As consumers, we regularly hand over money to retailers in this country. Yet there are selected companies in the sector that turn this relationship around by paying folks to own them.
I'm talking, of course, about shareholder dividends. Last month, two famous and long-standing operators in the sector, Macy's (NYSE: M) and TJ Maxx and Marshalls owner TJX Companies (NYSE: TJX), announced dividend raises. Both hikes were substantial, so they're worth diving into a bit to determine whether they support the buy case for the two retail stocks. Here's what I think.

1. Macy's
In advance of its latest earnings release, Macy's declared its dividend raise. The company said its investor payout would be getting a 5% enhancement, for a new quarterly total of just over $0.19 per share.
Macy's is a leaner operation these days because it's been pursuing its "bold new chapter" strategy. The plan is to reduce the company's footprint by selling off chunks of its considerable (and often quite valuable) real estate holdings. The program seems to be closer to the end than the beginning, as fewer transactions were recorded in the company's fiscal 2025. With that, the gains from such sales tumbled to $3 million from fiscal 2024's $41 million.
A shrinking footprint means fewer stores to collect revenue. Not surprisingly, the company's net sales slumped in fiscal 2025 compared with 2024, though not by a scary amount (2.4% to $21.8 billion). In a more encouraging development, comparable sales, a key metric in the retail trade, ticked up 1.5%. That represented a return to annual growth for the company.
The company was also well in the black on the bottom line for the year, although net income not under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) fell by 14% to $643 million ($2.32 per share).
On a negative note, guidance wasn't impressive, with the company forecasting a dip in fiscal 2026 revenue to $21.4 billion to under $21.7 billion, and "comps" ranging from a decline of 0.5% to a gain of 0.5% on the previous year's figure. Per share, adjusted net income should land at $1.90 to $2.10 per share.
That, to me, is telling. It seems that even a leaner and more focused Macy's will still have an uphill climb as a traditional retailer in a world swarming with aggressive online competitors. While I admire the improvements the company has made, I'd pass on the stock.
Macy's raised dividend was dispensed on April 1 to investors of record as of March 13. It yields a relatively generous 4.2% at the most recent closing price, which places it in high-yield dividend territory.
2. TJX Companies
A retail stock that looks more appealing is discount specialist TJX. One well-liked item the company hasn't been marking down is its quarterly distribution -- at the end of March, the company announced no less than a 13% dividend raise, pushing up the per-share payout to $0.48. The company didn't hesitate to add that this is its 29th dividend raise in the last 30 years.
TJX's announcement came more than a month after the company's fourth-quarter and full-year earnings release, which covered its fiscal 2026. Comparable sales saw a pleasant 5% lift that year, helping net sales grow by 7% over fiscal 2025 to nearly $60.4 billion. GAAP net income experienced a more pronounced lift, rising by 13% to almost $5.5 billion ($4.87 per share).
Challenges such as tariffs and inflation were foremost in the American consumer's mind last year, which helped drive business to bargain outlets like those operated by TJX. Though this economy isn't out of the woods yet, management seems to be preparing for a more modest fiscal 2027. It guided for comparable sales growth of only 2% to 3% and per-share net income of $4.93 to $5.02 -- which would be 3% higher year over year at most.
Investors sold out of TJX in the wake of that earnings report, and the guidance was a key reason for this. Although I wouldn't be quite so discouraged, as the company continues to expect some level of growth and our economy could still take some real hits, I don't see a spectacular future for TJX. There are stocks with greater potential elsewhere.
There's still a chance for market players to take advantage of TJX's dividend raise. It kicks in with the next payment, scheduled for June 4, for stockholders of record as of May 14. The $0.48 per share would yield a theoretical 1.2%.

A month has gone by since the last earnings report for Ross Stores (ROST). Shares have added about 3% in that time frame, outperforming the S&P 500.

Total sales reached $6.64 billion, rising 12% year over year and beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $6.4 billion. Comparable store sales (comps) improved 9% year over year. Results benefited from compelling, well-curated holiday assortments in its stores, stronger customer engagement driven by new marketing campaigns, and well-executed in-store initiatives that elevated the overall shopping experience.
Insight Into ROST’s Q4 Performance
Cost of goods sold (COGS) rose 11.2% year over year to $4.8 billion. COGS, as a percentage of sales, declined 65 basis points (bps) year over year.
SG&A expenses increased 18.2% year over year to $990.1 million and rose 75 bps, as a percentage of sales, due to the prior-year gain from the packaway facility sale. Excluding this impact, SG&A declined 30 bps, reflecting improved expense discipline.
The company’s operating income rose 11.4% year over year to $$814.1 million, with the operating margin contracting 10 bps to 12.6%, including a 105-bps benefit from the sale of a packaway facility.
Sneak Peek Into ROST’s Other Financials
Ross Stores ended fiscal 2025 with cash and cash equivalents of $4.6 billion, after funding business growth and capital requirements. The company has a long-term debt of $1.02 billion and a total shareholders’ equity of $6.2 billion.
Consolidated inventories increased 8% year over year, with packaway accounting for 37% of the total inventory, down from 41% in the prior year. Management remains encouraged by the improved composition and confident in its year-end inventory position.
In the fiscal fourth quarter, Ross Stores repurchased 1.5 million shares for an aggregate cost of $262 million. In fiscal 2025, the company repurchased 7.1 million shares for $1.05 billion, completing its planned two-year share repurchase program. The company approved a two-year $2.55 billion share repurchase authorization for fiscal 2026 and 2027, marking a 21% increase from $2.1 billion in common stock repurchased across fiscal 2024 and 2025.
What ROST Expects for FY26
The company exited the fiscal fourth quarter with solid momentum and is encouraged by a very strong start to the Spring season. For first-quarter fiscal 2026, the company projects comps to increase 7-8%, with total sales estimated to increase 10-12% year over year. Assuming performance aligns with this outlook, the fiscal first-quarter earnings per share are expected to be $1.60-$1.67 compared with $1.47 in the quarter ended May 3, 2025.
For first-quarter fiscal 2026, the operating margin is expected to be 11.8-12.1% compared with 12.2% in the prior-year period. The anticipated decline primarily reflects higher distribution center costs associated with the facility opened in the second quarter of fiscal 2025, as well as unfavorable timing of packaway-related expenses. The company also expects higher incentive compensation versus fiscal 2025, when results fell short of plan. Partially offsetting these headwinds, the company anticipates an improvement in the merchandise margin.
For fiscal 2026, ROST expects comps growth of 3-4%, with total sales anticipated to increase 5-7%. The company projects earnings per share of $7.02-$7.36 compared with $6.61 in fiscal 2025. Assuming comps perform in line with its outlook, the company expects the operating margin to improve to 12-12.3% from the 11.9% reported in fiscal 2025. This projection reflects anticipated gains in merchandise margin and lower distribution costs throughout the year.

TJX Hits $60B Sales Milestone in FY26: What Fuels Long-Term Growth?

A month has gone by since the last earnings report for TJX (TJX). Shares have lost about 0.7% in that time frame, outperforming the S&P 500.

The TJX Companies’ earnings per share (EPS) were $1.43, up 16% from the year-ago quarter. The metric also beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.38 per share.
Net sales came in at $17,743 million, registering an increase of 9% year over year and surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $17,453 million.
In the Marmaxx (the United States) division, the company’s net sales were $10,655 million, up 7% year over year. Net sales amounted to $3,093 million, up 8% year over year, in the HomeGoods (the United States) division. TJX Canada’s net sales were $1,612 million, up 11% from the figure reported in the year-ago period. TJX International’s (Europe & Australia) net sales were $2,383 million, up 15% year over year.
The company witnessed a 5% jump in consolidated comparable store sales, supported by strong performance in every division. Comparable store sales rose 5% at Marmaxx (the United States), 6% at HomeGoods (the United States), 7% at TJX Canada and 4% at TJX International (Europe & Australia).
The TJX Companies’ adjusted pretax profit margin was 12.2%, up 0.6 percentage points from the year-ago quarter’s level. The increase is driven by lower-than-expected inventory shrink expenses and operating leverage from stronger-than-planned sales. These gains were partially offset by elevated incentive compensation accruals.
The adjusted gross profit margin was 31.1%, up 0.6 percentage points year over year, mainly driven by an elevated merchandise margin and expense leverage on strong sales growth. These gains were partially offset by unfavorable inventory hedges.
The company’s adjusted selling, general and administrative costs, as a percent of sales, were 19.1%, a 0.1 percentage point decrease.
TJX’s Financial Health Snapshot
In fiscal 2026, the company increased its total store count by 129, reaching 5,214.
The TJX Companies ended the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $6.2 billion, long-term debt of $1.9 billion and shareholders’ equity of $10.2 billion. It generated an operating cash flow of $6.9 billion in fiscal 2026.
In the fiscal fourth quarter, the company returned $1.26 billion to shareholders, including $784 million used to repurchase 5.1 million of its shares and $472 million paid in dividends. For fiscal 2026, the company returned a total of $4.3 billion to its shareholders, repurchasing 18.5 million shares for $2.5 billion and distributing $1.8 billion in dividends. The company announced its intention to increase the regular quarterly dividend on its common stock to 48 cents per share. The dividend is expected to be declared in March and paid in June 2026, representing a 13% increase over the most recent quarterly dividend.
It also announced plans to repurchase approximately $2.50 billion to $2.75 billion of TJX stock in the fiscal year ending Jan. 30, 2027. With $1.1 billion remaining under its existing authorization at the end of fiscal 2026, the board approved a new stock repurchase program authorizing up to an additional $3 billion in share repurchases from time to time.
What to Expect From TJX Moving Forward?
For fiscal 2027, the company projects consolidated comparable sales growth of 2% to 3%, a pretax profit margin of 11.7% to 11.8% and earnings per share in the range of $4.93 to $5.02.
For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, the company expects consolidated comparable sales to increase 2% to 3%, a pretax profit margin in the range of 10.3% to 10.4% and earnings per share of 97 cents to 99 cents.
