Buy: American Express
Apple is still Berkshire's single-biggest stock holding. Through a combination of growth and attrition, though, credit card outfit American Express (NYSE: AXP) is now the organization's second-biggest trade at just over $47 billion.
Anyone keeping tabs on this ticker likely knows it's peeled back nearly 20% from December's record high, largely on worries that economic malaise is dragging down consumer spending, and even crimping their ability to repay their loans. For perspective, the New York Federal Reserve reports U.S. household debt now stands at a record-breaking $18.8 trillion, with delinquencies on this debt at a near-decade high of 4.8%. It doesn't bode well for a lender like Amex.
American Express may be better shielded from this trouble than you might think, however. As it serves more than its fair share of affluent borrowers, it's holding up in the midst of this headwind. Indeed, Amex cardholders' luxury spending grew 15% year over year during the fourth quarter, nearly doubling the 8% growth it saw in total billed business. This stock's 20% pullback may be all the discount you're going to get.
Buy: Constellation Brands
So far, the position that Berkshire Hathaway first established in beer maker Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ) back in late 2024 hasn't paid off. Shares of the company behind Corona and Modelo are down since then. In fact, Gallup reports that the proportion of people living in the United States who regularly consume alcohol now stands at a multidecade low of 54%.
This stock's sustained weakness, however, ignores a couple of important details about the booze business in general, and about Constellation in particular.
Broadly speaking, although the decision to cut back on alcohol consumption is rooted in a combination of cost and health, this is a highly cyclical business. The demand that's subdued now will be rekindled again sooner or later, perhaps when consumers are feeling more financially confident again.
In the meantime, the company has been going through a self-imposed overhaul, like last year's decision to divest some of its lower-priced wine brands that are more distracting than beneficial. Incoming CEO Nicholas Fink should also provide some fresh perspective regarding the direction that Constellation Brands needs to take next.
Avoid: DaVita
Not every pick that Buffett's been patient with is necessarily a great addition to your portfolio, however. Take kidney dialysis outfit DaVita (NYSE: DVA) as an example. When Berkshire Hathaway first bought into it back in 2011, business was good because demand was strong, and insurers were reasonable regarding reimbursement.
Much of that has changed for the worse in the meantime, though. Despite modest 5% year-over-year revenue growth through the first three quarters of fiscal 2025, net income is down 17%. It's a microcosm of the bigger-picture challenge the entire healthcare industry is facing these days.
This might convince you: After (mostly) leaving it alone for over a decade, Berkshire began steadily scaling out of this holding early last year. New CEO Greg Abel has already picked up where Buffett left off.

Wednesday Sector Laggards: Oil & Gas Exploration & Production, Beverages & Wineries

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Wednesday closed up +0.81%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.63%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +1.41%. March E-mini S&P futures (ESH26) rose +0.81%, and March E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQH26) rose +1.41%.
Stock indexes rallied on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 posting a 1.5-week high and the Nasdaq 100 posting a 2-week high. Strength in AI-infrastructure companies, software stocks, and chipmakers led the broader market higher. Stocks have carryover support from Tuesday, when AI startup Anthropic PBC eased AI disruption concerns after saying its new AI tools for its Claude Cowork agent software will integrate rather than displace existing systems. Also, optimism that Nvidia’s earnings results, released after Wednesday’s close, will show strong demand for its AI processors remains high. Bloomberg estimates Nvidia’s Q4 revenue to be $65.91 billion.

In Tuesday night's State of the Union address, President Trump doubled down on his commitment to tariffs. President Trump’s new 10% global tariffs went into effect on Tuesday after the Supreme Court struck down his global “reciprocal” tariffs last Friday. Mr. Trump subsequently threatened to raise the global tariff rate to 15%, and an administration official said the White House is working on a formal order to implement that higher rate, but the timeline for its implementation has not been finalized. Mr. Trump is applying the 10% baseline levy under Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act, which allows the president to impose the charge for 150 days without congressional approval.
Geopolitical risks remain a negative for stocks. Tuesday evening, President Trump said Iranian officials are "again pursuing their sinister nuclear ambitions," boosting speculation that the US may be preparing a military strike on Iran in the coming days. US-Iran nuclear talks are scheduled to resume on Thursday in Geneva, and Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi said he saw a “good chance” of a diplomatic solution to the standoff over his country’s nuclear program. Last Friday, President Trump said that he’s considering a limited military strike on Iran to ramp up pressure on the country to strike a deal over its nuclear program, and that he thought 10 to 15 days was “pretty much” the “maximum” he would allow for negotiations to continue.
US MBA mortgage applications rose +0.4% in the week ended February 20, with the purchase mortgage sub-index down -4.7% and the refinancing mortgage sub-index up +4.1%. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage fell -8 bp to a nearly 3.5-year low of 6.09% from 6.17% in the prior week.
St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem said Wednesday that the fed funds rate is near neutral and well-positioned to balance risks to employment and inflation.
The market’s focus this week will be on corporate earnings results and economic news. After Wednesday’s close, Nvidia will release its earnings results. On Thursday, initial weekly unemployment claims are expected to climb by +10,000 to 216,000. On Friday, the Feb MNI Chicago PMI is expected to slip -1.8 to 52.2.
Q4 earnings season is nearing its end, with more than 90% of the S&P 500 companies having reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 74% of the 453 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 2% chance for a -25 bp rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.
Overseas stock markets settled higher on Wednesday. The Euro Stoxx 50 rose to a new record high and closed up +0.93%. China’s Shanghai Composite climbed to a 3.5-week high and closed up +0.72%. Japan’s Nikkei Stock 225 rallied to a new all-time high and closed up +2.20%.
Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) on Wednesday closed down by -4 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield rose +1.9 bp to 4.048%. T-notes were under pressure on Wednesday from strength in stocks, which curbed safe-haven demand for government debt. Also, weak demand for the Treasury’s $70 billion auction of 5-year T-notes undercut T-note prices, as the auction had a bid-to-cover ratio of 2.32, below the 10-auction average of 2.37.
European government bond yields were mixed on Wednesday. The 10-year German bund yield was unchanged at 2.701%. The 10-year UK gilt yield rose +1.1 bp to 4.317%.
The German Mar GfK consumer confidence index unexpectedly fell -0.5 to -24.7, weaker than expectations of an increase to -23.0.
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance of a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
AI-infrastructure stocks and chipmakers rallied on Wednesday to support gains in the broader market. Western Digital (WDC) closed up more than +7%, and Seagate Technology Holdings (STX) closed up more than +6%. Also, Applied Materials (AMAT) closed up more than +4%, and Marvell Technology (MRVL) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Nvidia (NVDA), ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), KLA Corp (KLAC), and Micron Technology (MU) closed up more than +2%.
Software stocks were stronger on Wednesday, boosting the overall market. Thomson Reuters (TRI) closed up more than +10%, and Intuit (INTU) closed up more than +6%. Also, Datadog (DDOG) closed up more than +5%, and Palantir Technologies (PLTR), Cadence Design Systems (CDNS), Salesforce (CRM), and CrowdStrike (CRWD) closed up more than +3%. In addition, Microsoft (MSFT) and Atlassian (TEAM) closed up more than +2%, and Autodesk (ADSK), Adobe Systems (ADBE), and ServiceNow (NOW) closed up more than +1%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks rallied sharply on Wednesday as Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) surged more than +7%. Coinbase Global (COIN) closed up more than +13%, and Strategy (MSTR) closed up more than +8%. Also, MARA Holdings (MARA) closed up more than +6%, and Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) closed up more than +5%. In addition, Riot Platforms (RIOT) closed up more than +3%.
Homebuilding stocks retreated on Wednesday on disappointment that President Trump failed to mention any new policy initiatives to bolster the housing market in Tuesday evening’s State of the Union speech. Lennar (LEN) and PulteGroup (PHM) closed down more than -4%, and DR Horton (DHI) closed down more than -5%. Also, KB Home (KBH) closed down more than -2%, and Toll Brothers (TOL) closed down more than -1%.
Alcoholic beverage producers moved lower on Wednesday after Diageo Plc, the maker of Guinness beer and Johnnie Walker whiskey, cut its sales guidance due to further weakness in the US market. Brown-Forman Corp (BF.B) closed down more than -7%, Molson Coors Beverage (TAP) closed down more than -4%, and Constellation Brands (STZ) closed down more than -3%.
Circle Internet Group (CRCL) closed up more than +35% after reporting Q4 total revenue and reserve income of $770 million, stronger than the consensus of $747 million.
Cava Group (CAVA) closed up more than +26% after forecasting full-year restaurant comparable sales will climb +3% to +5%, stronger than the consensus of +2.75%.
Axon Enterprise (AXON) closed up more than +17% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of $2.15, well above the consensus of $1.56.
Albemarle (ALB) closed up more than +4% to lead lithium producers higher after Zimbabwe suspended exports of lithium concentrates and raw minerals.
Oracle (ORCL) closed up more than +1% after Oppenheimer upgraded the stock to outperform from perform with a price target of $185.
Oddity Tech Ltd (ODD) closed down more than -49% after saying it expects its revenue for the first quarter of 2026 to decline -30% year-over-year.
GoDaddy (GDDY) closed down more than -14% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting full-year revenue of $5.20 billion to $5.28 billion, the midpoint below the consensus of $5.28 billion.
CoStar Group (CSGP) closes down more than -8% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after forecasting Q1 adjusted EPS of 16 cents to 19 cents, weaker than the consensus of 25 cents.
MercadoLibre (MELI) closed down more than -8% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after saying it is heavily investing to build its own agentic AI tools, spurring concerns that the heavy spending on AI will pressure its margins.
Lowe’s (LOW) closed down more than -5% after forecasting 2027 adjusted EPS of $12.25 to $12.75, below the consensus of $13.00.
Kinsale Capital Group (KNSL) closed down more than -2% after BMO Capital Markets downgraded the stock to underperform from market perform with a price target of $348.

Interest Rates
March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) today are down by -5.5 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield is up +2.7 bp to 4.056%. T-notes are under pressure today from strength in stocks, which is curbing safe-haven demand for government debt. Also, supply pressures are bearish for T-notes as the Treasury will auction $70 billion of 5-year T-notes later today.
European government bond yields are moving higher today. The 10-year German bund yield is up +0.8 bp to 2.715%. The 10-year UK gilt yield is up +2.3 bp to 4.328%.
The German Mar GfK consumer confidence index unexpectedly fell -0.5 to -24.7, weaker than expectations of an increase to -23.0.
Swaps are discounting a 2% chance of a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on March 19.
US Stock Movers
AI-infrastructure stocks and chipmakers are climbing today to support gains in the broader market. Western Digital (WDC) is up more than +5%, and Lam Research (LRCX) and Seagate Technology Holdings (STX) are up more than +4%. Also, KLA Corp (KLAC) and Micron Technology (MU) are up more than +3%, and ASML Holding NV (ASML), Analog Devices (ADI), Broadcom (AVGO), and Marvell Technology (MRVL) are up more than +1%.
Cryptocurrency-exposed stocks are rallying today, with Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) up more than +4%. Coinbase Global (COIN) is up more than +5%, and Strategy (MSTR) is up more than +4%. Also, Galaxy Digital Holdings (GLXY) is up more than +3%, and MARA Holdings (MARA) and Riot Platforms (RIOT) are up more than +2%.
Alcoholic beverage producers are sliding today after Diageo Plc, the maker of Guinness beer and Johnnie Walker whiskey, cut its sales guidance due to further weakness in the US market. Brown-Forman Corp (BF.B) is down more than -8%, Molson Coors Beverage (TAP) is down more than -4%, and Constellation Brands (STZ) is down more than -3%.
Circle Internet Group (CRCL) is up more than +22% after reporting Q4 total revenue and reserve income of $770 million, stronger than the consensus of $747 million.
Cava Group (CAVA) closed up more than +20% after forecasting full-year restaurant comparable sales will climb +3% to +5%, stronger than the consensus of +2.75%.
Axon Enterprise (AXON) is up more than +15% to lead gainers in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 after reporting Q4 adjusted EPS of $2.15, well above the consensus of $1.56.
Albemarle (ALB) is up more than +8% to lead lithium producers higher after Zimbabwe suspended exports of lithium concentrates and raw minerals.
Lumen Technologies (LUMN) is up more than +6% after saying it is looking to expand adjusted Ebitda margins “from 27.1% in 2025 to approximately the mid 30% range by 2030.”
Oracle (ORCL) is up more than +1% after Oppenheimer upgraded the stock to outperform from perform with a price target of $185.
Oddity Tech Ltd (ODD) is down more than -53% after saying it expects its revenue for the first quarter of 2026 to decline -30% year-over-year.
GoDaddy (GDDY) is down more than -16% to lead losers in the S&P 500 after forecasting full-year revenue of $5.20 billion to $5.28 billion, the midpoint below the consensus of $5.28 billion.
MercadoLibre (MELI) is down more than -8% to lead losers in the Nasdaq 100 after saying it is heavily investing to build its own agentic AI tools, spurring concerns that the heavy spending on AI will pressure its margins.
Lowe’s (LOW) is down more than -4% after forecasting 2027 adjusted EPS of $12.25 to $12.75, below the consensus of $13.00.
Workday (WDAY) is down more than -3% after forecasting 2027 subscription revenue of $9.93 billion to $9.95 billion, weaker than the consensus of $10 billion.
Kinsale Capital Group (KNSL) is down more than -2% after BMO Capital Markets downgraded the stock to underperform from market perform with a price target of $348.

March 2027 Options Now Available For Constellation Brands (STZ)

Coca-Cola’s margins should improve if aluminum tariffs decline.
Constellation’s beer margins will stabilize, making its stock more appealing.
President Trump could soon roll back some tariffs on imported steel and aluminum products, according to The Financial Times. Those tariffs, which were raised from 25% to 50% last June, were imposed under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962. That means they won't be affected by the Supreme Court's recent ruling against Trump's country-specific tariffs, which were imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
President Trump is reportedly mulling lower tariffs for aluminum cans, steel appliances like ovens, and other consumer-oriented products. Two blue chip consumer staples stocks could benefit from those reductions: Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) and Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ).

How would lower tariffs help Coca-Cola?
Coca-Cola, the world's largest beverage maker, only sells concentrates and syrups for its flagship sodas and other drinks. It relies on a global network of independent bottlers to actually produce, distribute, and sell the finished products. That capital-light model enables it to maintain high gross margins and generate ample cash for dividends.
Coca-Cola isn't directly exposed to aluminum tariffs, but its bottling partners need to absorb those higher costs. As regional bottlers face higher costs, they'll likely raise wholesale prices, reduce promotions, and invest less in marketing and distribution. They could also push Coca-Cola to reduce its concentrate prices.
In other words, Coca-Cola's global sales will slow if those tariffs remain in place, and its margins could decline. That's why it recently said it would push its bottlers to sell more of its drinks in PET bottles if the aluminum tariffs aren't rolled back. However, abruptly ramping up PET bottle production would also likely crimp bottlers' near-term margins and generate additional headwinds. Therefore, reduced aluminum tariffs would benefit both Coca-Cola and its independent bottling partners.
How would lower tariffs help Constellation Brands?
Constellation Brands, one of the world's largest producers of beers, spirits, and wines, generates most of its revenue in the United States. It also imports its top beer brands -- including Corona, Modelo, and Pacifico -- from Mexico.
Nearly 40% of Constellation's beer shipments from Mexico come in aluminum cans. To offset those higher tariffs, it needs to raise its prices -- but it doesn't have much pricing power as it grapples with declining beer consumption (especially among younger consumers) across America. The recent economic and immigration-related pressures for Hispanic consumers, who account for about half of its beer sales, are exacerbating that pressure. Constellation faces other challenges, including declining sales of wines and spirits. Still, a reduction in aluminum tariffs would resolve one of its biggest challenges and make its stock more attractive again.

Interesting STZ Put And Call Options For October 16th

Forget last quarter’s earnings miss. American Express’ affluent cardholder base is keeping the company’s performance strong.
Apple shares have underperformed of late, mostly because it’s a technology name with an artificial intelligence (AI) business. The market, however, has thrown the proverbial baby out with the bathwater.
Buffett and Berkshire’s chief seem to know something about Corona and Modelo beer parent Constellation Brands’ business.
He may have stepped down from his role as CEO and chief stock picker as of the end of last year, but Warren Buffett's proverbial fingerprints are still all over Berkshire Hathaway's current portfolio. If you'd like to poach some of the Oracle of Omaha's last-known stock selections, there's still time.
To this end, here are three Berkshire holdings you might want to make a point of stepping into before the end of this month.

1. American Express
You may already know American Express' (NYSE: AXP) fourth-quarter earnings of $3.53 per share fell short of most expectations, dragging AXP's stock down more than 10% from its early-January peak. That's not a huge setback. However, it's uncharacteristically big for this particular ticker.
It's also a pullback that seems unlikely to last once more investors take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Not only was this credit card company's total revenue still up 9% year over year thanks to the resiliency of its more affluent cardholder base, but net income itself was still up 13% compared to the year-earlier Q4 bottom line.
AmEx is still pretty bullish on the year ahead, too, even if others aren't. It's looking for per-share earnings of between $17.30 and $17.90 in 2026, versus last year's final figure of $15.38.
This stock's recent weakness may just reflect more of the recent marketwide pessimistic mood than the crowd's actual opinion of American Express -- a dynamic that could be just as easily unwound.
2. Apple
Ditto for Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) (which at $63 billion is the only Berkshire holding currently bigger than its $52 billion position in American Express); this stock's down a bit from its early-December peak mostly because it's a technology name with a hand in the artificial intelligence (AI) movement. If you can look past that noise, the company's actually doing quite well again.
Take last quarter's iPhone revenue as an example. After years of stagnation, Apple's fiscal first-quarter iPhone sales grew 23% year over year to reach a record-breaking $85.3 billion.
And that's without the full lineup of AI tools that will eventually make the iPhone a truly powerful handheld personal assistant. Consumers are buying its smartphones en masse in anticipation of future releases of AI solutions.
3. Constellation Brands
Finally, add beer brewer Constellation Brands (NYSE: STZ) to your list of Buffett stocks to buy before February comes to a close.
It's one of Berkshire Hathaway's smaller positions as well as one of its newest, with the first purchase only being made in late 2024 before growing to a $2 billion stake in the middle of 2025. It's also a somewhat surprising addition to Berkshire's portfolio, in that the parent to beer brands Modelo and Corona has been struggling with consumers' waning interest in alcoholic beverages.
Its beer sales have slumped in each of the past four reported quarters, for perspective, while a recent Gallup poll indicates a record-low 54% of American adults say they drink at all. That's the chief reason STZ shares have performed so poorly of late.
What Warren Buffett and his lieutenant may be counting on here -- and rightfully so -- is that this highly cyclical business will ease back into growth again once the economy's back on a firmer footing. That's not a bad bet, either.
In the meantime, newcomers will be plugging into a respectable forward-looking dividend yield of 2.5%.

The S&P 500 Index ($SPX) (SPY) on Friday closed up +0.05%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DOWI) (DIA) closed up +0.10%, and the Nasdaq 100 Index ($IUXX) (QQQ) closed up +0.18%. March E-mini S&P futures (ESH26) rose +0.03%, and March E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQH26) rose +0.14%.
Stock indexes recovered from early losses on Friday and settled higher. Falling bond yields were bullish for stocks on Friday after US January consumer prices rose less than expected, which may prompt the Fed to keep cutting interest rates. The 10-year T-note yield fell to a 2.25-month low of 4.05% on the tame inflation news.

Also, a recovery in software stocks was supportive of the overall market. However, metal companies retreated on reports that the Trump administration is working to narrow its tariffs on steel and aluminum products.
Stocks initially moved lower today, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 posting 1-week lows. Worries over AI weighed on stocks and dampened market sentiment. Concerns have surfaced that the latest tools released by Google, Anthropic, and other AI startups are already good enough to disrupt many sectors of the economy, including finance, logistics, software, and trucking.
US Jan CPI rose +2.4% y/y, weaker than expectations of +2.5% y/y and the smallest pace of increase in 7 months. Jan core CPI rose +2.5% y/y, right on expectations and the smallest pace of increase in 4.75 years.
Q4 earnings season is in full swing, as more than two-thirds of the S&P 500 companies have reported earnings results. Earnings have been a positive factor for stocks, with 76% of the 371 S&P 500 companies that have reported beating expectations. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, S&P earnings growth is expected to climb by +8.4% in Q4, marking the tenth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Excluding the Magnificent Seven megacap technology stocks, Q4 earnings are expected to increase by +4.6%.
The markets are discounting a 10% chance for a -25 bp rate cut at the next policy meeting on March 17-18.

March 10-year T-notes (ZNH6) on Friday closed up by +12 ticks. The 10-year T-note yield fell -4.2 bp to 4.056%. Mar T-notes climbed to a 2.25-month high on Friday, and the 10-year T-note yield fell to a 2.25-month low of 4.045%. T-notes recovered from overnight losses and moved higher on the smaller-than-expected US Jan CPI increase, which is dovish for Fed policy. Also, bond dealer short covering boosted T-note prices as dealers lifted short hedges placed in T-note futures this week to hedge against the $125 billion of T-note and T-bond sales in the Treasury’s quarterly refunding.
European government bond yields moved lower on Friday. The 10-year German bund yield fell to a 2.25-month low of 2.753% and finished down -2.4 bp to 2.755%. The 10-year UK gilt yield slid to a 3.5-week low of 4.404% and finished down -3.6 bp to 4.416%.
The German Jan wholesale price index rose +0.9% m/m, the largest increase in a year.
Swaps are discounting a 3% chance of a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on March 19.

Software stocks rallied on Friday, helping lift the broader market. Crowdstrike Holdings (CRWD) closed up more than +4%, and ServiceNow (NOW) closed up more than +3%. Also, Salesforce (CRM), Palantir Technologies (PLTR), and Oracle (ORCL) closed up more than +2%. In addition, Adobe Systems (ADBE) closed up +0.54%, and Intuit (INTU) closed up +0.32%.

Also, Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF) and Nucor Corp (NUE) closed down more than -3%, and Alcoa (AA) closed down more than -1%.
Tri Point Homes (TPH) closed up more than +26% after being acquired by Sumitomo Forestry for about $4.28 billion, or $47 a share.
Rivian Automotive (RIVN) closed up more than +26% after reporting Q4 revenue of $1.29 billion, above the consensus of $1.26 billion, and forecasting full-year vehicle deliveries of 62,000 to 67,000, the midpoint above the consensus of 63,402.
