Serving more people
SoFi added 1.1 million new members during the second quarter. That brought its total to 15.8 million by quarter's end, representing a 35% year-over-year gain.
The fintech provider saw its products -- individual financial accounts or offerings -- grow at an even faster pace than new members, with a record 2.2 million product additions in the quarter. That brought its total to 24.4 million products, up 42%.
"For the first time, we added twice as many products as members, a major milestone that underscores the trust members place in SoFi and the power of our everything app," CEO Anthony Noto said.
All told, SoFi's adjusted net revenue jumped 40% to $1.2 billion. The company's adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), in turn, increased 44% to $358 million.
Raised guidance
Additionally, SoFi boosted its full-year adjusted net revenue forecast to $4.75 billion to $4.85 billion, signifying growth of 32% to 35%. Management also reaffirmed its guidance for adjusted EBITDA of $1.6 billion and net income of $825 million, or $0.60 per share.
Yet investors were still unsatisfied.
If there was one blemish on Sofi's otherwise solid Q2 report, it was a 23% decline in technology platform revenue to $85 million, which management attributed to the loss of a large client in late 2025.
But overall, the downturn in Sofi's share price was likely due to the sky-high expectations the market has for its performance -- and the difficulty in meeting them.

Looking at options trading activity among components of the Russell 3000 index, there is noteworthy activity today in SoFi Technologies Inc (Symbol: SOFI), where a total volume of 684,445 contracts has been traded thus far today, a contract volume which is representative of approximately 68.4 million underlying shares (given that every 1 contract represents 100 underlying shares). That number works out to 83.3% of SOFI's average daily trading volume over the past month, of 82.1 million shares. Especially high volume was seen for the $15.50 strike call option expiring July 31, 2026, with 35,451 contracts trading so far today, representing approximately 3.5 million underlying shares of SOFI. Near-term profitability concerns seem to be overshadowing an otherwise stellar quarter.
SoFi (NASDAQ: SOFI) just reported its second-quarter earnings, and the numbers look generally strong. In fact, the company posted all-time records for member growth, revenue, and several other key metrics.
Despite the solid earnings report, SoFi's stock fell by about 10% in reaction to the report. Here's a look at some of the most important numbers from the second quarter, and why the stock may be falling despite the strong results.

A record-setting quarter
On the top line, SoFi reported $1.2 billion in net revenue, up 43% year-over-year and well ahead of analyst estimates. Earnings per share came in at $0.12, also significantly above estimates.
Adjusted EBITDA grew by 44% to an all-time high and represented the 19th consecutive "rule of 40" quarter for the company, showing that the company's track record of profitable growth is still intact.
During the second quarter, SoFi added 1.1 million members (the highest single-quarter total yet), and now has 15.8 million people in its ecosystem. More importantly, SoFi's cross-buying success is accelerating. 51% of all new products were opened by current customers, up from 43% in the first quarter and 35% a year ago.
Additionally, SoFi's loan originations reached an all-time high of $14.8 billion, with solid growth across personal, student, and home loans. Despite the growth, credit quality improved, with SoFi's annualized personal loan charge-off rate down 21 basis points year over year.
Why is SoFi's stock down?
As far as the second quarter results go, there isn't much to dislike. But one potential reason for the negative reaction is concern about SoFi's profitability. On one hand, management raised revenue guidance for the full year. But on the other hand, guidance for adjusted EBITDA and earnings per share was held constant. In other words, shouldn't more revenue mean more profit as well?
In a CNBC interview following the earnings announcement, SoFi's CEO, Anthony Noto, said that the bank's expectations have shifted to two rate hikes this year (compared with two rate cuts at the beginning of the year), which has made the company hesitant to raise EPS guidance.
After today's decline, SoFi stock trades at its lowest price-to-book valuation in more than a year and at 23 times forward earnings, a rather low multiple given the company's top-line growth rate of more than 40%.
In a nutshell, this was an extremely solid quarter overshadowed by near-term profitability concerns. If you're a believer in the long-term potential of SoFi's business, now could be a smart time to take a closer look.

The internet, smartphones, and digital payments have made a once-stodgy industry -- banking -- much more competitive in the 21st century. New financial technology (fintech) players like Nu Holdings (NYSE: NU) have built consumer banking businesses entirely on smartphones. At the same time, legacy giants like JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) continue to generate gobs of profits through highly diversified financial services offerings.

Big bank reliability
The big banks like JPMorgan have sticky relationships with customers, ranging from individuals to some of the world's largest corporations. Customers flock to big banks for their branding, their balance sheets, and the variety of services they offer.
With diversified revenue streams, JPMorgan has been consistently profitable for the last 10 years, generating a record net income of nearly $65 billion over the last 12 months. This stems from its offerings in commercial banking, investment banking, consumer banking (through the Chase brand), and asset management for wealthier clients.
As the global economy grows, so should JPMorgan's lending and banking services. The more deposits it houses on its balance sheet -- total assets grew to $3.7 trillion last quarter -- the better able the bank is to make loans and other investments. For example, last year the company committed $1.5 trillion to making loans and direct investments over the next 10 years in sectors relevant to U.S. national security.
JPMorgan trades at a price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of about 15, with a dividend yield of 1.7%. It is not as cheap as it has been historically, but I believe its investors will see slow, steady gains and solid dividend income.
Growing fintech revenues
On the other end of the banking spectrum are fintech disruptors such as Nu Holdings, which operates the Nu Bank brand. It is an entirely digital banking application that has quickly grown into a leadership position in Latin American countries such as Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia, with plans to enter the U.S. market in the near future once it obtains a banking license.
Nu Bank is much smaller than a big bank like JPMorgan, with $42 billion in deposits at the end of last quarter. However, the business is growing quickly, with 135 million banking customers, having been founded only in 2013. In the last three years, its revenue has increased by 170%, a much faster growth rate than JPMorgan's cumulative growth of 31%.
From a business model standpoint, Nu Bank is less diversified than JPMorgan, depending heavily on consumer credit card spending and on personal loans to Brazilians and Mexicans, making it a riskier investment. At the same time, it trades at a P/E ratio of 22, which is not overly expensive but slightly higher than what one sees looking at the big banks.
Which is the better buy?
An older investor seeking dividend income and steady earnings may favor JPMorgan over fintech disruptors such as Nu Holdings. On the other hand, investors who want to take a little more risk may favor a growth stock like Nu Holdings or other fintech players such as SoFi Technologies. Nu Bank is nowhere near the household name that JPMorgan is, but it is a smaller company with a strong track record of growth that could deliver multibagger gains.
For my money, an investor with a decade-long time horizon will do better owning Nu Holdings stock. It trades at a P/E ratio only slightly higher than JPMorgan's and is growing rapidly. Even though it has a shorter history as a bank (it is hard to compete with the hundred-plus years of brand building at JPMorgan Chase), this risk is more than offset by its growth potential.

4 Stocks Worth Loading Up on Before Earnings Hit

After a couple of years of beating the market, SoFi Technologies (NASDAQ: SOFI) has lost its momentum. The fintech specialist's shares have declined 39% since January. What's more, there are still potential risks ahead that could send the stock even lower. Should investors buy SoFi's shares at current levels, or is it best to stay far away from the company right now?

What's going on with SoFi?
SoFi encountered several headwinds this year. Here are three of them. First, the fintech leader was the target of a short-seller report that made alarming allegations. The author of the report, Muddy Waters, an activist short-selling firm, claimed, among many other things, that SoFi inflated its profitability through questionable accounting practices, including overstated loan values.
Second, SoFi's financial results and guidance haven't been as strong as the market anticipated. Third, SoFi appears to be overvalued, even after the stock's decline this year. The company's shares are trading at 28.1x forward earnings, versus an average of 15.2x for financial stocks. Given these headwinds, can SoFi recover?
The path forward
Although SoFi's financial results haven't been quite up to market standards this year, they aren't terrible, not by any means. In the first quarter, the company's total revenue increased 43% year over year to $1.1 billion, while its earnings per share rose 100% to $0.12. Many investors expected more, especially given the company's valuation. But the company's forward price-to-earnings has declined significantly and is now about as low as it has been at any point over the past couple of years, and well below its average for this period.
True, it is still above the industry average, but SoFi is growing revenue and earnings much faster than many of its peers, suggesting it is worth a premium. It's also worth noting that the company's ecosystem continues to expand. In the first quarter, SoFi had 14.7 million members, up 35% year over year. Product growth is also strong, rising 39% year over year to 22.2 million in the period.
But notice that this means the company has only 1.5 products per member, granting it significant room to grow its revenue by cross-selling additional services to its existing user base. SoFi could also see growth accelerate as it launches new products and services, while the company is arguably slowly building a moat through switching costs that will only deepen as its members sign up for more products. With that said, what should investors make of the short-seller report?
SoFi's management strongly denied Muddy Waters' claims. That doesn't mean they are false, but Muddy Waters, like all short-sellers, also has something to gain from SoFi's falling stock price. It's worth keeping an eye on that saga, but for now, my view is that it shouldn't weigh too much on the stock. There are other reasons SoFi remains somewhat risky to invest in, including its heavy reliance on personal loans. The stock will likely be volatile moving forward, whichever way it moves. For investors comfortable with heightened risk, it's worth initiating a small position in the company today.

Is SoFi Technologies Stock a Bargain After Its Big Drop, or a Falling Knife?

SoFi was punished when it didn't raise guidance after the first quarter, but it has a chance to fix that error next week.
Nobody -- and I mean nobody -- likes high interest rates. The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage is 6.55%, which is a huge difference from just five years ago, when rates were under 3%. And they don't appear to be headed down anytime soon.
But for investors, you can find a silver lining in bank stocks. That's because, while interest rates cause some pain for consumers, they can provide extra profits to banks and other lending institutions.

Banks make a portion of their money from the spread between what they pay depositors and what they earn by lending that money to consumers and businesses. When interest rates are up, as they are now, banks can charge more for mortgages, credit cards, vehicle loans, and commercial loans. That potentially means more net income for the bank and greater profits when banks report quarterly earnings.
Three interesting bank stocks to consider in July's high-interest rate environment are Bank of America (NYSE: BAC), PNC Financial Services (NYSE: PNC), and SoFi Technologies (NASDAQ: SOFI).
Bank of America: The big bank
Bank of America is one of the biggest banks in the U.S., with more than 3,600 banking locations and 15,000 ATMs. The bank offers consumer, business, and wealth management services -- all divisions that saw solid growth in the second quarter. Every division recorded double-digit net income growth, CEO Brian Moynihan said.
Bank of America reported that it added 160,000 net new checking accounts, opened 1 million new credit card accounts, and its customer investment and wealth management balances rose 12% from a year ago to $4.9 trillion.
Revenue in the second quarter was $31.6 billion, up 15.3% from a year ago. Net income of $9.1 billion was up 26.4%, and earnings per share improved from $0.84 to $1.21.
Bank of America is one of the best big bank stocks you can buy, and its dividend of 1.8% contributes to a total return of 12.5% so far this year.
PNC Financial Services Group: The regional bank
PNC is still considered a regional bank, but if it keeps expanding, the market may need to reconsider that designation. The Pittsburgh-based company has a broad reach -- it has locations coast-to-coast, operating 2,300 branches. In January, PNC completed its $4.1 billion acquisition of FirstBank, which allowed it to add nearly 100 branches in Arizona and Colorado as it seeks to gain a larger foothold in the western U.S.
Second-quarter earnings showed revenue of $6.87 billion, up from $5.66 billion a year ago. Net income was $2.05 billion, up from $1.64 billion, and earnings per share were $4.81 versus $3.85 a year ago.
The dividend yield is currently 3.2%, helping push the stock to a 22.8% overall gain in 2026.
SoFi Technologies: Down, but not out
SoFi stock is down more than 30% so far this year, having taken a solid beating when management chose not to increase guidance in its first-quarter earnings report. But it has a compelling story.
SoFi is a different kind of bank, operating as an online-only institution while also providing personal loans, mortgages, investments, and credit card services. Its customers also have access to more than 55,000 ATMs at no charge.
SoFi still hasn't issued its Q2 results -- that won't happen until July 29. But in the first quarter, SoFi reported more-than-solid results, with revenue of $1.1 billion, up 43% from a year ago, net income of $155.7 million, up 134%, and earnings per share doubling from $0.06 to $0.12 per share.
If SoFi has another solid quarter and, this time, raises guidance, SoFi stock will be poised to close the month on a high note.
