It's easy to understand the allure of XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) for crypto investors. Between November 2024 and January 2025, it soared nearly 600% in value, eventually hitting a 52-week high of $3.39 in mid-January.
However, since then, XRP has slumped badly. It's now down 35%, and shows little sign of regaining momentum. As a result, I've been looking for "the next XRP" -- a low-cost, high-upside cryptocurrency capable of skyrocketing in price just like XRP. My top pick right now is Sui (CRYPTO: SUI), and here's why.

What is Sui?
Sui is the latest in a long line of highly touted Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) challengers. While Solana (CRYPTO: SOL) is currently the top Ethereum challenger, Sui has often been referred to as a potential "Solana killer." So, in terms of current pecking order, there's Ethereum, there's Solana, and there's Sui.
Sui currently ranks No. 12 among all cryptocurrencies, with a market cap of $10 billion. That's all the more impressive given that Sui only launched in April 2023. In just two years, it has already become one of the top cryptocurrencies in the world.
To give you an idea of just how big the potential market opportunity is for Sui, Solana has an $80 billion market cap, while Ethereum has a $300 billion market cap. So if Sui manages to catch Solana, it might increase in value eight-fold. If it manages to close the gap with Ethereum, it might increase in value by 30-fold.
Similarities between Sui and XRP
What's particularly interesting is how many similarities there are between Sui and XRP. Both are currently trading at more than 40% discounts to their all-time highs. Both also hit 52-week highs in January 2025, amid a wave of crypto euphoria.
That's not all. Both are strong candidates to get spot ETFs this year, and both have high-profile Silicon Valley companies backing them. XRP has Ripple Labs, while Sui has Mysten Labs. To date, Mysten Labs has raised over $300 million in financing to support the build-out of the Sui blockchain ecosystem.
Moreover, if you look at trading activity on the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN), both XRP and Sui rank among the top five cryptocurrencies in terms of 24-hour trading volume. While Sui may not be a household name quite yet, traders are certainly aware of it.
So why is Sui not generating the same types of headlines as XRP? Well, Sui launched in 2023 as the crypto winter of 2022 was coming to an end. That was bad timing, to say the least. The last thing investors want to hear about when the market is at the very bottom is a new, highly speculative cryptocurrency.
However, Sui has certainly made up for lost time, and is now starting to attract more attention from institutional investors. In August 2024, a research report from 21Shares ("Is Sui a Solana Killer?") highlighted Sui's impressive performance metrics, including its blazing-fast speeds.
Sell XRP, buy Sui?
Will Sui really be able to outperform XRP over the long haul? It depends on the long-term growth prospects of both. If you think that Ripple (XRP) can become a world leader in cross-border payments, you buy XRP. If you think that Solana and Ethereum are ripe for disruption, then you buy Sui.
Going forward, one major point of differentiation might be stablecoins, which have emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments of the crypto market. Right now, stablecoins appear to be taking a big bite out of XRP's core business (cross-border payments). In contrast, stablecoins are likely to be complementary for the Sui blockchain ecosystem, helping to drive more user activity.
Upside potential in 2025
According to online prediction markets, XRP has a 72% chance of hitting a price of $3.40 before the end of the year, and a 30% chance of hitting $3.75. Based on its current price of $2.20, that means XRP has a relatively high likelihood of soaring 50% or more by the end of 2025.
Given all its similarities with XRP, I'm expecting Sui to meet or exceed this type of performance. If Sui is able to regain its highs from January, then it could soar more than 75% by the end of the year. If you are willing to accept the risk of significant volatility ahead, Sui could be yet another way to diversify your portfolio with a low-cost, high-upside cryptocurrency.

Furthermore, Sui's architecture employs the Move programming language, recognized for its flexible and efficient framework designed to prevent security vulnerabilities and deliver more predictable performance. Sui's exceptional speed, scalability, and low fees make it ideal for real-time applications, including decentralized finance (DeFi) and next-generation gaming, driving platform development and ecosystem growth.

Robust metrics underscore Sui's growing utility and ability to attract users and capital from competing Layer-1 and Layer-2 blockchains.

My prediction for Sui in one year
Despite the wild swings in financial markets this year amid a delicate economic environment, recent headlines suggest easing trade tensions have helped boost investor confidence and stabilize some asset classes. This backdrop of resiliency could be key for the Sui blockchain to continue growing, providing a tailwind for its price this year.
I'm bullish and predict that Sui can surpass its all-time high of $5.35 during the next year. Although the cryptocurrency remains speculative and faces the challenge of staying at the cutting edge of innovation in the highly competitive crypto industry, I believe the project is still in the early stages of its success. Ultimately, Sui has proven itself to be one of the most important cryptocurrencies in the market and deserves to be on your investing radar.

A Solid Investment in Affordable Housing?

Only a handful of cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) and XRP (CRYPTO: XRP), have been able to avoid the worst of the declines in response to President Donald Trump's new tariffs.
Most top cryptocurrencies are down at least 20% for the year, with two major categories of cryptocurrencies -- Layer 1 blockchain networks and meme coins -- getting slammed especially hard. Let's take a closer look to see whether any of these beaten-down cryptos might be worth buying right now.

Layer 1 blockchain networks
Layer 1 blockchain networks, such as Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH), Solana (CRYPTO: SOL), Cardano (CRYPTO: ADA), Sui (CRYPTO: SUI), and Avalanche (CRYPTO: AVAX), have declined significantly. All of them still boast market caps of $9 billion or higher and still rank among the top 15 cryptocurrencies in the world. However, it has become obvious that many investors won't touch them.
The worst performer by a wide margin has been Ethereum. While Solana and Cardano are down a disappointing 20% on the year, Ethereum is down an eye-popping 46%. The investor sentiment around Ethereum is deeply negative, and the gap between Ethereum and its closest rivals appears to be narrowing.
Quite frankly, this shouldn't be happening. After all, Ethereum is the world's second-largest cryptocurrency, with a market value of almost $220 billion. It is one of only two cryptos (Bitcoin being the other) with a spot exchange-traded fund (ETF). During the past decade, it has had an impeccable track record of delivering outsized returns to investors.
Despite its current slide, Ethereum still appears to have the support of the Trump administration, which made it a cornerstone of its new U.S. Digital Asset Stockpile back in March. Members of the Trump family, including President Trump himself, have publicly vouched for Ethereum on social media. And World Liberty Financial, the crypto company affiliated with the Trump family, has made Ethereum a high-profile holding.
Meme coins
If there's any category of crypto that's performing worse than Layer 1 blockchains right now, it's meme coins. The current tariff environment has led to a stark risk-off mentality among investors, and there hasn't been a good reason to invest in meme coins for months now.
Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE), the top meme coin by market cap, is down 45% this year. Shiba Inu (CRYPTO: SHIB), the second-largest meme coin, is down 37%. Pepe (CRYPTO: PEPE), the third-largest meme coin, is down 53%. And the Official Trump meme coin (which trades under the ticker TRUMP), the fourth-largest meme coin, is down a face-melting 84% since its debut back in January.
The message from investors could not be clearer: Stay away from meme coins. Even before tariffs, meme coins were risky, speculative investments. Now, they are complete dumpster fires, with Cathie Wood of Ark Invest recently suggesting that nearly all of them will soon be worthless.
That's not to say that some meme coins won't pop every now and then, but that's likely to be a dead cat bounce. (Or in the case of Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, a dead dog bounce.) Sorry, pet lovers, but I can't think of a worse place to invest your money right now. If you're buying animal-themed meme coins now, you're providing the exit liquidity for investors sitting on big losses right now.
Are any of these beaten-down cryptos worth buying now?
It might be tempting to sift through the crypto discount bin to see whether there are any bargains to be found. After all, we're talking about multibillion-dollar digital assets that have seen their value slashed anywhere from 20% to 50% in a matter of months. Surely, there's a good deal somewhere?
With that in mind, one crypto that might be worth exploring right now is Solana. Even amid tariff uncertainty, activity appears to be picking up on the Solana blockchain. And Solana has clearly emerged as the top challenger to Ethereum, which appears to be mired in an existential crisis these days. Best of all, we've seen how much Solana can pop. Back in 2023, Solana soared by more than 900%.
Just keep this in mind: Concerns about recession, inflation, and a potential trade war mean there is absolutely no appetite right now for many cryptocurrency investments. For now, Bitcoin remains the top crypto to target amid tariff uncertainty. Historically, Bitcoin has been more resilient than other cryptos in the face of economic and geopolitical uncertainty, and it could be your best option as a potential hedge against a global economic slowdown.

2 Types of Cryptocurrencies Getting Slammed by President Trump's New Tariffs

Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) can't seem to catch a break. Between its tumbling price and the terrible sentiment about the chain's present and future, there isn't much for investors to be happy about.
And there's a new sign that now might not be the right time to buy it, even if you are willing to hold on to it for a good while. Here's what's going on.

This is a sign that a chain utilization crisis is underway
Ethereum is the second-largest cryptocurrency, with a market cap of almost $220 billion. That means that if its ecosystem is healthy, there should be a vast number of users interacting with its chain via crypto wallets. As users can have more than one wallet, and many do, there isn't a precise 1-to-1 relationship between the number of users and the number of wallet addresses, but there's still a connection between how many wallets are active and the amount of activity there is on a chain. So the number of active wallet addresses is a useful proxy for a chain's health.
For the month of March, Ethereum had 13.9 million active wallet addresses on its chain. Its largest competitor, Solana, had roughly 68 million active wallet addresses despite having a much smaller market cap of about $78 billion. But even much smaller chains than that have one-upped Ethereum. Sui reported about 38 million active addresses despite having a market cap of only $12 billion.
There is nothing inherent in Solana's chain that makes its users more likely than Ethereum's to need multiple wallet addresses, though the fact that it's much cheaper to move funds around probably contributes to there being more addresses in active use. The issue here for Ethereum holders is that a year ago, there were 15.4 million active wallet addresses, a decline of 1.5 million. That makes the coin a risky buy because it is clearly not seeing an increasing rate of adoption, which would result in more active wallets than before.
And Ethereum's price has declined by about 33% during the past three years. The chain is facing an unhealthy combination of persistently poor investor sentiment and a decline in its user base. The competition is winning, stealing capital share, and looks set to increase its lead. And that will take some significant work across multiple fronts to reverse.
Heed this warning
It is very risky to buy Ethereum at the moment, even though its price is nowhere near an inflated valuation. Despite significant impending network upgrades, specifically the Pectra update that's currently in testing, it is unlikely that new features will soon make Ethereum a faster and cheaper chain to the point where it can rival Solana. The rate of capital flight from Ethereum to Solana will probably accelerate rather than decelerate until Ethereum becomes a better place to develop decentralized applications or invest in them.
The chain's chances of a reversal in the near term are not zero, but they are not very good, either. Winning in an important emerging growth segment, like artificial intelligence agents, real-world asset tracking, or decentralized physical infrastructure networks, could attract more investment. Presently, it isn't a leader in any of those areas, though it's still fairly competitive in AI infrastructure and agent tokens.
In the longer term, Ethereum could well recover, and it is important to note that it is practically guaranteed to survive even the most protracted doldrums on the basis of its technical leadership, its legacy in cryptocurrency, and its centrality to the decentralized finance ecosystem alone, not to mention the still-vast sums parked on its chain. Regardless of its current problems, it's also a very important cryptocurrency advocate, which lends it legitimacy that most other chains cannot approach. But you don't need to bet your money on its recovery. And given its declining user base, it is probably better if you don't.

1 New Sign That Ethereum Is a Risky Buy Right Now

Altcoins were hot this week as investors poured back into the crypto market after a major sell-off early in April.
The biggest move came from Sui (CRYPTO: SUI), which has been gaining momentum from users this year, and jumped 68.4% this week. Solana (CRYPTO: SOL) was up 13% on the week, Cardano (CRYPTO: ADA) was up 14.8%, and Avalanche (CRYPTO: AVAX) popped 17.6%.

The macro picture
It's hard to discuss crypto trading without acknowledging the impact that market dynamics and trade volatility are having on the value of assets. When President Donald Trump announced tariffs earlier this month the market tanked because of the negative impact they could have on global trade and economies all around the world.
This week's move higher has been in large part because the White House is trying to soften its tariff rhetoric. Some exemptions have been given and talks are reportedly ongoing with some countries. And investors took that as a positive enough sign to buy growth and tech stocks, which are also correlated with cryptocurrencies in the market.
Sui's hot hand
Investors often view network activity as a sign of a healthy blockchain and valuable token and Sui is one of the hottest networks today. In March, decentralized exchange volume jumped to 3.2 billion SUI and total value locked in exchanges hit 2.5 billion SUI.
Stablecoins have also hit new highs of $879 million, an 82% increase from a year earlier. As the most common form of currency on the blockchain, stablecoins on-chain are a good way to gauge how much people are using a blockchain.
Solana's mobile phone disruption
Solana continues to be one of the most active blockchains for developers and this week the Solana project Helium signed a deal with AT&T. Helium is a community-led distribution network for wireless service. Originally, Helium was a series of hotspots around the world that gave users access to the network they were running on. That could have been a home network or cellular network like AT&T's.
This deal gives a business like this more viability to expand and gives AT&T another distribution path. It's this kind of experimentation that ultimately drives innovation on the blockchain.
The altcoin bump
Avalanche and Cardano are two other altcoins based on differentiated blockchains that should bring high utility long-term. To that end, Avalanche project Axiym surpassed $132 million in volume on its cross-border payment platform.
Cardano's founder also recently said the Lace wallet would support the popular token XRP.
These may not be groundbreaking news items, but they're steps in the right direction for blockchains built for utility. Ultimately, that could drive value to their tokens.
Volatility will continue
The altcoin market was driven by an overall move to riskier assets this week. If that continues, the market can move higher, but the more important metrics to watch will be the users on-chain and how many businesses are being built on these platforms. Without that, the value will fade over time.
