AT&T Inc. provides telecommunications and technology services worldwide. The company operates through two segments, Communications and Latin America. The Communications segment offers wireless voice and data communications services; and sells handsets, wireless data cards, wireless computing devices, carrying cases/protective covers, and wireless chargers through its own company-owned stores, agents, and third-party retail stores. It also provides Virtual Private Networks, AT&T Dedicated Internet, Ethernet, data services, cloud solutions, outsourcing, and managed professional services, as well as customer premises equipment for multinational corporations, small and mid-sized businesses, governmental, and wholesale customers. In addition, this segment offers broadband services, including fiber connections, legacy telephony voice communication services, and other VoIP services and equipment to residential customers. This segment markets its communications services and products under the AT&T, AT&T Business, Cricket, AT&T PREPAID, and AT&T Fiber brand names. The Latin America segment provides postpaid and prepaid wireless services in Mexico under the AT&T and Unefon brand names, as well as sells smartphones through its owned stores, agents and third-party retail stores. The company was formerly known as SBC Communications Inc. and changed its name to AT&T Inc. in 2005. AT&T Inc. was incorporated in 1983 and is based in Dallas, Texas.

Telecom stocks, thus, can make for ideal options to consider given that their businesses provide customers with necessary services and they generate a great deal of recurring income.
Two of the biggest names in telecom are AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ). They also are among the most compelling dividend stocks to consider, with both offering fairly high yields. But which one is the better option for dividend investors today?

Verizon's yield is higher at 6%
What inevitably draws the most attention from investors when it comes to dividends is the overall yield, and Verizon has an edge here. It pays 6%, which is more than five times the S&P 500 average of just 1.1%. AT&T also offers a fairly high yield at 4.3%, but it is notably lower than Verizon's payout.
But investors often worry that high yields aren't sustainable, which is why stocks with high payouts don't necessarily rise in value. In fact, that's one of the reasons Verizon's yield is high -- its share price has declined 16% over the past five years. When that happens, its yield rises (assuming, of course, the dividend remains intact). Meanwhile, AT&T stock has risen by 11% over that same time frame.
What's important to consider is the payout ratio, which helps to gauge just how safe a dividend is, regardless of the actual yield. AT&T is paying out approximately 37% of its earnings as dividends, while Verizon's payout ratio is around 67%. AT&T has more of a buffer, but both payouts look to be safe.
AT&T hasn't raised its dividend for several years
With a low payout ratio, the nagging question about AT&T stock is whether it might raise its dividend anytime soon. It hasn't increased its payout since 2020. That means that over time, inflation has been chipping away at the dividend income AT&T has provided its shareholders with, especially with inflation being particularly high in recent years.
Verizon, on the other hand, has prided itself on continuously growing its dividend. Earlier this year, it increased its dividend by 2.5%. And over the past five years, its quarterly dividend has risen by nearly 13%. That's not terribly impressive, as inflation has been higher over that stretch, but at the very least, it has given investors some incentive to buy and hold.
Which business is in better shape today?
Another key factor to consider when analyzing dividend stocks is the strength of their underlying businesses. A yield can look impressive, but if a company isn't going in the right direction, there may be a dividend cut or suspension looming around the corner.
Verizon recently posted its first-quarter earnings for 2026, which were encouraging. The telecom company boasted of its postpaid phone net adds, which it says were positive in Q1 for the first time since 2013. In light of its strong results, the company raised its guidance for the year and expects that for 2026, its adjusted per-share earnings will rise between 5% and 6%.
AT&T has also been doing well, as in its Q1 results, revenue was up 2.9% and totaled $31.5 billion. Its free cash flow did, however, fall from $3.1 billion to $2.5 billion, as the company has been investing more in its fiber business.
Overall, both businesses appear to be doing well, and it's hard to say that one is in much better shape than the other.
Which dividend stock is the better buy?
Verizon's stock has performed better since the start of this year, rising by 16% while AT&T's stock is up a more modest 5%. But remember, Verizon's been struggling for a while now, and it's just now recovering after showing signs of progress earlier in the year with encouraging quarterly results. Verizon trades at just under 10 times its expected future earnings (based on analyst expectations), whereas AT&T is at a multiple of just over 11.
All things considered, I'd go with Verizon today. Its yield is slightly higher, and although the growth in its dividend has been modest in recent years, it has at least shown a willingness to grow its payout. And with a slightly lower valuation, that clinches it. Both of these stocks are good options if you want dividend income, but I think Verizon is a more compelling buy right now.

Verizon Communications vs. AT&T: What's the Better Dividend Stock to Buy Right Now?

Investors looking for income from their portfolio can always appreciate a reliable dividend-paying business. Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) is one of those companies. And more recently, it's been not only rewarding shareholders with a high dividend yield but also with a surging stock price. The stock is up more than 15% year to date, and the company's latest quarterly results reinforced the bull case as new CEO Dan Schulman is helping the company reaccelerate its business and reward shareholders with even more capital as Verizon started executing on an aggressive share repurchase program.

Earnings growth accelerates
At first glance, Verizon's results may look unimpressive. Revenue grew just 2.9% year over year to $34.4 billion.
But what's impressive is that the company is demonstrating operating leverage. Verizon's net income rose at a faster rate than revenue, increasing 3.3% year over year. And its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) increased 6.7% year over year to $13.4 billion.
Verizon delivered $1.28 in non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings per share. This beat analysts' estimates and marked the strongest adjusted earnings-per-share growth rate the company has posted in years. And driving home how the company is making progress on profitability, Verizon's adjusted earnings per share rose 7.6% year over year, marking the company's best quarterly year-over-year growth rate since 2021.
"Our first quarter financial results show our disciplined execution is directly translating into operating leverage," explained Verizon chief financial officer Tony Skiadas during the company's first-quarter earnings call. "We are driving financial growth and strong free cash flow even as we undergo a transitional year for revenue.
This earnings momentum came with an important customer milestone. Verizon reported 55,000 total postpaid phone net additions in the first quarter of 2026 -- its first positive first-quarter result on this metric since 2013. That is a sharp reversal from the year-ago period, when postpaid phone net losses totaled 289,000, and suggests the company's efforts to reduce churn and improve customer economics may be working.
Impressive guidance
Management's full-year outlook added to the case that Verizon's turnaround has some traction. Verizon raised its 2026 adjusted earnings-per-share guidance to $4.95 to $4.99, representing year-over-year growth of 5% to 6%. This is a nice uptick from management's previous guidance for 4% to 5% growth.
And moving down to the cash flow that supports the company's dividend, Verizon maintained its outlook for free cash flow of at least $21.5 billion -- a huge figure for a company with a market capitalization of $197 billion.
A mouth-watering capital return program
And speaking of the company's dividend, Schulman noted that Verizon has an "ironclad commitment," so investors should be able to count on it.
Further, this dividend is growing. The company's latest increase was a 2.5% boost, marking Verizon's 20th consecutive year of dividend increases.
Even more, the company's dividend isn't Verizon's only shareholder-return lever anymore. Verizon completed $2.5 billion in share repurchases in the first quarter and remains on track to repurchase at least $3 billion for the full year. The buyback reflects management's "conviction in the value of the stock at current levels," said Skiadas during the company's earnings call.
A cheap valuation
Best of all, the stock is cheap.
Shares currently trade at just 10 times the midpoint of management's 2026 adjusted earnings-per-share guidance.
There are risks, of course. Verizon's debt load is still substantial, and the Frontier acquisition pushed net unsecured debt higher in the quarter. Further, competition from AT&T and T-Mobile remains intense.
But Verizon's lucrative dividend helps offset these risks, as investors are compensated to hold shares while the company dukes it out in the intensely competitive wireless carrier market. In addition, the company's strong quarterly results arguably bolster the bull case.

AT&T's free cash declined by nearly 20% last quarter
On April 22, AT&T reported its first-quarter results for 2026, covering the first three months of the year. While revenue looked strong, rising by nearly 3% to $31.5 billion, free cash flow looked a bit concerning. It totaled $2.5 billion for the quarter, which was a sharp decrease from the $3.1 billion it generated in the same period last year.
Free cash flow is the money a company generates from its day-to-day operations after accounting for capital expenditures. AT&T says a key reason its free cash was lower this past quarter was its ramping up of fiber deployment. This can be a troubling sign because if a company expects to spend more on capital projects and expansion efforts, it may leave less money for dividends.
But cash flow fluctuates, and AT&T still projects its free cash to total at least $18 billion for the full year. That's still well above the roughly $8.2 billion it pays in dividends on an annual basis. AT&T also said it expects to maintain its current dividend, which pays $1.11 per share on an annualized basis.
The dividend is safe, but is AT&T's stock worth buying?
AT&T is doing an excellent job of balancing both growth and dividends, making it an attractive stock to hang on to for the long haul. While it may be disappointing not to see any dividend growth from the stock in recent years, it can still provide you with an excellent payout and good value; it trades at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 11, which is based on analyst expectations.
This is a low-volatility stock that can be an ideal one to hang on to if you're worried about the stock market or just want an investment that can add some stability to your portfolio. AT&T may not be the flashiest stock to own, but it can make for a dependable income-generating investment to buy and hold.

AT&T's Free Cash Flow Declined Significantly Last Quarter. Is Its Dividend Still Safe?

Some stocks are late bloomers. Bloom Energy (NYSE: BE) is one of them.
After Bloom Energy went public in 2018, it initially looked like a hot IPO stock. Shares skyrocketed 40% higher within two months of the company's IPO. By the end of the year, though, the stock was down 60%. Six years later, Bloom Energy's share price remained below its first-day price.

But the story wasn't over. In the second half of 2025, Bloom Energy again took off. The industrial stock has delivered a staggering 13x gain in just 12 months. An initial $10,000 investment in Bloom Energy is now worth roughly $95,000.
Bloom Energy has made early investors who loaded up on the stock rich. Can it do it again?
In the right place at the right time
The solid oxide fuel cells that Bloom Energy makes for on-site power generation attracted attention from the beginning. Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL), then known as Google, was the company's first customer in 2008. Other early customers included Bank of America (NYSE: BAC), The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO), FedEx (NYSE: FDX), and Walmart (NASDAQ: WMT).
However, Bloom Energy's recent fortunes stem from being in the right place at the right time with the explosive growth of AI data centers. AI models require enormous amounts of electric power, to the point that power availability has become a major constraint for companies operating data centers.
Bloom's onsite power generation provides a solution to the problem. Instead of waiting for connections to power grids, data centers can get Bloom's Energy Servers installed and operational in as little as 90 days.
Oracle (NYSE: ORCL) provided a huge catalyst for Bloom Energy. In July 2025, the tech giant announced that it would deploy Bloom's technology at several of its U.S. data centers. Oracle selected Bloom because its technology provides "reliable, clean power that can be quickly deployed and easily scaled."
Other data center operators have also recognized Bloom's value. In addition to Oracle, the company's major data center customers include Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), CoreWeave (NASDAQ: CRWV), Equinix (NASDAQ: EQIX), AT&T (NYSE: T), Intel (NASDAQ: INTC), and Verizon (NYSE: VZ).
Ready for a repeat performance?
Can Bloom Energy make investors who buy the stock today rich? Maybe, but the task could be more difficult.
For one thing, Bloom's valuation is now off the charts. Shares trade at roughly 167 times forward earnings. The stock's price-to-earnings-to-growth (PEG) ratio, which includes five-year earnings growth projections, is a lofty 6.7.
Bloom seems likely to continue to deliver strong revenue growth. However, whether it can repeat the past's success will depend largely on how long the AI supercycle lasts.

Bloom Energy Has Made Early Investors Rich. Can It Do It Again?

SpaceX and OpenAI are reportedly preparing for what could be the two largest initial public offerings (IPOs) in U.S. history as measured by initial market values. While the listings are likely to be blockbuster events, investors should be cautious about diving in immediately.
SpaceX and OpenAI have very expensive valuations based on the financial data currently available, and stocks that go public with large market values have historically been poor long-term investments for investors who buy on day one. Here are the important details.

SpaceX and OpenAI will go public with historic market values and expensive valuations
SpaceX has already filed IPO paperwork and is on pace to list shares in Q3 2026. Earlier this year, the rocket and satellite company merged with xAI, forming a combined entity worth $1.25 trillion. SpaceX reportedly posted a $5 billion loss on $18 billion in revenue in 2025, according to technology news site The Information. That gives the stock a very expensive price-to-sales (PS) ratio of 69.
OpenAI has not filed IPO paperwork, but the artificial intelligence start-up could go public as soon as Q4 2026. The company closed its latest funding round with a post-money valuation of $852 billion. Sales soared 225% to $13 billion in 2025, and OpenAI says revenue will more than double in 2026. Nevertheless, the company currently has a very rich PS multiple of 65 and does not expect to turn a profit until 2030.
For context, only one stock in the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) currently trades at a more expensive valuation than SpaceX and OpenAI. That would be Palantir Technologies at 75 times sales. So not only are SpaceX and OpenAI going public with monster market values, but the stocks will also likely have extraordinarily high valuation ratios when they start trading.
History says SpaceX and OpenAI could soar initially, then drop sharply
Since 2000, nearly 4,000 companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges (NYSE and Nasdaq) have held initial public offerings, according to Jay Ritter, director of the IPO initiative at the University of Florida. Those stocks gained an average of 30% on their first trading day.
However, the initial excitement generally fades quickly as investors take profits after early price appreciation. Companies that go public with larger market values are particularly vulnerable to swift reversals. The chart below shows the 10 largest U.S. IPOs (as measured by the initial market value), and it gives the three-month and one-year returns after each stock was listed.

As shown above, the 10 largest IPO stocks dropped by a median of 11% during the three-month period following their public debut, and they declined by a median of 26% during their first year as public companies.
What does that mean for SpaceX and OpenAI? Alibaba went public with a market value of $169 billion. That means SpaceX and OpenAI would easily be the largest IPOs in U.S. history at their current market values. So at whatever price shares close on day one, the chart says there is a 50-50 chance the stocks will drop at least 26% from that level over the next year.
SpaceX and OpenAI are likely to underperform the S&P 500 from their initial valuations
There is more bad news for investors eager to own shares of SpaceX and OpenAI. Most of the stocks listed in the last section have actually underperformed the S&P 500 since going public. That means investors would have been better off purchasing shares of an S&P 500 index fund.
Alibaba is up 44% since its 2014 IPO, trailing the S&P 500 by 212 percentage points.
Uber is up 79% since its 2019 IPO, trailing the S&P 500 by 70 percentage points.
Rivian is down 84% since its 2021 IPO, trailing the S&P 500 by 138 percentage points.
DiDi is down 73% since its 2021 IPO, trailing the S&P 500 by 139 percentage points.
UPS is up 57% since its 1999 IPO, trailing the S&P 500 by 365 percentage points.
Coupang is down 59% since its 2021 IPO, trailing the S&P 500 by 141 percentage points.
What about the others? Meta Platforms, Arm Holdings, and Enel have beat the S&P 500 since their IPOs, and the long-term performance of AT&T Wireless cannot be determined because it was acquired by Cingular (a company that later changed its name to AT&T Mobility, which is now a wholly owned subsidiary of AT&T).
Here's the big picture: SpaceX and OpenAI are two of the most anticipated IPOs in recent memory. The buzz could lead to tremendous price increases during their first few trading days, but investors should think twice before diving into the fray. In general, large IPOs have been poor long-term investments for investors who buy right away.
The most prudent course of action would be to stay on the sidelines until a more reasonable entry point presents itself. For instance, while Uber has significantly underperformed the S&P 500 since its IPO, the stock is up 143% over the last three years, essentially doubling the S&P 500's return. Investors who waited for a reasonable entry point have been well rewarded.

The SpaceX and OpenAI IPOs Are Imminent. History Says the Stocks Will Do This When They Start Trading.

U.S. stocks closed higher on Wednesday after an extension of the ceasefire in the U.S.-Israel war with Iran was announced, while investors continued to assess earnings results. The Nasdaq Composite, the S&P 500 and the Dow ended in positive territory.
How Did The Benchmarks Perform?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) rose 0.7%, or 340.65 points, to close at 49,490.03.Twenty-one components of the 30-stock index ended in positive territory, while nine ended in negative territory.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.6%, to close at 24,657.57.
The S&P 500 gained 1.1% or 73.89 points, to end at 7,137.90. Out of 11 broad sectors of the broad-market index, seven ended in positive territory, and four ended in negative territory. The Information Technology Select Sector SPDR (XLK), the Communication Services Select Sector SPDR (XLC) and the Energy Select Sector SPDR (XLE) rose 2.3%, 1.4% and 1.1%, respectively, while the Real Estate Select Sector SPDR (XLRE) fell 0.7%.
The fear gauge, the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), decreased 3% to 18.92. A total of 16.08 billion shares were traded on Wednesday, lower than the last 20-session average of 18.3 billion. The S&P 500 posted 31 new 52-week highs and five new lows, while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 118 new highs and 57 new lows.
U.S. Extends Iran Ceasefire
The United States will continue a ceasefire with Iran, President Donald Trump said, following a request for more time from Pakistan’s leaders. One of the reasons to extend the ceasefire is internal political instability in Tehran.
Despite scheduling talks, there is reportedly little engagement from Tehran. U.S. Vice President JD Vance was due to visit, but has put his plans on hold. Iranian officials say the talks were unproductive. But tensions remained high after Iran’s navy seized two container ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Q1 Earnings Results
GE Vernova Inc. GEV reported first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $1.98 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.84 per share. Quarterly net revenues were $9.34 billion, ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.47%.
Moody's Corporation MCO reported first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $4.33 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.25 per share. Quarterly net revenues were $2.08 billion, which outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.38%.
Philip Morris International Inc. PM reported first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $1.96 per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.82 per share. Quarterly net revenues came in at $10.15 billion, outpacing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3.26%.
AT&T Inc. T reported first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $0.57 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $0.55 per share. Quarterly net revenues were $31.51 billion, above the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 1.01%.

AT&T (NYSE:T), a telecommunications and technology services provider, closed Wednesday at $25.98, up 0.39%. The stock has fallen 8.23% in the past month, and today’s Q1 results went some way to turning the tide. It beat expectations on revenue and earnings, but its wireless revenue fell short.
Trading volume reached 59.7 million shares, about 34% above its three-month average of 44.6 million shares. AT&T IPO'd in 1983 and has grown 577% since going public.
How the markets moved today
S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) gained 1.05% to finish Wednesday at 7,138, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) rose 1.64% to close at 24,658. Within telecommunications, industry peers Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) closed down 0.63% at $45.98, and T-Mobile US (NASDAQ:TMUS) fell 3.31% to finish at $188.92 as investors weighed wireless pricing and competitive dynamics.
What this means for investors
AT&T shares dipped this morning despite announcing Q1 results that beat estimates on earnings per share (EPS) and revenue. Its adjusted EPS of $0.57 and revenue of $31.5 billion both increased year over year, and came in above analyst forecasts of $0.55 and $31.25 billion, respectively.
The stock pared its losses before the bell, but its muted gains today reflect investor caution after AT&T missed on other metrics. Bloomberg points to disappointing wireless service revenue and flat revenue per user. For AT&T investors, the question is whether its integration of 5G, fiber-optic, and wireless networks, including its Lumen acquisition, will help it attract more customers and increase revenue, particularly amid a broader backdrop of reduced consumer confidence.
