The company offers specialty plant nutrients, including potassium nitrate, sodium nitrate, sodium potassium nitrate, specialty blends, and other specialty fertilizers. It also provides iodine and its derivatives for use in medical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, and industrial applications comprising x-ray contrast media, polarizing films for LCD and LED, antiseptics, biocides and disinfectants, pharmaceutical synthesis, electronics, pigments, and dye components. In addition, the company offers lithium carbonates for various applications that include electrochemical materials for batteries, frits for the ceramic and enamel industries, heat-resistant glass, air conditioning chemicals, continuous casting powder for steel extrusion, primary aluminum smelting process, pharmaceuticals, and lithium derivatives, as well as ingredient in manufacturing of gunpowder. Further, it supplies lithium hydroxide for the lubricating greases industry, as well as cathodes for batteries. Additionally, it offers potassium chloride and potassium sulfate for various crops, including corn, rice, sugar, soybean, and wheat; industrial chemicals, including sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate, potassium chloride, and solar salts; and other fertilizers and blends. The company operates in Chile, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, North America, Asia, and internationally. The company was founded in 1960 and is headquartered in Santiago, Chile.

Albemarle is well-placed to gain from long-term growth in the battery-grade lithium market. The market for lithium batteries and energy storage remains strong, especially for electric vehicles (EVs), offering significant opportunities for the company to develop innovative products and expand capacity. Lithium demand is expected to grow on the back of significant global EV penetration.
Global EV sales surged 30% year over year this year through September 2025, driven by China and Europe battery electric vehicles, per the company. Lithium demand also rose 30% on the back of energy transition and higher global demand for EVs and grid storage. ALB expects lithium demand to rise at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15-30% from 2024 to 2030.
The company is strategically executing its projects aimed at boosting its global lithium conversion capacity. It remains focused on investing in high-return projects to drive productivity. Healthy customer demand, capacity expansion, and plant productivity improvements are supporting its volumes. ALB saw higher sales volumes in its Energy Storage unit in the third quarter of 2025 on record production from its integrated conversion facilities. The Salar yield improvement project in Chile has achieved a 50% operating rate. The ramp-up at the Meishan lithium conversion facility in China is also progressing ahead of schedule.
Albemarle is also taking aggressive cost-saving and productivity actions in the wake of tumbling lithium prices. The company expects to deliver roughly $450 million in cost and productivity improvements in 2025, having surpassed its initial target of $300-$400 million. ALB is taking actions to maintain its competitive position, including the initiation of a comprehensive review of cost and operating structure, optimization of the conversion network and reduction of capital expenditure. It has lowered the full-year 2025 capital expenditures outlook to around $600 million.
Strong Financial Health Supports ALB’s Capital Allocation
Albemarle remains committed to driving shareholder value by leveraging healthy cash flows and strong liquidity. At the end of the third quarter of 2025, ALB had liquidity of around $3.5 billion, including cash and cash equivalents of around $1.9 billion. Its operating cash flow was around $893.8 million for the first nine months of 2025, up 29% from the prior-year period. ALB expects to generate free cash flow of $300-$400 million in 2025, driven by strong cash conversion, lower capital spending and productivity measures.
The company remains focused on maintaining its dividend payout. It has raised its quarterly dividend for the 30th straight year. ALB offers a dividend yield of 1.4% at the current stock price. Backed by healthy cash flows and sound financial health, the company's dividend is perceived to be safe and reliable.
Soft Lithium Prices Ail ALB Stock
Weaker lithium market prices are weighing on the company’s performance. ALB’s revenues fell roughly 3.5% year over year to $1,307.8 million in the third quarter, hurt by lower prices in Energy Storage. Sales from its Energy Storage unit fell around 8% due to lower lithium market prices. Lithium prices have declined amid slowing demand growth for electric vehicles, inventory glut and increased supply. The uncertain macroeconomic environment and high interest rates have weighed on demand. Weaker lithium prices are likely to continue to hurt the company’s results in the fourth quarter.
ALB’s FY25 Estimates Reflect Positive Sentiment
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 for ALB has been revised upward over the past 60 days. The consensus estimate for the fourth quarter of 2025 has been stable over the same time frame.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 earnings is currently pegged at a loss of $1.24, suggesting a year-over-year increase of 47%. Earnings are expected to register a rise of roughly 30.3% in the fourth quarter.

As Reuters reports today, Ganfeng Lithium Group chairman Li Liangbin believes global lithium demand could grow 30% to 40% in in 2026.

More demand, higher prices -- and more profit
Lithium carbonate contracts on China's Guangzhou Futures Exchange surged 9% in response to Chairman Li's comments, closing at 95,200 yuan ($13,401.28) per metric ton Monday. This is the highest price per ton this battery component has fetched since June 2024.
And yet, the news for lithium miners could be even better. Following Reuters' report, Mining.com reports that Chairman Li predicts lithium prices could rise as high as 150,000 yuan, or even 200,000 yuan, per ton. Thus, a 30% to 40% rise in demand could translate into a 58% to 110% surge in lithium prices.
Assuming costs remain largely unchanged, the increase in profits for lithium stocks could be even greater.
Is SQM stock a buy?
Things were already looking up for SQM before this Reuters report came out. After losing money in 2024, analysts polled by S&P Global Market Intelligence predict SQM will earn $2.26 per share this year -- and grow profits 35% to $3.06 per share in 2026. And these analyst forecasts came before Chairman Li's prediction.
If he's right about demand and price growth in 2026, then SQM's profits could be even mightier.
Paying less than 35 times earnings (SQM currently has a 32.6 P/E ratio) for 35% earnings growth is the very definition of buying a value stock. Paying 32.6x for a company that might grow earnings more than 35% could be an absolute steal of a deal.
SQM stock sure looks like a buy to me.

The U.S. does not have a dependable supply chain for these minerals, which are largely mined and processed in China. And China has banned or restricted the export of some of these minerals to the U.S. So, the U.S. government is spending some big bucks to develop a more dependable critical minerals supply chain.
The Trump administration has even bought a stake in several publicly traded U.S. companies it considers essential to the nation's national security. This includes three critical minerals companies -- Lithium Americas, Trilogy Metals, and rare-earth elements company MP Materials (NYSE: MP) -- along with semiconductor maker Intel.
Why buy a critical minerals and rare earths ETF over individual stocks?
Mining stocks are particularly risky due to the very high cost and long process of developing and expanding mines. Buying an exchange-traded fund (ETF) can be a less risky way to gain exposure to critical minerals and rare-earth elements relative to buying individual stocks.

VanEck Rare Earth and Strategic Metals ETF: Overview
VanEck Rare Earth and Strategic Metals ETF (NYSEMKT: REMX), which began trading in 2010, is an index fund designed to track the performance of the MVIS Global Rare Earth/Strategic Metals Index, "which is intended to track the overall performance of companies involved in producing, refining, and recycling of rare earth and strategic metals and minerals."
Companies must derive at least 50% of total revenue from the rare-earth element/strategic metals industry to be added to the Index. The ETF has 29 stock holdings and a net expense ratio of 0.58%, which is reasonable, as of Oct. 23.

In trading on Friday, the VanEck Rare Earth/Strategic Metals ETF is outperforming other ETFs, up about 3.6% on the day. Components of that ETF showing particular strength include shares of MP Materials, up about 6.4% and shares of Sociedad Quimica Y Minera, up about 6.2% on the day.
And underperforming other ETFs today is the Global X MSCI Argentina ETF, down about 2.1% in Friday afternoon trading.
