Hospitals and testing laboratories are moving toward routine production, but gross-margin recovery is taking longer and cash-flow breakeven has moved to 2028. That leaves execution on consumables utilization and margins as the key near-term test.
PACB’s Revenue Cut Resets Near-Term Expectations
PacBio lowered 2026 revenue guidance to $155-$165 million from $165-$175 million. The new range implies a 3% decline to 3% growth year over year, with consumables expected to remain the main growth driver.
Second-quarter revenues fell 2% to $39 million and missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 4.2%. Instrument revenues declined 9.9% to $12.8 million, reflecting lower average selling prices and fewer Vega shipments.
PacBio’s SPRQ-Nx Transition Delays Consumables Upside
SPRQ-Nx lowers the U.S. list price of a 20x HiFi human genome to $345, about 30% below the prior chemistry, and allows SMRT Cells to be reused up to three times. More than one-third of the installed base had enabled the software by June-end.
Near-term utilization is still constrained by customers validating multi-use workflows and working through existing inventory. Management expects the transition to continue through the third quarter before consumables begin scaling more meaningfully toward year-end.
PACB’s Clinical Demand Offers an Offset
Clinical consumable shipments increased 67% in the second quarter, while Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) revenues rose 52% to $14.4 million. PacBio also shipped 20 Revio systems, up from 15 a year earlier, with most placements going to new customers.
The broader sequencing market remains competitive. Illumina, Inc. ILMN said clinical demand helped drive adoption of its NovaSeq X platform in the second quarter. Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. TMO continues to expand precision-medicine and multiomics capabilities, underscoring the range of alternatives available to research and clinical customers.
PacBio’s Margin Outlook Shows the Cost of Transition
PacBio reduced its 2026 non-GAAP gross-margin outlook to 35%-37%. The revision reflects about $2.5 million of Vega manufacturing transition costs, elevated compute and memory expenses, a slower SPRQ-Nx adoption curve and lower-priced strategic Revio placements.
Second-quarter non-GAAP gross margin was 36%, down from 38% a year earlier. SPRQ-Nx can improve platform economics over time, but the company first needs higher utilization and a smoother manufacturing transition to support margin recovery.
PACB’s 2028 Breakeven Shift Raises Execution Stakes
PacBio now expects cash-flow breakeven in 2028 instead of by the end of 2027. It expects to finish 2026 with approximately $175-$185 million in cash, while non-GAAP operating expenses are projected to be $215-$220 million.
Cost actions should reduce cash consumption. PacBio expects its restructuring to cut 2027 compensation-related expenses by about $15-$20 million, with another $15-$20 million of annual savings as high-throughput platform development spending declines.
PACB’s Style Scores Keep the Outlook Guarded
The central question is whether rising clinical use and SPRQ-Nx adoption can offset weak research funding, softer instrument economics and delayed margin recovery. Until those trends become more visible in recurring consumables growth, execution remains the key test.

TMO Stock Could Gain Following the Launch of EMPAD G2 Detector

Avantor, Inc. AVTR is showing clearer signs that its Revival program is improving execution. VWR returned to growth sooner than expected, Bioscience & Medtech Products orders strengthened and management raised its 2026 outlook.
The recovery is not complete. Earnings remain pressured, margins have contracted and the product segment has yet to translate healthier orders into sustained revenue growth. That mix makes AVTR a selective investment case rather than a clear-cut bullish story.
Avantor's Revival Starts to Lift VWR Growth
VWR Distribution & Services posted 1.7% organic growth in the second quarter of 2026, returning to positive growth ahead of management's expectations. Higher volumes and stronger commercial execution were the main drivers.
Avantor strengthened large global customer relationships, accelerated contract onboarding and improved e-commerce activity after relaunching vwr.com. Direct traffic, conversion and daily sales improved as the quarter progressed, showing that Revival initiatives are producing measurable gains.
AVTR's BMP Orders Improve Before Revenue Does
Bioscience & Medtech Products (BMP) remained the weak spot, with organic revenues down 5.6% year over year. Fluid Handling and NuSil declined in the mid-teens, while Research & Specialty Chemicals fell in the mid-single digits.
BMP delivered double-digit order growth and a 1.1 times book-to-bill ratio, with healthy orders across all business units. Management expects organic growth to return in the second half of 2026, but order strength still needs to convert into sustained sales.
Avantor's Margins Keep the Recovery in Check
Second-quarter gross margin fell about 120 basis points to 31.7%. Adjusted operating margin contracted 170 basis points to 13.3%, as lower volumes, unfavorable mix, inflation and higher freight costs pressured profitability.
A revenue recovery will have limited earnings impact without better operating leverage. Thermo Fisher Scientific TMO, which serves laboratory and biopharma workflows through technologies, purchasing channels and pharmaceutical services, is a relevant competitive reference point as Avantor works to strengthen customer retention.
AVTR's 2026 Outlook Improves but Earnings Stay Soft
Avantor raised its 2026 organic revenue growth outlook to negative 0.5% to positive 0.5% and lifted adjusted earnings per share guidance to 80-83 cents. The increase reflects better second-quarter performance and stronger second-half expectations for VWR.
The Zacks model still projects about 0.4% revenue growth for 2026 and a 10.7% decline in adjusted earnings per share. Agilent Technologies A, which supplies instruments, software, consumables and services across life-science, diagnostics and applied markets, provides another useful industry benchmark for Avantor's recovery.
Avantor's Balance Sheet Offers Some Flexibility
Avantor ended the second quarter with about $307 million in cash and total debt of roughly $3.7 billion. Adjusted net leverage stood at 3.3 times, leaving the balance sheet improved but still moderately leveraged.
The company repaid $112.1 million of debt during the quarter and continues to prioritize excess free cash flow for debt reduction. Continued deleveraging can add flexibility, although progress also depends on sustained cash generation.
AVTR's Buy Signal Faces Weak Style Scores
Avantor's operating progress supports a more constructive view, but the evidence remains mixed. VWR is recovering, BMP orders are improving and guidance moved higher, while earnings and margins remain under pressure.
The stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), a favorable near-term signal. Top Research Reports for Amgen, Thermo Fisher & Pepsi

At Holdings Channel, we have reviewed the latest batch of the 84 most recent 13F filings for the 06/30/2026 reporting period, and noticed that Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc (Symbol: TMO) was held by 25 of these funds. When hedge fund managers appear to be thinking alike, we find it is a good idea to take a closer look.
Before we proceed, it is important to point out that 13F filings do not tell the whole story, because these funds are only required to disclose their long positions with the SEC, but are not required to disclose their short positions. A fund making a bearish bet against a stock by shorting calls, for example, might also be long some amount of stock as they trade around their overall bearish position. This long component could show up in a 13F filing and everyone might assume the fund is bullish, but this tells only part of the story because the bearish/short side of the position is not seen.
Having given that caveat, we believe that looking at groups of 13F filings can be revealing, especially when comparing one holding period to another. Below, let's take a look at the change in TMO positions, for this latest batch of 13F filers:
In terms of shares owned, we count 11 of the above funds having increased existing TMO positions from 03/31/2026 to 06/30/2026, with 11 having decreased their positions and 1 new position.
Looking beyond these particular funds in this one batch of most recent filers, we tallied up the TMO share count in the aggregate among all of the funds which held TMO at the 06/30/2026 reporting period (out of the 8,826 we looked at in total). We then compared that number to the sum total of TMO shares those same funds held back at the 03/31/2026 period, to see how the aggregate share count held by hedge funds has moved for TMO. We found that between these two periods, funds reduced their holdings by 300,018,769 shares in the aggregate, from 330,239,531 down to 30,220,762 for a share count decline of approximately -90.85%. While looking at individual 13F filings can sometimes be misleading due to the long-only nature of the information, the sum total across groups of funds from one reporting period to another can be a lot more revealing and relevant, providing interesting stock ideas that merit further research, like Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc (Symbol: TMO).

Shares of Bio-Rad Laboratories BIO have climbed 19.1% in the past month, putting the durability of that momentum in focus. Digital PCR demand and steadier Clinical Diagnostics performance provide support.
Yet Life Science demand remains weak and the stock trades at a sizable valuation premium. Planned cost savings could help margins, but investors must weigh execution against subdued end markets.
BIO's Digital PCR Momentum Supports the Bull Case
Bio-Rad's currency-neutral droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) revenues rose 6% year over year in the second quarter of 2026, while instrument revenues increased more than 20%. Management cited competitive wins and conversions from quantitative PCR. The Stilla portfolio also accelerated revenue growth and delivered margins ahead of management's original expectations.
In the past year, the company’s shares have risen 26.4% against the industry’s 23.1% decline.
Management expects ddPCR to contribute to a mid-single-digit sequential Life Science revenue ramp from the third quarter to the fourth quarter. QIAGEN N.V. QGEN markets its QIAcuity Digital PCR System. Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. TMO offers the QuantStudio Absolute Q Digital PCR System. Both illustrate the competitive backdrop around digital PCR instruments.
Bio-Rad Diagnostics Adds Recurring Revenue Support
Clinical Diagnostics generated $399 million in second-quarter sales, up 2.6% year over year reported and 0.3% currency-neutral. Quality systems, diabetes products and blood typing drove growth, partly offset by lower infectious disease sales.
Clinical Diagnostics represented 60.5% of Bio-Rad's 2025 revenues. Management expects quality controls and blood typing to contribute to sequential improvement into the fourth quarter, giving BIO a recurring-revenue base that can partly cushion the uneven Life Science cycle.
BIO Still Faces Weak Life Science Demand
Life Science remains the main constraint. Second-quarter sales fell 4.1% reported and 5.1% currency-neutral as academic research demand stayed soft and process chromatography faced a difficult comparison. Excluding process chromatography, currency-neutral revenues were approximately flat.
Management expects full-year 2026 Life Science currency-neutral revenues to decline between 3% and 1%. Academic and government demand remains below historical levels, biopharma stabilization is still early and China declined in the high teens. Those conditions limit visibility into a broader recovery.
Bio-Rad's Valuation Raises the Bar After the Rally
After the rally, valuation leaves less room for execution misses. BIO trades at 40.2X forward 12-month earnings, compared with 17.4X for the Medical-Products sub-industry and its five-year median of 28.8X. The premium raises the importance of sustained operating improvement.
Bio-Rad's restructuring program is expected to deliver $30 million to $35 million of annualized net cost savings after reinvestment and about 40-50 basis points of operating-margin expansion in 2027. Realizing those benefits would help support the premium, while weaker demand could make the multiple harder to defend.
BIO's Mixed Scores Temper the Momentum Case
The 19.1% monthly move has support from digital PCR placements, steadier diagnostics demand and planned cost actions, but the broader picture is mixed. Weak Life Science spending and an elevated valuation keep the momentum case balanced.
BIO currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), with a Value Score of C and Growth Score of D, Momentum Score of D and VGM Score of D. Within the Zacks Style Scores, A and B are preferred to C and D, while the Zacks Rank is the primary short-term screen.
