It'll be a busy couple of weeks for investors in Rivian (NASDAQ: RIVN) and Lucid (NASDAQ: LCID), as both companies are due to report second-quarter earnings.
Both have released preliminary delivery results, giving investors a peek at what to expect. Let's have a look at these electric-vehicle pure plays and see which is the better long-term buy.

Rivian on a roll?
Rivian reported it delivered 12,194 vehicles in the second quarter, a substantial increase from 10,661 a year ago. It also produced another 12,613 cars at its Illinois plant. Management raised its full-year delivery guidance to 65,000-70,000 EVs.
Investments and partnerships from Volkswagen and Uber also help Rivian's bottom line and future revenue prospects. Successful testing led to a $1 billion investment from Volkswagen last quarter. The Uber partnership should yield up to 50,000 fully autonomous robotaxis. Furthermore, Rivian's software and services division is already profitable and is narrowing the automotive division's losses.
Still, the stock is down more than 16% year to date and has lost more than 80% of its all-time value. Rivian is trading at about 3.6 times its sales.
Lucid is shaking things up
Lucid isn't as large a company as Rivian, but it's still gaining traction and increasing its deliveries and production. The company delivered 3,953 vehicles, a 20% year-over-year increase, while producing 4,774 more vehicles in Q2.
Lucid has had a few hiccups lately, including a seat supplier issue that delayed deliveries and a sweeping change in executive leadership. The company now has a new CEO, CTO, CFO, and chief customer officer. The new CEO, Silvio Napoli, is aiming to simplify the business and organization.
Lucid's stock has been badly beaten down. Shares have declined more than 90% in the past five years.
Which is the better buy now?
Both Rivian and Lucid remain unprofitable, but right now, Rivian is the stronger company and a buy for long-term investors. Lucid's stock is inexpensive, but Rivian is showing it can execute at scale and has a clear roadmap.
The successful launch of the R2 fleet that moves the company into a more mainstream market, along with an expanding manufacturing capacity, a robotaxi partnership with Uber, and even a connectivity deal with AT&T, are all levers for growth.
Lucid simply has more headwinds than Rivian at this point. The company is facing a class action lawsuit in addition to its operational challenges. This adds considerable pressure on the company and poses a significant reputational risk.
Rivian has more cash, giving it a longer runway. Lucid absolutely has upside potential, but it's more speculative and has greater execution risk. Rivian's diversified offerings, including consumer EVs, commercial contracts, and technology licensing, give it a competitive advantage.

Rivian Reports Earnings on July 30, Followed by Lucid on Aug. 4. Here's the Better Buy Now.

In the new frontier of robotaxis, Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER) decided that its best strategy is not to build them. Instead, it will rely on other companies, like Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ: RIVN), to produce its fleet. In the long run, this can benefit Uber, as it already has the software and branding to easily integrate robotaxis into its transportation ecosystem.
But this can also benefit Rivian, making it a potentially sneaky robotaxi winner. Here's why.

Details of the deal
In March, Uber announced it would invest up to $1.2 billion in Rivian through 2031, contingent on Rivian meeting certain milestones. Uber or its fleet partners will also purchase 10,000 of Rivian's R2 robotaxis, with the right to purchase up to 40,000 more by 2030, bringing potential total purchases to 50,000 vehicles. The plan is to roll out the R2 vehicles in Miami and San Francisco in 2028 and eventually be in 25 cities by 2031.
Beyond the Uber agreement
There's a lot for Rivian to like about Uber's deal, as it could serve as a high-stakes test of its autonomous vehicle technology in a market that will only become more valuable. By 2035, the global robotaxi market is expected to reach $415 billion, according to research from Goldman Sachs Group.
If the deal with Uber is successful, it would lend credibility to Rivian's abilities to produce robotaxis, helping to expand its revenue-generating potential. Areas of opportunity would be wide open, including everything from rental cars to delivery vehicles.
Speaking of delivery vehicles, as a fun fact, Amazon, which owns over 158 million shares of Rivian as of March 31, ordered 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian in 2019. This is just hypothetical, but in the not-too-distant future, it's not difficult to imagine a scenario in which Amazon could order autonomous delivery vans from a company like Rivian and have robots ride in them to deliver packages.
The challenges ahead
As much as there is to like about Rivian's upside potential, there are also risks. Rivian is not a profitable company, reporting net losses of $3.6 billion in 2025 and $4.7 billion in 2024. Relatively speaking, it simply doesn't produce many vehicles and needs to increase its scalability to eventually reach profitability. As an example, Rivian expects to deliver up to 70,000 vehicles for all of 2026, while competitor Tesla delivered over 480,000 vehicles in just the second quarter of 2026.
The good news for anyone considering an investment in Rivian is that scaling is underway, with a plant under construction in Georgia that's expected to start producing vehicles in 2028.
With all that in mind, an investment in Rivian is about what it could do in the future, including executing its plan to build a robotaxi fleet for Uber. That can unlock more opportunities, but it requires precise execution from the management team with little room for error.
For those with a higher risk appetite, Rivian could be a small, speculative position in a portfolio. For a less risky investment in the robotaxi space, I would consider Uber, as it's profitableand comes with a fuller transportation ecosystem that is shaping up to include everything from robotaxis to air taxis.

Uber Agrees to Invest up to $1.2 Billion in Rivian and Purchase up to 50,000 R2s. Here's Why Rivian May Be a Sneaky Robotaxi Winner.

That's the bad news for EV companies. The good news is that the recent declines are narrowing.
And the No. 1 EV in this country is proving to be comparatively resilient.
The most popular automobiles on the lot these days aren’t electric vehicles (EVs). Rather, it’s hybrid EV/internal combustion engine (ICE) models that American consumers lately most want to own and drive.
According to research from Kelley Blue Book and its parent company, Cox Automotive, car buyers really put the pedal to the metal with hybrids in the first half of the year. Let’s dive in and get a fix on what this means for the auto industry in general.

The happy medium
In the first six months of 2026, unit sales in the hybrid segment grew by 9% year over year. This is notable given that consumers in this country weren’t particularly eager to buy vehicles; the overall automotive market slumped by more than 2%.
This was reflected in yet another period of decline for EVs, with unit sales in the segment dropping by almost 24%. Pure ICE models also fell, but only by slightly over 3%.
It seems consumers want the fueling convenience of an ICE and the efficiency of an EV in a single vehicle.
Other factors are at work here. This decade, one trend that’s been apparent in Big Auto is the switch to hybrid-only versions of classic auto models. Toyota (NYSE:TM) is a pioneer and still a leader in this. It now sells hybrid-exclusive editions of the storied Camry sedan, the RAV4 crossover SUV, and the Sienna minivan. Stellantis (NYSE:STLA), to name another manufacturer, also went the exclusively hybrid route with one of its classic models, the Jeep Cherokee crossover SUV.
Short-circuited
While this may sound like dire news for EV makers, there’s one key reason for optimism — if we look at quarter-by-quarter sales performance, the situation is actually improving.
In this year’s second quarter, EV unit sales fell by under 21% year over year. Okay, that’s not smile-inducing, but it’s well better than the 27% of the first quarter, and the queasy 36% drop in the final quarter of 2025. Sales actually rose, and briskly, in the third quarter of last year, but much of this was due to the federal government’s cancellation of the $7,500 clean vehicle tax credit for buyers of pure EVs, which took effect late in that year.
Not all EV makers and models are created equal, of course, and some negotiated the curves better than others. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), the reigning king of the segment, might not have had a stellar second quarter, but its top seller (and the most popular EV in America), the Model Y crossover SUV, did relatively well. The company sold 84,863 units, for a relatively light 1.5% drop from the same period of 2025.
The bad news, Tesla investors, is that we can’t say the same for the company’s No. 2, the Model 3. Unit sales of 34,944 for the sedan in the period represented a more than 28% decline.
Niche players did better. Both the high-end EV specialist Lucid (NASDAQ:LCID) and SUV/pickup maker Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN) actually saw sales gains in both the quarter and the half-year period. Lucid’s sales notched a 2% increase to 5,103 vehicles in the six-month stretch, while Rivian’s clocked in at almost 14%, to 19,152. By comparison, Tesla’s full lineup posted a nearly 11% decline in the first half.
It was the global incumbents that did the worst, but this is no surprise. Earlier this decade, several pledged to stick to EV development timelines for their lineups. They moved away from this strategy once it was apparent that consumer enthusiasm for such models was waning.
Reflecting that, several incumbents saw deep, double-digit declines in EV unit sales in the first half. Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F), to name but one, experienced a 57% slide to 16,606 EVs.
Niche market
So, for EVs, it seems the niche manufacturers are having the most success. Much of this stems from those strategic shifts by the incumbents, who, in adjusting their strategies, have eased competition for the pure-plays. This especially positions a specialist like Rivian or Lucid for continued growth.
That is, if EVs in general are going to bounce back. Assuming some kind of lasting settlement is reached in the Iran war, oil prices are sure to ease, leading to the same for prices at the gas pump. The great selling point for EVs, then, will be drained of much of its power.
So anyone bullish on a potential EV rebound would probably do best parking capital in a specialized maker. Personally, I feel Tesla isn’t setting effective priorities lately, so I’d give that stock a miss.
I think the hybrid upswing will continue, as the trend seems to be a friend of these best-of-both-worlds models. For anyone wanting to invest in this, the company most enthusiastically embracing hybrids is the well-run and consistently profitable Toyota.

Automotive Sales Driven By Growth in Hybrids In The Second Quarter of 2026

One small competitor is quickly catching up to the king of EVs.
Over the past year, I've consistently argued that Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) should now be viewed as an artificial intelligence stock, rather than a traditional electric vehicle stock. The reasons for this are simple.
First, Tesla has struggled with auto sales in recent years, yet its market cap continued to soar. This alone should tell you that the market no longer views the business strictly as an automaker. Second, analysts increasingly believe that future sales growth will be spurred by technologies such as self-driving cars and robotaxi services -- two markets enabled by rapid advances in AI. AI is so key to Tesla's future that earlier this year, the company invested $2 billion in xAI, Elon Musk's AI start-up that is now owned by Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX).

SpaceX, of course, is also one of the biggest AI stocks on the planet, even though many laypeople think of the company as a rocket stock or a satellite internet company. At its core, however, SpaceX's growth opportunities are fueled by its investments in AI. The same is true for Tesla.
If you needed even more proof that Tesla is being valued as an AI stock, not an EV stock, all you need to do is review the company's recent quarterly earnings announcement. Tesla sold 480,126 vehicles globally last quarter. That's a 25% increase over the prior year, meaningfully exceeding Wall Street estimates of roughly 400,000 vehicles. And yet shares fell 14% on the announcement. Why? Because the company reported lackluster results for its AI-backed initiatives, including robotics and robotaxis.
While Tesla's valuation dipped below $1 trillion following quarterly earnings, investors are still likely attributing hundreds of billions of dollars to the company's AI efforts. And yet there's another EV maker attempting to pivot toward AI, and it still has a market cap of just $23 billion. If you're looking for the next Tesla, this could be it.
This Tesla competitor could be the next big AI stock
Earlier this year, I named Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ: RIVN) my top growth stock for 2026. There were two primary reasons for this.
First, Rivian began deliveries of its third EV model -- the R2 SUV -- in June. This is Rivian's first model priced under $50,000. The company also has plans to release two additional affordable models -- the R3 and R3X -- both of which should also cost less than $50,000.
Given that the vast majority of U.S. car buyers want to spend less than $50,000 on their next vehicle purchase, having more affordable models in its lineup allows Rivian to tap the mass market like never before, similar to what the Model 3 and Model Y did for Tesla. For context, those two models currently account for well over 90% of Tesla's auto sales, underscoring the importance of EV options priced below the $50,000 threshold.
I expect Rivian's R2 SUV to help significantly scale sales, making the company more of a household name and bringing it closer to full profitability. All of this leads to my second reason for liking Rivian stock right now: its AI ambitions.
Rivian recently dropped its 2027 profit guidance due to accelerated investments in AI. While Tesla can physically manufacture the cars necessary for its robotaxi fleet, many other robotaxi divisions don't have the same advantage. That means these robotaxi operators need to source vehicles from other EV companies. With a new affordable model in its lineup, Rivian has positioned itself well. A $1.25 billion order for up to 50,000 R2 SUVs from Uber Technologies earlier this year added significant social validation to Rivian's approach.
Rivian's AI investments -- investments that will help its vehicles reach full self-driving capabilities -- will take time to pay off. But over the next few years, the company should have several affordable models in its lineup, plus a technology stack that robotaxi operators will covet. With a market cap of just $22 billion, Tesla investors should strongly consider Rivian as a higher-risk/higher-upside investment.

Move Over Tesla, This EV Stock Will Be the Hottest Trade Over the Next 3 Years

As we look toward the future of transport, investors are weighing the potential of Archer Aviation (NYSE:ACHR) against the established electric vehicle production of Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN).
Archer is focused on the emerging electric aviation market through urban air taxi services, whereas Rivian is a manufacturer of electric consumer and commercial trucks. Both companies are navigating the capital-intensive transition from development to high-volume commercial scaling.
The case for Archer Aviation
Archer builds electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft for urban air mobility and plans to operate its own air-taxi networks. It is a high-profile player among industrial stocks moving toward electrification. Partners like United Airlines Holdings (NASDAQ:UAL) have placed conditional orders, though such customer concentration adds a layer of risk to the business.
For fiscal year 2025, Archer Aviation reported revenue of just $300,000. This early-stage revenue was accompanied by a net loss of approximately $618.2 million. This reflects a company still in its pre-commercial phase as it pursues aircraft type and production certification.
As of its December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio was roughly 0.1x. This ratio measures total debt, including short- and long-term obligations, against shareholders' equity, with a lower number indicating less reliance on borrowed money. Free cash flow was negative at $511.7 million, representing the cash remaining after operating and capital spending are covered.
The case for Rivian Automotive
Rivian Automotive designs and manufactures electric vehicles for both retail consumers and commercial clients like Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN). Its technical operations are anchored by a joint venture with Volkswagen Group, which serves as a primary partner for software and electrical architecture. This direct-to-consumer model allows the company to manage its brand and service experience without a traditional dealership network.
In FY 2025, revenue reached roughly $5.4 billion, representing growth of approximately 9% compared to the prior year. The company reported a net loss of more than $3.6 billion for the fiscal year. This resulted in a net margin of negative 67%, reflecting the high costs of manufacturing and scaling its vehicle platforms.
As of the December 2025 balance sheet, the debt-to-equity ratio is approximately 1.5x, comparing total debt to the value of shareholder equity. Free cash flow for FY 2025 was negative by close to $1.65 billion, reflecting cash from operations minus capital expenditures.
Risk profile comparison
Archer faces significant hurdles related to FAA and GCAA certification processes, where delays could postpone commercialization for its flagship hubs. The company also requires ongoing capital investment and faces uncertainty in future fundraising, while navigating intellectual property litigation with Joby Aviation (NYSE:JOBY). Finally, its reliance on Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) for volume manufacturing introduces operational risks if production fails to scale as expected.
Rivian continues to experience high cash burn and depends on external financing to fund its expansion plans. The joint venture with Volkswagen Group is essential for software development, but recent legal issues involving partner engineers create governance uncertainty. High dependency on Amazon for commercial orders and intense price competition in the electric vehicle market also pressure its ability to reach profitability.

Which stock would I buy in 2026?
Looking at Archer Aviation, the federal government created a framework in 2025 for real-world testing of eVTOL aircraft, a concrete step toward making Archer's vision a reality. Other countries, including Japan, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia, are developing similar regulatory frameworks. A lot still has to happen for Archer’s aircraft to get into the skies, but the notion that the nation's airspace is being regulated in a way that is holding back growth is one that has found favor among U.S. leadership.
Archer is taking steps to refurbish a small Los Angeles airport, Hawthorne, for use as its testing grounds and is working to scale up its manufacturing capabilities to eventually reach capacity for 50 planes a year. Executives at the business have an initial plan to focus on military and cargo uses for its plane, which would be an easier path to early revenue. Future estimates are speculative, but Wall Street analysts see Archer turning its first profit in 2030, with $2.3 billion in revenue, but a lot has to go right between now and then.
The major card Archer is holding is the purchase agreement with United Airlines to serve as taxis, extending the airline’s services. The contract isn’t guaranteed to be executed in full, however.
Rivian has been affected by the slowdown in U.S. EV sales over the last couple of years, as people increasingly prefer hybrid vehicles. Trucks and SUVs have become increasingly popular with U.S. consumers over the past decade, but competition in the electric truck/SUV space is increasing. Still, the R1 is the best-selling SUV over $70,000 in the state of California — EV or combustion engine — and is the best-selling EV SUV nationally priced over $70,000.
Across the R1, R2, and commercial vehicles it produces, Rivian expects to deliver about 65,000 cars in 2026, producing revenue of $7.3 billion, a rise of 35%. The net loss should narrow slightly to $3.5 billion, though negative free cash flow is expected to balloon.
Still, Rivian has more cash than most EV startups, and its partnerships with Volkswagen and Amazon provide some stability. Archer, meanwhile, still has to get through proof-of-concept and manufacturing, something Rivian has tackled. For 2026, go with Rivian.

Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ: RIVN) will next report earnings post-market on Thursday, July 30. Shares in the electric vehicle (EV) company have traded sideways in recent months. Will this upcoming event drive the next big move for shares?
I wouldn't bet on it. After all, Rivian already reported delivery numbers earlier this month for the preceding quarter. Barring major changes to guidance or the company's efforts to scale up production of its lower-priced R2 line of vehicles, it's questionable whether earnings represent a turning point for this electric car stock.

That said, for long-term growth stocks like this one, it's best to stay focused on the big picture, rather than near-term volatility.
Rivian Automotive Q2 2026 earnings preview
Again, investors aren't completely in the dark about how Rivian performed during the quarter ending June 30, 2026. On July 2, the EV maker released its Q2 2026 production and delivery figures. In Q2, Rivian produced 12,613 vehicles and delivered 12,194 vehicles.
These figures exceeded its prior delivery outlook of 9,000 to 11,000 vehicles, largely thanks to the successful launch of the aforementioned R2 vehicle line. Alongside strong delivery figures, management also raised its full-year delivery guidance from 62,000 to 67,000 vehicles to 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles.
While this may give credence to analyst forecasts calling for a 20% jump in sales during Q2 -- from $1.3 billion to around $1.56 billion -- it's unclear what increased deliveries mean for the bottom line. Per the same analyst forecasts, Rivian is expected to report GAAP losses of $0.78 per share for Q2 2026.
However, as GAAP losses came in far narrower than expected in Q1 2026, with reported losses of $0.30 per share versus a consensus of $0.72 per share, I wouldn't rule out the potential for positive surprises. The same could play out, with any updates to Rivian's full-year financial outlook.
The best move with this EV stock
Even if Rivian reports something surprising, such as far lower-than-expected losses or materially improved full-year guidance, it may not have the bullish impact on shares you might expect. For one, uncertainty about this stock goes beyond whether it can continue to scale up into a profitable automaker.
Whether improved results spark a rebound is another question entirely. As Rivian relies on the dilutive sale of newly issued shares to fund expansion, an increased share count could water down the positive impact of reaching profitability. Investors are still digesting Rivian's recent $1.5 billion capital raise.
Further tapping into this dilutive funding source puts pressure on both areas in the near term while limiting long-term upside. As this key risk persists, existing investors should hold on but wait for further developments regarding growth funding before increasing their positions. Those who have yet to buy Rivian shares may also want to wait until management answers these questions, rather than chasing this automotive stock after a post-earnings rally or pullback.

Should You Buy Rivian Stock Before July 30?

Even with shares of Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) down over 30% this year, I'm still not ready to buy the stumbling stock. It's been a brutal 2026 for Tesla's investors, but the stock is still trading at an incredible premium, with its trailing P/E ratio sitting around 290. Simply put, the company's valuation of more than $1 trillion leaves little to no room for error.
Tesla reported its second-quarter earnings last week, and while revenue and deliveries reached record levels, the electric vehicle company's operating income was slashed by 57% year over year, causing the operating margin to collapse to 1.4%.

Non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings per share missed analysts' consensus badly, coming in at just $0.33 per share compared to the expected $0.53. Tesla's free cash flow also turned negative as spending on AI, robotics, and autonomous initiatives increased substantially.
Understandably, Tesla is investing heavily in itself, but the problem is these decreases in operating income and margins aren't happening to a stock that's priced reasonably. Tesla's side projects, including robotaxis, full self-driving, and Optimus, aren't close to generating profits, either.
Tesla has big ambitions, and I'm confident the company will reach most of its stated goals, but it feels like most of these future revenue streams are already baked into Tesla's current stock price. There isn't enough upside potential right now, even with the recent substantial dip.
Tesla is an innovative brand, but I need to see the valuation reconnect to the reality of the current fundamentals before I'll be willing to make a long-term purchase. Moreover, rivals such as Rivian Automotive and Lucid are gaining traction in the U.S. and are fairly priced. While these competitors won't overtake Tesla anytime soon, it's yet another challenge that Musk's company is going to have to tackle in the coming years.

Tesla Is Down 30% This Year. Here's Why I'm Still Waiting on the Sidelines.

Rivian (NASDAQ:RIVN) reports earnings later this month. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
Earlier this year, Rivian officially began production of its R2 SUV. This model is the company’s first vehicle priced under $50,000.

Previously, Rivian’s luxury vehicle lineup had starting prices of around $70,000 or greater. Given that 69% of Americans want to spend less than $50,000 on their next vehicle purchase, getting an affordable model to market enables Rivian to reach tens of millions of new potential buyers.
Scaling the sales of its R2 SUV will be critical for Rivian’s long-term success. While the EV maker has generated positive gross margins in recent quarters, the company still needs to achieve mass scale to reach net profitability. Affordable models will also allow the company to sell to robotaxi operators that lack internal manufacturing capabilities. After all, there’s a reason why Uber Technologies (NYSE:UBER) placed a $1.25 billion order for up to 50,000 R2s earlier this year.
If Rivian reveals promising R2 production and sales traction, expect shares to reward those efforts. What are Wall Street analysts expecting on this front? Let’s take a look.
Here’s what Wall Street expects from Rivian this quarter
Alexander Potter, an analyst with Piper Sandler, expects positive news this quarter. On July 27, he upgraded Rivian stock to “overweight” from “neutral”, upping his price target from $18 to $20.
Why is Potter so bullish? For exactly the reasons just described. Namely, Potter expects good news for Rivian’s R2 sales ramp.
Potter isn’t coming out of nowhere with his bullishness. Earlier this month, Rivian raised its 2026 delivery forecast to 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles. The company’s previous forecast called for sales volumes between 62,000 and 67,000. The forecast bump was fueled by second-quarter deliveries of 12,194 vehicles, surpassing its previous guidance of 9,000 to 11,000. Current estimates call for roughly 20,000 to 25,000 R2s to be delivered this year.

Rivian likely pre-released its second-quarter vehicle volumes to shore up its stock price ahead of a stock sale that raised $1.25 billion in financing — a move designed to comply with the covenants of a loan the company previously received from the U.S. Department of Energy.
All of these factors, in combination, have Potter bullish on Rivian stock heading into the earnings release.
“First, RIVN boosted delivery guidance, thanks in part to expensive gasoline and a renewed interest in EVs,” he explained in a note to clients. “Second, Rivian has apparently avoided launch issues with the R2 SUV, a pivotal new product. Finally, a recent capital raise should fund growth while reducing dilution risk.”
I have to agree with Potter’s assessment. Earlier this year, I called Rivian my top growth stock for 2026 based on these exact catalysts. I also stressed Rivian’s potential to sell into the fledgling robotaxi market — a point Potter seems to agree with.
According to a report from CNBC, Potter is impressed with Rivian’s “in-house electronic control units and printed circuit boards, two critical systems for vehicles, which he thinks puts the company on track to be a power player in the future environment and in a strong position to develop autonomous vehicles.”
I view self-driving vehicles as a long-term growth catalyst for Rivian, with R2 sales providing a more near-term opportunity. But these two catalysts are heavily intertwined, and I expect good news on both fronts this quarter.

Rivian Automotive's Next Earnings Report on July 30 Could Send the Stock Soaring. Here's Why.

Elon Musk's Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX) completed its historic initial public offering (IPO) on Friday, June 12. The rocket and satellite company raised a record $75 billion at an unprecedented market value of $1.7 trillion.
SpaceX stock is down 42% from its post-IPO high, partly because some insiders will be allowed to sell shares two days after the company reports second-quarter financial results on August 4. But a rich valuation, debt issuance, and launch delays have also factored into the decline.

Nevertheless, Wall Street is overwhelmingly bullish. Among 37 analysts, SpaceX has a median target of $225 per share, implying 96% upside from its current share price of $115. My prediction is a little more conservative: I think SpaceX will trade at $167 per share by June 2027.
Here's why.
SpaceX is chasing a $26.5 trillion opportunity in AI products and services
SpaceX is a vertically integrated business that designs hardware and software across three operating segments: space, connectivity, and artificial intelligence. The company has a key competitive advantage in reusable rockets, which dramatically reduce launch costs. That economic moat has helped SpaceX build Starlink, the largest satellite internet service in the world.
SpaceX also runs two Colossus data centers, which collectively form the largest AI training cluster on the planet. Using its low-cost launch capabilities, massive satellite network, and AI expertise, the company plans to provide AI cloud services from orbital (space-based) data centers. Solar power and cold temperatures could solve the energy and cooling problems that limit terrestrial data centers.
"We believe we are the only company with a commercially viable path to building orbital AI compute at scale," SpaceX explains its SEC Form S-1. The company values its addressable market at $28.5 billion, and the vast majority of that sum ($26.5 trillion) is attributed to AI products and services.
Wall Street says SpaceX's revenue will grow at 102% annually through 2028
In the first quarter, SpaceX reported a net loss of $4.2 billion, but the company has plenty of cash on its balance sheet after raising $75 billion from its initial public offering (IPO) and AI revenue is likely to grow quickly in the quarters ahead. Anthropic and Alphabet have agreed to rent cloud capacity from SpaceX for monthly fees of $1.25 billion and $920 million, respectively.
SpaceX brought in revenue of $19.3 billion in the past year, and the company currently has a market value of $1.5 trillion as of July 25. Those figures give SpaceX a price-to-sales ratio of 78. That would be a very rich valuation in almost any circumstance, but it's tolerable here because Wall Street estimates sales will increase at 102% annually through 2028. In other words, SpaceX currently trades at about 11 times projected sales for 2028.
History says SpaceX's stock price will increase 45% by June 2027
SpaceX had a market capitalization of $1.7 trillion at its IPO price of $135 per share. That made it the largest IPO in history by a wide margin. There is no perfect comparison, but we can look at how other large IPOs have performed to make an educated guess about where SpaceX is headed.
The following chart shows the 10 largest U.S. IPOs (as measured by market value at the IPO price) between 2016 and 2025. It also details how those stocks performed during their first year on the market.

Among the 10 largest U.S. IPOs in history, the average stock returned 24% during its first year on the public market. If SpaceX follows that trajectory, the stock will trade at $167 per share in June 2027. That implies 45% upside from the current share price of $115.
I think $167 per share is a sensible forecast. It implies a market value of $2.1 trillion, which means the stock would trade at 30 times projected sales for 2027. That is not cheap, but it is much cheaper than the current valuation.
More importantly, even if I am wrong about SpaceX reaching $167 per share by June 2027, I think patient investors who buy the stock today will outperform the S&P 500 over the next five years. I would start with a small position and add shares if the stock continues to move lower.

Prediction: This Will Be SpaceX's Stock Price by June 2027 (Hint: It's Time to Buy)

Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) stock sank nearly 15% in value this week after reporting quarterly earnings. Clearly, the market disliked what it heard from the company’s management team, including CEO Elon Musk. But there was some good news tucked into the data-packed announcement.
On the positive front, Tesla’s sales rose 26% year-over-year to $28.24 billion, beating most Wall Street estimates. Gross margins, however, slid from 19.2% in the first quarter to 16.3%, reflecting weaker pricing power and various one-time charges. Weaker margins hurt the company’s adjusted earnings per share, which came in at $0.33, below consensus estimates of roughly $0.50.

Most importantly, Tesla revealed surging capital expenditures, which shot higher 142% year-over-year to $5.8 billion. The company confirmed that capital expenditures for the year will exceed $25 billion to support its ongoing efforts to scale for AI compute, robotics, and chip manufacturing infrastructure. Surging capital expenditures weighed on free cash flow, which came in at negative $1.09 billion for the quarter.
Why did the market punish Tesla stock so harshly following earnings? The biggest concern deals with the pace and scale of its robotaxi division’s expansion.
Last year, Elon Musk told investors that its robotaxi service would expand at a "hyper-exponential rate". This quarter, however, Musk took a more cautious approach, warning of a slower-than-expected rollout. Analysts pushed back on the tone shift, with one pressing Musk on why the company’s robotaxi fleet was stuck “in the dozens as opposed to hundreds,” as previous guidance had predicted.
The market is clearly concerned about Tesla’s rising capital expenditures amid limited traction in growth markets like robotaxis. In other words, the market wants to see more from the company in exchange for higher spending.
Does Tesla’s robotaxi struggles portend trouble ahead for other EV stocks like Rivian (NASDAQ:RIVN) and Lucid Group (NASDAQ:LCID), both of which are expected to benefit from growth in the global robotaxi market? The short answer is yes, but the full answer is more complicated.
Here’s how the news from Tesla impacts Rivian and Lucid Group
Robotaxis are set to become a majorglobal market Some experts believe that robotaxis could ultimately become a $5 trillion to $10 trillion market. Tesla is primed to take a huge chunk of this market. Its business is largely vertically integrated, with an ability to both manufacture the physical vehicles and create the software necessary for operating a robotaxi fleet at scale.
Rivian and Lucid have slightly different exposures. For now, these two businesses are positioned as supplier to the robotaxi market rather than direct competitors.
Popular ridesharing service Uber Technologies (NYSE:UBER), for example, is investing aggressively to scale its robotaxi fleet. But Uber doesn’t have any internal manufacturing capabilities. So, it must purchase vehicles from other companies.

Earlier this year, Uber agreed to purchase up to 50,000 Rivian R2 SUVs in a $1.25 billion deal. Uber also forged a $500 million deal with Lucid for 35,000 vehicles.
Tesla won’t be buying robotaxi vehicles directly from Rivian or Lucid given it can produce its own vehicles. But Tesla’s inability to scale it robotaxi fleet is an indicator that the robotaxi industry in general may be experiencing scaling issues. And while Rivian and Lucid have growth catalysts besides selling robotaxis, their respective deals with Uber show how lucrative that end market can be for both companies long term.
In short, investors should pump the brakes on expectations for Lucid and Rivian’s robotaxi growth potential. Robotaxis will still be a lucrative market long term. But judging by Tesla’s struggles, the next year or two may be more difficult for Rivian and Lucid when it comes to benefiting from robotaxi operators need for more fleet vehicles.
