Ross Stores (ROST) Dips More Than Broader Market: What You Should Know

Costco Wholesale Corporation COST reported fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 adjusted earnings of $6.60 per share, which beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $6.48 and increased 12.4% year over year. Reported earnings came in at $6.75 per share, including a 15-cent nonrecurring benefit related to tariff refunds.
Total revenues rose 11.1% year over year to $95,723 million, surpassing the consensus estimate of $94,820 million. Comparable sales increased 9.4%, while digitally enabled comparable sales advanced 19.5%.

COST Posts Solid Comparable Sales Growth
Net sales improved 11.2% year over year to $93,873 million. Comparable sales growth was supported by a 3.3% increase in worldwide traffic and a 5.9% rise in average ticket.
Excluding gasoline price and foreign exchange impacts, comparable sales increased 6.7%, with both adjusted ticket and traffic growth of 3.3%. Gas price inflation contributed about three percentage points to reported sales growth, while foreign exchange had a roughly 0.3% negative impact.
Costco Sees Broad Regional Sales Gains
Comparable sales in the United States increased 10.7%, while Canada and Other International markets registered gains of 5% and 7%, respectively. On an adjusted basis, comparable sales grew 7.2% in the United States, 4.6% in Canada and 6.2% in Other International markets.
Nonfoods delivered mid-to-high-single-digit comparable sales growth, led by gold and jewelry, home furnishings, housewares, small electrics, and health and beauty. Fresh foods recorded mid-single-digit comparable sales growth, driven by bakery and meat, while food and sundries posted low-to-mid-single-digit gains.
COST’s Membership Trends Remain Healthy
Membership fee income increased 7.3% year over year to $1,849 million and rose 7.7%, excluding foreign exchange effects. Excluding foreign exchange and the September 2024 membership fee increase, membership income advanced 6.8%, driven by higher executive membership penetration and membership growth.
Costco ended the quarter with 84.1 million paid members, up 3.8%, and 150.4 million cardholders, up 3.6%. Paid executive memberships increased 9.4% to 42.3 million. U.S. and Canada renewal rates improved 10 basis points sequentially to 92.3%, while the worldwide rate reached 89.8%.
Costco's Digital Business Maintains Momentum
Digitally enabled comparable sales increased 19.5%, or 19.8% excluding foreign exchange impacts. Site and app traffic climbed 30%, with pharmacy, home furnishings, small electrics, hardware, housewares, domestics, and health and beauty among the strongest digital categories.
Costco expanded third-party same-day delivery through Uber Eats and DoorDash in the United States alongside its Instacart partnership. Management said digitally enabled sales exceeded $33 billion in fiscal 2026 and grew more than 20%.
COST's Margins Reflect Gas and Tariff Effects
Gross margin contracted 11 basis points year over year to 11%. Excluding gasoline inflation, however, gross margin improved 20 basis points. Core-on-core margins on their own sales increased 18 basis points after excluding tariff refund effects, helped by supply-chain efficiencies and improved fresh-food labor productivity.
The SG&A rate improved 27 basis points to 8.9%, though the improvement narrowed to two basis points, excluding gasoline inflation. Operating income increased 13.8% year over year to $3,801 million.
Costco Expands Warehouses and Investment
Costco ended fiscal 2026 with 939 warehouses after opening 25 net new locations during the year. Management plans 33 openings in fiscal 2027, including five relocations, for a net 28 new warehouses.
Cash and cash equivalents stood at $20,207 million at fiscal year-end, up from $14,161 million a year earlier. Fiscal 2026 operating cash flow increased to $15,825 million from $13,335 million, while additions to property and equipment totaled $6,435 million. Costco plans approximately $7.5 billion in capital expenditures for fiscal 2027, primarily supporting warehouse growth and supply-chain investments.

Burlington Stores, Inc. BURL is sharpening its off-price approach through disciplined buying and a responsive assortment. Its merchants seek branded products at attractive prices, then adapt the mix to local tastes and emerging trends. Beauty and accessories have been bright spots, fitting Burlington’s effort to offer shoppers compelling value.
That strength came alongside solid fiscal second-quarter 2026 results. Total sales increased 11% year over year to nearly $3 billion and comparable-store sales rose 2%. Management said category trends were strongest in beauty and accessories. The comparable-sales gain was driven mainly by a higher average basket, while transactions were relatively flat year over year.
Burlington 2.0 provides the framework behind its merchandising push. The initiative emphasizes better buying and planning, faster merchandise flow and assortments tailored to local markets. Excluding the benefit of tariff refunds, merchandise margin increased 70 basis points, reflecting progress in how the retailer buys and sells its products.
Store expansion gives Burlington a wider platform for that assortment. It added 45 net stores in the quarter, bringing the increase over the past 12 months to 149. Management said Home began outperforming the chain in July as the business moved past last year’s tariff-related assortment gaps.
The next test is whether category momentum brings more shoppers into stores. Burlington expects comparable-store sales to grow 3-4% in fiscal 2026 and plans approximately 115 net new stores. It intends to reinvest $55 million in tariff refunds to offer sharper values in the second half. With baskets growing but transactions flat, customer traffic remains the measure to watch. Stronger values could help turn interest in beauty and accessories into repeat visits.

Burlington's Beauty & Accessories Categories Lead Sales Trends

Dollar Tree, Inc. DLTR shares have fallen 17.9% over the past four weeks and 8.4% over the past three months. Yet the stock remains up 18.9% over the past year, leaving its longer rebound intact but under pressure.
The tension is between improving sales and traffic on one side and margin durability on the other. Tariff-refund benefits lifted the latest quarter, while reinvestment, fuel, inflation and merchandise mix could weigh more heavily on profitability ahead.
Dollar Tree's second-quarter fiscal 2026 net sales rose 7% to $4.89 billion, while comparable-store sales advanced 3.7%. Average ticket increased 3.3% and traffic improved 0.4%, turning positive sequentially. Consumables delivered a 5.8% comp and discretionary sales rose 1.6% despite helium-related in-stock constraints that reduced sales by about $15 million.
The multi-price rollout is also broadening the assortment. Dollar Tree ended the quarter with about 6,600 multi-price stores after converting or adding roughly 710 locations during the period. Multi-price merchandise represented 17% of sales, up about 400 basis points year over year. Store execution is improving as well, with locations classified internally as opportunities for improvement falling to about one-third of the fleet from roughly half at the October 2025 Investor Day.
Dollar Tree, Inc. Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise
Margin quality remains the central concern. Gross margin expanded 850 basis points to 42.9% in the second quarter, but about 680 basis points of that increase came from the net impact of tariff refunds. The company received $383 million of refunds and plans to reinvest about $210 million in pricing, marketing, store operations and store conditions. Third-quarter adjusted earnings guidance of 80-95 cents per share includes an estimated 50-cent negative impact from tariff-refund reinvestments.
Costs outside the refund cycle also deserve attention. First-half selling, general and administrative expenses were 28.5% of revenues compared with 28.4% a year earlier, reflecting higher marketing investments, general liability costs and depreciation from store investments. Higher inflation, elevated fuel costs and a sales mix tilted toward lower-margin consumables can further limit gross-margin upside.
The earnings outlook nevertheless moved higher. Dollar Tree raised fiscal 2026 adjusted earnings guidance to $7.70-$8.05 per share, including an estimated 60-cent benefit from the net impact of tariff refunds, while maintaining net sales guidance of $20.5-$20.7 billion and comparable-sales growth of 3-4%. The company also generated $675 million of free cash flow in the second quarter, supporting continued investment and share repurchases.
Investors assessing the value-retail landscape can also watch Dollar General Corporation DG, another small-box retailer centered on affordable everyday essentials. Its broad mix of food, health, cleaning and household products makes it a relevant comparison to Dollar Tree's growing consumables business.
Ross Stores, Inc. ROST offers a different value-retail reference point through its off-price apparel and home-fashion model. Its merchandise mix provides a more discretionary comparison as investors gauge how value-seeking demand is developing across retail.
DLTR's recent decline leaves the rebound dependent on execution rather than one-time margin help. The stock trades at 14.1X forward 12-month earnings, below its five-year median of 17.7X, but the path to sustained margin improvement still depends on controlling reinvestment, freight and inflation while preserving traffic gains.

DLTR Falls 17.9% in the Past Month as Margin Risks Test Its Rebound

The TJX Companies, Inc. TJX is extending its customer reach through digital and social media. The company looks to keep its retail banners visible to shoppers and support repeat store visits. In the second quarter of fiscal 2027earnings call TJX said that for the fall and holiday seasons, it plans to use a mix of marketing channels, with a strong emphasis on digital and social media. Its campaigns are designed to reinforce the company’s value positioning through entertaining content that connects with shoppers across a broad range of age and income groups.
The scale of that digital activity is already substantial. In the first half of fiscal 2027, TJX recorded 1.1 billion video views across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest and YouTube. HomeGoods contributed more than 300 million additional views, bringing the referenced total to roughly 1.4 billion. TJX also reported that video completion rates on TikTok and YouTube were significantly above industry benchmarks, with viewers staying through most of the videos.
The digital push also supports TJX’s online assortment, with new brands added to U.S. e-commerce sites for TJ Maxx, Marshalls and Sierra to bring greater freshness to online shoppers. Beyond expanding its online presence, TJX’s integrated marketing efforts are designed to attract new customers and maintain engagement with existing shoppers. Its frequently changing merchandise mix and gifting initiatives are also intended to encourage more frequent store visits during the fall and holiday shopping seasons.
How TJX Compares With ROST and BURL
Ross Stores ROST is seeing marketing efforts support customer traffic and engagement. In the second quarter of fiscal 2026, Ross Stores’ comparable sales rose 10%, primarily driven by customer traffic, with gains from new and lapsed shoppers and more frequent trips by existing customers. The retailer also reported strong engagement with new creative messaging and a tweaked media mix. Ross Stores indicated its marketing efforts are reaching younger customers.

Strong Price Upside Potential
The short-term average price target of brokerage firms represents an increase of 19.1% from the last closing price of $231.15. The brokerage target price is currently in the range of $234-$310. This indicates a maximum upside of 34.1% and no downside.
Dollar Tree Inc.
Dollar Tree is strengthening its competitive position by executing a focused transformation centered on value, convenience and an expanded multi-price assortment that is driving broader customer appeal and deeper everyday relevance.

DLTR has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of 6.7% and 34.6%, respectively, for the current year (ending January 2027). The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the current year’s earnings has improved 10.6% in the last 30 days.
Strong Price Upside Potential
The short-term average price target of brokerage firms represents an increase of 21.6% from the last closing price of $112.33. The brokerage target price is currently in the range of $98-$170. This indicates a maximum upside of 51.3% and a downside of 12.8%.
Dollar General Corp.
Dollar General is benefiting from disciplined execution, improving store standards and a sharper value proposition, supporting sustained traffic and market-share gains across income cohorts. DG’s extensive rural footprint, remodel program and expanding delivery capabilities reinforce convenience, while digital engagement and DG Media Network monetization provide additional growth and margin opportunities.

DG raised its fiscal 2026 outlook for net sales growth of 4-4.3%, same-store sales growth of 2.5-2.9% and EPS of $7.80-$8.00, reflecting confidence in continued momentum. Ongoing store investments and productivity initiatives should support DG’s earnings growth and shareholder returns.
DG has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of 4.1% and 12.9%, respectively, for the current year (ending January 2027). The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the current year’s earnings has improved 0.4% in the last seven days.
Strong Price Upside Potential
