Constellation Brands
Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ) is a leading alcohol company that has dealt with internal and external threats. Sales have suffered as consumers across generations have reduced alcohol consumption.
Also, while it distributes America's No. 1 beer, Modelo, the beer's ties to Mexico stoked worries about tariff threats. Internally, the company did not foresee the falling consumption patterns and relied too heavily on wine and spirit brands that did not perform well.
However, investors have priced these challenges into the stock, perhaps overly so. That prompted Warren Buffett to invest some of Berkshire Hathaway's cash into the stock before he retired, and this was likely a wise decision. Moreover, Constellation has divested some of its underperforming wine and spirit brands.
The divestiture was partially responsible for an 11% sales decline in fiscal 2026 (ended Feb. 28). Nonetheless, it generated $1.8 billion in free cash flow in that fiscal year. That allowed it to repurchase shares and fund its dividend. That payout, which has risen every year since 2015, pays investors $4.12 per share annually, a 2.6% cash return.
Furthermore, in fiscal 2027, the company forecasts net sales will remain steady at the midpoint. The stock has also risen 15% since the beginning of the year. Considering its P/E ratio of just 16, one could argue that this Warren Buffett stock is absurdly cheap right now.
PepsiCo
Like Constellation, PepsiCo (NASDAQ: PEP) provides a unique opportunity to investors as it adapts to evolving consumer tastes. Aside from its flagship cola, Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Doritos, and Quaker Oats are among the products under its umbrella.
In recent years, consumers have become increasingly leery of sugary drinks and processed foods, leading to a reduction in sales. PepsiCo has responded by changing the ingredients in many of its products and buying some brands associated with healthier offerings, such as Siete Foods.
Its recovery is showing some promising signs. In its fiscal first quarter (ended March 21), net revenue grew by nearly 9%, well above the 2% in fiscal 2025. Also, even though free cash flow was negative $406 million in fiscal Q1, it improved from year-ago levels. Investors should note that the free cash flow was nearly $7.7 billion in fiscal 2025.
That cash repurchased shares and supported its dividend, which has increased for 54 straight years. At $4.69 per share annually, it yields almost 3.7%.
Analysts forecast a 5% revenue increase in fiscal 2026, indicating its market pivot is working. Furthermore, its stock has risen by almost 10% this year, and at a P/E ratio of 24, it is likely not too late to invest in a probable recovery in PepsiCo stock.
Kimberly-Clark
Similar to PepsiCo, Kimberly-Clark (NASDAQ: KMB) has built its business around trusted brands. It owns Kleenex, Huggies, Cottonelle, and others. Also, its upcoming acquisition of Kenvue, which was once the consumer health division of Johnson & Johnson, will place more familiar brands like Tylenol and Listerine under its umbrella.
Over the last year, the stock has suffered amid rising input costs, expenses related to a company restructuring, and the $48.7 billion cost of acquiring Kenvue. In that time, the stock lost more than one-fourth of its value.
However, these moves could spark the beginnings of a recovery. In 2025, its net sales fell by 2%. Also, it generated $1.6 billion in free cash flow in that year, down by 35% amid the restructuring.
Share levels remained steady, though it is on track to continue funding the dividend that has risen for 54 consecutive years. At $5.12 per share annually, it yields about 5.1%, enough to pay investors while they wait for a recovery.
Analysts anticipate net sales growth of around 3%. Moreover, its P/E ratio has fallen to 16, a level near multiyear lows. Between that valuation and its high-paying, growing dividend, any positive news could spark a recovery in the stock.

It's been a mixed bag in the stock market lately -- several companies are delighting investors by beating analysts' expectations in the first three months of the year. But on the other hand, companies are making shareholders nervous by withdrawing guidance for the next quarter or the rest of the year.
It's a sign of market uncertainty -- tariff policies that whipsaw back and forth, uncertainties about oil supply, and the status of the Iran war are making companies nervous. Amid that backdrop, it's difficult to guess what expenses companies will incur or the appetite for consumer spending for the next several months.

"Some percentage of companies -- more than normal -- will just be saying (they) don't have the visibility to provide discrete guidance for the quarter," David Lefkowitz, head of US Equities at UBS Global Wealth Management, told Morningstar. "There are too many variables, I think, to really game it out."
The outlook for year is murky
The stock market, in general, indeed hates uncertainty, and we're seeing that play out across earnings reports across a variety of industries. Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ) posted an earnings beat for its fiscal fourth quarter of 2026 (ending Feb. 28) of $1.90 per share, beating estimates of $1.71. But the beverage alcohol company withdrew its fiscal 2027 guidance, citing the economy and its impact on consumer spending.
Apparel company Steve Madden (NASDAQ: SHOO) beat analysts' estimates by a penny per share in the fourth quarter of 2025, but in February, it announced it was withdrawing its 2026 guidance due to uncertainties from U.S. tariffs.
BRP (NASDAQ: DOO), a Canadian manufacturer of powersports vehicles and marine products, posted earnings of $2.23 per share, beating analysts' expectations for $2.03 per share in the fiscal fourth quarter of 2026 (ending Jan. 31). But the company withdrew its guidance as well, citing $500 million in tariff expenses.
At least 21 companies have withdrawn or cut their guidance since the beginning of the Iran war, according to Reuters, with companies citing disruptions to supply chains and higher fuel prices.
How investors should respond
Pulled guidance creates a challenging investment environment. For long-term investors, I'm in favor of riding the wave even when it gets a little bumpy. Companies are withholding guidance because they don't have a clear idea of the next few months, but the market historically averages 10% gains per year over the long term -- and that's where you should be focused.
For investors who are approaching retirement, this is a time for caution. Broad exchange-traded funds or index funds are ideal investments for their diversification, but it would be a mistake to be overweighted on any one stock and risk a market downturn. If you're investing in individual stocks, carefully review management's commentary and question-and-answer sessions with analysts, even if your company has withdrawn its guidance, to get some clarity on what challenges may lie ahead.
Either way, what we're seeing in the market right now isn't a case of businesses being broken or management error. It's more about the fact that companies don't have crystal balls, and the landscape is shifting too quickly on tariffs and the Middle East, making it hard for them to responsibly project the revenues or profits they'll see.

Companies Are Beating Estimates But Pulling Guidance. Here Is What That Disconnect Could Be Telling Investors About the Rest of 2026.

One of Berkshire's top investment managers, Todd Combs, recently left the company for JPMorgan Chase.
New CEO Greg Abel now controls of most of Berkshire's portfolio.
If Abel sold all of Combs' positions, that could amount to roughly $15 billion of the portfolio, or more.
If Warren Buffett's departure as chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRKA)(NYSE: BRKB) and the large conglomerate's first new CEO in six decades wasn't enough, there could be more change coming to the company, particularly surrounding its closely watched stock portfolio worth roughly $322 billion.
A report from The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources, said that new CEO Greg Abel has dumped all the stocks managed by one of Buffett's investing lieutenants, Todd Combs, who recently left Berkshire for a role at JPMorgan Chase.

If true, the sold stocks could amount to a position of around $15 billion or more.
Combs likely managed about 5% of the portfolio
While Buffett managed the bulk of the equities portfolio until he stepped down as CEO, reports over the years indicated that Combs and Ted Weschler, who is still at Berkshire, oversaw about 10% of it at their own discretion.
Assuming they split it evenly means Combs had control of more than 5% of the portfolio, which today would amount to at least $16 billion. However, Berkshire's portfolio has hovered around $300 billion in recent years, so $15 billion is a fair assumption.
Although Abel has said he plans to leave many things at the company unchanged, the Berkshire veteran has also begun to make his mark. In his first annual letter to shareholders, he listed nine holdings in Berkshire's portfolio that he implied were "core holdings" and would see "limited activity" unless there are "fundamental changes in its long-term economic prospects."
Comments like these have led some to wonder whether Berkshire will be as active an investor. Abel does not have a background in portfolio management.
Abel also said in the letter that the responsibility of the equities portfolio ultimately resides with him, although Weschler would continue to manage 6% of it, including some of it previously managed by Combs.
While it's hard to know exactly which stocks Combs purchased and managed, many market watchers and analysts viewed him as the tech guru at the company and believe he was responsible for buying Amazon, Visa, Mastercard, Verisign, and Snowflake, which Berkshire sold in 2024.
It's also possible that Combs was responsible for some of Berkshire's smaller, more tech-focused financials companies, like Capital One and Ally Financial.
In the fourth quarter of 2025, Berkshire lowered its stake in nine of its holdings, including Atlanta Braves Holdings, Aon, Pool Corp., Liberty Latin America, Constellation Brands, and DaVita, although there's been speculation that DaVita is a Weschler position.
The market will get clues soon
The good news is that investors will only have to guess for a few more weeks. Berkshire must file its first-quarter 10-Q with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by May 2, which would reveal how much in stocks it bought and sold in the first quarter, and provide insight into which sectors. The actual positions that Berkshire changed in the first quarter will be made public in an SEC 13F filing, which must be released by May 15.
Even if Abel intends to sell all of the roughly $15 billion in equities that Combs managed, it may not all happen at once. Berkshire's size and equity positions have grown so large that it's not always easy to unload all at once. It may take several quarters.
Investors should not only look for potential changes to the portfolio, but also consider what it says about Abel's plans for the company and its portfolio. Based on his comments in the shareholder letter, he seems to be moving toward a more passive portfolio that would see fewer quarterly changes. But it's still early on in his tenure, so only time will tell.

Although Buffett remains chairman of the board, Berkshire Hathaway's day-to-day operations, including the management and oversight of its $320 billion investment portfolio, fall to Abel. As of the closing bell on April 16, Berkshire's new boss has the final say over 48 positions.
Greg Abel's portfolio is highly concentrated in 10 core holdings
Warren Buffett's and Greg Abel's investment philosophies are very similar. In addition to value being of the utmost importance, both favor robust capital-return programs, strong management teams, and companies with sustainable competitive advantages.
Perhaps most importantly, Berkshire's former and current bosses believe in apportioning an outsize percentage of the company's capital into their best ideas. Just 10 positions account for nearly 79% of Berkshire Hathaway's invested assets:

Several of these "best idea" stocks share similarities. For instance, all 10 pay dividends to their shareholders, with some also actively repurchasing their shares. Apple has the largest share repurchase program on Wall Street, with the iPhone maker spending roughly $841 billion since 2013 to retire over 44% of its outstanding shares.
Buffett and Abel also view seven out of these 10 core positions as indefinite holdings. With the exception of Bank of America, Chevron, and Chubb, the remaining seven companies are expected to be fixtures in Berkshire's portfolio for decades to come. This includes Coca-Cola, American Express, and Moody's, the three longest-tenured holdings that are currently generating annual yields on cost of 63%, 45%, and 41%, respectively.
Investors can see Abel's influence among these 10 core holdings, as well. Abel is a huge fan of Japan's five trading houses, commonly known as the "sogo shosha," and was instrumental in building up sizable stakes in Mitsubishi and Mitsui.

You'll note that the other three members of the sogo shosha are in this grouping (Itochu, Marubeni, and Sumitomo), and that they collectively make up five of Berkshire's 16 largest holdings by market value.
But what really stands out about these billion-dollar wagers is the emphasis on sustainable competitive advantages. For instance, Sirius XM and VeriSign operate as legal monopolies. Sirius XM is the only licensed satellite radio operator, while VeriSign is the registrar of ".com" and ".net" domains. Growth may not be off the charts for either company, but they possess unmatched competitive edges.
Abel is also overseeing close to $4.7 billion in combined investments in payment facilitators Visa and Mastercard. Whereas many of their peers double dip and act as lenders, Visa and Mastercard are solely focused on collecting merchant fees for facilitating payments. This means neither Visa nor Mastercard has to worry about setting aside capital for credit delinquencies or loan losses during periods of economic turbulence.
And we can't forget about Domino's Pizza, which is a stock the Oracle of Omaha added to for six consecutive quarters leading up to his retirement. Domino's ability to build consumers' trust and its track record of meeting or exceeding five-year growth initiatives made it a go-to investment for Berkshire's now-retired billionaire boss.

Many of these "smaller" positions fall into two categories: companies that have been reduced or are being removed from Berkshire's investment portfolio, or investments made by Ted Weschler or Todd Combs, the latter of whom left Berkshire to join JPMorgan Chase in December 2025.
For example, Berkshire's stake in e-commerce and cloud infrastructure services titan Amazon was slashed by 77% during the December-ended quarter. Historically, a 77% reduction in a mid-tier position in Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio has been a strong signal that a company would soon be getting the heave-ho. Though Amazon is historically inexpensive relative to its future cash flow, it's not a value stock in the traditional sense of the term -- and that may be a problem for Greg Abel.
While it's possible that some of these smaller positions can eventually become billion-dollar wagers, these investments are better viewed as trading opportunities for Weschler and his team.
