(RTTNews) - Yinhawangka Aboriginal Corporation and Rio Tinto have signed an Interim Modernized Agreement, marking a significant step in their long-standing relationship. This agreement builds on the 2013 Participation Agreement and sets out how both parties will work together, creating a pathway toward a fuller modernized agreement that will guide Rio Tinto's operations on Yinhawangka Country over the long term.
The Interim Modernized Agreement introduces a co-management approach that reflects modern expectations for partnership. Yinhawangka will be engaged earlier and more meaningfully in mine planning, with both parties jointly making key decisions on cultural heritage protection and environmental management. Dedicated funding has been included to support Yinhawangka's participation in co-management.
A central feature of the agreement is the right for Yinhawangka to raise concerns about Country, the environment, or cultural heritage at any time. It also establishes a joint committee where Yinhawangka and Rio Tinto collaborate early on new projects and major operational changes, ensuring Yinhawangka voices shape decisions while balancing community priorities and business needs.
This binding Interim Modernised Agreement lays the foundation for a full modernised agreement, which Yinhawangka Aboriginal Corporation and Rio Tinto plan to finalise in 2026.

Yinhawangka Aboriginal And Rio Tinto Sign Interim Modernized Agreement To Strengthen Partnership

(RTTNews) - Rio Tinto has unveiled its first Pilbara-made iron ore rail car, produced in Karratha as part of a A$150 million partnership with Australian rail industry supplier Gemco Rail. The initiative aims to build 100 rail cars in Western Australia, reinforcing the company's commitment to local manufacturing.
The milestone follows the earlier completion of 40 rail cars at Gemco Rail's Perth facility. The remaining units will be constructed at a new, purpose-built workshop in Karratha, marking a significant expansion of regional manufacturing capacity.
To support the project, machinery for assembling rail cars and refurbishing bearings has been relocated from Perth to the Karratha facility. The workshop is expected to generate up to 25 local jobs, providing a boost to the community.
The newly built rail cars will begin transporting iron ore this month from Rio Tinto's 18 Pilbara mines to its Dampier and Cape Lambert port facilities. Each car has the capacity to carry up to 118 tonnes of iron ore, enhancing efficiency in the company's supply chain.
Formed in 2023, the partnership between Rio Tinto, Gemco Rail, and CRRC Qiqihar Rolling Stock Co. Ltd, with support from the Western Australian Government, highlights Rio Tinto's ongoing investment in local industry and regional communities.

Rio Tinto Rolls Out First Pilbara-Made Iron Ore Rail Car

Rio Tinto Group RIO announced that it produced the first copper from the Johnson Camp mine in Arizona, leveraging its Nuton Technology. The successful deployment of Rio Tinto’s Nuton technology enables copper production that's cleaner, faster and more efficient at an industrial scale.
Details on Rio Tinto’s Nuton Technology
RIO’s Nuton modular system uses a combination of biology, chemistry, engineering and digital tools. This allows the technology’s rapid scaling and customization for different ore bodies, unlocking previously uneconomic resources. Nuton has the capability to move from concept to production in 18 months compared with the industry’s typical 18 years.
This innovative copper processing technology eliminates concentration, smelting and refining, shortening supply chains and producing copper cathode at the mine. The technology can also extend mine life and extract value from previously uneconomic ores. Rio Tinto expects Nuton’s environmental performance to exceed conventional copper processing technologies. It can work using up to 80% less water and up to 60% lower carbon emissions compared to traditional concentrator routes.
The successful deployment at the Johnson Camp mine involves designing and delivering a technology package for a heap leach pad, targeting around 30,000 tons of refined copper production within a four-year demo period. Employing Nuton, Rio Tinto aims to produce copper with the lowest carbon footprint in the United States at the Johnson Camp.
Rio Tinto will now focus on validating long-term technical performance using Nuton, including multi-year testing and independent third-party verification. The company will perform an internal review to keep consistent recovery rates and environmental performance in check.
Rio Tinto is partnering on projects in North and South America to assess deployment potential. The company is also working with U.S. customers to boost domestic copper supply.

RIO Boosts Copper Innovation With First Copper Output Using Nuton Tech

Albemarle Corporation’s ALB shares have shot up 26.2% in the past month, outperforming the Zacks Chemical - Diversified industry’s decline of 11.5% and the S&P 500’s fall of 1.2%. The rally has been driven by the company’s better-than-expected performance in the third quarter, aided by volume growth in the Energy Storage segment and its cost reduction efforts.
ALB’s peers, Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile S.A. SQM and Rio Tinto Group RIO, have gained 34.4% and 0.7%, respectively, over the same period.

Healthy customer demand, capacity expansion, and plant productivity improvements are supporting its volumes. ALB saw higher sales volumes in its Energy Storage unit in the third quarter of 2025 on record production from its integrated conversion facilities. The Salar yield improvement project in Chile has achieved a 50% operating rate. The ramp-up at the Meishan lithium conversion facility in China is also progressing ahead of schedule.
Albemarle is also taking aggressive cost-saving and productivity actions in the wake of tumbling lithium prices. The company expects to deliver roughly $450 million in cost and productivity improvements in 2025, having surpassed its initial target of $300-$400 million. ALB is taking actions to maintain its competitive position, including the initiation of a comprehensive review of cost and operating structure, optimization of the conversion network and reduction of capital expenditure. It has lowered the full-year 2025 capital expenditures outlook to around $600 million.
Strong Financial Health Supports ALB’s Capital Allocation
Albemarle remains committed to driving shareholder value by leveraging healthy cash flows and strong liquidity. At the end of the third quarter of 2025, ALB had liquidity of around $3.5 billion, including cash and cash equivalents of around $1.9 billion. Its operating cash flow was around $893.8 million for the first nine months of 2025, up 29% from the prior-year period. ALB expects to generate free cash flow of $300-$400 million in 2025, driven by strong cash conversion, lower capital spending and productivity measures.
The company remains focused on maintaining its dividend payout. It has raised its quarterly dividend for the 30th straight year. ALB offers a dividend yield of 1.4% at the current stock price. Backed by healthy cash flows and sound financial health, the company's dividend is perceived to be safe and reliable.
Soft Lithium Prices Ail ALB Stock
Weaker lithium market prices are weighing on the company’s performance. ALB’s revenues fell roughly 3.5% year over year to $1,307.8 million in the third quarter, hurt by lower prices in Energy Storage. Sales from its Energy Storage unit fell around 8% due to lower lithium market prices. Lithium prices have declined amid slowing demand growth for electric vehicles, inventory glut and increased supply. The uncertain macroeconomic environment and high interest rates have weighed on demand. Weaker lithium prices are likely to continue to hurt the company’s results in the fourth quarter.
ALB’s FY25 Estimates Reflect Positive Sentiment
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 for ALB has been revised upward over the past 60 days. The consensus estimate for the fourth quarter of 2025 has been stable over the same time frame.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 earnings is currently pegged at a loss of $1.24, suggesting a year-over-year increase of 47%. Earnings are expected to register a rise of roughly 30.3% in the fourth quarter.

Albemarle Rallies 26% in a Month: Here's How to Play the Stock

(RTTNews) - Rio Tinto announced plans to reduce production at the Yarwun Alumina Refinery in Gladstone by 40 per cent starting in October 2026. The move is intended to extend the refinery's operational life until 2035 while providing time to explore further life-extension and modernization opportunities.
The decision comes as Yarwun's tailings facility is projected to reach capacity by 2031 under current production levels. By scaling back output, Rio Tinto will gain an additional four years to develop and implement technical solutions that could further prolong the refinery's future.
The production curtailment will affect approximately 180 roles at the refinery. Redeployment planning across Rio Tinto's Gladstone operations is already underway to support impacted employees. Annual alumina production will decrease by about 1.2 million tonnes, though customer requirements and other Rio Tinto operations—including bauxite mines and aluminium smelters—will remain unaffected.
Yarwun continues to be a key operation for Rio Tinto. The company is advancing innovative tailings management solutions, such as neutralisation and centrifuge-based dry tailings, while also prioritising decarbonisation initiatives. These include replacing coal and gas in boilers with biofuels and progressing the Hydrogen Calcination Project, a world-first initiative backed by funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
Currently, Yarwun employs around 725 people and produces approximately 3 million tonnes of alumina annually, supplying Rio Tinto's aluminium smelters and international customers.

When it comes to metals mining companies, Australian stalwart Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO) and Canadian start-up The Metals Company (NASDAQ: TMC) couldn't be more different. Rio Tinto was founded in 1873, while The Metals Company didn't go public until 2021. Rio Tinto has a $114 billion market cap, while The Metals Company's market cap is just $2.5 billion.
But there's one quality these two metals companies have in common: Both are trading significantly off their highs. Rio Tinto is trading at a 25% discount to its pandemic-era high from 2021, and The Metals Company's stock has plunged 30% from its 2025 high, which it just set in October:

Which of these metals companies is the best pick for investors interested in "buying the dip"? There's one clear winner, and it may not be the one you're expecting.
Big vs. small
Rio Tinto is one of the oldest and largest mining companies in the world, with a global network of terrestrial mines. Rio Tinto primarily mines commodity metals like iron ore, aluminum, copper, and lithium, but it also mines other minerals like salt and the white pigment titanium dioxide.
Meanwhile, The Metals Company is laser-focused on a single type of ore, called polymetallic nodules, which are found lying around on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean in international waters. These potato-sized rocks are rich in the commodity metals manganese, cobalt, nickel, and copper. The Metals Company has applied to the International Seabed Authority (ISA) for permission to start extracting them (which really just means picking them up at scale: they're not attached to anything). It hopes to then build processing facilities to extract and refine the ore and sell it.
Why their share prices dropped
Each company experienced a brief surge in stock price before its big decline.
Rio Tinto's 2021 surge was driven by unprecedented global demand for iron ore. Spot prices for iron ore -- which are responsible for about 80% of Rio Tinto's earnings -- skyrocketed from about $90/metric ton to $214/metric ton in mid-2021 during the pandemic lockdowns. When the Chinese government instituted new policies that reduced demand, the spot price dropped and so did Rio Tinto's stock price.
The Metals Company's stock, on the other hand, spiked just last month after China announced it would tighten export controls on rare-earth metals. Although none of the metals in polymetallic nodules are rare-earth minerals, investors may have been hopeful that any metal supply disruptions would encourage the ISA to greenlight additional sources of other critical metals. When the White House started expressing optimism about striking a deal to avoid rare-earth export controls, The Metals Company's shares began to decline again.
Ironically, Rio Tinto's share price wasn't affected by the rare-earth metals news, even though Rio Tinto actually does mine a rare-earth metal -- scandium -- in Canada and Australia.
Which is the better buy?
The U.S. and China have struck a deal to keep the global rare-earth metals supply chain intact (at least, for now), so there's little reason to think that The Metals Company's stock will see any further short-term benefits. But even after its recent share price decline, The Metals Company's shares are still up more than 425% this year. However, it doesn't even expect to begin commercial operations until Q4 2027 at the earliest, and management estimates it won't fully scale until 2043. That's a long time to wait for an investment to pay off.
Meanwhile, Rio Tinto is an investment that's already paying dividends -- literally. Its dividend policy is a bit unusual: It pays one small mid-year dividend and one large end-of-year dividend, both of which fluctuate depending on metal spot prices. When iron ore prices got so high during the pandemic, the company's dividend yield soared to well over 10% as management shared the wealth with company stockholders.
Even when iron ore spot prices are low, Rio Tinto's dividend tends to be generous. Earlier this year, those prices hit a post-pandemic low of about $92/metric ton, but Rio Tinto's dividend yield remained well over 5%. Spot prices have since begin to rebound, to more than $100/metric ton, which is very good for the company. Given Rio Tinto's long history and leading position in this industry, plus its shareholder-friendly dividend policies, it looks like a much better buy right now than the speculative, pre-commercial The Metals Company.

Better Buy: The Metals Company or Rio Tinto?

(RTTNews) - Rio Tinto's Kennecott operation has taken a significant step toward its decarbonisation targets by entering into a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with TerraGen. The agreement secures renewable energy from a newly completed wind farm in Texas, reinforcing Kennecott's commitment to sustainable operations and long-term emissions reduction, Rio Tinto said in a statement.
Under the agreement, Rio Tinto will purchase 78.5 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy generated by TerraGen's 238.5 MW Monte Cristo I Windpower project. Commercial operations were commemorated with a ribbon cutting ceremony on site today.
Rio Tinto has committed to reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050. Around 78% of the electricity Rio Tinto uses globally comes from renewable sources, and the company is making investment and supply decisions to increase this to around 90% by 2030.

Rio Tinto's Kennecott Signs 15-Year VPPA With TerraGen To Advance Decarbonisation Goals

Rio Tinto RIO reported iron ore shipments from Pilbara (on a 100% basis) of 84.3 million tons (Mt) for the third quarter of 2025. It was flat year over year but marked a 6% sequential rise. Despite major maintenance and infrastructure work, this marked Pilbara’s second-highest third-quarter performance since 2019.
Production was also stable year over year at 84.1 MT (on a 100% basis). Gudai-Darri achieved its highest-ever quarterly production in the quarter, with a 51 Mtpa run rate.
RIO’s peer Vale S.A. VALE produced 94.4 MT of iron ore in the third quarter, 3.8% higher than the year-ago quarter. VALE expects iron ore production in 2025 to range between 325 MT and 335 MT.
Other Key Highlights From RIO’s Production Report
Bauxite production rose 9% year over year to 16.4 Mt in the third quarter. This marked the second consecutive quarterly production record with Amrun continuing to operate above nameplate capacity.
Rio Tinto’s aluminum output was up 6% year over year to 0.86 Mt. Alumina output was 1.9 MT, up 7% year over year, driven by improving performance at Yarwun and Alumar, partially offset by a planned shutdown at Vaudreuil.
In the third quarter, copper production was 204 thousand tons, 10% higher than the year-ago quarter. Oyu Tolgoi delivered a record copper production, despite a planned concentrator shutdown in September. Output was also higher at Escondida, but was offset by lower output at Kennecott as it navigates challenging geotechnical conditions impacting the south wall of the mine.
Rio Tinto’s Production Guidance for 2025
Rio Tinto expects Pilbara iron ore shipments (100% basis) to be at the lower end of 323-338 Mt. The range indicated a year-over-year decline of 2% to growth of 3%. The lowered guidance reflects the impact of cyclones in the first quarter. Also, Pilbara iron ore guidance remains subject to the timing of approvals for planned mining areas and heritage clearances.
Bauxite production targeted range is 59-61 MT (revised from 57-59 Mt), which reflects consistently higher utilization rates, particularly at Weipa. The company had produced 58.7 Mt of bauxite in 2024.
Alumina production is anticipated between 7.4 Mt and 7.8 Mt, suggesting growth from the reported output of 7.3 Mt in 2024. Aluminum production is expected to be 3.25-3.45 Mt, whereas it produced 3.3 Mt in 2024.
Rio Tinto expects copper production to come in near the high end of its stated range of 780-850 kt for 2025, attributed to a strong ramp-up at Oyu Tolgoi. The company reported total copper production (mined and refined) of 792.6 kt in 2024.
Rio Tinto Witnesses Upward Earnings Estimate Revisions
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for RIO’s 2025 revenues is pegged at $54.90 billion, suggesting a 1.6% year-over-year uptick. The estimate for earnings for 2025 is pegged at $6.09 per share, projecting a 9.1% decline.

Rio Tinto Lithium aims to grow the capacity of its Tier 1 assets to more than 200 thousand tons per year of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) by 2028
Its ongoing capital investment has delivered four consecutive years of production growth. The company remains on track to deliver on its 3% CAGR production over 2024-2033.
Valuation Looks Attractive for Rio Tinto
Rio Tinto trades at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 11.23, lower than the industry's 16.43. The company is also trading at a discount compared with BHP Group’s 14.21X and and Freeport-McMoRan’s 22.11X. Vale is, however, trading lower at 6.51X.

RIO's Q3 Iron Ore Shipments Up 6% Sequentially: How to Play the Stock?

(RTTNews) - Rio Tinto, in collaboration with China's State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) Qiyuan, has launched a pioneering trial of battery swap electric haul truck technology at the Oyu Tolgoi copper mine in Mongolia. This marks Rio Tinto's first deployment of battery swap electric trucks in surface mining, representing a significant step toward reducing emissions from its haulage fleet—one of the largest contributors to its Scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint, the company said in a statement.
Over the past year, the companies have delivered and installed a fleet of eight 91-tonne Tonly electric trucks, supported by 13 high-capacity batteries (each 800 kWh), a battery swapping station, a static charger, and the necessary infrastructure. These trucks will be used for tailings dam construction and topsoil transportation, giving Rio Tinto direct operational experience with battery electric vehicles and swap charging systems.
The battery swapping technology enables a depleted battery to be replaced in under seven minutes, eliminating the need for lengthy charging at fixed stations. This approach significantly reduces downtime and enhances fleet efficiency.
The trial will continue through the end of 2026, allowing Rio Tinto to evaluate the feasibility of broader adoption across its global fleet of 700 haul trucks. Notably, around 100 of these are small to medium class vehicles (100-200 tonne payload), which are well-suited for current-generation battery swap systems.
