Ahead of the market's open this Friday, the company's share price had fallen 11.3% from its level at the previous week's market close. Over the same stretch, the S&P 500 was down 1.2%, and the Nasdaq Composite was down 2.4%.
Reddit and other tech stocks have gotten hit with big pullbacks amid an uptick in concerns that valuations for artificial intelligence (AI) stocks could be in a bubble. The company's share price has also been under pressure due to bearish inflation indicators.

New AI research from MIT has hurt Reddit stock
On Tuesday, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) published research that resulted in significant selling pressures for AI stocks. According to the new study published by the famous tech-research university, 95% of companies that have invested in integrating generative AI into their business operations have yet to see any profitability gains.
The research raised concerns that valuations for AI stocks could be in a bubble, and it was a significant factor in pullbacks for many companies with exposure to the artificial intelligence market this week. Reddit stock is still up 107% over the last three months, and sales momentum connected to the company's licensing of data for AI models has been a driving factor in the rally.
Inflation concerns are back in focus
After the Bureau of Labor Statistics published July Producer Price Index data last week that showed levels of inflation that were much hotter than expected, some investors started bracing for the possibility that higher inflation would start showing up in the consumer side of the economy. Worrying indicators along those lines showed up in second-quarter earnings reports from Home Depot and Target this week.
Home Depot said that it will be raising some prices due to tariffs, and Target said that it was also seeing pricing pressures and weak consumer spending due to tariffs. If consumer-facing inflation starts accelerating, the Federal Reserve may be wary about delivering substantial cuts for interest rates. Such developments could put significant dents in valuations for Reddit and other growth stocks.

Why Reddit Stock Is Plummeting This Week

The S&P 500 experienced its longest losing streak of 2025, dropping for five consecutive trading days as of Thursday. It is also the first time this year that the index has endured such a drop, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
The S&P 500 declined 1.5% over the past five sessions, pressured by selling in big tech names as investors rotated away from the tech sector on AI bubble fears and overvaluation concerns. This downturn was exacerbated by disappointing Target TGT and Walmart WMT earnings, renewed tariff impacts and fading hopes of a Fed rate cut in September (read: Value Outshines Growth: 5 ETF Winners Over the Past Week).
Ahead of Powell's speech, CME Group's FedWatch Tool is currently indicating a 73.6% chance that the Fed will lower rates by a quarter point next month, down from 92.1% a week ago.
The market sell-off has fueled a rally in inverse single-stock ETFs. Inverse single-stock ETFs are designed to deliver the opposite daily return of a specific company’s stock by using derivatives. For example, if the underlying stock drops 1% in a day, the inverse ETF targeting that stock would ideally increase about 1%.
Some ETFs offer leveraged exposure, such as -2x or -3x, which attempt to deliver two or three times the inverse of the stock’s daily move. This allows investors to gain inverse exposure to a particular stock without having to sell the stock directly.

Defiance Daily Target 2X Short PLTR ETF (PLTZ) – Up 30.6%

Defiance Daily Target 2X Short SMCI ETF seeks daily inverse investment results of two times the performance of Super Micro Computer SMCI. Shares of SMCI slumped 7% in the same time frame.
Risks of Investing in Inverse Single-Stock ETFs
While inverse single-stock ETFs surge amid the sell-off, they come with significant risks due to their lack of diversification and exposure to the volatility of a single stock. They are typically more suited for experienced investors who understand and are willing to accept these risks. Here are some of the downsides of these ETFs:
Daily Reset and Compounding Risks: The performance of inverse ETFs could vary significantly from the actual performance of their underlying stock over a longer period when compared to a shorter period (such as weeks or months). These funds run the risk of huge losses in fluctuating or seesawing markets.
Risk of Significant Losses: As the ETF is tied to a single stock, a surprise rally in the company’s shares can quickly erode gains and generate steep losses for inverse ETF holders.
High Costs: Liquidity can be a big problem, as it can make the products more expensive than they appear. Expense ratios for inverse single-stock ETFs are often significantly higher than those of traditional ETFs. Big Tech Woes Power Surge in Inverse Single-Stock ETFs

Wall Street closed lower on Thursday, pulled down by utilities and consumer stocks. Investors continued to grow further cautious, worried that Fed chair Jerome Powell might deliver hawkish comments on Friday that could fuel market volatility. Unexpectedly high initial jobless claims reported for the week also weighed on the markets. All three benchmark indexes closed in the red.
How Did the Benchmarks Perform?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) fell 0.3%, or 152.81 points, to close at 44,785.50. Twenty-three components of the 30-stock index ended in negative territory, while seven ended in positive.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slid 72.54 points, or 0.3%, to close at 21,100.31.
The S&P 500 lost 25.61 points, or 0.4%, to close at 6,370.17. Nine of the 11 broad sectors of the benchmark index closed in the red. The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR (XLP), the Utilities Select Sector SPDR (XLU) and the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR (XLY) declined 0.9%, 0.7% and 0.6%, respectively, while the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) advanced 0.7%.
The fear gauge CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) increased 5.8% to 16.60. A total of 12.28 billion shares were traded on Thursday, lower than the last 20-session average of 17.08 billion. Decliners outnumbered advancers by a 1.6-to-1 ratio on the NYSE.
Jackson Hole Worries Cast a Pall Over Investor Mood
Investor sentiment continued to be cautious on Thursday as Wall Street braced for Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s closely awaited remarks at the Jackson Hole symposium. With the S&P 500 marking its fifth consecutive decline and both the Dow and Nasdaq retreating in the session, markets reflected growing uncertainty about the Fed’s next move.
At the core of the trepidation lies Powell’s much-awaited keynote speech at Jackson Hole, slated for Friday, which carries the potential to reshape expectations for the Fed’s policy path. The anticipation surrounding Powell’s remarks created a tense atmosphere, as traders tried to gauge whether the central bank would signal a firmer commitment to keeping rates higher for longer. Expectations for a September rate cut, once considered almost certain, had eased in recent days as economic data painted a mixed picture. Rising bond yields underscored the shifting mood, pressuring equity markets that had grown reliant on the prospect of monetary easing.
The focus now turns squarely to Powell’s speech, widely seen as the most significant event of the week. Any hint of hawkishness could unsettle equities further, while even neutral commentary might still be interpreted as limiting the scope for aggressive rate cuts this year. With volatility risks elevated, many investors opted to stay on the sidelines, awaiting clarity on whether the Fed will prioritize inflation control or lean toward supporting growth. Utilities and consumer stocks suffered the most in the session.
Walmart Earnings Miss Weighs on the Retail Sector
Retail giant Walmart Inc.’s WMT second-quarter fiscal 2026 earnings of 68 cents per share jumped 1.5% from the year-ago period’s 67 cents, but missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 73 cents. The company’s earnings performance dragged the retail sector lower with it and flagged rising tariff-related costs. Its stocks fell 4.5% in the session.

Economic Data
For the week ended Aug. 16, initial jobless claims came in at 235,000, an increase of 11,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 224,000. The 4-week moving average was 226,250, an increase of 4,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 221,750.
Continuing claims for the week ending Aug. 9 were 1,972,000, an increase of 30,000 from the previous week's revised level. This is its highest level since Nov. 6, 2021 when it was 2,041,000. The previous week's level was revised down by 11,000 from 1,953,000 to 1,942,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,954,500, an increase of 6,500 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised down by 2,750 from 1,950,750 to 1,948,000.
Per the National Association of Realtors, existing home sales for July increased to 4.01 million units. The number for June remained unrevised at 3.93 million units.

The biggest news from retailer Target's (NYSE: TGT) second-quarter earnings report, which arrived on Wednesday, wasn't the 21% plunge in profits (although that was bad). It's what the company is doing about it: hiring a new CEO.
Target's board unanimously appointed Michael Fiddelke to replace current CEO Brian Cornell, who has led the company since 2014. Cornell will officially step down in February.

Here's what this is likely to mean for Target and its stock.
Not a surprise departure
Analysts had been expecting Cornell to step down soon. On top of the company's recent poor performance and PR missteps, his current three-year contract was set to expire in September.
Cornell isn't fully leaving, but transitioning into the role of executive chair of the board of directors, indicating he's not departing on bad terms.
The big surprise wasn't Cornell's departure, it was the identity of his successor.
A company insider
Some analysts were hoping that Target would bring in an outsider who would "shake things up" at Target, much as Cornell himself did in 2014.
Cornell came to Target from PepsiCo's global foods business. He made big investments in Target's online fulfillment, same-day delivery, and curbside pickup capabilities, which paid off during the pandemic lockdowns, sending revenue and share prices soaring.
Fiddelke, on the other hand, is perhaps the ultimate company insider: He's Target's current chief operating officer, its former CFO, and a 20-year company veteran. Target credits him with scaling up the company's supply chain and digital capabilities and spearheading the current push to find efficiencies in the business.
What it means for investors
The choice of Fiddelke to succeed Cornell is seen by some as a decision to "stay the course." That is, focus on existing initiatives to boost same-store traffic and identify cost savings, rather than make big changes.

That's an indication that Wall Street isn't convinced staying the course is the right move for the struggling retailer. Investors who agree may want to hold off on buying shares.

Target CEO Brian Cornell to Step Down. Here's What Investors Need to Know.

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Wednesday closed down by -0.24%, the Dow Jones Industrials Index ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up by +0.04%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed down by -0.58%. September E-mini S&P futures (ESU25) fell -0.29%, and September E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQU25) fell -0.64%.
Stock indexes on Wednesday extended Tuesday's slide, with the S&P 500 falling to a 1.5-week low and the Nasdaq 100 dropping to a 2-week low. The weakness in the Magnificent Seven technology companies and the selloff in chip stocks weighed on the overall market. Also, disappointing corporate news was negative for stocks, as Target fell more than -6% after forecasting a bigger-than-expected decline in full-year sales. Estee Lauder fell more than -3% after forecasting weaker-than-expected 2026 EPS.

Walmart rose more than +1% on Wednesday to keep the Dow Jones Industrials in positive territory. Walmart settled higher on expectations that its Q2 earnings report, which will be released before Thursday's open, will show comparable-store sales coming in ahead of estimates. The consensus is that total Q2 US comparable sales ex-gasoline rose +4.21%.
US MBA mortgage applications fell -1.4% in the week ended August 15, with the purchase mortgage sub-index up +0.1% and the refinancing sub-index down -3.1%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage rose +1 bp to 6.68% from 6.67% in the prior week.
Wednesday's minutes of the July 29-30 FOMC meeting were slightly hawkish and negative for stocks. The minutes showed that most policymakers judged the upside risk to inflation as a greater risk than weaker employment, saying the labor market was "solid" but inflation remained "somewhat elevated."
Diplomatic talks over the war in Ukraine continue to make headway. President Trump is pushing for a summit between Presidents Putin and Zelenskiy soon, and European leaders are discussing a plan to send British and French troops to Ukraine as part of a peace agreement. The outcome of the talks could have macroeconomic implications regarding tariffs and oil prices, and could, of course, have significant consequences for European security.
The focus of the markets this week will be on any new tariff news and signs of progress toward a Ukraine peace deal. On Thursday, weekly initial unemployment claims are expected to climb by +1,000 to 225,000, and the Aug Philadelphia Fed business outlook survey is expected to fall to 6.7 from 15.9 in July. Also, the Aug S&P manufacturing PMI is expected to remain unchanged at 49.8. In addition, Jul existing home sales are expected to fall -0.3% m/m to 3.92 million. On Friday, Fed Chair Powell speaks on the economic outlook at the Federal Reserve's annual symposium at Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Regarding tariffs, President Trump widened steel and aluminum tariffs to include more than 400 consumer items that contain the metals, such as motorcycles, auto parts, furniture components, and tableware. The change went into effect on Monday and did not exclude goods already in transit. Last Friday, Mr. Trump said, "I'll be setting tariffs next week and the week after on steel and on, I would say chips – chips and semiconductors, we'll be setting sometime next week, week after." Mr. Trump last week said he planned a 100% tariff on semiconductors but would exempt companies that move chip manufacturing to the US. Mr. Trump also mentioned 200% or 300% tariffs on chips.
In other recent tariff news, Mr. Trump last Tuesday extended the tariff truce with China for another 90 days until November. On August 6, Mr. Trump announced that he will double tariffs on US imports from India to 50% from the current 25% tariff, due to India's purchases of Russian oil. On August 5, Mr. Trump said that US tariffs on pharmaceutical imports would be announced "within the next week or so." According to Bloomberg Economics, the average US tariff will rise to 15.2% if rates are implemented as announced, up from 13.3% earlier, and significantly higher than the 2.3% in 2024 before the tariffs were announced.
Federal funds futures prices are discounting the chances for a -25 bp rate cut at 84% at the September 16-17 FOMC meeting, down from 93% last Thursday. The markets are discounting the chances at 55% for a second -25 bp rate cut at the following meeting on October 28-29.
Earnings reports indicate that S&P 500 earnings for Q2 are on track to rise +9.1% y/y, much better than the pre-season expectations of +2.8% y/y and the most in four years, according to Bloomberg Intelligence. With over 93% of S&P 500 firms having reported Q2 earnings, about 83% of companies exceeded profit estimates.
Overseas stock markets on Wednesday settled mixed. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed down -0.20%. China's Shanghai Composite climbed to a new 10-year high and closed up +1.04%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed down -1.51%.
Interest Rates
September 10-year T-notes (ZNU25) on Wednesday closed up +3 ticks, and the 10-year T-note yield fell -1.5 bp to 4.291%. Sep T-notes posted modest gains on Wednesday, supported by weakness in equity markets. Also, falling inflation expectations were supportive of T-notes after the 10-year breakeven inflation rate fell to a 2-week low on Wednesday of 2.350%. T-notes garnered support after the Wall Street Journal reported that President Trump is considering firing Fed Governor Lisa Cook over allegations that she committed mortgage fraud. If Cook is fired or resigns, Mr. Trump could appoint another Fed Governor who favors his lower interest rate policies.
T-notes fell back from their best levels due to weak demand for the Treasury's $16 billion auction of 20-year T-bonds, which showed the bid-to-cover ratio of 2.54, below the 10-auction average of 2.60. Also, Wednesday's hawkish minutes of the July 29-30 FOMC meeting weighed on T-note prices.
European government bond yields on Wednesday moved lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell -3.3 bp to 2.717%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell -6.8 bp to 4.672%.
ECB President Lagarde said the Eurozone economy is likely to see slower growth this quarter, with questions over global trade remaining despite recent trade deals with the US reducing uncertainty.
UK Jul CPI rose +3.8% y/y, stronger than expectations of +3.7% y/y and the fastest pace of increase in 1.5 years. Jul core CPI also rose +3.8% y/y, stronger than expectations of +3.7% y/y.
Swaps are discounting the chances at 7% for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at the September 11 policy meeting.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven stocks were under pressure on Wednesday, weighing on the broader market. Apple (AAPL), Alphabet (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), and Tesla (TSLA) closed down more than -1%. Also, Microsoft (MSFT) closed down -0.79%, Meta Platforms (META) closed down -0.50%, and Nvidia (NVDA) closed down -0.14%.
Weakness in chip stocks is a drag on the overall market. Intel (INTC) closed down more than -6% to lead losers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100, and Micron Technology (MU) closed down more than -3%. Also, ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) closed down more than -2%, and Broadcom (AVGO), Marvell Technology (MRVL), and Lam Research (LRCX) closed down more than -1%.
James Hardie Industries Plc (JHX) closed down more than -34% after reporting its Q2 operating profit sank -29% y/y and said difficult economic conditions continue to weigh on homebuyers after recording the slowest spring season in more than twelve years.
La-Z-Boy (LZB) closed down more than -12% after reporting Q1 comparable sales fell -4% y/y versus -3% y/y, and forecast Q2 sales of $510 million-$530 million, the midpoint below the consensus of $528.5 million.
Target (TGT) closed down more than -6% after forecasting a full-year sales decline of a low single-digit percentage compared to the consensus of a -1.71% decline.
Estee Lauder (EL) closed down more than -3% after forecasting 2026 adjusted EPS of $1.90-$2.10, weaker than the consensus of $2.16.
Avis Budget Group (CAR) closed down more than -5%, CarMax (KMX) closed down more than -2%, and Carvana (CVNA) closed down more than -1% after CNBC reported that Hertz Global Holdings will start selling pre-owned cars on Amazon Autos.
Analog Devices (ADI) closed up more than +6% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q3 revenue of $2.88 billion, better than the consensus of $2.76 billion.
Hertz Global Holdings (HTZ) closed up more than +6% after CNBC reported the company will start selling pre-owned cars on Amazon Autos.
Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (REGN) closed up more than +3% after it said it expects action by the FDA on its multiple regulatory submissions for its Eylea HD product by Q4 of 2025, which is sooner than anticipated, according to BMO Capital Markets.
TJX Cos (TJX) closed up more than +2% after reporting Q3 comparable sales rose +4%, stronger than the consensus of +3.09%, and boosting its 2026 comparable sales forecast to +3% from a previous estimate of +2% to 3%, better than the consensus of +2.87%.
Dayforce (DAY) closed up more than +2% on reports that the company is in advanced talks with Thoma Bravo to be acquired for $70 a share.
Jack Henry & Associates (JKHY) closed up more than +2% after reporting Q4 processing revenue of $264.1 million, above the consensus of $255.3 million.
McCormick & Co. (MKC) closed up more than +1% after JPMorgan Chase double upgraded the stock to overweight from underweight with a price target of $83.

Opendoor Technologies (NASDAQ: OPEN) stock is selling off rapidly in Wednesday's trading. The company's share price had fallen 8.2% as of 12:45 p.m. ET today and had been down as much as 13% at the start of the day's trading.
While there doesn't appear to be any major business-specific news driving the stock pullback, the real estate specialist is losing ground amid concerns about inflation and valuations for artificial intelligence (AI) stocks that are affecting the broader market. Today's sell-off also comes on the heels of a huge pop for the stock over the last week. Opendoor stock sinks on inflation and AI concerns
Growth stocks and speculative investment plays are suffering sell-offs in Wednesday's trading as investors react to unfavorable indicators on inflation and a new report from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that has raised questions about business applications for generative AI.
Following last week's Producer Price Index report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that showed levels of inflation that were much higher than expected, Home Depot and Target issued quarterly reports and commentary this week that seemingly supported the thesis that rising inflation will begin showing up in the consumer economy.
Adding to bearish pressures for stocks, new research from MIT suggests that 95% of businesses are getting no real value from money they have poured into generative AI.
What's next for Opendoor?
The stock recently saw a big surge following news that CEO Carrie Wheeler is stepping down from her position, and another round of bullish commentary from EMJ Capital founder Eric Jackson. The company's share price has seen an incredible rally this year thanks in part to meme-stock momentum and investors betting that the stock could see a Carvana-like rally.
Opendoor stock is still down 91% from the high it hit in 2021 and still has explosive potential, but investors should understand that the company looks like a very high-risk play.

Reddit stock falls after Walmart's guidance highlights macroeconomic risk
Walmart published its fourth-quarter earnings results before the market opened this morning and posted sales and earnings for the period that topped Wall Street's forecasts. Unfortunately, the company paired the strong Q4 print with forward revenue guidance that raised concerns about the health of the economy and triggered sell-offs for the broader market.
After recording annual sales growth of 5.6% in its last fiscal year, Walmart expects growth to decelerate to between 3% and 4% this year. While this may not have any immediate implications for Reddit's business, it could be saying something about the overall state of the U.S. consumer economy. In turn, that could translate to weaker ad revenue for the social media company. It could also cause investors to assign lower valuation multiples to Reddit stock.
What does X's latest funding round say about Reddit?
According to recent reports, X is looking to raise capital by selling stakes valuing the company at $44 billion -- the same price that Tesla CEO Elon Musk acquired the business at in 2022. After today's pullback, Reddit has a market capitalization of roughly $31 billion.
Meanwhile, X is broadly believed to have significantly more active users than Reddit. And while Reddit has recently seen some strong sales thanks to licensing its data for the training of artificial intelligence (AI) models, its platform's core business has historically monetized at lower levels per user. That doesn't mean that Reddit stock is necessarily a bad long-term buy, but investors may be looking at the valuation for X and having some concerns.

Why Reddit Stock Is Plummeting Today

Shares of retail giant Target (NYSE: TGT) are falling on Wednesday, down 8.1% as of 10:30 a.m. ET.
Target reported second-quarter earnings this morning that actually came in ahead of expectations. However, the retailer continued to show revenue and profit declines.

Perhaps of larger importance, CEO Brian Cornell announced his retirement, and the company is promoting Chief Operating Officer Michael Fiddelke to the CEO role. Investors apparently didn't love the news, perhaps anticipating it will lead to more of the same direction for the struggling retailer.
Can Target stop share losses?
In the second quarter, Target's revenue fell 0.9% to $25.2 billion, while earnings per share declined a more severe 20.2% to $2.05 as tariffs hit margins. While revenue declines and margin compression certainly weren't ideal, those figures actually came in ahead of expectations. Same-store sales actually improved from a 3.8% decline in the first quarter to a 1.9% decline in Q2, fueled by 4.3% growth in digital sales.
Given the improving trends, it might have seemed odd the stock was down so much. This could be because Cornell is well regarded in the business, or because investors would have preferred an outside appointment. Amid the rapid post-pandemic inflation, Target has lost some share to lower-cost Walmart (NYSE: WMT) and Costco (NASDAQ: COST), so some investors may have wanted an outsider with a fresh vision.
Target's stock is getting interesting
Shares are trading at just 10.5 times trailing earnings with a 4.3% dividend yield. Management is forecasting a slight earnings decline this year, to between $7 and $9, but even the $8 midpoint would put shares at just around 12 times this year's adjusted earnings.
That's a very low valuation, especially in today's relatively expensive market. Therefore, value investors may wish to dig into Target's current turnaround efforts and Fiddelke's background.
