Used-vehicle retail sales rose 27.2% from the year-ago period to $1.85 billion and surpassed our forecast of $1.72 billion, driven by higher-than-anticipated unit sales. Total retail used vehicles sold were 60,240 units, up 22.3% year over year, exceeding our expectation of 58,438 units. The average selling price per unit was $30,713, up 4.1% year over year. The gross profit from the unit was $96.4 million, up 19.5% year over year.
Used-vehicle wholesale sales rose 57% year over year to $163.8 million and beat our expectation of $115.7 million. The unit earned a gross profit of $0.5 million against a gross loss of $1.1 million in the year-ago period. In the Parts and Service business, the top line rose 25% to $718.4 million and gross profit increased 27.1% to $402.8 million year over year. Revenues from the Finance and Insurance business were $237.8 million, up 18.8% from the year-ago period’s level.

In the reported quarter, revenues from the U.S. business segment rose 6.5% year over year to $4.18 billion but missed our forecast of $4.22 billion. The segment’s gross profit rose 9.1% to $728.7 million but fell short of our prediction of $732.4 million. During the reported quarter, retail new-vehicle, retail used-vehicle and wholesale used-vehicle units sold were 41,067, 39,665 and 9,661, respectively.
In the second quarter, revenues jumped 96.9% year over year to $1.53 billion for the U.K. business segment, beating our estimate of $1.28 billion. Gross profit was $207.1 million, which surged 109.6% from the year-ago quarter and beat our projection of $138.4 million. During the reported quarter, the retail new-vehicle, retail used-vehicle and wholesale used-vehicle units sold were 14,696, 20,575 and 7,369, respectively.

Selling, general and administrative expenses were up 29.9% year over year to $646.1 million. Group 1 had cash and cash equivalents of $52.7 million as of June 30, 2025, up from $34.4 million as of Dec. 31, 2024. Total debt was $3.2 billion as of June 30, 2025, up from $2.91 billion as of Dec. 31, 2024.

Group 1 Q2 Earnings Surpass Estimates, Revenues Increase Y/Y

Tesla Q2 Earnings Surpass Expectations, Revenues Decline Y/Y

LKQ Corporation LKQ delivered adjusted earnings of 87 cents per share for second-quarter 2025, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 93 cents. The earnings also declined from 98 cents reported in the year-ago period. The aftermarket auto parts distributor registered quarterly revenues of $3.64 billion, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.61 billion. The top line, however, fell from the year-ago level of $3.71 billion. Parts and Services organic revenues decreased 3.4% year over year.

LKQ Misses Q2 Earnings Estimates, Slashes FY25 Guidance

O’Reilly Automotive, Inc. ORLY reported second-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of 78 cents, which marginally beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 77 cents. The bottom line also increased from 70 cents in the prior-year quarter.

Ford Leads in Number of Recalls, Faces Costly Penalties
Ford Motor Company has been outdoing all automakers in the number of recalls this year. In its latest recall, Ford had to pull out 694,271 SUVs in the United States and its territories. Models including 2021-24 Bronco Sport, 2020-22 Escape and 2019-24 Kuga vehicles were a part of this recall, amounting to about 858,000 vehicles globally. The impacted vehicles have a problem with fuel leaks that could heighten the risk of the vehicle catching on fire. The company is subject to a cost of $570 million, owing to the blow from the recall in its second quarter 2025 results.
NHTSA filing states that fuel injectors in some vehicles may crack, causing leaks that could lead to a fire. Drivers might notice a fuel smell, warning lights, smoke, or flames. According to NHTSA's data, Ford has been topping recall filings since 2020, signaling its struggle with quality. Ford's consent order with NHTSA might also be a reason why old and new recalls have been surfacing lately. This consent order also resulted in Ford agreeing to pay up to $165 million in fines, the second-largest civil penalty in NHTSA history, following the Takata airbag case.
Ford has responded to this issue with a software update that would redirect fuel away from ignition sources, but only as a temporary fix. Although no injuries resulting from this issue have been reported, eight vehicles experienced underhood fires. Ford claims that six of these vehicles had not been installed with the recommended software update. The company had a history of two similar issues that resulted in a recall of 42,000 vehicles. This recall supersedes the prior recalls, for which remedy developments are underway.
Shares of Ford have slumped 16.7% over the past year compared with the industry's 4.2% decline.

Ford Motor CompanyF has been outdoing all automakers in the number of recalls this year. In its latest recall, Ford had to pull out 694,271 SUVs in the United States and its territories. Models including 2021-24 Bronco Sport, 2020-22 Escape and 2019-24 Kuga vehicles were a part of this recall, amounting to about 858,000 vehicles globally. The impacted vehicles have a problem with fuel leaks that could heighten the risk of the vehicle catching on fire. The company is subject to a cost of $570 million, owing to the blow from the recall in its second quarter 2025 results.
NHTSA filing states that fuel injectors in some vehicles may crack, causing leaks that could lead to a fire. Drivers might notice a fuel smell, warning lights, smoke, or flames. According to NHTSA’s data, Ford has been topping recall filings since 2020, signaling its struggle with quality. Ford’s consent order with NHTSA might also be a reason why old and new recalls have been surfacing lately. This consent order also resulted in Ford agreeing to pay up to $165 million in fines, the second-largest civil penalty in NHTSA history, following the Takata airbag case.
Ford has responded to this issue with a software update that would redirect fuel away from ignition sources, but only as a temporary fix. Although no injuries resulting from this issue have been reported, eight vehicles experienced underhood fires. Ford claims that six of these vehicles had not been installed with the recommended software update. The company had a history of two similar issues that resulted in a recall of 42,000 vehicles. This recall supersedes the prior recalls, for which remedy developments are underway.
Shares of Ford have slumped 16.7% over the past year compared with the industry’s 4.2% decline.

Big Oil's Q2 Outlook: Downstream Gains, Upstream Pains
The upcoming earnings reports for big oil and energy companies will tell a story of two different worlds. On the one hand, we will likely see lower profits from simply drilling for oil and gas (or the 'upstream' side of the business). On the other hand, businesses that refine crude oil into products like gasoline and make chemicals (known as 'downstream') might show surprising strength.
Major players like ExxonMobil, Shell and BP have already given us hints. They are seeing profits squeezed from falling oil and gas prices. So, as these companies share their results in the coming weeks, everyone will be watching their ability to control costs, how well their refineries performed, and if demand for energy is truly recovering.
ExxonMobil: Leaning on Refineries to Counter Lower Prices
ExxonMobil, the world's largest integrated energy company, expects its second-quarter earnings to take a hit because of lower oil and gas prices. The American supermajor recently warned that its upstream earnings could fall by as much as $1.9 billion from the first-quarter level. This big drop is mostly due to oil prices bringing in $1.2 billion less, and natural gas prices adding up to a $700 million hit. Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration ("EIA") confirms this trend: WTI crude oil averaged just $63.54 in April and $68.17 in June, down from $75.74 in January.
But it's not all bad news for ExxonMobil. It might actually see a modest boost from its refining and chemical businesses, with refining profits potentially adding between $100 million and $500 million. However, planned maintenance work and other timing issues could lessen those gains. With the Zacks Consensus Estimate for ExxonMobil's EPS down nearly 33% from last year to $1.44, the pressure is squarely on its non-drilling segments to stabilize the overall results.
BP: Production Up, But Prices Down
London-based BP is heading into its second-quarter earnings with a mixed bag of expectations. On the bright side, the Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) company expects to pump out more oil and gas than initially predicted, and even more than it did in the first quarter. This boost is largely thanks to higher output from their U.S. shale operations. However, BP has also warned that lower crude oil prices will hit its drilling profits hard, by about $800 million. Weaker natural gas prices are also expected to weigh on earnings, though to a lesser extent.
Where BP might really shine is in its refining business. It anticipates refining profits jumping from $15.20 per barrel in the first quarter to $21.10 in the second. This could potentially boost its "customers and products" segment by $300 million to $500 million. Plus, BP expects its total debt to dip below the first-quarter level of $27 billion, indicating sound financial management. With the consensus EPS mark at 60 cents (down 40% from last year), any gains from refining will be vital in cushioning the blow from weaker oil and gas prices.
Shell: Navigating Headwinds With Refining Strength
Europe's largest oil company, Shell, is also facing a challenging quarter, with several parts of its business dealing with headwinds. The company expects second-quarter average production for its Integrated Gas division to be 900,000–940,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day compared with 927,000 achieved in the January-March period. LNG output is now expected to be between 6.4 million and 6.8 million tons, and gas trading results are likely to be weaker than in the first quarter. On the traditional drilling side, production is expected to decline to 1.66 million–1.76 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, due to both scheduled maintenance and the sale of its Nigerian SPDC assets.
Still, Shell's refining margins look strong, rising from $6.20 per barrel in the first quarter to $8.90 per barrel in the second. This is supported by better utilization of its refineries. However, the company's chemicals business is expected to report a loss due to unplanned shutdowns at its Monaca plant. Shell's renewables and energy solutions segment's bottom line will likely be between $400 million loss and $200 million profit. The Outlook: Silver Linings for Energy Investors
As is evident, the refining side of the energy business is showing remarkable strength. Companies like ExxonMobil, BP and Shell are seeing much better profits from turning crude oil into fuels and other products. That's why, despite the pressure on oil and gas drilling operations due to lower prices, the second-quarter outlook for energy investors isn't entirely gloomy.
Looking ahead, global demand for oil remains steady, with summer travel and increased electricity use driving higher consumption. Demand for natural gas in the United States is also growing stronger, thanks to mid-summer heat and improving flows of LNG exports. As companies maintain discipline in their supply and excess inventories slowly return to normal levels, the stage could be set for firmer prices in the second half of 2025.

What does this mean for Ford and investors? The implications are significant. Quality lapses could hurt consumer trust, and inflate warranty and recall costs. Ford stock remains down by about 15% over the past 12 months, while the S&P 500 is up 11%, reflecting investor concern over the company’s mounting operational and reputational challenges. How The Recalls Impact Ford
The escalating number of recalls could prove expensive. Ford must cover the expenses of repairing or replacing defective components across millions of vehicles. This would include the cost of parts, labor, and logistical expenses to manage the recall process. More importantly, the steady stream of safety issues might hurt consumer trust and Ford’s reputation for reliability. As quality concerns mount, Ford risks losing market share to competitors who are perceived as more dependable, particularly as the auto industry eventually pivots toward electrification. CEO Jim Farley has already acknowledged Ford’s disadvantage in this space, noting the company is trailing Chinese automakers that now have a lead in several global EV markets.
These quality issues are already hitting Ford’s bottom line. Warranty costs have become a persistent drag, surging 22% to $6 billion in 2024, largely driven by recall-related repairs. Since recalls typically fall under warranty coverage, these new issues directly add to these costs. These issues weigh on margins and make it difficult for Ford to improve profitability, particularly as it forecasts a $5 billion to $5.4 billion loss in its electric vehicle segment this year.
How Ford Could Fix Issues
In response to these quality and cost challenges, Ford is doubling down on internal testing and product validation. Last year, CEO Farley has said that Ford is now “testing vehicles to failure” under extreme conditions to catch defects earlier in the development cycle. However, the company has warned that it could take up to 18 months before these changes begin to show results in lower warranty claims and better product reliability.
In the meantime, Ford’s core product lineup continues to show strength. The company reported a 14.2% year-over-year increase in U.S. sales during Q2 2025, reaching 612,095 units. Growth was driven primarily by strong demand for pickups such as the F-Series, Ranger, and Maverick, which collectively saw a 15% increase. F-Series sales rose 11.5% to 222,459 units – marking the best Q2 since 2019. Ford Pro Super Duty sales increased by 13.5%, while hybrid models also posted gains.
Notably, the Maverick achieved a record quarter with 48,041 units sold, with nearly 60% of buyers new to the Ford brand. The EV market is also cooling, with bellwether Tesla seeing deliveries drop nearly 14% in Q2. This could provide a breather for Ford, which has been a laggard in the space. Slower growth in EV demand could give Ford more time to monetize its gas-based vehicles and pricey pickups while getting its quality back on track.

Will Mounting Recalls Weigh on Ford Stock?

Tesla TSLA is set to release second-quarter 2025 results on July 23, after the closing bell. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the to-be-reported quarter’s earnings and revenues is pegged at 40 cents per share and $22.6 billion, respectively.
The consensus mark for second-quarter earnings per share has declined by a cent in the past seven days. The estimate for the bottom line implies a 23% contraction from the year-ago levels. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for quarterly revenues suggests a year-over-year decline of 11.3%.
In the last earnings season, the company missed earnings estimates. In the trailing four quarters, Tesla missed estimates thrice and beat once, with the average negative earnings surprise being 8.3%.

Factors to Shape Q2 Results
Tesla delivered 384,122 cars (373,728 Model 3/Y and 10,394 other models) worldwide in the second quarter. The figure declined 13.5% from the year-ago quarter, marking it the biggest quarterly sales drop in the company’s history. This was also its second consecutive quarterly drop. The deliveries also missed our estimate of 420,079 units.
In the first quarter of 2025, Tesla attributed weak deliveries to production disruption associated with the Model Y changeover. However, this doesn’t hold true for the second quarter as the new Model Y has been ramped up across factories. In fact, Tesla is producing more and building up inventories, which clearly indicates a demand problem. The sales took a big hit in Europe, especially. Tesla’s brand image is not the same as before. The company’s aging model lineup and CEO Elon Musk’s increasingly polarizing image have been hurting the company’s sales amid cut-throat competition.
We expect revenues from automotive sales to decline more than 6% in the to-be-reported quarter. Gross margins from automotive sales are expected at 15%, down 3 percentage points from the year-ago period.
While the automotive segment is likely to be under pressure, Tesla is set to benefit from increasing energy generation and storage revenues, thanks to the positive reception of Megapack and Powerwall products. In the second quarter of 2025, Tesla deployed 9.6 GWh of energy storage, reflecting an increase from 9.4 GWh in the corresponding quarter of 2024. We expect revenues from the Energy Generation/Storage segment to be $3.03 billion, suggesting an uptick on both a sequential and a year-over-year basis. Our estimate for Services/Other unit is pegged at $3.15 billion, implying growth of 20% year over year.
Tesla’s massive operating expenses and capital expenditures are likely to weigh on profits and limit cash flows. The company continues to invest heavily to expand gigafactory output, ramp up 4680 battery cell production, and enhance its Supercharger network. Spending is also elevated on AI-related technologies and upcoming product launches. Tesla expects capex in 2025 to remain at 2024’s elevated levels, alongside a rise in operating expenses.

Tesla Q2 Earnings Preview: Will the EV Giant Disappoint Again?

Ford Motor Company F has announced its 89th recall this year due to issues in its low-pressure fuel pump. According to the report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, affected models are prone to a lack of fuel delivery and subsequent engine stall as a result of low-pressure fuel pump failure.
The recall will affect 850,318 Ford and Lincoln models made between 2021 and 2023. These include the 2021-2023 Bronco, Explorer, F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550, as well as the 2021-2022 Mustang and the 2022 Expedition. Ford’s luxury models, the 2021-2023 Lincoln Aviator and the 2021-2022 Lincoln Navigator, may also be part of the recall.
Although the company anticipates only 10% of its recalled models to have faulty pumps, all models have to be recalled to identify the ones with the issue. As for the owners of the affected model, the company will be notifying them about the defects and later, when solutions arrive. Meanwhile, the company has warned owners of signs that might be visible prior to a possible pump failure. Signs can include a check engine light or a decrease in engine power. Failures are more likely to occur at high temperatures or if there is low fuel in the tank.
Including the 89th recall, Ford estimates that over 5 million vehicles were affected by recalls in 2025. This is the second-largest recall this year, following the recall of potentially 1.1 million vehicles across 17 models due to rearview camera malfunctions.
Shares of Ford have slumped 8.5% over the past year compared with the industry’s 7.1% decline.
