How Competitors Fare Against RDDT
Despite Reddit’s expanding portfolio, the company faces stiff competition from Meta Platforms META and Snap SNAP. Both Meta Platforms and Snap are also expanding their footprint in the rapidly growing digital ad market.

An $18 billion fine over the next decade is not a big deal for a megacap like Meta Platforms.
While Meta says it plans to significantly limit how teens use its platforms, teens don't account for a significant portion of its revenue.
It's a different story for Snap, which was recently sued by the Pennsylvania attorney general over allegations regarding teen usage.
In what is being referred to as potentially social media's "Big Tobacco moment," Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) recently announced an agreement with 52 attorneys general under which the parent company of Facebook and Instagram will pay up to $18 billion over the next decade and significantly change its policies for teen users.
While the fine would be the largest consumer-protection settlement ever, excluding Big Tobacco, most Wall Street analysts and experts believe Meta avoided what could have been a vastly larger financial settlement.

But the ramifications from this landmark teen-safety lawsuit could be far worse for social media company Snap (NYSE: SNAP). Here's why.
What the Meta settlement means
Per the agreement, Meta will pay $12.7 billion to the participating states and U.S. territories in the lawsuit in annual installments over the next decade. The remaining $5.3 billion will be paid based on two conditions: Alphabet's YouTube and TikTok must apply some of the same changes that Meta is making for teens, and those companies must collectively pay a matching $5.3 billion.
Most analysts considered the agreement fairly benign because, before it was agreed to, the maximum damages Meta faced were supposedly as high as $1.4 trillion, with state attorneys general realistically targeting a figure somewhere in the $200 billion range.
Perhaps the more significant part of the case concerns the changes Meta agreed to make to its platform relating to teen usage. Meta plans to limit teen usage to two hours per day across its platforms, and this limit can only be turned off with a parent's permission. Teens will also not be allowed to use Meta's apps between midnight and 6 a.m., and, by default, notifications will be muted between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., during school hours.
Other changes include preventing teens from seeing the number of likes and reactions on their posts, and eliminating cosmetic surgery and extreme makeup filters.
Many questions remain about how effective these changes will be and how easily teens will be able to get around them. But it's worth noting that Meta doesn't generate significant revenue from teens. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified that teens account for only 1% of the company's revenue and that Meta generates nearly all of its revenue from advertising.
I'm not sure that fully quantifies how much advertising revenue teen audiences actually generate for Meta's social media platforms, but the consensus on Wall Street is that this is not an overly punitive outcome for Meta, at least compared to what it could have been.
Why it could be a bigger deal for Snap
Snap is nowhere near as big a company as Meta, with a market cap of roughly $9.4 billion as of this writing. Through the first six months of the year, Snap has generated about $3.1 billion of revenue.
But it also looks like Snap will soon face similar charges to the ones Meta just addressed.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday recently announced that the state is suing Snap for allegedly failing to be truthful with parents about the type of content teens were exposed to on Snapchat. Furthermore, the lawsuit accuses Snap of using addictive features to keep younger users engaged. The stock initially sank on the news.
Snap is much more reliant on younger users than Meta. Back in April, a Pew Research report showed that teens were using Snapchat for messaging more frequently each day than TikTok or Instagram. Teens also reported posting more frequently on Snapchat than on other platforms.
A study from Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health conducted in 2022 and published in 2024 found that 41% of Snapchat's overall revenue came from users under 18. That was the largest share of revenue from that age group among similar platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram.
Snap already faces significant challenges. The stock is down nearly 80% since its 2017 IPO due to a lack of profitability, competition, an inability to grow high-quality customers, and shareholder dilution.
Investors may have anticipated that Snap could face fallout from similar issues to those that Meta is facing, but usage restrictions like those being implemented at Meta could be far more detrimental to Snap's business and revenue.

Meta Platforms May Have Escaped the Worst of a Landmark Teen-Safety Lawsuit. But the Ramifications Could Be Much Worse for Snap.

Reddit RDDT shares have plunged 14.7% in the past three months, underperforming the broader Zacks Computer & Technology sector’s 4.4% decline. The Zacks Internet - Software industry has increased 6.4% in the same time frame.
The company shares have also underperformed its peers, which include Pinterest PINS, META Platforms META and Snap SNAP. These companies are expanding their footprint in the digital advertising market. Shares of Pinterest have gained 2.8%, while Meta Platforms and Snap have lost 7.2% and 6.7%, respectively, in the trailing three-month period.
The decline can be attributed to choppy and declining search referral traffic, particularly late in the second quarter of 2026, which led to a slight decrease in daily active users and heightened volatility. Low visibility into external search trends also remains a headwind. Challenging macroeconomic uncertainties and stiff competition in the digital advertising market remain concerns.

In the second quarter of 2026, Global average revenue per unique (ARPU) jumped 36% year over year to $6.18. U.S. ARPU surged 51% to $11.85, while international ARPU increased 31% to $2.26.

Should You Hold on to RDDT Stock Despite Its 15% Dip in Three Months?

Snapchat continues to lose money. It hinted at positive net income in 2027, but user base trends suggest that it will be temporary.

Meta Platforms continues to grow much faster than Snapchat despite having far more market share, and the former's AI investments might give the latter fewer opportunities to catch up.
Growth investors are OK with trading off profits for high revenue growth as long as losses get smaller over time. That setup implies that a company can eventually become profitable.
However, if a company remains unprofitable for 15 years, it's best to stay on the sidelines. Snapchat (NYSE: SNAP) fits that category. It's still unprofitable despite having 971 million monthly active users (MAUs). The stock is down by more than 30% year to date.

Margins have been improving, but it's also been too long
Snapchat delivered second-quarter results that revealed 19% year-over-year revenue growth and narrowing losses. It's a good combination for any growth stock, but investors have every right to be impatient with a company that has remained unprofitable for 15 years.
Still, net losses came in at $164 million compared to $1.6 billion in revenue. That's a negative net profit margin of roughly 10%. It's still not growing as fast as Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META), which delivered 28% year-over-year revenue growth in Q2 2026.
Snapchat anticipates $300 million to $350 million in adjusted EBITDA in the third quarter. That doesn't translate into positive net income, though it's an improvement from the $250 million in adjusted EBITDA during the second quarter. Leadership anticipates positive net income in 2027. A "multi-year dilution management program" beginning in 2027 may undo some of the benefits of positive net income.
The company has done a good job of keeping costs in control as other tech companies scramble to increase their AI spending. Snapchat may fall behind on compelling long-term opportunities because of that decision, but it's a prudent one given the company's financials.
User activity is declining in key regions
One of Snapchat's strengths and weaknesses is its 971 million monthly active users. It's a large user base Snapchat can tap into for additional revenue growth, but that also means the company has fewer opportunities to meaningfully grow its user base.
For instance, Snapchat's 971 million MAUs represent a 4% year-over-year growth rate. It's also adding users at a slower rate. Between Q1 2025 and Q2 2025, Snapchat added 19 million MAUs. Looking at Q1 and Q2 2026, Snapchat added only 15 million MAUs.
The positive year-over-year growth rate also masks declining growth rates in North America and Europe, two of Snapchat's most critical markets. Its daily active users in North America are down by 6% year over year and have been steadily declining for multiple quarters. European DAUs are down by 2% year over year and have been flat for multiple quarters.
The U.S. accounted for 59% of Snapchat's Q2 revenue, and Europe made up 22% of total revenue. Sure, DAUs across the rest of the world continue to grow, but ARPU remains much lower than in the U.S. and Europe. The ARPU for non-U.S. and non-European regions is only $1, while the ARPU is $10.26 in the U.S.
This long-term trend does not look good for Snapchat, and if it's not reversed, potential profits in 2027 may not last for long.

Snapchat Is Still Losing Money 15 Years Later Despite 971 Million Monthly Average Users

Meta Platforms META is strengthening its AI infrastructure with more efficient cooling technology as rising compute demand makes data-center efficiency increasingly critical.
Building on this momentum, the company recently announced that it is using closed-loop liquid cooling across the majority of its newest AI-optimized data centers to efficiently manage heat generated by increasingly powerful GPUs. The system circulates a water-and-glycol coolant through servers and heat exchangers before reusing it, significantly reducing ongoing water consumption. Meta Platforms expects the coolant to remain usable for up to a decade. Direct-to-chip cooling also enables higher GPU density within server racks, supporting greater computing capacity without substantially expanding data-center space.
Meta Platforms is additionally using reinforcement learning to optimize cooling operations across facilities. In a data-center pilot, this approach reduced energy consumed by air-cooling supply fans by an average of 20% and lowered water consumption by 4% across varying weather conditions.
These efficiency gains are expected to support Meta Platforms’ broader AI infrastructure expansion as it scales increasingly compute-intensive models and services. The company is deploying AI across recommendations and advertising while developing personal agents, business agents and enterprise offerings, creating multiple avenues to monetize its growing compute capacity. Meta Platforms believes near-term AI capacity remains highly valuable, with numerous ROI-positive opportunities across its core business.
In the second quarter of 2026, Meta Platforms has spent $31.1 billion on capital expenditures, primarily for servers, data centers and network infrastructure. The company expects full-year 2026 capital expenditures of $130-$145 billion as it works to maximize computing capacity during 2026 and 2027.
META Faces Stiff Competition
Meta Platforms is facing stiff competition from competitors like Reddit RDDT and Snap SNAP. Both Snap and Reddit are expanding their portfolio in the AI space.
Reddit’s investments in artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools remain noteworthy. In July 2026, Reddit unveiled new AI-powered moderation tools to combat spam, fake engagement and harmful content. The company said that its automated systems now block 23 million spam views daily, identify roughly 25,000 new spam posts and comments each day, and revoke nearly 2 million inauthentic votes daily.
Reddit also reduced user exposure to spam by about 20%. Expanded automated enforcement has cut average response time for hateful or violent content to under five seconds, increased enforcement actions by more than 200%, and reduced exposure to potentially harmful content by more than 40%.
Snap is leveraging AI through products like SPECS, which integrate hands-free AI assistance and advanced AR capabilities, positioning the company as a first mover in next-generation computing. AI-powered creative tools such as Lens+ are also driving new subscription revenue streams and enhancing user engagement.

Meta Platforms, Inc. META agreed to pay approximately $18 billion over 10 years to settle claims brought by a bipartisan group of U.S. attorneys general alleging that Facebook and Instagram were designed to be addictive to children and teens. Meta will also introduce stricter safeguards, including daily usage limits, nighttime restrictions, enhanced age assurance and stronger parental controls.
Meta expects to record approximately $10 billion in legal expenses in the third quarter of 2026, although it said its other financial guidance remains unchanged. About 70% of the settlement, or $12.7 billion, is guaranteed, while the remaining $5.3 billion depends on TikTok and YouTube adopting comparable protections and making matching payments.
Long-Term Regulatory Risk
The agreement could encourage regulators worldwide to pursue similar actions against social media platforms. While Meta’s advertising model remains largely protected, higher compliance costs and restrictions on teen engagement could gradually affect user activity and monetization. Investors should therefore monitor how competitors respond, as broader industry-wide safeguards could reshape social-media economics over the long term.
Financial Impact Manageable
Despite the headline figure, the settlement is unlikely to fundamentally weaken Meta's core advertising business. Reuters reported that the agreement leaves its personalized feeds and ad-targeting model largely intact, helping investors view the resolution as preferable to a prolonged trial and potentially much larger penalties.
Rivals Face Greater Scrutiny
The settlement could have broader implications for Alphabet Inc. GOOGL, TikTok and Snap Inc. SNAP as regulators increasingly target social-media companies over youth safety. Meta is explicitly pressing YouTube and TikTok to adopt similar measures, potentially creating an industry-wide standard. On Aug. 27, META’s stock slipped 0.9%, while SNAP and GOOGL slid 1.7% and 0.4%, respectively. META, GOOGL and SNAP currently carry a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Meta's $18 Billion Settlement Could Reshape Social Media Stocks

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), a social networking and artificial intelligence (AI) giant, closed at $576.14, up 1.07%. The stock moved after Meta settled a high-profile child-safety case with U.S. states. Meta agreed to pay up to $18 billion and introduce child-safety measures such as daily time limits and muted school-time notifications. Meta has also called on competitors to introduce similar protections.
Trading volume reached 31.1 million shares, coming in about 69% above its three-month average of 18.4 million shares. Meta Platforms IPO'd in 2012 and has grown 1,270% since going public.
How the markets moved today
The S&P 500 closed at 7,676, down 0.02%, while the Nasdaq Composite finished at 26,130, down 0.08%. Among social media and digital advertising platforms, Alphabet closed at $339.10, down 1.23%, and Snap closed at $5.42, down 8.45%.
What this means for investors
Meta shares rose slightly following today's settlement because it resolves the legal cases over child addiction with payouts that will be spread over the coming 10 years. Several media reports had compared the case to tech's "big tobacco" moment, sparking fears that it would have to pay a much larger amount.
Even so, as mega tech firms race to develop AI infrastructure, every dollar counts. The bigger question for investors is when and whether Meta's 2026 capital expenditure of $125 billion to $145 billion will generate returns. Meta's ad revenue continues to show impressive growth, and the legal cloud may have lifted, but that massive cash burn is still worth watching.

Stock Market Today, Aug. 26: Meta Gains on $18 Billion Child-Safety Settlement

Snap (NYSE:SNAP), a camera-first social platform with augmented reality and advertising, closed at $5.42, down 8.53%. Pennsylvania's attorney general sued Snap over Snapchat's design and child-safety claims. Investors are watching follow-up legal risk and product disclosures. Trading volume reached 64.4M shares, coming in about 53% above its three-month average of 42.0M shares. Snap IPO'd in 2017 and has fallen 78% since going public.
How the markets moved today
S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) closed at 7,675, down 0.04%, while the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX:^IXIC) finished at 26,130, down 0.08%. Among internet content and information, digital advertising and social media peers, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) closed at $576.14, up 1.07%, while Pinterest (NYSE:PINS) closed at $23.32, down 1.44%, showing mixed sentiment across ad-supported apps.
What this means for investors
Pennsylvania's attorney general sued Snap yesterday, claiming that Snapchat kept "young users compulsively engaged," while lacking necessary safety standards and guardrails for age-appropriate content. This lawsuit was filed less than one day before Meta Platforms agreed to pay a historic $17.1 billion settlement for similar issues with children using its social media platforms.
However, while Meta has been battling this lawsuit for months, Snap's situation is brand new, prompting the market to send its shares down 9% today. A.G. Dave Sunday specifically cited Snap's Snapstreaks (which can be restored with a payment), disappearing messages, infinite scrolling, and "T for teen" rating as some of the many issues in the complaint.
Snap stock remains an unprofitable company -- though it is getting closer to breakeven -- and continues to rely heavily upon stock-based compensation, diluting shareholder value over time. With sales growth slowing over the last three years, yesterday's lawsuit against Snap, and today's ruling against Meta, I'm just not interested in the social media stock today, regardless of its popularity. It may simply be a better app than a company.
