3 Chemical Stocks Poised to Outshine Q4 Earnings Estimates

U.S. President Donald Trump recently launched “Project Vault,” a $12 billion strategic stockpile of critical and rare earth minerals aimed at insulating U.S. manufacturers from supply shocks. The reserve will source and store key inputs, such as rare earths, lithium, cobalt, copper and uranium.
The plan, announced from the Oval Office, brings together $2 billion in private capital and a $10 billion loan from the U.S. Export-Import Bank.
Rare earth miners and critical materials stocks such as MP Materials (MP), along with clean energy names like Bloom Energy BE, which rely on metals central to the global energy transition, jumped on the news, underscoring how policies that bolster the domestic supply chain can lift market confidence.
For investors, this policy adoption highlights a significant entry opportunity in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that hold upstream producers and developers, such as VanEck Rare Earth & Strategic Metals ETF (REMX) as well as clean energy ETFs like iShares Global Clean Energy ETF (ICLN), with critical minerals serving as the "bloodstream" for renewable hardware.
Before getting into the specifics of these ETFs, let us take a closer look at what drove the push for this strategic stockpile and how it benefits the ETFs mentioned above.
Strategy Behind Project Vault
While President Trump is known for favoring traditional energy policies, Project Vault is not primarily a clean energy initiative; its core drivers are national economic security and geopolitical strategy.
Apart from the clean energy industry, rare earth minerals also serve as a critical raw material for industries like defense, space and automotive. These elements are primarily used to create high-performance magnets, advanced electronics, and specialized alloys that enable modern technology, such as the F-35 fighter jet, electric vehicles (EVs) and satellites.
Thus, by framing critical minerals as an industrial necessity rather than a climate-only initiative, the administration aims to boost the future of American manufacturing.
This latest stance by the U.S. administration is a direct response to China's dominance, which controls about 60-70% of global rare earth mining and more than 90% of processing. A previous episode where China restricted exports during trade talks highlighted America's vulnerability.
To this end, it is imperative to mention that Trump has explicitly compared the stockpile to the petroleum reserve, framing it as a necessary safeguard for American industry against foreign leverage, ensuring businesses are "never harmed by any shortage."
Tailwinds for Clean Energy and Others
While the policy is rooted in security, the direct beneficiaries are battery manufacturing and clean energy companies. Rare earths like neodymium and dysprosium are essential for the permanent magnets found in EV motors and wind turbines.
Industry experts note that the critical next step will be transforming these raw materials into advanced components within the United States, fostering a resilient domestic manufacturing base for future technologies, ranging from EVs to humanoid robots. This creates a foundational material base that can accelerate the entire clean tech ecosystem, from miners like MP to wind turbine manufacturers like Iberdrola IBDRY, on the path of a multi-year growth cycle.
ETFs to Gain
For investors, Project Vault creates a compelling opportunity to gain exposure through the following ETFs:
VanEck Rare Earth & Strategic Metals ETF REMX
This fund, with net assets worth $2.56 billion, offers exposure to 32 companies involved in producing, refining, and recycling of rare earth and strategic metals and minerals. Its top five holdings include Albemarle Corp. ALB (8.30%), China Northern Rare Earth Group (7.02%), Lynus Rare Earth (6.68%), Xiamen Tungsten (6.24%) and MP (5.98%).
REMX has surged 118.8% over the past year. The fund charges 58 basis points (bps) as fees.
Global X Lithium & Battery Tech ETF LIT
This fund, with net assets worth $1.73 billion, offers exposure to 41 companies throughout the lithium cycle, including mining, refinement and battery production, cutting across traditional sector and geographic definitions. Its top five holdings include Rio Tinto RIO (22.50%), ALB (7.17%), Samsung SDI (4.57%), Sociedad Quimica y Minera SQM (4.05%) and Naura Technology Group (3.86%).
LIT has surged 76.4% over the past year. The fund charges 75 bps as fees.
Sprott Critical Materials ETF SETM
This fund, with net assets worth $509.6 million, offers exposure to 128 global securities in the critical materials industry. Its top five holdings include FreeportMcMoRan FCX (5.28%), NAC Kazatomprom (5.20%), Cameco Corp. CCJ (5.00%), ALB (4.61%) and Uranium Energy UEC (4.17%).
SETM has rallied 134.8% over the past year. The fund charges 65 bps as fees.
iShares Global Clean Energy ETF ICLN
This fund, with net assets worth $2.14 billion, offers exposure to 102 companies that produce energy from solar, wind, and other renewable sources. Its top five holdings include BE (11.28%), Nextpower NXT (9.73%), First Solar FSLR (7.15%), IBDRY (5.38%) and China Yangtze Power (4.34%).
ICLN has gained 65% over the past year. The fund charges 39 bps as fees.

Is the Lithium Winter Finally Over? The Bull and Bear Case For Lithium Stocks

After a tough 2025, the global lithium market is gearing up for a new growth cycle. Prices fell about 90% by mid-year from their 2022 peak levels as electric vehicle (EV) demand slowed and supply built up, but 2026 looks very different.
EVs will still drive demand, but new sources are joining the mix. Strong growth in solar power installations across Europe, the United States and the Asia-Pacific region is boosting the use of battery energy storage systems (BESS), which rely on lithium to store electricity from renewable energy.
Artificial intelligence is also creating a new need for lithium. Massive AI data centers use as much electricity as small cities, and many are now adding lithium-ion batteries on-site to handle peak energy use and reduce pressure on local grids. Autonomous machines and humanoid robots could become another steady source of lithium demand over the next decade.
Governments are taking notice, too. Many now treat lithium as strategic, like energy grids or defense equipment. This means governments may support production and investments, adding stability to the market.
Per Fortune Business Insights, the global lithium market is expected to expand from $13.9 billion in 2024 to $55.5 billion by 2032, implying a CAGR of nearly 19%.
While lithium prices have been under pressure, sentiment is turning. Lithium carbonate prices in China have rallied more than 20% so far this month. Major producer Ganfeng Lithium expects global lithium demand to grow 30-40% in 2026 and has flagged high price targets of 150,000-200,000 RMB/ton as the market moves back toward balance.
Against this backdrop, a few lithium stocks — Rio Tinto plc RIO, Lithium Americas Corp. LAC, Albemarle Corporation ALB and Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile S.A. SQM — are worth keeping on your watchlist.
Rio Tinto
Rio Tinto is making a serious push into lithium, aiming to become one of the world’s major producers. Earlier this year, the company completed its $6.7 billion acquisition of Arcadium Lithium, giving it access to one of the largest lithium resource bases globally. With Arcadium’s high-quality assets and broad product portfolio, Rio Tinto plans to grow capacity at its Tier 1 lithium operations to more than 200,000 tons of lithium carbonate equivalent per year by 2028.
Rio Tinto is also expanding its lithium footprint in South America. It acquired the Rincon project in Argentina in 2022 and made a $2.5 billion investment in the project in 2024. Rincon is expected to produce up to 60,000 tons of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually, with first production targeted for 2028 and a gradual ramp-up to full capacity.
In Chile, Rio Tinto has formed joint ventures with Codelco and ENAMI this year to develop high-grade lithium projects, strengthening its long-term supply pipeline.
For investors, Rio Tinto offers diversified exposure to lithium alongside its established global mining business. The stock sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). Lithium Americas
Lithium Americas is making a bold play on the U.S. lithium market with its Thacker Pass project in Nevada, home to the largest lithium resource in the country. This project plays a critical role in securing domestic lithium supply. Thacker Pass is expected to produce up to 40,000 tons of lithium carbonate per year, enough for roughly 800,000 electric vehicles. If fully realized, this output could push the United States to the world’s second-largest lithium producer. Phase 1 of the project is on track, with mechanical construction of the processing plant expected to finish by late 2027.
The project has also attracted strong government backing. In October, the U.S. Department of Energy (“DOE”) acquired a 5% stake in both Lithium Americas and the Thacker Pass joint venture. Lithium Americas also drew the first $435 million from a larger $2.23 billion DOE loan, fueling construction and securing funding for the next stages.
For investors looking at the lithium rebound, LAC stands out as a key domestic play. Its combination of scale, government support and a clear production roadmap positions it well to benefit from rising lithium demand in the coming years.
LAC carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). The Zacks Consensus Estimate for LAC’s next year’s bottom line suggests a year-over-year improvement of 42%.
Albermarle
Albemarle is one of the world’s top lithium producers, well-positioned to benefit from long-term growth in battery-grade lithium. The company is actively boosting its global lithium conversion capacity through strategic projects, focusing on high-return investments that improve productivity and efficiency. Production milestones are supporting growth. In Chile, the Salar yield improvement project has reached a 50% operating rate, while ramp-up at the Meishan lithium conversion facility in China is ahead of schedule. Record output from integrated conversion plants contributed to higher sales volumes in Albemarle’s Energy Storage unit in the third quarter of 2025.
Albemarle is also streamlining operations, cutting costs and optimizing its conversion network to maintain a strong competitive edge. In 2025, these initiatives are expected to deliver around $450 million in cost and productivity gains, exceeding the initial target of $300-400 million.
With robust customer demand, expanded capacity and efficiency improvements, ALB is positioned to capture rising lithium demand globally. Its scale, diversified operations and focus on cost management make it a key player for investors looking to ride on the lithium rebound in 2026.
ALB carries a Zacks Rank #3. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for ALB’s 2026 EPS implies a year-over-year jump of 217%.
Sociedad Quimica
Sociedad Química is one of the noted producers of lithium, supplying battery and energy storage markets worldwide. Its scale and global footprint make it a key player as lithium demand rebounds.
SQM has built a highly diversified lithium platform across Chile, Australia and China. In Chile, the company is expanding operations at the Salar de Atacama, targeting lithium carbonate production of 240,000 metric tons by 2026. It is also ramping up lithium hydroxide capacity to 100,000 metric tons by the end of 2025.
In Australia, SQM is advancing the Mt. Holland project, a 50,000-metric-ton lithium hydroxide operation developed through a joint venture, while pursuing additional exploration projects. In China, the company operates a lithium hydroxide refinery and tolling facility with 40,000 metric tons of capacity, strengthening its downstream reach and global supply chain.
SQM expects long-term lithium demand to outpace supply and has already completed major capacity upgrades. With these improvements in place, the company believes it can grow market share, especially in supplying lithium for EV batteries.
For investors, SQM offers scale, diversification and strong leverage to a lithium market recovery. The stock carries a Zacks Rank #3. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for SQM’s 2026 EPS indicates a year-over-year surge of 117%.

Chinese moves the market
The Bureau of Natural Resources in Yichun, Jiangxi Province, plans to cancel 27 lithium mining permits in January, as Mining.com reports today. Lithium prices in China reacted immediately, rising 7.6% Wednesday, and this pushed global lithium mining stocks higher.
Granted, "all of the licences had already expired, some more than a decade ago, and most were registered for ceramic clay or limestone mining," as Mining.com observes. And that raises a question: Will this really impact lithium prices?
Lithium analysts don't think so. One analyst is quoted saying, "the licence cancellations would have little impact on supply, as none of the revoked permits covered operating mines." Yet, as long as the licenses remained active, mining might potentially have resumed at any of the sites, legally, and that would add to the global lithium supply. It can't happen now until the licenses are officially renewed.
Long story short: The chance of lithium supply growing just got a little smaller -- and the chance of lithium prices rising in the future got a little bigger.
Is SQM stock a buy?
That's good news for investors in Sociedad Quimica, aka "SQM," and here's even better news: SQM is one of the few lithium companies that's already profitable without these potential price hikes. Last year, SQM earned $525 million, and generated positive free cash flow to boot.
Valued at 35 times trailing earnings, SQM isn't exactly "cheap," but if you're betting on a lithium price boom, SQM is a much better bet than most alternatives.

Why Sociedad Quimica Y Minera de Chile Stock Popped Today

In trading on Wednesday, the VanEck Rare Earth/Strategic Metals ETF is outperforming other ETFs, up about 2.9% on the day. Components of that ETF showing particular strength include shares of Sigma Lithium, up about 6.5% and shares of Sociedad Quimica Y Minera, up about 5.1% on the day.
And underperforming other ETFs today is the VanEck Semiconductor ETF, down about 2.9% in Wednesday afternoon trading. Among components of that ETF with the weakest showing on Wednesday were shares of Broadcom, lower by about 5.2%, and shares of ASML Holding, lower by about 4.4% on the day.
