"This potential [for nuclear energy] has more momentum than before," notes one Wall Street analyst. "There are data centers looking for firm and dispatchable and clean generation, and nuclear power can cover that."
Thus far, it has been a roller-coaster ride for NuScale shareholders. At one point in 2025, shares were up roughly 157%. In the back half of 2025, however, the stock gave up all of those gains. And thus far in 2026, shares are down roughly 41%, pushing NuScale's market cap to roughly $3.07 billion.
After years of volatility, now might be the time to pick up shares of this struggling nuclear energy stock. That's because arguably the biggest catalyst in the company's history may soon be on the way.
NuScale Power investors should be excited about this upcoming catalyst
Despite struggles with its stock price, NuScale remains a promising nuclear energy stock. The company is focused on designing and building small modular reactors, or SMRs. These nuclear systems have smaller footprints, faster deployment times, and lower initial costs compared to larger conventional nuclear power plants. In other words, NuScale's SMRs are an ideal solution to meet the AI industry's rapidly rising demands for more clean energy.
NuScale remains the only company in the U.S. with regulatory approval for building SMRs, although many other competitors are quickly advancing their own designs in hopes of government approval.
Regulatory approval likely helped NuScale close a landmark deal with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) late last year. The deal calls for NuScale to build a 6 GW SMR system. If built, it could become the largest SMR system in the world, depending on how quickly other projects advance through permitting and construction.
There's just one problem: TVA hasn't actually committed to buying power from NuScale's power plant. Unless a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) is signed, NuScale won't begin construction. Uncertainty surrounding a potential PPA has likely weighed heavily on NuScale stock. But that uncertainty could be lifted by the end of this year, when NuScale's CFO, Robert Hamady, predicts a PPA will be finalized.
"We're hopeful that TVA can come across the line at some point later this year," NuScale's CFO revealed in May. A PPA would clear the way not only for site construction to begin, but also for additional milestone payments to be accrued. "I hope to be operationally cash flow positive by the end of this year," Hamady predicts, should a PPA be signed before then.
By the end of 2026, NuScale may have secured firm financial commitments from the largest customer in its pipeline. It may also have significant funding uncertainty cleared up. While I don't expect a PPA to be signed until the very end of 2026 at the latest, investors who have been waiting on the sidelines should give NuScale stronger consideration now that the company's market cap has fallen below $3 billion.

1 Reason to Buy NuScale Power Stock This August

It's been a wild ride for NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR) investors, but there could be one catalyst on the horizon that leads to a breakout and an end to the boom-and-bust cycle.
NuScale's project, a 6-gigawatt small modular reactor (SMR) system for the Tennessee Valley Authority, a major utility operator, could imminetly receive a power purchase agreement (PPA). This is according to CEO John Hopkins, who has implied that the company would have a PPA by the end of 2026.

A signed PPA would lock in revenue for NuScale from a utility company for years or even decades to come. This would be welcome news for NuScale, which has suffered several meaningful setbacks this year.
The bad news for NuScale has included the exit of its largest shareholder, Fluor, as well as a $507.4 million milestone payment to commercialization partner ENTRA1 Energy. Delays in project timelines and skyrocketing operating losses amid declining revenue are prompting investors to head for the exit.
A class action lawsuit was also filed against NuScale for allegedly misleading investors on ENTRA1's capabilities and experience.
With all that said, AI-related power demand has been a boon for nuclear energy, and NuScale's SMR design was the first to receive full approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). It still has a real first-mover advantage in a competitive industry.
The risks are not small with NuScale, but the upside potential is substantial. NuScale plummeted 81% over the past 12 months, and now investors can scoop up the stock for a very reasonable price. For long-term investors bullish on this new age of nuclear power, NuScale's stock is trading near its 52-week low, at just under $9 per share as of this writing.
That price, along with the potential for a positive update in next month's earnings release, might make a risk-loving investor jump in.

Bold Prediction: NuScale Power Is About to Break Out

The recent slide in NuScale Power stock could be setting it up for a big, long-term gain.
The company has two projects underway, but neither will likely materialize within the next five years.
NuScale investors should be ready for near-term volatility and stay invested for the next decade.
NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR) has perhaps never before looked like such a strong buy.
Indeed, the advanced nuclear company -- the only one with a small modular reactor (SMR) design certified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission -- has shaved about 85% of its value since last July.
That alone doesn't make it a buy, but when you look at the company's progress, the sell-off could be teeing up NuScale for a strong rebound. Here's what I mean.
The bull case for NuScale requires patience
NuScale Power is trying to become the first publicly traded U.S. SMR company to turn its first-mover advantage into actual commercial sales. That advantage is its NRC-approved SMR design, which has given it a years-long head start in a tough regulatory environment.
True, NuScale hasn't deployed an SMR yet. But the NRC approval has moved it closer to doing so. It is currently working through its commercial partner, ENTRA1, toward what could be the biggest SMR deployment program in U.S. history: a power plant of up to 6 gigawatts (GW) across TVA's seven-state service territory. If these talks turn into a binding agreement, NuScale could end up deploying around 72 Power Modules for this project.
Then there's the Romanian project in Doiceşti. This planned 462 megawatt-electric (MWe) plant is aiming to use six of NuScale's Power Modules, and its first module could be in commercial operation in 2033.
That last date, 2033, brings me to my main point: NuScale is not a stock for the short term. If you look at the company with your eyes on the near future, say, the next five years, you're probably not looking far enough. NuScale is probably not going to deliver life-changing gains over the next half-decade. But if you enlarge your time horizon to 10, maybe 15 years, then you're thinking on the same time scale as the nuclear energy industry operates.
In that longer-time perspective, NuScale, in my opinion, is a stock worth buying now. That's not to say it's dirt cheap: Even after its recent slide, it carries a $3 billion market cap, with about $18.7 million in trailing-12-month revenue. At today's price, it trades at about 160 times trailing sales.
Still, if Wall Street continues to approach advanced nuclear energy bearishly, then that gives you the chance to build a position gradually at a lower price. NuScale still has a lot to prove, true, but for investors who can wait a decade or longer for the opportunities to play out, an investment today could help set you up for life.

Where could that lead NuScale Power shares five years from now?
Small nuclear reactors for AI data centers
By now, many readers are aware of the electricity needs for the upcoming AI data center investments. You may be well aware of them when looking at your current electric bills. This has not only become an economic issue but also a political one, in which government agencies, large and small, are trying to pass rules requiring AI infrastructure providers to pay for exclusive power agreements to avoid overly burdening residential electric bills.
Small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) are theoretically a perfect solution for this problem, and NuScale Power has the only design approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Because of this, the company has partnered with ENTRA1 Energy as its commercial partner to develop power plants for these small nuclear reactors.
After this tie-up, the Tennessee Valley Authority committed to buying 6 gigawatts of power utilizing NuScale's SMR technology, which could mean a boom in future demand. However, as of the summer of 2026, NuScale Power has never built a nuclear reactor, even though its designs were approved years ago.
Where will NuScale stock be five years from now?
While there is a lot of excitement about providing electricity for the AI revolution in the next few years, NuScale Power's development timeline with ENTRA1 Energy is much longer. Its projects with the Tennessee Valley Authority, Poland, and Romania will not generate revenue until 2030, assuming no further delays. This is going to miss the meat of the AI data center build-out, which is why the boom is primarily being supplied by natural gas.
Right now, NuScale Power's free cash flow is highly negative, at $750 million over the last 12 months, while revenue is negligible. If this continues -- as it looks like it will -- the stock will be much lower five years from now.

NuScale Power Is Down 38% This Year: Here's What the Next 5 Years Could Look Like

In May 2025, Donald Trump signed an executive order to speed up the development of nuclear power in the United States.
The goal is to increase U.S. nuclear capacity from 100 gigawatts to 400 gigawatts by 2050.
Nuclear power is carbon-free, so it is technically a clean power source. And it is always on, so it is a reliable base-load power source. With power demand expected to grow 60% over the next 20 years, up from 10% over the last 20 years, nuclear is increasingly seen as a key part of the supply equation. One big story investors don't want to miss is the huge support the nuclear power industry is getting from the U.S. government.
Massive growth plans for nuclear power
The U.S. nuclear power fleet produces around 100 gigawatts of power today. The goal of Donald Trump's May 2025 executive order is to reach 400 gigawatts by 2050. There will be many steps in that process, including on the regulatory and financing fronts. Already, the groundwork has been laid to test new reactor technologies and to provide funding for both nuclear power start-ups and existing nuclear power companies seeking to expand.

There are several ways for an investor to play the sector. For investors that don't want to jump in with both feet, a picks-and-shovels option like Cameco (NYSE: CCJ) or Brookfield Renewable (NYSE: BEP)(NYSE: BEPC) could be a good choice. While neither is directly benefiting from U.S. government support, Cameco produces and sells uranium. Industry growth is inherently positive for the company. Brookfield Renewable shares ownership of Westinghouse with Cameco. Westinghouse is one of the largest service providers to the nuclear power industry. Again, more nuclear power means more business for Westinghouse.
If you want direct exposure, a more supportive regulatory environment will help Constellation Energy (NASDAQ: CEG) reopen shuttered power plants and sustain operations at plants scheduled for shutdown. It already has deals with Walmart (NASDAQ: WMT) and Meta (NASDAQ: META) to support its nuclear power plant operations. Notably, the U.S. government has provided Constellation with a $1 billion loan tied to its nuclear power ambitions.
Then there are emerging new technologies, like the small modular nuclear reactors (SMR) that NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR) is looking to build. It will also benefit from increased regulatory support, as highlighted by the recent approval of a higher-capacity system the company has built. NuScale is already working with a Romanian utility and with the Tennessee Valley Authority on the potential deployment of its first SMRs. NuScale is a money-losing start-up, so only the most aggressive investors should consider it. But it could also have the biggest upside potential if its technology takes hold.
Different ways to play the nuclear renaissance
If you are a conservative dividend investor, high-yield Brookfield Renewable is probably your best option, noting it operates a diversified clean energy business and sports a lofty 4.8% yield. Contract power company Constellation Energy is more growth-oriented, but still has a sizable existing business to support its nuclear ambitions. Some investors may prefer Cameco, which sells a commodity product likely to be in high demand. The most aggressive investors should consider NuScale Power, which has yet to sell its first SMR. But when it does ink its first deal, the stock could quickly see strong investor interest.

Nuclear Energy Is Winning Repeated Government Backing and Investors Should Take Notice

Nuclear energy is experiencing a global renaissance.
These two stocks in particular are primed to benefit.
The nuclear renaissance is upon us. Investors will have ample opportunity to profit from the energy transition. But there's a lot to understand first before diving in. From the 1960s through much of the 1980s, global nuclear energy capacity consistently rose. Then, in the 1990s, nuclear energy generation capacity plateaued. Growth would remain stagnant for decades.
In 1990, nuclear energy contributed roughly 17% to 18% of the world's electricity generation. Today, nuclear meets less than 10% of global electricity demand. There are many reasons for this, but the takeaway for investors was clear: Very little growth was expected from the nuclear energy industry for many decades.

That growth plateau, however, is already a relic of history. "[N]uclear energy has, in many ways, been recently 'rediscovered' amid surging electricity demand," concludes a recent report from Bank of America.
Why is electricity demand surging? One factor is mostly to blame: the rapid rise of energy-intensive AI technologies. In the coming years, $7 trillion is expected to be spent scaling AI data center infrastructure. All of those data centers will need massive amounts of energy to operate, and the current electricity grid simply isn't equipped to meet that increased demand.
In other words, more energy sources will be needed to fuel the AI revolution. And nuclear energy looks like an ideal solution. "Compared with other energy sources, [nuclear] offers reliable baseload power, a smaller carbon footprint, and a higher energy return on investment," observes Bank of America.
All these points are critical. AI data centers need a reliable, consistent power source. Meanwhile, many big tech companies currently scaling their own data center infrastructure have climate pledges, limiting their investment in power generation from fossil fuels. Finally, investment dollars are finite, forcing these companies to pursue energy options with the highest long-term payoff.
In all, Bank of America sees the nuclear renaissance creating a $10 trillion investable opportunity. Where should investors be focusing their research? Two innovative nuclear energy stocks top the list.
1. NuScale Power
Due to its relatively small size, NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR) arguably has more raw upside potential than the next stock on this list. But the company has disadvantages from an investment perspective.
NuScale is focused on designing, building, and deploying small modular reactor systems (SMRs). Only a handful of SMR systems are online globally today. In a nutshell, these miniature nuclear power plants can -- at least on paper -- be built faster and more cheaply than conventionally large nuclear power plants. They also have smaller footprints, with arguably better safety profiles.
So why aren't there more SMR systems in the world today? While cheaper to construct initially, these systems may ultimately be more expensive on a per-megawatt basis. Additionally, government regulations in many parts of the world have yet to catch up with these smaller reactor designs. In fact, NuScale is the only company approved by U.S. regulators to build an SMR system -- at least for now.
NuScale already has several projects in its pipeline, including a 6-GW project in the eastern U.S. But no projects have officially broken ground yet. Most aren't expected to be completed until 2030 at the earliest.
So while NuScale's $3.2 billion market capitalization provides plenty of upside, there's also plenty of financing risk. The investment thesis for NuScale is a bet that the company's project pipeline will advance faster than the required shareholder dilution to keep the company afloat.
2. Oklo
Oklo (NYSE: OKLO) is very similar to NuScale in terms of its focus on SMRs. But instead of marketing its systems to utilities, Oklo is focused on selling directly to big tech and data center businesses. It already has several valuable deals lined up, including a 1.2-MW system ordered by Meta Platforms.
Notably, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is a major investor in Oklo. This lends a ton of social validation to the company's technology and growth vision. With a $7.7 billion market value, Oklo arguably has a better ability to finance itself over the near term than NuScale. But losses are piling up, and an investment in Oklo today hinges on the same factors affecting NuScale, namely: Will the execution of its project pipeline advance faster than the pace of shareholder dilution?
Both Oklo and NuScale are pure-play stocks for betting on the nuclear renaissance. Both, however, should be relegated to aggressive growth investors willing to stomach extra volatility in return for high long-term upside potential.

It's been a tough year for NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR) investors. Since 2026 began, shares of the popular nuclear energy stock have fallen by roughly 45%.
NuScale's market cap is now down to just $3.2 billion. That looks like a bargain compared to the company's growth potential. Bank of America believes nuclear energy will be a $10 trillion opportunity in the coming decades. Small modular reactors, or SMRs -- the exact nuclear technology that NuScale specializes in -- are expected to take a big share of that opportunity.

NuScale's stock price has struggled in 2026 for several reasons. The biggest, perhaps, has been a lack of tangible catalysts. NuScale has several impressive opportunities in its project pipeline, but there hasn't been much traction in converting these deals into revenue-generating assets.
NuScale's biggest project is a 6 GW system intended for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), a major utility serving the eastern U.S. The deal between NuScale and TVA was signed in September 2025. At the time, NuScale's stock price hovered around $40 per share. At least from a headline perspective, there has been little progress on the deal since, sending NuScale's stock price below $10 earlier this month.
But there's good news: A major catalyst for NuScale's TVA project should be arriving soon. This catalyst is so meaningful that it wouldn't be surprising to see NuScale shares double as the catalyst approaches.
Here's the growth catalyst NuScale Power investors should be monitoring closely
Right now, the deal between NuScale and TVA is largely non-binding. The next step would be to sign a power purchase agreement (PPA). This agreement would commit TVA to buy power from NuScale's SMR system at a predetermined price for years, or even decades, to come. In short, it guarantees that NuScale will generate revenue from the nuclear project, allowing it to begin construction.
In May, NuScale's management team noted that it remains very bullish on signing a PPA agreement with TVA by the end of 2026.
"ENTRA1 [NuScale's financing partner, which will be the party that actually signs the PPA with TVA] has updated us the discussions with TVA are advancing well toward a definitive PPA," NuScale's CEO revealed on a call with investors. "We remain highly encouraged by the progress and the strategic alignment between ENTRA1, TVA, and NuScale."
NuScale's CFO was even more specific. "We're hopeful that TVA can come across the line at some point later this year," he added. "We believe that's a strong possibility."
There is no guarantee that a PPA will be signed before the end of 2026. And to be clear, NuScale has failed to meet its own guidance in the past. But it is hard to overstate how valuable a signed PPA would be for the company.
With its stock price tumbling, NuScale's access to capital is growing more limited and costly. If the company's biggest project gets a firm revenue pathway, expect shares to rebound aggressively. A PPA not only improves access to capital, but it would also be a huge vote of confidence in the viability of the reset of NuScale's project pipeline.

I'm Calling It: NuScale Power Stock Will Double as This Catalyst Hits

The Trump Administration on Wednesday announced that the Prometheus project would receive $60 million in federal funding.
Prometheus is a project that will incorporate AI into the nuclear power design process.
Recent IPO X-Energy is a Tier 1 partner in Prometheus, committing $10 million in capital to the project.
SMR start-up Oklo is also a Prometheus partner.
Nuclear fuel producer Standard Nuclear, which just had its IPO last week, is a partner as well.
It was a big day for nuclear power in the U.S. as the Trump Administration unveiled the recipients of 278 research projects being funded through the Department of Energy’s (DoE) Genesis Mission on Wednesday.
The Prometheus project, which leverages artificial intelligence (AI) for nuclear development, was a big winner, receiving a Phase II award of $60 million over three years. It’s one of the biggest investments in decades in cutting-edge nuclear technologies.

The major partners of Project Prometheus include four of the DoE’s 17 National Laboratories: Idaho, Oak Ridge, Argonne, and Sandia. Major research universities, including North Carolina State and Penn State, are also involved.
But perhaps the biggest winners are the nuclear companies chosen to participate in the project, and their investors. Here’s who’s been chosen, and what it means for their shareholders.

The heavyweights
The biggest partners in Prometheus are the two companies leading the initiative with the Idaho National Laboratory, Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), and Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Amazon Web Services (AWS). AI hyperscaler Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is also on board as a partner.
But the nuclear companies taking part include X-Energy (NASDAQ:XE), which has signed on as a Tier 1 partner with board of directors representation, committing $10 million in financial support as well as the use of its Xe-100 high-temperature, gas-cooled small modular reactor (SMR), tri-structural isotopic TRISO-X particle fuel designs, and other design and fabrication data.
X-Energy believes that participation in the Prometheus project will “accelerate licensing, manufacturing, construction, and operation across a growing commercial project portfolio.”
Although it’s not a Tier 1 partner, start-up Oklo (NYSE:OKLO), which is focused on designing and building a sodium-cooled fast reactor SMR called the Aurora Powerhouse, is also a Prometheus partner. The company is working on a strategic partnership project to integrate the Prometheus AI platform into its own Multiphysics design and analysis infrastructure. The integration is expected to streamline engineering workflows and support the development of Pluto, Oklo’s reactor system designed for plutonium fuels.
Start-up nuclear fuel company Standard Nuclear (NYSE:STDN) is also a Prometheus partner, and advertises itself as “the only U.S. company with industrial-scale TRISO manufacturing facilities to date.”
Nonpublic nuclear companies like TerraPower, Westinghouse Electric, and Aalo Atomics are also involved as partners.
It’s worth noting that this Prometheus AI project is unrelated to the “Prometheus AI supercluster,” a computing system that Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) is building in Ohio in partnership with Vistra Corp. (NYSE:VST), Oklo, and TerraPower. That facility, a one-gigawatt data center, is scheduled to come online sometime this year. It’s also unrelated to Jeff Bezos’ AI design and engineering start-up Prometheus.

What it means for investors
Once again, Oklo ends up a winner with the DoE, after having been a participant in numerous prior DoE initiatives, including the Reactor Pilot Program through which it’s constructing its first Aurora Powerhouse at the Idaho National Laboratory.
Oklo’s current approval strategy is to work with the DoE on advancing projects and then apply the lessons learned to future NRC licensing requests. That strategy appears to be paying off, and will hopefully bear fruit when the company is ready to apply to the NRC for a commercial license for its Aurora Powerhouse design.
X-Energy, which just had its IPO in April, probably benefits most from the prestige and exposure it receives as a Tier 1 partner on the project. The company already has a fuel fabrication license from the NRC for its TRISO-X fuel. It also has numerous reactor projects in various stages of development in the U.S. and the United Kingdom that need regulatory approval. While Prometheus participation isn’t a direct step towards those approvals, partnering with the DoE in the meantime certainly can’t hurt.
The much smaller Standard Nuclear is even younger, having just IPOed last week. It has a market capitalization of just $1.4 billion compared to Oklo’s $7.6 billion and X-Energy’s $6.5 billion. It already has approval to receive high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) feedstock and to produce TRISO fuel. Being part of this project allows the small start-up to work with industry heavyweights and deepen its credibility with the DoE and other government bodies.
Meanwhile, SMR start-up NuScale (NYSE:SMR) didn’t make the list… again. This shouldn’t be a surprise to investors, as the company hasn’t received any DoE support since 2019.
In other words, all three companies should benefit to some degree, but with nuclear stocks having fallen out of favor in the past year, it will take more than project participation to turn their fortunes around.

The Trump Administration Launches "Project Prometheus" With These Nuclear Energy Stocks (Hint: NuScale Didn't Make the Cut)

If you've been tracking NuScale Power (NYSE: SMR), you witnessed a red-hot narrative crashing into a wall of reality over the last few months. Shares of the nuclear energy start-up crashed in the last quarter of 2025 and continued their downward slide into 2026, losing 29.2% value in the first half of the year, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence.
President Donald Trump aims to quadruple U.S. nuclear energy capacity to 400 gigawatts by 2050. Because building a traditional nuclear reactor takes years even as power demand has hit unprecedented levels amid the artificial intelligence (AI) data center boom, the government is also supporting small modular reactors (SMRs).

NuScale's SMR design is already approved by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the company has begun manufacturing its first patented 77-megawatt carbon-free modules.
The problem? NuScale hasn't built a reactor yet. As that reality set in, investors ran for the exit. Here is how the fallout unfolded.
Whu NuScale Power stock derailed
In early 2026, TD Cowen analyst Marc Bianchi raised alarm bells, warning that NuScale's flagship project in Romania could be delayed until 2034.
NuScale's fourth-quarter earnings report delivered another blow: a massive $507.4 million milestone payment to ENTRA1 Energy, its exclusive commercialization partner. Under the agreement, NuScale owes ENTRA1 fees for its nuclear product developments without guaranteed revenues.
With the company's operating loss surging nearly fivefold to $690 million during the quarter, analysts slashed their price targets on NuScale stock while some disgruntled investors filed class action lawsuits, alleging misrepresentation of ENTRA1 Energy's capabilities and arrangement.
To make matters worse, NuScale's largest shareholder, Fluor, aggressively offloaded its position and exited NuScale completely by April 2026, pocketing $2.4 billion in proceeds. Watching an anchor insider walk away shattered whatever little remained of retail confidence.
NuScale's first quarter offered no relief. Revenue plummeted from $13.4 million in the prior-year period to a paltry $0.5 million as one-time licensing revenue dried up, while net losses nearly tripled to $44 million.
Is NuScalePower stock a buy before Aug. 5?
NuScale did finish Q1 with $890 million in cash and short-term investments and zero long-term debt. But cash reserves can only buy so much time when losses are mounting, and cash burn rates remain high.
Commercial deployment is still years away, with NuScale projecting first module delivery no earlier than 2031. Moreover, although ENTRA1 has been in the headlines for a big agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to deploy up to 6 GW of nuclear power with NuScale's SMR equipment, the project still lacks a long-term power purchase agreement or a finalized timeline.
NuScale will release its second-quarter numbers on Aug. 5. Expectations are muted. Until the company can transition from regulatory approvals and partnership agreements to a firm revenue-generating model, its stock will remain speculative and volatile.
