Shares of Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ) have dropped 49% from recent highs over macroeconomic headwinds. People have been consuming beer for thousands of years, and that's not going to stop. This makes the dip a great buying opportunity.
Constellation owns several top Mexican beer imports. Modelo and Corona are two of the best-selling brands in the U.S., but its new Corona Sunbrew has quickly become the No. 1 new beer brand in the U.S.
Full-year adjusted sales will be down by single-digit percentages, but for income investors, the dividend is safe. The quarterly payout of $1.02 is well supported by estimated full-year adjusted earnings of $11.51, according to Yahoo! Finance. This makes the forward dividend yield of 2.91% very attractive.
2. Hershey: Forward dividend yield of 2.97%
Hershey (NYSE: HSY) is another top consumer brand that is getting hit hard by temporary headwinds. In this case, record cocoa prices and poor harvests have raised costs, sending the stock down 33% from its previous high. The lower share price has brought the yield up, making the dip a good buying opportunity.
People tend to gravitate to recognizable brands, which has served Hershey well for over a century. Top brands like Reese's and Hershey contribute to an $11 billion snack powerhouse. In second-quarter 2025, the company posted stronger sales, leading to share gains in the U.S. candy, mint, and gum market.
Hershey has paid a dividend for 95 years, which says a lot about the company's financial stability and resiliency. Despite the recent supply chain disruptions, the quarterly dividend payment of $1.37 is supported by expected full-year adjusted earnings of $5.49, with forecasts calling for earnings to rebound to $6.80 in 2026. This is a rare opportunity to buy this iconic chocolate brand at a high forward yield of 2.97%.
3. Target: Forward dividend yield of 4.89%
Tariffs and weak sales trends have sent Target (NYSE: TGT) shares down 65% from their previous high. This is an elite dividend payer that has paid a dividend every year since 1967. Target currently offers the highest yield among the three companies featured here, while paying out only about half its earnings.
The weak sales environment, which sent Target's sales down 1% last quarter, should prove to be a temporary hurdle. Target has navigated numerous economic cycles, including the Great Depression in the 1930s, and is still generating solid earnings in 2025.
At the quarterly payout of $1.14, the forward dividend yield is currently 4.89%, supported by expected full-year earnings of $7.34. This has been a resilient retail business for over a century, which speaks to Target's exceptional inventory management and ability to generate steady sales and profits to fund the dividend.

3 High-Yield Dividend Stocks Down 33% to 65% to Buy Right Now

If you're buying stocks hand over fist right now, you're living dangerously. At least, that's what Warren Buffett would probably tell you.
The legendary investor stated in a Fortune article published in 2001 that if the ratio of total stock market capitalization to gross national product (GNP) approaches 200%, investors are "playing with fire." This ratio is now known as the Buffett indicator, with gross domestic product (GDP) replacing GNP. Guess what the level of the Buffett indicator is right now? An all-time high of 219%.

But Buffett himself isn't completely throwing in the towel on the stock market despite its sky-high valuation. The "Oracle of Omaha" and his team at Berkshire Hathaway can't stop buying these three stocks, in particular.
1. Constellation Brands
Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRK.A) (NYSE: BRK.B) initiated a new position in Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ) in the fourth quarter of 2024 and added more shares of the premium beer, wine, and spirits company in the first and second quarters of 2025. Berkshire now has a 7.7% stake in Constellation Brands worth roughly $1.9 billion.
Why does Buffett like this stock so much? For one thing, it's a business he undoubtedly understands. Whether or not Buffett consumes Constellation Brands' products, he knows they enjoy strong market positions -- especially the company's Corona and Modelo premium beers.
Buffett also probably likes Constellation's valuation. The stock's forward price-to-earnings ratio of 12 looks like a bargain compared to most other stocks.
I think Buffett and the team at Berkshire like Constellation Brands' ability to generate reliable free cash flow, too. In the first half of fiscal year 2026, the company pulled in free cash flow of $1.1 billion. Management has deployed some of this strong free cash flow in funding the dividend program and had completed $604 million of stock buybacks in calendar year 2025 as of September.
2. Lennar
Lennar (NYSE: LEN) (NYSE: LEN.B) has two share classes. Berkshire owns both of them and has bought Lennar's class A and class B shares in the first two quarters of 2025.
It's not hard to imagine why Buffett likes Lennar. The company ranks among the biggest homebuilders in the U.S., and Buffett has direct experience with a similar business: Clayton Homes is one of Berkshire's subsidiaries.
The U.S. continues to face a chronic housing shortage. This should bode well for Lennar's long-term growth prospects, something that Buffett almost certainly knows. His purchases of Lennar's class A and class B shares this year could also have been partially motivated by expectations that the Federal Reserve would lower interest rates, leading to a decline in mortgage rates.
I suspect Buffett views Lennar's valuation as attractive, too. The stock trades at under 14 times forward earnings estimates.
3. Pool Corp.
Berkshire initiated a position in Pool Corp. (NASDAQ: POOL) in the third quarter of 2024, and has bought additional shares of the world's largest wholesale distributor of swimming pool and related outdoor living products in every reported quarter since then. Berkshire now has a 9.3% stake in Pool worth over $1 billion.
Interestingly, though, Pool's valuation isn't at a bargain level like Constellation Brands' and Lennar's. Pool's shares trade at 26.6 times earnings estimates. The company's growth doesn't seem to warrant a premium price tag, either. Pool's net sales increased by only 1% year over year in its latest quarter, with diluted earnings per share rising by a modest 4%.
So why might Buffett be loading up on this stock? He could like Pool's durable business model. The company has a strong market position. It also generates a predictable cash flow, with repairs and maintenance to existing pools making up over 60% of revenue.
Buffett and his team could also think that Pool's long-term growth prospects are much better than its recent growth. The average age of swimming pools in the U.S. is increasing, which should drive higher repair and maintenance revenue. Many Americans are also moving to warmer climates, a trend that could boost new pool installations.

Warren Buffett Thinks Investors Are "Playing With Fire" With a Sky-High Market Valuation. But He Can't Stop Buying These 3 Stocks.

Investors who follow Warren Buffett probably already know that his lack of interest in putting Berkshire Hathaway's (NYSE: BRK.A) (NYSE: BRK.B) huge hoard of cash into the market is very likely a warning that most stocks aren't worth buying at their present prices.
He's not explicitly said as much. Actions (or lack of actions, in this case) speak louder than words, though. And Berkshire's $340 billion worth of cash just sitting on the sidelines speaks volumes ... even more so given that the conglomerate's been sitting on a similar amount since the middle of last year.

To say Buffett's not been buying anything, however, isn't entirely accurate. He has been. Berkshire recently scooped up a little more than 5 million shares of beaten-down UnitedHealth worth roughly $2 billion. It also recently announced plans to purchase Occidental Petroleum's (NYSE: OXY) chemical arm Oxychem for nearly $10 billion.
These are pittances compared to Berkshire's available cash, of course, so don't read too much into these investments. Rather, you might want to take note of all the stocks Buffett's been buying for Berkshire that it already owns, quietly adding to its existing position. This is quite telling in and of itself, and may well be a lead you want to follow.
Here's a rundown of the seven positions that Berkshire expanded through the first half of this year.
1. Chevron
Oil giant Chevron (NYSE: CVX) was already Berkshire's fifth-biggest equity holding. During the second quarter of this year, it became even bigger thanks to the addition of another 3.5 million shares. It now accounts for a little over 6% of Berkshire Hathaway's equity portfolio, in fact. Combined with its stake in Occidental, this means energy stocks alone now make up about 10% of the conglomerate's total stock portfolio.
It's a curious decision in light of the advent of electric vehicles and renewable energy sources. Fossil fuels are seemingly at the end of their useful life.
However, maybe Buffett recognizes what not enough people are publicly acknowledging. That is, the growth of alternative energy just isn't happening fast enough to displace the ongoing need for crude oil and natural gas. Analysts at Goldman Sachs don't expect the world to reach "peak oil" (the point at which demand for oil reaches its record high and then tapers off forevermore) until 2034, with consumption likely to remain firm -- keeping the industry profitable -- well beyond 2040.
2. Pool Corp.
Swimming pool supply company Pool Corp. (NASDAQ: POOL) was a surprising purchase when Berkshire first stepped into it in the third quarter of last year. Even more curious is the fact that it's added to the position every quarter since then, bringing the holding's total value up to $1 billion. That's just a little less than 10% of the entire company.
This may be a bit of bargain-hunting. Shares of this well-run company haven't really budged since pulling back in 2022. Just don't expect too much from Pool Corp. too soon. It needs firm economic strength to muster any growth of its own.
3. Sirius XM
Berkshire's had an on-again/off-again relationship with Sirius XM (NASDAQ: SIRI) for a long time. It finally looked like Buffett was happy with the size of Berkshire's position as of late last year. Then, just a few weeks ago, Berkshire Hathaway picked up another 5 million shares that it seemingly didn't really need to buy, bringing the stake up to 125 million shares worth a little less than $3 billion.
The satellite radio outfit doesn't seem like the most promising of prospects. Its dividend yield is right around 5% now, though, and that's based on a dividend payment that's proven very reliable.
4. Constellation Brands
Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ) -- parent to beer brands like Modelo and Corona -- feels a bit out of place in Berkshire Hathaway's stock portfolio. It's also not performed all that well since Buffett started buying it late last year. Shares are down 40% from December's high. However, Buffett's used this weakness to purchase more shares, adding another 1.4 million shares in Q2 to bring the count up to 13.4 million. Clearly, Buffett and his lieutenants see something here, even if it's difficult for other investors to see.
5. Nucor
Berkshire Hathaway surprised a lot of people by jumping into a 5.8 million-share stake in steel company Nucor (NYSE: NUE) in the first quarter, following a decent-sized pullback. In retrospect, though, neither the trade nor the decision to add another 857,000 shares to the mix in the meantime is all that surprising. It's an attractive way to capitalize on whatever economic recovery is in the cards. Moreover, while it was initially blocked by then-President Joe Biden in January of this year, Japan's Nippon Steel's acquisition of U.S. Steel since then underscores the importance and value of this industry.
6. Lennar
Buying a stake in homebuilder D.R. Horton in Q1 of this year made a fair amount of sense at the time. Weakness in the U.S. real estate market has been a drag on the homebuilding sector, undermining the industry's stocks. But it's a cyclical business that will recover sooner or later.
Warren Buffett hasn't bought any more shares of D.R. Horton since then, though. Rather, Berkshire added to an existing position in rival Lennar's (NYSE: LEN) (NYSE: LEN.B) B shares in Q2. It has also opened an entirely new position in ordinary shares of this homebuilder just since the beginning of this year. As of the latest look, the conglomerate owns 7 million ordinary shares of Lennar collectively worth just under $800 million, plus another tiny position in Lennar's B shares.
The ultimate underlying idea is the same. This is largely a bet on the eventual recovery of the overall economy, which should bring real estate along with it.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that JPMorgan (along with others) says that the U.S. needs between 2.5 million and 5 million more homes than it currently has to offer residents. That's several years' worth of new home building that needs to be done to adequately meet demand.
7. Heico
Finally, put techno-industrial name Heico (NYSE: HEI.A) on the list of existing trades Buffett is adding to, even though he's keeping most of his powder dry.
It's not a very big position. Then again, it's not a very big company. Its market cap is less than $40 billion, while Berkshire Hathaway only owns about 1.3 million A shares worth roughly $300 million. That's about 1.5% of the entirety of Heico.
Still, it's worth highlighting simply because Buffett's seen fit to add to the position for two consecutive quarters now. Double-digit revenue and profit growth isn't anything unusual for this often-overlooked outfit that's proving to be indispensable to the aerospace sector. To Buffett's credit, the stock's weakness earlier this year has been unwound quite well since then.

Amid Warren Buffett's $340 Billion Warning to Wall Street, He Can't Stop Buying Shares of These 7 Stocks

Even though Buffett is set to retire at the end of this year, he and his investment team are still buying stocks for Berkshire's portfolio.

Lennar's housing demand
In the second quarter, Berkshire Hathaway purchased 5.1 million shares of Lennar (NYSE: LEN). The homebuilder has gone through a volatile period after rising interest rates on mortgage loans turned the housing market upside down. In the second quarter, its stock fell to about $100 from more than $180 in late 2024, but has recovered to about $120 as of Oct. 14.
Homebuilders are cyclical businesses, but Lennar has stood the test of time and turned into one of the leading players in the sector, generating $35 billion in revenue during the past 12 months. Net income during that period fell to $2.7 billion compared to about $3.9 billion in 2023 and $4.6 billion in 2022, which is due to increased costs and decreased home selling prices, which were hurt by higher interest rates.
Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway likely see Lennar as a cheap stock set for earnings growth if the Federal Reserve lowers interest rates further, which will bring down mortgage rates and help propel home prices higher. Lennar's price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) is just 12.7 even though its net income is currently depressed, which could make the stock cheap on a forward-looking basis. Plus, there is a major housing shortage in the U.S., which will give Lennar homebuilding demand for years to come.
Discounted beer brands
Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ) is an alcohol company focused on Mexican beer, with brands such as Pacifico, Modelo, and Corona rounding out its portfolio. Beer consumption in the U.S. is falling, which has caused the stock to decline 48% from all-time highs. Last quarter, the company's beer shipments declined 8.7% year over year.
Even though alcohol consumption has declined, Berkshire Hathaway likely sees a discounted sector with long-term pricing power in Constellation Brands. The stock trades at an enterprise value-to-EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) of just 11, which makes it look cheap for investors buying today.
Even if alcohol consumption declines for a few more years, it has been a mainstay in societies for centuries and can represent a durable asset for Berkshire Hathaway over the long term. With these high quality Mexican beer brands that are taking market share in the U.S., Buffett likely has a cheap stock in Constellation Brands that will do well by shareholders during the next decade.
Lower oil prices and an inflation hedge
The last of the three stocks Buffett has been buying is Chevron (NYSE: CVX), which is Berkshire Hathaway's fifth-largest holding.
Chevron is one of the oil and gas giants, an energy producer that has been around for decades. Although its performance is generally tied to the price of oil -- a commodity whose price has fallen by half since the Russia-Ukraine war started in 2022 and sent oil prices to $120 a barrel -- its stock is cheap and can be an inflation hedge for Berkshire.
At a P/E of about 20, Chevron doesn't seem like a bargain at first glance. However, this is because the company's net income has fallen to $14 billion during the past 12 months compared to more than $30 billion with the price of oil above $100. The shares still pay a dividend yielding 4.5% right now, with earnings set to soar if the price of oil begins to march higher.
Buffett may not describe Chevron as a wonderful business like American Express, but it is a nice asset to own during a bull market that can diversify your portfolio. Add the oil company if you want a stock as an inflation hedge for the next decade.

Warren Buffett Just Bought $1.33 Billion Worth of These 3 Stocks

Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Wednesday, shares of Financial companies are underperforming other sectors, showing a 0.3% loss. Within that group, Progressive Corp. (Symbol: PGR) and Allstate Corp (Symbol: ALL) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 7.0% and 4.8%, respectively. Among financial ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLF), which is flat on the day on the day, and up 11.24% year-to-date. Progressive Corp., meanwhile, is down 4.59% year-to-date, and Allstate Corp is up 5.01% year-to-date. Combined, PGR and ALL make up approximately 2.4% of the underlying holdings of XLF.
The next worst performing sector is the Consumer Products sector, showing a 0.2% loss. Among large Consumer Products stocks, Honeywell International Inc (Symbol: HON) and Constellation Brands Inc (Symbol: STZ) are the most notable, showing a loss of 2.4% and 2.1%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Consumer Products stocks is the iShares U.S. Consumer Goods ETF (IYK), which is down 0.3% in midday trading, and up 6.16% on a year-to-date basis. Honeywell International Inc, meanwhile, is down 8.36% year-to-date, and Constellation Brands Inc, is down 36.04% year-to-date. STZ makes up approximately 1.0% of the underlying holdings of IYK.

Warren Buffett has never paid much attention to what Wall Street analysts think. Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A) (NYSE: BRK.B) doesn't even hold a quarterly call with analysts. I doubt that Buffett's perspective will change during his remaining few months as Berkshire's CEO.
However, analysts hold favorable views of quite a few stocks in Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway portfolio. Here are the three Buffett stocks Wall Street thinks will soar the most over the next 12 months.

1. Charter Communications
Buffett only has a tiny stake in telecommunications company Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR). It made up less than 1% of Berkshire's portfolio at the end of the second quarter of 2025. The legendary investor (or one of his two investment managers) also seems to have soured on Charter. Berkshire slashed its position in the stock by 46.5% in Q2.
That move looks smart in retrospect. Charter's share price plunged after a disappointing Q2 update in July. The telecom provider's earnings fell well below analysts' estimates.
However, Wall Street seems to remain bullish about Charter. The average 12-month price target for the stock reflects an upside potential of over 40%.
Granted, not everyone on Wall Street is upbeat about Charter. Of the 22 analysts surveyed by S&P Global (NYSE: SPGI) in October, only 10 rated the stock as a "buy." Eight analysts recommended holding Charter, while the other four analysts gave the stock an "underperform" or "sell" rating.
2. Jefferies Financial Group
Jefferies Financial Group (NYSE: JEF) is an even smaller holding than Charter for Buffett. Berkshire's position in this financial stock totals only $23 million, which amounts to pocket change for the giant conglomerate.
Like Charter, Jefferies has been a loser for Buffett so far in 2025. The stock has taken investors on a rollercoaster ride that's currently on a downswing. However, Jefferies' share price has jumped more than 80% since the end of the third quarter of 2022, when Buffett initially bought the stock.
What does Wall Street think about this Buffett stock? It depends on how you look at things. On one hand, only one of the five analysts surveyed by S&P Global this month rated Jefferies as a "buy." Three analysts recommended holding the stock, with one rating it as a "sell."
On the other hand, the average 12-month price target for Jefferies is more than 30% above its current share price. The most bullish analyst projects that the stock could soar more than 60% over the next 12 months.
3. Constellation Brands
Buffett has been a net seller of stocks for 11 consecutive quarters. However, he liked Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ) enough to initiate a new position in the fourth quarter of 2024 and add more shares in the first and second quarters of 2025. Today, Berkshire owns 7.6% of the premium beer, wine, and spirits company.
How has Buffett's bet on Constellation Brands paid off so far? Not great. The stock has plunged more than 30% year to date. Steep tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on aluminum imports have significantly hurt Constellation.
But Wall Street remains supportive of this beaten-down alcoholic beverage stock. Fifteen of the 25 analysts surveyed by S&P Global in October rated Constellation Brands as a "buy" or "strong buy." Eight analysts recommended holding the stock, with two analysts recommending selling shares.
The consensus 12-month price target for Constellation Brands reflects an upside potential of more than 20%. One especially positive analyst expects the stock could jump more than 50% over the next year.
The best pick of these three Buffett stocks
I don't know if any of these three Buffett stocks will rise as much as Wall Street's price targets indicate they will over the next 12 months. However, I think one of these stocks could be the best long-term pick of the bunch -- Constellation Brands.
Tariffs on aluminum are certainly problematic for Constellation. The company should be able to successfully weather the storm, though. Constellation's Corona, Modelo, and Pacifico brands are among the strongest in the beer industry. I don't look for that to change.
This stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 12, which should appeal to value investors. Its dividend yield of roughly 2.9% could attract interest from income investors. Constellation Brands probably won't be an ideal choice for growth investors. But if Wall Street is right that the stock will soar more than 20% over the next 12 months, Constellation could outperform quite a few growth stocks.

3 Warren Buffett Stocks Wall Street Thinks Will Soar the Most Over the Next 12 Months

Consumer staples and food and beverage stocks are supposed to be effective defensive holdings during uncertain times.
The defensive thesis that food companies will remain stable because "people always have to eat" has been sorely tested by the tariff turmoil.
Some of the largest food and beverage stocks in the world have trailed the S&P 500 by as much as 50% since early April.
Contrary to conventional wisdom at the time, the stock market's sharp sell-off after President Donald Trump unveiled his "liberation day" tariffs on April 2 was relatively brief, and Wall Street recovered to a series of new highs over the six months that followed. But one segment that didn't benefit much from that tailwind was the typically defensive consumer staples sector. The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Trust (NYSEMKT: XLP) -- a benchmark for the sector -- has underperformed the large-cap S&P 500 index by more than 30 percentage points since early April, putting it dead last among the 11 major economic sectors. As of the close of trading on Oct. 3, the consumer staples sector was up by around 0.1% year to date, compared to a 33.7% gain for the S&P 500.
The six-month washout in the staples sector has been sweeping. Only two of the trust's 37 components have outperformed the S&P 500 since the tariff announcements -- Estée Lauder Companies, with its eye-popping 67% rebound, and Archer-Daniels-Midland, which jumped 44%. Otherwise, the slump within the sector has been brutal, with 16 of the trust's 37 stocks down by 10% or more since the tariff period began. The Motley Fool has continued to track what size tariffs Trump is imposing on each U.S. trading partner, but how those import taxes will affect specific American businesses has not yet become fully clear.

Food and beverage fallout
If you take a quick look through the 10 hardest-hit consumer staples stocks since April, you'll notice that nine of them are in either the food, beverage, or household products industries, with the lone exception being Tylenol maker Kenvue -- a personal-care stock which, of course, suffered its own Trump-related crisis last month.
If you remove Kenvue, the top five tariff tumblers remaining are all in the food and beverage groups, and all down at least 19% in the past six months.
1. Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ): down 19%
The importer and U.S. distributor of the popular Corona and Modelo beer brands -- and owner of a host of wine and spirits brands -- just reported results for its fiscal 2026 second quarter, which ended Aug. 31; operating income and net sales were down 13% and 15%, respectively, year over year.
In their commentary on the beverage giant's quarter, Constellation's CEO and CFO mentioned the word "tariff" 13 times, including a reference to "unfavorable fixed cost absorption from lower volumes, increased COGS [cost of goods sold] (inclusive of aluminum tariffs), as well as marketing investments to support the health and equity of our brands."
2. Hormel Foods (NYSE: HRL): down 20%
During its earnings report for its fiscal 2025 third quarter (which ended July 27), the Minnesota-based food company expressed disappointment that its top-line results did not translate into bottom-line growth due to the "unanticipated surges in commodity input costs." While management said it expects continued sales growth this quarter, due in part to price increases, "we expect profit recovery to lag into next year, with the near-term pressures we experienced in the third quarter persisting through the fourth quarter."
3. Molson Coors Beverage (NYSE: TAP): down 25%
The multinational brewing giant's Q3 earnings report will arrive on Nov. 4, and investors are eager for updates on sales and pricing, as well as earnings and margins, in light of the increased packaging costs it faces from Trump's 50% tariff on aluminum.
During the company's Q2earnings callon Aug. 5, management referred to the "challenging and volatile macro environment," saying: "As a result of the uncertainty around the effects of geopolitical events and global trade and immigration policies, consumer sentiment in the U.S. has remained at relatively low historical levels. This has continued to pressure consumption trends."
4. Keurig Dr. Pepper (NASDAQ: KDP): down 25%
The company's second-quarter conference call on July 24 included 10 different references to tariffs. Management cautioned that "the balance of 2025 will present challenges in the form of rising cost pressures, including from tariffs, that remain highly fluid, as well as continued consumer caution."
More specifically, the company warned that its U.S. coffee segment would face some challenges in the second half of the year. "Commodity inflation will build as we roll into the back half and we roll into our higher cost hedges on green coffee. The tariff impacts will become prominent ... and put some additional pressure."
5. Conagra Brands (NYSE: CAG): down 30%
In its recently reported results for its fiscal Q1 2026, which ended Aug. 24, the packaged-food giant reported a 5.8% year-over-year drop in revenue and a 26% decline in adjusted earnings per share, but kept its full-year guidance in place. In its presentation to investors, the company noted that inflation and weak consumer sentiment remained headwinds, saying that it continues to "navigate a challenging environment," and that it's "still dealing with persistent inflation and tariffs, both of which have drifted higher than our original expectations."
Conagra also clarified that while it still expected its gross tariff exposure to be about 3% of its cost of goods sold, it was nudging its total expected inflation rate -- core inflation plus the impact of tariffs -- from "about 7%" previously to a figure in the low 7% range, noting additional drag from weak consumer sentiment and value-seeking behavior.
A trio of headwinds
For now, as earnings season reports begin to roll in, investors will be highly tuned in to any updates from the front lines concerning a trio of interrelated challenges. These will be the costs of tariffs to businesses after whatever easy adjustments that are possible have been made, the effects of rising inflation on materials and supplies, and the impacts of an increasingly cautious consumer environment during the critical holiday quarter.

5 Consumer Staples Stocks That Are Feeling the Effects of President Trump's Tariffs

He's buying two stocks in different industries both facing macro headwinds.
One is still trading below Buffett's initial purchase price, and looks like a great opportunity.
Warren Buffett has never been afraid to go against the grain. He once summarized Berkshire Hathaway's investment strategy as, "We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful."
That's resulted in some very notable moves from the Oracle of Omaha over the last few years. As many large-cap stocks have seen their valuations climb higher and higher amid unbounded investor optimism, Buffett has been a notable seller. In fact, he's sold more stock than he bought for Berkshire Hathaway in each of the last 11 quarters.

The most notable stock sale in that period is Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), which at one point accounted for more than half of Berkshire's marketable equity portfolio. Buffett started selling the stock in late 2023, and he's since sold nearly 70% of Berkshire's stake in the business. In total, those stock sales raised an estimated $122 billion in cash based on the weighted average stock price. The actual sales price for each lot is unknown.
In the meantime, however, Buffett has started piling into two out-of-favor stocks, finding a few opportunities to be greedy where others are fearful.
Buffett's massive stock sale
Buffett's investment in Apple may go down as one of his greatest purchases of all time. He initially bought the stock in 2016, when investors were downbeat on the company's ability to keep growing. As a result, they assigned the stock a dirt cheap single-digit forward earnings multiple, which looked appealing to Buffett.
The stock has soared since then. The company's revenue and operating income continued growing and management has returned hundreds of billions back to shareholders through repurchases and dividends, supporting strong earnings-per-share growth.
But a good chunk of Apple's share price appreciation has come from multiple expansion. The stock now trades for 32 times forward earnings. While Apple has seen its operating margin expand thanks to its fast-growing services segment, and EPS gets an additional boost as it uses its massive free cash flow to buy back shares, that earnings multiple may be a bit of a reach for a value-focused investor like Buffett.
Buffett has a second reason for selling Apple, though. The current tax law requires Berkshire Hathaway to pay just 21% on its capital gains. That's the lowest corporate tax rate since the 1930s. Considering the rising debt level of the U.S. government, Buffett doesn't think that's a sustainable rate for very long, despite new tax legislation extending that rate this year.
So, an expensive stock and a low tax rate makes for an opportune time to lock in gains on a successful investment. While much of the cash raised from Berkshire's Apple sales has gone into short-term Treasury bills, Buffett has found a few stocks to buy in recent quarters. Since late 2024, he's put about $4 billion of Berkshire's cash to work in two stocks the market has beaten down.
Buffett's latest big buy
Last quarter, Buffett took the opportunity to add UnitedHealth (NYSE: UNH) to Berkshire's portfolio, investing about $1.5 billion into the stock by my estimate. Not only is UnitedHealth a member of an industry that hasn't seen stock multiples explode higher over recent years, it's also faced some headwinds that have resulted in many investors punishing the stock.
As with other health insurance companies, United has seen utilization rates increase while medical costs rise, producing a double whammy for its earnings results. The company's net margin fell to 3.1% last quarter, down from 4.3% a year ago. Moreover, management withdrew its financial outlook earlier this year before revising it down. It now expects full-year earnings per share of $16, down from $27.66 in 2024.
UnitedHealth also suffers from an overhang of an ongoing investigation into its Medicare Advantage program. If the courts rule against United, it could be on the hook to repay billions in premiums plus face additional fines.
Despite those headwinds, the company still holds considerable long-term competitive advantages in the industry thanks to the size of its network and the cost advantages of scale. With an aging population, the managed health services industry should experience strong growth over the coming years, and UnitedHealth is well positioned to take advantage of that trend.
A new position brewing in Berkshire's portfolio
Another big purchase for Buffett and his team over the last few quarters comes from an industry that's not necessarily great for your health. Since the fourth quarter last year, Berkshire's put an estimated $2.6 billion to work buying beer brewer Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ).
Constellation owns the rights to distribute top Mexican beer brands, Modelo, Corona, and Pacifico in the United States. Thanks in part to its national advertising campaigns to position those brands as premium beers, it absolutely dominates the market for imported beers.
Unfortunately, the entire industry faces several headwinds that are weighing on Constellation's earnings. 2025 has brought with it growing macroeconomic and sociopolitical uncertainty, especially among the Hispanic population that accounts for a huge portion of Constellation's sales. On top of that, younger Americans aren't as interested in drinking beer, favoring ready-to-drink cocktails and nonalcoholic beverages.
While Constellation was able to fend off those headwinds over the last few years, growing its market share while raising prices, the trends have caught up to it in 2025. Sales volume for its beer segment declined 7% last quarter, and management expects full year sales to fall 2% to 4%. Overall, management expects adjusted EPS to fall roughly 17% this year.
The strength of Constellation's brands and improvements in the macroeconomic environment should enable it to return to earnings growth over the long run. In the meantime, it's another opportunity for Buffett to add to a growing position.
It's worth noting Constellation Brands' stock remains below Berkshire's initial purchase price. UnitedHealth shares, meanwhile, have rallied higher since Berkshire's disclosure in August. As such, Constellation may present a better opportunity for investors looking to follow in Buffett's footsteps.
