insurance products. This segment operates through select accounts, which serve small businesses; commercial accounts that serve mid-sized businesses; national accounts, which serve large companies; and national property and other that serve large and mid-sized customers, commercial trucking industry, and agricultural businesses, as well as markets and distributes its products through brokers, wholesale agents, and program managers. The Bond & Specialty Insurance segment provides surety, fidelity, management and professional liability, and other property and casualty coverages and related risk management services through independent agencies and brokers. The Personal Insurance segment offers property and casualty insurance covering personal risks, primarily automobile and homeowners' insurance to individuals through independent agencies and brokers. The Travelers Companies, Inc. was founded in 1853 and is based in New York, New York.

Chip stocks are trading mostly lower today after Thursday’s sharp rally, with the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) trading slightly lower after Thursday’s rally of +8.39%. Thursday’s rally was sparked by signs that AI spending is continuing after Oracle reported quarterly capital expenditures that were higher than expected, driven by increased data center spending. Chip leaders today include AMD (AMD) and Intel (INTC), with gains of more than +3%.
Adobe (ADBE) is down more than -8% after CFO Dan Durn said he would leave the company on June 15, following news earlier this year that Adobe’s CEO would resign. The Adobe news put continued downward pressure on software stocks, which were undercut on Thursday by negative earnings news from Oracle (ORCL). ServiceNow (NOW), Atlassian (TEAM), and Workday (WDAY) are all trading down by more than -3%.
Airline stocks are seeing continued support after oil prices today moved lower, adding to Thursday’s decline. United Airlines (UAL) and Southwest Airlines (LUV) are trading up more than +0.5%.
Energy stocks and service providers are mixed despite today’s continued slump in oil prices. Baker Hughes is down more than -1%, but Occidental Petroleum (OXY) and Marathon Petroleum (MPC) are up more than +1%.
Astera Labs (ALAB), CoreWeave (CRWV), Nebius Group (NBIS), Rocket Lab (RKLB), and Teradyn (TER) are seeing support today after Nasdaq announced on Thursday that those stocks will join the Nasdaq 100 Index, effective at the market open on June 22. Stocks leaving the Nasdaq 100 include Charter Communications (CHTR), Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTSH), Insmed (INSM), Verisk Analytics (VRSK), and Zscaler (ZS).
Travelers (TRV) is down more than -1% after Barclays cut its rating on the stock to underweight from equal-weight due to a downbeat outlook for profits in the property and casualty sector.

In the latest look at the underlying components of the S&P 500 ordered by largest market capitalization, Travelers Companies Inc (Symbol: TRV) has taken over the #176 spot from Ciena Corp (Symbol: CIEN), according to The Online Investor.
Market capitalization is an important data point for investors to keep an eye on, for various reasons. The most basic reason is that it gives a true comparison of the value attributed by the stock market to a given company's stock. Many beginning investors look at one stock trading at $10 and another trading at $20 and mistakenly think the latter company is worth twice as much — that of course is a completely meaningless comparison without knowing how many shares of each company exist. Travelers has 94% of its investments in fixed maturities and short-term investments, with equity securities, real estate investments and other investments accounting for the remaining 6%.
Travelers continues to invest heavily in technology to improve underwriting, claims and distribution partner experience. Management indicated that it invests more than $1.5 billion annually in technology, including an AI strategy, while pursuing ongoing upgrades to pricing models and field tools. New product enhancements and digital platforms such as TRAVIS and TCAP are helping drive market share gains and stronger distribution relationships.
Risks for TRV
Exposure to catastrophe events, primarily from severe wind and hail storms and winter storms across multiple states, remains a recurring source of underwriting variability for property and casualty insurers. Management continues to describe weather-related severity as an ongoing feature of the loss environment, which can drive quarter-over-quarter earnings swings and complicate near-term margin expectations.

Rising reinsurance costs can reduce earnings and constrain underwriting flexibility, particularly after periods of elevated global catastrophe activity.
Higher repair costs and other inflation-linked inputs can lift claims severity in both auto and homeowners lines and challenge pricing and retention.
Conclusion
Strong underwriting, healthy premium growth, rising investment income and sustained pricing strength bode well for future earnings growth. However, catastrophe losses, rising reinsurance costs and inflation-driven claims severity remain the key concerns.

Good news is bad news again, and Wall Street is having one of those days.
A blowout jobs report landed Friday morning, and stocks responded by doing the opposite of what you might expect. The Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) index dropped nearly 3% by 1:18 p.m. ET, the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) fell 1.8%, and even the stodgy Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) slipped 0.8%.

The technology sector bore the brunt of the damage, dropping 4.3%, while defensive sectors including consumer staples, healthcare, and utilities posted gains. 172,000 new jobs is the kind of economic strength that makes investors nervous.
Mo' jobs, mo' problems
Markets plunging on a stronger-than-expected jobs report may sound silly, but there's actually solid logic behind it.
May nonfarm payrolls rose by 172,000, more than double economists' expectations, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.3%. That's great if you're looking for work, less great if you were hoping the Federal Reserve might hold off on raising interest rates. The data prompted traders to fully price in a quarter-point interest rate increase by the end of 2026.
Semiconductor stocks led the decline. Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) dropped 5% and Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) fell 5.5%, while Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) and AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) both lost more than 9%. These four companies alone erased over $500 billion in combined market capitalization by midday.
When money gets more expensive, high-growth tech valuations tend to compress. Today was a textbook example of that dynamic.
On the Dow, the usual heavyweights Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) burned 264 points and Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) took away another 180 points. But 15 of the 30 Dow stocks are trading up today, led by defensive stalwarts. Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) gained 3.8%, adding back 18 points, and Travelers (NYSE: TRV) boosted the Dow's total score by 54 points.
Oil fell 3% despite ongoing uncertainty in the Strait of Hormuz situation. The crypto market experienced broad price drops, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) sliding 4.9% and dropping below $61,000. Crypto investors were primed for volatility earlier this week, when Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) sold 32 Bitcoin to cover dividend payments. It was the company's first crypto sale since 2022, breaking from chairman Michael Saylor's long-standing "never sell Bitcoin" stance.
Elsewhere on the index front, SpaceX is preparing for its June 12 IPO at a $1.75 trillion valuation, but don't expect to see it in S&P 500 index funds anytime soon. SpaceX can't join until at least June 2027, and only if it turns a profit and boosts its public float. The Standard & Poor's selection panel is sticking to its stated requirements. The company lost nearly $5 billion last year, so it could take a while before SpaceX qualifies.
Playing defense into the weekend
The defensive rotation into healthcare, utilities, and consumer staples suggests institutional money is playing it safe heading into the weekend. That makes sense in light of the hiring surprise and its likely rate-boosting aftermath.
The companies leading today's decline remain among the most profitable in the market. Their fundamentals have not changed since yesterday. For retail investors, the takeaway is familiar: volatility is the cost of showing up on Wall Street.

Market Indexes Tumble at Midday as Treasury Yields Spike on Hot Employment Report

Berkshire Hathaway's BRK.B planned $6.8 billion acquisition of Taylor Morrison Home Corp. represents a strategic deployment of capital into a well-established homebuilder with significant exposure to favorable long-term U.S. housing fundamentals. The transaction aligns with Berkshire's proven acquisition philosophy of purchasing high-quality businesses with durable earnings, capable management teams and attractive valuations. It also ranks among the first major deals under CEO Greg Abel's leadership.

The conglomerate typically seeks businesses with strong returns, conservative balance sheets, durable competitive positions and experienced leadership. With roughly $397.4 billion in liquidity, Berkshire is well-positioned to pursue large-scale acquisitions. Its most notable recent transaction was the $9.7 billion all-cash acquisition of OxyChem last year.
Acquisitions have been instrumental in Berkshire's long-term success, enhancing cash generation, broadening revenue sources and creating additional opportunities for shareholder value creation. Taylor Morrison thus fits squarely within that successful acquisition framework.

The increasing volume of policies across multiple business lines, strong retention rates, and expansion into new geographic areas and distribution channels are expected to drive premiums. Premiums should also benefit from its specialty product portfolio, expanded producer appointments, strategic partnerships with other insurance carriers and rate increases. PLMR expects its net earned premium ratio to increase into the upper forties and anticipates slight improvements in the acquisition expense ratio for 2026.
PLMR identifies Surety as an attractive long-term growth opportunity. Like crop insurance, Surety is not correlated with the traditional property and casualty insurance cycle, offering diversification and stability.
Net investment income is expected to rise, supported by a high-quality fixed-income portfolio, higher average investment balances and improved yields. This solid investment base is poised to generate strong returns.
The company uses reinsurance to limit loss exposure and support policy limits through both excess of loss and quota share structures. For 2026, PLMR expects the loss ratio, including catastrophes, to be in the mid-to-upper thirties. PLMR expects the adjusted combined ratio for 2026 to be in the mid-70s. These expectations reflect growth, business mix, integration of Gray Surety and the use of capital as the company builds the specialty insurance platform.
The insurer maintains a strong capital position and a debt-free balance sheet. As part of its shareholder return initiatives, Palomar continues to execute share buybacks.
With these strengths in place, Palomar expects adjusted net income to be in the range of $260-$275 million in 2026, up from the earlier guidance of $$210-$215 million.
Risks for PLMR
Palomar has been experiencing higher expenses driven by increases in incurred losses and loss adjustment expenses, interest expense, acquisition expenses and other underwriting expenses.
