Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ:HOOD), the stock and crypto brokerage that pioneered commission-free trading, closed down 13.24% on Wednesday at $71.20. Shares fell after its Q1 2026 results missed revenue and EPS estimates.
Trading volume reached 76.7 million shares, coming in about 132% above its three-month average of 33.0 million shares. Robinhood IPO'd in 2021 and has grown 87% since going public.
How the markets moved today
The S&P 500 finished Wednesday essentially flat at 7,136, down 0.04%, while the Nasdaq Composite inched up 0.04% to close at 24,673. Among capital markets peers, Charles Schwab closed up 0.36% at $91.16, and Interactive Brokers Group fell 0.57% to close at $77.05.
What this means for investors
Robinhood tumbled today on disappointing results. Its Q1 trading revenue increased 7% year over year to $623 million, but growth was slower than Wall Street expected.
Robinhood’s crypto trading revenue fell 47% from the same period last year, which is not surprising given the recent slump in cryptocurrency prices. The firm has invested heavily in crypto trading, and the broader question for investors is whether its new products and diversification can balance the ebbs and flows of the digital asset world.
The company told investors it was focusing on real-world asset tokenization, which is a way to record ownership on the blockchain. It is early days for this sector, and investors will be able to learn more about Robinhood’s plan to take an early lead at a crypto event in July.

Stock Market Today, April 29: Robinhood Markets Drops After Earnings Miss

Robinhood Markets, Inc.’s HOOD shares slid almost 9% during after-hours trading on weaker-than-expected first-quarter 2026 performance. Earnings of 38 cents per share lagged the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 40 cents. The bottom line grew 3% year over year.
Total net revenues rose 15% from a year ago to $1.07 billion. The top line missed the consensus mark of $1.14 billion.
Weakness in crypto due to massive sell-off in the underlying assets hurt trading volume and related revenues. Higher operating expenses posed the undermining factor. Solid trading activity across options and equity amid heightened volatility led to an increase in transaction-based revenues. Further, higher net interest revenues (NIR) and a surge in Gold subscribers were tailwinds.
HOOD’s Revenue Mix Stayed Growth-Positive
HOOD generated transaction-based revenues of $623 million, up 7% year over year. Within that, “other” transaction revenues remained a key contributor at $147 million (soaring 320%), which largely comprised event contracts revenues. Further, options revenues rose 8% to $260 million, and equities revenues jumped 46% to $82 million.
During the quarter, average revenue per user (ARPU) increased 8% year over year to $157.
Net interest revenues climbed 24% year over year to $359 million, reflecting growth in interest-earning assets that more than offset lower short-term interest rates and weaker securities lending activity. Other revenues increased 57% to $85 million, helped by higher Robinhood Gold subscription revenues.
Robinhood’s Trading Activity Showed Mixed Signals
Trading volumes improved meaningfully from a year ago. Equity notional trading volumes increased 54% year over year to $638 billion, while options contracts traded rose 17% to 586 million, pointing to healthy engagement among active traders.
Crypto was a weaker spot. Cryptocurrency transaction revenues plunged 47% year over year to $134 million, despite overall crypto notional trading volume of $66 billion, including $24 billion on the Robinhood app and $42 billion at Bitstamp.
Additionally, event contracts traded were a record 8.8 billion, underscoring continued momentum in newer products.
HOOD’s Expanding Customer Base
During the first quarter, Funded Customers increased 6% year over year to 27.4 million. Investment Accounts rose 8% to 29.1 million, reflecting continued customer acquisition and deeper platform penetration.
As of March 31, 2026, Total Platform Assets increased 39% year over year to $307 billion. This was driven by net deposits of $18 billion, higher equity valuations and acquired assets. In this quarter, the company reported a monthly average user (MAU) of 13.5 million, down 6% year over year.
Retirement assets under custody surged 90% to a record $27.4 billion, while the margin book rose 93% to $17 billion. Cash and deposits increased 71% to $16.7 billion, though cash sweep balances fell 8% to $26 billion following changes to the high-yield cash program.
During the reported quarter, Robinhood Gold subscribers surged 36% year over year to 4.3 million.
Robinhood’s Costs Up on Growth Investments
Total operating expenses increased 18% from the prior-year quarter to $656 million, reflecting marketing and growth investments as well as acquisition-related costs. On an adjusted basis, operating expenses and share-based compensation rose 14% to $607 million, which included $14 million of costs tied to Rothera and Trump Accounts.
HOOD’s profitability remained solid despite the higher expense base. Adjusted EBITDA increased 14% year over year to $534 million, translating to a 50% adjusted EBITDA margin.
Net income increased 3% to $346 million, supported by revenue growth and operating leverage.
HOOD’s Buybacks and 2026 Expense Outlook in Focus
Robinhood continued returning capital to shareholders. In the reported quarter, the company repurchased $250 million of Class A common stock, representing 3.1 million shares at an average price of roughly $81 per share.
In March, the board refreshed the share repurchase authorization to $1.5 billion, expected to be completed over approximately three years with flexibility based on market conditions.
Robinhood raised its 2026 adjusted operating expenses and share-based compensation outlook range to $2.7-$2.825 billion to reflect an additional $100 million investment tied to building and supporting Trump Accounts. The Trump Accounts work is contracted on a cost-plus basis with a small margin, and expects related revenues to exceed costs.
Our View on Robinhood
Robinhood’s solid transaction-based revenues, product expansion efforts and higher interest-earning assets, alongside a solid balance sheet, will aid its financials. Further, the company’s initiatives to expand globally will drive growth. Rising expenses, crypto volatility and excessive regulatory risks are major headwinds.

Performance of HOOD’s Peers
Interactive Brokers Group’s IBKR first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings per share of 60 cents missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 62 cents. However, the bottom line reflected a rise of 27.7% from the prior-year quarter.
IBKR’s results were primarily hurt by a rise in expenses. However, an increase in revenues, growth in customer accounts and a rise in daily average revenue trades (DARTs) acted as tailwinds.
Charles Schwab’s SCHW first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $1.43 per share outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.38. The bottom line soared 38% year over year.
Quarterly results benefited from the robust performance of the asset management business and an increase in trading revenues. Higher net interest revenues (NIR) and solid brokerage account numbers were other positives. However, an increase in expenses was the undermining factor for SCHW.

Beware crypto volatility
Let's be honest here. When it comes to risk and reward, most investors assume that if a particular asset accounts for a certain percentage of a portfolio's value, then it must account for the same percentage of that portfolio's overall risk. But that simply isn't the case, as Charles Schwab makes clear in its report.
There's no better example of that than Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), which has been tremendously volatile over its 16-year history. As a result, even a 1% allocation to crypto could have serious implications for your overall portfolio if the price of Bitcoin suddenly collapses.
Consider that over the past six months, the price of Bitcoin has dropped nearly 45%. And that's nothing compared to how Bitcoin has performed in the past. In 2018, for example, Bitcoin fell off a cliff and lost 74% of its value before finally recovering. Are there any other assets in your portfolio that are that volatile? Probably not.
Is there a "correct" crypto allocation?
That being said, Charles Schwab says that there is no single "correct" crypto allocation. There are a number of factors to consider, including investment horizon and capacity for loss. Investors need to weigh factors that impact both performance and risk tolerance.
Most likely, though, the optimal crypto allocation is somewhere between 1% and 5%. This is the Goldilocks range: not too high, and not too low. If you are a risk-averse investor looking for a little extra upside, then a 1% allocation probably makes the most sense. And if you are a risk-seeking investor, then a 5% allocation makes the most sense. Though avoiding crypto altogether might make sense for some investors.
In December 2024, for example, BlackRock suggested that a 1%-2% allocation to crypto makes sense for most 60/40 investors, i.e., investors who allocate 60% of their portfolio to stocks and 40% to bonds. Just like Charles Schwab, BlackRock found that crypto can start to have some very outsize impacts on a portfolio once you ratchet up your allocation much higher than that. At a 4% allocation, for example, Bitcoin accounted for 14% of overall portfolio risk in December 2024.
If crypto accounts for more than 5% of your total portfolio, then you could be playing with fire. Unlike most stocks, cryptocurrencies can -- and do -- fall to zero. And they can do so with astonishing rapidity.
Crypto trades 24/7 on a global basis, and it's quite possible that you could wake up one day and find a significant percentage of your portfolio's value erased overnight. That's especially true if you're dabbling in meme coins or other highly speculative cryptocurrencies.
As a result, the bulk of your overall portfolio allocation should be high-quality stocks and index funds that you can buy and hold for the long haul. If you choose to sprinkle in a little crypto, you should do so judiciously. Think of yourself as a chef, sprinkling in a tiny soupçon of spice for that little extra kick. Too much, though, and you might overpower the entire meal.
The big takeaway is that crypto is much more volatile than other asset classes, and wild price swings can dominate overall portfolio performance. If you are choosing an allocation to crypto greater than 1%, you need to understand how it impacts your overall risk-reward profile.

Charles Schwab SCHW posted record net revenues of $6.48 billion for the first quarter of 2026. The metric was up 16% year over year, with strength across all major revenue streams. The top line, however, missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $6.52 billion.
This weaker-than-expected revenue performance was the main reason behind 7.6% fall in Schwab shares during yesterday’s trading.
Nonetheless, supported by massive revenues and manageable expenses, SCHW’s adjusted earnings per share soared 38% from the prior-year quarter to $1.43. It surpassed the consensus estimate of $1.39.

Primary Drivers of Schwab’s Q1 Revenue Growth
Solid net new assets: Schwab attracted $139.9 billion in core net new assets during the quarter. Excluding a planned mutual fund clearing client deconversion, assets gathered were $158 billion, marking an annualized growth of 5.4%. The surge was driven by organic client growth and sustained transfers from competitors. This lifted the total client assets to $11.77 trillion.
Trading activity spike: Daily average trading volumes surged 34% from the prior-year quarter to 9.9 million trades, fueling an increase in trading revenues as clients responded to market volatility and opportunity. Schwab opened 1.3 million new brokerage accounts, highlighting persistent client engagement. Driven by these factors, the company’s trading revenues rose 20% to $1.1 billion. This marks the fourth straight quarter in which trading revenues exceeded $1 billion.
Higher net interest revenues (NIR): A favorable interest rate environment continued to benefit Schwab, with net interest margin rising 35 basis points year over year to 2.88%. Client sweep cash balances grew $7.8 billion to $461.5 billion, supporting both profitability and funding costs. At the end of the first quarter, Schwab’s average interest-earning assets were up 2% at $437.7 billion. Hence, NIR (SCHW’s biggest revenue source) increased 16% year over year to $3.14 billion.
Asset management fee growth: Revenues from asset management and administration rose 15% to $1.76 billion, supported by record adoption of wealth solutions and organic expansion. This was partly offset by weak equity market performance. At the end of March client assets receiving ongoing advisory services totaled $6.04 billion, up 19.4% year over year.
Other Factors That Influenced Schwab’s Q1 Earnings
Total non-interest expenses (GAAP basis) increased 5% to $3.29 billion. Excluding non-recurring items, adjusted total expenses were $3.15 billion, up 5% year over year.
As of March 31, 2026, the company had 39.1 million active brokerage accounts, 2.3 million banking accounts and 5.8 million corporate retirement plan participants.

PepsiCo Inc. (PEP) shares rose 2.3% after the company reported first-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $1.61 per share, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.55 per share.
