(RTTNews) - Rio Tinto, in collaboration with China's State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) Qiyuan, has launched a pioneering trial of battery swap electric haul truck technology at the Oyu Tolgoi copper mine in Mongolia. This marks Rio Tinto's first deployment of battery swap electric trucks in surface mining, representing a significant step toward reducing emissions from its haulage fleet—one of the largest contributors to its Scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint, the company said in a statement.
Over the past year, the companies have delivered and installed a fleet of eight 91-tonne Tonly electric trucks, supported by 13 high-capacity batteries (each 800 kWh), a battery swapping station, a static charger, and the necessary infrastructure. These trucks will be used for tailings dam construction and topsoil transportation, giving Rio Tinto direct operational experience with battery electric vehicles and swap charging systems.
The battery swapping technology enables a depleted battery to be replaced in under seven minutes, eliminating the need for lengthy charging at fixed stations. This approach significantly reduces downtime and enhances fleet efficiency.
The trial will continue through the end of 2026, allowing Rio Tinto to evaluate the feasibility of broader adoption across its global fleet of 700 haul trucks. Notably, around 100 of these are small to medium class vehicles (100-200 tonne payload), which are well-suited for current-generation battery swap systems.

QSM Asset Management Takes $11.5 Million Stake in Rio Tinto, Expands Energy Exposure

Rio Tinto Group RIO reported iron ore shipments (on a 100% basis) of 84.3 million tons (Mt) for the third quarter of 2025, which was flat year over year. On a sequential basis, shipments rose 6%. This marked the second-highest third-quarter shipment since 2019. Total ron ore production for the quarter was 84.1 Mt, in line with the year-ago quarter. RIO’s share of shipments was at 71.4 Mt (down 1%) and its share in total production was 71.8 Mt (up 1%).
Bauxite production rose 8.5% to 16.4 Mt in the third quarter. Bauxite achieved its second consecutive record quarterly production, driven by Amrun operating above nameplate capacity.
Rio Tinto’s aluminum output was up 6% year over year to 857 thousand tons. Alumina production increased 7% to 1.9 Mt, reflecting improved performance at Yarwun and Alumar. This was somewhat negated by the planned shutdown at Vaudreuil.
In the third quarter, mined copper production was 204 thousand tons, 10% higher than the year-ago quarter. Production at Kennecott was 69% lower year over year due to planned annual maintenance shutdown through September. Copper production at Escondida increased 9% year over year, aided by a 13% improvement in concentrator performance.
This was negated by a 6% decline in head grade. Oyu Tolgoi’s production was 78% higher year over year to a record 89 thousand tons, driven by continued underground ramp-up.
Titanium dioxide slag production declined 1% from the year-ago quarter, led by weak market conditions. Production at Iron Ore Company of Canada was 11% higher on a year-over-year basis.
Rio Tinto’s Production Guidance for 2025
RIO expects Pilbara iron ore shipments (100% basis) at the lower end of 323-338 Mt. This is due to cyclone impacts in the first quarter of 2025.
Backed by the better-than-expected performance, the company has increased Bauxite’s guidance to 59-61 Mt from the prior stated 57-59 Mt. This indicates higher utilization rates, particularly at Weipa.
Alumina production is anticipated between 7.4 Mt and 7.8 Mt, while aluminum production is expected to be 3.25-3.45 Mt for 2025. Copper output is predicted to be at the higher end of the earlier stated 780-850 kt. Titanium dioxide slag production is expected to be near the lower end of 1-1.2 Mt.
RIO’s Cost Guidance for 2025
Rio Tinto expects Pilbara iron ore unit cash costs between $23.00 and $24.50 per ton. Copper C1 unit costs are forecast between $110 and $130 per pound.

Fidelity Enhanced International ETF Experiences Big Inflow

(RTTNews) - Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto Plc (RTNTF, RIO, RIO.L, RTPPF) reported that its Pilbara iron ore shipments (100% basis) for the third quarter of 2025 was 84.35 million tons, down from 84.55 million tons in the prior year. But, quarterly Pilbara iron ore production (100% basis) was 84.10 million tons, up from 84.07 million tons in the previous year.
Rio Tinto Chief Executive Simon Trott said, "We are on track to meet production guidance for 2025, with an upwards revision to bauxite this quarter, and are well positioned to deliver compelling mid-term production growth."
The company continues to expect Pilbara iron ore shipments in 2025 to be at the lower end of the guidance range of 323 million tonnes -338 million tonnes, following a 13 Mt impact from cyclones in the first quarter.
Full-year bauxite production guidance has been upgraded, driven by operational excellence across the bauxite business—particularly at Amrun. The guidance range for bauxite production has increased from 57 million tonnes -59 million tonnes to 59 million tonnes -61 million tonnes, reflecting consistently higher utilisation rates, especially at Weipa, where Amrun continues to exceed nameplate capacity.
Copper production remains on track to reach the higher end of full-year guidance, supported by a strong ramp-up at Oyu Tolgoi.

Rio Tinto Q3 Pilbara Iron Ore Shipments Down; Upgrades FY Bauxite Production Guidance

Rio Tinto Group RIO announced that it will jointly invest to develop the West Angelas Sustaining Project as part of its Robe River Joint Venture with Mitsui & Co. MITSY and Nippon Steel. This move showcases solid partnerships within the joint venture and the Yinhawangka and Ngarlawangga Peoples.
Details of Rio Tinto’s West Angelas Sustaining Project
RIO will invest $733 million with Mitsui and Nippon Steel, wherein Rio Tinto's share will be $389 million. The West Angelas Sustaining Project aims to develop iron ore deposits in the West Angelas hub, which has been a key part of Rio Tinto Iron Ore since 2002.
RIO, Mitsui and Nippon Steel have received all the required approvals from the State and Federal Government to develop the project. The project will keep maintaining the West Angelas hub's 35 million tons of annual production capacity, extending mining life. The project will utilize the existing West Angelas processing infrastructure, and construct a new infrastructure and 22 km of haul roads.
Rio Tinto, along with the Yinhawangka and Ngarlawangga Peoples , has curated Social Cultural Heritage Management Plans for the West Angelas Sustaining Project, ensuring the protection of cultural heritage and the environment. The project will create 600 jobs and employ 950 people for equivalent roles at the West Angelas hub.
RIO’s Focus on Mine Investment
The company is set to invest more than $13 billion in new mines, plants and equipment between 2025 and 2027.
In May 2025, the company announced that it would invest $1.2 billion (CAD $1.7 billion) to modernize its 100-year-old Isle-Maligne hydroelectric power plant in Quebec, Canada. This is RIO’s most significant investment in its hydroelectric assets in more than seven decades.
In June 2025, it announced plans to invest $1.6 billion with Hancock Prospecting to develop the Hope Downs 2 iron ore project in Western Australia's Pilbara region, where Rio Tinto's share will be $800 million. RIO's investment in these projects underscores its commitment to Australian iron ore and the long-term sustainability of Pilbara's production.
In August 2025, the company approved an investment of $180 million for the Norman Creek access project, which will enable mining of the Norman Creek region of Amrun. Norman Creek is an integral development for the long-term sustainability of the company’s Weipa operations.

Rio Tinto to Jointly Invest $733M in West Angelas Sustaining Project

(RTTNews) - Rio Tinto, Mitsui, and Nippon Steel have committed a combined investment of US$733 million, with Rio Tinto contributing US389 million, to develop the West Angelas Sustaining Project, part of the Robe River Joint Venture in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The project has received all required approvals from State and Federal Government authorities.
Rio Tinto said that the initiative will unlock new iron ore deposits within the West Angelas hub, preserving its annual production capacity of 35 million tonnes and extending mining operations well into the future. It will utilize existing processing infrastructure and involve the construction of new non-process infrastructure precincts and 22 kilometres of haul roads.
Ore from the new deposits will be transported autonomously to the hub, with first production expected in 2027. Approximately 600 jobs will be created during the construction phase, and the project will support around 950 full-time equivalent roles once operational.
This development is part of Rio Tinto's broader tranche of replacement projects in the Pilbara, which collectively aim to maintain a total production capacity of approximately 130 million tonnes per annum.
In addition, progress continues on the pre-feasibility study for Rhodes Ridge, an undeveloped iron ore deposit targeting up to 40Mtpa in initial capacity, with first ore anticipated by 2030.
The Robe River Joint Venture is owned by Rio Tinto (53%), Mitsui Iron Ore (33%), and Nippon Steel (14%).

Exchange traded funds (ETFs) trade just like stocks, but instead of ''shares'' investors are actually buying and selling ''units''. These ''units'' can be traded back and forth just like stocks, but can also be created or destroyed to accommodate investor demand. Each week we monitor the week-over-week change in shares outstanding data, to keep a lookout for those ETFs experiencing notable inflows (many new units created) or outflows (many old units destroyed). Creation of new units will mean the underlying holdings of the ETF need to be purchased, while destruction of units involves selling underlying holdings, so large flows can also impact the individual components held within ETFs.
