US stocks rallied sharply on Monday after US and Chinese negotiators, who met over the weekend in Malaysia, said they reached a tentative trade agreement to be finalized at Thursday's summit between Presidents Trump and Xi on the sidelines of the ASEAN conference in Malaysia. Treasury Secretary Bessent said the agreement means the US threat of a 100% tariff on US imports from China, set to start November 1, is "effectively off the table." Meanwhile, China agreed not to restrict the export of rare earth metals for at least one year and to buy a "substantial" amount of US soybeans. The two sides also made progress on shipping fees and US demands that China crack down on the export to the US of fentanyl and precursors. The two sides may also reach an agreement that would allow US consumers to continue to access TikTok.

Treasury Secretary Bessent said Monday that the pool of candidates for the next Fed Chair has been narrowed to Christopher Waller, Kevin Warsh, Kevin Hassett, Michelle Bowman, and Rick Rieder. President Trump is expected to announce a decision on a new Fed Chair by year-end to replace current Fed Chair Powell, whose term as the Fed Chairman ends on May 15, 2026. Mr. Powell's separate term as a Fed Governor runs until January 2028, though he faces pressure from Mr. Trump to step down as a Fed Governor as well, so Mr. Trump can appoint a more dovish Fed governor.
This is a busy week, with the FOMC meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday, when it is expected to cut its federal funds rate target by -25 bp. Also, five of the Magnificent Seven companies report earnings this week, with Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft reporting on Wednesday, and Apple and Amazon.com reporting on Thursday.
There was some carry-over support from last Friday's Sep US CPI report of +3.0% y/y for both the nominal and core figures, which was slightly weaker than expectations of +3.1% y/y for both figures.
Trade relations with Canada were a negative factor for stocks on Monday after President Trump said on Saturday that he would impose a new 10% tariff on US imports from Canada as punishment for last week's anti-tariff advertisement released by the provincial government of Ontario. Mr. Trump initially said that he was only halting US trade negotiations with Canada due to the ad, but he escalated the punishment over the weekend by imposing a new 10% tariff, even though Ontario had agreed to pause the ad campaign.
Ontario's ad featured former US President Reagan speaking out in a 1987 address in favor of free trade and against tariffs, calling tariffs an outdated idea that stifles innovation, drives up prices, and hurts US workers. Mr. Trump claimed the ad was deceptive and said it was designed to influence the US Supreme Court ahead of oral arguments on November 5 on the legality of Mr. Trump's reciprocal tariffs. Lower courts have already deemed Mr. Trump's reciprocal tariffs illegal, ruling the tariffs are based on a specious claim of emergency authority. If the US Supreme Court upholds those rulings, the US government will have to refund the tariffs already collected, and Mr. Trump's power to impose tariffs will be limited to well-founded sections of US trade law.
The US government shutdown continues into its fifth week, weighing on market sentiment and the US economy. The government shutdown is delaying the release of government reports, including all the recent weekly unemployment claims reports, the September unemployment and payroll report, Aug trade balance, Sep retail sales, Sep PPI, Sep housing starts, Sep industrial production, Sep leading indicators, and others. Bloomberg Economics estimates that 640,000 federal workers will be furloughed during the shutdown, which would expand jobless claims and push the unemployment rate up to 4.7%.
The markets are focused on earnings results as the Q3 earnings season continues. According to Bloomberg Intelligence, 84% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported so far have beaten forecasts, on course for the best quarter since 2021. However, Q3 profits are expected to have risen by +7.2% y/y, the smallest increase in two years. Also, Q3 sales growth is projected to slow to +5.9% y/y from +6.4% in Q2.
Overseas stock markets on Monday closed higher. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed up +0.64%. China's Shanghai Composite closed up +1.18%. Japan's Nikkei Stock 225 closed up +2.46%.
Interest Rates
December 10-year T-notes (ZNZ5) on Monday rose slightly by +0.5 tick. The 10-year T-note yield fell -1.2 bp to 3.989%. T-note prices initially fell on Monday due to the US-Chinese trade agreement, which reduced safe-haven demand for Treasury securities and was positive for the US and Chinese economies. T-note prices were also pressured by the rally in US stocks.
However, T-note prices recovered later in the day as the 10-year inflation expectations rate fell by -1.1 bp to 2.288%. T-notes have support from the ongoing US government shutdown, which could lead to additional job losses, reduced consumer spending, and a weakened US economy, potentially allowing the Fed to continue cutting interest rates.
The markets are discounting a 98% chance of a -25 bp rate cut at this week's FOMC meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct 28-29).
European government bond yields closed lower. The 10-year German bund yield fell -1.0 bp to 2.616%. The 10-year UK gilt yield fell 3.0 bp at 4.402%.
Swaps are discounting a 1% chance for a -25 bp rate cut by the ECB at its next policy meeting on October 30.
US Stock Movers
The Magnificent Seven stocks all closed higher on Monday, led by a +4.3% gain in Tesla (TSLA), a +3.6% gain in Alphabet (GOOG), and gains of more than +2% in Nvidia (NVDA) and Apple (AAPL).
Chip stocks traded higher across the board Monday, led by a +11% gain in Qualcomm (QCOM) on news of a new AI chip and computer line to compete with Nvidia. Marvell Technology (MRVL) rose more than +5%, and Arm Holdings (ARM) rose more than +4%. ON Semiconductors (ON), Lam Research (LRCX), and Intel (INTC) all rose by more than +3%.
Crypto stocks traded higher, with support from Monday's gains of more than +3% in Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) and +5% in Ethereum (^ETHUSD). Riot Platforms (RIOT) rallied more than +7%, Strategy (MSTR) rallied +2.3%, and Coinbase (COIN) rallied +2.0%.
Avidity Biosciences (RNA) rallied +42% after news that Swiss-based Novartis plans to buy the company in a deal worth $12 billion. Novartis ADR shares (NVS) fell -0.9%.
Ohio-based Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) agreed to buy Cadence Bank (CADE) for $7.4 billion in an all-stock deal to expand into the Southeast and South. Huntington fell -1.8%, while Cadence rallied +4.4%.
American Water Works (AWK) fell -2.5%, and Essential Utilities (WTRG) fell -1.4%, after news that the two companies finalized AWK's purchase of Essential Utilities for $12 billion in an all-stock deal.
Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) rallied more than +7% after raising its full-year net sales guidance.
Lululemon Athletica (LULU) rallied about +2% on news of an agreement with the National Football League and sports merchandiser Fanatics Inc to develop a line of fan apparel.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) rose more than +4% after CICC gave the brokerage a new rating of outperform.
Newmont (NEM) fell more than -5% as the company seeks to gain control of Barrick's gold mines in Nevada.
Boeing (BA) rose +0.8% even though factory workers in St Louis narrowly rejected a new 5-year contract that would have ended a 3-month strike that has disrupted the company's main military manufacturing operations.

Shares of Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) popped on Monday after the tech giant said it was entering the booming artificial intelligence (AI) chip market.
As of 3:15 p.m., Qualcomm's stock price was up more than 12%, after rising as much as 22% earlier in the day.

Qualcomm's new AI chips
The semiconductor maker debuted its AI200 and AI250 chips, designed to accelerate AI workloads while reducing costs. Qualcomm's chips are optimized for inference, which is when a trained AI model is used to make predictions from new data. In turn, they are geared toward making generative AI applications more affordable for more businesses.
"These innovative new AI infrastructure solutions empower customers to deploy generative AI at unprecedented TCO [total cost of ownership], while maintaining the flexibility and security modern data centers demand," Qualcomm executive Durga Malladi said in a press release.
Qualcomm's chips use its Hexagon neural processing unit (NPU) technology, which improves the efficiency of computing tasks and reduces power consumption.
The AI200 is due out in 2026. The AI250, which promises improvements in memory bandwidth of up to 10 times current-generation AI accelerators, is expected to launch in 2027.
Qualcomm is entering a massive market
Cloud platform providers are planning to spend over $500 billion to upgrade their AI infrastructure in 2026 alone, according to TrendForce. Much of these investments will be allocated to AI chips, such as those designed by Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices.
Qualcomm wants in on this AI action. The chipmaker is thus making moves to expand beyond its core mobile device market and penetrate the rapidly expanding data center industry.
These moves will put Qualcomm in more direct competition with Nvidia and AMD -- two fierce rivals that are not to be taken lightly.

InterDigital, Inc. IDCC is set to release third-quarter 2025 results on Oct. 30, before the opening bell. In the last reported quarter, adjusted earnings were $6.52 per share.
The Wilmington-based advanced mobile technologies provider is expected to witness revenue expansion year over year, backed by solid demand in the smartphone market. The company currently has 85% of the entire global smartphone market under its license.
Factors at Play
InterDigital is focused on pursuing agreements with unlicensed customers in the handset and consumer electronics markets. Crypto stocks are trading higher today, with support from today's gains of more than +3% in Bitcoin (^BTCUSD) and +5% in Ethereum (^ETHUSD). Riot Platforms (RIOT) is up more than +4% and Coinbase (COIN) is up more than +2%.
Avidity Biosciences (RNA) is up +42% after news that Swiss-based Novartis plans to buy the company in a deal worth $12 billion. Novartis ADR shares (NVS) are down -1%.
Ohio-based Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) agreed to buy Cadence Bank (CADE) for $7.4 billion in an all-stock deal to expand into the Southeast and South. Huntington is down more than -2% while Cadence is up more than +4%.
American Water Works (AWK) is down -3% and Essential Utilities (WTRG) is down -0.9% after news that the two companies have finalized AWK's purchase of Essential Utilities for $12 billion in an all-stock deal.
Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) is up more than +7% after raising its full-year net sales guidance.
Lululemon Athletica (LULU) is up more than +3% on news of an agreement with the National Football League and sports merchandiser Fanatics Inc to develop a line of fan apparel.
Robinhood Markets (HOOD) is up more than 4% after CICC gave the brokerage a new rating of outperform.
Newmont (NEM) is down more than -6% as the company seeks to gain control of Barrick's gold mines in Nevada.
Boeing (BA) is trading slightly higher even though factory workers in St Louis narrowly rejected a new 5-year contract that would have ended a 3-month strike that has disrupted the company's main military manufacturing operations.

Can Higher Revenues Benefit Monolithic Power's Q3 Earnings?

Motorola Solutions, Inc. MSI is scheduled to report third-quarter 2025 results on Oct. 30, after the closing bell. In the last reported quarter, the company delivered an earnings surprise of 6.2%. It pulled off a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of 6.8%, on average.
The Chicago, IL-based company is expected to have recorded year-over-year higher revenues on the back of growth in both segments — Products and Systems Integration and Services and Software. It benefits from the increasing demand for its mission-critical technologies in North America and globally.
Factors at Play
During the to-be-reported quarter, Motorola announced that its AI-powered video security and access control solutions were deployed in the University of Palermo. Designed to proactively detect potential threats, automatically alert security personnel and lock down physical access to classrooms and campus facilities, the solutions help to protect countless students, teachers and staff throughout the college’s campus. This is likely to have generated incremental revenues during the quarter.
In the quarter, Motorola launched Inform – an AI-assisted incident response solution across on-premise, cloud-based and other third-party security deployments. It helps security teams identify and respond to complex threats by intelligently grouping multiple, seemingly disparate events into a single, actionable incident, as security enterprises are placing strong emphasis on strengthening their overall security ecosystems. This is driving demand for advanced communication devices from Motorola, likely translating into higher revenues for the quarter.
During the quarter, Motorola announced that the São Paulo Subway has implemented its P25 land mobile radio (LMR) communication system to provide reliable coverage for a faster response to incidents, better operational coordination and increased safety for riders and staff. The company launched the WAVE PTX communication solution in the Dominican Republic and Peru. This broadband push-to-talk (PTT) subscription service allows business enterprises to instantly connect with different work teams for seamless operations. These are likely to be reflected in the upcoming quarterly results.
During the third quarter, Motorola collaborated with Nokia to develop a next-generation, containerized, tactical communications network solution for U.K. defense agencies. The modular system leverages the Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) infrastructure of Motorola and Nokia's 5G AirScale portfolio for reliable and secure voice and data communications on the front lines. The TETRA LMR network was also deployed across Poland to support critical communications and grid resiliency for homes, businesses, schools and hospitals.
Riding on such state-of-the-art products, Motorola expects to record strong demand across video security and services, LMR products and related software while benefiting from a solid foundation. These systems drive the demand for additional device sales and promote software upgrades and infrastructure expansion. The comprehensive suite of services ensures continuity and reduces risks related to critical communications operations. These developments are expected to have positively impacted its performance in the second quarter.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the Products and Systems Integration segment’s revenues is pegged at $1.85 billion. The figure indicates a rise from $1.78 billion recorded in the year-ago quarter. Our estimate for revenues from this segment is $1.85 billion, implying 3.7% year-over-year growth. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the Services and Software segment’s revenues is pegged at $1.15 billion, up from $1.01 billion recorded in the year-earlier quarter. For investors, artificial intelligence (AI) is the gift that keeps giving. Despite worries about the economy -- high interest rates, a sluggish job market, tariffs, high prices, and a government shutdown -- the stock market keeps rolling along, powered by AI stocks that have no intention of slowing down.

AI infrastructure spending is expected to hit $490 billion next year, and to jump as high as $2.9 trillion through 2029. With that level of spending, it's no wonder why investors are continuing to pile into AI stocks.
But who is going to be the biggest winner in all this spending, as tech companies are scrambling to get a piece of the pie? In my view, it's the two companies with the biggest competitive moats -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE: TSM) and ASML (NASDAQ: ASML).
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing
There's a rush to make high-performing semiconductor chips. Among other uses, semiconductors power data centers that companies are using to manage AI-powered programs and large language models, plus developing new features. Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, Amazon, Apple, Qualcomm, Alphabet, and others are making these chips -- but they're all turning to Taiwan Semiconductor, or TSMC, to fabricate them.
"They are a world-class foundry and support customers of diverse needs. You can't overstate the magic that is TSMC," Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang gushed last month.
TSMC owns roughly 70% of the semiconductor foundry market, according to Statista. The company is in demand because it's one of the few that can make 3 nanometer (nm) chips, and it's working on mass producing 2nm chips this year. The smaller the transistor sizes, the more transistors TSMC can squeeze into a chip, making them exponentially more powerful. TSMC gets about 60% of its revenue from 3nm and 5nm chips.
Nvidia is the unquestioned leader in designing high-powered graphics processing units (GPUs) that are essential to top AI functions, but it will be under pressure in coming quarters as other top companies ramp up their own chipmaking efforts.
No matter who comes out on top in that fight, however, TSMC will be the fabricator of choice. That's why it's poised to be a big winner from the AI infrastructure boom.
ASML
Based in the Netherlands, ASML is the only company in the world making extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, which are used to make small, advanced circuits on semiconductor chips. They work better than deep ultraviolet (DUV) machines because they reflect light using mirrors, rather than refracting it with lenses. That allows ASML's EUV machines to print smaller and finer -- and gives chipmakers the ability to make more powerful chips.
The company has a massive growth window in front of it. Revenues for 2024 were 28.3 billion euros ($32.85 billion), with gross margins of 51.3%, and management says it expects to have annual revenue between 44 billion euros and 60 billion euros ($51.08 billion to $69.65 billion) by 2030 and gross margins between 56% and 60%. If it achieves those numbers, ASML will have a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.2% at the top end.
For the third quarter of fiscal 2025, ASML posted revenue of 7.5 billion euros ($8.71 billion). And despite the expected dramatic drop in China net sales in 2026 because of export restrictions imposed by the Dutch government, the company expects to see positive global sales growth next year.
The bottom line
TSMC and ASML stocks are seemingly moving in tandem these days -- both are up 47% on the year, and both have a strong growth story.
AI companies are going to battle for the next several years to gain supremacy and market share as they seek to capitalize on the massive opportunity in artificial intelligence. But no matter which of these companies come out on top, they'll be turning TSMC to build the chips. And TSMC will need ASML's groundbreaking equipment to make that happen.
Both companies are perfectly situated to profit from the explosion in AI infrastructure spending, and that's why I see them as the true winners in the years to come.

Beyond Chips: AI Infrastructure Spending Is Projected to Hit $490 Billion -- Who Benefits Most?

Corning Incorporated GLW is set to report its third-quarter 2025 results on Oct. 28, before the opening bell. It delivered a trailing four-quarter earnings surprise of 4.73%, on average. In the last reported quarter, the company reported an earnings surprise of 5.26%.
The advanced glass substrates producer is likely to have witnessed revenue growth year over year, owing to healthy demand in the Optical Communications and Specialty Materials segments. Healthy demand in the solar market is a tailwind.
Factors at Play for GLW’s Q2 Earnings
During the quarter, Apple announced that it has committed $2.5 billion investment to develop all of iPhone and Apple Watch’s cover glass in Corning’s Kentucky manufacturing facilities. The initiative aligned with Apple’s $600 billion multiyear investment commitment in the United States. In this program, Corning has emerged as a major player. GLW is developing the most advanced glass production line in its Kentucky facility to match Apple’s requirements. This will likely drive net sales growth in Corning’s Specialty Materials segment.
In the quarter under review, Corning has joined forces with GlobalFoundries to create a detachable fiber connector solution for GF’s silicon photonics platform. During this venture, GlobalFoundries will leverage Corning’s GlassBridge solution, a glass-waveguide-based edge-coupler to match the high bandwidth requirements of AI data centers.
Major telecom player, Lumen, accelerated its network expansion effort to match surging AI demand. It is sourcing next-generation fiber optic cable from Corning, driving growth in the Optical Communications segment.
In the to be reported quarter, Corning formed a strategic collaboration with T1 Energy to strengthen the U.S. solar supply chain by delivering domestically sourced solar components. Such development is expected to have a favorable impact on the third-quarter earnings.
Our revenue estimate for the Optical Communication segment is pegged at $1.61 billion, indicating healthy growth from $1.24 billion in the year-ago quarter. Our revenue estimate for the Display Technologies segment is pegged at $766.2 million, indicating 8.4% year-over-year growth. GLW Set to Report Q3 Results: Will Top Line Growth Boost Earnings?

Most tech investors credit artificial intelligence (AI) with ending the 2022 bear market and sparking a boom in stock prices. Those gains created a new crop of transformational stocks, with companies like Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and Palantir leading the pack.
Now, the staggering gains in some of these stocks have led investors to speculate whether AI stocks are in a bubble. Knowing this, have investors missed this boom, or can they still find opportunity by investing in AI?

Here's what investors should know and watch.
Understanding bubbles
In this context, investors must first understand stock market bubbles. They occur when stock prices increase considerably faster than the value those stocks represent.
Admittedly, one can find individual AI stocks that arguably sell for "bubble level" valuations. An example is Palantir, whose forward P/E ratio recently exceeded 275. Over time, its profits would likely have to increase considerably to justify such a forward earnings multiple.
Moreover, bubbles can be dangerous, even for long-term investors. One can look at Micron, whose stock did not return to its dot-com bubble high until 2022. Also, the price of silver just now achieved a new all-time high, something silver bulls have waited for since 1980.
Since few investors can afford to wait out such recoveries, it is critical for them to differentiate between bubbles and the overvaluations common with tech growth stocks.
Assessing AI valuations
Once investors better understand bubbles, they need to take stock of the industry's growth. According to Grand View Research, the AI industry is expected to grow from around $279 billion in 2024 to approximately $3.5 trillion by 2033. That amounts to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 32% over the next eight years.
That indicates two things. For one, the "bubbles" in AI are less likely to pop anytime soon amid the industry tailwinds. Additionally, even beginning investors will probably have time to profit from an AI-driven bull market. Fortunately, the individual stocks show wide variances in terms of valuations.
For example, despite 1,500% gains over the last three years, market leader Nvidia has a P/E ratio of 52. While that is above the S&P 500's average of 31, it hardly represents bubble territory. It is also cheaper than rival AMD with a 139 P/E ratio. Still, when considering AMD's forward P/E of 62, its possible overvaluation does not compare to the higher valuations of stocks like Palantir.
Even among the "Magnificent Seven," stocks like Google parent Alphabet and social media giant Meta Platforms have P/E ratios below 30. Also, Qualcomm is arguably the value stock in the AI space. At a P/E of 16, it is likely investors are more concerned about muted upgrade cycles and China exposure than they are about the AI-enabled chips the company continues to release.
Instead, some of the higher valuations that could be in bubble territory seem to involve smaller stocks. Stocks like SoundHound AI, a mid-cap stock specializing in voice-enabled AI, do not even earn profits. Knowing that, its price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 58 might concern investors given the S&P 500's average P/S ratio of 3.4.
More extreme valuations appear among quantum computing stocks. IonQ sells at a P/S ratio of 272, while Rigetti Computing's sales multiple is nearly 1,500. This could indicate that the quantum computing subsector is in a bubble, but neither of those represent AI stocks as a whole.
Is the AI boom becoming a bubble?
After evaluating individual stocks, investors should not think of AI stocks in general as a bubble.
Admittedly, one can find likely bubbles in the sector, and stocks like Palantir and some smaller stocks that specialize in quantum computing may fit that description.
Still, most stocks, including Nvidia, are likely not in bubble territory. When also seeing the low valuation of Qualcomm, investors should understand that they can find AI stocks trading at a wide variety of valuations.
That bodes well for an industry growing at an estimated 32% CAGR. With the AI growth likely to continue for years, investors should not shy away from the sector over "bubble" fears.
