CEO Michael Fiddelke just started his reign in January, and he's not phoning it in. He's targeting four areas for improvement:
Merchandising authority
Elevating and differentiating the shopping experience
Advancing technology
Investing in Target's teams and communities
It's not just aspirational rhetoric. The retailer is targeting $2 billion in incremental spending on store renovations and operational improvements. Target's guidance calls for net sales rising 2% this year, a figure that may seem unimpressive until you consider that it has had three consecutive fiscal years of slight top-line declines. Net sales were positive in February -- the first month of the new fiscal year -- so Target is already off to a strong start before the 10-figure turnaround strategy gets going.
It continues with a beating drum of dividends
Target stock may not seem like royalty in recent years, but it does wear a crown. Target is a Dividend King, boosting its quarterly distributions for 54 consecutive years. And there's a good chance that this streak will be at 64 years come 2036.
You can argue that rising gas prices, the war in Iran, and inevitable economic headwinds in the next decade will challenge its stay on the payout throne. But have you seen what Target has been through in the last 54 years?

The stock is trading at less than 16 times the midpoint of this year's earnings guidance, a deep discount to the country's largest retailer. Sales won't jump fivefold in the next five years. They don't have to. Widening profitability and accelerating sales will lead to the market gladly paying a market premium for Target again.

The company's new CEO is making improvements to stores and the overall customer experience
Michael Fiddelke became CEO of Target on Feb. 1, taking over from Brian Cornell. And as a long-term veteran of Target, Fiddelke has many ideas for how to make the business better. The company is in the midst of remodeling 130 stores, launching next-day delivery in 20 new markets, and it's also planning to enhance the digital experience with the help of artificial intelligence.
These may appear to be small, incremental moves for the company, but they can make its stores more appealing to customers, especially the new store layouts, which are a hit with shoppers -- 92% of whom say they are "highly satisfied" with the experience. The company has been attempting to offer more of a one-stop shopping experience with the new layouts and by partnering with Starbucks and CVS Health.
The stock has already been off to a strong start to 2026, and has more room to run
Year to date, shares of Target are up around 33%. However, on a five-year basis, the retail stock is still down 37%. Target's stock may be trading near its 52-week high, but its price-to-earnings multiple remains modest at 16. By comparison, Walmart trades at 47 times its earnings.
Target looks due for more of a rally as the investments it's making into enhancing its stores and adding value for consumers could pay off significantly. The stock has taken a brutal beating in recent years, but it can provide investors with excellent value today. Plus, it also has a high-yielding dividend that pays 3.5%, giving you plenty of incentive to just buy and hold.

Walmart Inc. WMT is increasingly evolving from a traditional retail operator into a multi-engine profit platform, with its latest quarter reinforcing how diversified income streams are reshaping the company’s earnings profile.
At a fundamental level, the shift is visible in the way profits are growing faster than sales. Fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 revenues rose 5.6% to $190.7 billion, while adjusted operating income climbed 10.5% at constant currency, reflecting stronger contribution from higher-margin businesses alongside core retail. Global e-commerce sales surged 24%, continuing to scale as a key growth driver.
What stands out is the changing composition of profits. Advertising and membership income are emerging as meaningful contributors, with advertising up 37% globally and Walmart Connect in the United States growing 41%. Membership fee income increased 15.1% worldwide. Together, these streams now account for a significant share of operating income, highlighting a clear shift toward recurring and margin-accretive revenue sources.
This diversification is supported by the broader omnichannel ecosystem. E-commerce growth remains robust across segments, including 27% in Walmart U.S., 17% internationally and 23% at Sam’s Club. At the same time, improved e-commerce economics, better inventory management and disciplined cost control are helping expand margins, enabling profits to outpace sales growth for the third consecutive year.
The underlying takeaway is that Walmart’s resilience is no longer tied solely to volume-driven retail performance. Instead, a more balanced mix of advertising, memberships, marketplace and digital fulfillment is strengthening earnings stability. This evolving structure positions the company to better absorb external pressures while sustaining profit growth through multiple levers.
What Do the Latest Metrics Say About Walmart?
Walmart, which competes with Costco Wholesale Corporation COST and Target Corporation TGT, has seen its shares rally 36.4% over the past year compared with the industry’s 34.1% growth. Shares of Costco and Target have gained 3.3% and 34.1%, respectively, in the aforementioned period.

From a valuation standpoint, Walmart's forward 12-month price-to-earnings ratio stands at 43.7, higher than the industry’s 39.7. The company is trading at a premium to Target (with a forward 12-month P/E ratio of 15.9) while trading at a discount to Costco (46.72).

Walmart Builds Diversified Profit Streams: Is Resilience Strengthening?

It's easy to see the attraction to Conagra Brands (NYSE: CAG) these days. Income investor jaws will drop at the 9.4% yield. It's a name you know, and since the packaged goods behemoth falls into the consumer defensive category, some might think it's a safe way to score a massive quarterly distribution.
This could be a big mistake. Let's start with the payout. A 9.4% dividend may seem nice to have collected over the past year, but the stock has plummeted 42% in that time. Suddenly, it's not the bargain moneymaker you thought it would be. This high-yielding stock hit a 17-year low this month.

Conagra has problems. Revenue is declining for the third fiscal year in a row. Its operating profit is sliding substantially for the second consecutive fiscal year. Conagra has taken nine-figure goodwill impairment hits in three of the last four years. This is not a good place to be. May I suggest you aim elsewhere for a dividend stock?
Right on target
Target (NYSE: TGT) is still in the middle of a turnaround, but the market likes what it sees. Target stock has risen 35%, as a new CEO is injecting enthusiasm in the investing community. Conagra has a new leader coming in June, but that will be a trickier situation to remedy.
Inflationary pressures are weighing on both businesses, but Conagra doesn't have the pricing elasticity to pass it along to its customers. Its trailing gross margin is at a 14-year low. Target has seen its gross margin improve in two of the last three fiscal years.
Target is only yielding 3.5%, but that's comparable to what the top-yielding money market funds are paying these days. It's also good for the money. It has boosted its dividend for 54 consecutive years, making it a Dividend King. Conagra stopped hiking its dividend in 2023, and just keeping the current distribution going will be a challenge.
Conagra will barely be able to cover this year's $1.40 a share in distributions with the $1.70 per share that analysts see it earning. Target has a more reasonable payout ratio of 58% based on the midpoint of its bottom-line guidance for this year.
A big Conagra problem right now is GLP-1s and other weight loss drug breakthroughs leaving consumers less hungry. In short, slim Jim isn't going through as many of Conagra's Slim Jims. Target will be just fine. It also sells food, but slimming Target shoppers may also have to update their wardrobe to new sizes in the new normal.
Target is clicking again. It's one of just three S&P 500 stocks with yields above 3% that have risen by at least 30% this year. Conagra is going the other way. If you want to go in the right direction, pay attention to the yield signs.

Forget This 9.4% Yielding Dividend Stock: 1 Rock‑Solid Income Stock That's Much Safer

Imposing tariffs on U.S. trade partners was a signature economic policy of President Trump's first year in power. But in February, in a momentous decision, the Supreme Court rejected the administration's argument that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act authorizes the White House to impose tariffs.

A major consequence of that decision was that the federal government must refund the $166 billion or so it collected from tariffs.
The question now is, which stocks will benefit the most from those refunds?
Because importers paid the tariffs, companies that rely heavily on foreign goods stand to receive the largest refunds. That essentially means blue chip retailers.
Walmart leads the pack on expected refunds
So it's no surprise that Walmart (NASDAQ: WMT) -- the largest U.S. retailer , which relies on imports for about a third of its merchandise -- will benefit the most.
According to an April 10 report by Citi, Walmart's refund from the Trump tariffs will be about $10.2 billion. That's not an insignificant figure, though it's relatively modest compared to the company's revenue, which was about $713 billion last year.
Another giant retailer, Target (NYSE: TGT), is second on the refund list. Citi estimates its refund at $2.2 billion. The company imports about half of its merchandise.
Next on the list, with an estimated $1 billion refund, is Nike (NYSE: NKE). The footwear and clothing behemoth sources the vast majority of its footwear in Asia, particularly Vietnam, Indonesia, and China.
Kohl's (NYSE: KSS) will get back $550 million from the tariffs it paid. Home improvement chain Home Depot (NYSE: HD) will see a similar amount – Citi estimates it at $540 million.
Gap (NYSE: GAP) is due about $400 million, and Macy's (NYSE: M) will get $320 million back.
In all, there were more than 330,000 importers that paid duties on Trump's tariffs.
For companies that paid major tariffs over the past year, refunds could provide a one-time boost to revenue and earnings in the coming quarters.
Yet it may take the government a while to process those refunds. Earlier this month, Walmart CFO John David Rainey said the company doesn't expect the refunds to happen quickly, as the process may be cumbersome. He also noted that any refund Walmart gets would be recognized as earnings from an accounting standpoint. The company reported adjusted operating income of about $8.7 in its fiscal fourth quarter, so a $10 billion refund is certainly significant compared to earnings.
While the refunds are good news for these companies and their shareholders, there remains the thorny fact that many of these retailers passed the tariff cost increases on to customers via higher prices. So, some of them may face lawsuits from customers seeking to recover those funds.
And President Trump has not given up on tariffs, despite the Supreme Court decision. The White House has said it will seek to establish new tariffs under different laws that might pass muster under court rulings.

(RTTNews) - Target Corp. (TGT), a mass-market retail company, on Tuesday, announced a limited-time collaboration with Parke to launch a new style collection featuring women's apparel and accessories.
The nearly 60-piece Parke x Target collection will be available from April 25 on Target.com and in select stores, with most items priced under $40.
The collection includes ready-to-wear, denim, accessories, and Parke's first swimwear line.
The company said the partnership aims to expand access to Parke's community-driven designs at an affordable price point.
In the pre-market trading, Target Corp is 0.78% lesser at $129.16 on the New York Stock Exchange.

That pricing power can look different, depending on the retailer. For some, it may be keeping the prices of the products on their shelves low compared to competitors, so they can keep their current customers happy. They can also win over new shoppers who are becoming more cost-conscious and are trying to stretch their budgets further.

For other retailers, it may be having the ability to raise prices without alienating or losing a significant amount of their customers. They each have different operations, but both Walmart (NASDAQ: WMT) and Ulta Beauty (NASDAQ: ULTA) have their own special pricing power.
Walmart's size gives it negotiating power
Walmart is built on offering low prices, and it can offer them because of its incredible reach. Walmart operates more than 10,900 stores and clubs, including more than 3,500 U.S. Walmart Supercenters. The company says that each week, more than 280 million people visit its stores and websites, and even more people can visit its locations soon, with 20 new stores expected to open between now and the start of 2027.
With that kind of power, Walmart can dictate prices to suppliers. If the suppliers want to get on Walmart's shelves and on its website, then they need to play by its rules or miss out on reaching those millions of customers each week.
Another piece of sneaky pricing power Walmart has is through selling its own products. It sets those prices low, so suppliers with similar products in Walmart's stores have to keep their own prices in check to avoid losing market share. Those low prices are also becoming more appealing to higher-income shoppers, as everyone is looking for deals wherever they can be found.
"The majority of our share gains came from households making more than $100,000," CEO John Furner said in the company's fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 earnings call.
For value investors, Walmart looks pricier than it has been in recent quarters, with a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 42.3. Expectations are high, but Walmart has a few revenue sources to grow into its value, thanks to a budding ad business and its Walmart+ membership offering.
A specialized retail in a massive market
Ulta Beauty is a specialized retailer in the beauty sector, selling hair care products, fragrances, and cosmetics across 1,500 stores. It also has strong positioning in a crowded space, with an estimated 9% market share of the U.S. beauty market in 2024 that was valued at $118 billion.
It may not initially seem like a company with pricing power, but Ulta has a loyal customer base. To that point, the company's customers are unlikely to massively revolt if it raises prices. Pushback is also offset by it offering a mix of luxury and mass-market products, giving customers more options to fit into their budgets.
It has millions of members in its loyalty program, with those members accounting for nearly all of Ulta's sales. The company is now expanding to build that customer base beyond the U.S. with its recent international expansion. It opened its first store in Mexico and its first store in the Middle East in 2025.
So far this year, Ulta has been in a rough stretch. Shares are down as the company navigates an increasingly competitive market. Outside of international expansion through its own stores, it will need to seek new partnerships to attract more clients. Ulta launched a partnership with Target in 2021, but it will conclude this August.
Between the two, I see Walmart as the stronger retail stock, given its size, multiple revenue generators, and a dividend payout. That said, each company has its own pricing power and growth opportunities, making both retailers worth further consideration as potential investments.

Looking at options trading activity among components of the S&P 500 index, there is noteworthy activity today in Target Corp (Symbol: TGT), where a total volume of 24,740 contracts has been traded thus far today, a contract volume which is representative of approximately 2.5 million underlying shares (given that every 1 contract represents 100 underlying shares). That number works out to 44.2% of TGT's average daily trading volume over the past month, of 5.6 million shares. Particularly high volume was seen for the $120 strike call option expiring June 18, 2026, with 1,550 contracts trading so far today, representing approximately 155,000 underlying shares of TGT. Many investors feel nervous about the current investing environment, and the hesitation is understandable. Oil prices have spiked, and supply chains have broken down amid conflict in the Middle East. Also, the Shiller P/E ratio has risen to 40, a level near historical highs.
Fortunately, if the market is good at delivering one thing, it is opportunity, and that applies even under difficult conditions. That might motivate investors to seek stocks that can succeed in any environment, and these three names likely fit the bill.

1. Domino's Pizza
Domino's Pizza (NASDAQ: DPZ) has emerged as an unexpected winner among consumer discretionary stocks. Investors may recall that it was one of the few stocks to rise during the COVID-19 pandemic, as the pizza chain's order and delivery model was well-suited for ordering out.
Much of that growth pulled back as lockdowns ended. However, Domino's has differentiated itself in more ways than just delivery. It utilizes "fortressing," opening up a large number of stores in nearby areas. Although most companies would call that practice cannibalizing, Domino's has built a competitive advantage by shortening delivery times.
Additionally, it capitalizes on technology, and not just through its app and websites. Instead, customers can order on platforms varying from car dashboards to Apple Watches, taking advantage of impulse shoppers.
Admittedly, this is more of a safety play, as revenue increased by 5% in 2025, a time when net income grew by only 3% amid rising expenses.
Nonetheless, its $7.96 per share annual dividend increased by 15% last year, a testament to its success. Also, the yield of 2.2% is well above the 1.1% average for the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC).
Finally, Domino's P/E ratio of 21 is at multiyear lows, and considering that $369 buys one share, investors can buy a starter position cheaply.
2. Clorox
Clorox (NYSE: CLX) is a consumer staples conglomerate consisting of its flagship bleach product along with Hidden Valley salad dressing, Kingsford charcoal, Burt's Bees personal care products, and other brands.
Like Domino's, it benefited from the pandemic as the population became obsessed with cleanliness. That impulse faded as pandemic-related fear receded, causing the stock price to fall.
Unfortunately, issues such as a major cyberattack in 2023 and a change in customer relationship management (CRM) systems led to a significant sales decline. That long-term drop means that Clorox stock now sells at a discount of more than 55% from its all-time high in 2021.
Indeed, the fact that net sales declined by 10% yearly in the first half of fiscal 2026 (ended Dec. 31, 2025) shows that the struggles continue. Still, analysts expect that sales decline to come in at 6% for the fiscal year before net sales rebound by 13% in fiscal 2027.
Moreover, even though profits fell 19% annually to $237 million in the first half of fiscal 2026, the situation is likely not that bleak.
All this makes Clorox a relatively safe, undervalued dividend stock. The payout, which has risen annually for decades, is now $4.96 per share, a yield of 4.7%. When also considering the 17 P/E ratio, investors could have a lucrative growth and income stock by buying three shares for $312.
3. Target
Target's (NYSE: TGT) struggles may outweigh absurd cheapness in the minds of some investors. Net sales have declined for years, and challenges such as chronically high inventories, messy stores, and controversial political decisions alienated many shoppers.
However, former COO Michael Fiddelke took over as CEO in February and has set out to revive the brand. He pledged to invest $5 billion in improving stores and supply chains and incorporating more technology.
Target's turnaround has a high chance of succeeding. More than 75% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Target store, making it well-positioned for omnichannel selling. It could also benefit by restoring its reputation as an upscale discounter that built its brand.
Admittedly, this comeback remains somewhat speculative. Target's net sales fell 2% in 2025, and profits fell 9% to $3.7 billion amid rising depreciation costs.
Nonetheless, the company forecasts a 2% net sales increase in 2026, a sign that conditions may have begun to improve. Also, its troubles have not stopped it from maintaining a 54-year streak of payout hikes, making it a Dividend King. That dividend, which is now $4.56 per share yearly, yields 3.8%.
Finally, investors can buy this stock for 15 times earnings, meaning a purchase of 2.7 shares for $320 could deliver market-beating returns as conditions improve.
